Moving forward, here is a <a href="https://www.pff.com/draft/nfl-mock-draft-simulator?ref=0df7efd5-7331-457d-b533-5bf4e8a6d6d5" rel="noopener">seven-round 2025</a> NFL mock draft, according to the Pro Football Focus simulator.</p><p>After a 10-7 season that netted a playoff berth, the Broncos want to take the next step and become a true Super Bowl contender. That means they must make the most of their early picks in the draft. They sit in the No. 20 spot in the first round. Also, they have needs at running back, wide receiver, center, and the interior of the defensive line.</p><p>Here’s what the simulator spit out for them.</p><h2><b>Broncos get T Josh Simmons in Round 1</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Ohio-State-OT-Josh-Simmons.jpg"><figcaption>Jacob Musselman-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>OK. Here we go. Epic fail for the simulator once again. The Broncos have four needs. Picking the Ohio State standout addressed none of them. It’s not a good pick.</p><p>However, Simmons is <a href="https://www.nfl.com/prospects/josh-simmons/32005349-4d24-8456-5aa5-20aab1d301b0" rel="noopener">a good player</a>, according to nfl.com. He projects as a plus starter.</p><p>“An athletic tackle prospect with adequate size and length, Simmons has experience starting on both sides,” Lance Zierlein wrote. “He suffered a season-ending knee injury in mid-October, so his recovery and timetable for return will need to be vetted. He’s a consistently fluid mover both inside the box and when asked to play in space, and he has the slide quickness to compete against NFL edge speed.</p><p>“(Simmons is) more positional than powerful in completing his run-blocking tasks, but he can fit into all schemes. Improved hand placement and latch-in strength can help better control opponents in both the run and pass games. He can still be susceptible to twists and counters in pass pro, so he might need a year to continue honing his craft in that area before he is ready to take on NFL pocket hunters.”</p><p>The Broncos had two shots at a much better pick. They could have taken wide receiver Emeka Egbuka (Ohio State) or defensive lineman Walter Nolen of Mississippi.</p><h2><b>A free safety comes off the board in Round 2</b></h2><p>It’s beginning to look like the simulator doesn’t care about the Broncos’ needs. Let’s just draft willy-nilly and pick the highest player on the board! Weeeeee!</p><p>Safety Xavier Watts of Notre Dame is another <a href="https://www.nfl.com/prospects/xavier-watts/32005741-5483-0896-532a-ecb5497b9d7f" rel="noopener">potential plus starter</a>.</p><p>“Safety with the versatility and ball skills to make plays from a variety of alignments,” Zierlein wrote. “Watts plays with rare feel and instincts on the back-end, allowing him to range over the top in single-high or read and drive on throws as a split safety. He lined up over the slot at times in college, but he might not have the man-cover talent to do that as a pro.</p><p>“His ball skills and production are intoxicating, but his run support and tackling are quite sobering. Watts lacks pursuit discipline and fails to break down in space, leading to open-field misses and back-breaking mistakes. The tackling lowers his floor some, but I expect him to drift toward his ceiling because he’s so good on the back-end.”</p><p>The best pick here would have been Iowa State wide receiver Jayden Higgins, or Miami wideout Xavier Restrepo. The epic fails continue.</p><h2><b>Broncos finally land a WR in Round 3</b></h2><p>Good luck with the second-best wide receiver coming out of Iowa State. Jaylin Noel won’t be <a href="https://www.nfl.com/prospects/jaylin-noel/32004e4f-4537-8255-74e9-bfa22151ef3a" rel="noopener">in the same neighborhood</a> as Higgins, Restrepo, or Egbuka.</p><p>“Noel’s primarily a slot receiver but has enough size and speed to kick outside in a pinch,” Zierlein wrote. “His routes can be a little unfocused but that’s correctable with coaching. What can’t be coached is his consistent play speed. He can accelerate and separate from turns and stems and tends to uncover on cross-country routes.</p><p>“The catch focus can be inconsistent, but he is willing to mix it up in the middle of the field and is a natural after the ball is in his hands. Noel’s upside and punt/kick return value could make him a Day 2 pick with the potential to develop into a starter.”</p><p>The Broncos had little choice with getting a wide receiver here. But it meant they had to pass on defensive lineman Vernon Broughton of Texas.</p><h2><b>RB Jaydon Blue of Texas goes in Round 4</b></h2><p>Another neglected skill position finally gets a look with Blue. It makes a little more sense to wait for a running back because the draft is deep with them. And the ultra-fast Blue could eventually <a href="https://www.nfl.com/prospects/jaydon-blue/3200424c-5532-6186-a82d-38322b898c1f" rel="noopener">become a starter</a>.</p><p>“Blue played behind very good backs, so his carry count is lower, but he clearly has talent,” Zierlein wrote. “He’s a narrow-hipped, linear runner with good speed to threaten wide and attack downfield out of the backfield. He has adequate wiggle in the open field but lacks base strength to break tackles.</p><p>“Blue’s lack of tempo and vision inside gets him behind schedule and could limit how teams use him as a ball-carrier. While he can be labeled a “change-of-pace slasher,” his real value will revolve around his ability to mismatch linebackers and threaten defenses as a receiver out of the backfield.”</p><h2><b>Round 6 nets three picks for Broncos</b></h2><p>Another running back got the nod with Jordan James of Oregon. And the running back run continued with Ollie Gordon II of Oklahoma State. The Broncos wrapped up with defensive lineman Zeek Biggers of Georgia Tech.</p><p><i>Overall, the Broncos didn’t address the center position or the defensive line. To <a href="https://x.com/Schultz_Report/status/1906738081564160501" rel="noopener">add to their quarterback room</a>, the Broncos recently signed a former Indianapolis Colts signal-caller to the team, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz.</p><p>“Sources: The Broncos are signing former Colts QB Sam Ehlinger to a 1-year deal. He had multiple offers but chose Denver, seeing the best fit with HC Sean Payton and QBs coach Davis Webb, joining a room with Bo Nix and Jarrett Stidham,” Schultz wrote on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>Ehlinger had been with the Colts for the past three seasons after they drafted him in the sixth round in 2021. He only started for the team three times throughout his tenure, and they were all during the 2022 season. Ehlinger has thrown for 573 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions.</p><p>With the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/colts-news-daniel-jones-free-agency-anthony-richardson-qb-competition">Colts signing Daniel Jones</a>, it makes sense why they didn’t feel the need to bring back Ehlinger, and it seems as if there will be a true quarterback battle between him and Anthony Richardson.</p><p>For the Broncos, Ehlinger comes into a nice situation where he could learn from Sean Payton, who has always been good with quarterbacks throughout his time as a head coach. If you see what he was able to accomplish with Nix in his rookie season, then there should be no doubt he can develop quarterbacks.</p><p>Jarrett Stidham is also a backup on the team, and he and Ehlinger will most likely battle for the QB2 spot when training camp approaches.</p><p>This wasn’t a big free agent move for the Broncos, but it’s obvious that they wanted to add depth to the team and some help behind Nix as he’s set to improve in his sophomore season.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Now, Denver is trying to take it a step further and become a true contender in the AFC.</p><p>While Payton and Nix got a lot of the shine last season, the Denver defense was the best unit on the field at almost all times. The Broncos had one of the top defenses in the league under Vance Joseph and Patrick Surtain II won the Defensive Player of the Year Award after the season. Now, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/49ers-news-desperate-move-losing-dre-greenlaw-broncos">Broncos have brought in Dre Greenlaw</a> and Talanoa Hufanga from the San Francisco 49ers to help out even more on that side of the ball.</p><p>Before Greenlaw made his final decision to sign with the Broncos, the 49ers made what Greenlaw called a “last-ditch effort” to keep him. General manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan flew out to Greenlaw’s home in Texas to <a href="https://www.denverpost.com/2025/03/30/dre-greenlaw-broncos-leaving-49ers/" rel="noopener">try to convince him</a> to come back to the Bay Area, according to Luca Evans of the Denver Post.</p><p>It’s easy to see why the 49ers would want Greenlaw back. He was one of the leaders of this 49ers defense during this era and battled his way back onto the field last year after tearing his Achilles in the Super Bowl in February of 2024. When he did return, Greenlaw looked like his old self, flying downhill and stuffing ball carriers in their tracks.</p><p>Greenlaw played in just two games for the 49ers before going down with another injury, making nine tackles across the pair of contests. However, he exceeded 120 tackles in both 2022 and 2023 despite playing in just 15 games in both seasons.</p><p>Now, those skills will be headed to a Broncos defense that had a weakness at linebacker last season despite their excellence as a unit. If Greenlaw can solidify that group and the Broncos can bring back similar production on the defensive line and in the secondary, they can have the kind of defense that can really trouble the crop of elite quarterbacks in the AFC.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The 61-year-old is best known for leading the New Orleans Saints to a 15-year run of success, culminating in a Super Bowl victory at the conclusion of the 2009 season.</p><p>Making matters even more impressive is that the Saints won nine division titles during his tenure in New Orleans. The Saints had largely been known as a losing franchise prior to Payton’s arrival, winning a division title and a playoff game just once prior to 2006.</p><p>Payton is currently in the process of <a href="https://rg.org/news/football/patrick-surtain-ii-praises-bo-nix-sean-payton-duo-driving-broncos-resurgence" rel="noopener">leading a reloaded Denver Broncos squad</a>, fresh off of their first playoff appearance since the 2015 season. However, Surtain II is no stranger to playing for great coaches, having done so before under the greatest college football head coach of all-time in Nick Saban.</p><p>Surtain II had a prolific career with the Alabama Crimson Tide prior to being selected in the first round in 2021.  He won a National Championship, was named a Unanimous All-American and won SEC Defensive Player of the Year during the 2020 season.</p><h2><b>Patrick Surtain II explains Nick Saban, Sean Payton’s coaching styles</b></h2><p>The three-time Pro Bowler detailed the key difference in the coaches’ styles.</p><p>“I think there’s some similarities,” Surtain II said in a one-on-one interview. “I say Saban is more hands on, he’s going to get at you. He’s going to — not saying Sean doesn’t — but everything’s structured with him with Saban. He built you for that tough grind, those grueling hard days in the summer, those workouts. In his 17 seasons at Alabama, they won at least 12 games in 13 of those seasons.</p><p>“When you get under that experience, I feel like it gets the best out of you for sure,” Surtain II added. “When I was with Saban, you just learn something new each and every day. How he operates, how he’s able to manage the team, how each and every year his teams consistently are in the National Championship game. They win 12-plus games each and every year. Last year, he ran for 1,660 yards and scored 15 touchdowns while adding 38 receptions for 373 yards and two scores. The 6-foot, 220-pound back ran a 4.46 40 at the combine, cementing his status as one of the top backs in the draft.</p><p>That’s no easy feat considering the depth and quality of the 2025 running back class. Tannenbaum believes “You’re going to see over 20 running backs drafted,” per Mason.</p><p>Boise State’s <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/ncaa-football/boise-state-football-news-ashton-jeanty-draws-maurice-jones-drew-comparison-2025-draft-combine">Ashton Jeanty should be the first RB selected</a>. However, it’s unclear where he’ll go in the first round. Still, he’s almost certain to be off the board before the Broncos are on the clock with the 20th pick. But Hampton is expected to be available. And Payton could add a potent offensive weapon capable of taking some pressure off second-year quarterback Bo Nix.</p><p>If Payton believes he’s found his new Alvin Kamara, it would be awfully hard to pass on Hampton. Payton, of course, coached Kamara for five years with the New Orleans Saints. Head coach Sean Payton, a finalist for the Coach of the Year award last season, will collaborate with general manager George Paton on potentially fixing some of the areas that could transform them into a championship contender.</p><p>The Broncos’ biggest strength is the defense. With one of the NFL’s most intimidating cornerbacks in Patrick Surtain II, and one of the best defensive fronts, Denver will be required to shore things up with its scoring. </p><p>Bo Nix made tremendous strides as a rookie quarterback, and the Broncos are very close to having weapons around him that balance things out on both sides of the football.</p><p>One of the <a href="https://www.denverpost.com/2025/03/20/broncos-roster-needs-nfl-draft-2025/" rel="noopener">biggest areas of the roster</a> that the Broncos don’t want to sleep on is the defensive line. While it’s a strength, it’s also a superpower that the organization cannot afford to see regress in 2025, per Parker Gabriel of The Denver Post.</p><p>“This group has a good argument for being the strongest and most complete on the roster. So could Denver also use its first-round pick on a defensive lineman? It’s not crazy, given the talent that could be available at No. 20 and the importance of keeping the front line strong. Allen’s due for a massive extension and Franklin-Myers is entering the final year of his contract. After giving Jones a three-year, $39 million deal, it’s an open question if the Broncos can afford everybody. If not, having a premium young player in a rotational role this year and a bigger role in Year 2 is a reasonable outcome.”</p><p>Bearing this in mind, let’s take a look at who the Broncos’ selected in the latest five-round mock draft at their four current spots, according to PFN’s simulation.</p><h2><b>No. 20 Shavon Revel CB East Carolina</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Shavon-Revel_216f36.jpg"><figcaption>Tanner Pearson-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Broncos have a chance to stoke the flames on defense with a bold first-round pick. Shavon Revel put his explosive skill set to good use at East Carolina over the last three seasons – racking up 70 tackles, 15 pass deflections and three interceptions in 24 appearances.</p><p>While Revel is by no means a “wrong choice” in the first round, it’s possible that Denver’s urgency to improve the offense could outweigh a BPA (best-player available) strategy. (<i>The simulation could have led us astray with this one)</i>. But let’s keep going.</p><p>Revel is <a href="https://www.nfl.com/prospects/shavon-revel-jr./32005245-5642-5416-ac3c-20485f3d0919">coming off</a> a torn ACL from last September, so he would likely be more of a project early in his career. That said, he’s also a player with the upside to blossom into another defensive star by the time the Broncos’ veteran contracts catch up to them.</p><h2><b>No. 51 Isaiah Bond WR Texas</b></h2><p>It’s becoming clear that the Broncos will continue stacking the wideout room with talent in this draft. To what length, who knows? But it’s difficult to see Payton and the front office walking out of Day 1 or Day 2 without a talented route runner.</p><p>Isaiah Bond offers “steal” potential at this stage of the second round. His homerun ability as a sprinter, and quickness across the middle of the field could prove valuable for Nix as a second-year NFL gunslinger.</p><h2><b>No. 85 TreVeyon Henderson RB Ohio State</b></h2><p>If the NFL season started today, the Broncos offense would be rolling with Jaleel McLaughlin and Audric Estime as the two primary running backs. It’s time for Payton to start fresh with a new playmaker. In such a deep class, Denver may see value beyond Round 1.</p><p>The Broncos have been looking for that 1-2 punch that most great teams have, (à la Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley), since the early half of the 2024-25 campaign. A Nix and TreVeyon Henderson QB/RB combo has a nice ring to it.</p><p>Henderson displayed competence as both a runner and receiver during Ohio State football’s national championship journey. He worked effectively in a timeshare with Quinshon Judkins, which accounted for 2,076 rushing yards last year – so the Broncos could tag him as the feature back, while involving McLaughlin and Estime in some capacity.</p><h2><b>No. 122 Danny Stutsman LB Oklahoma</b></h2><p>There’s a chance that the Broncos are eyeing a wide receiver or a running back in the first round. They could also realistically select Oregon defensive tackle Derrick Harmon or Alabama’s prized linebacker Jihaad Campbell.</p><p>But sticking to the trusty PFN simulator here, Oklahoma’s Danny Stutsman becomes the next addition to the Broncos’ prominent pass-rushing group.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The Broncos advanced to the playoffs for the first time in nine years with a 10-7 record last season, vastly exceeding expectations with a rookie quarterback at the helm and with a roster that was considered to be the worst in the NFL by Pro Football Focus.</p><p>Nix turned in one of the finest rookie seasons by a quarterback ever, posting 33 total touchdowns against 12 interceptions. He also went through a stretch in which he posted 16 touchdowns against just two interceptions through a 10-game run in which the Broncos went 7-3.</p><p>“He has a certain demeanor to him,” says Surtain II in a one-on-one interview. “I feel like he’s all about football, but when he is off the field, he’s an advocate towards God and spreading that word out towards the locker room. When you have a person that follows that role, you just look to him in the highest ways. He’s a great teammate, a great person as well too, a great leader.”</p><p>Surtain singles out Nix’s “confidence” as a major reason why the Broncos were able to have so much success last season. It also doesn’t hurt that Nix continued to grow throughout the season after struggling early on.</p><p>Nix went the first three games without throwing a touchdown pass while throwing four interceptions. During his first two games, his passer rating was no higher than 55.2. By the end of the season, Nix had thrown at least four touchdown passes in four of his final seven games.</p><p>“You could tell when he is on the field, he has the great confidence that he possesses out there and it shines bright each and every Sunday,” says Surtain II of Nix. “I’ve seen him grow each and every week, seeing his mechanics, just the way he goes about his business. It’s rewarding knowing that you have a guy like that, that you work with each and every week. I’m looking forward to his success at the end of the day.”</p><p>What makes Nix’s performance even more impressive is factoring in that the Broncos didn’t have a single Pro Bowl or All-Pro talent on the offensive side of the ball this past season. Their lone representative in that regard was Marvin Mims Jr., who did so as a return specialist.</p><h2><b>Broncos’ Bo Nix should be even better in sophomore season</b></h2><p>Considering the Broncos just added Pro Bowl tight end Evan Engram through free agency, one should expect Nix to be even better during his second season, especially when factoring in his added confidence.</p><p>“I’ve just seen it with the confidence,” says Surtain II. “I think it really shined across the room as well too, the way he’s able to control the huddle, control the team, control the offensive stuff in that nature. It paid dividends when you could see the offense maneuver differently when he was under center, when he was confident, when he was making accurate throws.”</p><p>The Broncos will look to take the next leap forward heading into the 2025 season. After losing to the Buffalo Bills, 31-7, in the Wild Card Round, they’ll be looking to pull off more wins against elite teams. Denver had just one victory over a playoff team during the 2024 season.</p><p>The reigning Defensive Player of the Year stresses that his main goal is to <a href="https://thesportsdaily.com/news/patrick-surtain-exclusive-interview-broncos/" rel="noopener">win moving forward over garnering individual accolades</a>.</p><p>Nix’s growth and development will be key towards ensuring that happens.</p><p>“You could just tell the team, that confidence grow each and every week, even when he didn’t have his greatest games,” says Surtain II. “He still had the confidence to get the win at the end of the day. After the first week of the 2025 NFL free agency window concluded, ESPN’s Adam Schefter joined Denver’s Altitude Sports Radio 92.5 FM to discuss how the 49ers <a href="https://www.nbcsportsbayarea.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/dre-greenlaw-free-agency-denver-broncos-adam-schefter/1835769/" rel="noopener">tried retaining</a> Greenlaw.</p><p>“You know, the Niners were trying to get back Dre Greenlaw, even after Denver had an agreement done with him,” Schefter said, via NBC Sports Bay Area. “They were pushing to get that done. And, they were trying to flip his decision. … The Niners tried to flip Dre Greenlaw back to San Francisco. And I think they were pretty persuasive, but not persuasive enough. I think Dre Greenlaw stood his ground and kind of stayed with Denver.</p><p>“In San Francisco, they’re struggling to pay everybody, so that’s part of it.”</p><p>Now, when looking at the teams that are flying by the seat of their pants on making enough cap space to field a full roster, the 49ers’ finance team could be in for a long offseason.</p><p>And — according to Schefter’s report — their job almost got harder, as the 49ers were insistent on trying to keep Greenlaw on their defense.</p><p>As a 27-year-old linebacker, Greenlaw has spent all six years in the NFL with the 49ers. However, he’s headed east, joining Sean Payton and the Broncos.</p><p>Denver sported <a href="https://www.foxsports.com/articles/nfl/2024-nfl-defense-rankings-team-pass-and-rush-stats" rel="noopener">one of the best defenses in the league</a> in 2024, and with Greenlaw joining a somewhat needy linebacker group, the expectations are even higher in 2025.</p><p>After <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/49ers-news-dre-greenlaw-suffers-crushing-achilles-injury-while-running-onto-field-super-bowl-58">Greenlaw tore his Achilles in Super Bowl LVIII</a>, he missed the first 13 games, making his <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/49ers-news-dre-greenlaw-season-debut-tnf-rams">2024 debut on Thursday Night Football in Week 15</a> against the Los Angeles Rams.</p><p>However, after appearing twice for the 49ers in 2024, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/49ers-news-dre-greenlaw-gets-unfortunate-injury-update-ahead-of-week-17-vs-lions">Greenlaw was shut down</a> for the last two games.</p><p>And with the other contracts ahead of the 27-year-old linebacker in the 49ers’ queue of bills, Greenlaw teamed up with Payton, joining a division with Patrick Mahomes, Justin Herbert, and … Geno Smith. Okay, well, the first two names were intimidating.</p><p>Regardless, the 49ers — although they reportedly pleaded for the linebacker to re-sign in free agency, even after a deal was in place for him to leave — go into 2025 with another hole in their roster, yet little money to do anything about it.</p><p>Unfortunately for Greenlaw, he doesn’t face his former team in the upcoming regular season, as the 49ers and Broncos aren’t opponents in 2025.</p><p>There is always the possibility for the playoffs, but the Broncos have a much greater likelihood than the 49ers of making a postseason run, especially with Dre Greenlaw on their defense.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

It is the perfect time to build your roster, but teams also usually have to overpay for players on the open market, as they are bidding against every team in the league. These <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/nfl-stories/how-nfc-north-winning-2025-nfl-free-agency-packers-arent">moves could pay off</a>, but they are risky because of the significant financial investment and lack of guarantee that a player will work in a new system. Free agent signees could end up busting out and not living up to the contracts that they signed, so here are the moves from this offseason with the most disaster potential.</p><h2><b>Milton Williams, New England Patriots</b></h2><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/nfl-stories/patriots-news-milton-williams-180-spurns-panthers-104-million-contract-new-england">Milton Williams signed a deal</a> totaling more money than any other free agent this offseason. His contract with the New England Patriots totals $104 million. That is a lot of money for someone who is somewhat unproven. The defensive tackle played four seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, but he only started 19 total games.</p><p>His hefty contract is likely a result of winning Super Bowl 59. Had he have been on a different team and put up similar production, there is no way he’d get a nine-figure contract. Williams did shine in limited time on the field, but he was glued to the bench more often than not, as the Eagles had first-round investments in Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter. Williams only has <a href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/W/WillMi08.htm" rel="noopener">132 total tackles and 11.5 sacks</a> in his four-year career.</p><p>This is the ultimate high-risk, high-reward signing. Williams does have loads of potential, but if he doesn’t become the star that the Patriots think he can become, than the team is tied to a player with a bigger contract than anybody else earned during this free agent period.</p><h2><b>Sam Darnold, Seattle Seahawks</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Sam-Darnold-5.jpg"><figcaption>Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The next biggest contract went to Sam Darnold, which makes sense, considering quarterbacks go for a pretty penny in the NFL. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/seattle-seahawks/seahawks-news-seattle-sam-darnold-agree-massive-100-million-contract">Darnold signed a three-year, $100.5 million deal with the Seattle Seahawks</a> after the team <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/seattle-seahawks/seahawks-news-why-seattles-geno-smith-trade-is-being-universally-panned">traded Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders.</a></p><p>This is a risky deal that could blow up in the Seahawks face because Darnold really only has one season of high-quality NFL football to his name. Prior to his last season with the Minnesota Vikings, Darnold looked like a<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/cleveland-browns/ranking-biggest-nfl-draft-busts-last-10-years-zach-wilson"> massive draft bust</a>. The New York Jets originally picked him third overall in the 2018 NFL Draft, but he failed drastically during his tenure as the starting quarterback with the team (and with the Carolina Panthers).</p><p>Darnold broke out in a big way during his lone season in Minnesota, as the quarterback was named to the Pro Bowl after throwing for 4,319 yards and 35 touchdowns. It is fair to wonder if this was a one-hit-wonder situation, though. Darnold had the perfect context to thrive, as his head coach, Kevin O’Connell, is an offensive genius. Darnold also had the best receiver in the NFL to throw to in Justin Jefferson.</p><p>The Vikings let Darnold walk for a reason, so there is a chance he reverts back to his old ways in Seattle. The Seahawks are committed to the quarterback for the long run, but it isn’t set in stone that he is a franchise-level signal-caller.</p><h2><b>Morgan Moses, New England Patriots</b></h2><p>Morgan Moses was one of the best tackles in football during his time with the Washington Commanders. He has become somewhat of a journeyman since surpassing age 30, though. Moses played for the New York Jets in 2021 before he was on the Baltimore Ravens’ roster for two season. Then, he went back to New York last season.</p><p>Moses is now 34 years old, and while he has been reliable, handing him a three-year contract is a risky proposition. That is exactly what the Patriots did. The team handed out a lot of money during NFL free agency (in addition to the two players on this list, they also <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/nfl-stories/biggest-overpays-start-nfl-free-agency">overpaid for Carlton Davis</a>). Moses’ best days are in the rearview mirror, and he will be pushing 40 by the time his contract with the Patriots expires. Few players thrive in their mid-to-upper 30s in the NFL, so it is a risky proposition to rely on an <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-england-patriots/patriots-news-adding-drake-maye-protector-morgan-moses-24m-deal">aging veteran to protect Drake Maye.</a></p><h2><b>Chase Young, New Orleans Saints</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Chase-Young-1.jpg"><figcaption>Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Chase Young was the second overall pick in 2020, but he never quite lived up to his pre-draft billing. The defensive end has become somewhat of a journeyman, as he has played for three different teams over the last two seasons. He is a solid player, but he hasn’t become a great player.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/saints-bring-back-chase-young-on-shocking-51-million-deal">New Orleans Saints paid him like a megastar, though, as they gave him a $51 million deal</a>. Young is still only 25 years old, but he has never had more than 7.5 sacks in a season. His production was underwhelming with the Saints last season, and it is fair to question if the Ohio State product can live up to this contract. It seems as though the Saints are paying Young more for what he can become than what he is.</p><h2><b>Dre Greenlaw, Denver Broncos</b></h2><p>Paying players with injuries red flags is risky. Dre Greenlaw looked like one of the best linebackers in the NFL before getting hurt, but he suffered a torn achilles in Super Bowl 58. The injury held Greenlaw out for almost the entire 2024 season, and he didn’t look like the same player when he returned for the final two games of the San Francisco 49ers season.</p><p>If Greenlaw returns to form, then the Denver Broncos got a steal. However, achilles injuries are viewed at as the hardest to effectively come back from, so the player who <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/denver-broncos/broncos-bolster-defense-signing-star-linebacker-35m-deal">signed for $35 million over three years</a> may never look like the star he once was again. Now the Denver Broncos look like a potential destination, per one insider.</p><p>Kupp’s name is “firmly in the mix” <a href="https://x.com/Schultz_Report/status/1900329748439433364" rel="noopener">for the AFC North franchise</a>, according to Fox NFL insider Jordan Schultz Thursday.</p><p>“As Cooper Kupp evaluates his options, sources say he will get the number he wants, despite a slow receiver market,” Schultz posted on X. “The Broncos are firmly in the mix.” </p><p>However, Denver isn’t the only one attached to Kupp’s name. The 2024 first rounder snapped Denver’s playoff dry spell by leading the franchise back to the postseason — a first since the Broncos’ 2015 Super Bowl winning season.</p><p>There’s more than can potentially attract Kupp in the Rocky Mountains. Head coach Sean Payton is a distinguished offensive coach with a strong background in delivering stout wideout production. Courtland Sutton became an 80-catch, 1,000-yard WR this past season under Payton. Former New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas is a past dominating league leader under Payton — who delivered two seasons of surpassing 125 receptions under the head coach.</p><p>Denver needs a reliable extra target for Nix, though. Marvin Mims and Devaughn Vele never surpassed 42 receptions playing next to Sutton. Kupp can become an instant veteran boost if brought over.</p><p>While Denver is a contender, one AFC South team featuring a Kupp connection isn’t. After visiting with the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers, the 30-year-old tight end has agreed to a new deal.</p><p>Engram <a href="https://x.com/RapSheet/status/1899916433934385648" rel="noopener">has officially signed</a> with the Broncos, according to his agent, Mike McCartney of Vayner Sports, and confirmed by Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. Denver finds a talented tight end to help Bo Nix and the offense improve for next season.</p><p>“Former Jaguars TE Evan Engram is signing with the Broncos on a 2-year deal, per agent Mike McCartney.”</p><p>Evan Engram is coming to Denver after <a href="https://x.com/TomPelissero/status/1899919851751374977" rel="noopener">signing a two-year, $23 million contract</a>, per Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network. $16.5 million is fully guaranteed for the star tight end.</p><p>“Compensation update: The Broncos are signing TE Evan Engram to a two-year, $23 million deal that includes $16.5 million fully guaranteed at signing, per The Insiders. Engram gets a new home, and Sean Payton gets his ‘Joker.'”</p><p>Engram played for the Jaguars for three seasons before the team decided to let him go to free agency. His first two years in Jacksonville were solid, as he provided consistent production. However, the 2024 campaign wasn’t as kind, as Engram missed eight games after suffering a season-ending torn labrum.</p><p>He ended the season with 47 receptions, 385 yards, and a touchdown. When news broke of his release from Jacksonville, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/jacksonville-jaguars/jaguars-news-evan-engram-farewell-goes-viral">Evan Engram sent the fanbase a farewell message</a>. Now that he’s with Denver, Engram has an opportunity to bounce back from the injury and serve as a solid pass option in Sean Payton’s offense.</p><p>Tight end wasn’t a strong position for the Broncos last season, as the team relied more on the wide receiver group and running game. However, some teams manage to find diamonds in the rough. Adding a free agent for a cheaper-than-expected contract allows a team to continue building their roster with the money they saved. With that said, here are the best signings to start free agency. In this article, we will only be looking at external free agents who signed contracts with new teams and not players who re-signed with their old team.</p><h2>D.J. Reed, Detroit Lions – three years, $48 million</h2><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/nfl-stories/2025-nfl-free-agents-post-super-bowl-ranking-top-players-available-offseason">We ranked D.J. Reed as the third-best free agent</a> this offseason, yet he wasn’t even the highest-paid free agent at the cornerback position in the opening hours of the negotiation period. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/lions-news-dj-reed-lions-3-year-48-million-deal">Reed signed a three-year, $48 million deal with the Detroit Lions</a>. That is $12 million in total less than the player Reed is replacing: Carlton Davis.</p><p>Davis was a key member of the Lions defense last season, but the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-england-patriots/patriots-news-carlton-davis-60m-contract-new-england">three-year deal he just signed with the New England Patriots</a> was worth $60 million. Both players are 28 years old, and we think Reed is the more talented of the two, yet the Lions got him at a discounted rate.</p><p>Reed was often overshadowed on the New York Jets by Sauce Gardner, and perhaps that is why he was undervalued this offseason. He is still one of the best cornerbacks in football, though. The Lions were great all regular season long last year, but the wheels fell off when the defense was depleted because of injury. Reed brings much-needed star power on that end of the football, and he serves as a direct upgrade over Davis.</p><h2>Sam Darnold, Seattle Seahawks – three years, $100.5 million</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Sam-Darnold-4.jpg"><figcaption>Kirby Lee-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Sam Darnold was a polarizing free agent. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/cleveland-browns/ranking-biggest-nfl-draft-busts-last-10-years-zach-wilson">Darnold was a former number three overall draft pick who looked like a massive bust</a> for most of his career. Then, on his fourth different NFL team, the Minnesota Vikings, he burst onto the scene with a Pro Bowl campaign in which he looked like one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.</p><p>It is hard to know if Darnold finally turned the corner and reached the potential scouts saw in him as a prospect. He could have had a fluky season, with Kevin O’Connell’s play-calling genius inflating his numbers. The Vikings’ plan all along was to have Darnold serve as a bridge quarterback until first-rounder J.J. McCarthy was ready to go, so they let the quarterback walk in NFL free agency.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/seattle-seahawks/seahawks-news-geno-smith-requested-trade-seattle-contract-standoff-raiders-deal">Seattle Seahawks, fresh off trading Geno Smith</a>, were all of a sudden in the quarterback market. They swooped in and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/seattle-seahawks/seahawks-news-seattle-sam-darnold-agree-massive-100-million-contract">landed Darnold on a $100.5 million contract</a> over three years. That may seem like a lot of money for someone who only has one good season under their belt. However, quarterbacks come at a pretty penny in the NFL, and the risk could pay off in a big way if the USC product is able to build off of his season with the Vikings.</p><p>Additionally, when it comes to quarterback money, Darnold actually isn’t making all that much. The average annual value of Darnold’s contract is just over $33 million per season. That figure would have only been tied with Baker Mayfield for the <a href="https://overthecap.com/position/quarterback" rel="noopener">18th-largest AAV</a> last season at the position, according to Over The Cap.</p><p>Almost all of the quarterbacks making less than that per year are still on their rookie contracts. Darnold is set to make less than guys like Kirk Cousins, Deshaun Watson, and Derek Carr, all of which are on thin ice with their respective teams. It isn’t a guarantee that Darnold will become a star, but he has the potential to far outplay this contract.</p><h2><b>Talanoa Hufanga, Denver Broncos – three years, $45 million</b></h2><p>Talanoa Hufanga was a First-Team All-Pro after his age-23 season with the San Francisco 49ers. He looked like one of the rising stars in the league, and it was easy to envision him dominating at the safety position for close to the next decade. Then, the injury bug bit, causing him to become somewhat forgotten.</p><p>Hufanga has all the talent limited to 17 total games over the last two years. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/denver-broncos/broncos-news-sign-talanoa-hufanga-45-million-contract">The Denver Broncos were able to cash in on his quiet last two seasons</a> by inking the safety to a bargain of a contract at $45 million over three years. And if he impresses under head coach Mike McDaniel, there’s a chance the former No. 2 overall could revitalize his NFL career a bit.</p><p>Tagovailoa has played just one full season, finishing all 17 games in 2023. No, as Payton put it recently <a href="https://www.si.com/nfl/broncos/news/sean-payton-broncos-need-joker-weapon-2025-offseason" rel="noopener">during an appearance</a> on the Up &amp; Adams Show, a ‘Joker’ is a tight end or running back who has exceptional receiving ability.</p><p>Sean Payton cited Jimmy Graham, Alvin Kamara, Jeremy Shockey, Darren Sproles and Reggie Bush as examples of players who have occupied this role for him in the past, but this is a hybrid position that the Broncos have lacked since Payton took over as Denver’s head coach ahead of the 2023 NFL season. Now, with free agency on the verge of officially kicking off, it looks as if Batman and Joker are in the same building. Suppose that means we can start calling Denver ‘Gotham City.’</p><p>According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, two-time Pro Bowl tight end <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/jaguars-shockingly-release-evan-engram">Evan Engram, who was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars</a> just a few days ago, is <a href="https://x.com/AdamSchefter/status/1899102475208003902" rel="noopener">in Denver today</a> visiting with the Broncos.</p><p>You could nitpick various areas of Evan Engram’s game, but one attribute that is indisputable is that when healthy, he’s one of the league’s premier pass-catching tight ends. Consider, that in his last 43 games, Engram has caught 234 passes for 2,094 yard and 9 touchdowns. His 114 receptions were fourth-most in the NFL in 2023, and the 37th best mark in the history of the league.</p><p>Engram would certainly fit the mold that Sean Payton is looking for, but there’s a pair of tight ends in the 2025 NFL Draft — Tyler Warren and Colston Loveland — who have been frequently mocked to the Broncos who would provide Sean Payton with a cheaper, younger, and potentially even better option. Denver enters free agency on Monday with roughly <a href="https://overthecap.com/calculator/denver-broncos" rel="noopener">$40 million in cap space to spend</a>. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/denver-broncos/broncos-rumors-denver-labeled-sneaky-threat-free-agency">Broncos are getting a head start on free agency</a> by working on a contract extension with one defensive starter.</p><p>The Broncos are <a href="https://x.com/JFowlerESPN/status/1898949065204781354" rel="noopener">closing in on a contract extension</a> to keep DT D.J. Jones per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. The deal is valued at around $13 million per season.</p><p>Denver is clearly doing whatever they can to keep one of their core contributors on defense.</p><p>Jones is the starting nose tackle for the Broncos. He is currently set to hit free agency at the start of the new league year. Jones is a stout run defender who is also capable of collapsing the pocket and creating pressure.</p><p>Jones turned 30 years old in January. If he signed a multi-year extension with the Broncos, which Fowler’s reporting suggests is imminent, then he could finish his career in Denver.</p><p>Jones generated 18 total pressures, including two sacks, during the 2024 season. They are also trying to retain Zach Wilson but they may lose him.”</p><p>Stidham has played in three games each over the past two seasons in Denver. He is a capable backup quarterback who provides some consistency in case Bo Nix is ever out of the lineup.</p><p>It is interesting to hear that Denver is also interested in retaining Zach Wilson.
