To some, that is a waste of money since he signed a four-year, $120 million deal. Hopefully, he gets integrated into schemes better and this was just a result of him being away from the 49ers for a long time. Despite this, the receiver didn’t seem overly worried about how he physically fared in Week 1.</p><p>With Christian McCaffrey sidelined by a calf and Achilles injury, San Francisco anticipated that Aiyuk would need to step up. Well, you've come to the right place.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NFL</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>After spending the summer more concerned with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/49ers-news-brandon-aiyuk-contract-saga-120-million-extension">dollars and cents than Xs and Os</a>, Brandon Aiyuk had an incredibly uneventful return to the field for the San Francisco 49ers in Week 1, catching just <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/49ers-news-peyton-manning-goes-off-brandon-aiyuk-dropped-pass-vs-jets">two of the four passes sent his way by Brock Purdy</a> for four yards and no touchdowns.</p><p>Now granted, some of this wasn’t too surprising, as Aiyuk looked understandably rusty in his big return game, but after becoming a top-five wide receiver with his new $120 million contract, it makes sense that some fans might be in their feelings about what they saw from the Arizona State product.</p><p>One such member of Niners Nation who wasn’t particularly proud of Aiyuk’s efforts? Well, that would be Aiyuk himself, who told reporters that he was actually<a href="https://x.com/KNBR/status/1833971382641946643" rel="noopener"> afraid to watch his Monday Night Football efforts</a> because of his less-than-elite stat line, even if those numbers didn’t tell the whole story.</p><p>“After the game, I didn’t watch the film until this morning. I was a little bit scared to watch it, but (it was) not as bad as I thought,” Brandon Aiyuk admitted. “Yeah, I was scared to watch it.”</p><p>In the NFL, one of the few positions that can’t control its own destiny is wide receiver, as a player can do everything right and just never get a ball thrown their way. While Aiyuk did look a little rusty, he was also clearly a focal point of Robert Saleh, who knows firsthand how good he can be due to his deep-rooted connection to the 49ers, so that certainly didn’t help his efforts either. With that saga behind them, San Francisco could focus on their regular season with Aiyuk in tow. However, after San Francisco’s season-opening win over the New York Jets, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan <a href="https://www.49erswebzone.com/articles/183774-shanahan-confirms-glazers-report-brandon/" rel="noopener">wanted to put</a> the Aiyuk trade speculation to rest once and for all.</p><p>According to NFL insider Jay Glazer, the team was in the final stages of a trade deal with the Steelers on the day Aiyuk signed his contract extension. Aiyuk arrived early at the 49ers’ facility that day and met with head coach Kyle Shanahan. Realizing Aiyuk wanted to stay with the team, Shanahan quickly tried to halt the trade discussions. However, he couldn’t reach the front office because they were already on the phone with the Steelers.</p><p>“So Shanahan actually ran all the way upstairs, said, ‘Hold this. Put a hold on these trade talks right now. Pittsburgh, we’ll call you right back,'” Glazer continued. “They went down and talked to Aiyuk for about two hours. The matchup was filled with stars, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jets-news-aaron-rodgers-weapon-clowned-after-dropping-pass-first-game-back">including Aaron Rodgers</a>, Brock Purdy, and Brandon Aiyuk. Aiyuk had a first-half mishap that drew an empathic reaction from former superstar quarterback Peyton Manning.</p><p>Brock Purdy threw an on-target pass to Aiyuk near the end of the second quarter to the corner of the endzone. However, the ball slipped through Aiyuk’s hands. Manning then <a href="https://x.com/awfulannouncing/status/1833319133418819639" rel="noopener">proceeded to go off</a> on the 49ers reciever on an episode of “ManningCast”:</p><p>“There’s a reason for training camp. You need it. You need the reps. Get those contracts done earlier, so we can get in training camp [and] we don’t drop balls on opening night,” Manning began. “You’re still catching balls at a high school field from some quarterback 45 years old my age. You’re not catching balls from your quarterback. Get signed, get in camp, and we don’t drop the ball.”</p><p>Peyton Manning did not take it easy on Aiyuk. Manning highlighted the importance of Aiyuk maintaining chemistry with Brock Purdy so that such mishaps do not happen.</p><p>Aiyuk missed a significant portion of the team’s training camp due to his contract extension negotiations with the 49ers. After nearly a full summer of back and forth, the two sides <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/49ers-news-brandon-aiyuk-contract-saga-120-million-extension">agreed to a four-year, $120 million extension</a>.</p><p>Despite his early dropped pass, Aiyuk ended the Jets-49ers game with 28 yards on two receptions. He should be able to find his groove, considering the outstanding season he had in 2023. Aiyuk amassed a career-high 1,342 yards along with seven touchdowns. One new report suggests that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl-rumors-steelers-came-closest-brandon-aiyuk-trade-49ers">Aiyuk was <i>very</i> close to being traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers</a>.</p><p>The 49ers were reportedly ready to trade Aiyuk to the Steelers <a href="https://x.com/MySportsUpdate/status/1832818034710360519" rel="noopener">on the day that he signed his extension</a>, per Jay Glazer. San Francisco’s front office was in the process of finalizing the trade and gave Aiyuk an ultimatum: take our deal or the trade happens today. While both of these guys are good to go for Week 1, they missed a significant chunk of the Niners offseason program, meaning that they could be limited when they take the field for Monday Night Football against the New York Jets.</p><p>While Aiyuk conducted a hold-in with San Fran, Williams held out entirely, and only recently returned to the team. Williams is an integral piece of San Francisco’s offensive line, and as one of the best left tackles in the game, playing even one snap without him could be detrimental for the 49ers. That’s not to say that the Niners don’t need Aiyuk on every snap, but there are several playmakers around him, such as Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, and Christian McCaffrey who can give him a play off when he needs one.</p><p>While Aiyuk and Williams not being fully ready to go isn’t ideal, having them available in any capacity is better than not having them available at all. And considering how that seemed to be a legit possibility for much of the summer, the 49ers will surely be OK with easing Aiyuk into the action, while also hoping that Williams is in good enough shape to potentially play the entire game.</p><p>How much usage these guys get will be interesting, but it looks like the plan for how many snaps they get is a bit different. But Cooper said that’s not the case.</p><p>“Hey, I mean, the media is all about sensationalism, so I’ll let y’all have fun with whatever you thought that might’ve meant,” Cooper said. “At the end of the day, you might be traded away from one team — it’s all about how you perceive things.</p><p>“Life is all about perception because in regards to trades, you’re traded away from one team but you’re being accepted into another team. So I just look at it as, that’s how the business is arranged.”</p><p>Cooper started his career with the Raiders, posting 1,000-yard seasons in each of his first two seasons. He moved on to Dallas in 2018, putting together two more 1,000-yard seasons. With the Browns over the last two years, Cooper became the first receiver in team history to record back-to-back seasons with at least 1,000 yards. The seven-time Pro Bowl selection finished last year with 72 receptions for 1,250 yards with five scores.</p><h2><b>Cooper hopes to continue consistent performances</b></h2><p>Cooper will become a free agent after this season. Still, the Browns wanted to make Cooper feel better about 2024, They restructured his contract to guarantee him $20 million, moving his ceiling up $5 million as well. Therefore, he can make $25 million this season.</p><p>Browns general manager Andrew Berry said Cooper is <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/40387933/browns-wide-receiver-options-heading-2024" rel="noopener">a key part</a> of the team despite the contract and the trade talks, according to espn.com via NFL Network’s “The Insiders.”</p><p>“Sometimes all teams will have periods where they go through these types of situations,” Berry said. “But it doesn’t change our affinity for Amari. We’ll navigate, call it, the business considerations and the business aspects as it goes. But he is a big part of our team. And just as importantly, he’s a big part of our culture.”</p><p>Head coach Kevin Stefanski said Cooper <a href="https://www.cleveland.com/browns/2024/09/kevin-stefanski-on-hosting-the-cowboys-jedrick-wills-jr-and-more-transcript.html" rel="noopener">hasn’t been distracted</a> heading into Week 1, according to cleveland.com via a team transcript.</p><p>“We talked about Amari over the years and over the months,” Stefanski said. “I mean, he’s about his business.”</p><p>Cleveland’s season opener is an interesting one. It turns out, that was <a href="https://www.si.com/nfl/takeaways-brandon-aiyuk-49ers-negotiations" rel="noopener">one of the two options</a> that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl-rumors-tricky-brandon-aiyuk-trade-49ers-browns">Aiyuk had on the table</a> with the 49ers amid the contentious negotiations that also included trade talks with teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots.</p><p>“San Francisco was at $26 million per year in May, but didn’t move off that spot before camp kicked off in July,” Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reported. “Then, when camp commenced, and Aiyuk decided to hold-in, the sides had to start over. On Aug. 12, the Niners made the two proposals—one for $120 million over four years, and another for $87 million over three years. Aiyuk rejected both, and they came off the table. Then, last week, when the sides reopened talks, the Niners’ offers went back on the table, and Aiyuk took the four-year, $120 million deal.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl-rumors-steelers-came-closest-brandon-aiyuk-trade-49ers">The 49ers and Aiyuk standoff</a> was at the center of attention for a lot of fans this offseason, as many were wondering if the NFC’s top Super Bowl contender would have its top wide receiver on the field, or if another team would have him. Instead, Aiyuk is back with the 49ers and seemingly set to play in Week 1 against the New York Jets on Monday Night Football.</p><h2><b>49ers turn attention to Trent Williams after Brandon Aiyuk extension</b></h2><p>With just a week to go before the 49ers take on the Jets in the season opener, left tackle Trent Williams is still holding out. This has not been as talked about as Aiyuk’s situation was, because Aiyuk was with the team, holding in. Williams has not been with the team for all of training camp, and has been seeing an updated contract. It is unknown what exactly he is looking for in that regard, but he is undoubtedly looking for an upgrade.</p><p>The good news is that Williams is a veteran and likely will be able to get ready to play in games very shortly if the contract situation is figured out. The bad news is that Williams is arguably as important as anyone on the 49ers offense, and most believe he is more important than Aiyuk. It will be worth monitoring Williams’ status with the 49ers over the next week. Aiyuk had multiple trade suitors, including the Pittsburgh Steelers, looking for wide receiver help, but the 49ers waited it out and were able to keep their star pass catcher in town.</p><p><a href="https://www.si.com/nfl/takeaways-brandon-aiyuk-49ers-negotiations" rel="noopener">The Steelers were the primary team</a> in trade talks with San Francisco for the former Arizona State star, according to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer. However, the two sides got hung up on the inclusion of a current Steelers player, such as <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl-rumors-who-steelers-unwilling-trade-brandon-aiyuk">George Pickens or Pat Friermuth</a>.</p><p>“The Steelers came closest to acquiring Aiyuk,” Breer reported. “They refused to give up a current player, but were willing to part with second- and third-round picks. The interesting thing is the money wasn’t as good with the Steelers, who didn’t want to go past what T.J. Watt makes ($28 million APY) and as such offered Aiyuk $27.7 million APY. The Niners made calls to about a dozen teams to see if they could flip the third-rounder somewhere else to land a veteran receiver to replace Aiyuk in the lineup.”</p><h2><b>Brandon Aiyuk extension gives 49ers plenty of firepower</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Brandon-Aiyuk.jpg"><figcaption>Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>The 49ers had arguably the best offense in the NFL last season, and the Brandon Aiyuk extension ensures that, health permitting, that will be the case once again in 2024. Brock Purdy showed that he can be a near-perfect quarterback in Kyle Shanahan’s system last season, surprising everyone with his accuracy, anticipation and creativity, and all of his weapons are now back in 2024.</p><p>Aiyuk gives the 49ers a true No. 1 wideout on the outside, allowing them to use Deebo Samuel as a hybrid all over the field. Samuel can line up basically anywhere in the formation and be a threat to create an explosive play, which makes the 49ers so difficult to guard. George Kittle is still a monster after the catch while serving as a pseudo-offensive lineman in the run game, and Christian McCaffrey has a strong claim as the best running back in the NFL.</p><p>Shanahan is a genius calling plays, and always seems to find the right blend in the game to get all of his weapons involved at the right times. The will-they-won’t-they drama played out through the media, with trade options and contract offers flying all summer. Among those rumors was a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/steelers-news-pittsburgh-fans-shambles-brandon-aiyuk-browns-trade-rumors">potential trade with the Cleveland Browns</a>. Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated <a href="https://www.si.com/nfl/takeaways-brandon-aiyuk-49ers-negotiations" rel="noopener">reported the specifics</a> of the deal that almost landed the 49ers star in Cleveland.</p><p>“The Cleveland Browns were also in the mix. The Niners asked for second- and fifth-rounders and Amari Cooper for Aiyuk,” Breer wrote. “That, logistically, would’ve been tricky to pull off for Cleveland—the Browns had already given Cooper an $18.79 million signing bonus as part of his restructure/raise. That said, I did hear Cleveland would’ve been willing to do a three-year deal rather than a four-year extension with Aiyuk at a really good number.”</p><p>Aiyuk did not want to leave the 49ers to get his payday, hence why this deal did not get done. The Browns would have gotten the best wide receiver they have had since Josh Gordon’s last great season. The 49ers would have stocked their draft cabinet and gotten a weapon for Brock Purdy. It’s understandable why the 49ers were comfortable making that deal, but they are better off with him.</p><p>Last season, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/49ers-news-kyle-shanahan-gets-100-real-brandon-aiyuk-all-pro-nod">Aiyuk put up a career-high</a> 1,342 yards and added seven touchdowns. He solidified himself as one of the top receivers in the league and Brock Purdy’s favorite target. With Aiyuk back on the field, the 49ers have a great chance of finally winning the Super Bowl.</p><h2>Expectations for Brandon Aiyuk and 49ers in 2024</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Brandon-Aiyuk-with-San-Francisco-49ers.jpg"><figcaption>Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>The 49ers are coming off their second Super Bowl defeat at the hands of the Kansas City Chiefs in the Kyle Shanahan era. Aiyuk made three catches in each playoff game and scored just one touchdown in the run. In the Super Bowl, he was held to less than 50 yards and the offense only scored 22 points.</p><p>Aiyuk is the key pass catcher on the most stacked offense in the league. With Christian McCaffery, George Kittle, Deebo Samuel, and Aiyuk, they are set to have another awe-inspiring season on offense. They scored the third-most points in the league with 28.9 points per game last year and can improve on that number with a healthy season from McCaffery.</p><p>The 49ers have the <a href="https://sportsbook.fanduel.com/navigation/nfl?tab=super-bowl" rel="noopener">second-best odds</a> to win the Super Bowl, per FanDuel. Only the Chiefs are above them on the list. With Aiyuk in the fold officially, they are set to have another great season. Their biggest competition will be the Detroit Lions, who held <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lions-news-amon-ra-st-brownsstatement-loss-49ers-nfc-championship-game">a 24-7 lead at halftime of the NFC Championship Game</a> last year.</p><p>Don’t expect the 49ers to get off to the same start they did last year. They began with five straight wins in 2023 but 2024 features matchups with the Jets and Rams in the first three weeks. Considering Aiyuk had no preseason, it might be tough sledding for both the player and the team at the beginning of the season. Aiyuk is still a worthy pickup in fantasy. One move that seemed all but inevitable was New England acquiring San Francisco 49ers wideout Brandon Aiyuk. At the time, Aiyuk wanted to be paid like one of the NFL’s top receivers. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl-rumors-why-patriots-nixed-brandon-aiyuk-pursuit">Patriots were willing to pay Aiyuk top dollar</a>, but the trade eventually fell apart. So, for now, New England keeps searching for weapons to amplify Maye’s passing talent. However, rumors have emerged even after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/49ers-news-brandon-aiyuk-contract-saga-120-million-extension">Aiyuk agreed to a new contract with the 49ers</a>. If San Francisco hadn’t agreed with Aiyuk, the star wideout <a href="https://x.com/NBCSBoston/status/1830631180376445099" rel="noopener">might’ve been</a> a Patriot.</p><p>“If a deal had gotten done, it would’ve been for a 2025 second-round pick, a 2026 fourth-round pick, and Kendrick Bourne,” said NFL insider Albert Breer. “They had two proposals for Aiyuk on the table.</p><p>“I was told that of the teams in this, [the Patriots] had the strongest monetary offers in just about every way. They offered him a three-year deal at $90 million. They offered him a four-year deal that averaged $32.4 million per year.”</p><h2><b>Why didn’t Brandon Aiyuk sign with the Patriots?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Brandon-Aiyuk-Patriots-49ers.jpg"><figcaption>Brian Fluharty-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Breer then shared that New England offered a contract identical to what Aiyuk had signed with San Francisco, albeit on a shorter contract. The Patriots also offered Aiyuk a deal the same length as he signed with the 49ers but with a pay raise.</p><p>Clearly, in every single way, New England had the best financial offer for Aiyuk. But why didn’t he agree to a deal with the Patriots?</p><p>Unfortunately for New England, money wasn’t enough to land Aiyuk. Unfortunately, Aiyuk <a href="https://www.nbcsportsboston.com/nfl/new-england-patriots/brandon-aiyuk-patriots-failed-trade-49ers/637949/" rel="noopener">showed no interest in accepting</a> New England’s contract terms. The Patriots are expected to have one of the NFL’s worst offenses in 2024, with a journeyman veteran starting at quarterback behind a patchwork offensive line that struggled mightily in training camp and the preseason. Aiyuk doesn’t just want to be paid. He also wants to win – something he couldn’t accomplish in New England.</p><p>The 49ers, meanwhile, are just seven months removed from a Super Bowl appearance. They are expected to be one of the NFC’s best teams and return to the Super Bowl again this season. So if Aiyuk wants to win games, it’s not surprising he’s still in San Francisco despite New England’s best efforts.</p><p>With that opportunity now gone, the Patriots will remain in pursuit of a weapon to play next to Maye.
