As <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/miami-heat/nba-rumors-shams-confirms-heats-jonathan-kuminga-interest-amid-warriors-uncertainty">rumors surrounded the Heat</a> heading into the NBA Draft, the team would keep the pick and select Jakucionis, who was widely considered a lottery pick.</p><p>Jakucionis played one season for the Fighting Illini under head coach Brad Underwood and is filled with major potential at the professional level with his playmaking savvy and work in the pick-and-roll game. In fact, he would say that aspect is key and is <a href="https://x.com/ZachWeinberger/status/1938077841838457324" rel="noopener">“grateful”</a> that he will be able to play alongside the featured Miami duo of Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro.</p><p>“The playmaking ability is what I do,” Jakucionis said. “I’m just grateful to play with guys like [Bam] Adebayo. We can play together in pick-and-rolls. And Tyler Herro and all those kinds of players. I’m just very happy and grateful to be in this place.”</p><p>In speaking with the media on a call right after being selected, there could be some surprise that Jakucionis fell to the 20th pick. Either way, Jakucionis would call it a <a href="https://x.com/ZachWeinberger/status/1938078039281439125" rel="noopener">“special”</a> moment, calling it the start of a new chapter in the life of the 19-year-old.</p><p>“I’m so excited,” Jakucionis said. “I’m just grateful for this moment to be in this place with this opportunity to get my name called. He would even say to ClutchPoints <a href="https://x.com/ZachWeinberger/status/1938077840530149654" rel="noopener">that his playmaking</a> is his biggest strength, which was a need heading into the draft for Miami.</p><p>“Yeah, I think the playmaking, trying to make everybody better on the court,” Jakucionis said. “Try to find open players, shoot when I’m open, and give a lot of effort every day.”</p><p>Last season, Jakucionis averaged 15 points, 5,7 rebounds, and 4,7 assists per game while shooting 44 percent from the field and 31.8 percent from beyond the arc.</p><p>There is no denying that there are some aspects that Jakucionis will need to improve on, like his defensive ability and consistency from three-point range, but the Heat have been <a href="https://x.com/ZachWeinberger/status/1938077517228753083" rel="noopener">known for their development program</a> in uplifting young players. This would be something that Jakucionis pointed out to ClutchPoints on Wednesday night.</p><p>“I know the development part is really good there,” Jakucionis said. “I think I can improve a lot there, I just need to trust in the process, trust to make the team better, trust to win as much as we can, and I’m ready to work.”</p><p>At any rate, Miami looks to improve after finishing last season with a 37-45 record, which put them 10th in the East, as though they would make it through the play-in tournament, the playoffs were one to forget. He graduated from NYU in 2012 and still returns to serve as PA announcer and occasional broadcaster for the school’s basketball and volleyball teams.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NCAA Basketball</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Ohio State picked up a 2025 commitment on Monday and the name might be ring a bell for basketball fans.</p><p>Myles Herro, the younger <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/miami-heat/heat-news-tyler-herro-gets-pivotal-pat-riley-admission-on-potential-contract-extension">brother of Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro</a>, has <a href="https://www.on3.com/news/myles-herro-brother-of-nba-all-star-tyler-herro-commits-to-ohio-state/" rel="noopener">committed to the Buckeyes</a> out of Whitnall High School in Wisconsin, Myles told On3.</p><p>“I chose Ohio State because it felt like the right fit for me, both on and off the court,” he said. “The opportunity to grow in a program like this, compete at a high level, and be part of something special really stood out. Coach [Jake] Diebler and his staff were real with me from the start. The way they communicate, the vision they have for the program, and how much they believe in their players made it easy to trust them.”</p><p>The younger Herro comes to Columbus as a three-star point guard ranked 288th in his class, according to On3’s rankings. He gives the Buckeyes a two-man freshman class enrolling this summer with top-100 talent A’mare Bynum already in tow. Diebler also had a pledge from four-star guard Dorian Jones but he decided last week to take another year before enrolling in college.</p><p>That gave Herro an opportunity to come in, and he told On3 that Ohio State basketball fans can expect him to make a difference on both ends.</p><p>“I’d describe my game as a pass-first guard who can create when needed and score the ball too,” he said. “I take pride in being a two-way player, someone who can impact both ends of the floor and bring energy every time I step on the court.”</p><p>In addition to Bynum and Herro, Ohio State has three incoming transfers in Joshua Ojianwuna (Baylor), Brandon Noel (Wright State), and Christoph Tilly (Santa Clara).</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/ncaa-basketball/ohio-state-basketball-news-buckeyes-fans-call-jake-diebler-job-after-disastrous-loss-vs-iowa">Ohio State went 17-15</a> last year, Diebler’s first full season as head coach. With the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/miami-heat/heat-news-tyler-herros-excited-admission-regarding-possible-extension-this-offseason">Heat star eligible for contract extension in October</a>, team president Pat Riley spoke about the likelihood that it will get done then about his season overall.</p><p>Herro currently has two years left on his contract, making $31 million and $33 million, respectively, where in October, he’s eligible for a three-year deal worth $150 million. Speaking Friday at his end-of-season press conference, Riley would say to ClutchPoints that Herro is a <a href="https://x.com/ZachWeinberger/status/1920910369503019105" rel="noopener">“pivotal”</a> aspect to Miami and hopes he can “stay here the rest of his career.”</p><p>“I will steal one of Spo’s favorite Spo-isms, ignitable,” Riley said. “He’s one of the most ignitable guys offensively in the league, and we’re happy to have him. He’s 25 years old, he’s coming off an All-Star year, and he was voted in by the coaches. That means something, and so he’s pivotal for us as an offensive player. We just need more around him that can do a little bit of what he does, because now he’s getting beat up, he’s getting schemed, overly schemed, and so we’ll learn a lot about that. However, if they were to wait, Herro would be eligible for a four-year, $207 million extension through 2030-31.</p><p>After Butler’s departure, Herro was the sole focus for opposing defenses as he experienced immense pressure and face-guarding, something Riley said will be a challenge this season to overcome. He would also double down on building around Herro and team captain Bam Adebayo.</p><p>“But now, when you’re in a position of having two on the ball all the time, and you’re getting picked up full court, 94 feet,” Riley said to ClutchPoints “And I know for a fact that Tyler was telling Max [Strus], could you use some Listerine please, or something like that because he face-guarded them all over the court, and it’s a whole another world that he’s in now. And so people will sacrifice so much on defense just to wear him out.”</p><p>“So those are the things that coach is very good at and has to really, you know, identify and reconcile. And then Tyler simply has to learn how to be a great player, like Steph [Curry] is when he gets that treatment, and to be able to still score and those, there’s going to be nights when he’s going to have those four for 20 games. He’s just one of those guys. But I’m glad that we got him, got him, Bam at the right time and and we’ll move forward with that.”</p><h2><b>Pat Riley answers if the Heat can afford to give Tyler Herro an extension</b></h2><p>With <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/miami-heat/heat-news-pat-riley-drops-major-hint-on-offseason-plans">Riley promising changes to the Heat this offseason</a>, there could be concerns with the financials, as the team was once again playing in the tax. One would wonder if Miami could afford to give Herro a contract extension this October, plus adding another star, and staying under the tax.</p><p>Riley would be asked this Friday as emphasizing that Herro is<a href="https://x.com/ZachWeinberger/status/1920911309140267150" rel="noopener"> “deserving”</a> of an extension, the team hasn’t “committed” to it just yet, though both sides have talked about it.</p><p>“I think he answered that question perfectly last week; he’s okay,” Riley said. “And so we’ve already talked about it, and I’ve talked about it with Tyler. And so, we’ll see what happens as we plan. But definitely Tyler is deserving of that, of the thought of an extension. But are we going to do it? We haven’t committed to it, but we’re going to discuss it. And I’ve already talked to him about it.
