San Antonio Spurs point guard <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/mavericks-rumors-dallas-immediate-chris-paul-plans-after-drafting-cooper-flagg">Chris Paul is perhaps the most notable of those names</a> and plenty of teams are expected to be pursuing him when free agency opens on Monday.</p><p>Paul reportedly wants to play closer to home in Los Angeles, so a Western Conference team seems like then likely outcome for his free agency. The Phoenix Suns and the Los Angeles Clippers have <a href="https://marcstein.substack.com/p/chris-pauls-looming-free-agency-with?utm_source=post-email-title&amp;publication_id=392205&amp;post_id=167117215&amp;utm_campaign=email-post-title&amp;isFreemail=false&amp;r=39f60&amp;triedRedirect=true&amp;utm_medium=email" rel="noopener">emerged as two potential suitors</a> for the future Hall of Famer, according to Marc Stein and Jake Fischer of The Stein Line.</p><p>“The Los Angeles Clippers, in addition to Phoenix, are another of Paul’s former teams that is said to be weighing a second engagement with the 12-time NBA All-Star, who turned 40 in May,” Stein and Fischer wrote. “Paul’s family stayed in Los Angeles this season while Dad played in South Texas.”</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/suns-news-tyus-jones-mike-budenholzer-disagree-energy-pressure-mounting">Suns could very well be losing Tyus Jones</a> in free agency this offseason, which would open up a spot for Paul at a position of need. Of course, the legendary floor general made his only NBA Finals appearance alongside Devin Booker with the Suns back in 2021, so he would surely be welcomed back with open arms.</p><p>It would also be a reunion if Paul went back to the Clippers. He had some of his best individual seasons in Los Angeles with the “Lob City” Clippers from 2011-17, and it would be a full-circle moment to see him back with Los Angeles.</p><p>While Chris Paul isn’t the same player he was 10 years ago, he is a dependable veteran who can still give quality minutes to a playoff team. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/kristaps-porzingis-10-word-message-celtics-trade">Boston Celtics have already made two big trades</a> this offseason and are seemingly ready to make more. Speculation is that the front office reached out to the San Antonio Spurs for a trade involving the No. 14 pick overall.</p><p>Boston owns the No. 28 pick overall, and rumors are the Celtics <a href="https://x.com/IanBegley/status/1938022379751391405" rel="noopener">wanted to move up</a> to pick No. 14 with the Spurs, according to Ian Begley of SNYtv. It sounds like the organization has been in talks with several teams about potentially trading Sam Hauser, Jaylen Brown, and Derrick White.</p><p>“Celtics touched base today with teams, including San Antonio (No. 14), on deals that would land a lottery pick in tonight’s draft (Obviously, San Antonio is not moving its No. 2 overall pick). As others have reported, BOS has been getting offers for Sam Hauser and listening to offers for Jaylen Brown and Derrick White.”</p><p>The No. 14 pick very well could still be available to the Celtics. If the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-dylan-harper-mural-pops-up-san-antonio-2025-nba-draft">Spurs do decide</a> to deal that pick away, it likely won’t be announced until the franchise is on the clock. It could be an opportunity for San Antonio to acquire a veteran player who fits the mold of the roster to mesh well with Victor Wembanayama and No. 2 pick Dylan Harper.</p><p>It’s also possible the Celtics do get into the lottery range of the draft, as the front office is restructuring the roster for the future. Jayson Tatum is likely to miss the entirety of next season after tearing his Achilles in the playoffs. So, Boston is using that one-year hiatus to conduct a mini-rebuild.</p><p>We’ll see how it all plays out. Many have speculated that the Spurs may look to trade that pick for a win-now player as they look to build a competitive team <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-rumors-san-antonio-targeting-ex-1st-rounder-with-victor-wembanyama-connection">around superstar Victor Wembanyama.</a></p><p>However, recently, Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints broke down why this is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/2025-nba-mock-draft-5-0-76ers-hornets-ace-bailey-destiny-latest-intel">not the case.</a></p><p>“…there have been no indications that the Spurs are willing to trade the second pick, as they are locked in on Dylan Harper,” reported Siegel.</p><p>Harper is the <a href="https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/5037871/dylan-harper" rel="noopener">talented Rutgers guard</a> who has long been rumored to be one of the first names called off the board this year.</p><p>Of course, drafting him would create somewhat of a logjam at the guard position for the Spurs, as the team already has reigning Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle as well as last year’s trade acquisition De’Aaron Fox.</p><p>However, Siegel reported that the Spurs see this playing out one of two ways. The preferred scenario is that they “hit a gold mine with Harper playing alongside Castle and Fox, as all three guards fit like a glove playing off one another.”</p><p>Conversely, if things don’t turn out so seamlessly, one of the three could be leveraged “in trade talks for a superstar down the line,” per Siegel.</p><h2><b>A big evening for the Spurs</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Spurs-All-Star-Victor-Wembanyama-sitting-courtside.jpg"><figcaption>Jerome Miron-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Spurs’ chances of landing a pick as high as the one they have on Wednesday were slim, but then again, so were the team’s chances of being able to draft Wembanyama in the first place.</p><p>It remains to be seen how the team will distribute minutes next year should they indeed draft Harper with their number two overall pick. While people have been <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/ranking-3-best-kristaps-porzingis-trade-destinations-celtics-move-on">speculating where Porzingis ends up if the Celtics move on</a>, one team that has been connected to the big man in the latest reports is the San Antonio Spurs.</p><p>According to Jake Fischer in “The Stein Line,” San Antonio is a <a href="https://marcstein.substack.com/p/inside-the-celtics-first-big-trade?utm_source=post-email-title&amp;publication_id=392205&amp;post_id=166730327&amp;utm_campaign=email-post-title&amp;isFreemail=false&amp;r=39f60&amp;triedRedirect=true&amp;utm_medium=email" rel="noopener">team with an interest</a> in trading for Porzingis, which no doubt would be an interesting move to pair the seven-foot-two player alongside seven-foot-five Victor Wembanyama. However, Fischer expressed that it could be an “unlikely destination,” though the team is looking for big men, whether it be via a trade or the draft.</p><p>“The Spurs, sources say, have held some exploratory talks about trading for the 7-foot-2 center,” Fischer wrote. “That would certainly be a fascinating outcome for Porziņģis if he were to land with the on-the-rise Spurs alongside the 7-foot-5 Victor Wembanyama. They have not seized opportunities to expedite their rebuilding process, preferring to keep their young talent instead of packaging them together in a trade for someone like Kevin Durant or perhaps even Giannis Antetokounmpo.</p><p>Nonetheless, with Wembanyama rapidly improving, it’s only a matter of time before the Spurs become a powerhouse in the Western Conference once more. To push the Oklahoma City Thunder for West supremacy, the Spurs will need to load up on even more depth, as the two teams that made it to the NBA Finals proved that there is nothing more important in today’s NBA than having many players on the roster who are playoff-viable.</p><p>To that end, it seems as though the Spurs <a href="https://hoopshype.com/lists/nba-intel-kevin-durant-trade-rockets-suns-heat-timberwolves-raptors-thunder-pacers-kings/" rel="noopener">are targeting</a> a versatile big man who has strong ties to their franchise cornerstone. According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, the Spurs are “among several teams expected to have interest in Yabusele during free agency”. Yabusele and Wembanyama are very much familar with one another, being the primary frontcourt pairing that the France National Basketball Team relied on on their way to the silver medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics.</p><p>Yabusele, the 16th overall pick of the 2016 NBA Draft, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/76ers-news-guerschon-yabuseles-excited-approach-to-upcoming-free-agency">made his triumphant return stateside</a> this past season with the Philadelphia 76ers. He averaged 11.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game on 50/38/73 shooting splits — a major improvement from the last time he stepped foot in the NBA.</p><p>He started in 43 games last season for the depleted 76ers and proved himself capable of being a small-ball center, as well as fitting on bigger lineups as a power forward, thanks to his defensive versatility and floor-stretching utility.</p><h2><b>Guerschon Yabusele’s potential fit on the Spurs</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Guerschon-Yabusele-28-reacts-after-missing-a-shot-against-the-New-York-Knicks.jpg"><figcaption>© Bill Streicher-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Should the Spurs sign Wembanyama’s compatriot in Yabusele, it’s not quite clear what role the 29-year-old forward will be playing for them. He’s not likely to start for the Spurs, as they have Jeremy Sochan, Harrison Barnes, and Keldon Johnson as options at the position, so he’s probably going to end up being a backup big man for San Antonio.</p><p>With Sandro Mamukelashvili, Charles Bassey, and Bismack Biyombo all being free agents, the Spurs certainly have more than enough room for the potential addition of Yabusele, who will add toughness and positional versatility to their frontcourt.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The franchise has a lot of options, and they could very well be the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/nba-rumors-insider-spurs-kevin-durant-trade-pursuit">team that trades for Kevin Durant</a>.</p><p>San Antonio owns the No. 2 overall pick in the Draft. Dylan Harper is without a doubt the second-best player behind Cooper Flagg, and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-cooper-flagg-biggest-thing-2025-nba-draft">Flagg will be taken first overall</a> by the Dallas Mavericks. The draft is considered to start at the No. 3 pick, owned by the Philadelphia 76ers. However, one <a href="https://hardwoodparoxysm.substack.com/p/nba-draft-rumors-hearsay-hints-allegations?utm_source=post-email-title&amp;publication_id=3283378&amp;post_id=166332230&amp;utm_campaign=email-post-title&amp;isFreemail=false&amp;r=39f60&amp;triedRedirect=true&amp;utm_medium=email" rel="noopener">insider thinks the Spurs could throw a curveball</a> and maybe move the pick.</p><p>“Everyone is certain the Spurs are A. keeping the pick and B. taking Harper,” insider Matt Moore wrote. “My question would be how often has intel out of San Antonio been correct outside of Wemby, which, I mean, come on. They move in silence.</p><p>“Yes, Harper is the logical and simple choice. But do not be surprised if they throw a huge curveball in this whole thing. The Castle-Harper positional awkwardness is not insolvable but is real.”</p><p>It’s not clear exactly what he means by “curveball,” but it is assumed that it would be meant to lead to a trade that could happen prior to or during the NBA Draft on Wednesday. Whether that trade is for Kevin Durant or another potential star, the Spurs have options.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/giannis-antetokounmpo-trade-grades-for-espns-spurs-bucks-proposal">Giannis Antetokounmpo is rumored to potentially get traded</a> out of Milwaukee, and teaming up with Victor Wembanyama would be something the NBA has not ever seen.</p><p>The Spurs are projected to take Harper with the second pick. With De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle in the backcourt, adding Harper would make it crowded. The 6-foot-6 guard from Rutgers could move to the three if necessary.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-stephon-castle-hits-2025-26-outlook-with-reality-check-after-roy-win">Castle just won Rookie of the Year</a>, so adding a player to the same position may not be smart for the team’s long term. However, there are plenty of considerations. Durant has reportedly earmarked the Spurs, the Miami Heat, and the Houston Rockets as his preferred destinations. On the other hand, the Phoenix Suns are eyeing their options and will hold out for the best possible package they can get for the 36-year-old.</p><p>Lining up Durant alongside Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox makes them automatic contenders. And while the allure of one of the best scorers in NBA history is attractive, there might be limits as to how far the Spurs are willing to go for his signature.</p><p>“Now, as you know, Dave, because you and I lived it with the Fox trade, we just saw how the Spurs had zero intention or willingness to give up anything on their roster—let alone anybody in their young core. I don’t know that that has changed all that much. The way it’s put to me: they’re not going to go all in to get Kevin,” The Athletic’s Sam Amick said, when asked about KD’s <a href="https://hoopshype.com/rumor/spurs-not-expected-to-go-all-in-for-kevin-durant/" rel="noopener">most likely destination</a>.</p><p>The Spurs sent out Zach Collins, Tre Jones, Sidy Cissoko, and multiple draft picks in the three-team trade that saw Fox arrive earlier in February. However, they were unwilling to trade away any of their young stars, something Amick believes remains true when it comes to KD as well. This becomes problematic especially as Phoenix hold out for the best package.</p><p>“My understanding is you have the list—the thing his camp chooses to leak to the media—and then you have the real stuff, which is what Kevin is telling people. And we’ve come across some of that, and there’s reason to believe he’s looking at San Antonio above the rest,” Amick said.</p><p>While Durant may prefer a move to the Spurs, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/phoenix-suns/ranking-suns-best-realistic-kevin-durant-trade-packages">much depends on how Phoenix proceeds</a>. KD is under contract with the Suns through the 2025-26 season, after which he will become an unrestricted free agent. Those same reports, along with speculation, suggest the Phoenix Suns are looking for more.</p><h2>Harrison Barnes faces trade question</h2><p>On behalf of the Harrison and Brittany Barnes Community Fund, the veteran forward helped <a href="https://x.com/austin_spurs/status/1935471354377032045" rel="noopener">unveil a newly renovated basketball court</a> at a Boys &amp; Girls Clubs location in the state’s capital city. Austin is approximately an hour away from San Antonio by car.</p><p>When Spurs players do such events, usually in the Alamo City, it’s common for them to take basketball-related questions as well. But in the rare cases that the player’s name is involved in contexts the franchise would rather avoid, the Spurs media staff has limited related questions.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/sources-spurs-ominously-go-quiet-kevin-durant-trade-speculation">Spurs have been linked to Durant</a> for several weeks now. The name the Spurs have been most frequently <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-rumors-shams-claims-heat-rockets-piece-or-2-away-kevin-durant-trade">linked to is Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant</a>, but the team will still have plenty of avenues to improve even if they can’t acquire the future Hall of Famer.</p><p>Recently, ESPN floated <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45526277/2025-nba-draft-san-antonio-spurs-keep-no-2-pick-options" rel="noopener">a potential trade idea</a> that would see the Spurs land a highly coveted sharpshooter, proposing that San Antonio deal guard Malaki Branham, forward Keldon Johnson, the 2025 No. 14 pick, and a 2029 first-round pick to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for forward Cam Johnson and the number 27 pick in this year’s draft.</p><p>Bobby Marks of ESPN noted that “Johnson looks like an ideal fit. He averaged a career-high 18.8 points last season and has been a consistent 39% 3-point shooter who would space the floor as a stretch 4 alongside Wembanyama.”</p><p>Johnson indeed had a career year last season for a bad Nets team and is a versatile defender to go along with his impressive offensive skill set.</p><h2>A big summer for the Spurs</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Suns-Kevin-Durant-and-Spurs-Victor-Wembanyama-smiling.jpg"><figcaption>© Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>It’s not often that a team is in win-now mode just two years after drafting their franchise building block, but that’s exactly the situation the Spurs now find themselves in due to how quickly Victor Wembanyama has ascended the NBA ranks.</p><p>Last year, Wembanyama’s almost assured Defensive Player of the Year campaign was cut short due to a blood clot, but the star is expected to be back and fully healthy by the time next year rolls around.</p><p>The Spurs are sure to compete in what figures to be a highly competitive arms race in the Western Conference this summer, with teams looking to reach the level of the conference champion Oklahoma City Thunder.</p><p>Cam Johnson would certainly help space the floor for Wembanyama and Fox and would also provide the Spurs with some additional shot-creation to continue to put pressure on defenses.</p><p>The Spurs will now look ahead to the NBA draft, which is slated to begin on June 25.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

With the Phoenix Suns determined to find a trade for the 15-time All-Star, the Houston Rockets and Miami Heat have emerged as the frontrunners, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.</p><p>“At this point in these conversations, you’re looking at a piece [or] two away from deals getting done on multiple different sides. From Miami’s perspective and from Houston’s perspective,” Charania said Tuesday on The Pat McAfee Show.</p><p>Both teams have the assets to put together an enticing package for Durant.</p><h2>Rockets, Heat leading negotiations with Suns for Kevin Durant trade</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/USATSI_22401484.jpg"><figcaption>Sam Navarro-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>The Rockets have several young prospects, including Jalen Green, Jabari Smith Jr., Tari Eason and Reed Sheppard, whom they could dangle in negotiations. They also have the No. 10 pick in this year’s draft and the Suns’ first-round pick in 2027.</p><p>The Heat have made Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro off-limits in negotiations. However, they could build a package around some assortment of Andrew Wiggins, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez, Nikola Jovic and future first-round picks.</p><p>The San Antonio Spurs and Minnesota Timberwolves <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6431028/2025/06/16/kevin-durant-trade-timberwolves-possibility-nba-rumors/?so" rel="noopener">have also expressed interest</a> in trading for Durant. The Athletic’s Sam Amick and Jon Krawczynski reported on Monday that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/phoenix-suns/nba-rumors-kevin-durants-specific-team-in-mind-as-trade-landing-spot">the Spurs are Durant’s preferred destination</a>. However, the young team has been hesitant to part with significant assets for the soon-to-be 37-year-old Durant.</p><p>San Antonio is on a different timeline with a young core of Victor Wembanyama (21), De’Aaron Fox (27), Stephon Castle (20) and projected No. 2 pick Dylan Harper.</p><p>Meanwhile, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/minnesota-timberwolves/timberwolves-rumors-kevin-durant-no-desire-play-minnesota">Durant’s camp has made it clear</a> that Minnesota is not one of his preferred destinations. With the veteran superstar in the final year of his contract, the Timberwolves will have to decide whether they are comfortable trading significant pieces without a commitment beyond this season.</p><p>“Minnesota is the one wild card team,” Charania said. “They’ve made back-to-back Western Conference finals. I reported over the weekend Kevin Durant’s three preferred spots: Miami, Houston and San Antonio. No Minnesota on that list, so clearly there’s not an interest for Kevin Durant to go there. But Minnesota wouldn’t be the first team to trade for a player that doesn’t want to be there. Obviously, the Raptors did it in 2018 with Kawhi Leonard… So it’s not something that’s revolutionary.</p><p>“From my understanding, Minnesota is still studying it. They’re not out of it. After Victor Wembanyama suffered a season-ending injury last February, the Spurs endured a difficult season which finished with a 34-48 record, good only for the 13th spot in the Western Conference.</p><p>With Gregg Popovich replaced by Mitch Johnson, the new era will seemingly begin with a new name entering the fray. ESPN has put out specific trade scenarios for both Kevin Durant and the Greek Freak, <a href="https://www.espn.in/nba/story/_/id/45526277/2025-nba-draft-san-antonio-spurs-keep-no-2-pick-options" rel="noopener">with both propositions making use</a> of the Spurs’ immense draft capital.</p><p>The proposed Giannis Antetokounmpo trade sends Keldon Johnson, Harrison Barnes, Jeremy Sochan, and a trove of draft picks to Milwaukee. This includes the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, a 2026 first-round pick, a 2028 first-round pick, a 2030 first-round pick, and a 2031 swap. Eye-watering, indeed, but that is undoubtedly the kind of package that Giannis Antetokounmpo will command.</p><p>On the other hand, ESPN also put together a more affordable package the Spurs can offer to the Suns in exchange for Durant. This one sees Malaki Branham, Blake Wesley, Harrison Barnes, Keldon Johnson, and two key picks head to Phoenix. The picks in question are this year’s No. 14 selection, as well as a 2027 unprotected pick via Atlanta.</p><p>Both the scenarios go a long way in transforming the Spurs into immediate championship contenders. Durant, now 36, has an expiring contract Phoenix is looking to get rid of, considering <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/phoenix-suns/suns-rumors-the-key-bradley-beal-reason-kevin-durant-will-be-traded">Bradley Beal’s no-trade clause</a>. The Spurs will gain a proven scorer they can rely on without sacrificing their other young talent such as Devin Vassell.</p><p>However, going for Giannis would mean multiple young players leaving the Spurs, even if this ESPN proposition protects Vassell. Antetokounmpo is only 30, and will form an eye-watering frontcourt with Spurs’ other generational star, Wemby. The cost will be three potential starters, and will be a bold move to kickstart the post-Popovich era.</p><p>However, this trade scenario remains purely speculative, especially considering <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/milwaukee-bucks/bucks-news-giannis-antetokounmpo-seemingly-confirms-return-milwaukee">Giannis has signalled his desire to stay in Milwaukee</a>. Additionally, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-rumors-the-current-trade-plan-for-no-2-pick-in-2025-nba-draft">the Spurs own the No. 2 overall pick</a> in this year’s draft, all of which is a likely sign of good things to come in San Antonio.</p><p>But if they want to trade for Durant, the Spurs<a href="https://www.youtube.com/live/X7vT-ROFBts?si=cRT35-nM3w5RzSVt&amp;t=3790" rel="noopener"> will potentially have to</a> trade either Castle or the No. 2 pick, sacrificing some of the long-term potential for short-term gain.</p><p>“I think I’ve got some news,” former Spurs front-office member Kirk Goldsberry said on the ‘Zach Lowe Show.’ “I know our friends in San Antonio think the price [for Durant] is too high, and the original discussions including the number-two pick and/or Stephon Castle are not going very well on the Spurs end of the telephone, I can tell you that. Everybody loves Kevin Durant, even though he’s 36, soon to be 37, but the Phoenix Suns, my understanding is, Zach Lowe, they’re asking for a little too much.”</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>While the Spurs have not been hesitant to add older talent to their generally young roster — San Antonio signed 39-year-old Chris Paul as a free agent and traded for 32-year-old Harrison Barnes last summer — it would seem they are not <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-roster-building-strategy-victor-wenbanyama-differs-from-the-past">ready to part with young talent while doing so.</a></p><p>Castle, the fourth pick in last year’s draft, averaged 15 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists per game, and would seem to be a valuable piece to the Spurs’ future, considering his skill and 6-foot-6-inch frame. In combination with Victor Wembanyama, the 7-foot-3 unicorn, Castle proved effective as a rookie despite starting just over half of the 81 games he played.</p><p>Durant, one of the best and most consistent scorers in NBA history, would likely fit well with Castle and Wembanyama, neither of whom is an especially adept three-point shooter. While Wembanyama improved from his rookie season from beyond the arc, he shot slightly below average (35.2%) on threes. However, the Suns are still trying to do right by Durant, as the 36-year-old star (soon to be 37 years of age come September) reportedly gave his list of preferred destinations — a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/nba-rumors-heat-rockets-spurs-named-kevin-durant-preferred-trade-destinations">three-team list consisting of the Houston Rockets, San Antonio Spurs, and Miami Heat</a>.</p><p>But among those three teams, Durant reportedly has his favorite. According to Sam Amick of The Athletic, the Suns star <a href="https://x.com/TheAthletic/status/1934804155136397615" rel="noopener">“specifically wants”</a> to play for the Spurs. This would <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/why-spurs-trading-for-kevin-durant-makes-more-sense-than-giannis-antetokounmpo">make San Antonio a powerhouse</a> yet again, as a core consisting of De’Aaron Fox, Victor Wembanyama, and Durant should be good enough to compete, even in a loaded Western Conference.</p><p>Alas, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/nba-rumors-why-spurs-arent-currently-a-kevin-durant-trade-match-for-suns">Suns haven’t yet been impressed</a> with the reported offer the Spurs have put on the table. While they have been willing to dangle Devin Vassell, who is a quality piece at only 24 years of age, they have been reluctant to include the likes of Stephon Castle and Jeremy Sochan (among others) all while refusing to put the second overall pick of the 2025 NBA Draft on the table at all.</p><p>Thus far, the offers for Durant being underwhelming should not come as a surprise. The Suns don’t have much leverage in any scenario (Durant is in the final year of his deal, and everyone following the NBA knows that they are looking to hit a reset button of sorts after a disappointing 2024-25 season), so any trade will have to take some time to materialize.</p><h2><b>Suns, Kevin Durant embroiled in leverage standoff</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Kevin-Durant-of-the-Phoenix-Suns-2.jpg"><figcaption>Joe Camporeale-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>While the Suns won’t be limiting themselves to just those three potential trade partners, Durant’s unwillingness to commit to the other 26 teams will make it difficult for them to justify giving up the assets bringing in Durant via trade will require. For instance, The Athletic reported that the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/minnesota-timberwolves/timberwolves-rumors-minnesotas-stance-amid-kevin-durants-disinterest">Minnesota Timberwolves have been in hot pursuit of Durant</a>, but the veteran star is not willing to commit there, which makes the Timberwolves a bit hesitant to pull the trigger.</p><p>It’s all a matter of who blinks first between Durant and the Suns. For one, the Suns will want to get as much of a return as possible for Durant, and that is easier to pull off in an offseason trade. The latest buzz suggests that both the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs are jockeying for one of the league’s rising prospects.</p><p>Cedric Coward out of Washington State is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/2025-nba-draft-big-board-4-0-ace-bailey-vj-edgecombe-questions-latest-intel">being named as one to watch</a> for the Thunder and Spurs in the NBA Draft, according to insider Brett Siegel. Reports indicate that teams feel Coward is the type of rookie who can help a playoff team immediately. The word is that the 6-foot-6 guard/forward is one of the most pro-ready prospects entering the draft.</p><p>“Multiple lottery teams have expressed interest in Cedric Coward. Keep an eye on the Oklahoma City Thunder being a destination for Coward, should they actually use this pick on a non-international prospect. Plenty of lottery teams have expressed interest in Cedric Coward, sources said. He has drawn interest as high as the [New Orleans] Pelicans with the seventh pick, as well as Houston.</p><p>“While he did not play much this season due to a shoulder injury, teams have been enamored with Coward’s fitness, athleticism, and high IQ throughout the pre-draft process. There are not many limitations to his game, and Coward is viewed as a wing who can contribute to a playoff team right away, much like how Jaylen Wells impacted the [Memphis] Grizzlies this past season. The [San Antoino] Spurs and Thunder are two teams worth mentioning as potential destinations for Coward.”</p><p>Coward was only able to play in six games last season for the Washington State Cougars. However, his career numbers are solid throughout his time in college. Additionally, he looked like a true star in those six games he played for the Cougars. He cannot say the same about his staff, however. Multiple teams are taking a hard look at the Mavs’ bench this offseason, threatening to bring about more change in a franchise that is still adjusting after trading Luka Doncic.</p><p>Kidd surely wants to maintain some continuity, but he could see <a href="https://marcstein.substack.com/p/sunday-best-the-latest-on-kevin-durant?utm_source=post-email-title&amp;publication_id=392205&amp;post_id=166004510&amp;utm_campaign=email-post-title&amp;isFreemail=false&amp;r=39f60&amp;triedRedirect=true&amp;utm_medium=email" rel="noopener">as many as three assistants walk out the door</a> for another job in the near future, per NBA correspondent Marc Stein.</p><p>Memphis Grizzlies HC Tuomas Iisalo is considering Jared Dudley to be his top guy on a squad that has already significantly altered its identity following Sunday’s <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/memphis-grizzlies/grizzlies-ja-morant-shares-tough-reaction-desmond-bane-trade">Desmond Bane blockbuster</a>. Reigning Coach of the Year Kenny Atkinson also has the 14-year NBA player in mind for the same role on the Cleveland Cavaliers.</p><p>Sean Sweeney, who is currently Kidd’s No. 1, is in the running to join Mitch Johnson’s staff with the San Antonio Spurs. He first worked under Kidd on the Brooklyn Nets more than a decade ago, so navigating his possible departure could be challenging.</p><p>Additionally, Stein reports that the Orlando Magic are pursuing Mavericks player development coach God Shammgod, who spent a few years working with head coach Jamahl Mosley while the two were both assistants in Dallas. If fans turn off their natural biases, they could see why each assistant would consider making a move.</p><h2><b>Will the Mavericks have to pivot?</b></h2><p>Dudley can climb the coaching ranks by joining either Iisalo or Atkinson. Aiding the Grizzlies in a successful transitional phase or helping the Cavs finally break through in the playoffs would each look mighty impressive on a future job application. Sweeney can take one step closer to a HC position himself if he enjoys a momentous run with Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs. And Shammgod can gamble on the Magic becoming a long-term force in the Eastern Conference by reconnecting with his old friend.</p><p>Dallas has a talented roster and a potential generational talent on the way, but it is not necessarily an immediate launching pad to prosperity. Anthony Davis weathered injury troubles as soon as he arrived in town, and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-kyrie-irving-inside-look-acl-injury-recovery">Kyrie Irving is recovering</a> from a torn ACL. Therefore, the squad’s competitive standing for next season is mired in uncertainty.</p><p>Moreover, the residual effects of the Luka Doncic saga could incentivize employees to remove themselves from the organization if a favorable opportunity presents itself.</p><p>Based on their own recent actions, it seems like the Mavericks are anticipating changes to their coaching staff. Jason Kidd is welcoming in longtime assistant Jay Triano, who operated as an associate head coach with the Sacramento Kings last season. His experience may prove especially vital if Sweeney departs. As the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/nba-rumors-heat-rockets-spurs-named-kevin-durant-preferred-trade-destinations">Spurs have been mentioned as a preferred destination</a> for Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant, the latest report detailed what the plan will be in regards to the pick.</p><p>In the latest column by The Athletic’s Sam Amick, Jon Krawczynski, and Kelly Iko, it speaks about the potential spots for Durant and the obstacles that could be in the way. With Phoenix likely wanting draft capital for the star, it seems likely that a deal with San Antonio won’t include the No. 2 pick, as<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6426397/2025/06/14/kevin-durant-suns-trade-nba-rumors-wolves-rockets-spurs/?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=twhq&amp;source=twitterhq" rel="noopener"> “all signs”</a> point to the team keeping it, with the likelihood that the player selected is Rutgers’ Dylan Harper.</p><p>“There’s also the question of the No. 2 pick. All signs up until this point indicate that San Antonio intends to hold on to the selection, league sources say, and keep that pick out of any trade discussions. The 14th pick, however, is available, league sources said. Though The Athletic questions the fit, Harper is the “next-best talent” after Cooper Flagg, who seems undoubtedly going to the Dallas Mavericks with the No. 1 overall pick.</p><p>“There are a few fit questions that naturally arise given the presence of Fox and Castle, but Harper — who averaged 19.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game as a freshman — is the next-best talent on the board after Flagg,” Iko wrote. “But first things first, the Spurs and every other Durant suitor must decide how badly they want him.”</p><p>Iko isn’t the only one questioning the fit with Harper, which is why some, like ESPN’s Jonathan Givony, mentioned that San Antonio <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45470775/2025-nba-mock-draft-debating-30-round-1-picks-need-value-cooper-flagg" rel="noopener">should pick Duke’s Kon Knueppel</a>, a bona fide, talented shooter that they need.</p><p>“Surrounding Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, and De’Aaron Fox with high-feel, dynamic perimeter shooters is a major priority for the front office this offseason, and no player in this draft fits that bit better than Knueppel,” Givony said. “He’s the draft’s best shooter, capable of shooting off movement coming off screen, but also is a solid defender and playmaker who plays a selfless, highly competitive style.”</p><p>It remains to be seen who the Spurs pick as the NBA Draft is on June 25.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
