He joined ClutchPoints in 2023.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>One of the main <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/76ers-news-paul-george-reveals-knew-vj-edgecombe-pick-draft-night">beacons of hope for the Philadelphia 76ers</a> moving forward is rookie guard and former Baylor standout VJ Edgecombe, whom the team drafted third overall after lucking into that spot in the NBA lottery. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/76ers-news-vj-edgecombe-3-players-models-game">Edgecombe didn’t need much time</a> in the NBA Summer League to establish the fact that he’s ready to compete at the professional level.</p><p>Recently, Edgecombe wrote a heartfelt Players Tribune article about some of the adversity he’s overcome in his life and the people who have helped him along the way.</p><p>Edgecome also spoke on <a href="https://www.theplayerstribune.com/vj-edgecombe-nba-philadelphia-76ers-basketball" rel="noopener">his early experiences</a> in the City of Brotherly Love and what his plans are for this upcoming season.</p><p>“Now, I’ve gotten the chance to explore a little bit. I’ve had some Philly cheesesteaks. I’ve run up the Rocky Steps,” wrote Edgecombe. “I’m just getting comfortable and getting my bearings. But I’m really looking forward to earning your respect, and the respect of my teammates and coaches. I’m just trying to be a sponge and learn and absorb, and hopefully get better.”</p><p>Edgecombe has certainly checked every box that you’d want to see out of a young player so far since being drafted by the 76ers.</p><h2><b>An intriguing 76ers team</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/VJ-Edgecombe_955d0d.jpg"><figcaption>Bob Donnan-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>While most of the headlines still revolve around Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey, the 76ers now have two young guards (three if you count Maxey) in Jared McCain and VJ Edgecombe who appear to be future building blocks for the team.</p><p>McCain was having far and away the best rookie season of anyone in his class last year before he was sidelined due to injury, and Edgecombe certainly has the size, athleticism, and skill necessary to make an impact right away at the NBA level.</p><p>It will be interesting to see how 76ers head coach Nick Nurse chooses to juggle the rotations with these three guards, each of whom has a hybrid skillset somewhere in between a traditional point guard and a traditional shooting guard.</p><p>Whatever route they choose to go, the presence of these three certainly makes the failing health of Joel Embiid and the disastrous contract dished out to Paul George a bit easier to stomach for 76ers fans.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

At that spot, the 76ers <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/76ers-news-vj-edgecombe-reveals-bennedict-mathurins-blunt-warning-before-nba-leap">selected VJ Edgecombe</a>, the standout combo guard from Baylor who burst onto the NCAA scene a year ago.</p><p>It didn’t take long for Edgecombe to establish himself during the 76ers’ run at the Las Vegas Summer League, and recently, the rookie spoke on what NBA players he tries to <a href="https://x.com/ClutchPoints/status/1950259553444188433" rel="noopener">model his game after.</a></p><p>“[Victor Oladipo] when he was with the Pacers, [Dwyane Wade]… I watch a lot of [Anthony Edwards],” said Edgecombe, via Podcast P with Paul George, presented by Wave Sport + Entertainment.</p><p>If the 76ers are indeed getting a hybrid of Oladipo, Wade, and Edwards next year, they may perform well above the tepid expectations that most pundits have projected on them.</p><h2><b>An interesting time in Philadelphia</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Daryl-Morey-speaks-to-media.jpg"><figcaption>© Kyle Ross-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The 76ers currently figure to be in the twilight years of the Joel Embiid era. The big man has seen his well-chronicled injury concerns once again become a major issue of late, missing far more games than he played over the last two seasons.</p><p>Normally, such an event would be a death sentence for an organization, especially as the rest of the league–and potential trade partners–now seems privy to the fact that Embiid will likely never be the same player.</p><p>However, the 76ers are in the unique position of having three young combo guards in Edgecombe, Tyrese Maxey, and Jared McCain on their roster, each of whom figures to play a big role in 2025-26, and perhaps even bigger if Embiid or Paul George’s injuries once again manifest.</p><p>It will be interesting to see how 76ers head coach Nick Nurse opts to balance the minutes of the three young guards considering they all play the same position, but Philadelphia is certainly in a better position than most teams whose star player is a walking injury risk.</p><p>The 76ers will learn their 2025-26 schedule at some point in August.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Well, as it turns out, it’s true, as, in an appearance on <i>Podcast P with Paul George</i>, Edgecombe broke down how one particularly unusual interaction with Benedict Mathurin at Euro Camp has led to a <a href="https://Twitter.com/ClutchPoints/status/1949911116785864737" rel="noopener">rivalry between the two guards</a>.</p><p>“I was at Euro Camp. I won the MVP, or what’s not. After all that, Benedict Mathurin gonna come to me talking about, when you get to the league, I’m gonna bust you a**,” Edgecombe told his 76ers teammate.</p><p>“I’m telling you, he ain’t even say what’s up. He’s like, yeah, I’m gonna bust you a**. I’m like, d**n, where the love at?”</p><p>Ironically enough, Edgecombe was actually compared to Mathurin multiple times during the pre-draft process, with both players coming into the NBA as 6-foot-5 guards with electrifying athleticism but a developmental outside game from a shooting perspective. While Mathurin has remained a work in progress as a shooter in his third NBA season, making just 34.2 percent of his 3.9 attempts per game, he did <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/editorials/how-bennedict-mathurin-pacers-caught-thunder-by-surprise-game-3">swing a few playoff games for the Indiana Pacers</a> earlier this year, even if it didn’t stop the OKC Thunder’s march to the Larry O’Brien Trophy.</p><p>Fortunately for Edgecombe, if Mathurin does end up coming at him this fall, the rookie might actually have an edge on the former No. 6 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, as the Arizona product can really only score at the NBA level, recording a <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/m/mathube01.html" rel="noopener">negative DBPM</a> in all three of his professional seasons so far. Edgecombe, by contrast, is considered an NBA-ready defender, with a willingness to really get in the weeds and do what he needs to do on both ends of the court. Well, you've come to the right place.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Heading into the 2025 NBA Draft, fans had a pretty good idea of who the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/editorials/2025-nba-draft-big-board-5-0-76ers-final-ace-bailey-vj-edgecombe-decision">Philadelphia 76ers were going to draft with the third overall pick: VJ Edgecombe</a>.</p><p>Now sure, there was a time when it looked like Ace Bailey was “the guy” for Philadelphia, the third-best player in the class who played a position of need, but as the spring progressed, Bailey rose up the proverbial board, and the narrative flipped following his workout with the team.</p><p>But when did the 76ers players know they’d likely be sharing a locker room with the Baylor product this fall? Well, according to Paul George on his namesake podcast,<i> Podcast P presented by Wave Sports + Entertainment</i>, he knew <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/76ers-rumors-vj-edgecombe-nervous-private-workout-silver-lining">just after Edgecombe’s now-legendary workout</a>, as the 76ers <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?list=PLfpqj02tQor-DSumZ5zktaIJ2kjMhkfLN&amp;t=861&amp;v=gwzAdl8UFnM&amp;feature=youtu.be" rel="noopener">rapidly dropped their poker face</a> after watching the 19-year-old perform.</p><p>“I think I had just took off. When you came in because they, they reached out to us like we got VJ coming in to work out. I think it was on a Monday, right?” George asked his 76ers teammate.</p><p>“And uh, we took off and I was like, ‘D**n, like we just left.’ Like they just let me know and we just took off and by the end of the workout or by the end of that day, they was like, ‘We know who we’re taking.’ And that was before, you know, the Ace Bailey stuff was going around, and you know, him being linked to us. Um, and they felt strong at that point. They were like, ‘We know who we taking.’ Like VJ’s our guy. Great, great kid, works hard. You got the resume, the footage backs up everything. So, I knew early who we were going with.”</p><p>Whoa, did the 76ers give Edgecombe the controversial “draft promise,” guaranteeing that they could make him the No. 3 overall pick no matter what offers came their way? Nothing has surfaced to suggest that, and it seems rather unlikely the team would do so either way, considering Cooper Flagg and Dylan Harper were borderline locks to go No. 1 and No. 2 to the Mavericks and Spurs. Some people love it. I don’t. There were two centers. Two bigs sitting in the paint. I got to get to the cup,” Edgecombe said. “It was bad because I’m like, ‘Bro, I’ve got no space to operate.’ And then, you can sit in the paint. No three seconds, nothing. Then, in college, my coach, Drew, is a big analytics guy. No mid-ranges. So, I couldn’t shoot. Layups or threes. So it was hard for me. It’s probably why my percentage is a little low too, I ain’t going to lie.”</p><p>Edgecombe shot at a 43% clip from the floor, including 34% from deep in college. The <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45807536/2025-nba-draft-executives-debate-espn-poll-rookies-year-best-picks-summer-league" rel="noopener">rival GM clarified</a>, factoring in Embiid’s health, per ESPN’s Jeremy Woo.</p><p>“VJ might be Philly’s second-best player by the end of the season, factoring in [Joel] Embiid’s uncertain health,” said the general manager. “He’s that good and will thrive playing in Nick Nurse’s system.”</p><p>ESPN’s Tim MacMahon delivered his honest take on what he saw from Edgecombe.</p><p>“Edgecombe, you watch him, and he is just a wow athlete,” McMahon declared. “The turbo button, the leaping ability. Embiid has spent the majority of the last two seasons sidelined with injuries after his 2023 MVP campaign, but the 76ers did draft a future building block this offseason in<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/exclusive-dylan-harper-vj-edgecombe-kon-knueppel-nba-summer-league"> former Baylor standout VJ Edgecombe.</a></p><p>Edgecombe figures to inject some youth into a 76ers team that otherwise relies heavily on aging veterans like Embiid and Paul George.</p><p>Recently, an anonymous Eastern Conference general manager gave <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45807536/2025-nba-draft-executives-debate-espn-poll-rookies-year-best-picks-summer-league" rel="noopener">a bold prediction</a> for just how quickly Edgecombe could climb the 76ers’ ranks.</p><p>“VJ might be Philly’s second-best player by the end of the season, factoring in [Joel] Embiid’s uncertain health,” said the general manager, per Jeremy Woo of ESPN. “He’s that good and will thrive playing in Nick Nurse’s system.”</p><p>Woo also noted that the 76ers have a bit of a logjam at the guard position with Tyrese Maxey and Jared McCain, but that “Edgecombe’s potential to be a standout on both sides of the ball ultimately overrode those concerns,” and that “there’s plenty of optimism around the league surrounding his future.</p><h2><b>An exciting 76ers prospect</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Philadelphia-76ers-guard-VJ-Edgecombe.jpg"><figcaption>Candice Ward-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>VJ Edgecombe recently flashed the playmaking ability and athleticism that allowed him to be the number three overall pick during his stint with the 76ers’ Summer League team in Las Vegas.</p><p>As Woo mentioned, the 76ers have three combo guard-adjacent players on their roster in Edgecombe, Maxey, and McCain, who might have won the 2024-25 Rookie of the Year award had he not gone down with injury.</p><p>However, having too much talent is never a bad thing, and the 76ers will need all of the perimeter playmaking they can get due to Embiid’s shaky health and George’s own lengthy injury history and age.</p><p>It remains to be seen how big of a role Edgecombe will be given in Nick Nurse’s rotation at the start of the season, but it’s certainly within the realm of possibility that he works his way into being a key contributor for Philadelphia sooner rather than later.</p><p>The 76ers’ schedule for the 2025-26 season will be released in August.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Well, you've come to the right place.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Editorials</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>When it comes to thrills at Summer League per minute, few players came remotely close to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/76ers-news-vj-edgecombe-beats-cooper-flagg-halftime-skills-challenge">Philadelphia 76ers rookie guard VJ Edgecombe</a>.</p><p>Coming out of Baylor with a theatrical game built on big plays above the rim at both ends of the court, fans in Philadelphia knew they were getting a player who would occasionally earn highlight reel minutes on SportsCenter, not to mention all over social media, but how would his game translate to the NBA?</p><p>After spending a single season with the Bears, where he was the unquestioned top option, would he be able to embrace becoming a role player on a team with NBA Finals aspirations? And what about his defense? Edgecombe has widely been considered a plus defender coming out of college, with incredible athleticism and a long wingspan capable of locking down scorers bigger and smaller, but would that translate against professionals?</p><p>At Summer League, both the Utah and Las Vegas iterations, fans got their first look at what Edgecombe could do, and for the most part, the results were dazzling.</p><p>Taking part in just two games of action, fittingly joining the 76ers injury club with a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/76ers-news-philadelphia-drops-exciting-vj-edgecombe-update-summer-league-game">thumb contusion that limited</a> him to one game per league, Edgecombe still showcased his unique gifts at both ends of the court, averaging over 20 points per game while stuffing the stats sheet with impressive plays as a passer, rebounder, and pick pocket.</p><p>Edgecombe played smart basketball, focusing on helping the team win over his individual stats whenever possible, even if he could have been selfish in order to prop up his own production. Entering the summer with a goal of playing point guard and improving that aspect of his game, Edgecombe didn’t immediately transform himself into the second coming of Chris Paul but did showcase an ability to make the right basketball plays regardless of who had the ball, be that as a passer, cutter, or primary defender.</p><p>And yet, while Edgecombe shined in limited action during his Summer 76ers debut, that doesn’t mean his game was perfect. No, for all the good Edgecombe did, there’s one aspect of his game that could use some work, with his efficiency ultimately deciding his ceiling as a rookie: 3-point shooting.</p><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Philadelphia-76ers-rookie-VJ-Edgecombe.jpg"><figcaption>Zachary Taft-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><h2><b>VJ Edgecombe’s outside shot will define the 76ers’ season</b></h2><p>15.4%.</p><p>Between Utah and Vegas, VJ Edgecombe took 13 3-pointers, <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba-summer-league/boxscore/_/gameId/401782278/league/nba-summer-utah" rel="noopener">seven in his first game</a>, <a href="https://www.nba.com/2025-summer-league-vegas-player-stats?CF=GP*E*1&amp;dir=D&amp;sort=PLAYER_NAME" rel="noopener">six in his last</a>, but only made one shot in each contest, bringing his Summer League shooting total to a ghastly 15.4%.</p><p>Now granted, there are a few extenuating factors that could play into that number and may give fans a little more context before boldly declaring that the sky is falling.</p><p>For one, these were the first two games where Edgecombe played with NBA spacing, with the 3-point line in college almost two inches closer to the basket than the pro line. While that may not seem like a lot, for a shot that is as rhythm-based as a 3, where players know exactly how much mustard to put on the ball to get it where it needs to go, the transition can take time.</p><p>Furthermore, Edgecombe did suffer a thumb injury that cost him the final games of Utah Summer League and limited him to just one contest in Las Vegas. Shooting a basketball, especially from 3, required use of the thumb, with an injury potentially impacting that familiar motion. Fans saw firsthand how Edgecombe was hesitant to dunk the ball against the Bulls in Las Vegas, and that nagging injury almost certainly plays a role in outside shots, too.</p><p>With that in mind, Edgecombe wasn’t exactly an elite outside shooter in college, attempting just 4.6 shots per game with a completion percentage of 34. While Edgecombe did operate within an offense that forced him to do a ton in order to secure wins, limiting his opportunities to space the court off the ball, the fact that he’s at least taking more 3s per game than he averaged in college shows that he’s committed to improving his game with each passing contest, as opposed to being fully committed to playing basketball his way regardless of the situation.</p><p>In Summer League, Edgecombe once again found himself the focal point of both the Jazz and the Bulls when he took the court. Despite playing alongside proven NBA players like Justin Edwards and Adem Bona, Edgecombe was clearly the 76ers’ best player in both games, even if he struggled to get up his shot due to a thumb injury and was treated as such by opposing coaches.</p><p>When the regular season opens up in October, however, that will change, with Edgecombe thrust into a complementary role where his defense, passing, and rebounding will prove far more crucial than his ISO scoring. As a result, Edgecombe will have plenty more chances to take outside shots as an outlet option; how well he connects on these shots could go a long way in defining his rookie season and the 76ers’ 2025-26 campaign as a whole.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

All of Edgecombe’s pre-draft traits — elite athleticism and ability to finish above the rim while making instinctual plays on defense — have been on display, but he has showed off some other things too.</p><p>The biggest question about Edgecombe coming into the draft were about how he would be able to develop as a self-creator, and whether his handle would get to the point where he could create offense for himself and others. Well, you've come to the right place.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Though the sample size may be small, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/76ers-news-vj-edgecombe-joins-elite-club-victor-wembanyama-jayson-tatum">Philadelphia 76ers look like they got a good one in VJ Edgecombe</a>, the two-way guard they drafted third overall out of Baylor.</p><p>Entering the NBA with A+ athleticism and a sky-high ceiling, Edgecombe has flashed real star potential in his first – <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/76ers-news-vj-edgecombe-gets-unfortunate-injury-update-before-summer-league-hornets-clash">and to this point only</a> – Summer League appearance, scoring 28 points plus 10 boards while looking tailor-made for professional spacing following a one-and-done run in Waco.</p><p>One person who was thoroughly impressed by Edgecombe’s performance in Utah? Well, that would be his head coach, Nick Nurse.</p><p>Stopping by a special live episode of <i>The Hoop Collective</i> podcast at Las Vegas Summer League, Nurse celebrated what he’s seen from Edgecombe so far, noting that his athleticism, offense, and <a href="https://bleacherreport.com/articles/25225732-vj-edgecombe-hyped-incredible-76ers-nick-nurse-amid-nba-summer-league-2025" rel="noopener">especially his defense</a> should allow him to make an impact early on.</p><p>“Just a lot of everything. First of all, incredible athlete,” Nurse explained via Bleacher Report. “Does things defensively. Like, he’s good defensively, but he makes plays, shot-blocker, you don’t see that a lot from the wing position. Tries really hard on D. Explosive. Looked like he’s got some shimmy to get his own shot off. He’s a full-court player, getting up and down in transition. And then he’s an incredible person, he’s really all about working really hard. Super respectful, and he’s just great to be around.”</p><p>Standing 6-foot-5 with shoes on, Edgecombe isn’t exactly big for an NBA wing, even as (Thunder) players like Lu Dort, Alex Caruso, and Jalen Williams help to redefine the position heading into the future. With that being said, Edgecombe has long arms, incredible hops, and a seeming sixth sense for contesting shots in the air.
