During the Suns’ media day, Jones explained what the message was when he met with the ownership group.</p><p>“That’s what they brought me here for, just to be me, play my game, be the leader that I am,” Jones said. “The guys allow me to do that. That’s huge for me of having and given that confidence to, you know, go out there and play my game and communicate whatever I see or feel out there.”</p><p>Jones has played with many NBA greats, past and present. He played with Kevin Garnett, Derrick Rose, and Jimmy Butler when they were on the Minnesota Timberwolves. When Jones signed with the Memphis Grizzlies, he backed up point guard Ja Morant. Fast forward to Phoenix, he is playing with Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal, three of the top stars in the NBA.</p><p>However, it wasn’t only the star power and the ownership group that influenced Jones to sign with the Suns. Grayson Allen was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/suns-news-tyus-jones-major-factor-join-suns">one of the major factors</a> when Jones signed with the Suns. There were questions about who would be in the starting lineup, between the two. Regardless of the lineup change, Allen remained optimistic about the team’s improvement.</p><p>“Me looking at Ty being a starter, I just feel like our team got a lot better,” Allen said. “I’m still the same, same player, a better player. I’m happy our team got a lot better, I’m happy Tyus is on our team, and I’m looking forward to how we look out there with having him. So I could be more excited to have him on our team and I’m ok with what comes with that.”</p><p>Meanwhile, Durant and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/how-devin-booker-called-his-shot-with-gold-medal">Booker called their shot for the gold medal</a> while they were in Paris representing USA Basketball. Throughout the preparation for each game, the duo was shocked to learn that the Suns had landed Jones. Even though the two all-stars have played with a plethora of key players, Jones stands out as one they can truly benefit from.<br><br>“Tyus was just another veteran presence that been around great players throughout his career,” Durant said. “He played in different roles where he was coming off the bench, had the feeling for guys that were injured, got traded to a Washington team where he had to assume a starting role. So he’s been in different situations and so a guy who’s seen a lot in this league is always good. Being around the last two weeks, seeing this game, being able to figure out what, and how I can help as well has been fun.”</p><p>Rewinding to Jones’s conversation with upper management, they were unsure if they could sign the point guard. After all, many contending teams were willing to spend extra money.</p><p>“I understand it’s going to be really tough for someone to take less money to come play for the organization,” Ishbia said. “He got a chance to talk to Coach Bud, and he talked to Kevin, Devin, and Brad. Tyus knew Grayson from college, all these guys know what we’re about here, and they were able to communicate that.”</p><h2><b>Will Mike Budenholzer and Grayson Allen make the Tyus Jones signing worth it for the Suns? </b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Tyus-Jones-made-an-impression-on-Mike-Budenholzer.jpg"><figcaption>© Rhona Wise-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Jones was one of the hottest names on the free agent market. Although he may not have the superstar aura, his impact cannot be understated. The former Duke Blue Devil had an assist-to-turnover ratio of 7.35 last season, the highest of any player in a season since individual turnovers were first tracked in 1977-78. Throughout that time, Jones has the three highest marks in a season with 7.04 in 2021-22 and 6.96 in 2018-19.</p><p>He also produced one of the best seasons of his career with the Washington Wizards. Jones averaged <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/j/jonesty01.html" rel="noopener">12 points, 7.3 assists, 1.1 steals, and only 1.3 turnovers</a> per game. For the first time, he started every single game and proved why he deserved to be in that spot. Jones had <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/j/jonesty01/gamelog/2024" rel="noopener">21 of his 66 games with zero turnovers</a>. </p><p>Playing with Durant and Booker seems like a dream come true for Jones. Two players who can score about as well as anybody. However, the Suns still have Beal, who is an exceptional scorer in his own right. Beal had been <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/suns-news-celtics-joe-mazzulla-bradley-beal">playing somewhat of a point guard role</a> throughout the previous season. </p><p>He only played in 53 games and <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/bealbr01.html" rel="noopener">averaged 18.2 points, 4.4 rebounds</a>, and five assists in 33.3 minutes per game. While Beal was extremely efficient, he was consistently injured and could never find a true rhythm. That, combined with the added pressure of being a playmaker made matters worse. As Beal found out about the signing, he shared his initial reaction to Jones joining the squad.<br><br>“All smiles… that’s it though,” Beal said. “It’s exciting though, man. I get to be a two guard, a combo guard, which is what I was for 12 years of my career. To continue to thrive in that role, I’m just super excited with the team we have. Tyus and Monte (Morris) help everybody, it doesn’t just help me. I’m excited I get to be Brad.”</p><p>The Suns will begin their preseason on October 6 against the Los Angeles Lakers. It seems like the 2023-24 NBA season just ended, yet here we are just over a month away from players reporting back to their teams for preseason practices and training camp in preparation for the 2024-25 season. Still, several key free agents remain available for NBA teams to negotiate with, even after Tyus Jones, Luke Kennard, and others recently came off the board.</p><p>Jones was one of the best free agents remaining after NBA Summer League in Las Vegas concluded. With the market quiet and virtually no teams having the ability to offer him a long-term deal, Jones opted to take a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/suns-news-tyus-jones-agrees-to-3-3-million-contract">one-year, minimum deal</a> to prove his worth with a contending team. The 28-year-old point guard is among the best in the league when it comes to assist-to-turnover ratio, and he will now aid Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal in their pursuit of a title with the Phoenix Suns.</p><p>Kennard was another big name to recently come off the board as a free agent late in the NBA offseason, as he ultimately returned to the Memphis Grizzlies. In June, the Grizzlies declined Kennard’s $14.8 million team option in hopes of finding common ground on a deal that would save them some money in luxury taxes. On Wednesday, the two sides came to an <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/grizzlies-news-luke-kennard-returns-11-million-contract">agreement on a $11 million contract</a> for the 2024-25 season. He will become an unrestricted free agent once again next summer.</p><p>While Jones and Kennard decided to sign new contracts, Gordon Hayward didn’t receive much interest this offseason. As a result, the 34-year-old veteran forward has decided to call it quits. On Thursday, Hayward announced on social media that he was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/gordon-hayward-makes-emotional-retirement-announcement-after-14-seasons">going to be retiring</a>, ending his 14-year NBA career. Hayward, a 2017 All-Star, never fully recovered after a devastating leg injury he suffered at the start of the 2017-18 season with the Boston Celtics, as his time with the Charlotte Hornets shortly after was also cut short due to injuries.</p><p>Entering the month of August, very few impactful talents remain available for teams to negotiate with ahead of training camp. However, players like Isaac Okoro and Markelle Fultz still remain on the open market, searching for new contracts before the 2024-25 season.</p><h2><b>Isaac Okoro – Restricted free agent</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Okoro-Celebrates-Three.jpg"><figcaption>Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>The Cleveland Cavaliers have spent a ton of money on their core group this offseason. Donovan Mitchell received a $150 million extension, Evan Mobley received a $224 million maximum rookie contract extension, and Jarrett Allen recently got a $91 million extension. With Darius Garland also under contract after signing a max deal last summer, the Cavs now have their focal points through the 2027-28 season. The only question mark remaining is Isaac Okoro, who remains a restricted free agent this summer.</p><p>Okoro has made a name for himself in Cleveland due to his 3-and-D capabilities while shooting a career-high 39.1 percent from the perimeter during the 2023-24 season. The Cavs have been <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/isaac-okoro-cavs-tenure-writing-on-the-wall">exploring all of their options</a> pertaining to bringing Okoro back, as well as possibly including him in a sign-and-trade to upgrade their talent on the wing. It is not hard to imagine that the Cavs will bring him back on a team-friendly contract at this stage, a deal that could set the Cavs up for a roster move ahead of the trade deadline.</p><h2><b>Markelle Fultz – Unrestricted free agent</b></h2><p>After signing both Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Cory Joseph this offseason, it appears as if Markelle Fultz’s time with the Orlando Magic has come to an end. Despite the label of being a “bust” as the No. 1 overall pick in 2017, Fultz has averaged 11.6 points and 4.8 assists per game while shooting 48.0 percent from the floor over the last five seasons in Orlando.</p><p>The 26-year-old point guard hasn’t commanded much attention in free agency around the NBA to this point, yet it would be surprising if he isn’t on a roster at the start of training camp. Fultz can still bring a lot to the table as a backup guard for a team that already has an established presence in their backcourt. Keep an eye on playoff-contending teams having interest in Fultz pertaining to one of their final roster spots and a minimum deal.</p><h2><b>Lonnie Walker IV – </b><b>Unrestricted free agent</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Lonnie-Walker-IV-shooting.jpg"><figcaption>Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>There may not be a better scoring weapon available in free agency right now than Lonnie Walker IV. With a variety of teams interested in his services last offseason, Walker opted to sign a one-year deal with the Brooklyn Nets. He averaged 9.7 points per game while shooting 38.4 percent from beyond the arc in 58 games with Brooklyn. Any team looking to bolster their bench scoring should want to gamble on Walker with a minimum contract, especially since he is still only 25 years old. Walker is yet another example of how the new financial rules in the CBA have impacted middle-class NBA free agents.</p><h2><b>Talen Horton-Tucker – </b><b>Unrestricted free agent</b></h2><p>Talen Horton-Tucker hasn’t received any real offers from NBA teams in free agency this offseason. The Dallas Mavericks were rumored to have interest in him, but they recently signed Spencer Dinwiddie to round out their roster.</p><p>Last season with the Utah Jazz, Horton-Tucker averaged 10.1 points and 3.5 assists per game while shooting 39.6 percent from the floor in 51 total games. Do not be surprised if there are quite a few European teams that show interest in the former Los Angeles Lakers second-round pick.</p><h2>Marcus Morris Sr. – <b>Unrestricted free agent</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Marcus-Morris-shoots-over-Jrue-Holiday.jpg"><figcaption>David Butler II-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Marcus Morris Sr. will be 35 by the time the 2024-25 season begins. Still, he has proven year-after-year to be a dependable scorer. Throughout the entirety of his career, Morris has always been known for being a shooter, and he shot over 40 percent from three-point range with the Philadelphia 76ers and Cleveland Cavaliers last season.</p><p>The Cavs still have open roster spots, one of which could go to Morris, and it is possible that the 76ers could explore the possibility of bringing back the veteran. In fact, Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer recently <a href="https://www.inquirer.com/sixers/sixers-marcus-morris-dvis-bertns-nba-free-agency-cleveland-cavaliers-20240801.html?utm_source=t.co&amp;utm_campaign=edit_social_share_twitter_traffic&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_content=&amp;utm_term=&amp;int_promo=" rel="noopener">flirted</a> with this idea. No matter where Morris ends up, he will be a reliable scorer on the bench.</p><h2><b>Danilo Gallinari – </b><b>Unrestricted free agent</b></h2><p>If there is one area in which Danilo Gallinari can still help a team as he gets set to turn 36 years old, it is three-point shooting. For his career, the Italian big man has shot 38.1 percent from three-point range. Do not let his 32.3 percent shooting from deep last season with the Washington Wizards, Detroit Pistons, and Milwaukee Bucks fool you. Even though knee injuries have limited Gallinari’s usage through the years, he is still an experienced offensive weapon who is an excellent option for a contending team to have on their bench. Should Gallinari’s time in the NBA be over, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him return to Italy and play in the EuroLeague.</p><h2><b>Evan Fournier – </b><b>Unrestricted free agent</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Pistons-Evan-Fournier-drives-against-the-Celtics.jpg"><figcaption>Lon Horwedel-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Much like Gallinari, Evan Fournier is a seasoned veteran who understands his role as a perimeter shooter in this league. Despite the 2023-24 season not being his best, Fournier has still managed to shoot 37.4 percent from three-point range for his career. Any team needing an extra spot-up shooter should look no further than the Frenchman on the wing. It doesn’t appear as if the veteran is having thoughts of leaving the NBA right now.</p><h2><b>Jae Crowder – </b><b>Unrestricted free agent</b></h2><p>It wasn’t too long ago that Jae Crowder was playing a pivotal role for the 2019-20 Miami Heat and the 2020-21 Phoenix Suns. Interestingly enough, both teams ended up making it to the NBA Finals. Known for his abilities as a 3-and-D wing who can guard virtually any position, Crowder brings toughness and experience to his organization. That is why the Milwaukee Bucks have valued his leadership over the last two seasons. However, the Bucks brought in others like Gary Trent Jr. and Taurean Prince this offseason, signaling that Crowder will need to look for a new team. The 34-year-old may wind up being a mid-season addition for any team that runs into injury problems.</p><h2><b>Robert Covington – </b><b>Unrestricted free agent</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Robert-Covington-shooting.jpg"><figcaption>Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>There are so many experienced forwards still remaining on the pen market that are viable three-point shooting options. Robert Covington is another one of those players, but he stands out because of his defensive versatility as a small-ball center. He has the size to still be a rotational defender in this league, and Covington has always been a pretty reliable three-point shooter. Well, you've come to the right place.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Editorials</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>After nearly a month on the open market, Tyus Jones has officially found his next NBA team in the Phoenix Suns, who signed the veteran point guard to a<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/suns-news-tyus-jones-agrees-to-3-3-million-contract"> one-year, $3.3 million contract</a> that truly shocked fans across the NBA.</p><p>Now, for fans of the Suns, this was the<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/suns-2024-nba-free-agency-grades-for-every-signing"> best mid-summer surprise they could imagine</a>, as Phoenix was somehow able to secure a starting-caliber player without so much as a mid-level exception to play with, even if they had to promise the 28-year-old a starting spot to secure his services. But one team’s treasure is every other team’s mistaken non-signing, with fans of seemingly all 29 other NBA teams coming out of the woodwork to complain that their GM didn’t secure Jones’ services.</p><p>Are some of these fanbases overreacting? Sure, but there are a few who should be genuinely upset about losing out on Jones, as he would have been an ideal fit with their respective team.</p><h2><b>3 teams that should have signed Tyus Jones</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Tyus-Jones-playing-against-the-Suns.jpg"><figcaption>Petre Thomas-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><h2><b>1. Los Angeles Lakers</b></h2><p>When news broke that Tyus Jones had agreed to a one-year, $3.3 million contract with the Suns, the one fanbase that immediately took to social media to air out their disgust with the situation was the Los Angeles Lakers, who haven’t done much of anything in free agency thus far.</p><p>Now on paper, some may argue that a point guard like Jones might not have been the ideal addition to the Lakers, as he’s one of the smaller point guards in the NBA, position un-versatile, and would force the team to shuffle around their starting five should they have retained the rest of their rotation. Then again, Jones is absolutely a playoff-caliber performer who could have helped to make LeBron James and Anthony Davis’ lives easier, all the while freeing up the potential to reshape the roster even further with subsequent trades.</p><p>Would the Lakers look better today with Jones and, say, Jerami Grant – who, for better or worse, has <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/zach-lowes-jerami-grant-lakers-remark-has-fans-buzzing">been linked to the team repeatedly</a> – if they could swap out D’Angelo Russell in a three-team trade that also includes a team like the Brooklyn Nets, who <a href="https://lakersnation.com/lakers-rumors-nets-open-to-reunion-with-dangelo-russell/" rel="noopener">reportedly would like to reunite</a> with D-Lo? Debatable, but unfortunately, that option is no longer on the table.</p><h2><b>2. Miami Heat</b></h2><p>If Lakers fans were the most disappointed fanbase in the NBA after the Tyus Jones news broke, the second-most discouraged collection of supporters has to belong to the Miami Heat, who, like LA, is darn disappointed with how their offseason is shaking out.</p><p>Much like the Lakers, the Heat do technically have a point guard in Terry Rozier, who they traded for last season in a PG swap with the Charlotte Hornets involving Kyle Lowry, but after losing Caleb Martin in a situation best described as a contractual snafu, the team could seriously use another top-8 player to fill out the roster, especially one who can run the offense, moving forward. With little money to spend but a serious need to get better, adding Jones for under $4 million could have presented the Heat with an easy way to do just that and more.</p><p>While Jones is a tad undersized for the position at 6-foot, 196 pounds, he is coming off the best season of his professional career, scoring 12 points and 7.3 assists per game while shooting 48.9 percent from the field and 41.4 percent from 3 on solid volume. Play him alongside Tyler Hero, Josh Richardson, or even Rozier in the starting five, rotate him onto the court whenever Jimmy Butler needs a break, no matter how the Heat decided to use him, Jones felt like a perfect fit with the Heat and his presence will be missed as a result.</p><h2><b>3. Washington Wizards</b></h2><p>Of all the teams in the NBA seemingly in the market for a starting point guard, the team who knew Tyus Jones best of all was the team that could have theoretically brought him back at a much higher value than $3.3 million: the Washington Wizards.</p><p>Originally acquiring Jones from the Memphis Grizzlies last season after the former first-round pick out of Duke turned in a fantastic run in place of Ja Morant in the starting lineup, the veteran point guard seemingly found a home in the nation’s capital, hitting new career highs virtually across the board while helping to make life easier for young players like Bilal Coulibaly.</p><p>With Alexandre Sarr now in place as the Wizards’ new face of the franchise, Jones seemingly could have been even more valuable for the Wizards this season and likely would have drawn a contract worth four-to-six times as much as he will earn from the Phoenix Suns; unfortunately, it just wasn’t meant to be, even if the pairing was arguably the best in the NBA considering the financial circumstances teams are facing around the association.</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Luckily, basketball fans around the world will get to watch some of their favorite NBA talents in action during the Olympics in Paris, France, yet most of the drama that comes with every offseason is in the rear-view mirror. Still, trade talks will continue, and teams will look to finalize their rosters ahead of training camp in September with several key free agents that have yet to find a new contract during NBA free agency.</p><p>As is the case every summer, several notable names find themselves in search of a new home as free agents around the NBA following Summer League. However, this offseason is slightly different because of how money is being distributed across the league.</p><p>In the past, teams have spent their funds freely with no major implications other than having to pay extra in luxury taxes. Now, in addition to having major tax bills, the league’s new stipulations surrounding teams that cross the first and second tax aprons have caused organizations to rethink their strategies pertaining to long-term costs.</p><p>This is why several key names, such as Tyus Jones, Isaac Okoro, and others, remain free agents across the NBA at the conclusion of Summer League. Here is the latest on the best remaining free agents this offseason.</p><h2><b>Tyus Jones – </b><b>Unrestricted free agent</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Tyus-Jones.jpg"><figcaption>Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>There is no question that Jones is the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/3-best-tyus-jones-nba-free-agency-destinations">best player remaining</a> as a free agent for NBA teams to pursue. The problem right now is that very few teams have openings in their backcourt, and those that would have a need for a player like Jones don’t necessarily have the money to spend on him. As much as the new tax aprons have impacted a middle-tier player like Jones, he himself has also hurt his chances to receive a new, lucrative contract in free agency due to his desire to remain a starting point guard.</p><p>This past season with the Washington Wizards, Jones averaged 12.0 points, 7.3 assists, and 1.1 steals per game while shooting 41.4 percent from the floor. His 7.3 assist-to-turnover ratio is why teams are wanting to bring in the 28-year-old guard as a key sixth man. It continues to look likely that Jones will need to accept a one-year deal with a team and enter NBA free agency yet again next offseason in search of a long-term deal. Of course, the option of the Wizards executing a sign-and-trade with another team willing to give Jones a three-year deal is also an option.</p><p>Very few teams have open roster spots at this time, leaving Jones’ options extremely thin if he is unwilling to accept a minimum contract for the 2024-25 season.</p><h2><b>Isaac Okoro – R</b><b>estricted free agent</b></h2><p>The idea of players holding leverage when it comes to being restricted free agents has diminished across the NBA in recent years. No player has signed an offer sheet with a different team as a restricted free agent this offseason, and Okoro remains the only notable player on the open market who has <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/how-isaac-okoro-could-decide-cavs-free-agency">this kind of option</a> to agree to an offer sheet as a free agent.</p><p>Whether or not Okoro returns to the Cleveland Cavaliers depends on what the organization is planning on the trade market. The Cavs have been linked to several wing talents, most of which are more proven on the offensive end of the court than Okoro. However, the 23-year-old had a great 2023-24 campaign in which he proved to be a very strong perimeter defender on the wing. It is not hard to imagine that Cleveland will bring him back on a team-friendly contract at this stage, a deal that could set the Cavs up for a roster move ahead of the trade deadline.</p><p>There is still a lot to like about Okoro and where he is in his development, which is why the Cavaliers shouldn’t be so keen to give up on him yet. Then again, new contract extensions for Evan Mobley and Donovan Mitchell have put the Cavs in a bind pertaining to what they could offer Okoro long-term.</p><h2><b>Precious Achiuwa – </b><b>Unrestricted free agent</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Precious-Achiuwa-dunks-against-the-Philadelphia-76ers-in-early-March.jpg"><figcaption>Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>When the New York Knicks were unable to retain Isaiah Hartenstein earlier this offseason, it seemed like a forgone conclusion that they would be re-signing Precious Achiuwa. Right now, the Knicks are hard-capped at the second apron ($188.9 million), and their current payroll exceeds $171 million. Including the contracts of Pacome Dadiet and Tyler Kolek, the Knicks have 13 players on their active roster.</p><p>Achiuwa may very likely <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5645318/2024/07/18/knicks-roster-analysis-precious-achiuwa-cameron-payne/" rel="noopener">end up</a> being the 14th player for the Knicks because of the need they have in their frontcourt. New York has been searching for ways to bring in more help alongside Mitchell Robinson and Julius Randle, yet not many options exist for them on the trade market due to Miles McBride, Jericho Sims, and Keita Bates-Diop being the only players they can trade outside of their core group.</p><p>While it seems likely that the Knicks will ultimately bring back Achiuwa, who made an impact near the end of last season, the possibility of the team utilizing him in another offseason trade is also an option.</p><h2><b>Gordon Hayward – </b><b>Unrestricted free agent</b></h2><p>What happened with the Oklahoma City Thunder is forgettable for Gordon Hayward. Once thought to be the best trade made by a contending team last season, Hayward made little to no impact with the Thunder. Now, the 34-year-old forward appears to have one foot out the door of the NBA as a result of his numerous injuries through the years and remaining on the free agent market.</p><p>Throughout the course of his career, Hayward has always been a reliable three-point shooter. His experiences through the years and leadership in the locker room could be valuable for any playoff-contending team, regardless if he plays real minutes or not. It would be surprising if he wasn’t on a roster ahead of training camp.</p><h2><b>Markelle Fultz – </b><b>Unrestricted free agent</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Markelle-Fultz-dribbling-the-basketball.jpeg"><figcaption>Mike Watters-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>The Orlando Magic recently signed veteran point guard Cory Joseph to a contract, likely signaling the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/magic-news-orlandos-latest-addition-is-bad-news-for-markelle-fultzs-chances-of-returning">end of Markelle Fultz’s tenure</a> with the franchise. Fultz, who was drafted first overall in 2017 by the Philadelphia 76ers over the likes of Jayson Tatum, De’Aaron Fox, Donovan Mitchell, and others, revitalized his career in Orlando over the last handful of seasons. Since 2019, Fultz has averaged 11.6 points and 4.8 assists per game while shooting 48.0 percent from the floor in a Magic uniform.</p><p>The 26-year-old doesn’t appear to have a market at this time and would be nothing more than a minimum-contract player for any team at this stage of free agency.</p><h2><b>Luke Kennard</b></h2><p>When the Memphis Grizzlies decided to opt out of Luke Kennard’s $14.8 million team option, the organization was of the belief that they could bring back the sharpshooter on a more team-friendly deal given their financial situation. As free agency has dragged on for Kennard, the chances of him returning to the Grizzlies have not grown.</p><p>Through his first seven years in the NBA, Kennard has shot 43.9 percent from three-point range, making a total of 790 triples. Since entering the league in 2017, Kennard has led the NBA in three-point shooting percentage two different times.</p><p>Plenty of teams could utilize a player like Kennard, and the Grizzlies may have to move some numbers around just to re-sign him. Memphis did recently trade Ziaire Williams to the Brooklyn Nets, which could be a precursor to them creating a chunk of funds to bring Kennard back for the 2024-25 season.</p><h2><b>Marcus Morris Sr. – </b><b>Unrestricted free agent</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Marcus-Morris-Sr.-shooting.jpg"><figcaption>David Butler II-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Throughout the entirety of his career, Marcus Morris Sr. has always been known for being a shooter and scorer from virtually every spot on the floor. His defense can be suspect at times, but Morris can always give his team a spark in any game against any opponent when he gets going. This was apparent last year when the veteran forward joined the Cavaliers, immediately providing them with an experienced shooting option on the wing.</p><p>Morris is certainly worth a minimum contract for many teams, but his personality and aggressive confidence obviously rub some organizations the wrong way. At some point, he <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-76ers-cavs-mavericks-multiple-teams-interested-marcus-morris">will get another chance</a> to make a deep postseason run with a team.</p><h2><b>Lonnie Walker IV – </b><b>Unrestricted free agent</b></h2><p>Various teams had interest in Lonnie Walker IV after his short stint with the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2022-23 season. Ultimately, he decided to join the Brooklyn Nets on a minimum deal. There, Walker showed flashes of his scoring prowess off the bench, averaging 9.7 points per game while shooting 38.4 percent from beyond the arc.</p><p>Walker is one of those flamethrower players in the sense that he can score on consecutive possessions once he sees the ball go through the hoop. At the same time, Walker can be somewhat of a loose cannon on offense due to him never surrendering confidence and continuing to shoot when shots aren’t falling. Seeing as Gary Trent Jr. recently signed with the Milwaukee Bucks on a minimum deal, Walker should be next in line to sign with a contender on a similar contract.</p><h2><b>Talen Horton-Tucker – </b><b>Unrestricted free agent</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Talen-Horton-Tucker-warming-up.jpg"><figcaption>Rob Gray-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Talen Horton-Tucker hasn’t received any real offers from NBA teams in free agency this offseason. The Dallas Mavericks were rumored to have interest in him, but they recently signed Spencer Dinwiddie to round out their roster. It doesn’t appear as if a return to the Utah Jazz is in order for Horton-Tucker either.</p><p>At 23 years old, Horton-Tucker faces a scenario where he will need to accept a minimum offer just to stay in the league. The only problem is that this offer has yet to come in, which may result in the five-year veteran having to seek opportunities overseas to prove himself. In 51 games with the Jazz last season, Horton-Tucker averaged 10.1 points and 3.5 assists per game while shooting 39.6 percent from the floor. His lack of three-point shooting has resulted in his decline through the years.</p><h2><b>Danilo Gallinari – Unrestricted free agent</b></h2><p>Despite all of the knee problems he has had over the course of his career, seeing Danilo Gallinari remain unsigned is a surprise. No matter what team he has been with, Gallinari has always shot well from three-point range, and his length on the wing is advantageous as well. Unfortunately, the Italian big man has lost a step in recent years, directly impacting his ability to remain on the floor as a consistent shooting weapon.</p><p>It doesn’t help that Gallinari’s short stints with the Washington Wizards, Detroit Pistons, and Milwaukee Bucks last year were all unsuccessful. If he wants to go overseas and continue his basketball career, Gallinari will likely have multiple offers from premier European clubs. However, as far as prolonging his career in the NBA goes, Gallinari has yet to receive serious interest from teams. That could potentially change with the start of training camp around the corner.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

This, however, is not to say that there aren’t quality players who are still searching for a home for the upcoming season. In particular, teams would be remiss not to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/3-best-tyus-jones-nba-free-agency-destinations">float Tyus Jones a call</a>, even if that team, in particular the Los Angeles Clippers, doesn’t necessarily need a point guard.</p><p>Jones is one of the best playmakers in the association, averaging 7.3 dimes a night last year for the Washington Wizards. He has always found a way to produce when given minutes, making it a bit of a marvel that he hasn’t yet found a team to latch onto for the 2024-25 campaign. But that appears to be changing.</p><p>The Clippers, despite being heavy guard-heavy, <a href="https://hoopshype.com/lists/nba-rumors-team-usa-clippers-76ers-suns-grizzlies-knicks-nets-magic-pistons/" rel="noopener">have shown interest</a> in Tyus Jones, according to the sources of HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto. Cap space has mostly dried up in the association, which means that teams may have to engage with the Wizards on a sign-and-trade to acquire Jones’ services.</p><p>Jones should be making eight digits annually; coming off a season in which he made $14.5 million, he is very much worth a similar amount over multiple years. He is only 28 years old, and it’s not like his game relies on top-shelf athleticism to thrive.</p><p>The Wizards, despite being expected to<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/wizards-biggest-mistake-at-2024-nba-trade-deadline"> trade Tyus Jones away</a> at the 2024 NBA trade deadline, decided to hold on to him. This opened up the possibility that Jones will be staying in D.C. past the 2023-24 campaign. But the Wizards’ earlier trade this offseason for Malcolm Brogdon, not to mention their decision to draft talented guard Carlton Carrington, means that Washington is likely to move on from the 28-year-old.</p><p>But will the Clippers actually be the team that acquires Jones’ services?</p><h2>Why are the Clippers interested in Tyus Jones?</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Tyus-Jones.jpg"></figure><p>Tyus Jones is one of the easiest players to fit on any roster. For starters, he doesn’t command the ball too much. He is not ball-dominant and usage-heavy, and he has a low ego to match. He is an unselfish, pass-first point guard who doesn’t rely on hogging the ball to set his teammates up for success.</p><p>Jones is also a heady presence in the locker room, and he functions almost like a second coach whenever he’s out there on the court. The Minnesota Timberwolves and Memphis Grizzlies loved him, and the Wizards franchise also raved about him, which is a testament to his character and his impact.</p><p>For a Clippers team in flux, adding a stabilizing presence like Jones as well as another playmaker to set a team full of play-finishers up for success is enticing. But the Clippers have such a logjam at the guard positions that it’s not quite clear how they will sort this problem out at the moment.</p><p>The Clippers, despite not making it official yet, have agreed to sign Kris Dunn, adding to their roster full of guards which includes Russell Westbrook, Bones Hyland, Norman Powell, Terance Mann, and Kevin Porter Jr. For those counting at home, the Clippers already have seven players who can slot in at the guard positions. The Clippers are likely to trade away Westbrook anyway, but even then, that is still way too many players to have for those positions.</p><p>But at the end of the day, Tyus Jones’ decision as to which team he’ll be joining for the 2024-25 season will hinge on what role he foresees himself playing. With the Clippers, Jones will most likely come off the bench, what with Harden taking control of the offense at the point. A Harden and Jones backcourt may also not be too appealing to put out on the court defensively, so that option should be out of the window.</p><p>Jones became a full-time starting point guard for the first time in his career last year with the Wizards, putting up 12.0 points and 7.3 dimes a night on 49/41/80 splits; is he willing to go back to being a backup the way he was in the first eight years of his career?</p><p>There may not be a single opening around the league for a starting floor general. The closest team there is that’s in need of a player of Jones’ archetype is the Phoenix Suns, and they are simply too hamstrung by being in the second tax apron to do much of anything. Paul George has signed with the Philadelphia 76ers, Klay Thompson is heading to the Dallas Mavericks, and DeMar DeRozan recently joined the Sacramento Kings. At this point, teams have spent the money that they could, leaving <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/10-best-players-available-demar-derozan-nba-free-agency">key names still available</a> on the free agent market. One of those players still seeking a new opportunity and contract is Tyus Jones, who had a variety of teams interested in his services entering the summer.</p><p>Unfortunately, Jones remains unsigned due to the point guard market as a whole being very dry. Many teams around the league don’t have a need for a new starting point guard at this moment, and Jones’ free agency was hit hard by teams not spending as much as usual due to the league’s new financial rules.</p><p>With the Washington Wizards this past season, Jones proved that he has what it takes to be a starting point guard. In a total of 66 games, all of which he started for the Wizards, Jones averaged a career-high 12.0 points, 7.3 assists, and 2.7 rebounds per game while shooting 41.4 percent from three-point range.</p><p>Perhaps his most impressive statistic is that the Wizards point guard recorded a 7.3 assist-to-turnover ratio, turning the ball over a total of 66 times over 66 games. For his career, Jones has a 5.6 assist-to-turnover ratio.</p><p>There are numerous teams out there that could utilize Jones’ services, especially off the bench. Whether or not they have the financial flexibility or the roster spot to pursue Jones is a completely different question for organizations around the NBA.</p><p>Currently in the midst of July, these are the best destinations for Jones heading into the 2024-25 season.</p><h2><b>Orlando Magic</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Tyus-Jones.jpg"><figcaption>Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>If Jones is looking for the best opportunity to make the playoffs and still hold a key role in the backcourt, he should strongly consider pursuing a sixth-man-like role with the Orlando Magic. This past season, Orlando won a total of 47 games, increasing their win total by 13 total games. Under head coach Jamahl Mosley, the Magic have shown tremendous growth and potential.</p><p>Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero highlight the Magic’s roster, and they <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/magic-news-kentavious-caldwell-pope-leaving-nuggets-for-orlando">recently signed</a> two-time NBA champion Kentavious Caldwell-Pope in free agency. Already being one of the best defensive teams in the league, the Magic simply need more firepower on offense to be competitive in the playoffs. Jones may not be the best scoring guard, but he can truly bring out the best in his teammates. After all, Jones proved to be one of the best playmakers and facilitators at the point guard position with Washington last season.</p><p>The Magic have been searching for answers in their backcourt for years. Markelle Fultz wasn’t the answer, and while Cole Anthony has played well off the bench, he has struggled to cement himself as a core scoring weapon. Next to All-Defensive guard Jalen Suggs, Jones would be a very valuable veteran for the Magic to turn to at the point guard position. In addition to opening up the floor for others on this roster offensively, Jones would also take a lot of pressure off Banchero and Wagner to do everything.</p><p>As their roster is currently constructed, the Magic are not hard-capped, and they are close to $30 million below the first tax apron. Orlando also has access to their $7.9 million room mid-level exception, which could be utilized to bring in Jones.</p><h2><b>Brooklyn Nets</b></h2><p>The Brooklyn Nets have <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nets-gm-sean-marks-reveals-why-took-knicks-mikal-bridges-trade-offer">entered rebuild mode</a>. Mikal Bridges is now a member of the New York Knicks, and it shouldn’t be long until the Nets end up moving Cam Johnson for more future draft picks. Nic Claxton and Cam Thomas are now the focal points in Brooklyn, a team that won’t have that high of expectations in the Eastern Conference entering the 2024-25 season.</p><p>Other than Dennis Schroder, the Nets do not have a point guard on their roster, which is why Jones could help fill some of the gaps during this rebuild. Should he go to Brooklyn and play well, perhaps the Nets could then flip Jones for more value in trade talks.</p><p>Out of all the teams in the league, the Nets may be one of the only teams that has a clear opportunity for Jones to come in and play right away, potentially as the starting point guard. Brooklyn also has access to their full mid-level exception, and they are about $11 million under their $178 million first apron hard cap for the upcoming year.</p><h2><b>Miami Heat</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Tyus-Jones-vs.-Heat.jpg"><figcaption>Sam Navarro-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>If there is one thing we can always count on from Pat Riley, it is to put together a Miami Heat roster that will compete at the highest level possible. So far this offseason, the Heat have struck out when it comes to pursuing talent for two reasons.</p><p>The first is that the Heat currently have a payroll that exceeds $180 million, which puts them right at the second tax apron line. The second reason behind Miami’s inability to add another big name to their roster is the fact that they haven’t been able to trade Duncan Robinson, who is set to make $19.4 million this upcoming year. Robinson is one of the only trade pieces the Heat have that can match an incoming contract, yet no team in the league has <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-heat-demar-derozan-tyus-jones-trades">shown interest in acquiring him</a>, according to ESPN’s <a href="https://x.com/BobbyMarks42" rel="noopener">Bobby Marks</a>.</p><p>Unless Miami is able to move Robinson, their only other options in terms of making a trade involve dealing either Terry Rozier or Tyler Herro. At this time, it doesn’t appear as if the Heat are wanting to move either guard, which is why they haven’t been able to find common ground on a deal to acquire Jones in a potential sign-and-trade.</p><p>In terms of his fit with the Heat, not taking into account the logistics of a contract, Jones would be an excellent sixth man to have behind Rozier and Herro. His playmaking abilities would pair nicely with those of Bam Adebayo and Jimmy Butler, plus Jones is the type of calm player that tends to thrive in Erik Spoelstra’s system. However, if there is no avenue for a sign-and-trade, the Heat’s only hope of landing Jones would be on a minimum contract for the 2024-25 season, which looks unlikely.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Without low-cost difference makers or multiple first round draft picks able to be moved, it was always going to be difficult for the Heat to get a deal done.</p><p>DeRozan ended up agreeing to a sign-and-trade to the Sacramento Kings. That means that Miami is only guaranteed to keep Butler in South Beach until the end of the 2024-25 season.</p><p>Butler and his camp have reportedly not been shy about letting the Heat know that they would prefer to come to terms to a maximum contract extension as soon as possible. However, Miami’s front office hasn’t been willing to cave to the 34-year-old wing’s demands, paving the way for a potential Butler trade out of Miami.</p><p>Nonetheless, the Heat are reportedly putting their feet down and keeping Jimmy Butler out of trade talks completely. Butler, on the other hand, is now looking to test his value in the market, further incentivizing him to put up a great 2024-25 campaign.</p><p>Given the going rate for quality forwards these days, trading Jimmy Butler away isn’t the worst idea for the Heat. However, a Butler trade means that Miami is going to retool the roster, and they may not be ready yet to give up on their current core.</p><p>The Heat, however, need to step up if they hope to keep up with the other giants of the Eastern Conference. Besides trading away Daniel Gafford to the Dallas Mavericks, they pretty much kept their team intact, especially with the likes of stars Kyle Kuzma and Tyus Jones, whom the latter had a lot of chatter about being moved.</p><p>In an interview with Josh Robbins of The Athletic, Jones was candid in talking about his trade status and what the conversations were like between himself and the front office. There was some surprise it seemed from Jones as he mentioned that management like President Michael Singer were <a href="https://theathletic.com/5271857/2024/02/13/kyle-kuzma-wizards-mavericks-near-trade/?access_token=68838&amp;redirected=1" rel="noopener">“open and honest”</a> with the point guard and his agent.</p><p>“They were open and honest with me and my agent, honestly, from the beginning and just more so down the stretch closer to the deadline just because stuff picks up,” Jones said. “But I appreciate Will and Michael for that just because they don’t have to do that; they have a job to do.</p><h2><b>Tyus Jones “appreciated” the Wizards keeping him with the team</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Players_Wizards_must_move_at_2024_NBA_trade_deadline_2.webp"></figure><p>There was feeling of being appreciative for being honest and keeping the star’s party “in the loop and keeping us informed” about where the front office were thinking in terms of a trade. At the end of the day, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/wizards-biggest-mistake-at-2024-nba-trade-deadline" rel="noopener">Jones is still with the Wizards</a>, which was ultimately a decision that the 27-year old enjoyed since he wants to lead the team which he takes “tremendous pride” in doing per The Athletic.</p><p>“But at the same time, them just kind of keeping us in the loop and keeping us informed and kind of seeing where our heads were at and just letting us know what they were thinking, what they were hearing and certain conversations they were having — it was a blessing. And it was much appreciated,” Jones said. “Ultimately, them keeping me here was appreciated as well. I’m glad to be here, glad to put on a Wizards uniform and continue to build with these guys and try to lead. I take a tremendous pride in being a leader in this locker room and being a leader on this team and for this organization. So, for the front office to continue to trust in me and believe in me, I appreciate that, and we’re going to continue to take steps forward here.”</p><h2><b>Kyle Kuzma honest about possible trade away from Washington</b></h2><p>On the season, Jones is averaging 12.6 points, 6.7 assists, and 2.8 rebounds per game while shooting 49.7 percent from the field. Another trade target for the Wizards was Kyle Kuzma who is their leading scorer with 21.8 points per game to go along with 6.3 rebounds and 4.2 assists.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-key-factor-wizards-kyle-kuzma-trade-plans-deadline-mavericks-kings-interest" rel="noopener">Kuzma also had an</a> interview with Robbins of The Athletic and was also honest about the conversations him and Washington had. He even mentioned that Winger showed Kumza a trade that the Dallas Mavericks had offered and left the decision up to him if he wanted to accept it.</p><p>“There was a point in time, Dallas, they definitely did want me,” Kuzma said. “Winger presented me with what the trade was and obviously didn’t want to trade me and kind of left the decision up to me a little bit and asked me what I wanted to do. I told him I wanted to stay and continue to build something. And that was kind of the end of it.”</p><p>“In my career, I won a championship,” Kuzma continued when talking about wanting to stay with the Wizards. “So, I understand that when we play this game of basketball it’s not about contending for a playoff spot. It’s about contending for an NBA championship. There’s only like three or four contenders — true contenders. I just felt like our timelines didn’t line up.”</p><h2><b>Wizards president honest with Jones and Kuzma </b></h2><p>President of the Wizards in Winger also spoke to The Athletic and reinforced how huge of a piece Kyle Kuzma has been for the team since they acquired him in 2021. He would go on to say that he is a “significant contributor to our developing culture.:”</p><p>“Kyle’s an important player for us and (a) significant contributor to our developing culture,” Winger said. “His commitment is necessary for us to achieve our competitive and environmental objectives. Under the circumstances, I wanted to check in with his belief to continue leading us. He reemphasized his desire to forge ahead, and we’re honored to have him.”</p><p>Hearing from Jones and now Kuzma, there is no doubt that Winger is a collaborative basketball President, which is not something fans hear of that much anymore. Joel Embiid is a generational talent, but he has a long injury and was recently diagnosed with a torn meniscus. There is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/76ers-news-philadelphia-re-evaluate-joel-embiid-four-weeks-meniscus-procedure" rel="noopener">optimism in Philly that Embiid</a> will be back for the playoffs, and if he is able to return, the Sixers must push all their chips to the middle of the table and go all in for the Larry O’Brien Trophy.</p><p>The Washington Wizards are rebuilding, and they need to collect as many assets as possible to accelerate their rebuild.</p><p>A <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/insider/insider/story/_/id/39408945/2024-nba-trade-deadline-six-big-trades-want-see-lakers-hawks-nets-knicks-76ers" rel="noopener">hypothetical deal between</a> these two clubs was recently proposed by ESPN’s Tim Bontemps. Let’s break down the deal and give each team a grade.</p><h2><b>Philadelphia 76ers get: Tyus Jones</b></h2><h2><b>Washington Wizards get: Robert Covington, Kenyon Martin Jr. and two second-round picks</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Wizards__trade_deadline_plans_start_with_Kyle_Kuzma_-_3.webp"></figure><p>This proposed deal will see the 76ers land a quality contributor for their rotation while giving up two players at the end of their bench along with two second-round draft picks. The expectation in Philadelphia would be that Jones can contribute as a secondary initiator and shooter offensively when playing with the starters, and that he can take more of a lead initiator role when playing with the second unit.</p><p>When the team is at full strength, Jones will likely see the bulk of his playing time with the second unit. However, with the health issues the team is currently facing and Tyrese Maxey being forced to carry a heavy burden, Jones will be expected to do more in the short term to reduce the work on Maxey’s plate.</p><p>Robert Covington and Kenyon Martin Jr. have played 809 combined minutes this season, so their departures won’t be a significant loss for the 76ers. As pending free agents, they will not require a long-term financial commitment from the Wizards.</p><h2><b>A tale of two teams in Philadelphia</b></h2><p>In years past, the 76ers in the Joel Embiid era have been a tale of two teams. They have often looked dominant when Embiid is on the court and then looked like a lottery team when he had to take a breather.</p><p>Tyrese Maxey’s growth into a star has made the starting unit even better, and the Sixers have added some bench players. However, with Maxey being asked to do more with Embiid out, he is unable to help out the second unit at times, causing the play without Embiid to crater the same way it used to.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-76ers-eyeing-tyus-jones-trade-but-theres-a-catch" rel="noopener">76ers need help</a> with their second unit. They don’t currently have a capable ball-handler to lead their offense when Maxey is off the court. Guys such as Jaden Springer and Ricky Council IV are intriguing young players, but neither of them profile as lead ball-handlers capable of efficiently initiating an offense.</p><p>Springer would need to improve as a ball-handler, and Council IV is too young and inexperienced to be relied upon as an offensive initiator. Council IV has the potential to be a good microwave scorer in the future because of his strength and explosiveness. However, he has a long way to go and needs to improve all aspects of his game before he can focus on becoming more of a facilitator who can efficiently create open looks for others without turning the ball over.</p><p>For the Sixers to remain in the playoff race, they must bring in a player who can serve as the lead ball-handler for the second unit to prevent the team from falling off a cliff in non-Maxey minutes. The ideal player would also be capable of playing alongside Maxey to take some of the pressure off of the young point guard.</p><p>Jones has 303 assists this year against just 43 turnovers. He knows how to make things happen on offense while protecting the ball, and that is an essential skill for the lead playmaker to have.</p><p>To be sure, Jones is not somebody who will be a true needle-mover for the Sixers. This is why it is important not to give up too many assets for a player who will have a role off the bench but will never be a star. The Sixers should keep their premiere trade assets available for a future move, either this summer or at next year’s trade deadline.</p><p>Trading away two lower-impact players and second round picks is a fair price to give up for a player who can make meaningful contributions night in and night out and who can stabilize Philly’s second unit.</p><p><b>76ers Grade: A-</b></p><h2>The Wizards need to prepare for their future</h2><p>The Wizards are not competitive this year, and they are going into what will likely be a long rebuilding process. Jones is unlikely to stick around in Washington long enough to be a part of their next competitive core. The Wizards should do what any team entering an extended rebuild process should do: Strip the roster down to its key players and trade away anybody who does not fit into the organization’s long-term plans.</p><p>When the Wizards accept that they will not be competitive in the near future, there is no reason to keep players who won’t be part of the team four or five years from now. This is an inefficient way of building a team for several reasons. First, players such as Jones are good enough to contribute towards winning basketball. Unfortunately, teams entering an extended rebuild are not looking to win a few extra games per season. That doesn’t do anything positive for them in the long run and it could actually be counterproductive in the short term, harming their standing in the draft order each season. A couple of wins may not sound like a lot, but moving down two or three slots in the draft order can be the difference between drafting a generational talent and drafting somebody who’s ceiling is making one or two All-Star appearances.</p><p>Second, having players such as Jones on your roster who are good enough to contribute but won’t move the needle can prevent a rebuilding team from giving young players the heavy minutes they need to develop. Teams that are rebuilding should be focused on developing young talent as opposed to giving minutes to decent players who are contributors but not quite difference makers.</p><p>The prudent move for the Wizards is to deal every player currently on the roster who are not expected to be a part of their next championship team. While they won’t get much for Jones, Robert Covington and Kenyon Martin Jr. can potentially be flipped for additional assets. The two second round picks can be packaged with their own first round pick to move up a few slots if there is a guy they really like, or they can be used to add additional low-cost lottery tickets to their roster.</p><p>This isn’t a bad deal, but the Wizards may be able to get a late first from somebody else. Because Covington and Martin Jr. are both free agents at the end of the season, there isn’t much time to flip them. A deal would have to be lined up immediately, and the closer it gets to the deadline the less likely that is to occur. Wizards may be better off asking for another second round pick from Philadelphia instead or looking elsewhere. Still, Washington could do a lot worse than this return package.</p><p><b>Wizards Grade: B-</b></p><h2><b>Why this deal works for both 76ers, Wizards</b></h2><p>This is a good deal in that neither team will “lose” this trade. The 76ers will address their needs by adding a player who will contribute this season while the draft picks they are giving up are unlikely to be too consequential.</p><p>The Wizards will be adding two expiring contracts and two draft picks that will likely be long shot lottery tickets. If Washington keeps the picks and ends up adding a contributor, they will consider that a nice bonus. Washington will most likely use these picks to add intriguing players that need time to develop, or they could package these picks to move up a few slots in the first round for a player they really like.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Speculation is the franchise is potentially showing interest in Kyle Kuzma and Tyus Jones of the Washington Wizards. There’s even a dream scenario where Sacramento could land both players.</p><p>General manager Monte McNair has reportedly been taking a look at Kuzma throughout the season <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sources-how-grizzlies-rockets-steven-adams-trade-impacts-2024-nba-trade-deadline" rel="noopener">as a potential trade target</a>, according to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints. If a trade were to occur, the Kings would be more interested in dealing Kevin Huerter and Davion Mitchell away instead of Harrison Barnes.</p><p>“Monte McNair has once again taken a look at Kuzma, a player he has shown interest in before. Sacramento would much rather discuss trade opportunities centered around Kevin Huerter and Davion Mitchell than Harrison Barnes at this point, sources said. The Kings are said to be searching for a defensive-minded wing.”</p><p>Although neither Kyle Kuzma or Tyus Jones fit that defensive-wing mold, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kings-news-domantas-sabonis-obliterates-grizzlies-unreal-20-20-feat-wilt-chamberlain" rel="noopener">the Kings could</a> be in the mix of landing both players. Siegel claims Kuzma and Jones would be a great fit in Sacramento’s lineup to help De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis. On top of that, the deal makes sense financially. Albeit, Sacramento would likely have to add some draft capital to make the deal go through to interest the Wizards.</p><p>“Both players would provide Sacramento with the secondary stability that they have been lacking around De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis. The $37.7 million combined salaries of Barnes, Huerter, and Mitchell would almost equal the $39.5 million of Kuzma and Jones combined. The Kings would not be able to trade an outright first-round pick until 2026.”</p><p>It’ll be interesting to see if Sacramento can get a deal done. The Kings aim to make a playoff appearance in back-to-back seasons. With a dearth of marquee two-way impact players available leading up to February 8th after OG Anunoby and Pascal Siakam found new homes, though, Daryl Morey is also eyeing the possibility of more subtle reinforcements—specifically, a backup point guard behind breakout star Tyrese Maxey.</p><p>The Sixers <a href="https://www.actionnetwork.com/nba/nba-trade-rumors-deadline-agendas-for-all-30-teams" rel="noopener">have “interest”</a> in Washington Wizards floor general Tyus Jones, according to Matt Moore of Action Network. But steady a hand as Jones provides setting the offensive table, Philly is reportedly unwilling to include anything more than second-round picks in a potential deal for the veteran point guard. Jones’ desire to remain a starter and earn a long-term payday in free agency this summer complicates the team’s pursuit of him, too.</p><p>“They have interest in the Wizards’ Tyus Jones but are only willing to commit second-rounders for a starter in Washington looking for starter money this summer,” Moore reported on Friday.</p><h2><b>Does Tyus Jones make sense with the 76ers?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Players_Wizards_must_move_at_2024_NBA_trade_deadline_2.webp"></figure><p>The Wizards acquired Jones in the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/celtics-news-kristaps-porzingis-traded-to-boston-in-new-3-team-stunner-including-marcus-smart-grizzlies" rel="noopener">stunning offseason trade</a> that sent Kristaps Porzingis to the Boston Celtics and Marcus Smart to the Memphis Grizzlies. He’s played better than ever in D.C. despite the team’s widespread struggles in year one of an arduous rebuild, averaging 12.5 points, 2.9 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game while shooting career-highs of 57.9% on twos and 41.2% from beyond the arc.</p><p>There’s no doubt Jones could help a contender on its quest for a championship. But the stiffer competition gets, the harder it is for teams to play a pair of small guards at the same time, the inevitable deficiencies those tandems present more readily exploited under the playoff pressure cooker.</p><p>Maxey and Jones wouldn’t have to play much together in the postseason, but that reality nevertheless helps explain why the Sixers have no interest in surrendering a first-round pick for the rock-solid ninth-year point guard. But if the Wizards are willing to part with him for multiple second-rounders, Jones would be a worthwhile short-term addition for Philadelphia given the team’s preference to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-early-free-agent-targets-james-harden-trade-monster-cap-space-potential" rel="noopener">maximize its financial flexibility</a> this summer.</p><p>Keep a close eye on rumors surrounding Jones as February 8th fast approaches. Poole is shooting just 39.2 percent from the field and 27.8 percent from behind the arc, both career lows since his rookie season. Poole is signed with Washington through the 2026-27 season after agreeing to a 4-year, $140 million rookie-scale extension with Golden State before being traded this offseason.</p><p>Poole is a naturally streaky scorer, and there may be some adjustments playing in a new system, for a new coach, with all new teammates. Poole has proven over the course of his career that he’s a capable scorer, but he may be pressing as the No. 1 option, which is something he never really was in Golden State with Stephen Curry around.</p><p>While the Wizards aren’t likely to turn it around as a team any time soon, Poole’s numbers should improve as the season carries on.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

It began by <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-a-hint-at-wizards-potential-2023-nba-draft-plans-after-bradley-beal-trade" rel="noopener">trading away Bradley Beal</a> to the Phoenix Suns. Then Kyle Kuzma <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/wizards-news-kyle-kuzma-turns-down-player-option-nba-free-agency" rel="noopener">declined his player option</a> and is a free agent.</p><p>On Wednesday, the Wizards traded Kristaps Porzingis to the Boston Celtics in a three-way trade involving the Memphis Grizzlies after a wild turn of events that also <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/wizards-news-washington-pg-situation-after-acquiring-tyus-jones-sparks-speculation-of-more-trades" rel="noopener">brought Tyus Jones to DC</a>. Now, the Wizards have a flurry of guards and no star player, especially with the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/suns-news-chris-paul-trade-talks-hit-overdrive-amid-phoenix-waive-rumors" rel="noopener">Chris Paul trade buzz circulating</a>.</p><p>But the Wizards are already looking to <a href="https://sports.yahoo.com/2023-nba-draft-how-the-memphis-boston-washington-deal-shifted-the-trade-market-145359265.html" rel="noopener">make more deals</a>, specifically at the point guard position, per Yahoo insider Jake Fischer.</p><p>‘The Wizards have already begun contacting opposing teams about trading Monte Morris, league sources told Yahoo Sports. Morris started at point guard alongside Bradley Beal last season after arriving from Denver in the 2022 offseason deal that brought Kentavious Caldwell-Pope to the champion Nuggets.’</p><p>Fischer also mentions that Paul could still be moved once the other trade is finalized with the Suns, although Jordan Goodwin and Isaiah Todd are expected to be moved in that package. As of now, Monte Morris looks like the one the Wizards are trying to move the most.</p><p>After coming over in a trade with the Denver Nuggets, Morris played in 62 games this past season, averaging 10.3 PPG with 5.3 assists in 27 minutes per game.
