But his departure left the door open for a new leader.</p><p>The Commanders <a href="https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/austin-ekeler-tops-first-post-brian-robinson-backfield-depth-chart-in-washington" rel="noopener">released their updated depth chart</a> following the trade. Veteran Austin Ekeler is now listed as the No. 1 running back. Behind him are Jeremy McNichols, Chris Rodriguez, and rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt, who was selected in the seventh round.</p><p>Ekeler’s promotion marks a significant shift for Washington’s offense. The 30-year-old was once the lead back with the Los Angeles Chargers and showed flashes of his old form last season with the Commanders. He impressed at New Mexico with 1,190 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns before transferring to Arizona. However, eligibility issues limited his 2024 season. His explosiveness has been praised in training camp, and his strong preseason performance has fueled speculation that he could eventually become the team’s lead rusher.</p><p>Analysts have pointed out Ekeler’s proven ability near the goal line. He has consistently been one of the league’s most efficient scorers in close-range situations. Still, questions remain about whether Washington will lean heavily on him. Or will they gradually shift touches to Croskey-Merritt as he adjusts to the professional level?</p><p>The Commanders’ revamped depth chart illustrates how quickly roles can change in the NFL. And it <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/49ers-news-why-brian-robinson-jr-could-free-rental">could be a win-win for both teams</a>. Furthermore, here is Robinson’s <a href="https://x.com/957thegame/status/1960052220768211436" rel="noopener">first impression of</a> the 49ers and head coach Kyle Shanahan, according to a post on X by 95.7 The Game.</p><p>“I’m very aware of how Coach Shanahan likes to run his offense. He emphasized that when he called. I was like, look, you know what I’m about, and I’m ready to show you how I get down. I’ve been running the ball my whole life. Brian Robinson Jr. on his phone call with Shanahan”</p><h2><b>49ers RB Brian Robinson Jr adjusting to new team</b></h2><p>Shanahan said the 49ers plan to use Robinson as <a href="https://www.si.com/nfl/kyle-shanahan-details-plan-for-brian-robinson-jr-in-niners-offense" rel="noopener">the primary backup</a> to Christian McCaffrey, according to Sports Illustrated.</p><p>“We brought him here to be our two back,” Shanahan explained, around the 8:45 mark. “Always been a big fan of Brian. Loved him coming out of college. He’s done really well going against him, and we were pumped that he was available and we were pumped that we were able to get him.”</p><p>Does Robinson fit with the 49ers? That may not be known until the season gets going quite a bit. However, it appears he could play <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/46050618/san-francisco-49ers-receivers-brandon-aiyuk-jauan-jennings-brian-robinson-jr" rel="noopener">an important situational role</a>, according to ESPN.</p><p>“McCaffrey will remain the focal point of San Francisco’s running game, but Robinson provides an experienced backup who could offer some value in short-yardage situations,” Nick Wagoner wrote. “In 2024, Robinson was third in the league on a third or fourth down of 3 or fewer yards (7.8 yards per carry), though the sample size was just 14 attempts. The 49ers, meanwhile, were 18th in the league in those situations, averaging 3.2 yards per rush.”</p><p>Also, Robinson provides protection for the backfield. McCaffrey has a checkered injury history, as does now-No. 3-back Isaac Guerendo.</p><p>Robinson has appeared in 41 games and totaled 2,329 career yards with a 4.1 yard-per-carry average. Robinson figures to add another skill positional weapon to help out <a href="http://nson-jr-could-free-rental">a 49ers offense</a> led by newly resigned 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy.</p><p>On Monday, Robinson took part in his first practice with his new 49ers teammates and had <a href="https://x.com/LombardiHimself/status/1960049557834018981" rel="noopener">a fitting comparison</a> for the experience.</p><p>“It’s like the first day of school. I was lost in the hallway for a second. But I made it for my first day of class,” said Robinson, per David Lombardi of The SF Standard on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>Lombardi also mentioned that Robinson had exchanged pleasantries with 49ers star running back Christian McCaffrey as well, who missed the majority of last season due to injury.</p><h2><b>A big year for the 49ers</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Shanahan-during-preseason.jpg"><figcaption>Sergio Estrada-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Less than two years ago, the San Francisco 49ers very nearly conquered the NFL world, having lost in heartbreaking fashion to the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2023-24 Super Bowl. Unfortunately, Super Bowl hangover proved to be a very real thing for the 49ers last year, as a combination of injuries and regression up and down the roster caused San Francisco to miss the playoffs altogether in 2024.</p><p>Among the most notable injuries were both McCaffrey and Brandon Aiyuk, who had just finished up his contract saga with the 49ers’ front office prior to the start of last season, only to get injured very quickly into the new campaign.</p><p>However, with McCaffrey and Aiyuk back in the lineup, the 49ers hope to once again retake their spot among the elite offenses in the league. Brian Robinson should also help out in that department, and he’ll give San Francisco a nice insurance policy in case McCaffrey were to go down with another injury, which has been an issue for the star over the years.</p><p>In any case, the 49ers have less than two weeks to tune up before they kick off their 2025 season on the road against the Seattle Seahawks on September 7 shortly after 4:00 PM ET.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The Niners pulled off one of the biggest trades of the preseason when they agreed to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/nfl-stories/49ers-news-san-francisco-commanders-agree-to-brian-robinson-trade">acquire running back Brian Robinson Jr. from the Washington Commanders</a>.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/nfl-stories/grading-49ers-commanders-brian-robinson-jr-trade">San Francisco got Robinson for a fairly cheap price</a>, sending just a sixth-round pick back to the nation’s capital in return for him. Now, that pick has gotten some more clarity on where it will come. The 49ers have a pair of sixth-rounders in the 2026 NFL Draft, and the Commanders will get <a href="https://x.com/MaioccoNBCS/status/1959980623017525638" rel="noopener">whichever one comes later in the draft</a> according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.</p><p>“The sixth-round 2026 selection the 49ers will send to Washington for RB Brian Robinson is a conditional pick,” Maiocco reported on X, formerly Twitter. “The 49ers had two selections in the sixth: Their own and one coming from Minnesota in the Jordan Mason trade. Washington will get the pick that comes later in the round.”</p><p>That was somewhat of a surprising price tag for Robinson, who has been a consistent producer over his three seasons in Washington. He has racked up 17 total touchdowns over the last two seasons and should be able to play a role in Kyle Shanahan’s offense immediately.</p><p>The Commanders seem to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/hbcu/jacory-croskey-merritt-makes-major-statement-with-first-nfl-touchdown">love rookie running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt</a>, one of the stars of training camp and the preseason, and this trade should open up more of a role for him in the regular season (take note, fantasy managers!).</p><p>On the 49ers side, Robinson provides reliable insurance in case Christian McCaffrey suffers from injuries again in 2025 like he did during the 2024 season. Most running backs are able to thrive in Shanahan’s scheme, and Robinson should be no different even if he projects to get limited usage early in the year with McCaffrey healthy and ready to go.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Friday morning, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/49ers-news-san-francisco-commanders-agree-to-brian-robinson-trade">Robinson Jr. was traded to the San Francisco 49ers</a> in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round draft pick. Robinson Jr. was deemed inactive in the Commanders’ most recent preseason game, signaling an end to the relationship.</p><p>The Commanders reportedly are happy with the depth they have at the running back position. Meanwhile, the 49ers are once again dealing with injuries across the board. Rookie RB Jordan James has missed most of training camp. Patrick Taylor was <a href="https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/49ers-sign-qb-nate-sudfeld-place-rb-patrick-taylor-on-ir#:~:text=In%20a%20corresponding%20move%2C%20the,through%20their%20final%20preseason%20game." rel="noopener">placed on injured reserve</a> with a shoulder injury, and even backup tailback Isaac Guerendo has been dealing with a shoulder injury himself.</p><p>All of that is on top of the insane <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/49ers-news-kyle-shanahan-brandon-aiyuks-injury-return-date">injury issues the 49ers have dealt with at wide receiver</a>. Clearly, this was a much-needed move for San Fran, while Washington was just looking to make a deal.</p><p>So, let’s grade the Brian Robinson Jr. trade from the Commanders to the 49ers.</p><h2><b>Grading Brian Robinson Jr. trade</b></h2><h2><b>49ers get RB Brian Robinson Jr.</b></h2><p>As mentioned, the 49ers were in a bit of a pickle at the running back position. With injuries hitting the RB room before the season even begins, the lack of depth was concerning. That does not even include the fact that starting tailback Christian McCaffrey is injury-prone himself. He is healthy right now, but <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/49ers-news-christian-mccaffrey-return-practice-achilles-injury">CMC suffered Achilles tendinitis</a> last season, costing him eight games. Upon his return, he suffered a sprained PCL and missed the final five games of the regular season.</p><p>But that only tells a snipped of <a href="https://www.draftsharks.com/fantasy/injury-history/christian-mccaffrey/7750" rel="noopener">his checkered history</a>.</p><p>Enter Brian Robinson Jr..</p><p>The former Alabama Crimson Tide standout has been in the league for three seasons. His rookie season was marred by injury, after Robinson Jr. sustained a gun shot wound that cost him the first six games.</p><p>Over the last two years, he amassed 365 carries for 1,532 rushing yards with 13 rushing touchdowns. He has proven to be a competent running back. At 6-foot-1, 228 pounds, he is a bruiser with a nose for the goal line.</p><p>But he is yet to play a full season, having missed at least a few games in all three seasons. So, this move does not entirely alleviate injury concerns at the running back position.</p><p>The 49ers just got Guerendo back into camp after his minor shoulder issue. Guerendo excelled in place of McCaffrey last season to the tune of a 5.0 yards per carry on 84 carries. So, it stands to reason that both Robinson Jr. and Guerendo will split backup duties.</p><p><b>Grade: B+</b></p><h2><b>Commanders get 2026 6th Round Draft Pick</b></h2><p>It is somewhat wild has this has come about.</p><p>With Robinson entering the final year of his rookie contract, he was looking for a lucrative extension. That was something the Commanders were not looking to give him. Instead, Washington saved $3.3 million in cap space sending him to the NFC West.</p><p>Last season, veteran Austin Ekeler split time with Robinson Jr. in the backfield. Ekeler, albeit not the same player he was in his prime, was still productive. He rushed 77 times for 367 yards and four touchdowns, with a 4.8 ypc. He also reeled in 35 of 41 targets from rookie standout Jayden Daniels for another 366 yards.</p><p>It stands to reason he will open the season as the starting running back. But at 30 years old, that may not last long.</p><p>Reports out of Washington’s camp are that rookie tailback Jacory Croskey-Merritt has looked phenomenal. That must not be hyperbole either if the Commanders felt comfortable enough to trade Robinson Jr. to a conference foe.</p><p>They also have Jeremy McNichols and Chris Rodriguez Jr., who both ran the ball well last season.</p><p>But this move is still risky. Two days after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/chiefs-news-kansas-city-trading-skyy-moore-nfc-contender">trading for Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Skyy Moore</a>, the Niners are now looking to retool another skill position. The Washington Commanders are <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/baltimore-ravens/ravens-2-surprise-preseason-roster-cuts-before-week-1" rel="noopener">sending running back Brian Robinson to the Bay for a sixth-round pick</a>, per Adam Schefter.</p><p>Robinson was selected by the Commanders with their third-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. After missing part of his rookie season due to a shooting incident, the former Alabama running back came back the same year and played 12 games. He finished his rookie year with 797 yards and two touchdowns.</p><p>Last season, Robinson played in 13 games, finishing the season with 789 yards and eight touchdowns. He primarily shared snaps with Austin Ekeler and Jeremy McNichols, playing just under 50% of the total snaps on offense for the Commanders.</p><p>Robinson’s role will drastically change with the 49ers. Instead of being the lead running back, Robinson will most likely be the primary backup to Christian McCaffrey. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/49ers-news-insider-gives-bouncy-christian-mccaffrey-update">McCaffrey missed most of 2024 due to an Achilles injury </a>he sustained during training camp. By the time he returned, the 49ers were out of playoff contention. As a result, McCaffrey played in only four games.</p><p>Considering McCaffrey’s lengthy injury history, trading for a starting-caliber running back as their backup is a great idea for the 49ers. In McCaffrey’s last healthy season, he was used in over 76% of the Niners’ snaps on offense. Now the Commanders are taking another step that hints at a potential trade on the horizon.</p><p>The Commanders <a href="https://x.com/ZachSelbyWC/status/1958221113369985485" rel="noopener">have excused</a> RB Brian Robinson Jr. from practice today, head coach Dan Quinn said per Zach Selby.</p><p>Washington is reportedly hopeful for a resolution soon.</p><p>This trade comes <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/washington-commanders/commanders-news-terry-mclaurin-requests-trade-contract-dispute">amid receiver Terry McLaurin’s request to be traded</a> over a contract dispute.</p><p>NFL roster cutdown is less than a week away. That means the Commanders will not have much time to get a deal done before the regular season.</p><p>If the Commanders do trade Robinson, there will be a massive void to fill at running back.</p><p>Veteran Austin Ekeler and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/hbcu/commanders-rookie-jacory-croskey-merritt-wants-to-be-called-bill">rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt</a> would likely be the main beneficiaries.</p><h2><b>Commanders RB Brian Robinson Jr. drawing significant interest amid trade rumors</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Brian-Robinson.jpg"><figcaption>Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>There is apparently a great deal of interest around Brian Robinson.</p><p>NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo weighed in on the situation in a recent interview. Garafolo explained that many NFL teams are <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/washington-commanders/commanders-news-what-teams-asking-brian-robinson-jr-amid-trade-interest">asking themselves why Robinson is suddenly available</a>.</p><p>“I know there’s interest because, as I’ve reported this, I’ve heard from teams that are saying, “What happened there?” How did he fall out of favor? Does he want a new contract? Yeah, I mean, eventually he does,” Garafolo added. “But this is a contract year, and right now, given this situation, my understanding is he wants the best possible situation for him to have the best possible season to set him up for a payday this offseason as a free agent.”</p><p>Garafolo believes that Robinson will have his pick of landing spots. But it remains to be seen whether that will happen because of a trade, or simply by being released.</p><p>“So, right now, all about fit for Brian Robinson. I believe he’s going to have a new home. If that happens, the Bears could consider making a claim rather than sacrificing draft capital.</p><p>For now, Chicago appears content to sort through its options. Johnson’s offense relies on balance and versatility. The Bears believe their line can create enough openings for whoever lines up behind Swift. Coach <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/washington-commanders/commanders-news-dan-quinn-hints-brian-robinson-jr-exit">Dan Quinn confirmed the Commanders’ plans for Robinson Jr.</a> as he was also inactive in Monday’s 31-17 preseason loss against the Cincinnati Bengals.</p><p>After the loss, Quinn released a statement that the Commanders and Robinson Jr. would be going their separate ways, which means <a href="https://twitter.com/MikeGarafolo/status/1957951442494366039" rel="noopener">a potential trade</a> should be coming down the pike soon, per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.</p><p>“Brian Robinson Jr. did not play, and Dan Quinn pretty much, confirming that they’re going to move on from Robinson here,” Garafolo said. “He is set to make a total of $3.5 million per this season in the final year of his deal. But he said he doesn’t make everything public. That includes his conversation with Robinson.</p><p>“Yeah, I’ll keep that between us,” Quinn said. “News like that, it’s not always that easy, but he’s somebody that we respect a lot. That’s for sure.”</p><p>Robinson is entering the final year of his rookie contract. He finished second to quarterback Jayden Daniels in rushing last year with 799 yards and totaled eight touchdowns. However, those yards marked a career high. Robinson hasn’t been able to break loose with an above-average NFL season in any of his three years.</p><p>Another problem for Robinson has been the emergence of Bill Croskey-Merritt. The seventh-round rookie has been turning heads, and probably solidified his bigger role with a 27-yard touchdown run against the Bengals on Monday night.</p><p>Quinn said the Commanders have been surprisingly deep in the backfield.</p><p>“Going into training camp, we really thought this was a deep room,” Quinn said. “There would be real competition. Demetric Felton and Kazmeir (Allen), Bill (Jacory Croskey-Merritt), and Eck (Austin Ekeler).</p><p>“And so we knew this was one of our strengths going into training camp. Felt that we had tight end and then again, at running back. So we wanted to let it play out and go through it. However, the word is out, and here are the four best destinations for Robinson amid the Commanders trade rumors.</p><p>First, let’s be real about Robinson. In three seasons, he hasn’t shown anything spectacular. He gained 797, 733, and 799 yards in those years. He scored 2, 5, and 8 touchdowns. Robinson has looked like a plodder, a guy who can get some tough yards, but he has almost zero breakaway ability. His longest runs were 24 and 29 yards in his first two years, and 40 last year. But he’s a three-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust guy.</p><p>So, it shouldn’t be shocking that the Commanders could trade him. That’s especially true with the emergence of rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt, who could be primed for a bigger role than anyone imagined when the Commanders plucked him in the seventh round of the NFL Draft.</p><p>So here are the possible destinations:</p><h2><b>San Francisco 49ers</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/X-best-Brian-Robinson-Jr.-destinations-amid-Commanders-trade-rumors.jpg"><figcaption>Geoff Burke-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Robinson would be a great fit behind Christian McCaffrey, and he’s the type of running back Kyle Shanahan would enjoy having.</p><p>What’s odd is Robinson is also the type of back Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury said <a href="https://x.com/JPFinlayNBCS/status/1956395571184353296" rel="noopener">he enjoys having</a>, according to a post on X by JP Finlay.</p><p>“Kliff Kingsbury on Brian Robinson: He’s a guy that when you put the pads on and you really practice full speed, is when he really shows up. I thought he had his best practice against New England when we did the competition versus them before the game.”</p><p>Kingsbury has been singing Robinson’s praises <a href="https://www.si.com/nfl/commanders/news/washington-commanders-brian-robinson-jr-has-new-focus-going-2025" rel="noopener">throughout the preseason</a>, according to Sports Illustrated.</p><p>“He’s been really focused,” Kingsbury said. “The biggest thing that came out of last year, I think, was that any of the guys that we asked to go in and play played at a really high level. B-Rob’s a guy who has played an incredibly high level. I thought early in the year, when he was really healthy, he was what we expect him to be. And the focus this offseason has been great. He knows what this year means to him and can mean to us when he plays at that level.”</p><p>Of course, the 49ers have a great back in McCaffrey. But depth is welcome in the NFL. And the 49ers are already having injury worries with Isaac Guerendo, Jordan James, and Patrick Taylor Jr. all holding the dreaded questionable tag.</p><p>Robinson’s size and power would be the perfect complement to McCaffrey. And with Commanders general manager Adam Peters’ connections with the 49ers, he might be able to work out a deal that satisfies both teams. Thus, the 49ers are the prime landing spot.</p><p>Another possible landing spot, at least according to some outlets, is Dallas. However, the Commanders aren’t going to make a trade that possibly strengthens the Cowboys at their weakest position. Forget that possibility.</p><h2><b>Houston Texans</b></h2><p>With Joe Mixon dealing with an injury, the Texans may make a deal for Robinson. They have Nick Chubb in the second-team spot, but there are many questions about whether he could deliver as a full-time guy after all of his injuries. Behind Chubb is Dameon Pierce, who has proven he’s not the best option for a team with Super Bowl aspirations.</p><p>Houston can’t afford to pluck around without backfield strength if they want to win games early in the season. And Robinson might give them the bridge back to a healthy Mixon, who wouldn’t have to rush back and risk re-injury.</p><h2><b>Kansas City Chiefs</b></h2><p>It’s not a pretty sight in the Chiefs’ backfield. Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt averaged 3.7 and 3.6 yards per carry, respectively, last season. A team with the expectations of the Chiefs needs better than that.</p><p>And even though the Commanders haven’t been high on Robinson, he did average 4.3 yards per carry in 2024. So that’s much better than Pacheco and Hunt. Robinson would amount to an insurance policy, too. If Pacheco doesn’t regain his tough running and burst from the previous leg injury, Robinson could be the guy to produce well in a Patrick Mahomes-led offense.</p><h2><b>Los Angeles Chargers</b></h2><p>The Chargers have a potentially strong backfield with Najee Harris leading the way and rookie Omarion Hampton as the backup. But remember that Jim Harbaugh loves a tough running style. Robinson would be a perfect fit for what Harbaugh loves to have in the backfield.</p><p>And it’s not that Robinson would replace Harris or Hampton. He would provide insurance if Harris’ eye injury keeps him out longer than hoped. And he would provide a good tandem with Hampton, who doesn’t need to be thrust into a heavy role as a rookie.</p><p>Bottom line: The Commanders probably won’t trade Robinson. That’s because most NFL teams see what the Commanders see. He has a limited ceiling, and he’s not the kind of player who makes a splash difference.
