With a Kobe Bryant-like mindset when it comes to scoring and the ability to impact the game in multiple facets, it makes sense that he would grow disgruntled with his <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/wizards-news-washington-buyout-agreement-will-barton" rel="noopener">situation with the Washington Wizards</a>.</p><p>Nonetheless, Barton’s time with the Raptors hasn’t gotten off to an ideal start, with him playing just four minutes in his Raptors debut after averaging 19.6 minutes per game with the Wizards this season.</p><p>Unfortunately, the prospects of Barton receiving much more playing time moving forward don’t look too good. Established 3-and-D wing Gary Trent Jr. is in the rotation as the sixth man. The steadily progressing Precious Achiuwa plays an important role for the Raptors frontcourt, while Chris Boucher remains an intriguing presence in the second unit.</p><p>Furthermore, to give Barton more minutes would mean less scoring and playmaking opportunities for Fred VanVleet, Scottie Barnes, OG Anunoby, and Pascal Siakam. The Raptors may not want to take the ball of the hands of the aforementioned players, and nobody could truly blame them.</p><p>That said, with the Raptors shooting 33.5 percent from 3-point range (27th in the NBA) and averaging 112.6 points per game (23rd in the NBA), they do need help in areas where Barton excels. To make room for Barton, Toronto released <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/raptors-news-scottie-barnes-goes-full-bo-cruz-fanboy-over-juancho-hernangomez-signing" rel="noopener">Juancho Hernangomez</a>, who appeared in 42 games with the Raptors in 2022-23 and started ten of them.</p><p>Barton, 32, has played for three different teams across his 11 years in the NBA. He averaged 7.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 0.4 steals, and 0.3 blocks per game across 40 appearances with the Washington Wizards this season (zero starts).</p><p>The former University of Memphis standout is shooting the ball very accurately from behind the three-point arc in the 2022-23 campaign, at least by his standards — Barton’s current 38.0% three-point percentage is the second-highest of his pro career, worse than only his 2020-21 season percentage.</p><p>It’s incredible how much a team’s season can change in a matter of a few weeks in the NBA. It wasn’t long ago when folks said that the Raptors should blow up their core and tank. However, during the games he was able to play for long minutes, the veteran swingman has shown he can still produce at a high level. In a three-game stretch in mid-December when he averaged 30 minutes a night, he put up an average of 19.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 6.0 dimes.</p><p>While it’s unlikely he’ll be able to do that for longer stretches, it remains true that he could best the bench unit of any team he joins.</p><p>The Sixers could definitely use his help as they prepare for what should be another playoff appearance. The Milwaukee Bucks and Brooklyn Nets could make a run at Barton, he continued.</p><p>The 32-year-old guard is averaging 7.5 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game in 38 games played for the Wizards. Barton’s minutes stagnated as the month of December drew on, falling from as high as nearly 36 minutes against the Denver Nuggets on Dec. 14 to not playing in two straight games against the San Antonio Spurs and New Orleans Pelicans in late January.</p><p>Barton is on the final year of a <a href="https://www.spotrac.com/nba/washington-wizards/will-barton-10865/" rel="noopener">two-year, $32 million</a> contract he signed with the Nuggets in 2021, according to Spotrac. The 12-year NBA veteran is earning a $14.38 million base salary this year.</p><p>Will Barton was traded along with guard Monte Morris for guards Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Ish Smith in July, according to the NBA. The Wizards received both Will Barton and Monte Morris from the Nuggets, but both of them have been performing at a less-than-desirable level so far. </p><p>Washington is currently the loser of the trade because Kentavious Caldwell-Pope has been flourishing with the Denver Nuggets, who was the main piece of the trade that the Wizards sent back.</p><p>Morris’ numbers have plummeted as a starter, but it is Barton who has been worse because there have been some matchups wherein coach Wes Unseld Jr. decides to leave him on the bench for the whole game. With Barton as an expiring contract, it could be plausible to move him to three of these organizations before the February 9th trade deadline.</p><p><b>Atlanta Hawks</b></p><p>One franchise that is in dire need of any sort of change in its roster is the Atlanta Hawks. The Dejounte Murray trade in the offseason was supposed to propel them to a top-four or five seed in the East, but they have been worse with all the issues revolving around their franchise. One major issue is their offensive numbers have dipped a ton with this roster and adding Will Barton could be the answer for them.</p><p>It was questionable for them to move Kevin Huerter in the offseason, and now they need a player with a similar approach to him. Barton can fill in that slot with the Hawks moving the expiring contract of Derrick Favors and a salary filler to make the trade work. Favors is not being utilized by Atlanta anyways, so this is a low-risk high-reward swap.</p><p><b>Dallas Mavericks</b></p><p>A team that has been on the upswing in the last month is the Dallas Mavericks. Their team has been excellent because of the spectacular play of Slovenian Luka Doncic, but their current style and roster might not be enough to compete with the Golden State Warriors or Denver Nuggets in the playoffs. The Mavericks still need a couple of players to give them a legitimate chance, especially with the Jalen Brunson loss.</p><p>Will Barton could be a minor piece that can have a large impact on Dallas because he will be a microwave off the bench, playing behind Spencer Dinwiddie. The Frank Ntilikina and Jaden Hardy spots could be upgraded to Barton, especially with his experience in the postseason already. Moreover, Dallas has movable contracts like Davis Bertans or Dwight Powell that could make the money work with the Wizards.</p><p><b>Phoenix Suns</b></p><p>Over the last couple of years, there has been a myriad of guards or wings that have been mentioned to help the duo of Chris Paul and Devin Booker. Guys like Terry Rozier, Kyle Kuzma, and Jordan Clarkson are some of the popular names, but that might be wishing a bit too much for the Phoenix fans. With Jae Crowder still on their payroll and sitting at home, they might be able to move him for a package centered around Will Barton.</p><p>Both of these guys have been having the worst years of their careers, so this swap could materialize on both sides. Barton will come off the bench as an alternative to both Landry Shamet and Damion Lee. Just because general manager Tommy Shepherd and the front office are unlikely to make a major splash, though, hardly means Washington will be avoiding the trade market entirely leading up to February 9th.</p><p>The Wizards have been contacted by interested teams about the status of <a href="https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10061547-nba-insider-notebook-jae-crowder-confused-and-hurt-by-situation-in-phoenix" rel="noopener">veteran guard Will Barton</a>, according to Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report. While the team has reportedly stopped short of “actively shopping” the 11th-year veteran, Washington could go that route barring a swift turnaround in the win-loss column.</p><p>“The Washington Wizards have been receiving calls on the availability of guard Will Barton ahead of the Feb. 9 trade deadline, league sources tell B/R…The Wizards aren’t said to be actively shopping Barton as of yet, but things could change if the team continues to struggle. The 32-year-old is on an expiring $14.4 million deal.”</p><p>The Wizards’ total salary sits just below the luxury tax line. Dealing Barton before the deadline would give them additional flexibility to make other moves or simply lessen the hit on owner Ted Leonsis’ wallet.</p><p>Barton has fallen out of Wes Unseld Jr.’s rotation of late after beginning 2022-23 as a key reserve. He’s shooting just 37.5% from the field, a career-low accounted for by ugly 38.3% shooting on twos. Barton has at least been respectable from beyond the arc this season, sustaining his potential viability as a third or fourth perimeter player off the bench for a contending team that needs additional depth.</p><p>His $14.4 million expiring contract could also be of use to teams seeking more salary ballast for a bigger trade. However, league rules would prevent Barton’s new team from including him in a multi-player deal, instead limited to trading him again in a one-for-one swap.</p><p>Keep a close eye on Washington as February 9th approaches. His tenure came to an end around a month ago after the Nuggets decided to send him to the Washington Wizards in a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nuggets-news-denver-trades-monte-morris-will-barton-to-wizards-for-kentavious-caldwell-pope-ish-smith/">trade deal</a> that took the veteran by surprise.</p><p>Barton has now opened up about the experience he had to go through the moment he realized he was being shipped off. Naturally, shock was the first thing that he felt once he realized that he was going to be leaving a place he called home for nearly a decade (via <a href="https://www.denverpost.com/2022/08/11/will-barton-trade-shock-nuggets-wizards/">The Denver Post</a>):</p><blockquote>“It was just like a shock, but not too much of a shock,” Barton said. “It was a shock in that, obviously, I had been there eight years, did so much there together, so it’s always shocking when you’ve been somewhere for so long and you’re moving on. But, at the same time, I embraced it, I’m welcoming a new chapter.”</blockquote><p>It was in Denver where Barton carved out his role as an integral part of a squad with title aspirations. He’s firmly established himself as a starter for the Nuggets for the past four seasons, and now he’s taking on a new challenge with his new team.</p><p>Barton arrived in Washington with Monte Morris. In exchange, the Nuggets got Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Ish Smith in the trade deal. Morris averaged 12.6 points and 4.4 assists last season and is one of the most turnover-averse players in the league. He would be a strong option to start next to Beal. Barton averaged 14.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game and could be a useful scorer for a Washington team looking to make it back to the playoffs.</p><p>Caldwell-Pope, after being traded to Washington as a part of the deal that sent Russell Westbrook to the Los Angeles Lakers, is off to his third team in three seasons. His shooting and defense will be very helpful alongside Jokic for the <a href="http://fanatics.93n6tx.net/vnZW7v" rel="noopener">Nuggets</a>. Denver fought everyone besides the five players playing on the court.</p><p>Nikola Jokic had to be stopped by Stephen Curry and others from a potential fight with Gary Payton II, and Will Barton and Demarcus Cousins had a brief altercation with each other on their bench. While it was happening, Draymond Green left the Warriors bench to hype up the crowd.</p><p>“I just saw them arguing,” Green told ClutchPoints. “I wasn’t sure who was arguing, but somebody’s down there arguing. The crowd should notice that, and they should be very loud for that.”</p><p>The Chase Center crowd was as loud as they had ever been at times throughout the game, but it was strangely quiet when the altercation on the Nuggets bench occurred. Green and his teammates loved the energy of their fans, but one thing kept the night from being perfect.</p><p>“It took me a while to get them loud. That was disappointing,” Green jokingly told the media.</p><p>Green was a menace all night, and the three-time champion put together a masterful performance for the fans. A lot of extra negativity came with the Monday night loss. MVP candidate Nikola Jokic was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-draymond-green-savagely-trolls-nikola-jokic-after-nuggets-star-is-ejected-in-blowout/">ejected</a> with seven minutes left in the game. The Joker was reacting to a non-call on Warriors’ Draymond Green when he was kicked from the contest.</p><p>Even before Jokic’s ejection, the Nuggets dealt with in-team issues. In the third quarter, tensions were high and the Warriors were gaining a decent lead. This is when Will Barton and DeMarcus Cousins got into a verbal altercation.</p><p>Postgame, a reporter asked Barton what the issue was between the Nuggets teammates. He has long been considered as a crucial part of the team, which is why he was sorely missed during the playoffs.</p><p>Barton suffered a hamstring injury late in the campaign, forcing him to miss the last 13 games of the regular season. His absence extended to the playoffs, only returning in Game 2 of the second round against the Phoenix Suns.</p><p>While he struggled in his return for Denver, he made sure to show the Nuggets what he is truly capable of when he banked 25 points in Game 4 against the Suns.</p><p>Barton averaged 12.7 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.2 assists in the 56 games he played for Denver in 2020-21. While it is below his previous average, he has more than proven he can provide scoring whether as a starter or as a member of the second unit.</p><p>It remains to be seen if Barton will still explore free agency since there will undoubtedly be a lot of interested teams. Barton’s return would be a welcome sign for the Nuggets, who have also been without star point guard Jamal Murray after he suffered a season-ending injury.</p><p>Barton was having a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nuggets-news-will-barton-speaks-out-on-scary-hamstring-injury/">solid year</a> before the injury, as he averaged 12.7 points with four boards and 3.2 assists. Truth be told, the Nuggets could definitely use some more ball handlers and the Suns pose some serious troubles for Denver.</p><p>Austin Rivers, who was originally signed to a 10-day contract, has been thrown into the starting lineup. Facundo Campazzo, in his first NBA season, has been forced to play heavy minutes against Damian Lillard and the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round and now against Devin Booker and Chris Paul as the Suns are hot off of a series victory against LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers.</p><p>The stakes are high, and the timing is perfect for Barton to return to action as the Nuggets have lacked play-making outside of Jokic and Michael Porter Jr. Hopefully, Barton can return and play big minutes while providing a spark for a Nuggets team who has faced a fair amount of injuries on the season.</p><p>So, the addition of Barton should provide a huge boost to the Nuggets as they try and avoid an 0-2 deficit with Game 2 on Wednesday night. The good news here is that it has since been diagnosed as a strain. Barton is still expected to miss some time with this recent knock and the Nuggets have actually been unable to provide a timetable for his return.</p><p>There’s no denying that this is still a significant injury for Barton. Hamstring issues often tend to be problematic and they usually require some time to heal. Nevertheless, the silver lining here is that this is not going to be a season-ending injury for Will. He is reportedly expected to miss at least a <a href="https://twitter.com/msinger/status/1386020870523482113?s=20">handful of games</a>, but again, Barton should be back for the Nuggets for the home stretch.</p><p>Denver is in a tight race in the West right now. While a postseason berth is virtually guaranteed at this point, they are still battling for position in the conference. At 38-21, the Nuggets are currently fourth in the West, with the defending champs, the Los Angeles Lakers, breathing down their neck at fifth.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
