However, he had an inconsistent season due to a lengthy suspension and inconsistent playing time under Cleveland’s former head coach, JB Bickerstaff.</p><p>Bickerstaff was relieved of his duties following the Cavs’ 4-1 loss to the Celtics in the Eastern Conference semifinal round of the NBA playoffs. The Cavs also inked free agent power forward/centers Emoni Bates and JT Thor.</p><p>Thompson averaged 3.3 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 11.2 minutes per game throughout the regular season. However, his numbers in January, where he averaged 4.9 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 16.1 minutes in nine games, slightly dipped in his return from a suspension.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cavs-news-tristan-thompson-suspended-25-games-violating-anti-drug-program">Thompson was suspended for 25 games</a> after testing positive for two banned substances. Sources confirm that veteran big man Tristan Thompson and the Cavs have agreed on a one-year contract. A former first-round pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, Thompson will likely start and finish his career with the Cavs. However, it won’t be with the expectation of heavy minutes. Thompson played the role of Cleveland’s emergency big last season and will do the same this year behind Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley. More than anything, Thompson will provide valuable locker room support and can act as a bridge between the players and new head coach Kenny Atkinson and his staff.</p><p>But with the Cavs making this signing, their roster has 13 active players and three two-way players. While there still isn’t an end to the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/how-isaac-okoro-could-decide-cavs-free-agency">ongoing negotiations between Cleveland and Isaac Okoro</a>, if or when Okoro returns to the Cavs, their roster will have 14 active players. Cleveland is typically a team that doesn’t enter the regular season with 15 players on its roster. So what does that mean for what the Cavs do roster-wise before the start of training camp?</p><p>That means the Cavs are locked into this roster once Okoro’s decision is made. It also means that Cleveland is more or less running back the same team from last year, with the hope that a new coaching direction and internal growth put them over the edge. But could the Cavs buck their usual trend with a few attractive free agency options and some money available to spend? Well, it all depends on a few things, the most important being money and playing time.</p><h2><b>Who else could the Cavs sign this offseason?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Tristan-Thompson-Cavs-Bulls.jpg"><figcaption>Thomas Shea-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>If Okoro returns to Cleveland on his $11.8 million qualifying offer, the Cavs have roughly $5 million to sign a free agent. With the Cavs still needing another wing player who can play either forward spot, would a $5 million-ish one-year deal be enough to bring in someone like Marcus Morris Sr., Jae Crowder, or Robert Covington? Well, that’s where the issue of playing time comes into focus and could jeopardize any chance of signing an impact player.</p><p>Entering this season, these Cleveland players would eat up minutes where a proverbial player of need could fit:</p><ul><li>Evan Mobley</li><li>Georges Niang</li><li>Dean Wade</li><li>Isaac Okoro</li></ul><p>Outside of Mobley, it isn’t the most fearsome foursome, meaning playing time could be available. However, all four players have earned their stripes with the Cavs. Unless Cleveland somehow signs a player on the same level as Mobley, it would be an open competition for forward minutes. It might be a level playing field since everyone will learn Atkinson’s offense. But with these four players returning from last year, they have something a possible impactful free agent doesn’t: On-court chemistry.</p><p>With that in mind, rocking the boat might not make pursuing any high-end free agents worthwhile. Instead, if the Cavs make any other free agency moves, they could target a player in a similar vein to Thompson. Most nights, the fifteenth man wouldn’t play. However, they’d at least be ready if their number is called, regardless of whether it’s because of injuries or blowouts. It’s not a perfect scenario for a player. But, if the understanding of the role is clear, and the player knows they have to remain ready, some targets make sense.</p><h2><b>How the Cavs can fill their final roster spot</b></h2><p>Cleveland could target Lamar Stevens, Thaddeus Young, or possibly, sources say, Isaiah Mobley to fill the final roster spot. It could also be a player the Cavs invite to training camp, creating an open competition. It’ll be worth watching now that the Cavs have less than a month until the start of training camp. He now has custody of his younger brother Amari, who is 17 years old and has epilepsy and must have care at all times to help him with his condition.</p><p>“Amari is a minor and has medical conditions that render him unable to take care of himself or seek gainful employment,” Tristan said in the documents per People, adding, “Appointing a guardian for Amari would be in his best interest because it would ensure that someone would be responsible for providing and fulfilling his basic needs,” Thompson said, per the docs.</p><p>Back in September, Tristan was awarded temporary custody of his brother. He filed for guardianship back in September after the death of their mother, Andrea Thompson, in January 2023. Their mother died from a heart attack in her Canadian home. Amari was living with her at the time. </p><p>Back in September, Tristan was awarded with temporary custody of his brother. It allowed the athlete to have “all the powers a parent having legal custody of a child would have, such as managing Amari’s finances, traveling with him both in the U.S. and internationally, applying for American citizenship, deciding living arrangements and obtaining legal counsel.” </p><p>Their father, Trevor Thompson, reportedly has been absent from Amari’s life since 2014. </p><p>“I have not had any contact with him since his separation from our late mother in 2014, and contact was minimal prior to that date,” Tristan said of his father in <a href="https://www.etonline.com/tristan-thompson-asks-to-be-sole-conservator-of-17-year-old-brother-says-he-cannot-locate-their" rel="noopener">legal documents</a> obtained by Entertainment Tonight. “My only contact with Trevor Thompson in the past nine years was a brief interaction when he appeared at my mother’s funeral. The NBA star’s brother is confined to a wheelchair due to Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a severe form of epilepsy. Their mother Andrea Brooks died last January and she was the sole legal guardianship of Amari since 2014. According to Entertainment Tonight, their father <a href="https://www.etonline.com/tristan-thompson-asks-to-be-sole-conservator-of-17-year-old-brother-says-he-cannot-locate-their" rel="noopener">can not be located</a>. </p><p>“I have not had any contact with him since his separation from our late mother in 2014, and contact was minimal prior to that date,” Tristan said of his father in legal documents obtained by the publication. “My only contact with Trevor Thompson in the past nine years was a brief interaction when he appeared at my mother’s funeral. I have no knowledge of his current or recent whereabouts.”</p><p>The athlete said he seemed legal counsel to track down his father “but they were unable to obtain any information about Trevor’s current location or other relevant details.”</p><p>Tristan’s father has been away from the family since the 2014 separation between him and his late mother. Andrea died at age 53 of a heart attack. She lived in Toronto. </p><p>“Since then, Trevor Douglas Thompson has effectively abandoned the proposed ward; he failed to pay any child support despite the court order and has not been in contact with the proposed ward or Andrea Marie Brooks since July 2014,” the court documents state per the outlet. “He has done nothing to support or raise the proposed ward since then and has relinquished all rights to have any say in the proposed ward’s care.”</p><p>Back in September, Tristan was awarded with temporary custody of his brother. It allowed the athlete to have “all the powers a parent having legal custody of a child would have, such as managing Amari’s finances, traveling with him both in the U.S. and internationally, applying for American citizenship, deciding living arrangements and obtaining legal counsel.” </p><p>After the death of his mother, Tristan and Amari stayed with ex Khloé Kardashian as his home was being fixed. </p><p>Tristan thanked her family for helping him during the difficult time.</p><p>“Thank you so much — especially for me and my family — I don’t know what I would do without you guys,” he told Khloé, Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner. “You guys are so busy and have so much going on, I just hope I can continue blessing you guys with everything my mom would want for you.”</p><p>Khloé and Tristan share two children together: daughter True and son Tatum. The basketball gods saw the Cavs like George Constanza and decided then and there that Cleveland and their fans could not be too happy. The day after the Cavs dominant road win over the Orlando Magic, the NBA announced that veteran big man <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cavs-news-tristan-thompson-suspended-25-games-violating-anti-drug-program" rel="noopener">Tristan Thompson would be suspended</a> for 25 games without pay due to violating terms of the NBA and NBPA Anti-Drug Program by testing positive for ibutamoren and SARM LGD-4033. Thompson will be suspended for 25 games, starting when the Cavs face the Milwaukee Bucks on the road.</p><p>Thompson, 32, has <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/t/thomptr01.html">appeared in 36 games</a> off the bench for Cleveland this season, becoming the team’s backup center while the team navigates a rough stretch of injuries, including the absence of fellow big man Evan Mobley, who continues to recover from knee surgery.</p><p>Entering this year as the third-string center after signing a veteran minimum-salary deal to return to Cleveland, the city where his NBA career started, Thompson quickly displaced Damian Jones in the regular rotation and has provided quality minutes, earning praise from coaches and teammates for his impact on and off the court. Thompson is averaging 3.8 points and 3.9 rebounds in 12.4 minutes. He chipped in four points and five boards in the Cavs’ 126-99 win over the Magic on Monday night.</p><p>“He just impacts winning,” Cavs coach J.B. Bickerstaff said recently. “Guys like that, no matter what circumstance you put him in, they’re going to have an impact.”</p><p>The length of the suspension means Thompson will be unavailable until Cleveland faces the Houston Rockets on the road in mid-March. Thompson can still be around the team and participate in practice by rule. But he isn’t allowed in the arena starting two hours before tipoff on game nights. Losing that veteran presence can be a blow for a young team like Cleveland, especially when everyone in their locker room gravitates towards Thompson and his larger-than-life personality.</p><p>With Thompson out, the Cavs will have to turn back to Damian Jones, the player Thompson replaced, to soak up reserve big man minutes. That could be a precarious situation for Cleveland, considering Jones looked lost whenever out on the court for the Cavs. It could be an even greater challenge for Cleveland not having Thompson, considering that Giannis Antetkounmpo, Brook Lopez, and the super-sized Bucks are waiting for the Cavs.</p><p>It’ll be challenging for Jones and Jarrett Allen to defend Milwaukee’s size, athleticism, and strength. Look for Georges Niang, Dean Wade, Pete Nance, and even Isaiah Mobley to step up as well as Cleveland tries to navigate their foray with the Bucks, waiting for Evan Mobley to be 100% again.</p><p>On paper, the Cavs should survive without Thompson until Mobley returns to the court since they have enough bodies available, and Allen’s greatest strength is defending the rim without fouling. But, with no clear return date set for Mobley yet, everything will be a bit tighter for a Cleveland team that has been struggling with depth and injuries all season long. It’s another test of strength and adversity, and hopefully, the Cavs will pass with flying colors.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
