The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/atlanta-falcons/falcons-news-bijan-robinson-immediately-starts-season-50-yard-house-call">Falcons wasted no time with a 50-yard touchdown from Bijan Robinson</a> via a pass from Michael Penix Jr.</p><p>In the final seconds, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/atlanta-falcons/falcons-news-michael-penix-jr-backs-younghoe-koo-fatal-miss">Falcons kicker Younghoe Koo missed a potential game-tying field goal</a>, which gave the Buccaneers the win. Still, it was a tight NFC South battle to start the year.</p><p>Penix played well, throwing for 298 yards with one touchdown and rushing for another score.</p><p>After the game, Penix <a href="https://www.ajc.com/sports/2025/09/michael-penix-jr-impressed-baker-mayfield-hes-young-but-hes-got-it/" rel="noopener">received a strong endorsement</a> from Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield.</p><p>“I told him after the game, he’s going to be a problem in this league for a long time,” Mayfield said, via Gabriel Burns of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I think he’s a great player. He’s decisive, goes through his reads, trusts his guys. He’s young, but he’s got it.”</p><p>Robinson was the leading receiver for Atlanta, finishing with six receptions for 100 yards and a touchdown. Tight end Kyle Pitts had seven catches for 59 yards, and Drake London had eight catches for 55 yards on a team-high 15 targets, although the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/atlanta-falcons/falcons-news-drake-london-suffers-injury-buccaneers">Falcons’ WR1 suffered a shoulder injury in the game</a>.</p><p>Even in the loss, Mayfield couldn’t help but speak highly of the Falcons’ signal-caller. In 2024, Penix threw for 775 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions while playing in five games as Kirk Cousins was the QB1 for part of the year.</p><p>But, it is now the time for Penix to shine, and the 2024 eighth overall pick got off on the right foot in the opening weekend despite the close loss to the Buccaneers.</p><p>The Falcons will look to respond in Week 2 as they travel to face the Minnesota Vikings, followed by a Week 3 road game against the Carolina Panthers, but the early signs are promising for the young quarterback who is officially the QB1 this time around.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Mayfield will have to feed Mike Evans and rookie Emeka Egbuka. Chris Godwin and Jalen McMillan will both have roles when they return. But Otton’s share in the offense will only be amplified in their absence. But from there, the tight end has only been further incorporated into the offense.</p><p>In 2023, he caught 47 passes for 455 yards and four touchdowns. And in 2024, despite playing in only 14 games, Otton set new career-highs in receptions (59) and yardage (600) while tying his career-best with four touchdowns.</p><p>The tight end won’t get as many headlines as Evans or even the rookie Egbuka. But it is clear he has become a trusted safety blanket for Mayfield. In the red zone, Otton should be one of the top targets. And if teams are too focused on Tampa Bay’s explosive receiving options, Otton will be open in space.</p><p>But the first step for the Buccaneers was simply getting their tight end back on the field. He has blossomed into an offensive star, keeping the team firm in playoff contention.</p><p>Tampa Bay is preparing for its opener against Atlanta, a fierce rivalry in the NFC South Division. When it comes to what he expects from the matchup, Mayfield <a href="https://x.com/DOrlandoAJC/status/1963794465220341890" rel="noopener">gave plenty of insight</a> into it.</p><p>“Obviously they had some personnel changes. I haven’t seen a lot of tape of Leonard Floyd with them, but we know who he is — great player. They spent some early picks on edge rushers as well. Some changes in the secondary (too). AJ Terrell is still there, great player. Jessie Bates, ballhawk, a game-changer guy. And Divine Deablo, a new guy in the interior, linebacker level for them. (There are) some younger (defensive backs) that are going to play. Just personnel wise, trying to figure out who’s going to be where without really being able to get non-(exhibition) season tape up there to prepare with,” Mayfield said, via D. Obviously they’re coached hard, just knowing Raheem Morris and then from talking to Haason (Reddick) about Jeff (Ulbrich), their (defensive coordinator), they coach those guys hard. Most were career highs across the board, showing his immense growth since entering the league in 2018.</p><p>He will look to take Tampa Bay on a deep playoff run. They lost in the NFC Wild Card Round to the Washington Commanders, who went on to reach the NFC Championship.</p><p>The Buccaneers will prepare for their season opener against the Falcons. After just one game, offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle believes his signal-caller has the talent to be one of the greatest in program history.</p><p>Mateer has only been in Norman for a handful of months, but has already taken the team by storm. Arbuckle, whom Mateer followed from Washington State to Oklahoma in the offseason, believes that the redshirt junior is <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6596352/2025/09/04/john-mateer-oklahoma-quarterback-michigan/" rel="noopener">cut from the same cloth</a> as Mayfield.</p><p>“I wasn’t around Baker, but from people who were around him, they said there’s a lot of similarities in their confidence and charisma,” Arbuckle said, via ‘The Athletic.’ “Baker’s probably a little more outward with his charisma than John is. Both 5-foot-11 to six-foot. They don’t fit the prototype.”</p><p>The Oklahoma football team has had many great quarterbacks, but Mayfield is arguably the best in program history. After transferring from Texas Tech, Mayfield amassed 12,292 passing yards, 119 touchdowns and 21 interceptions through three years with the Sooners and won the 2017 Heisman Trophy.</p><p>Mayfield arrived in Norman at the same time as offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley, much like Mateer and Arbuckle. That similarity in the quarterbacks’ careers is another reason Oklahoma football fans draw the comparison.</p><h2><b>John Mateer leads Oklahoma into tough Week 2 matchup</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Oklahoma-QB-John-Mateer-3.jpg"><figcaption>SARAH PHIPPS/THE OKLAHOMAN / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Mateer received a softball in his Oklahoma debut against Illinois State, but the Sooners are in for a much tougher test in Week 2. They will remain home as they host No. 15-ranked Michigan, coached by Oklahoma alum Sherrone Moore.</p><p>Michigan also started the year 1-0 after beating New Mexico 34-17 in Week 1. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/ncaa-football/michigan-football-news-the-moment-sherrone-moore-knew-that-bryce-underwood-is-qb1">Wolverines also debuted a new quarterback</a>, with Bryce Underwood becoming the team’s first true freshman to start the season opener since Tate Forcier in 2009.</p><p>Although playing in different offenses, Mateer and Underwood both shone in their debuts. Underwood did not get the chance to showcase his complete skill set, but both are high-level dual-threat quarterbacks who displayed a clear ability to lead their new offenses immediately.</p><p>The game will be one of the biggest matchups of the week, but oddsmakers give Oklahoma the early edge.
