However, San Antonio quickly answered that question by signing <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-mic-catches-deaaron-fox-savage-message-epic-camp-dunk">Fox to a max</a> contract extension, giving them one of the deepest guard rooms in the league, including <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/44924025/spurs-guard-stephon-castle-wins-rookie-year-honors" rel="noopener">last year’s Rookie of the Year</a>, Stephon Castle.</p><p>However, San Antonio <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/los-angeles-lakers/what-im-hearing-austin-reaves-lakers-contract">may not be done</a> adding to their guard depth just yet, per Anthony Irwin of ClutchPoints.</p><p>“If/when (Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin) Reaves opts out of his current contract, he’ll be an unrestricted free agent with plenty of interest. League sources say the San Antonio Spurs and other teams are keeping a close eye on Reaves’ free agency,” reported Irwin.</p><p>Irwin also noted that “seeing as LA could potentially lose Reaves for nothing, they’d be remiss not to consider trading him at some point this season, especially if it becomes clear he and (Luka) Doncic’s athleticism concerns are too much to overcome in pursuit of a championship.”</p><p>At this point, it’s unclear what that potential trade package could look like, but there have indeed been concerns that Doncic and Reaves could be a turnstile on defense this year and untenable as a starting backcourt with one another.</p><h2><b>An interesting idea for the Spurs</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Lakers-news-Chris-Broussard-makes-favorites-in-the-West-declaration-but-there-s-a-catch-2.jpg"><figcaption>Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The San Antonio Spurs reportedly had interest in signing Austin Reaves during his last free agency period in 2023 following his breakout year with the Lakers, but he ended up returning to Los Angeles on a new deal.</p><p>As previously noted, the Spurs have surrounded superstar Victor Wembanyama with plenty of, and perhaps even too much, depth at the guard position, so it’s unclear exactly where Reaves would fit into that lineup.</p><p>In any case, the Spurs are currently preparing for their upcoming season, which they hope will be the first of the Wembanyama era in which they experience true success. All of these players have been <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/san-antonio-spurs-final-move-must-make-complete-2025-nba-offseason">brought to the Spurs</a> in support of Victor Wembanyama, who has been cleared to return after his blood clot scare a year ago.</p><p>The Spurs traded for Fox at the deadline in 2024-24, and as ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel reported, Fox <a href="https://x.com/BrettSiegelNBA/status/1952089005845106866" rel="noopener">became eligible on Sunday</a> for a four-year, $229 million extension.</p><p>Recently, NBA insider Marc Stein took to his Substack to shed some light on <a href="https://marcstein.substack.com/p/sunday-best-the-latest-hottest-and-f4d?utm_source=post-email-title&amp;publication_id=392205&amp;post_id=169968088&amp;utm_campaign=email-post-title&amp;isFreemail=false&amp;r=39f60&amp;triedRedirect=true&amp;utm_medium=email" rel="noopener">the league’s thought process</a> regarding a potential extension for the former All-Star.</p><p>“Since acquiring Fox… San Antonio has watched Stephon Castle win Rookie of the Year honors and won the rights via the draft lottery to select Dylan Harper with the No. 2 overall pick on June 25,” reported Stein. “Those developments have many people wondering leaguewide: How automatic is a max for Fox now?”</p><p>Siegel also reported that “it sounds like (Fox) will be getting an extension worth slightly less than the max.”</p><p>The emergence of Castle and the draft lottery luck that led to Harper have complicated what once seemed like an obvious decision to keep Fox around long-term, regardless of the price.</p><h2><b>A bizarre scenario for the Spurs</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Victor-Wembanyama-attacks-Rudy-Goberts-defense.jpg"><figcaption>Daniel Dunn-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>At the present moment, De’Aaron Fox is clearly the best of the three players in the Spurs’ guard logjam, but with Harper and Castle both being 20 years old or younger, there is plenty of room for those two to catch up to Fox’s level.</p><p>The only way they’ll be able to do so, however, is if they get consistent minutes, which may be hard for the Spurs to provide if Fox is running point. A lot of the answer to the Spurs’ dilemma depends on how quickly they are planning to compete with Wembanyama as their centerpiece. If the goal is to win now, it would make sense for Fox to get the majority of the minutes and an extension.</p><p>However, if the Spurs are willing to endure a couple more years of growing pains before true contention, they may be rewarded for their patience with a more sustainable core built around Wembanyama and either Harper, Castle, or both.</p><p>San Antonio certainly has some interesting decisions to make.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Last year, San Antonio saw Stephon Castle win Rookie of the Year and traded for De’Aaron Fox midway through the season, then they <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/dylan-harper-carter-bryant-embracing-spurs-legacy">selected guard Dylan Harper</a> with the second overall pick in the ensuing NBA Draft.</p><p>With all of these talented guards on the roster, there has been speculation that one of them could become the odd man out, and recently, ESPN NBA insider Jeremy Woo <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45807536/2025-nba-draft-executives-debate-espn-poll-rookies-year-best-picks-summer-league" rel="noopener">shed some light</a> in that department, citing a Western Conference scout.</p><p>“[Harper] has some [Manu] Ginobili to his offensive game,” said the scout. “If the 3-point shot ever becomes a true weapon [for him], he makes Fox expendable and gives San Antonio a nice trade asset.”</p><p>Woo also noted that “Harper’s pick-and-roll prowess and crafty, powerful style of play made him the choice for the Spurs, who have been optimizing for additional playmaking around Victor Wembanyama moving forward,” and that even if he comes off the bench this year, the Spurs still view him as a foundational piece of their future.</p><h2><b>An awkward situation for the Spurs</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/San-Antonio-Spurs-guard-DeAaron-Fox-4-points-in-the-first-half-against-the-Dallas-Mavericks-at-Frost-Bank-Center.jpg"><figcaption>Daniel Dunn-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Being too talented is almost always a good problem to have, but it’s still something that the Spurs must address as it pertains to their guard depth chart, and whether some of those resources would be better allocated to other parts of their roster.</p><p>At the current juncture, Fox figures to get the starting point guard nod for San Antonio, with Castle possibly sliding in beside him in the backcourt. However, Harper was one of this year’s most highly touted draft prospects for a reason, and it’s possible that at some point, he will force the Spurs coaching staff to give him increased minutes.</p><p>If things reach that point, it’s not hard to envision other teams inquiring about Fox’s availability.</p><p>However, in the present moment, Spurs fans can be happy that their team is clearly taking its effort to build around Wembanyama seriously, even if they may have created a guard logjam in the process.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

However, former San Antonio Spurs guard Chris Paul is still a free agent as he considers his next move. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/nba-news-chris-paul-hints-final-season-amid-clippers-suns-bucks-rumors">Paul has already hinted that next season will be his last</a>. Despite that and his age, teams want to bring him in, including the Los Angeles Clippers and Phoenix Suns.</p><p>Paul is entering his 21st NBA season, but teams still consider him an asset. He is not an All-NBA guard anymore, serving as a veteran leader. According to ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/siegels-scoop-latest-intel-jonathan-kuminga-chris-paul-top-remaining-free-agents">Clippers and Suns are near the top of the list</a>.</p><p>“Although both the Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Lakers have been mentioned as suitors for Paul this summer, rival teams expect either the Phoenix Suns or Los Angeles Clippers to sign Paul,” Siegel said.</p><p>Heading to either location would be a reunion for Paul. He helped guide the Clippers to some of the best seasons in the franchise’s history. The guard was the biggest piece of Lob City alongside DeAndre Jordan and Blake Griffin. However, he made the first and <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/p/paulch01.html" rel="noopener">only NBA Finals appearance of his career</a> with the Suns.</p><p>Multiple factors will play a role in Paul’s decision. First of all, the guard’s family has lived in Los Angeles throughout most of his career. The journeyman could choose to sign with the Clippers just to be close to his loved ones.</p><p>On the other hand, the Suns offer him a chance to play a larger role beside Devin Booker, one of his favorite teammates. Depending on what <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/nba-rumors-how-bradley-beal-impacts-chris-paul-free-agency-decision">Phoenix’s checkbook looks like after a potential Bradley Beal buyout</a>, the Suns’ offer might not be as lucrative.</p><p>At the end of the day, next season will be Paul’s last. San Antonio Spurs point guard <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/mavericks-rumors-dallas-immediate-chris-paul-plans-after-drafting-cooper-flagg">Chris Paul is perhaps the most notable of those names</a> and plenty of teams are expected to be pursuing him when free agency opens on Monday.</p><p>Paul reportedly wants to play closer to home in Los Angeles, so a Western Conference team seems like then likely outcome for his free agency. The Phoenix Suns and the Los Angeles Clippers have <a href="https://marcstein.substack.com/p/chris-pauls-looming-free-agency-with?utm_source=post-email-title&amp;publication_id=392205&amp;post_id=167117215&amp;utm_campaign=email-post-title&amp;isFreemail=false&amp;r=39f60&amp;triedRedirect=true&amp;utm_medium=email" rel="noopener">emerged as two potential suitors</a> for the future Hall of Famer, according to Marc Stein and Jake Fischer of The Stein Line.</p><p>“The Los Angeles Clippers, in addition to Phoenix, are another of Paul’s former teams that is said to be weighing a second engagement with the 12-time NBA All-Star, who turned 40 in May,” Stein and Fischer wrote. “Paul’s family stayed in Los Angeles this season while Dad played in South Texas.”</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/suns-news-tyus-jones-mike-budenholzer-disagree-energy-pressure-mounting">Suns could very well be losing Tyus Jones</a> in free agency this offseason, which would open up a spot for Paul at a position of need. Of course, the legendary floor general made his only NBA Finals appearance alongside Devin Booker with the Suns back in 2021, so he would surely be welcomed back with open arms.</p><p>It would also be a reunion if Paul went back to the Clippers. He had some of his best individual seasons in Los Angeles with the “Lob City” Clippers from 2011-17, and it would be a full-circle moment to see him back with Los Angeles.</p><p>While Chris Paul isn’t the same player he was 10 years ago, he is a dependable veteran who can still give quality minutes to a playoff team. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/kristaps-porzingis-10-word-message-celtics-trade">Boston Celtics have already made two big trades</a> this offseason and are seemingly ready to make more. Speculation is that the front office reached out to the San Antonio Spurs for a trade involving the No. 14 pick overall.</p><p>Boston owns the No. 28 pick overall, and rumors are the Celtics <a href="https://x.com/IanBegley/status/1938022379751391405" rel="noopener">wanted to move up</a> to pick No. 14 with the Spurs, according to Ian Begley of SNYtv. It sounds like the organization has been in talks with several teams about potentially trading Sam Hauser, Jaylen Brown, and Derrick White.</p><p>“Celtics touched base today with teams, including San Antonio (No. 14), on deals that would land a lottery pick in tonight’s draft (Obviously, San Antonio is not moving its No. 2 overall pick). As others have reported, BOS has been getting offers for Sam Hauser and listening to offers for Jaylen Brown and Derrick White.”</p><p>The No. 14 pick very well could still be available to the Celtics. If the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-dylan-harper-mural-pops-up-san-antonio-2025-nba-draft">Spurs do decide</a> to deal that pick away, it likely won’t be announced until the franchise is on the clock. It could be an opportunity for San Antonio to acquire a veteran player who fits the mold of the roster to mesh well with Victor Wembanayama and No. 2 pick Dylan Harper.</p><p>It’s also possible the Celtics do get into the lottery range of the draft, as the front office is restructuring the roster for the future. Jayson Tatum is likely to miss the entirety of next season after tearing his Achilles in the playoffs. So, Boston is using that one-year hiatus to conduct a mini-rebuild.</p><p>We’ll see how it all plays out. Many have speculated that the Spurs may look to trade that pick for a win-now player as they look to build a competitive team <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-rumors-san-antonio-targeting-ex-1st-rounder-with-victor-wembanyama-connection">around superstar Victor Wembanyama.</a></p><p>However, recently, Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints broke down why this is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/2025-nba-mock-draft-5-0-76ers-hornets-ace-bailey-destiny-latest-intel">not the case.</a></p><p>“…there have been no indications that the Spurs are willing to trade the second pick, as they are locked in on Dylan Harper,” reported Siegel.</p><p>Harper is the <a href="https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/5037871/dylan-harper" rel="noopener">talented Rutgers guard</a> who has long been rumored to be one of the first names called off the board this year.</p><p>Of course, drafting him would create somewhat of a logjam at the guard position for the Spurs, as the team already has reigning Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle as well as last year’s trade acquisition De’Aaron Fox.</p><p>However, Siegel reported that the Spurs see this playing out one of two ways. The preferred scenario is that they “hit a gold mine with Harper playing alongside Castle and Fox, as all three guards fit like a glove playing off one another.”</p><p>Conversely, if things don’t turn out so seamlessly, one of the three could be leveraged “in trade talks for a superstar down the line,” per Siegel.</p><h2><b>A big evening for the Spurs</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Spurs-All-Star-Victor-Wembanyama-sitting-courtside.jpg"><figcaption>Jerome Miron-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Spurs’ chances of landing a pick as high as the one they have on Wednesday were slim, but then again, so were the team’s chances of being able to draft Wembanyama in the first place.</p><p>It remains to be seen how the team will distribute minutes next year should they indeed draft Harper with their number two overall pick. While people have been <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/ranking-3-best-kristaps-porzingis-trade-destinations-celtics-move-on">speculating where Porzingis ends up if the Celtics move on</a>, one team that has been connected to the big man in the latest reports is the San Antonio Spurs.</p><p>According to Jake Fischer in “The Stein Line,” San Antonio is a <a href="https://marcstein.substack.com/p/inside-the-celtics-first-big-trade?utm_source=post-email-title&amp;publication_id=392205&amp;post_id=166730327&amp;utm_campaign=email-post-title&amp;isFreemail=false&amp;r=39f60&amp;triedRedirect=true&amp;utm_medium=email" rel="noopener">team with an interest</a> in trading for Porzingis, which no doubt would be an interesting move to pair the seven-foot-two player alongside seven-foot-five Victor Wembanyama. However, Fischer expressed that it could be an “unlikely destination,” though the team is looking for big men, whether it be via a trade or the draft.</p><p>“The Spurs, sources say, have held some exploratory talks about trading for the 7-foot-2 center,” Fischer wrote. “That would certainly be a fascinating outcome for Porziņģis if he were to land with the on-the-rise Spurs alongside the 7-foot-5 Victor Wembanyama. They have not seized opportunities to expedite their rebuilding process, preferring to keep their young talent instead of packaging them together in a trade for someone like Kevin Durant or perhaps even Giannis Antetokounmpo.</p><p>Nonetheless, with Wembanyama rapidly improving, it’s only a matter of time before the Spurs become a powerhouse in the Western Conference once more. To push the Oklahoma City Thunder for West supremacy, the Spurs will need to load up on even more depth, as the two teams that made it to the NBA Finals proved that there is nothing more important in today’s NBA than having many players on the roster who are playoff-viable.</p><p>To that end, it seems as though the Spurs <a href="https://hoopshype.com/lists/nba-intel-kevin-durant-trade-rockets-suns-heat-timberwolves-raptors-thunder-pacers-kings/" rel="noopener">are targeting</a> a versatile big man who has strong ties to their franchise cornerstone. According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, the Spurs are “among several teams expected to have interest in Yabusele during free agency”. Yabusele and Wembanyama are very much familar with one another, being the primary frontcourt pairing that the France National Basketball Team relied on on their way to the silver medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics.</p><p>Yabusele, the 16th overall pick of the 2016 NBA Draft, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/76ers-news-guerschon-yabuseles-excited-approach-to-upcoming-free-agency">made his triumphant return stateside</a> this past season with the Philadelphia 76ers. He averaged 11.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game on 50/38/73 shooting splits — a major improvement from the last time he stepped foot in the NBA.</p><p>He started in 43 games last season for the depleted 76ers and proved himself capable of being a small-ball center, as well as fitting on bigger lineups as a power forward, thanks to his defensive versatility and floor-stretching utility.</p><h2><b>Guerschon Yabusele’s potential fit on the Spurs</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Guerschon-Yabusele-28-reacts-after-missing-a-shot-against-the-New-York-Knicks.jpg"><figcaption>© Bill Streicher-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Should the Spurs sign Wembanyama’s compatriot in Yabusele, it’s not quite clear what role the 29-year-old forward will be playing for them. He’s not likely to start for the Spurs, as they have Jeremy Sochan, Harrison Barnes, and Keldon Johnson as options at the position, so he’s probably going to end up being a backup big man for San Antonio.</p><p>With Sandro Mamukelashvili, Charles Bassey, and Bismack Biyombo all being free agents, the Spurs certainly have more than enough room for the potential addition of Yabusele, who will add toughness and positional versatility to their frontcourt.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The franchise has a lot of options, and they could very well be the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/nba-rumors-insider-spurs-kevin-durant-trade-pursuit">team that trades for Kevin Durant</a>.</p><p>San Antonio owns the No. 2 overall pick in the Draft. Dylan Harper is without a doubt the second-best player behind Cooper Flagg, and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-cooper-flagg-biggest-thing-2025-nba-draft">Flagg will be taken first overall</a> by the Dallas Mavericks. The draft is considered to start at the No. 3 pick, owned by the Philadelphia 76ers. However, one <a href="https://hardwoodparoxysm.substack.com/p/nba-draft-rumors-hearsay-hints-allegations?utm_source=post-email-title&amp;publication_id=3283378&amp;post_id=166332230&amp;utm_campaign=email-post-title&amp;isFreemail=false&amp;r=39f60&amp;triedRedirect=true&amp;utm_medium=email" rel="noopener">insider thinks the Spurs could throw a curveball</a> and maybe move the pick.</p><p>“Everyone is certain the Spurs are A. keeping the pick and B. taking Harper,” insider Matt Moore wrote. “My question would be how often has intel out of San Antonio been correct outside of Wemby, which, I mean, come on. They move in silence.</p><p>“Yes, Harper is the logical and simple choice. But do not be surprised if they throw a huge curveball in this whole thing. The Castle-Harper positional awkwardness is not insolvable but is real.”</p><p>It’s not clear exactly what he means by “curveball,” but it is assumed that it would be meant to lead to a trade that could happen prior to or during the NBA Draft on Wednesday. Whether that trade is for Kevin Durant or another potential star, the Spurs have options.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/giannis-antetokounmpo-trade-grades-for-espns-spurs-bucks-proposal">Giannis Antetokounmpo is rumored to potentially get traded</a> out of Milwaukee, and teaming up with Victor Wembanyama would be something the NBA has not ever seen.</p><p>The Spurs are projected to take Harper with the second pick. With De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle in the backcourt, adding Harper would make it crowded. The 6-foot-6 guard from Rutgers could move to the three if necessary.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-stephon-castle-hits-2025-26-outlook-with-reality-check-after-roy-win">Castle just won Rookie of the Year</a>, so adding a player to the same position may not be smart for the team’s long term. However, there are plenty of considerations. Durant has reportedly earmarked the Spurs, the Miami Heat, and the Houston Rockets as his preferred destinations. On the other hand, the Phoenix Suns are eyeing their options and will hold out for the best possible package they can get for the 36-year-old.</p><p>Lining up Durant alongside Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox makes them automatic contenders. And while the allure of one of the best scorers in NBA history is attractive, there might be limits as to how far the Spurs are willing to go for his signature.</p><p>“Now, as you know, Dave, because you and I lived it with the Fox trade, we just saw how the Spurs had zero intention or willingness to give up anything on their roster—let alone anybody in their young core. I don’t know that that has changed all that much. The way it’s put to me: they’re not going to go all in to get Kevin,” The Athletic’s Sam Amick said, when asked about KD’s <a href="https://hoopshype.com/rumor/spurs-not-expected-to-go-all-in-for-kevin-durant/" rel="noopener">most likely destination</a>.</p><p>The Spurs sent out Zach Collins, Tre Jones, Sidy Cissoko, and multiple draft picks in the three-team trade that saw Fox arrive earlier in February. However, they were unwilling to trade away any of their young stars, something Amick believes remains true when it comes to KD as well. This becomes problematic especially as Phoenix hold out for the best package.</p><p>“My understanding is you have the list—the thing his camp chooses to leak to the media—and then you have the real stuff, which is what Kevin is telling people. And we’ve come across some of that, and there’s reason to believe he’s looking at San Antonio above the rest,” Amick said.</p><p>While Durant may prefer a move to the Spurs, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/phoenix-suns/ranking-suns-best-realistic-kevin-durant-trade-packages">much depends on how Phoenix proceeds</a>. KD is under contract with the Suns through the 2025-26 season, after which he will become an unrestricted free agent. Those same reports, along with speculation, suggest the Phoenix Suns are looking for more.</p><h2>Harrison Barnes faces trade question</h2><p>On behalf of the Harrison and Brittany Barnes Community Fund, the veteran forward helped <a href="https://x.com/austin_spurs/status/1935471354377032045" rel="noopener">unveil a newly renovated basketball court</a> at a Boys &amp; Girls Clubs location in the state’s capital city. Austin is approximately an hour away from San Antonio by car.</p><p>When Spurs players do such events, usually in the Alamo City, it’s common for them to take basketball-related questions as well. But in the rare cases that the player’s name is involved in contexts the franchise would rather avoid, the Spurs media staff has limited related questions.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/sources-spurs-ominously-go-quiet-kevin-durant-trade-speculation">Spurs have been linked to Durant</a> for several weeks now. He joined ClutchPoints in 2023.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>This offseason, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/spurs-rumors-espn-giannis-kevin-durant-trade-offers">San Antonio Spurs will be looking</a> for ways to retool their team around superstar Victor Wembanyama, trade acquisition De’Aaron Fox, and Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle. The name the Spurs have been most frequently <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-rumors-shams-claims-heat-rockets-piece-or-2-away-kevin-durant-trade">linked to is Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant</a>, but the team will still have plenty of avenues to improve even if they can’t acquire the future Hall of Famer.</p><p>Recently, ESPN floated <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45526277/2025-nba-draft-san-antonio-spurs-keep-no-2-pick-options" rel="noopener">a potential trade idea</a> that would see the Spurs land a highly coveted sharpshooter, proposing that San Antonio deal guard Malaki Branham, forward Keldon Johnson, the 2025 No. 14 pick, and a 2029 first-round pick to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for forward Cam Johnson and the number 27 pick in this year’s draft.</p><p>Bobby Marks of ESPN noted that “Johnson looks like an ideal fit. He averaged a career-high 18.8 points last season and has been a consistent 39% 3-point shooter who would space the floor as a stretch 4 alongside Wembanyama.”</p><p>Johnson indeed had a career year last season for a bad Nets team and is a versatile defender to go along with his impressive offensive skill set.</p><h2>A big summer for the Spurs</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Suns-Kevin-Durant-and-Spurs-Victor-Wembanyama-smiling.jpg"><figcaption>© Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>It’s not often that a team is in win-now mode just two years after drafting their franchise building block, but that’s exactly the situation the Spurs now find themselves in due to how quickly Victor Wembanyama has ascended the NBA ranks.</p><p>Last year, Wembanyama’s almost assured Defensive Player of the Year campaign was cut short due to a blood clot, but the star is expected to be back and fully healthy by the time next year rolls around.</p><p>The Spurs are sure to compete in what figures to be a highly competitive arms race in the Western Conference this summer, with teams looking to reach the level of the conference champion Oklahoma City Thunder.</p><p>Cam Johnson would certainly help space the floor for Wembanyama and Fox and would also provide the Spurs with some additional shot-creation to continue to put pressure on defenses.</p><p>The Spurs will now look ahead to the NBA draft, which is slated to begin on June 25.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

With the Phoenix Suns determined to find a trade for the 15-time All-Star, the Houston Rockets and Miami Heat have emerged as the frontrunners, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.</p><p>“At this point in these conversations, you’re looking at a piece [or] two away from deals getting done on multiple different sides. From Miami’s perspective and from Houston’s perspective,” Charania said Tuesday on The Pat McAfee Show.</p><p>Both teams have the assets to put together an enticing package for Durant.</p><h2>Rockets, Heat leading negotiations with Suns for Kevin Durant trade</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/USATSI_22401484.jpg"><figcaption>Sam Navarro-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>The Rockets have several young prospects, including Jalen Green, Jabari Smith Jr., Tari Eason and Reed Sheppard, whom they could dangle in negotiations. They also have the No. 10 pick in this year’s draft and the Suns’ first-round pick in 2027.</p><p>The Heat have made Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro off-limits in negotiations. However, they could build a package around some assortment of Andrew Wiggins, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez, Nikola Jovic and future first-round picks.</p><p>The San Antonio Spurs and Minnesota Timberwolves <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6431028/2025/06/16/kevin-durant-trade-timberwolves-possibility-nba-rumors/?so" rel="noopener">have also expressed interest</a> in trading for Durant. The Athletic’s Sam Amick and Jon Krawczynski reported on Monday that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/phoenix-suns/nba-rumors-kevin-durants-specific-team-in-mind-as-trade-landing-spot">the Spurs are Durant’s preferred destination</a>. However, the young team has been hesitant to part with significant assets for the soon-to-be 37-year-old Durant.</p><p>San Antonio is on a different timeline with a young core of Victor Wembanyama (21), De’Aaron Fox (27), Stephon Castle (20) and projected No. 2 pick Dylan Harper.</p><p>Meanwhile, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/minnesota-timberwolves/timberwolves-rumors-kevin-durant-no-desire-play-minnesota">Durant’s camp has made it clear</a> that Minnesota is not one of his preferred destinations. With the veteran superstar in the final year of his contract, the Timberwolves will have to decide whether they are comfortable trading significant pieces without a commitment beyond this season.</p><p>“Minnesota is the one wild card team,” Charania said. “They’ve made back-to-back Western Conference finals. I reported over the weekend Kevin Durant’s three preferred spots: Miami, Houston and San Antonio. No Minnesota on that list, so clearly there’s not an interest for Kevin Durant to go there. But Minnesota wouldn’t be the first team to trade for a player that doesn’t want to be there. Obviously, the Raptors did it in 2018 with Kawhi Leonard… So it’s not something that’s revolutionary.</p><p>“From my understanding, Minnesota is still studying it. They’re not out of it.
