But one thing’s for sure: this 76ers team won’t be anything like they were last year, injury problems notwithstanding. On Monday night, the 76ers scored their third consecutive win to begin the year, defeating the Orlando Magic, 136-124, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/76ers-news-joel-embiid-fed-up-minutes-restriction">despite being without Joel Embiid and Paul George</a>. Without those two veterans, the onus was on Tyrese Maxey to lead the way, and lead he did — finishing with 43 points and eight assists on 15-32 shooting from the field.</p><p>Maxey has been on a heater to begin the year, and he’s looking like the 76ers’ undisputed best player in the process. He’s averaging 37 points through the first three games of the campaign, and he’s playing as though he wants to erase the memories of their nightmare 2024-25 campaign completely.</p><p>And with burgeoning rookie <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/76ers-news-vj-edgecombe-shows-off-athleticism-paolo-banchero-chasedown-block">VJ Edgecombe coming into his own</a> this quickly alongside Maxey in the 76ers backcourt, there’s <a href="https://x.com/sixers/status/1982992432573931926" rel="noopener">no better star</a> in the NBA to mentor the third overall pick of the 2025 NBA Draft.</p><p>“Super fun guy to play with. It’s a must win every night [with Tyrese]. Got to go out there and win, man. He’s elite, man. He’s a real leader. Nonetheless, the squad adapted well enough to make big plays down the stretch to fend off any attempt at an upset on their homecourt.</p><p>Perimeter shooting and turnovers made the difference in this matchup. The 76ers prevailed in both categories as they made 14 3-pointers on a 42.4% clip while limiting their turnovers to six. It wasn’t the same for the Magic, only making eight triples on 32% accuracy and turning the ball over 13 times.</p><p>Four players scored in double-digits for Philadelphia, including Edgecombe. He finished with a stat line of 26 points, seven assists, four rebounds, a steal, and a block. He shot 10-of-17 from the field, including 2-of-4 from beyond the arc, and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. Tyrese Maxey had an excellent display with 43 points, eight assists, four rebounds, and a steal. Kelly Oubre Jr. came next with 25 points and 10 rebounds, while Quentin Grimes provided 14 points and five rebounds.</p><p>The 76ers will look forward to their next matchup, being on the road. I thought it right away.”</p><p>Standing 6-foot-5, 190 pounds, Edgecombe isn’t the most imposing player on the team, often looking slighter than fellow guards Tyrese Maxey and Quentin Grimes when the trio are on the court together. Tyrese Maxey led all scorers with 40 points in the win, but it was the 76ers’ rookie, VJ Edgecombe, who is drawing all of the attention.</p><p>Edgecombe finished the game with 34 points on an efficient 13-for-26 shooting. Incredibly, <a href="https://x.com/BrettSiegelNBA/status/1981181508619554976" rel="noopener">that is the third most points</a> in an NBA rookie debut in history. He trails only Wilt Chamberlain (43 points in 1959) and Frank Selvy (35 points in 1954) on the all-time list, per ClutchPoints reporter and NBA Insider Brett Siegel.</p><p>The Sixers’ rookie chipped in with seven rebounds, three assists, and a steal while knocking down five triples. It was quite the evening for the former Baylor Bear, who <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/76ers-news-vj-edgecombe-breaks-allen-iverson-franchise-record-rookie-debut">passed Allen Iverson with the most points in an NBA debut</a> wearing a Sixers uniform.</p><p>From a big picture perspective, Philly pulled off a huge win in the TD Garden. Entering the fourth quarter, the 76ers trailed the Celtics 86-75 and were down 13 in the final stanza. But Maxey took the game over in the fourth.</p><p>He opened the quarter by knocking down three consecutive three-pointers, cutting into the deficit. He finished with 15 in the quarter as the Sixers held a late lead.</p><p>Ironically, Edgecombe had the chance to put the hammer down. But he missed two crucial free throws with nine seconds remaining, opening the door for the Celtics to have a shot at a buzzer-beater.</p><p>But Payton Pritchard missed a runner and then a jumper in the final seconds, sealing the win for Philadelphia.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/philadelphia-76ers-2025-nba-draft-grades-every-pick">76ers selected Edgecombe with the third overall pick</a> in the 2025 NBA Draft. Well, you've come to the right place.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>After setting a new league <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/76ers-news-vj-edgecombe-rookie-history-lebron-james-couldnt-match">record for the most points scored by a rookie</a> in the first quarter of their NBA debut, VJ Edgecombe added another record to his rapidly growing resume, officially surpassing Allen Iverson to become the highest scoring debuting rookie in Philadelphia 76ers history.</p><p>Taking the court as the 76ers’ two guard, Edgecombe was widely expected to do a little bit of everything in his debut, including defending top wings like Jaylon Brown and score-happy guards like Derrick White, but few thought he’d challenge <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/76ers-news-celtics-backcourt-tyrese-maxey-1st-half">Tyrese Maxey for the most points scored</a> on the team, with the 21-year-old scoring 34 points in 42 minutes of action in Philadelphia’s <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/boxscore/_/gameId/401809936" rel="noopener">117-116 win</a> over the Celtics.</p><p>Widely considered the premier skywalker to enter the NBA in this year’s rookie class, Edgecombe’s biggest question mark heading into the season was his outside shot, with many considering that variable being the deciding factor between a good, great, or legendary rookie season. Though it’s only one game, that question appears to have been answered definitively, with the pride of Baylor knocking down five of his 13 outside shots as the team’s high-water outside shot chucker on the evening. Edgecombe was able to make his own shot, set up shots for his teammates, and, most crucially of all, looked like a legitimate weapon off the ball, where he spaced the floor like a grizzled veteran.</p><p>Goodness, Edgecombe even won the tipped ball against Payton Prichard near the end of regulation to get the 76ers the ball, which played a big role in the final outcome.</p><p>With Joel Embiid still getting his sea legs under him, having Edgecombe look like a legitimate starter regardless of age is a welcome development for 76ers fans indeed, as the team might just be able to shock some people if everything else can come together.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Even in the 80-year history of the NBA? This proved to be too much for Minnesota, being unable to keep up with their opponent’s hot shooting.</p><p>Perimeter shooting, rebounding and steals made the difference in this matchup. The 76ers knocked down 13 3-pointers on a 35.1% clip while securing 47 rebounds and making 15 steals. It wasn’t the same for the Timberwolves, who made 10 triples on an accuracy of 28.6% while finishing with 39 rebounds and nine steals.</p><p>Four players scored in double-digits on Philadelphia’s behalf, including Edgecombe and Embiid. The former finished with 26 points, six rebounds, five steals, and three assists. He shot 10-of-18 from the field, including 2-of-6 from downtown, and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. Embiid had 14 points and eight assists in his return from injury, while Tyrese Maxey led the team in scoring with 27 points and seven assists. Meanwhile, Quentin Grimes provided 22 points, five assists and three steals.</p><p>With their preseason over, the 76ers will prepare for their regular-season opener. The past few seasons haven’t gone well for the 76ers on the health front, and it has continued already into this new season. This time, it’s rookie VJ Eddgecombe, who is <a href="https://x.com/TimBontemps/status/1976703247558885478" rel="noopener">dealing with a hip injury</a>, according to ESPN’s Tim Bontemps.</p><p>“The Sixers say VJ Edgecombe won’t play tonight against Orlando with left hip soreness, but that he participated in shootaround and is expected to practice next week. Embiid, George, Lowry and McCain all will also sit out tonight’s game,” Bontemps wrote on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>It doesn’t sound like Edgecombe’s injury doesn’t sound serious, especially since he’s still participating in shootaround. With the regular season starting in the next few weeks, it will be important for the 76ers to be cautious with Edgecombe, regardless of what the injury is.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/76ers-news-jared-mccain-miss-start-of-season-thumb-surgery">76ers already have an injury to Jared McCain</a>, and it’s uncertain when he’ll be back on the court. As far as the backcourt, Tyrese Maxey will have to handle things at the guard position for now, and Kyle Lowry and Quentin Grimes will also help him if their depth is not where it needs to be.</p><h2><b>76ers already dealing with injuries before season</b></h2><p>The 76ers dealt with injuries all season, and the hope was that things would be better coming into this year. Already, McCain is set to miss the start of the season because of a thumb injury. He had already missed most of his rookie season last year because of a torn meniscus.</p><p>Joel Embiid missed most of last season with his recurring knee injury, and he is still working his way back to get on the court. Along with Paul George, head coach Nick Nurse says that both players are making progress to return from their injuries, and it will be interesting to see if either is ready for when the season starts.</p><p>The 76ers brought back most of their roster from last season, and the hope is that if they can stay relatively healthy, they can make the playoffs with the team they have. He joined ClutchPoints in 2023.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The Philadelphia 76ers are just two weeks away from kicking off their 2025-26 season with a road game against the Boston Celtics. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/76ers-news-eric-gordon-vows-mentor-vj-edgecombe-rookie-season">Philadelphia is hoping</a> that they will be able to shake off last year’s brutal showing, in which they missed the playoffs altogether, and re-insert themselves into the Eastern Conference hierarchy with a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/76ers-news-nick-nurse-encouraged-joel-embiid-health-compared-last-preseason">healthy Joel Embiid.</a></p><p>One of the main reasons for optimism around the 76ers is their young talent at the guard position, including VJ Edgecombe, whom the team drafted number three overall out of Baylor in June.</p><p>Some fans have been wondering whether or not Edgecombe <a href="https://x.com/KyleNeubeck/status/1975976654142046401" rel="noopener">will be a starter</a> on opening night, and on Wednesday, they (kind of) got their answer.</p><p>“Nick Nurse says starting a three guard lineup is ‘on the table,'” reported Kyle Neubeck of PHLY Sports on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>“(It also sounds more and more like (Tyrese) Maxey and VJ are going to be starting together regardless of the rest of the roster),” he added.</p><p>At this point, it’s unclear who would be the third guard slotted next to Maxey and Edgecombe in this lineup. It could be the newly re-signed Quentin Grimes, who went nuclear down the stretch of last season when the team was already out of contention. Or, Nurse will also eventually have last year’s rookie Jared McCain, who got off to a hot start to his NBA career before getting injured, at his disposal. Well, you've come to the right place.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>When the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/76ers-news-bring-back-veteran-eric-gordon-guerschon-yabusele-exit">Philadelphia 76ers re-signed Eric Gordon</a> in their pursuit of getting younger and more athletic, it turned heads around the City of Brotherly Love… at least until they ended up selecting <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/76ers-news-vj-edgecombe-emotional-draft-reaction-no-electricity-revelation">VJ Edgecombe with the third overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft</a>.</p><p>Now granted, Gordon isn’t quite <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/nba-news-kyle-lowry-draymond-green-amazon">Kyle Lowry, who has already accepted an analyst position</a> despite holding a 15-man roster spot on a professional sports team, but Gordon is about to enter his 18th season in the NBA and wasn’t exactly a high-usage player for the 76ers in 2024-25, even when his shooting was on point.</p><p>While Gordon still thinks he can help an NBA team win in 2025, he also acknowledged with reporters on Tuesday that his job is to <a href="https://x.com/PompeyOnSixers/status/1975648922556137962" rel="noopener">partially mentor young talent</a> like Edgecombe, whom he has already shared the court with on the Bahemian National team.</p><p>“At my age, in my phase of my career, you have to mentor. That’s without a doubt. I’ve been around VJ the most. I’ve known him for quite a while. Of course, I will be looking forward to not just helping him, but also all the young guys,” Gordon told Keith Pompey.</p><p>“But when I’m in the game, I’m going to have to do my part: Knock down shots, spread the floor, let guys operate the length [of the court] on their own. But when I’m out there, I’ve got to knock down shots, and I’ve got to look forward to making things happen.”</p><p>In 2024-25, Gordon had his worst statistical season as a pro, averaging just<a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/g/gordoer01.html" rel="noopener"> 6.8 points in 19.7 minutes of action a night</a> over just 39 games. Still, he shot 40.9 percent from deep, even if his defensive rating was tied for the worst of his career. He only played one season in college with the Baylor Bears, averaging 15 points and 5.6 rebounds per game after 33 appearances. He earned numerous honors as one of the best freshmen in the country, winning Big 12 Freshman of the Year.</p><p>Philadelphia likes his talent, selecting him with the third pick of the 2025 NBA Draft. They believe his athleticism and versatility would prove to be useful in many situations where they need him to be productive in.</p><p>The 76ers began their preseason on Thursday, facing the New York Knicks in Abu Dhabi, located in the United Arab Emirates. He shot 4-of-13 from the field, including 1-of-6 from beyond the arc, and 5-of-5 from the free-throw line.</p><p>Philadelphia was competitive with New York to start, being even at 25 apiece after the first quarter. However, they lost the scoring duel 56-32 in the second and third periods, which saw the contest get away from them even as the fourth quarter came around.</p><p>Three players scored in double-digits on Philadelphia’s behalf, including Edgecombe. Tyrese Maxey had a solid display with 14 points, four rebounds, four assists, one steal, and a block. He shot 5-of-12 overall and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. Kennedy Chandler had 10 points and two assists, while Jabari Walker provided nine points and five rebounds.</p><p>The 76ers will have one more preseason encounter with the Knicks, remaining in Abu Dhabi. After the game, head coach Nick Nurse shared <a href="https://x.com/ClutchPoints/status/1973834557611745709" rel="noopener">what he liked</a> about the rookie in his first preseason game.</p><p>“I really liked his defense, especially the first half,” Nurse said. “He’s a really good athlete, but he was really causing some havoc. He was able to get to the rim quickly, and he didn’t always take the shot when he got there.
