On Monday night, the Magic kept a member of their starting lineup for the long haul after <a href="https://x.com/ShamsCharania/status/1843471418031272343" rel="noopener">coming to terms</a> to a three-year, $59 million extension with Wendell Carter Jr., per Shams Charania of ESPN.</p><p>Carter still had two years left on his existing deal; he was set to make a total of around $22.7 million until the 2025-26 season, but his new contract with the Magic now takes his total salary to $82 million over the next five seasons.</p><p>This was the maximum amount that Carter could have signed in a three-year extension with the Magic as per the CBA rules, and now, Orlando has its starting center under contract until his age-29 season.</p><p>However, there is a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/magic-news-wendell-carter-jr-suffers-concerning-leg-injury-preseason-vs-pelicans">bit of injury concern</a> surrounding Carter following the Magic’s latest preseason contest — a 106-104 defeat to the New Orleans Pelicans. In the third quarter, Carter appeared to roll his ankle after contesting a shot from Daniel Theis, and he crumbled to the ground shortly after feeling the impact.</p><p>If there is anything Carter has struggled with throughout his career, it’s staying healthy. He has missed at least 20 games in his six seasons thus far in the NBA, and over the past three campaigns, he has been absent for an average of 24 games. Given his shaky injury history, it was astute for him to secure a long-term deal with the Magic.</p><p>For the Magic, Carter is a valuable piece of the roster they’re building. From a skillset standpoint, Carter is the ideal frontcourt partner for Paolo Banchero. The 25-year-old big man’s biggest asset on offense is his ability to space the floor. Last season, he shot 37.4 percent from beyond the arc on 3.1 attempts per game, a major boon for the spacing of one of the lowest-volume three-point shooting teams in the NBA.</p><p>The Magic have emphasized skilled size in their roster-building philosophy, which makes Carter’s contract a bargain if he manages to stay healthy. That is a major if, however.</p><h2>Magic boast arguably the league’s best center rotation</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Orlando-Magic-center-Wendell-Carter-Jr.-34-dunks-the-ball-against-Los-Angeles-Lakers.jpg"></figure><p>When healthy, Wendell Carter Jr. figures to remain as the Magic’s starting center. He may not be the flashiest starting center in the NBA, but he is as good of a complement the Magic have on their roster to their more ball-dominant forwards in Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner. Even then, there is no pressure for the Magic to rush Carter back after his latest ankle injury, as Orlando boasts arguably the league’s best center rotation.</p><p>Behind Carter in the rotation are two centers who can make a case for a larger role elsewhere. Moe Wagner and Goga Bitadze can do more than just <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/magic-biggest-mistake-in-2024-nba-free-agency">hold down the fort for the Magic</a>, and they have them under contract for multiple seasons. The Magic also have the roster versatility to trout out Banchero or Jonathan Isaac at the five if the need to do so ever arises.</p><p>The best part of this is that the Magic’s centers each provide a different dimension to the team whenever they’re on the court. Carter is a floor-spacer, Wagner has evolved into more than a hustle guy who gets under the opponents’ skin (he is a dangerous roll-man who can make the occasional three-ball), while Bitadze is the best rim-protecting option among the three.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

After contesting a midrange jump shot from Pelicans new addition Daniel Theis, Carter came down awkwardly and appeared to twist his ankle on the Pelicans big man’s foot.</p><p>Carter went down to the ground in obvious pain and rolled over to his back before being helped to his feet and off the court. It is worth noting that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/magic-news-get-tough-wendell-carter-jr-injury-update-after-playoff-exit">Carter underwent hand surgery</a> once the team was eliminated from the playoffs.</p><p>In a total of 196 regular-season games with Orlando since joining the organization during the 2020-21 season, Carter has averaged 13.6 points and 8.8 rebounds per game while shooting 52.2 percent from the floor. Although numerous teams have inquired about his trade availability through the years, the Magic have been unwilling to deal the former seventh-overall pick.</p><p>Despite his scoring and productivity taking a hit last season due to injuries, Carter still managed to shoot 37.4 percent from three-point range, showcasing his versatility on the offensive side of the basketball.</p><p>The 2023-24 season proved to be one of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/magic-news-paolo-banchero-franz-wagners-awesome-takes-on-historic-playoff-feat-with-jalen-suggs">best years the Magic have had in quite some time</a>. However, the team unfortunately lost their first-round matchup to the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/magic-news-cavs-donovan-mitchell-issues-paolo-banchero-warning-nba-after-playoff-battle">Cleveland Cavaliers in seven games</a>. To make matters worse, the Magic received a tough Wendell Carter Jr. injury update after the postseason.</p><p>Carter <a href="https://www.orlandosentinel.com/2024/05/11/orlando-magic-wendell-carter-jr-goga-bitadze-moe-wagner-left-hand-surgery-nba-playoffs-jamahl-mosley/" rel="noopener">will undergo surgery</a> to stabilize the third metacarpal in his left non-shooting hand, per the Orlando Sentinel. He originally suffered a fractured left hand on Nov. 2 against the Utah Jazz and had surgery that resulted in 20 missed games.</p><p>The 25-year-old is expected to make a full recovery and will be re-evaluated roughly four weeks after the procedure. Hopefully, Carter will be able to maintain his production as a key piece of the Magic core.</p><p>Wendell Carter Jr. joined the Magic via trade from the Chicago Bulls during the 2020-21 season. Since then, he has provided Orlando with great help on both sides of the ball. After his first 22-game stint with the team, Carter leapt to 15.0 points and a career-high 10.5 rebounds per game in 2021-22.</p><p>He followed the year up with a career-best 15.2 points to go with 8.7 rebounds in 2022-23. Carter’s injury woes saw him play just 55 games in 2023-24. Yet, he averaged a respectable 11.0 points, 6.9 rebounds, and shot a career-high 37.4 percent on three-pointers. His floor-stretching and interior presence helped the Magic ascend for an honorable run in the 2024 NBA Playoffs.</p><p>Orlando took on a fiery Cavaliers team in their Eastern Conference quarterfinal and nearly won the series. However, Donovan Mitchell and company increased their intensity late in Game 7 to advance to the next round.</p><p>On the bright side, Wendell Carter Jr.’s injury hiatus will occur early in the offseason, so he should eventually be able to keep building alongside his talented teammates for another deep run in 2025.</p><h2><b>Magic have a bright outlook for 2024-25</b></h2><p>Orlando received standout contributions from several players during the 2023-24 season. For starters, Paolo Banchero took an incredible leap in his second year. Banchero averaged a team-best 22.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game. As a result, he earned his first All-Star appearance.</p><p>Banchero notably improved in several statistical categories including three-point shooting percentage, assists, and field goal percentage. The 22-year-old has a high ceiling, and if he continues to improve, Orlando will have a good chance to keep rising in the Eastern Conference standings.</p><p>Banchero’s success does not come on its own. Several other Magic contributors have stepped their game up. In his third year, Franz Wagner was Orlando’s second-leading regular season scorer with a career-high 19.7 points per game. His three-point percentage took a dip but he made up for it with increases in assists and rebounds.</p><p>Wagner gives Orlando an upper hand with his all-around scoring ability.</p><p>Of course, the Magic would not be successful without a good defensive effort, and that is where Jalen Suggs comes in. Suggs was arguably one of the NBA’s best perimeter defenders in 2023-24. He tallied 1.4 steals per game and did a serviceable job taking on challenging matchups.</p><p>Suggs’ defensive ability showed during the Cavaliers series when stayed close to Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland, making it tough for the stars to score. Suggs will be an integral part of Orlando’s attack going forward.</p><p>All in all, the Magic have a bright outlook for the 2024-25 season and beyond. Paolo Banchero’s squad is facing the Cleveland Cavaliers and hopes to extend their entries in the win column. However, things did not go as expected for the Orlando Magic in their first game back. Jalen Suggs went down after a devastating play with Wendell Carter Jr. Now, his status is uncertain for the remainder of this clash against the Cavs.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/magic-news-jalen-suggs-extremely-rare-franchise-feat" rel="noopener">Jalen Suggs was quickly</a> assisted to the locker room for further evaluation. His collision with Wendell Carter Jr. saw him get hit with an elbow which could mean a head injury or that he enters concussion protocol. The Magic have not yet released a statement or update about his possible return <a href="https://twitter.com/FawzanAmer_/status/1760839195885518891" rel="noopener">to the game</a>, per Fawzan Amer of The Sixth Man Show.</p><p>Before getting unintentionally struck, Suggs played 18 minutes for the Magic. He notched seven points while dropping three assists and grabbing a rebound. Anthony Black was fielded out in hopes of replicating his playmaking and defensive prowess.</p><p>UPDATE: Suggs <a href="https://twitter.com/Underdog__NBA/status/1760845274123993304" rel="noopener">returned to the bench</a> at the beginning of the fourth quarter.</p><h2><b>Magic vs. Cavs so far</b></h2><p>So far, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/magic-news-jalen-suggs-mental-health" rel="noopener">Magic have been holding</a> their own against the Cavs. Carter is leading them in scoring by knocking down six out of his eight shots which netted him 14 points. Paolo Banchero is also putting up an all-around performance. On 27 minutes of action, he has recorded nine points along with four assists and six rebounds. Franz Wagner is also a player for the Magic who is erupting. He has 12 points alongside three rebounds and assists.</p><p>The main problem for the Magic so far in this game is their shot efficiency. They got 61 attempts at the moment but only knocked down 29 of them. Their saving grace is that they have knocked down 50% of their 20 shots from outside.</p><p>Other than that, their defense is looking alive and well. They have forced the Cavs to 12 turnovers in the game. six of those came from steals. The Magic’s rim protection is also serviceable with two blocks so far. A drawback is the foul trouble they are about to be in. They currently have 16 fouls which is not good for a team that just lost a player to a possible injury. Dallas was one of the teams to show interest in Orlando’s Wendell Carter as well, sources said, although the Magic aren’t looking to move him either.”</p><p>Center depth is indeed an area of concern on the Mavericks’ roster as currently constructed. The Mavericks and Magic exchanged blows in the fourth quarter in a teeter-totter affair that ended in a 131-129 win for Dallas, but that exchange became literal deep in the final frame when Wendell Carter Jr. inadvertently hit Dereck Lively II in the face with a little over two minutes remaining in the game.</p><p>Immediately, Lively went down to the ground in pain, clearly reeling from the forearm he took from Carter. Hate seeing players hurt, especially when it was my fault,” Carter wrote.</p><p>In the end, Dereck Lively II may have taken a painful shot to the face, but it <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-news-dereck-lively-ii-tyson-chandler-kings-mike-brown" rel="noopener">benefitted the Mavericks’ efforts</a> to seal the victory in crunch time. The rookie big man made two of his four free throws from the Wendell Carter Jr. incident, giving Dallas the lead for good after Tim Hardaway Jr. added two more points on the ensuing possession.</p><p>Physical contact is simply part of the NBA, and even though Carter did not intentionally swing at Lively’s face, the flagrant foul was warranted. Carter, Jr. has teamed up with Banchero and FIBA Gold Medalist Franz Wagner to form an intimidating and productive front line for Orlando in the early-going.</p><h2>Magic Battling Lakers in Saturday Night Showdown</h2><p>The Magic led the Lakers by three early on in the first quarter of their game against the Los Angeles Lakers Saturday night.</p><p>Wagner kicked off the evening with seven points as the Magic battled the preseason Western Conference contenders. LeBron James, Austin Reaves, Anthony Davis and other Lakers stars were among those who took the court.</p><p>Wagner showed off his high basketball IQ on the fast break against Darvin Ham’s team in the Magic Kingdom. Head coach Jamahl Mosley is hoping for the best after both players are evaluated by the medical staff. But the same positive spin cannot be applied to Carter, who is likely to miss a decent chunk of time.</p><p>The big man out of Duke has been plagued by injuries his whole NBA career, playing 60 games or more only once in his five seasons. He finished with a game-high 18 points after he caught fire from beyond the arc, nailing four of his five three-point attempts for a rock-solid +14 on the night.</p><p>A career 32.1 percent shooter from deep who shot 35.6 percent last season Carter isn’t exactly the best of snipers from three. But Carter has worked so hard on his outside shooting, and <a href="https://twitter.com/Dan_Savage/status/1711944605015409103" rel="noopener">he’s glad</a> that his Magic teammates are finding him in spots where he can put that improved three-ball stroke to good use.</p><p>“It feels good, cause you put in all the work and then you go into a game and sometimes you have off nights and sometimes you have on nights like I did tonight. It feels good for the first game to be an on night for me and for my teammates to find me,” the Magic center said, per Dan Savage of NBA.com. “I give a lot of credit to my teammates trusting in me for taking those shots and pushing me to take those shots, miss or make. With me being able to shoot more and more, it just opens up more space for them to get into the paint and make more plays,” Carter added.</p><p>For the Magic’s sake, they’ll be hoping that Carter becomes a much more consistent weapon from three during the 2023-24 season. The Magic have won seven of their last eight games, with their only loss the result of some <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/magic-news-paolo-banchero-receives-strong-message-from-markelle-fultz-after-crunch-time-blunders" rel="noopener">inexplicable crunch-time blunders</a>. That stretch includes two victories against the then-Eastern Conference leaders Boston Celtics, as well. Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner have done an incredible job holding down the fort, but it’s about to get better for the Magic with the impending return of starting center Wendell Carter Jr.</p><p>Carter, who has missed the past 17 games with a foot injury, is <a href="https://twitter.com/khobi_price/status/1606317848397316096" rel="noopener">set to make his return</a> on Friday night against the San Antonio Spurs, per Khobi Price of the Orlando Sentinel.</p><p>Wendell Carter Jr. last suited up for the Magic on November 18, when they took on his former team, the Chicago Bulls. Carter had 21 points and eight rebounds that night as the Magic took the game off a Jalen Suggs game-winner.</p><p>In his absence, the Magic have turned to a combination of Mo Bamba and Moe Wagner to fill the void he left. During their recent winning streak, the older Wagner brother has done an admirable job in filling in Carter’s shoes. <a href="https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask?q=moritz+wagner+stats+as+starter+22-23" rel="noopener">In 11 games as a starter</a>, Moe Wagner has tallied 14.4 points and 7.4 boards on 51 percent shooting. He would presumably move to the bench with Carter’s return from injury.</p><p>Before Wendell Carter Jr.’s injury, he was playing the best basketball of his career. In 15 games played, Carter is averaging 16.6 points, 9.1 boards, and 3.3 dimes on 51.5 percent shooting from the field. The fact that he couldn’t leave the court under his own power only added to those thoughts. Carter is in the midst of a breakout season for the Magic and was just signed to a four-year, $50 million fully guaranteed contract extension two months ago.</p><p>On the year, Carter is averaging thirteen points and ten rebounds per night while also hitting 50 percent of his field goals and 35 percent of his threes. Orlando will have a big hole to fill on their roster if Carter does indeed have a major knee injury. The Magic are already one of the worst teams in the entire <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-steve-kerr-gets-brutally-honest-on-nba-covid-19-outbreak/">NBA</a> at 5-24 and are going to be forced to play an even younger team than the one they currently field.</p><p>Who knows? Paul Pierce infamously left in a wheelchair and then came back in the same game…but this doesn’t seem like that kind of situation at all. Carter seemed to be in a great deal of pain and in this day and age of social media, the Magic team doctors were surely using the wheelchair as a means of last resort to protect Carter from speculation. The fact that they couldn’t get him off the court without it is a very telling sign. Prayers up for Wendell.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The Bulls raced out to a double-digit lead in the second quarter and never looked back as they won handily, 123-88.</p><p>But the trip to Orlando was a homecoming for longtime Magic star Nikola Vucevic, who <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bulls-news-nikola-vucevic-reveals-true-feelings-toward-orlando-amid-return/">starred as their best player</a> for eight plus seasons before being traded for a package which included a big man swap for Wendell Carter Jr.</p><p>Carter was the lone bright spot for the Magic against the Bulls, posting 26 points, 10 rebounds, and two blocks while shooting 8-for-15 from the field.
