Fields got the job done with a 32-13 victory over the Raiders. The fourth-year quarterback has led the Steelers to a 4-2 record through the first six weeks of the season as Pittsburgh is tied with the Baltimore Ravens for first place in the AFC North.</p><p>Despite his success, Fields could soon find himself on the bench. Veteran QB <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/steelers-news-russell-wilson-full-participant-practice-amid-calf-injury-rehab">Russell Wilson returned to practice</a> last week. Now a quarterback change could be coming as <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/steelers-news-russell-wilson-week-7-start-jets">Wilson is trending towards starting Week 7</a> for the Steelers.</p><p>With his role on the team in jeopardy, Fields is keeping things in perspective. In the midst of all the noise over who should be under center for the Steelers when they take on the New York Jets Sunday night, Fields posted a simple but <a href="https://x.com/PortersBurgh/status/1846304684866183222" rel="noopener">meaningful message</a> to his Instagram story. “Your ‘normal’ day is someone’s dream, so be thankful everyday,” the post read, per Portersburgh on X.</p><p>The Steelers <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/grading-russell-wilson-contract-steelers">landed Wilson for the veterans’ minimum</a> after the Denver Broncos released him prior to the 2024 season. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/steelers-news-russell-wilson-starting-quarterback-justin-fields">Wilson was named the team’s starting quarterback</a> during the preseason but a calf injury has kept him sidelined through the first six weeks.</p><h2><b>Justin Fields has become a leader with the Steelers</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Justin-Fields_1b88a3.jpg"><figcaption>Stephen R. Sylvanie-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Fields has, for the most part, played well in his place. And in Week 6 he demonstrated his ability to lead the team and bounce back from adversity. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/steelers-news-fans-want-russell-wilson-justin-fields-struggles-cowboys">Fans were calling for Wilson</a> to replace Fields after the Steelers’ lackluster loss to the Cowboys. The following week, the 25-year-old signal caller helmed a dominant win over Las Vegas. Fields was more effective as a runner than a passer in the Week 6 rout. He was 14/24 for 145 yards through the air while carrying the ball 11 times for 59 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Most importantly, he didn’t turn the ball over.</p><p>When Wilson recovered from his calf ailment and returned to practice, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/steelers-not-ready-to-replace-justin-fields">Steelers didn’t appear ready to move on from Fields</a>. New offensive coordinator Arthur Smith gushed about the young quarterback, calling him “<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/steelers-news-arthur-smith-raves-extremely-coachable-justin-fields">extremely coachable</a>.”</p><p>Now head coach Mike Tomlin has a difficult decision to make. Former defensive back <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/steelers-news-richard-sherman-gets-real-about-russell-wilson">Richard Sherman</a>, current Steelers wideout <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/steelers-news-george-pickens-russell-wilson-vs-justin-fields-debate">George Pickens</a> and even Phoenix Suns forward <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/steelers-news-kevin-durant-justin-fields-russell-wilson-quarterback-debate">Kevin Durant</a> have all shared their thoughts on who should start for Pittsburgh moving forward. But the decision will come down to one man. Given Tomlin’s exemplary track record as a head coach, it’s likely he’ll make the right decision for the team. If Fields does take a back seat to Wilson, he’s probably shown enough to get a starting opportunity elsewhere in 2025.</p><p>The Steelers take on the 2-4 New York Jets at home in Week 7. The Sunday night game will showcase <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jets-news-davante-adams-reunites-aaron-rodgers-trade-raiders">new Jets receiver Davante Adams</a> who has reunited with quarterback Aaron Rodgers after being traded by the Raiders. Despite Justin Fields’ success this season, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is not ruling out <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/steelers-news-russell-wilson-week-7-start-jets">Russell Wilson to take over for the offense</a>. Former Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman <a href="https://steelersdepot.com/2024/10/richard-sherman-timing-isnt-right-for-qb-switch-to-russell-wilson-but-i-trust-tomlin/" rel="noopener">disagrees with the sudden move</a>, via John J. Kurcina of Steelers Depot.</p><p>“I’d be fine if it was sooner. Six games into the season, now seven. It’s just so much going on for Russ. But I believe in Tomlin. I trust Tomlin. I have no right to question his decision making. I think he’s making it based on things he saw in film, things he saw in practice, the game tape, what he saw from Justin Fields,” Sherman said on The Richard Sherman Podcast. “Maybe he thinks Russell Wilson can get more from out of this offense than Justin Fields. My concern with it is the rust factor. Getting up to game speed is something that is real. It’s significant.</p><p>“It’s going to take [Russell Wilson] a second to get back to the speed of the game. Taking real game reps, taking hits, being able to be quick and decisive with the ball. They’re a 4-2 team sitting pretty comfortably, so maybe that’s why Mike Tomlin felt like he has a little bit of cushion, and he can make this decision.”</p><p>While Tomlin hasn’t officially concluded that Wilson would be the Steelers’ starter for their matchup against the New York Jets, it certainly appears that the 35-year-old QB is set to make his first appearance of the season.</p><h2><b>Russell Wilson prepares for Steelers debut in Week 7</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Russell-Wilson-1.jpg"><figcaption>Barry Reeger-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>It’s going to be interesting to see just how things shake out <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/steelers-news-george-pickens-russell-wilson-vs-justin-fields-debate">between Wilson and Fields in Week 7</a>. After throwing for 1,105 yards, five touchdowns and just one interception through six starts, it’s hard to understand why the Steelers would make such a move at 4-2 in the AFC North.</p><p>Wilson plays to a similar style that Fields does. He’s a scrambler, and can make accurate throws on the run. His body has worn down in his 12th NFL season, but it cannot be debated that Wilson is one of the greatest improvisers the game has ever seen. He deserves the opportunity that he came to the Steel City to find. That’s not to take anything away from Fields. But at this point of the season, it makes sense to consider all of your roster options.</p><p>As Sherman alluded to on his podcast, there aren’t many reasons to distrust coach Tomlin.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Well, running back <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/steelers-news-justin-fields-sends-message-to-najee-harris-after-monster-raiders-game">Najee Harris has an undeniable talent</a> that Maxx Crosby <a href="https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aGdd2iW-wpY&amp;pp=ygULbWF4eCBjcm9zYnk%3D" rel="noopener">could not deny</a>, and does not want to meet in the Oklahoma drill.</p><p>“He’s another one. A big f****** physical back. You really got to tackle that ********,” Crosby crowed. “He is a big boy.”</p><p>Harris was big in a Week 6 Steelers’ win over the Raiders. The 26-year-old Alabama alum sprang for 106 yards on 14 carries in the 32-13 blowout. Crosby had a chance to keep one play closed down but missed out on an opportunity to get the Steelers off the field. He felt a certain way about the play even after sleeping on the loss.</p><p>“I’m not going to lie. I thought I had a clean ass TFL (tackle for loss) early and I lowkey missed,” admitted Crosby. “I was a little high. He got a little wiggly, but I got his ass later. So Harris, if you are watching, f*** you.”</p><p>That last part was said with a friendly laugh. Crosby couldn’t hold back when discussing an old friend.</p><p>“Big shout out to Harris. It says something about the organization that a Justin Fields versus Russell Wilson discussion has not caused more chaos.</p><p>Instead, it’s all business ahead of a Week 7 Sunday Night Football fight with the Aaron Rodgers-led New York Jets. The 2024 second-rounder out of West Virginia is graded fourth among eligible centers on PFF with an 82.2 grade. The interior offensive line has been a strength for the first time in years, and it’s reflected in Pittsburgh’s ability to run the ball and control the clock. While injuries may be mounting, the Steelers must remain loyal to their scheme and system.</p><p>The Steelers already <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/steelers-news-lose-key-offensive-lineman-season-torn-acl">lost OG James Daniels</a> to an ACL tear in their Week 4 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.</p><h2><b>Steelers getting it done old school with defense and a ground game</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Steelers-Zach-Frazier-blocking-vs.-the-Texans.jpg"><figcaption>© Barry Reeger-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Pittsburgh is far from perfect. They’ve only scored more than 20 points in a game twice this year and only won once when doing so. But the fundamentals of football never change. The Steelers limit turnovers, play good defense and control the clock with a ground game. Their +7 turnover differential is tied for second-best in the league, only behind the Green Bay Packers’ +9.</p><p>Maintaining this level of play without Frazier won’t be easy. Ryan McCollum is the listed backup and he’ll need to step up in Frazier’s absence.</p><p>Offensive coordinator Arthur Smith <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/40957985/pittsburgh-steelers-rookie-center-zach-frazier-qbs" rel="noopener">had high praise</a> right off the bat regarding Frazier, per ESPN’s Brooke Pryor.</p><p>“Zach’s played a lot of games at center,” Arthur Smith said in August. “It’s not the NFL, but he did it in the Power 5. I think he’s a very mature guy. You’re asking your centers to do a lot, but I would say of any rookie, he’s probably the most prepped, and we thought that when we drafted him. Since he’s been in this building, he’s as advertised.”</p><p>Frazier wasn’t even the starter coming into the season. That <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/steelers-news-steelers-offensive-piece-season-ending-injury">job belonged to Nate Herbig</a>, who went out with a torn rotator cuff in mid-August.</p><p>The first two picks in the 2024 NFL Draft were offensive linemen OG Troy Fautanu and Frazier. They also used a fourth-rounder on OG Mason McCormick. Despite the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/steelers-news-pittsburgh-offense-jaylen-warren-boost-raiders-contest">return of Steelers running back Jaylen Warren</a>, Harris had a huge game for the team which garnered a reaction from quarterback Justin Fields.</p><p>On the topic of Harris who rushed for 106 yards on 14 carries, Fields would compliment him after the game as himself had two rushing touchdowns on top of throwing for 145 yards. Fields said that he hopes to see <a href="https://x.com/bepryor/status/1845618200576442678" rel="noopener">more of that type of performance</a> from his teammate in future weeks according to Brooke Pryor of ESPN.</p><p>“I don’t know what he ate last night. I don’t know what he did, but he sure did ball out today. So whatever he did this week, hopefully he comes back and does the same thing next week.”</p><p>Harris himself has had an up and down career where some could label his outings as lackluster as he came out of the University of Alabama in the 2021 NFL Draft in the first round. Still, his Sunday performance showed what he can do on a consistent basis as <a href="https://www.post-gazette.com/sports/steelers/2024/10/13/najee-harris-fantasy-raiders-steelers-touchdown/stories/202410110108" rel="noopener">he had an NSFW response</a> about his big game on the ground according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.</p><p>“Sorry I can’t make every game like that,” Harris said with reportedly a smile. “I know y’all are just waiting to type something about me. I’m gonna try to do it again next game. Sylvanie-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Despite some fans not absolutely loving what Harris brings, no one can take away from him that in each of the past three seasons he’s been in the NFL, he rushed for over 1,000 yards and at least seven touchdowns. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/steelers-news-najee-harris-spotlight-cowboys-jaylen-warren-injury-update">Harris was confident</a> in his ability at his post-game presser even if he acknowledged his weakness in interviews.</p><p>“I know what I can do,” Harris said. “I don’t know what y’all are trying to get out of me. … I’m not good at interviewing, man, because I’m actually too honest with what I say and have no filter.”</p><p>There is no doubt that Harris has the respect of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/steelers-news-kevin-durant-justin-fields-russell-wilson-quarterback-debate">Steelers and could thrive in any state whether it’s Russell Wilson or Fields</a> under center and especially from the other skill-position players. One includes Pittsburgh tight end Pat Freiermuth who has notuced the work the 26-year old puts in.</p><p>“He works his ass off every single day, comes in the building every day with a smile on his face, ready to work,” Freiermuth said as he’s been with Harris on the Steelers as both were in the 2021 NFL Draft class. “Seeing it pay off in this game, we really leaned on him and it was just awesome to see. Very happy for him.”</p><p>“I don’t put any type of restraints on what I can do,” Harris said. “I don’t really care what other people say or think,” he said. “When I had the opportunity, I just took it. I didn’t care if I was however far away. When Lynch was a guest on Shannon Sharpe’s show, Club Shay Shay, the former <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/seahawks-news-marshawn-lynch-revealing-comments-relationship-russell-wilson-pete-carroll">running back was asked about Wilson</a> and Pete Carrol’s relationship.</p><p>“I wouldn’t be the right person to speak on their relationship because I didn’t f–k with them,” Lynch said. “I didn’t f–k with Pete, and then I mean Russ was just a quarterback for me.”</p><p>“I respect Russell as a player and as a teammate. Anything that I say is gonna come off as malice or as if I’m a hater. I’ll take Russell, and I’ll put him right there at quarterback, and I’ll rock with him because I have done that. The Steelers are now 4-2, and if they continue to play good football, there’s a good chance nothing will change offensively. Although he didn’t record a sack, he made significant contributions with two forced fumbles and two tackles for loss, helping the Pittsburgh Steelers’ defense recover from a rough start to secure a decisive 32-13 stomping of the Raiders.</p><h2><b>TJ Watt feels good about his age</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/TJ-Watt-after-Steelers-win-over-Raiders.jpg"><figcaption>Stephen R. I don’t feel any aging in my body at all right now,” said Watt. “I’m really happy with how that’s handled.”</p><p>While Watt’s stats through six games only include 25 total tackles and 4.5 sacks, his presence is felt on nearly every snap. Although they advanced down the field on their opening drive, it stalled, resulting in just three points from kicker Chris Boswell. Their only other possession in the first quarter ended in a three-and-out, and they didn’t score again until the second quarter.</p><h2><b>Shaky offense for the Pittsburgh Steelers</b></h2><p>Quarterback Justin Fields and the offense excelled on the ground, with Fields rushing nine times for 61 yards and scoring twice. Najee Harris also had his best game of the season, showcasing his ability to make sharp cuts and evade tackles. He ended the game with 14 carries for 106 yards, highlighted by a 36-yard run for his first rushing touchdown of the year.</p><p>The passing game was a different story for the Steelers and Fields, as they struggled to make significant progress. Fields completed 14 of 24 attempts for only 145 yards and did not throw any touchdowns. His accuracy was notably off, with several passes drifting over his receivers’ heads.</p><p>Although the offense showed inconsistency and imperfections during the game, they still managed to achieve their highest point total of the season.</p><p>The Steelers’ defense dominated by stifling the Raiders’ offense, even after a shaky start that let Las Vegas score a rushing touchdown on their opening drive. Following that initial drive, the Steelers clamped down, forcing three straight punts.</p><p>Star linebacker Watt’s relentless effort and focus on stripping the ball paid off when he knocked it out of rookie RB Dylan Laube’s hands during his first career carry. This crucial fumble led to recovery by NT Keeanu Benton.</p><h2><b>The Steelers tightening up on defense more in the second half</b></h2><p>The second half kicked off with a defensive highlight as the special teams unit made an impact. After Sunday’s loss to the Cowboys, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/steelers-news-mike-tomlin-honest-cutting-george-pickens-reps">Tomlin addressed why Pickens only played</a> <a href="https://x.com/bepryor/status/1843168655754059959" rel="noopener">34 snaps</a> out of 54, per ESPN’s Brooke Pryor.</p><p>“We just wanted to kind of minimize his reps in an effort to get more productivity,” the head coach told ESPN’s Brooke Pryor. “We’re just trying to manage in terms of the totality of the big picture. He wasn’t less of a focal point in terms of our intentions of what we wanted to do offensively, but we did want to cut his reps a little bit in an effort to get higher quality play, just in general.”</p><p>“It’s no different than we minimized some of the snaps of D lineman like Cam Hayward and so forth, man. It is just about snap management. It is no underlying story to be quite honest with you.”</p><p>Russell Wilson also praised who Pickens is <a href="https://x.com/bepryor/status/1844456170725208332" rel="noopener">as a player</a>, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/steelers-news-russell-wilson-bad-teammate-narrative-george-pickens">dismissing any narrative that suggests he is a bad teammate</a>, per ESPN’s Brooke Pryor.</p><p>“We love the player that he is. We love the competitor that he is and that’s the thing that you have to understand. Is George a bad teammate? Absolutely not. Is George a hell of a player? Absolutely. Is he a great competitor? Absolutely. Is he a guy that wants the ball? Absolutely. Is he a guy that can do anything on the field that most people can’t? Absolutely,” said Wilson.</p><p>Pickens has 23 receptions for 310 yards and no touchdowns through five games. The former Georgia wideout is on pace for a career-high in receptions (73), with a slight decline from last year’s receiving yards (1,054).</p><p>The Steelers will look to rebound in Week 6 after back-to-back losses.
