However, coaches losing sleep over games likely won’t earn a smidge of sympathy from the fans.</p><h2><b>Cowboys trying to find a consistent path</b></h2><p>It may not be a good thing that Schottenheimer <a href="https://www.dallascowboys.com/news/dak-schotty-frustrated-at-inconsistent-cowboys-it-s-unacceptable?utm_source=bleacherreport&amp;utm_medium=referral" rel="noopener">took the blowout loss</a> as an opportunity to toss his coaches under the bus.</p><p>“When you look at it, I don’t think any of us coached or played well enough,” said Schottenheimer. “We did not play well. We did not coach well. I wasn’t very good today. I don’t think [Matt Eberflus] thinks he was very good today. Klayton [Adams] doesn’t think he was very good today.</p><p>“We’ll look at it. And we’ve got an extra day this week to get ready for Arizona, and that’s what we’re gonna do.”</p><p>And it doesn’t help Schottenheimer that his quarterback-leader isn’t happy.</p><p>“Yeah, I’m surprised,” said Dak Prescott. “I’m sure that’s a good word to use. Frustrated as well — frustrating. What we’ve been doing, what we’re capable of doing, didn’t really ever get going.</p><p>“We’ve got to be better in everything that we do. Led by quarterback Dak Prescott, Dallas is averaging 30.8 points per game. Their success could lead Dallas’ front office to execute a deal to improve their defense in hopes of a second-half playoff push, or, according to Cowlishaw, <a href="https://www.dallasnews.com/sports/cowboys/2025/10/27/george-pickens-trade-dallas-cowboys-nfl-deadline-rumors/" rel="noopener">trade away their leading receiver</a>, George Pickens, to maximize his value. </p><p>Pickens is in the middle of a career season with Dallas, tied for ninth in the NFL in targets and ranking third in receiving yards and first in yards after the catch. So why would Dallas trade away Prescott’s top target after acquiring him for a 2026 third-round pick and 2027 fifth-round pick from the Pittsburgh Steelers?</p><p>“Simple,” Cowlishaw states. “Dallas cannot afford to think about paying him after this season. With the numbers he has put up, all while not causing any of the disruptions that made the Steelers eager to move on without him, he’s a $30-million-a-year receiver. Easy. And if you think the franchise tag is an option, it projects at $28 million next season. In 2026, Dak Prescott has a $74 million salary cap number, according to overthecap.com. Lamb carries a $38.6 million figure. Javonte Williams is making a whopping $3 million this year and is deserving of at least a decent running back wage. But you want to add $28 million more for another wide receiver, even a really good one?”</p><p>Pickens is in the final year of his rookie contract, thus making Cowlishaw bullish on paying him. Pair that with the Parsons trade, and Cowlishaw believes the Cowboys should double down on their investment in getting younger, improving the defense, and avoiding the trap of a potential playoff push. </p><p>“The notion of winning by scoring at least 30 points every game is a failed exercise, ” Cowlishaw writes. “And thinking about ways to keep Pickens is the same as paying no attention to what happened on defense last year, what’s happening on defense this year, and what this defense will look like in 2026.”</p><p>The Cowboys’ defense is allowing 31.6 points per game, the second-worst clip in the league. What ended up being a disastrous blowout on the road, we’ll take a look at some of the parties that could be to blame on the Dallas Cowboys side for this loss.</p><p>With the loss, the Cowboys move into second place in the NFC East, holding the edge over the Washington Commanders thanks to their Week 4 tie against the Packers. His two interceptions on Sunday were also his first since Week 3 against Chicago, marring an otherwise great run that included 13 passing touchdowns during that stretch.</p><p>Dak Prescott should have an opportunity to bounce back against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 9, but there’s no question that his play against the Broncos directly resulted in the offense failing to move downfield for most of the game. Look for a much stronger showing in Week 9 as CeeDee Lamb has been due for a big showing.</p><p><b>Jerry Jones and the looming trade deadline</b></p><p>Since losing All-Pro Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers, Jerry Jones has been adamant about his intentions with the defense and the future direction of the roster. Many fans thought that Jones would be aggressive in the free agent and trade market to bulk up the defense, but <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/dallas-cowboys/cowboys-news-jerry-jones-rambling-take-pathetic-defense-will-leave-your-head-spinning">Jones has failed to make any significant moves</a> with the Nov. 4 deadline right around the corner.</p><p>While Jones continues to sing the same tune, the defense continues to see its woes from an <a href="https://www.dallascowboys.com/team/injury-report/">injury standpoint</a>. DB Trevon.Diggs has now missed two weeks with a concussion and new acquisition DT Kenny Clark was has been dealing with an elbow injury and safety Donovan Wilson was out last week (elbow/shoulder). There’s no question that the Dallas Cowboys have the talented needed to be successful, evident of their play without CeeDee Lamb in the lineup, but they seem to be missing aspects of execution and game management that could be to blame for some of these losses.</p><p>Since taking over in 2025, this defense has been historically bad under Matt Eberflus by Cowboys’ standards. They <a href="https://www.foxsports.com/articles/nfl/2025-nfl-defense-rankings-team-pass-and-rush-stats">rank last in the NFL</a> in total yards allowed per game (401.6) and have allowed the third-most touchdowns (24) to offenses. Their passing defense ranks dead-last (260.3 yds/g) while their rushing defense is third-worst (141.3 yds/g) in the league. They’ve allowed 30 or more points to opponents in five of their first eight games.</p><p>While the offense is humming and able to keep up with other teams on the scoreboard, it won’t be long until the defense completely collapses and things become unsustainable on the offensive side of the ball. Dallas got blown out 44-24 by Denver in a game where <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/nfl-stories/broncos-defense-cowboys-offense-advantage-week-8">their explosive offense just could not keep up</a>. Now many around the organization, including the team owner, are thinking about making a trade to try and address their ailing defense.</p><p>Cowboys owner Jerry Jones <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/46740452/cowboys-jerry-jones-willing-deal-trade-deadline-not-convinced-one-move-help-defense" rel="noopener">delivered a puzzling take</a> about a potential defensive trade after Sunday’s brutal loss.</p><p>“If I saw a proposition for us to help this team, no matter what this score was today, then I would look at it on the merits of helping the team,” Jones said. “I would completely look at the merits for both next week or the weeks after [and the longer term]. No, today would not affect a decision on trading for a player.”</p><p>Dallas is rumored to be <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/dallas-cowboys/cowboys-rumors-dallas-sniffing-around-defensive-player-trade-market">sniffing around the trade market</a> for defensive help. Sunday’s comments seem to reinforce that idea.</p><p>Jones kept talking and his explanation made less and less sense as he went on.</p><p>“I don’t know what’s realistic,” Jones said. “Could one better player — if we didn’t pay too big a price to have a better player on defense to possibly help? I’m not trying to be cute, but that’s why you’d go get him because you think that you could go help your defense. Are we one player away on defense? I think we’re not. I think we’re more than that away, but what we’re closer to than it looks, in my mind, is executing better on defense.”</p><p>At the very least, this explains why Dallas was comfortable <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/nfl-stories/micah-parsons-trade-grades-shocking-cowboys-packers-blockbuster">trading away Micah Parsons</a> instead of extending him.</p><h2><b>Cowboys’ defense could not stop Broncos in Week 8 blowout</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/full_046133.avif"><figcaption>Scott Kinser-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Dallas has played terrible defense for the entire 2025 season so far.</p><p>The Cowboys entered Sunday’s game ranked last in the NFL in yards allowed per game and <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/46740452/cowboys-jerry-jones-willing-deal-trade-deadline-not-convinced-one-move-help-defense" rel="noopener">30th in points allowed per game</a>, per ESPN. They did not perform any better against the Broncos.</p><p>Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer was clearly not happy with his defense after the game.</p><p>“When you look at it, I’m not just going to start with the defense,” Schottenheimer said. “I don’t think any of us coached and played well enough.”</p><p>Schottenheimer does not believe the Cowboys lack the players to play competent defense. Instead, he seems to blame coaching and effort for Sunday’s loss.</p><p>“At the end of the day, I think we have good enough players,” Schottenheimer said. “I think we did not play well tonight.”</p><p>Dallas needs to figure out whatever is causing their defensive woes and get it fixed ASAP.</p><p>Next up for the Cowboys is a Week 9 matchup against the Cardinals.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
