He’s basically got Courtland Sutton and cross your fingers. Bo Nix is on a heater. And like C.J. Stroud. He and Bo Nix have a responsibility to rebuild a team. His passer rating is 71.4, and his QB rating is 42.2. Through six games, Brock Purdy has 1,629 yards (271.5 ypg), nine touchdowns, four interceptions, and 127 rushing yards. His passer rating is 100.5, and his QB rating is 70.9.</p><h2><b>Broncos rookie Bo Nix still learning to be great</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Broncos-Bo-Nix-delivering-a-short-pass.jpg"><figcaption>© Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The media’s insistence on comparing players and teams only diminishes one at the expense of another. Nix has played well, considering the hand he was dealt. The Broncos entered the season with extremely low expectations and have exceeded them as a team. The 49ers began the season with big expectations and haven’t met them as a team. Assigning blame in a team sport is an inexact science, and the inverse is true as well.</p><p>Did Bo Nix directly contribute to the Broncos’ defense forcing New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers to throw three interceptions? Probably not. Or how about the Broncos 19 sacks (third-most)? Or Denver only allowing 271.2 yards per game (third-best)? The Broncos are also tied for second in points allowed per game (14.6).</p><p>To lessen Brock Purdy doesn’t make Bo Nix a better player.</p><p>Head coach Sean Payton is still ironing out the rough edges of Nix, according to his own <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/broncos-news-sean-paytons-hilarious-ferris-bueller-viral-bo-nix">comparison to Ferris Bueller</a> when discussing their sideline tiff in last week’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders.</p><p>“Listen, there’s just a little ‘Ferris Bueller’ in this player that we gotta get rid of. I’m talking about Bo (Nix) and I love him to death. Sometimes, it’s my love language.”</p><p>When asked about the fight, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/broncos-news-sean-paytons-hilarious-ferris-bueller-viral-bo-nix">Nix had his own version</a> of the story.</p><p>“He told me he loved me. They play in a division dominated by the Kansas City Chiefs and don’t have high expectations given their unproven quarterback, rookie Bo Nix.</p><p>However, the Broncos have shocked the football world through five weeks. After starting 0-2, they’ve rattled off three consecutive wins and sit in second place in the AFC West. Two of their last three wins <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/broncos-overreactions-from-shocking-blowout-of-buccaneers">were upsets</a> over the heavily favored Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Jets. Last season, it took Denver eight weeks to garner three victories.</p><p>Nix, who went 12th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, has upside, yet wasn’t considered by many to be the Broncos’ savior. Five other quarterbacks were selected ahead of him and the upcoming season was viewed as more of a rebuilding year. Nix appears to have the Broncos ahead of schedule, as he threw for 206 yards and accounted for three touchdowns during a 34-18 win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.</p><p>His on-field success didn’t stop him from <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/broncos-news-bo-nix-blows-up-sean-payton-raiders">having a fiery conversation</a> with Broncos head coach Sean Payton.</p><p>After rookie receiver Troy Franklin dropped an easy deep ball in the end zone, the Broncos were forced to punt, leaving Nix frustrated and headed to the sidelines. He must’ve taken some of that anger out on his coach because he was seen yelling at Payton and getting in his face.</p><p>ESPN analyst and former Super Bowl champion Ryan Clark witnessed the heated exchange and <a href="https://x.com/Realrclark25/status/1843056191683096849" rel="noopener">found it ironic</a>.</p><p>“This looks a little different than it did last year with [Russell Wilson] doesn’t it? Guess Bo has earned that through all of his NFL experience though,” he posted on X.</p><h2><b>What exactly is Ryan Clark talking about?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Broncos-Bo-Nix-at-the-line-vs.jpg"><figcaption>© Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Although Clark’s tone can’t be heard, his comments were dripping in sarcasm. Nix is still in his first year in the NFL and has little experience compared to Russell Wilson, the Broncos starting quarterback for the majority of the last two seasons.</p><p>Despite Wilson’s status as a Super Bowl champion and nine-time Pro Bowler, his time in the Mile High City was a disaster. The future Hall of Famer went 11-19 with Denver and was benched for his final two games as a Bronco.</p><p>This benching was labeled as a financial move, yet it truly signaled the end of the Wilson era in Denver. Just two weeks before the quarterback change, Payton approached Wilson on the sidelines and berated him during a blowout loss to the Detroit Lions.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">The Broncos were called for offensive offsides, wiping out a TD on 4th-and-goal. </p><p>Sean Payton was livid at the officials… and Denver QB Russell Wilson. </p><p>"Well, there is a very animated discussion. Nix added two more in Week 5</p><p>“It was huge to go on the road and get two tough wins (vs. Bucs and Jets) against two tough defenses and two tough offenses,” Nix said. ”You can’t say enough about our defense on this winning stretch.”</p><p>The Broncos will once again have to prove themselves against an AFC West foe next week. He’s been sacked four times.</p><p>Nix had success in college, playing for Auburn and Oregon. The quarterback was the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year in 2023 with the Ducks. He can become as good as Elway in the NFL, but he has a long way to go. The quarterback often looked confused throughout the game and he completed just 12 of 25 passes for a paltry total of 60 yards.</p><p>One of those completions was an 8-yard TD pass to Courtland Sutton in the third period, and that play turned out to be one of the key reasons that the Broncos were able to come away with the road victory. Head coach Sean Payton has been a huge backer of his rookie quarterback since the start of training camp and into the season. While he could not have been overly thrilled with Nix’s performance, he backed his quarterback publicly after the game.</p><p>Nix was able to buy time on the touchdown before he threw the ball to Sutton. The receiver had to leap to make the catch and he got both of his feet down inside the boundary for the score. It was the first TD pass of Nix’s career.</p><p>Payton said his quarterback played well and he never lost confidence in him, <a href="https://x.com/ZacStevensDNVR/status/1840491765411008663">per a report</a> from Broncos beat reporter Zac Stevens.</p><p>Nix had it especially tough in the first half of the game when he had minus-7 yards passing in the first 30 minutes.</p><h2><b>Broncos hang on as Jets miss late field goal</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Bo-Nix-struggled-the-Broncos-Week-4-win-over-the-Jets.jpg"><figcaption>Mandatory Credit: Robert Deutsch-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Jets struggled on offense throughout the game and they could not get into the end zone at any point in the game. They had to settle for three Greg Zuerlein field goals.</p><p>The Jets had an opportunity to win the game when Zuerlein attempted a 50-yard field goal with 51 seconds left. The attempt was wide right and the Jets ended up having to absorb a home defeat.</p><p>New York had won its two previous games and the Jets were 8-point favorites over the Broncos.</p><p>The Sutton touchdown reception gave the Broncos a 7-6 lead, but Zuerlein gave the Jets back the advantage when he kicked a 40-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter.</p><p>The Broncos responded with an 8-play, 41-yard drive and placekicker Will Lutz gave the visitors the payoff when he connected on the game-winning 47-yard field goal.</p><p>Jets quarterback <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jets-news-aaron-rodgers-image-goes-viral-loss-broncos">Aaron Rodgers</a> was clearly disappointed when Zuerlein’s late FG attempt was unsuccessful. He completed 24 of 42 passes for 225 yards. While he did not throw an interception, Rodgers was sacked 5 times for 41 yards in losses.</p><p>Defenses dominated for both teams. Safety P.J. That set Denver up to charge down the field and score their first points of the game. Aided by multiple Jets’ penalties, Nix found Sutton to end his touchdown drought.</p><p>Nix’s first two games were dreadful, as the Broncos lost both and were held to just 26 total points. They could not score a passing touchdown when the offense took off in Week 3. Nix ran one in during their win over the Buccaneers for his first touchdown of any kind.</p><p>The Broncos’ offense has reverted to the first two weeks in the early stages of the game against the Jets. Together, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/saints-news-drew-brees-reflects-on-his-time-with-sean-payton-after-hc-steps-down">Brees and Payton crafted one of the league’s best offenses</a> for a decade and a half in New Orleans until <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/saints-news-sean-paytons-heartfelt-statement-on-drew-brees-retirement">Brees retired in 2020</a>. For fans in the Bayou, it was a match made in football heaven.</p><p>Coincidentally, when Payton had his first chance to bring a quarterback into the Broncos organization, the signal-caller he chose was Oregon’s Bo Nix, who <a href="https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10113678-bo-nix-compared-to-drew-brees-by-mel-kiper-jr-ahead-of-2024-nfl-draft" rel="noopener">received a pre-draft comparison</a> to Brees from ESPN’s NFL Draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. Shoot, even <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/broncos-news-sean-payton-drew-brees-bo-nix">Payton himself made the quarterback comparison</a>, noting during training camp that both Nix and Brees were hard to sack.</p><p>Now, fans in the Mile High City will be hoping that Payton’s second act is just as successful as his time in New Orleans was. By the time Brees had come to New Orleans, he was already a 27-year-old who had five years of NFL experience under his belt. Payton was a 43-year-old first-year head coach. Nix completed a Brees-like 69 percent of his passes for 216 yards. He’s yet to throw for a touchdown, but for the second time this season, Nix used his legs to punch one into the end zone. To this point in the season, Jayden Daniels and former Oregon teammate Bucky Irving are the only rookies with more rushing yards than Nix.</p><p>After the win, the often-prickly Payton offered his rookie QB some <a href="https://www.nfl.com/news/broncos-hc-sean-payton-on-bo-nix-after-first-win-this-guy-is-going-to-be-something" rel="noopener">well-deserved praise:</a></p><p>“The kid’s been confident. Nix finished the game with 216 passing yards and nine carries for 47 yards and a touchdown. After the game, wide receiver Courtland Sutton had nothing but <a href="https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/courtland-sutton-we-saw-a-really-good-glimpse-of-bo-nixs-potential-sunday" rel="noopener">good things to say</a> about Nix and was excited about the potential of the quarterback.</p><p>“Him being able to see the defense and understanding the game plan and knowing what plays will work for us, it’s encouraging to see that, because it’s only his third week,” Sutton said. “I think I’ve spoken at length about it still being early for him. The strides that he’s made so far are very encouraging, but he’s only going to continue to get better. As of Week 2, the team has a lot of questions to answer. Meanwhile, Nix has kept his head up through the setbacks, and he gave an insight into his mindset, including how he handles mistakes from his teammates.</p><p>Asked about his teammates dropping his passes, Nix was forthcoming.</p><p>“When I miss a pass, they don’t come up and harp on me,” the rookie said in a press conference, via Andrew Mason on X, formerly Twitter. “So I think I gotta treat them the same exact way. And, yeah, we’re professionals, and we have a high standard, but we’re allowed to mess up, too. So I’m not gonna get too uptight about one play,” the quarterback added. “And now if there’s something that I can do to help them, I’m definitely always there for them.”</p><p>What do the Broncos need to succeed, according to rookie Bo Nix? He acknowledged that the team still had plenty of work to do.</p><p>“But I definitely think it’s a work in progress,” he continued. “And we–all 11 of us on offense–have things we can improve on. And sometimes a drop is seen on national television, but you didn’t see the inaccurate throw or you didn’t see somebody that might have messed up within the play. So, sometimes that is made bigger than what it is. I think it’s just a mistake that everybody makes, and we just got to continue to fix 0ur mistakes.”</p><p>Still, Nix’ underperformance didn’t miss the notice of NFL fans and insiders. One <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/vincentfrank/2024/09/16/denver-broncos-must-make-right-move-and-bench-bo-nix/" rel="noopener">report even suggested</a> that the Broncos should bench Bo Nix due to his disappointing play for two games, which made it clear that perhaps the young quarterback was in over his head in the early stages of his pro career.</p><p>Moreover, another loss would certainly put Sean Payton on the hot seat and seriously jeopardize the Broncos’ playoff hopes. Well, you've come to the right place.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Editorials</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>After watching rookies like CJ Stroud and Justin Herbert immediately hit the ground running right out of the gates, fans in the Mile High City had <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/broncos-news-sean-payton-tabs-bo-nix-qb1">incredibly high hopes for Bo Nix in 2024</a>.</p><p>Widely dubbed an <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/broncos-news-bo-nix-sean-payton-feeling-like-he-has-his-patrick-mahomes">ideal fit for Sean Payton’s offense</a>, fans cheered as he fell into the team’s lap in the draft, with the Atlanta Falcons shocking the world by drafting Michael Pennix Jr. eighth overall and the Vikings trading up to pick JJ McCarthy when Nix was still on the board. No need to move up to make a selection, no need for a gap season with a veteran journeyman like Gardner Minshew and the Las Vegas Raiders, just a genuine shot at a well-traveled rookie who spent the last five years in college and the next five under contract the with Broncos.</p><p>The only problem? Nix has looked darn bad thus far as a pro, so much so that some have openly questioned if he should even start next week in Tampa Bay.</p><p>Fortunately, while Nix may not be perfect, he is the perfect man to lead the Broncos onto the field against the Buccaneers and moving forward, too, as the team simply doesn’t have another option with more overall upside that they could roll with during this developmental season.</p><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Bo-Nix-under-center.jpg"><figcaption>Mandatory Credit: Marc Lebryk-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><h2><b>Bo Nix is the Broncos’ best quarterback in 2024</b></h2><p>On paper, Nix might just be the worst quarterback in the NFL through the first two weeks of the season, right up there with recently benched Panthers pick Bryce Young.</p><p>He’s tied for the most interceptions in the NFL at four, hasn’t thrown a single touchdown, and, despite having had some success moving the ball down the field, having completed <a href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/N/NixxBo00.htm" rel="noopener">46 passes on 77 attempts for 384 yards</a>, he’s been sacked four times, has a QBR of 35.7, and simply doesn’t have the infrastructure in place to do much about it, as the Broncos aren’t going to magically get any better over the next few months.</p><p>Would it make sense to pull the plug on Nix and give the ball over to a veteran hand in the hopes of saving the season, allowing the Oregon product to learn from the sidelines instead of under center while gaining a better grasp of the NFL game? Sure, that’s the plan the Panthers are attempting with Young right now, but here’s the thing: The Broncos don’t have a backup quarterback like Andy Dalton who has won dozens of games at the NFL level or taken multiple teams to the playoffs.</p><p>No, as of right now, the Broncos have Jarrett Stidham, who is a journeyman backup at this stage of his career, and Zach Wilson, who was repeatedly given chances to play for the Jets since being drafted second overall and has routinely made his team regret that decision. Are either of those players going to win more games than Nix?</p><p>Or what about signing a player off the street like Ryan Tanahill, who is a sort of Dalton-esque veteran? Does he move the needle in a very tough division with no time to prep and a 0-2 deficit?</p><p>At this point, rolling with Nix is not just the Broncos’ best choice, but likely their only choice to turn things around.</p><p>Fortunately, unless you are incredibly optimistic – or unrealistic – you likely assumed that the Broncos wouldn’t be very good this year, that starting the sixth quarterback taken in the 2024 NFL draft was going to be a process, and that, for the sake of the franchise, giving as many snaps as possible to Nix is what’s best for Denver, as best case he figures it out and becomes a long-term player and worse case, the team loses a lot of games and get to pick a new quarterback, someone like Cam Ward or Carson Beck, in the future.</p><p>If this season was about anything other than setting a strong base for the future, then why did the Broncos trade away Jerry Jeudy? In the Broncos’ Week 1 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, the rookie went 26-42 passing for only 138 yards, averaging only 3.3 yards per attempt.</p><p>Similarly, Nix also threw two interceptions and was sacked twice, and 13 of his completions only gained them four yards or fewer. Only two pass plays gained over ten yards.</p><p>Receiver Josh Reynolds said, after the Seahawks game, “We have to make plays around [Bo Nix]. …When we have a chance, make some plays, just clean up stuff.”</p><p>However, there are only 17 weeks in an NFL season, and time could start running out for Bo Nix to develop into a reliable quarterback for the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/broncos-news-notify-russell-wilson-release">Broncos, who’d just released Russell Wilson</a> after two disastrous seasons. Moreover, the Broncos rookie will only face tougher defenses from now on.</p><h2><b>Petty game ball</b></h2><p>Despite receiving the “petty game ball,” Wilson didn’t seem to bear ill will toward his former team and coach Sean Payton, who benched Russ in the last two games of the 2023 season.</p><p>“I have a lot of amazing friends from there,” Wilson said a week prior to the game, via Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com. “…I just think that for me it’s always about relationships. But as we all know, in the preseason, most No. 1 defenses (or offenses) aren’t starting, which can lead to misleading results.</p><p>Against the Seahawks, Nix finished 26-of-42 for 138 yards, two interceptions, and suffered two sacks for a loss of six yards. He also ran for 35 yards and scored a touchdown. There’s obvious work ahead for head coach Sean Payton in improving what he hopes to be his next great quarterback project. But until then, there will be plenty of overreactions.</p><h2><b>Overreaction: The Broncos failed again at drafting a quarterback</b></h2><p>For a franchise that boasts two of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play in John Elway and Peyton Manning, the Broncos have an equally long list of failed quarterbacks. In almost the last decade since Manning’s departure after the 2015 season, Denver has had 13 different quarterbacks make a start.</p><p>Since 2015, the Broncos have drafted five quarterbacks, including Nix. All but one made a start, that being Chad Kelly, a seventh-round pick in the 2017 draft. Nix is just the second first-round selection during that span.</p><p>When the Broncos weren’t attempting to find their next quarterback in the draft, they were making what turned out to be questionable moves by making trades or acquiring players in free agency. None panned out, giving the Broncos one of the longest playoff droughts in the team’s history, with no appearances since the 2015 Super Bowl.</p><p>Now enter Nix, who likely wasn’t Payton or the team’s first choice — they reportedly tried to move up in this year’s draft to select one of the top three quarterbacks. Nix could have used a good game to silence Broncos fans’ cries. But it’s also important to remember that this was just game one for a rookie quarterback making his debut with only preseason work on his resume.</p><h2><b>Overreaction: Where is Bo Nix, the accurate passer?</b></h2><p>Once Nix <a href="https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/bo-nix-1.html">got to Oregon</a>, transferring from Auburn, he became one of the best quarterbacks in the country. His final year in Eugene eventually landed him in New York as a Heisman Trophy finalist.</p><p>He did, however, win the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year award. That’s because he became an elite passer in 2023. He made leaps both years he was with the Ducks. Coming from Auburn, he went from a 61 percent completion to 71.9 in 2022. In 2023 he went all the way up to a 77.4 completion percentage, which was best in the country. He also threw for 4,508 yards and 45 touchdowns to three interceptions.</p><p>The game for Nix as an NFL passer is now faster than in college. Even though he had 51 games of experience at the college level, nothing can make up for gaining NFL experience through multiple starts.</p><p>Many are quick to point at Nix’s 61.9 percent completion percentage on Sunday, with the main sticking point being his two interceptions. The first came on a Broncos 49-yard, 12-play drive in the second quarter that ended with Nix throwing a pick at the one-yard line.</p><p>The one that’s getting the most criticism was <a href="https://x.com/awfulannouncing/status/1832926367425700199" rel="noopener">his second one</a>. However, one game doesn’t reflect Nix’s future, or for that matter, the Broncos’.
