Thus far, Dalton Knecht and Bronny James are the only new additions to the Lakers roster, and as time ticks away, more and more free agents are signing deals by the hour. The Lakers remain <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-heat-favored-over-lakers-to-sign-demar-derozan">linked to Southern California native</a> DeMar DeRozan, however, their best bet to make meaningful roster upgrades may come via a trade.</p><p>As for who the Lakers could be setting their sights on in a potential deal, The Athletic’s Jovan Buha reported that there are four three-and-D wings linked to LA as possible trade targets, including one player who Lakers fans — in addition to LeBron James and Anthony Davis — are incredibly familiar with.</p><p>“Four names that have been consistently linked to the Lakers on the trade market have been Jerami Grant, Kyle Kuzma, Dorian Finney-Smith, and Cam Johnson,” Jovan Buha of The Athletic <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4z8hu-MvEs0" rel="noopener">reported on Wednesday</a>. “And as I recently reported at The Athletic, I’ve heard that the Lakers have held trade talks with Portland, Brooklyn, and Utah among other teams in recent days. So the Portland and Brooklyn talks would align with those players being on the trade market, and at this point it’s a matter of haggling over picks and which players are involved.”</p><p>LA will be hesitant to part ways with any 1st Round picks for players of this caliber, which in turn limits their ability to get a deal done. However, as Portland, Brooklyn, Utah and Washington all prepare to tank away the 2024-25 season with a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cooper-flagg-headlines-2025-nba-draft-prospects-nets-tank-for">strong 2025 draft class incoming</a>, each of those teams could see the incentive of worsening their rosters ahead of the season. Could a package of D’Angelo Russell and Jalen Hood-Schifino get the job done for Kuzma? Not only would Russell come off the books at the end of next season, removing Kuzma from one of the league’s worst rosters would seemingly better Washington’s chances of landing the #1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.</p><p>Kuzma has averaged 20.2 points, 7.4 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game over the last three seasons with the Washington Wizards. Moving Kuzma to Los Angeles or otherwise would allow Washington to find more minutes for young forwards such as Bilal Coulibaly, Corey Kispert, and Patrick Baldwin Jr.</p><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Kyle-Kuzma-getting-a-shot-up-over-Anthony-Davis-1024x683.jpg"><figcaption>© Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><h2><b>Are we heading toward a Kyle Kuzma-Lakers reunion? </b></h2><p>Given the Lakers’ reported (and justified) reluctance in including any future 1st round picks in a possible deal for Kyle Kuzma — or Grant, Finney-Smith or Cam Johnson — the chances of a reunion are more unlikely than likely. The cruel irony here is that the Lakers should’ve never dealt Kuzma away in the first place. In four seasons in LA, Kuzma averaged 15.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.9 assists. During the Lakers run to the 2020 NBA Title, Kuz averaged 10 points and 3 rebounds in 23 minutes per game.</p><p>After a 1st round exit in the 2021 NBA Playoffs, the Lakers decided to reshuffle their roster in a major way, turning Kuzma, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Montrezl Harrell into Russell Westbrook. Westbrook’s Lakers stint was as tumultuous as it was brief. The fit with LeBron James and Anthony Davis never worked, and after just a season and a half, the Lakers were forced to include a 2027 1st round pick just to offload Westbrook to Utah.</p><p>A return to the Lakerland would likely be a welcome change of scenery for Kuzma, who after making postseason trips each of his final two seasons in LA, has been toiling away on Wizards teams that have won 85 games combined over the last three seasons.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Most teams with cap space have also spent money on the players they deem are perfect fits for their roster. Thus, for teams still looking to bolster their roster, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-wizards-want-another-2024-1st-round-pick-amid-kyle-kuzma-trade-buzz">pulling off trades</a> appears to be the way to go. In particular, the Washington Wizards, which came so close to selling at the 2024 trade deadline, could draw a ton of interest for combo forward Kyle Kuzma.</p><p>Kuzma, back in February, was drawing a ton of trade interest, with the Dallas Mavericks being one of the teams that was in pursuit of the 28-year old forward. In the end, the Wizards kept him — but it appears as though this decision will be beneficial for Washington moving forward. They are now <a href="https://hoopshype.com/lists/nba-rumors-lauri-markkanen-trade-talks-demar-derozan-kyle-kuzma-lakers-knicks-76ers/" rel="noopener">looking to demand</a> multiple first-round picks in any Kuzma trade, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, thanks in large part to the returns Dejounte Murray and Mikal Bridges netted the Atlanta Hawks and Brooklyn Nets, respectively.</p><p>Murray, as one would recall, got the Hawks two first-round picks as well as former lottery pick Dyson Daniels in return. For good measure, the Hawks also received Larry Nance Jr., someone that they could flip to a team in need of some frontcourt depth.</p><p>And then there’s the godfather offer that the New York Knicks put on the table for Mikal Bridges. The Knicks gave up five first-round picks, a pick swap, and a second-round pick; this was simply an offer that the Nets couldn’t refuse.</p><p>Alas, the Wizards may have to temper their expectations. Kyle Kuzma, for as talented of a player as he is, may not be as appealing of a trade target to contending teams as Murray and Bridges are. But with the lack of options left in free agency, the Wizards could very well be in position to receive a huge trade return.</p><h2><b>Breaking down Kyle Kuzma’s trade value</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Kyle-Kuzma-of-the-Wizards.jpg"></figure><p>Compared to Dejounte Murray and Mikal Bridges, Kyle Kuzma is the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sources-wizards-kyle-kuzma-trade-asking-price-high-suitors-emerging">worst trade asset</a> among the three. This is not to say that Kuzma is a bad player who cannot help a winning team. On the contrary; he is a solid rebounder, a versatile scorer, and on the right team with proper coaching, he could be a helpful piece on the defensive end as well. He provides offensive upside and matchup versatility in a 6’9 frame.</p><p>The reigning champion Boston Celtics have shown that having positional flexibility is crucial in any team’s bid to win the Larry O’Brien trophy. Kuzma definitely has the size to be playoff-viable, which is very important to take into consideration for any contending team that will be giving up future first-round picks to acquire his services.</p><p>However, Kyle Kuzma’s pedigree pales in comparison to that of Murray and Bridges. Murray, for one, is a former All-Star. He is also a better ballhandler, playmaker, and shooter than Kuzma. Perhaps on a team with more offensive weapons, Murray could rediscover the All-Defensive Team version of himself following a few rough years on the defensive end.</p><p>Meanwhile, Bridges, despite struggling as the first option for the Nets, has proven in the past that he can be a high-level complementary player on a winning team. The Phoenix Suns flourished when Bridges was there, making it to the NBA Finals in 2021 and tallying the best record in the NBA in 2022. Bridges is as good of a perimeter defender as it can get, and his experience as a first option in Brooklyn means he now has more juice off the dribble whenever teams zero in on Jalen Brunson and Julius Randle.</p><p>It is fair to wonder just how impactful Kyle Kuzma will be in a much limited role. With the Wizards, he was free to commandeer the offense in ways he won’t be allowed to should he join a contending team. Kuzma is a below-average three-point shooter and he is ridiculously turnover-prone for someone who isn’t an elite playmaker. But shot-creation at his size as well as helpfulness on the glass makes Kuzma a helpful player nonetheless, especially when his contract is very desirable to other teams.</p><h2><b>Which teams are potential trade partners for the Wizards?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/DeAaron-Fox-and-Domantas-Sabonis-discuss-the-game-plan.jpg"></figure><p>The Sacramento Kings have been on the prowl for an upgrade for a while now, and they continue to be interested in Kyle Kuzma, per reports. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-kings-linked-to-kyle-kuzma-wizards-trade">Kuzma would give the Kings</a> some much-needed offensive shot-creation for a player with prototypical forward size. A squad that would love to have him is the Washington Wizards.</p><p>There have been a lot of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-mavericks-pistons-tim-hardaway-jr-trade">suitors knocking on the Mavericks’ door</a> for Tim Hardaway Jr. He has reportedly drawn the interest of the Los Angeles Lakers, and Detroit Pistons. <a href="https://twitter.com/TheSteinLine/status/1806088413981839685" rel="noopener">The latest contender</a> in trying to acquire him surfaced — the Wizards, per Marc Stein.</p><p>A lot of this has to do with the great relationship that the Mavericks and Wizards front office has. They just recently worked together during the trade deadline. Daniel Gafford was traded for Richaun Holmes and the 2024 first-round pick which originated from the Oklahoma City Thunder. So, this partnership could spill over to the offseason with Hardaway Jr. as the main trade asset that the Mavericks need to let go of.</p><p>After all, the veteran could still produce solid numbers given the right minutes. He notched 14.4 points on a 40.2% clip from all three levels of scoring when the Luka Doncic-led squad still used him a lot. His three-point acumen is also still alive and strong. Those shots from beyond the arc are still seeing the bottom of the net 35.3% of the time.</p><p>Not to mention, the biggest asset that he has over any other player is his durability. Hardaway Jr. played in 79 games for Jason Kidd’s Mavericks last season. Other than that, his production was not fit for the schemes that the Mavericks were running. Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic have just playing a different brand of basketball since then.</p><p>In fact, Hardaway Jr.’s production took a big hit after the trade deadline. He only scored 8.6 points on a 35.9% clip. It is by no means great but that number took an ever deeper plunge in the postseason. The Mavericks forward’s numbers were nearly cut in half as he only contributed 4.4 points to the squad.</p><p>The Mavericks player is not the only one taking issue with all of this. Even his father, the legendary point guard who revolutionized flashy moves in the league, outlined his frustration. One time, the older Hardaway even had this to say in response to a fan claiming that they would trade his son this offseason.</p><p>“Yes, they are. We want to have a new opportunity to shine. We didn’t like what happened, We are ready to go,” he wrote.</p><p>The Wizards do need some veteran guys to surround their very young core. As the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/tag/nba-trade-deadline" rel="noopener">trade deadline</a> dawns, though, that seemingly inevitable reality apparently hasn’t caused the Wizards to lower their “high asking price” in a potential deal for the veteran forward. Will the Sacramento Kings meet it regardless, filling a longstanding hole in the team’s foundational nucleus next to De’Aaron Fox, Domantas Sabonis and Keegan Murray?</p><p>Sacramento’s interest in paying top dollar for Kuzma will reportedly go a long way toward informing his future beyond February 8th. Though he remains “at the top” of the Kings’ trade deadline wish list, Washington is “comfortable” retaining Kuzma <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sources-bulls-demar-derozan-warriors-plans-nba-trade-deadline-rumors" rel="noopener">past the trade deadline</a>, according to ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel.</p><p>“There has been continued dialogue across the league suggesting that Kyle Kuzma is at the top of the Sacramento Kings target list. While they did explore the possibility of pursuing Kuzma with the Wizards in January, no real deal materialized,” Siegel reported on Tuesday. “The Kings have first-round draft picks in 2026, 2028, and 2030 that can be dealt, although they can’t trade any pick until two years after their obligation to the Atlanta Hawks is fulfilled. The Hawks own the Kings’ 2024 first-round pick with top-14 protections. Pertaining to Kuzma, the Wizards still maintain their high asking price. Washington is more than comfortable holding onto the 28-year-old past the NBA trade deadline, especially since he is a player they still envision as a focal point in their rebuild.”</p><h2><b>Should Kings pay up for Kyle Kuzma at trade deadline?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/NBA_rumors_Kings_a__fan__of_Kyle_Kuzma_ahead_of_NBA_Trade_Deadline.webp"></figure><p>Competing agendas from teams, competing front offices and player agents must be taken into account when assessing the viability of all player-movement rumors, but especially those leading up to the trade deadline. Recent intel on Kuzma suggests Washington has not only put a steep price tag on acquiring, but the team also isn’t <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-wizards-not-looking-trade-kyle-kuzma-before-deadline" rel="noopener">actively trying to move him</a> due to the mutual interest of both parties continuing their partnership past 2023-24.</p><p>“Kyle Kuzma in Washington, they are not trying to trade him, he’s happy, listen they love Kyle Kuzma,” ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported on The Woj Podo. “He really likes that organization, signed that extension this summer. He loves being in DC, he’s not angling to get out of there.”</p><p>What benefit would Michael Winger, Will Dawkins and the Wizards’ front office glean from telegraphing otherwise? Pretty much every win-now team in basketball could use an experienced forward who theoretically doesn’t take anything off the table on either side of the ball. Kuzma would definitely be an upgrade on Harrison Barnes next to Murray on the wing, and his declining long-term contract isn’t nearly as onerous from a financial standpoint as it seems on the surface.</p><p>But giving up a pair of first-round picks for Kuzma would leave the Kings bereft of future assets moving forward, and he certainly isn’t the star who would help them level up toward top-tier contention in the Western Conference. Kuzma may not even be the impact role player in Sacramento that Washington’s asking price suggests.</p><p>He’s hitting an ugly <a href="https://www.nba.com/stats/player/1628398/shots-dash?Season=2023-24" rel="noopener">33.5%</a> on catch-and-shoot triples, per NBA.com/stats, right in line with career norms that paint Kuzma as more of a streaky three-point shooter than reliable one. The 28-year-old is also ill-suited to be a good team’s best wing defender, a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kings-news-mike-brown-reveals-secret-to-keegan-murray-defensive-growth" rel="noopener">role in which Murray has turned heads</a> this season but remains less than ideal for both he and the Kings—especially as the sophomore’s usage projects to trend up going forward.</p><p>Adding Kuzma would make Sacramento better this season and going forward. But Mike Brown’s team sports a net rating of just +0.5, hardly indicating it’s just one solid starter at forward away from competing for a championship come June.</p><p>If a pair of first-rounders really is what it will take for them to pry Kuzma from Washington at the trade deadline, wouldn’t the Kings be better off playing out the season’s remainder, re-assessing the roster and trade market this summer and <i>then</i> make another run at Kuzma rather than pushing most of their chips in right now? Sacramento’s ownership might be too starved for playoff success to take that more patient, prudent approach into the offseason.</p><p>Keep close tabs on Kuzma’s status over the next 48 hours. Denver is said to be looking for backcourt reinforcements despite limited trade maneuverability, per NBA insider Marc Stein. At the moment, one name that the Nuggets could possibly land is Delon Wright.</p><p>The Washington Wizards guard is currently averaging 4.4 points and 2.8 assists per game. Speculation is the franchise is potentially showing interest in Kyle Kuzma and Tyus Jones of the Washington Wizards. There’s even a dream scenario where Sacramento could land both players.</p><p>General manager Monte McNair has reportedly been taking a look at Kuzma throughout the season <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sources-how-grizzlies-rockets-steven-adams-trade-impacts-2024-nba-trade-deadline" rel="noopener">as a potential trade target</a>, according to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints. If a trade were to occur, the Kings would be more interested in dealing Kevin Huerter and Davion Mitchell away instead of Harrison Barnes.</p><p>“Monte McNair has once again taken a look at Kuzma, a player he has shown interest in before. Sacramento would much rather discuss trade opportunities centered around Kevin Huerter and Davion Mitchell than Harrison Barnes at this point, sources said. The Kings are said to be searching for a defensive-minded wing.”</p><p>Although neither Kyle Kuzma or Tyus Jones fit that defensive-wing mold, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kings-news-domantas-sabonis-obliterates-grizzlies-unreal-20-20-feat-wilt-chamberlain" rel="noopener">the Kings could</a> be in the mix of landing both players. Siegel claims Kuzma and Jones would be a great fit in Sacramento’s lineup to help De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis. On top of that, the deal makes sense financially. Albeit, Sacramento would likely have to add some draft capital to make the deal go through to interest the Wizards.</p><p>“Both players would provide Sacramento with the secondary stability that they have been lacking around De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis. The $37.7 million combined salaries of Barnes, Huerter, and Mitchell would almost equal the $39.5 million of Kuzma and Jones combined. The Kings would not be able to trade an outright first-round pick until 2026.”</p><p>It’ll be interesting to see if Sacramento can get a deal done. The Kings aim to make a playoff appearance in back-to-back seasons. With a 9-38 record at present and the trade deadline only a week away, it’s looking rather likely that the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-wizards-to-explore-kyle-kuzma-trade-deadline-market" rel="noopener">Wizards sell off</a> some of their veteran pieces, including Kyle Kuzma, Tyus Jones, and Daniel Gafford, as all of them can help contending teams.</p><p>Nonetheless, the word on the street is that the Wizards are looking for an exorbitant return for Kuzma in any given trade. Their price, according to the rumor mill, is as expensive as two first-round picks, which may be too big of an ask. However, David Aldridge and Josh Robbins of The Athletic point out that that <a href="https://theathletic.com/5240031/2024/01/31/washington-wizards-trade-deadline-intel/" rel="noopener">notion is “overblown”</a> and that the Wizards are not asking for the world in any prospective Kuzma deal.</p><p>“League sources maintain Washington has been holding out for two first-round picks for Kuzma, though team sources indicate that is somewhat overblown. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle,” the article reads.</p><p>Kyle Kuzma may not have much of a trade market if the Wizards do indeed insist on two first-round picks in return. Kuzma has been racking up the stats, averaging 22.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 4.3 assists on 45/33/79 shooting splits in 47 games thus far this season, but he profiles as more of a third option on a team with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/evaluating-best-kyle-kuzma-trade-destinations-2024-nba-trade-deadline" rel="noopener">serious contending aspirations</a>.</p><p>When teams give up two or more first-round picks, they expect at least an All-Star-caliber player in return. Kuzma, as good of a player as he is, falls short of that distinction. Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby started it off with the Toronto Raptors. Now, other teams are ready to follow suit. One organization that has already made moves is the Washington Wizards. However, they are still not done as they are trying to form a squad that may get them wins in the near future. A person that the Will Dawkins-led front office could be trading is Kyle Kuzma. They also have an idea of what the <a href="https://marcstein.substack.com/p/the-latest-from-nba-trade-season-48a" rel="noopener">return would look like</a>.</p><p>Marc Stein reported that the Wizards have specific needs out of a Kyle Kuzma trade.</p><p>“At least two first-round picks for Kuzma. The implication is they will be seeking higher-quality picks than Toronto received from Indiana in the Pascal Siakam trade,” are what the Wizards are looking for<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-kings-a-fan-kyle-kuzma-ahead-of-nba-trade-deadline" rel="noopener"> in exchange for Kuzma.</a></p><p>Notably, a majority of the picks that were exchanged for Siakam were first-rounders in the 2024 NBA Draft. They also got a conditional 2026 first-round pick. In addition, the Pacers gave up Bruce Brown, Kira Lewis, and Jordan Nwora.</p><p>There have been teams that were rumored to be interested in <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-mavericks-kyle-kuzma-jerami-grant-trade" rel="noopener">trading with the Wizards.</a> The Sacramento Kings have made it clear that they want a forward who is able to help them climb up the Western Conference standings. Steve Kerr’s Warriors, the Dallas Mavericks, and even the San Antonio Spurs have reportedly been interested in the Wizards forward as well. Dallas has been linked to a number of centers around the NBA as they attempt to strengthen the position behind Dereck Lively II. Of course, the Mavericks have also been <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-mavericks-kyle-kuzma-jerami-grant-trade" rel="noopener">mentioned as a potential trade destination</a> for Wizards forward Kyle Kuzma.</p><h2><b>Mavericks, Knicks in similar positions ahead of NBA trade deadline</b></h2><p>The Knicks and Mavericks are in similar positions. New York is currently 25-17 and in fifth place in the Eastern Conference, while the Mavs hold a 24-18 record and are sixth in the West. Both teams appear to be serious contenders but would benefit from making a trade or two.</p><p>The Knicks <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/grading-og-anunoby-rj-barrett-immanuel-quickley-knicks-raptors-trade" rel="noopener">already acquired OG Anunoby</a> from the Toronto Raptors. So making a depth move, such as trading for Gafford, makes sense.</p><p>As for the Mavericks, they have yet to make a big trade. Dallas’ roster is already impressive but injuries have played an unfortunate role in their 2023-24 season up to this point. Head coach Jason Kidd <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-news-jason-kidd-dallas-2023-24-season-injury" rel="noopener">believes in the Mavs’ potential</a>, but understands the importance of the team staying healthy.</p><p>With all of that being said, New York and Dallas will have big decisions to make ahead of the NBA trade deadline.
