He emerged as a key rotational player for head coach Mike Budenholzer as the campaign progressed, which included starting in each of the team’s playoff games.</p><p>On the other hand, Carter signed with the Bucks in February after being waived by the Brooklyn Nets. The versatile point guard featured in all but one of the Bucks’ playoff contests this year, and he also ended up exerting a keen impact on the defensive side of the ball.</p><p>From Bucks general manager Jon Horst’s standpoint, he much <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bucks-news-gm-jon-horst-speaks-out-on-wesley-matthews-future-ahead-of-free-agency/" rel="noopener">aspired</a> to see Matthews and Carter stay put in Milwaukee. For one, he noted earlier this month that he hoped to “figure something out when the time’s right” in regard to Matthews’ future with the team. Among them, Wesley Matthews is set to once again hit free agency.</p><p>Matthews signed with the Bucks in December, and he went on to feature in 49 games over the remainder of the regular season. He ended up emerging as a vital role player for Bucks head coach Mike Budenholzer, starting in each of the team’s playoff games in the campaign.</p><p>Bucks general manager Jon Horst took <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEEjXVMhckg" rel="noopener">some time</a> on Friday to answer questions about the team heading into the 2022 NBA Draft. When asked on whether he would entertain the idea of re-signing Matthews, Horst left the door open to this option.</p><blockquote>“I think if we have an opportunity to have him back, and I know that he’s expressed that that’s something he would like to do,” Horst said. “Hopefully we can figure something out when the time’s right.”</blockquote><p>Matthews did <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2yqJYwU03s" rel="noopener">note</a> in his exit interview that he is “hoping to be back” in Milwaukee, although it is currently not known as to whether the two sides engaged in such talks during the season.</p><p>Overall, Horst was simply a fan of what Matthews brought to the team, as the veteran guard took on multiple responsibilities during his half-season return to Milwaukee.</p><blockquote>“At the end of the day, we picked up Wes sometime in December,” Horst said. “He ended up starting for us in the playoffs and gave more to this team in terms of blood, sweat, and tears.“An ultimate competitor, an ultimate teammate. Last season, he played for the Los Angeles Lakers but hasn’t been on a team to start the season.</p><p>The Bucks have had some unfortunate injuries early on, including Brook Lopez, who just had back surgery. Milwaukee decided to bring in DeMarcus Cousins to help fill that role while Brook recovers from his surgery. Any of the added depth that can help this Bucks team is much needed, they saw a season ago if they want to win an NBA title like they did last year, they need to be healthy.</p><p>When Matthews was in Milwaukee, he found a good amount of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bucks-news-milwaukee-signs-veteran-sharpshooter-wesley-matthews/">success</a>. He shot the three-pointer at over a 36% rate, and also played high-level defense. If he can continue to do what he did for the Bucks as he did back in the 2019-20 season, he will be a serviceable ninth or tenth man off the bench for this team.</p><p>Let’s take a look at four reasons why the Bucks made a good decision on re-signing Wesley Matthews.</p><h2>Why It Was Smart That The Bucks Added Wesley Matthews</h2><p><b>4. He adds depth to the bench unit</b></p><p>If the Milwaukee Bucks want to win another NBA title this season, they need their three stars healthy. Giannis, Khris Middleton, and Jrue Holiday have all missed time for injury purposes or COVID-19.</p><p>Wesley Matthews isn’t somebody who’s going to be a starter like he was two seasons ago for this team, but if he can continue being serviceable like he has throughout his entire career, he can eat up bench minutes and allow some nights off for other guys. Milwaukee will already have arguably the deepest bench in the NBA when everybody is healthy. The bench unit of George Hill, Bobby Portis, Pat Connaughton, possibly Donte DiVincenzo when he returns from injury if they decide not to start him, and either Semi Ojeleye or Matthews, would be an incredible bench to roll out for five to 10 minutes a night in the playoffs.</p><p>This was a great move because they can have another serviceable bench piece that can eat up minutes and still be positive when on the floor against other bench units. There is a chance that he doesn’t even get playoff minutes, but if he does, he adds some depth and will help this team out.</p><p><b>3. If he doesn’t pan out, they lost a second-round pick</b></p><p>The Bucks decided to waive their former second-round pick of this past year’s NBA draft, Georgios Kalaitzakis. There was likely no chance that he was going to ever be somebody who the Bucks were going to give serviceable minutes. If this move does not pan out the way that they like it with Wes, it doesn’t hurt this team too much, if any at all.</p><p><b>2. Maybe he can be the PJ Tucker of this year’s team?</b></p><p>Wesley is a bit older in his career and last season with the Lakers, he didn’t look great. In Milwaukee, he did play some of the best basketball of his career and that could be contributed to playing alongside a guy like Giannis who makes his teammates better than arguably anybody in the league. This could be a good sign for the Bucks because if he can continue playing at the level that he did in Milwaukee, he will be a more than serviceable defender who can get stops against some of the best players in the NBA.</p><p>It is inevitable that the Bucks are going to have to take on the Brooklyn Nets and arguably the greatest scorer of all-time in Kevin Durant. PJ Tucker was the man who made it tough on KD a season ago, and Milwaukee needs somebody who could do the same thing.</p><p>They will probably throw Khris, Giannis, and Jrue at Durant but it’s not an easy task, and it takes a lot of effort to contain him. There have to be guys who can be thrown at him for five to seven minutes a night and that’s exactly what Wesley Matthews could possibly do for this team.</p><p><b>1. He can still shoot at a decent to above-average rate</b></p><p>If he can continue shooting at a 36% rate or higher, this is a perfect pick-up for the Bucks. Milwaukee loves to shoot the 3-point shot and when you play next to Giannis, you’re always going to get more open looks than with any other guy in the NBA. Perhaps he could even get some big minutes come playoff time if he does shoot the three-point shot at that high of a rate.</p><p>This isn’t exactly a huge move for the Bucks, but it’s bigger than just the signing. If he could be somebody who could play 15-plus minutes a night in the regular season and help keep the workload off of their three big stars, then this move is 100% what needed to happen.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Kalaitzakis featured in nine games for the Bucks, averaging 1.8 points and 0.9 rebounds across 5.3 minutes of run per night.</p><p>The Bucks already rank third in the NBA with 14.3 threes per game, and adding Matthews to the arsenal of sharpshooters featuring Grayson Allen, Pat Connaughton, Khris Middleton, Bobby Portis, and Brook Lopez, among others, will only stand to improve that tally.</p><p>Matthews, a 12-year veteran, has knocked down 1,729 threes in his career, converting at a 37.9% clip from deep. Last season in LA, Matthews averaged 4.8 points per game, including 1.1 threes, while serving as a role player for the Lakers.</p><p>This will be Matthews’ second stint with Milwaukee. The 35-year-old San Antonio native spent the 2019-20 season with the Bucks, playing a sizable role in the rotation. Across 67 games, Matthews averaged 7.4 points and 1.6 threes over 24.4 minutes per night. He likely won’t be called upon for as many minutes as he was a couple of years ago, but he’s familiar with the team and could provide value off the bench, particularly with his ability to knock down shots from beyond the arch.</p><p>Matthews went undrafted out of Marquette before latching on with the Utah Jazz in 2009. He then joined the Portland Trail Blazers from 2010-15, before signing on with the Dallas Mavericks. The veteran point guard has suffered a shoulder injury in Game 1 of the series, and he was really ineffective after that when the Lakers won two straight games to take a 2-1 lead.</p><p>In Game 4, Paul fought through the pain and led his Suns to tie the series against the Purple and Gold. Considering that the playoffs showdown could go down to who stays healthy, Phoenix really needs to protect CP3 and keep him as healthy as possible.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

However, he showed that he can still be a valuable player for the Lakers after successfully making an impact against OKC.</p><p>Without Davis, who is nursing his Achilles injury, the Lakers were threatened by a resilient Thunder squad in a back-and-forth encounter. It even looked like OKC was going to pull out the win at one point late in the fourth quarter. The defending champs needed Matthews’ contributions in a big way, and he delivered with 16 points on 4-of-5 shots from beyond the arc in 26 minutes.</p><p>LeBron was his usual self with a triple-double performance of 28 points, 14 rebounds, and 12 assists. The Lakers star played big minutes in each of the last two games, showing why he’s so important.</p><p>With the narrow victory, the Lakers improved to 19-6 for the second spot in the Western Conference. Therefore, Matthews was immediately on their radar and there was mutual interest for the veteran shooting guard.</p><p>Signing with Los Angeles was something that was a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/wesley-matthews-ties-to-lakers-go-back-to-the-day-he-was-born/">full-circle moment</a> for Matthews. His father, Wesley Matthews Sr., played for the Lakers in the 1980s with Magic Johnson and other Hall of Fame players.</p><p>Just a season ago, Matthews spent the year with the Milwaukee Bucks, seeing a career-low 24.4 minutes per game. He still shot a modest 36.4 percent from the 3-point range, proving he can still space the floor.</p><p>At the same time, even at 34 years old, Matthews can still be a defensive stalwart for a contending team. His words clearly had a resounding impact on Matthews, and still do to this day. In fact, it would seem Bryant’s forewarnings were the precursor to Matthew’s stunning comeback.</p><p>An Achilles injury can sometimes take up to 12 months—or longer—to fully heal. But while Matthews suffered the injury in March, he was back on the court in late October. It was a stunning turnaround that speaks to Matthews’ dogged commitment to the process. Moreover, the former Marquette product still managed to play at a high level.</p><p>Things have changed for Matthews in recent years. He is no longer relied upon as another scoring option, but rather a physical defender who can also space the floor with his ability to shoot from the perimeter. Though they weren’t swapped for one another, Matthews will still be seen as Green’s replacement as the Lakers’ veteran swingman. While the two are more different than similar, it’s necessary to compare the two to see how Matthews will fill in the spot left by Green.</p><p>Here are three bold predictions for Wesley Matthews in his first season with the Lakers.</p><h2><b>3. Matthews back to double-digit points average</b></h2><p>Last year, in his lone season with the Milwaukee Bucks, Wesley Matthews averaged a career-low in points with <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/m/matthwe02.html">7.5 a game</a>. He also made just 1.6 3-pointers, the lowest since his second year in the league when he knocked down 1.9 3-pointers per contest. While some may see this as a decline in Matthews’ game, one also has to consider the role he played with the Bucks to get the full picture.</p><p>Yes, Matthews was a designated 3-pointer for the Bucks. His main role was to space-out the floor to allow Giannis Antetokounmpo to pummel the defense. And if the opposing team collapses on the Greek Freak, the ideal scenario would be for Antetokounmpo to kick it out to Matthews and swish — an automatic 3-pointer. However, Matthews attempted just 4.4 3-pointers last season — his second career-low.</p><p>The main difference is pretty obvious: the Bucks don’t have LeBron James, arguably one of the greatest passers that the NBA has ever seen. James’ former and current teammates have said it time and time again: if you’re open, you better be ready to shoot. That’s because James will always find you.</p><p>As such, there’s a good chance that Matthews will be back to his career average of 13.1 points per game. He will also be back to knocking down at least two 3-pointers per contest. Most of it will be coming from the short corners where he shot an elite 42.3 percent clip last season.</p><h2><b>2. An uptick in LeBron James’ assists in the playoffs</b></h2><p>In the 2019-20 regular season, LeBron James led the league in assists for the first time in his career with <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/j/jamesle01.html">10.2 per game</a>. Close to 30 percent of James’ dishes went to Anthony Davis. In the playoffs, James dished out 8.8 assists per game. This dip was expected since defenses are much more sophisticated come playoff time.</p><p>Statistically, Danny Green is the better shooter with a career clip of 40 percent from deep as opposed to Matthews’ 38.1 percent. But as Lakers’ fans saw in the playoffs, Green struggled with just a 33.9 percent clip from deep. Even with tighter defenses, Green was still presented with lots of open opportunities to swish those 3-pointers.</p><p>As for Matthews, he shot at a decent 39.5 percent from 3-point country. Of course, Green played many more games and took many more shots since the Lakers made it all the way to the NBA Finals. But Matthews’ higher shooting percentage suggests that he made the most with the opportunities he was given, which, compared to Green, was minuscule.</p><p>And James, who’s now the primary playmaker with Rondo out, will find Matthews camping on the short corners more often than not. And there’s a very good possibility that James’ assists numbers will experience a little uptick, if not fall within the 8-9 band in the playoffs.</p><h2><b>1. Early struggles on defense</b></h2><p>To be fair with Green, he mightily made up for his struggles on offense by being a consistent contributor on the defensive end of the floor.</p><p>A member of the 2017 All-NBA Defensive Second Team, Green had a defensive rating of 101.8 in the NBA Finals which led the team. He also had a net rating of 15.8 in the playoffs which also led the Lakers. In the regular season, he had a defensive rating of <a href="https://www.foxsports.com/nba/los-angeles-lakers-team-stats?category=advanced&amp;season=2019&amp;seasonType=reg">114.1</a>, which makes him one of the best defenders on the team.</p><p>Matthews doesn’t have such numbers to boast. In fact, the Bucks’ defensive rating plummeted to 104.1 from 98.3 when Matthews was on the floor. While analysts have tagged Matthews as a 3-and-D player, he’s not actually a stellar defender like Green. As such, Lakers fans should expect a rather weak defensive stance from the 34-year-old. But given that Frank Vogel is a defense-first type of coach, Matthews will likely catch up to speed.</p><p>While it’s unlikely that he’ll make a defensive impact like Green, expect Matthews to improve as the season progresses.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Through 67 games, the Marquette University product put up 7.4 points while shooting a 36 percent clip from deep, a far cry from his usual numbers in previous seasons.</p><p>The Bucks were thought of to not be in the market to bring back Matthews given their priorities that needed addressing coming into the offseason. They recently traded for Jrue Holiday, which made them favored to go in a different direction than that of the supporting cast of last season. Milwaukee is in the process of trying to convince reigning MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo to sign the super-max extension they’re expected to offer on Friday.</p><p>For Matthews, he joins the Lakers as a prototypical 3-and-D player that can fill a void off the bench that’ll be left in the absence of Danny Green. The 34-year-old knockdown shooter left a rather modest $2.7 million on the table, which isn’t surprising considering he could earn more and wind up with a contender of his own choosing.</p><p>Matthews, after all, will have no shortage of suitors looking to avail his 3-and-D expertise. After four seasons with the Dallas Mavericks, Matthews bounced around three teams in the Eastern Conference in the last two years. <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/m/matthwe02.html" rel="noopener noreferrer">The 6-foot-4 guard notched</a> 7.4 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game last season, all the while shooting 39.6 percent from the field and 36.4 percent from downtown in 67 games as a starter for Milwaukee.</p><p>While those numbers aren’t exactly noteworthy, Matthews is the type of role player needed by championship-seeking teams thanks to his ability to stretch the floor and play hard-nosed defense.</p><p>The Bucks would surely like to bring the veteran back in the fold, But if he truly wants to go elsewhere, let’s have a look at three of the best landing spots for Wesley Mathews when free agency officially opens on Nov. 20.</p><h2><b>Los Angeles Lakers</b></h2><p>The Lakers already had an interest in Wesley Matthews since last summer before he agreed to sign with the Bucks. Now that he is a free man again, the Lakers have once again emerged as a top destination for the two-way guard. The reigning NBA champions jumped the gun early with their offseason movement, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-news-dennis-schroder-traded-la-days-after-claiming-he-didnt-want-to-go-there/" rel="noopener noreferrer">acquiring Dennis Schroder</a> from the Oklahoma City Thunder, in large part due to the expected departure of Rajon Rondo in free agency.</p><p>Matthews, meanwhile, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rumor-lakers-want-to-sign-wesley-matthews-to-replace-danny-green-after-dennis-schroder-trade/" rel="noopener noreferrer">would be an ideal replacement</a> for Danny Green, who’s set to go to the Thunder in the Schroder trade. Matthews would bring a similar game to Los Angeles, but at a much more reasonable price. Plus, Matthews is likely looking to hop aboard another strong title contender if he decides to leave Milwaukee.</p><p>The Lakers still have one of the strongest cases for a repeat next season, and Matthews would be wise to accept their invitation this time around.</p><h2><b>Brooklyn Nets</b></h2><p>Speaking of contenders, Wesley Matthews could actually stay put in the East and join another star-studded team if he elects to sign with Brooklyn. With Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant attracting all the defensive attention in the world, Matthews would have a field day with all those open 3-pointers while playing for a new head coach in Steve Nash.</p><p>With Irving not being the strongest defender in the world, the Nets would lean on Matthews to defend the opposing team’s best backcourt player. A potential blockbuster trade for James Harden would obviously shake up the Nets’ roster, but Matthews would be a valuable addition no matter what happens on that front. His skill set is perfect for complementing star players.</p><h2><b>Philadelphia 76ers</b></h2><p>The Sixers would also be a good choice for Wesley Matthews. The former Marquette standout is definitely the type of player that new Sixers head coach Doc Rivers loved having on his previous teams.</p><p>Philly has needed more shooting for a while, and that’s especially true now that analytics master Daryl Morey is now in charge of basketball operations. Matthews is cut out for Morey’s preferred style, considering he can knock those long balls with ease and is versatile enough to play multiple positions.
