Detroit held the Green Bay Packers to just 266 yards of total offense in Week 1, including just 78 rushing yards. Two of the Packers’ three touchdowns came on explosive plays, which upset Sheppard.</p><p>In Week 2, the Lions face a Bears offense that was up-and-down in Week 1. Chicago executed a near-perfect opening drive to take a 7-0 lead, but tapered off. Johnson’s offense ended with 317 yards of total offense and did not reach the end zone again until the end of the game.</p><p>Although Sheppard is in his first year as the Lions’ defensive coordinator, he has spent his entire coaching career practicing against Johnson’s offense. Now, to add insult to injury, Parsons could be complicating <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/detroit-lions/lions-news-gm-brad-holmes-potential-aidan-hutchinson-contract-extension">Detroit’s efforts to extend edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson</a>.</p><p>ESPN’s Dan Graziano <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/46208962/nfl-week-2-buzz-news-updates-fantasy-intel-questions-predictions" rel="noopener">explained the situation</a> in an article published on Wednesday. He noted that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/detroit-lions/lions-news-jameson-williams-agree-to-83-million-extension">Detroit has already extended Jameson Williams</a>, but still needs to get a deal done with Hutchinson.</p><p>“They’ve had productive talks but no agreement yet, and considering the extent to which the Micah Parsons deal set a new bar for edge rusher contracts, it could get complicated,” Graziano wrote on Wednesday.</p><p>Parsons signed a four-year, $188 million contract with the Packers after his trade from the Cowboys.</p><p>That means the price tag just went up on Hutchinson. That is especially troublesome for the Lions because they’ll soon have plenty more players to extend.</p><p>“The Lions have a lot of incentive to get this done before next spring, when their stellar 2023 draft class — including Jahmyr Gibbs, Jack Campbell, Sam LaPorta and Brian Branch — becomes extension-eligible for the first time,” Graziano added.</p><p>It will be interesting to see if Detroit does extend Hutchinson before next offseason as Graziano suggests.</p><h2><b>Should the Lions have extended Aidan Hutchinson before 2025 season?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Aidan-Hutchinson-expects-to-be-at-full-speed-this-season.jpg"><figcaption>Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Lions may have to pay through the nose if they want to keep Hutchinson.</p><p>So should Detroit have tried harder to extend Hutch before Parsons got his huge extension from the Packers?</p><p>Parsons likely did not factor into Detroit’s decision-making process here. For one reason, there was plenty of mystery surrounding <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/nfl-stories/nfl-rumors-3-teams-were-waiting-in-wings-if-packers-micah-parsons-trade-fell-apart">whether or not Parsons would be traded</a> at all.</p><p>One could argue that Parsons was going to be paid soon, one way or the other. But even so, the Lions cannot control every other NFL team. They also should not feel forced to make big decisions because of what other teams are doing.</p><p>There’s also Hutchinson’s injury to consider.</p><p>Hutch deserves credit for <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/detroit-lions/lions-news-aidan-hutchinson-reveals-the-bright-side-to-leg-injury">battling back from his serious leg injury</a> from 2024. But while Hutchinson’s recovery is impressive, it likely put him at a disadvantage during negotiations.</p><p>It is reasonable for the Lions to want proof that Hutch is still his old self on the field before extending him.</p><p>As such, how well Hutchinson plays in 2025 could go a long way towards guaranteeing himself future money.</p><p>Perhaps Hutchinson will make a splash in Week 2 against the Bears.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The Lions defense couldn’t stop the bleeding, and Jared Goff and company failed to get anything going against the new-look Packers defense with the addition of Micah Parsons.</p><p>Goff knows that the Lions need to be a lot better if they are going to reach their goals, get back to the playoffs and make a run at the Super Bowl this season. He believes that if they just <a href="https://www.mlive.com/lions/2025/09/lions-jared-goff-optimistic-offense-will-find-its-footing-after-sloppy-debut.html" rel="noopener">clean up the operation</a> a little bit, they will be able to get back on track this season, via Benjamin Raven of MLive.</p><p>“Just sloppy. Just have to be better in the details and communicate better,” Goff said on Wednesday. “I mentioned this after the game, it starts with me. I’ve got to communicate better and take a little bit of stress off of those guys from a communication aspect.</p><p>“Yeah, just be better. Just get back to our bread and butter. We’ve got good athletes. We’ve got good players. We’ve got good plays. The Week 2 matchup’s atmosphere brings the perfect opportunity for Bears vs. Lions bold predictions.</p><p>Chicago head coach Ben Johnson will have his first opportunity to face his old team. But with the game being played at Ford Field, Detroit will be looking to show him why he made the wrong decision leaving in the first place. Both sides know each other extremely well.</p><p>Falling to 0-2, with both loses coming to a division foe, could be devastating. The NFL season is long, but the NFC North will be one of the toughest divisions to win in football. As the Bears and Lions look to prove they have what it takes, it’s time for our Week 2 bold predictions.</p><h2><b>Caleb Williams throws for 300 yards</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Bears-QB-Caleb-Williams-running-from-a-Vikings-defender.jpg"><figcaption>David Banks-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Caleb Williams looked like a former No. 1 overall pick on his first drive of the game. He led the Bears 61 yards down the field, ending the opportunity with a nine-yard rushing touchdown. But from there, his play was shaky at best. Overall, Williams completed 21-of-35 passes for 210 yards and a touchdown. Still, Johnson will certainly look to make adjustments before Week 2.</p><p>The Lions offer the perfect opportunity for Williams to find his footing through the air. In Week 1, Green Bay Packers quarterback completed 16-of-22 passes for 188 yards. And that was with the Packers not having to throw the ball, holding a 27-6 lead with less than five minutes to play.</p><p>The Bears won’t be in that situation. Williams will have to thrown all night. Detroit just saw cornerback Terrion Arnold<a href="https://x.com/JFowlerESPN/status/1965079137779159511" rel="noopener"> suffer a groin injury</a>. While it isn’t considered long-term, there’s still a chance he doesn’t suit up. If Arnold is on the sidelines, Williams’ chances of surpassing 300 yards increases.</p><p>Chicago’s quarterback managed to hit the 300+ yard mark four times as a rookie. One of those games was in Week 15 against the Lions. He’ll repeat that feat in Week 2.</p><h2><b>Rome Odunze will receive 150+ of those yards </b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Rome-Odunze.jpg"><figcaption>David Banks-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>There is a clear growing connection between Williams and Odunze. Both being former top 10 picks, they will shape the core of Chicago’s offense for the foreseeable future. The Bears came up short against the Minnesota Vikings, but Odunze looked impressive.</p><p>He led the team with six receptions and nine targets, catching Williams’ lone touchdown pass. DJ Moore led the team with 62 yards, and Olamide Zaccheaus (42 yards) outgained Odunze’s 37. But it’s clear that when Williams looks downfield to pass, Odunze is already one of his favorite targets.</p><p>The sophomore could be pushed into a heavier workload in Week 2 based on DJ Moore’s injury status. He was <a href="https://sports.yahoo.com/article/dj-moore-injury-updates-latest-031846776.html" rel="noopener">forced to leave the field</a> after taking a big hit and grimacing in pain. Moore did eventually return, but the Bears will certainly be weary of his status throughout the week of practice.</p><p>But even if Moore plays, Odunze is poised to put on a show against the Lions. If Williams is hitting 300 yards passing, at least one Chicago receiver is set to pop off. The Lions may have only scored 13 points in Week 1, but that seems poised to change. While quarterback Jared Goff and company will ultimately need to earn that win, the atmosphere around the matchup is favoring Detroit’s side.</p><p>In Week 1, the Bears held a 17-6 lead over the Vikings entering the fourth quarter. But when Chicago’s offense stalled out, Minnesota was able to take advantage, scoring back-to-back touchdowns. The Bears were deflated as the Vikings’ sidelines were erupting. And that game was played at Soldier Field.</p><p>The Lions understand the lofty expectations placed on their shoulders after winning the NFC North. Falling to an immediate 0-2 would send shockwaves through the organization. If nothing else, head coach Dan Campbell will make sure his franchise understands the situation completely.</p><p>If Williams and the Bears can handle that pressure, perhaps they have a stronger chance of knocking off the Lions. But Chicago wasn’t able to finish cohesively in Week 1. There are sure to be changes, but the Bears self sabotaged throughout the loss. Chicago will keep things close and the final score will look similar to how it did against Minnesota. According to him, he did not mean to step on Rodgers. And I’m getting pushed back,” Suh said. “I don’t have eyes on the back of my head to see what’s going on and what he’s doing. And I think that’s why the NFL at the end of the day is like, look, I’m not looking at where he’s at, I just got done fighting two or three of you dudes.”</p><p>Suh compared his play to some others that received fines.</p><p>“You believe what you want to believe at the end of the day and I got fined for it rightfully so or not. That’s where everybody’s biased opinion or unbiased opinion to do it,” Suh said. “But at the end of the day, those things happen. There’s times where people are really intentional. And that’s exactly what one ESPN analyst seems to think.</p><p>ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky <a href="https://x.com/PatMcAfeeShow/status/1965460896110752049" rel="noopener">did not like what he saw</a> from Detroit’s offense in Week 1.</p><p>The former Lions quarterback highlighted Detroit’s lack of schematic advantages against Green Bay.</p><p>“The Lions offensively were as fun to watch. You would look forward to putting on their tape and watching it. And you would just marvel at the ways they would just create advantages for their players,” Orlovsky said on Tuesday via The Pat McAfee Show. “That the way they would create leverage advantage, or numbers advantage, or chunk plays. I saw one, and I think it was a busted coverage by Green Bay more than an advantage created by Detroit.”</p><p>Detroit could not control the line of scrimmage and never challenged Green Bay downfield. They rolled to a <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/boxscore/_/gameId/401772722">27-13 victory</a> over the defending division champions. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/green-bay-packers/packers-news-jordan-love-micah-parsons-mixed-injury-update-week-1-lions">Love and the offense set the tone</a> with an 83-yard opening touchdown drive that included two third-down conversions. What he delivered <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/green-bay-packers/packers-news-why-dan-orlovsky-picking-jordan-love-as-mvp">instead was MVP-style efficiency</a> He tallied 16 completions on 22 attempts, 188 yards, and two touchdowns for a sparkling 128.6 passer rating. He connected with Romeo Doubs on a 20-yard strike to open the game and later found tight end Tucker Kraft for a 15-yard score. Jayden Reed added the second touchdown grab, hauling in another well-placed throw.</p><p>Yes, Love cooled off a bit in the second half. He missed a couple of throws he would want back. That said, his first-half command was undeniable. He completed passes to 10 different receivers over four quarters, keeping Detroit’s defense guessing and preventing them from keying on any one target. The ability to orchestrate three straight scoring drives to start the game reflected a quarterback fully in control of his offense.</p><h2><b>The long road to QB1</b></h2><p>Love’s performance against Detroit didn’t happen in a vacuum. It was the product of years of development, doubt, and resilience. Recall that the Bakersfield, California native played at Utah State from 2016 to 2019. He threw for 8,600 yards and 60 touchdowns. Green Bay saw enough to trade up in the 2020 NFL Draft, selecting him 26th overall. As we all know, however, his rookie season was spent inactive. And it wasn’t as clean, but there again, you’re talking about a few plays that were critical. But, like I told the team, these are so correctable. Everything that showed up is so correctable, and we will hit it head-on.”</p><p>With new offensive and defensive coordinators, it may take time for the Lions to find a strong footing this season.</p><p>Campbell said his team found the bad spots too often.</p><p>“We made some critical errors at the worst times possible,” Campbell said. “And if you don’t do those, you take those out of the equation, it looks different. You feel like it could be a totally different scenario, but we did make those critical errors at the worst time. So, we’re going to learn from it.</p><p>“We’ll clean it up. It gives us a little barometer of where we’re at Game 1, and that’s OK. It’s always about improving, no matter what. He owned up to all of Detroit’s failings, though he did say that everything that went wrong is fixable.</p><p>He also gave the Packers their due credit for dominating in the season opener.</p><p>“That team played well,” Campbell said after the game, per The Athletic’s Colton Pouncy. “Credit to them and coach LaFleur. Morton orchestrated a bland attack that did not seem to have any answers for Green Bay’s deep coverage shells.</p><p>“They play deep coverage, man,” Campbell said. “They play a lot of Cover 2, they’ll play some three buzz and they keep everything in front of them. That’s how that defense is designed and so we knew that and the plan was to stay patient. Be patient and I thought Goff was. We took what was there and felt like eventually those shots would show. Just couldn’t quite get to them, you know? By the time you get a chance, or you hope you do, you’re down two scores. But that’s the nature of this defense and we weren’t able to generate seven when we got in the red zone.”</p><p>The Lions only managed 246 yards on offense, a pitiful result for what has been one of the league’s best units.</p><p>Detroit tried to force the running game early and often. They attempted 21 rushing plays, when counting an end around to Jameson Williams, and only managed 46 yards.</p><p>Nobody is asking Morton to suddenly become a tactical genius or trick play artist like Johnson. But it remains to be seen exactly what Morton’s vision for Detroit’s offense is after Week 1.</p><p>Detroit’s Week 2 matchup against Chicago and Ben Johnson suddenly looks more important than ever.</p><h2><b>Lions o-line repeatedly showed its inexperience against the Packers</b></h2><p>Perhaps another reason why Morton struggled in Week 1 is Detroit’s offensive line.</p><p>It is no secret that the Lions have plenty of turnover on the o-line. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/detroit-lions/lions-news-frank-ragnow-makes-shocking-retirement-decision-ahead-of-2025-campaign">Frank Ragnow retired</a> and veteran Kevin Zeitler left to join the Titans.</p><p>That puts Detroit in the unfamiliar position of having a good, not great, offensive line.</p><p>The Lions still have some promising players. But it will clearly take them some time to gel together and work well as a unit.</p><p>Second-year guard Christian Mahogany is now Detroit’s left guard. Former left guard Graham Glasgow slid back over to center and rookie Tate Ratledge is in at right guard.</p><p>The trio struggled mightily in Green Bay.</p><p>They failed to open up running lanes for Gibbs and Montgomery. They also did not hold up well enough in pass protection either.</p><p>Part of the problem was miscommunications. That is perhaps <a href="https://x.com/packers/status/1964819271885660338" rel="noopener">best evidenced by this blown assignment</a> that almost resulted in a safety.</p><p>Campbell is right that this problem (inexperience and lack of chemistry) <i>can </i>be fixed.</p><p>The question is whether or not the Lions can stack wins while they work on it.</p><h2><b>Where was Detroit’s pass rush in Week 1?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Aidan-Hutchinson-on-July-20-2025.jpg"><figcaption>© Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Finally, we could not let Detroit’s defensive line off the hook.</p><p>Aidan Hutchinson, Marcus Davenport, and the rest of Detroit’s edge rushers did not play nearly well enough against the Packers.</p><p>The Lions were unable to create any consistent pressure. They did not sack Jordan Love and only had two quarterback hits throughout the entire game.</p><p>Detroit’s defense was especially an issue in the first quarter. The Packers marched down the field almost unopposed to start the game. That helped swing momentum in their favor.</p><p>It will be interesting to see what changes, if any, defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard makes in Week 2.</p><p>I would love to see the Lions learn from the game tape from Week 1 and come up with a new plan for next week.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

And they had a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/detroit-lions/lions-news-jahmyr-gibbs-unfortunate-history-loss-packers">running back set an unfortunate record</a>. Therefore, is it time for the Lions to panic after a dreadful Week 1 without Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn?</p><p>The Lions lost their offensive coordinator, Johnson, in the offseason as he became head coach of the Bears. John Morton replaced him. On the defensive side of the ball, Glenn bolted for the Jets with Kelvin Sheppard taking over the coordinator role.</p><p>And Week 1 turned into pretty much a disaster with the Lions getting their lunch handed to them in a 27-13 loss to the Packers. They totaled only 246 yards of offense for a team that had arguably the NFL’s best unit in 2024.</p><h2><b>Should Lions head coach Dan Campbell panic?</b></h2><p>The easy answer to that question is a firm “No.” But it comes from three pathways, one perhaps surprising and the other two not.</p><p>First, it was Week 1, and that’s a big reason to shake it off. There are 16 more games left on the schedule. If the Lions finish, say, 12-5, nobody is going to worry about a bad Week 1.</p><p>Second, the Packers are good, maybe even Super Bowl good. With the addition of Micah Parsons to the defense and a terrific offense, the Packers will be tough for any NFL team to handle. Campbell <a href="https://lionswire.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/lions/2025/09/07/dan-campbell-lions-packers-postgame-comments/86035029007/" rel="noopener">gave credit to</a> the Packers, according to USA Today.</p><p>“That team played well,” Campbell said. “Credit to them and coach LaFleur, they came out and they played outstanding. We didn’t play good enough.”</p><p>Campbell also said the <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/recap/_/gameId/401772722" rel="noopener">coaching staff shares</a> the blame, according to ESPN.</p><p>“We didn’t coach good enough, including me,” Campbell said. “Like I told the team, it’s tough to go in and not certainly play close to your best game. You hate starting the season off with a loss, and as bad as that is, it’s not what it appears to be.”</p><p>But the third reason may be a little surprising. Campbell shouldn’t panic because he knew this was coming. You can’t lose coaches like Johnson and Glenn and expect to just roll out another 15-2 regular season. Losing both an offensive and defensive coordinator in one season is rage. According to detroitfootball.net, it has <a href="https://www.detroitfootball.net/p/is-losing-two-coordinators-a-death" rel="noopener">happened only five times</a> in the past three decades.</p><p>The Lions will face growing pains. They will lose some games they shouldn’t lose. And they probably won’t reach the Super Bowl this season.</p><h2><b>It wasn’t all bad for the Lions</b></h2><p>Some numbers make the loss seem a little less dreadful. The Packers totaled only 20 more yards (266-246). And the Lions had missed opportunities with a 1-for-4 mark in the red zone. That <a href="https://www.detroitlions.com/news/four-downs-red-zone-performance-played-a-big-role-in-lions-loss-to-packers" rel="noopener">needs to improve</a>, according to detroitlions.com.</p><p>“We were patient, and I thought we moved the ball on these long drives,” quarterback Jared Goff said of three 13-play drives that resulted in only one touchdown. “If you’re going to be patient, you have to score in the red zone. If you’re not going to score on 60-yard touchdowns, when you get down there, you have to score touchdowns.”</p><p>Campbell said hard study before the next game will help.</p><p>“Let’s clean up the tape,” Campbell said. “We made some critical errors at the worst times possible. You don’t do those. (And) you take those out of the equation, it looks different. You feel like it’s going to be a different scenario. But we did make those critical errors at the worst time.</p><p>“We’re going to learn from it, we’ll clean it up, and it gives us a little barometer of where we’re at. Game 1, that’s ok. It’s always about improving, no matter what.”</p><h2>Lions players aren’t in panic mode</h2><p>The players understand the situation, according to veteran left tackle Taylor Decker.</p><p>“We didn’t execute our game plan at the level we were supposed to,” veteran left tackle Taylor Decker said after the game. “I can say that confidently, even not watching the film. I think we average two-something a carry. That is not up to our standard.</p><p>“You get behind in points and they get to put out there their shiny new pass rusher (Micah Parsons) with Rashan (Gary) and they put (Lukas) Van Ness inside and they get to pin their ears back. That’s a challenge, especially when we have some young guys in there with communication and stuff.”</p><p>And even though the defense wasn’t awful, it needs to be better. The Lions didn’t record a sack and only hit Love twice.</p><p>“They nudged the edges and made sure they hit Hutch and weren’t going to let Hutch go one-on-one,” Campbell said. “That’s the world he’s in. The Lions fell behind very early in this game and were playing catch up all day against a revamped Packers squad that now features star pass rusher Micah Parsons.</p><p>Things went from bad to worse for the Lions when cornerback Terrion Arnold went down with a groin injury; however, thankfully, the team got <a href="https://x.com/JFowlerESPN/status/1965079137779159511" rel="noopener">a positive update</a> in that regard on Monday.</p><p>“CB Terrion Arnold’s groin injury is not considered serious, per source,” reported ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>Fowler also reported that “S Daniel Thomas broke a bone in his hand but plans to get a cast and try to play through it, per source.”</p><p>Arnold didn’t have his best day on Sunday, giving up a touchdown at one point to Packers wide receiver Jayden Reed, who was playing in the contest despite being injured.</p><p>Still, he’s one of the better cornerbacks on the Lions’ roster and figures to be a key part of their potential success moving forward.</p><h2><b>A rough start for the Lions</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Lions-news-Dan-Campbells-message-to-players-after-ugly-Packers-loss.jpg"><figcaption>Jeff Hanisch-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Fans of the Detroit Lions were probably hoping for a little bit more than what they saw out of their team on Sunday afternoon in Green Bay. While the Lions did lose both their offensive and defensive coordinators this offseason, they were still projected to have the best roster in the entire NFL by many, and that did not seem very apparent during the loss to the Packers.</p><p>It certainly looks like there will be a bit of a learning curve for Jared Goff and the offense as they adjust to life without Ben Johnson, now the head coach of the Chicago Bears, and it didn’t help matters that they were playing a tough divisional opponent in one of the most hostile environments in the NFL.</p><p>Next week, the Lions will welcome Johnson back to Detroit when they host the Bears at 1:00 PM ET, looking to get in the win column for the first time this season.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The previous record was held by Alvin Kamara, who had 33 yards on 13 receptions in 2023.</p><p>Gibbs couldn’t find much success on the ground either. He carried the ball nine times, amassing 19 yards overall, but 14 of those came on a single run, and his remaining eight carries produced just five yards. Fellow Lions back David Montgomery fared only slightly better with 25 yards on 11 carries. Overall, Gibbs and the Lions’ rushing attack failed to create explosive plays against a Packers defense that exploited Detroit’s inexperienced interior line.</p><p>The Lions’ offensive line featured three new starters. Graham Glasgow shifted from guard to center, rookie Tate Ratledge and second-year lineman Christian Mahogany started at guard, and even All-Pro right tackle Penei Sewell struggled against Green Bay’s defensive front.</p><p>Packers newcomer Micah Parsons, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/green-bay-packers/packers-news-micah-parsons-chases-down-jared-goff-1st-green-bay-sack">who collected his first sack as a Packer</a> in the fourth quarter, and the team’s two-safety cover shell with consistent four-man pressure repeatedly disrupted Detroit’s rhythm. Quarterback Jared Goff completed 31 of 39 passes for 225 yards with one touchdown and one interception, but was often forced into check-downs due to heavy penetration up the middle.</p><p>Detroit’s offense was further hampered by conservative play-calling under new coordinator John Morton. The Lions, who led the NFL in scoring last season under former coordinator Ben Johnson, struggled to replicate the explosiveness and creativity they had been known for. The only touchdown came on a leaping catch by rookie Isaac TeSlaa with 55 seconds remaining, preventing Detroit from going scoreless in the red zone for the first time since Week 7 of the 2022 season.</p><p>The Lions’ deficiencies were evident across all phases. On third downs, Green Bay converted repeatedly on early drives, highlighting Detroit’s inability to generate pressure even when sending extra rushers or dropping pass-rushers into coverage. For a team hyped as NFC contenders, it would be easy to spiral after an ugly opener against a rival. The Lions were sloppy on offense and inconsistent on defense. Jared Goff never found rhythm, and the run game offered little relief. Just last season, they ranked first in the entire league with an average of 33.2 points per game.</p><p>But against the Packers in Week 1, they did not even muster half of that. Detroit’s performance in Green Bay was an <a href="https://x.com/E_Woodyard/status/1964839093931806987" rel="noopener">early eye-opener</a> for Goff.</p><p>“There needs to be an urgency of improvement,” the Lions star quarterback shared after the contest, per Eric Woodyard of ESPN.</p><p>The Packers dominated the contest from start to finish. Jordan Love led Green Bay to a touchdown in the game’s opening drive. The Lions couldn’t muster a point in the first quarter and only had three on the board at halftime.</p><p>Goff finished the matchup throwing for 225 passing yards and a touchdown with an interception on 31-of-39 pass completions. His protection unit was clearly not up to par, having been sacked four times for a loss of 25 yards.</p><p>Behind that line is Detroit’s rushing attack that bled for yards on the ground. The Lions rushed for just 46 yards on 22 carries for an average of just 2.1 yards per carry.</p><p>The Lions didn’t fight the end zone until there was less than a minute left in regulation, as rookie third-round pick Isaac TeSlaa caught a 13-yard scoring grab to make the score a bit more respectable for Detroit.</p><p>Detroit had more first downs than the Packers, but Goff and the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/detroit-lions/lions-news-detroit-hits-new-low-offensive-struggles-week-1">Lions’ offense couldn’t make the important plays</a> when it mattered, as evidenced by their 5-for-15 performance on third downs. They were also just 1-for-4 in the red zone. The win ended Detroit’s three-game win streak in Green Bay and also showcased the debut of linebacker Micah Parsons, the Packers’ blockbuster trade acquisition from Dallas.</p><p>Parsons entered Week 1 still managing an L4/L5 facet joint sprain in his back, and the team limited his snap count to 45% (29 of 65). On his first defensive series, lined up against All-Pro right tackle Penei Sewell, Parsons pressured Jared Goff into a quick checkdown, setting the tone for the defense. Throughout the first half, his consistent pressure disrupted Detroit’s rhythm, most notably on a second-quarter third down when he blew past Sewell, forcing Goff into an interception by rookie safety Evan Williams.</p><p>Parsons finished the game with three pressures, second most on the Packers behind Lucas Van Ness (4). In the fourth quarter, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/green-bay-packers/packers-news-micah-parsons-chases-down-jared-goff-1st-green-bay-sack">he brought down a vulnerable Jared Goff with a powerful sack</a> for his first sack as a Packer. Reaching 18.47 miles per hour, he used his speed to close the gap and tackle Goff behind the line of scrimmage. <a href="https://x.com/RobDemovsky/status/1964831648438239542" rel="noopener">His pressures produced</a> a 2-yard loss on a completion, an interception, and a sack, according to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky.</p><p>Although he finished with only one tackle and a sack on paper, Parsons’ impact went far beyond the stats. His constant pressure freed up teammates, helping Lukas Van Ness notch a sack in the third quarter and Rashan Gary register 1.5 of Green Bay’s four total sacks. Rookie linebacker Edgerrin Cooper led the defense with 12 tackles, as the Packers held Detroit under 200 total yards until the final two minutes.</p><p>Jordan Love’s efficient outing, 16-of-22 passing for 188 yards, two touchdowns, and a 128.6 rating, paired with Parsons’ defensive impact, propelled Green Bay to its 13th straight home-opening win under Matt LaFleur.</p><p>Green Bay’s defense was already a top-six unit last season in yards, points, and takeaways, but the addition of Parsons transformed the pass rush. Once considered inconsistent, the front seven overpowered a Lions offensive line widely regarded as one of the league’s best. Parsons’ presence fundamentally altered the game plan of an offense that scored more points than any other team last season.</p><p>His presence made an immediate difference as Gary looked rejuvenated, Van Ness produced his most impactful outing to date, and the Packers’ defensive line controlled the trenches. Meanwhile, Detroit’s run game never got off the ground. Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery combined for under 50 rushing yards, neutralizing a key element of the Lions’ 2024 success.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/nfl-stories/nfl-news-packers-give-micah-parsons-188-million-contract-extension-after-blockbuster-cowboys-trade">The Cowboys shipped Parsons to Green Bay</a> in exchange for Kenny Clark and draft capital. Detroit wasn’t even able to record a touchdown until the fourth quarter, which isn’t something we’re accustomed to with this team. The offensive performance was so bad that Detroit accomplished a less-than-desirable feat not seen since 2023.</p><p>The last time we saw the Lions fail to record a touchdown <a href="https://x.com/E_Woodyard/status/1964820856816955548" rel="noopener">in the first three quarters</a> of a game came in Week 7 in 2023 against the Baltimore Ravens, according to ESPN’s Eric Woodyard. With prolific offensive coordinator Ben Johnson no longer in the picture, Detroit’s offense didn’t appear to be in sync on Sunday.</p><p>“The last time the Lions failed to score a touchdown in the first three quarters was Week 7, 2023 vs. Baltimore, per ESPN Research.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/detroit-lions/lions-terrion-arnold-leaves-packers-clash-with-groin-injury">The Lions ended Sunday’s loss</a> with 246 yards of total offense. Detroit’s passing game put up a vast majority of the yards, as the team threw for 200 yards through the air and had just 46 on the ground. When the offense did finally score a touchdown, it came in the fourth quarter when Jared Goff hit wide receiver Isaac Tesla on a 13-yard score.</p><p>Head coach Dan Campbell replaced Johnson with John Morton, who coached for the Denver Broncos as the team’s passing game coordinator. Overall, the Lions might be off to a slow start to begin the 2025-26 campaign, as the organization not only lost its offensive coordinator from last season, but it also lost its defensive coordinator, Aaron Glenn.</p><p>Dan Campbell and the Lions will have a chance to get back in the win column when they take on the Chicago Bears. A slow offensive start continued in the second half, settling for a field goal off the jump. Their defense will have to step up late in the game if they are going to pick up the win. But the Lions may have to do it without Terrion Arnold, who is <a href="https://x.com/AdamSchefter/status/1964818114954293473" rel="noopener">out for the game</a> with an injury.</p><p>“Lions ruled out CB Terrion Arnold due to a groin injury,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported. Arnold was originally considered questionable to return.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/detroit-lions/nfl-rumors-lions-stole-packers-target-draft-trade-terrion-arnold">Lions drafted Arnold in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft</a> and immediately trusted him. He started 15 games in his rookie season and followed up by earning the CB1 spot in the preseason this year. Arnold is a key piece of the rebuild that has sent Detroit to the top of the NFC.</p><p>The Packers and Lions are likely going to battle for the NFC North title throughout the season. If Green Bay takes advantage of Arnold’s departure and finishes off a win on Sunday, it could have serious ramifications for the remainder of the season. Arnold was important in this game, with three strong receivers on the Packers’ offense.</p><p>The Lions have a tough matchup against their former offensive coordinator, Ben Johnson, and the Chicago Bears. If Arnold is not 100% for that game, Johnson will know exactly how to take advantage. Arnold would be trusted against second-year stud Rome Odunze, which could be a tough matchup this year.</p><p>The Lions first have to try and mount a comeback against the Packers on Sunday. Jared Goff and the offense have been stagnant all game, and without Arnold, the defense will struggle.
