While the report said that a trade was unlikely, Jacksonville was not completely shutting the door on a Thomas Jr trade.</p><p>Jaguars head coach Liam Coen<a href="https://x.com/Schultz_Report/status/1982838258133594454" rel="noopener"> quickly shut down these rumors.</a> Speaking to reporters during their bye week, Coen firmly said that “We have no plans on moving Brian Thomas Jr at all,” according to Jordan Schultz. The coach also said that the bye week was the perfect time for Thomas Jr to reset and hopefully lock in for the next few weeks.</p><p>Thomas Jr had an electric rookie season for the Jaguars, finishing with over 1,200 yards last season. The hope for the Jaguars was that the sophomore would continue his great performance in Year 2. While they drafted Travis Hunter with the second overall pick, Jacksonville was looking at Thomas Jr to evolve into a true WR1 threat.</p><p>Instead, Thomas Jr’s biggest flaws were amplified this season. Even in his breakout rookie year, the Jaguars wide receiver had a few questionable drops, finishing with seven drops on the year. Through seven games this season, Thomas Jr has already had more drops with nine, for an abysmal 16.4% drop rate. His struggles catching the ball in the middle of the field have severely neutered his ability to make a play.</p><p>Thomas Jr’s struggles this season are a key reason why the Jaguars have been struggling to gain any sort of consistency this season on offense. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/jacksonville-jaguars/4-1-jaguars-proved-theyre-contender-material-with-late-comeback-to-beat-chiefs">They scored a big win over the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 5,</a> but have since lost their next two games to the Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams. One of the biggest reasons for the confusion around the Jaguars is their shaky offensive production.</p><p>One of the biggest reasons behind the Jaguars’ inconsistency on offense is Brian Thomas Jr’s regression. After an excellent final stretch of games in 2024, many expected the second-year wideout to take a big leap this season. However, Thomas has struggled in spurts this season and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/jacksonville-jaguars/jaguars-news-brian-thomas-jr-practices-wrist-injury-nightmare-game">has dealt with injuries as well</a>. He’s had problems catching the ball, sporting one of the worst drop rates in the league.</p><p>Thomas Jr is still in his second year, so there’s room to believe that the Jaguars wide receiver will still improve over the course of his career. Still, that has apparently not stopped Jacksonville from <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6747218/2025/10/25/nfl-trade-rumors-news-aj-brown-jerry-jones-targets/" rel="noopener">exploring its options at the upcoming trade deadline</a>. Dianna Russini said in her report for The Athletic that “The Jaguars are listening on calls for WR Brian Thomas Jr., even if a move feels highly unlikely.”</p><p>Drafted in the first round by the Jaguars in 2024, Brian Thomas Jr was one of the biggest standouts last season for the team. He had 1,282 receiving yards last season and ten touchdowns, planting himself firmly in Offensive Rookie of the Year talks last season. Thomas Jr was hyped up to be one of the best young wide receivers in the league. A breakout 2025 campaign seemed all but guaranteed.</p><p>However, Thomas Jr has not played up to his potential this season. He currently has the most drops in the NFL (nine drops according to Pro Football Reference) and has the second-highest drop rate in the league at 16.4%. After beating the Carolina Panthers in Week 1, 26-10, Trevor Lawrence and the Jags fell prey to the Cincinnati Bengals on the road in Week 2 to the tune of a 31-27 score.</p><p>Up ahead of Jacksonville is a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/jacksonville-jaguars/jaguars-biggest-headache-qb-trevor-lawrence-or-wr-brian-thomas-jr">date back home this coming Sunday</a> against CJ Stroud and the winless Houston Texans. There have been questions about the availability of one key Jaguars player heading into that matchup, as it was reported that wide receiver <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/jacksonville-jaguars/jaguars-news-brian-thomas-jr-wrist-injury-after-bengals-loss">Brian Thomas Jr. dealt with a wrist injury last week</a>.</p><p>Although Thomas managed to see action against the Bengals, his wrist could be a reason behind his slow start to the 2025 campaign. Nevertheless, Thomas was <a href="https://x.com/Jaguars/status/1968419695150711049" rel="noopener">able to have a full practice</a> on Wednesday, as shared by the team, inspiring further hope that he’ll be on the field when the Jags host the Texans this weekend.</p><p>Thomas was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/fantasy-sports/top-5-fantasy-football-breakout-candidates-wide-receiver-2025">among the most-hyped Jaguars players</a> entering the 2025 season, thanks to his solid rookie campaign in the NFL.</p><p>Selected 23rd overall in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, the former LSU Tigers star recorded a total of 1,282 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns on 87 receptions and 87 targets in his first year in the league. He had 141 receiving yards and a touchdown on six catches and eight targets in his first two games in 2024.</p><p>Over the same stretch in 2025, Thomas only has 60 receiving yards to show with zero touchdowns despite 19 targets. Thomas snagged just five of those looks, leaving many to wonder whether he’s being hampered by an injury.</p><p>At the moment, Thomas is just fourth among Jacksonville players in terms of total receiving yards, behind wide receivers Dyami Brown and Parker Washington and tight end Brenton Strange. Also, the numbers show a big problem with the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/jacksonville-jaguars/jaguars-news-1-image-bad-things-trevor-lawrence-travis-hunter-brian-thomas-jr">connection between Brian Thomas Jr. and Trevor Lawrence</a>. But who is the Jaguars’ biggest headache between those players?</p><p>This isn’t a two-game revelation. Mac Jones started the last eight games of the 2024 season for the Jaguars. Not so coincidentally, Thomas became an NFL elite receiver during that stretch. He finished with three 100-yard games out of four, and totaled 91 yards in the other.</p><p>So is Lawrence the Thomas killer? Or is there something wrong with Thomas this year?</p><h2><b>Jaguars WR Brian Thomas off to bad start</b></h2><p>There’s no way to sugarcoat the depth of Thomas’ start. He has been targeted 19 times, but caught only five passes for 60 yards. That’s incredibly poor.</p><p>So it’s Lawrence, right? His <a href="https://www.sharpfootballanalysis.com/analysis/nfl-week-2-recap-jaguars-receiver-drops-offensive-struggles/" rel="noopener">numbers are bad</a>, according to sharpfootballanalysis.com.</p><p>“[Lawrence] has completed less than 59% of his passes, #27 in the NFL,” Warren Sharp wrote. “Adjusting for the short target depth, Lawrence ranks #32 in the NFL in completion percentage over expectation.”</p><p>Ick. But wait, maybe it’s not all Lawrence.</p><p>“The bad news for the Jaguars, but good news for Lawrence, is that it’s not Lawrence’s inaccuracy that is causing the majority of the problems,” Sharp wrote. “Through two games, 33% of Lawrence’s incompletions have been the result of receiver error. A whopping 11% of all Lawrence’s pass attempts are being dropped by his receivers, the #1 highest of any QB. It’s even worse in the red zone. Over 21% of all Lawrence’s passes have been dropped.”</p><p>However, take away the drops, and Lawrence still doesn’t come out looking good.</p><p>“His 21% pressure rate was the #7 lowest of any QB last week,” Sharp wrote.</p><p>But let’s dig a little deeper. Lawrence has thrown the ball to Thomas 19 times. Thomas has one drop. Granted, it came on fourth-and-five from the Bengals’ 7-yard line when the Jaguars could have pretty much put the game away. But that means 11 of the 12 missed connections reside on Lawrence’s doorstep. And since Lawrence is getting good protection, why doesn’t the blame land on his front porch?</p><h2><b>What about Trevor Lawrence’s history?</b></h2><p>Lawrence had a very good second NFL season. He earned Pro Bowl honors, making a nice bounce-back from his 17-interception rookie debut. However, Lawrence has been mediocre since 2022. Last year, he had 11 touchdown passes and seven picks in 10 games. This year, he’s at 4 TDs and three interceptions in two games. Check that for pace, and it’s a ton of picks over the course of the season.</p><p>Head coach Liam Coen <a href="https://www.jaguars.com/news/k000469-tuesday-insider-coen-pleased-with-lawrence-progress" rel="noopener">said he believes</a> Lawrence is fine, according to jaguars.com.</p><p>“I’m pleased with where he is – absolutely,” Coen said. “I thought he took big steps from last week to this week,” Coen said. “He made some unbelievable throws in that game. There are definitely a few he would like to have back, and there are calls I’d like to have back. There are plays everybody would like to have back, but I am pleased with where he is in terms of the strides he made from Week 1 to Week 2.</p><p>“I was very pleased with the way he showed something. He got ticked off at times. [But] he had great dialogue with his teammates on the sidelines. He made some huge throws for us in critical moments.”</p><p>So, where do the Jaguars go from here? First, they must get Thomas involved early against the Texans in an important AFC South showdown. The program in Baton Rouge has a history of producing some of the best receivers in the NFL currently, with Justin Jefferson and Ja’Marr Chase both being former Tigers.</p><p>Thomas Jr. appeared ready to take that next step into that elite tier this year after a stellar rookie season. He caught 87 passes for 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns.</p><p>When <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/jacksonville-jaguars/nfl-rumors-liam-coen-to-earn-12-million-year-jaguars-head-coach">Jacksonville signed former Buccaneers OC Liam Coen</a> as their new head coach, it was believed this offense would immediately be taken to another level. In their game against the Bengals, Lawrence targeted Thomas 12 times, but he only came down with four receptions for 49 yards. Lawrence targeted Hunter six times, and he only came down with three receptions for 22 yards.</p><p>Those two are supposed to be the top receivers on the team, and it’s good that they’re getting the most targets, but the connection just doesn’t seem as on point as it should be. The season is still early, so they still have some time to find some chemistry, and both Thomas and Hunter should expect to have some breakout games soon.</p><h2><b>Trevor Lawrence and Liam Coen have moment vs. Bengals</b></h2><p>Outside of Lawrence not being able to connect with Thomas and Hunter, he missed another receiver in the fourth quarter while they were trying to extend their lead. That <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/jacksonville-jaguars/jaguars-news-trevor-lawrence-caught-blowing-off-liam-coen-tense-moment-vs-bengals">led to head coach Liam Coen telling Lawrence</a> to hit his receivers in the chest when throwing them the ball, and it looked like the quarterback waved him off.</p><p>Coen was <a href="https://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/breaking-news/article/trevor-lawrence-waves-off-liam-coen-after-inaccurate-pass-just-before-jaguars-fail-to-convert-in-last-second-loss-201551230.html" rel="noopener">asked about the moment</a> after the game, but he downplayed it.</p><p>“It was just one throw. I was pissed. It is what it is. That’s emotion. It’s not personal, ever. That’s just kinda me getting worked up,” Coen said via Chris Cwik of Yahoo Sports. “I was very pleased with [Lawrence’s] competitive nature. The way he stayed calm on the sidelines, he’s pretty even-keel, which is good for me. I need that.”</p><p>The Jaguars went for it on fourth down two plays later, and Lawrence hit Thomas, but he couldn’t hold on to the ball. Weeks before the NFL Draft, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/ncaa-football/lsu-football-news-kyren-lacy-passes-away-nfl-draft">Lacy tragically died by suicide in Houston</a>. The last time Thomas Jr. spoke to Kyren was after the two were training together ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft.</p><p>Thomas Jr. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vlv13xS-Wls" rel="noopener">opened up</a> about the last conversation he had with Lacy, per The Pivot podcast.</p><p>“That’s been a tough one for me because I was with Kyren like two weeks before it happened,” Thomas Jr. said. “So we were on our way home. We were training together in Texas, and we were on our way home, and we were just talking. We drove home. So we were just talking the whole way, and as I remember, he kept asking me how I was mentally — kept asking me how I was mentally.</p><p>“And I mean I was answering him but I knew something was like going on. So I kept asking him how he was because he never like, he always asked me that before, but he never like really kept asking. So I mean for him to keep asking, I knew something, you know,” Thomas Jr. added.</p><p>Thomas Jr. plans to do a special celebration tribute in the end zone in honor of Kyren Lacy during the 2025 NFL season.</p><p>“I’ll probably try to do the same thing: a couple celebrations or stuff he had. I mean, I can’t really dance, so I’m going to go practice it a little bit,” Thomas Jr. added. “It might not be as good as his was, but I’m gonna have to go practice a little bit. But I’ll probably try to do the same. Some of their key players will be returning, including second-year wide receiver <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/editorials/grading-brian-thomas-jr-s-2024-nfl-draft-landing-spot-with-jaguars">Brian Thomas Jr., who had a solid rookie season</a> last season.</p><p>Thomas recently <a href="https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-every-team-highest-graded-rookie-since-2006#JAX">received an honor</a> from PFF as the Jaguars’ highest-rated rookie of last season.</p><p>“Thomas’ 1,282 receiving yards ranked third in the NFL, and he was the focal point of an offense that didn’t get much production behind him,” PFF wrote. “His receiving metrics were up there with the best of them, with top-five marks in yards after the catch (572) and yards per route run (2.45). Thomas and 2025 second-overall pick Travis Hunter are now set to form one of the NFL’s most explosive wide receiver duos for years to come.”</p><p>If Thomas can build off the season that he had last season, the Jaguars’ offense could have the potential to be one of the better units in the league, especially with Travis Hunter added to the fold.</p><h2><b>Brian Thomas Jr. looking to build off strong rookie season </b></h2><p>The Jaguars dealt with a lot of injuries and inconsistent play last season, and that led to them being one of the worst teams in the league. With everybody coming back healthy and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/jaguars-news-liam-coen-buccaneers-face-jacksonville-contract-agreement">adding a new coaching staff</a>, this team should take a drastic leap from what they looked like last season. The offense should be more explosive with Thomas and Hunter on the field together, and Trevor Lawrence should be more efficient throwing to those two.</p><p>The defense has the chance to improve as well, and Hunter may be able to play a few snaps on that side of the ball, depending on what the Jaguars plan to do with him.</p><p>There are still some uncertainties on the roster, such as the future of Travis Etienne, who didn’t show up to OTAs after the Jaguars added two running backs in the draft. Etienne had a down year last season, as he only rushed for two touchdowns, which was completely different from the season before, when he had 11.</p><p>All signs are pointing to the Jaguars having a bounce-back season, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if they were fighting for a playoff spot late in the season.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Jacksonville is expected to have Travis Etienne Jr. and Brian Thomas Jr. <a href="https://x.com/RapSheet/status/1852971221077418479" rel="noopener">available in its next game</a>, per NFL Network. Both have been hampered by injuries.</p><p>The team is playing Philadelphia on Sunday. Jacksonville is struggling this season with a 2-6 record, and has been one of the biggest disappointments in the NFL. The team started out the year with a 0-4 record, but has won two of the last four.</p><p>Jacksonville is banged up heading into the game. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jaguars-tank-bigsby-gets-encouraging-update-ahead-of-eagles-clash">Several offensive players are hurt</a>, including Thomas and Etienne. Running back Tank Bigsby is expected to play with an injured ankle, and wide receiver Gabe Davis is doubtful.</p><p>Thomas is a rookie wide receiver who has put up some solid numbers this year. Etienne entered the season as the team’s top running back.</p><h2>Jaguars can still salvage a miserable campaign</h2><p>Jacksonville entered the 2024 campaign with high expectations. Last offseason, the team gave <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jaguars-news-trevor-lawrence-contract-details-ugly-if-he-doesnt-turn-things-around">a massive contract extension</a> to quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Lawrence got hurt at the end of the 2023 season, which saw the Jags stumble down the stretch.</p><p>The Jaguars were expected to compete for the AFC South division title this season, with a healthy Lawrence back under center. It just hasn’t worked out. Jacksonville has lost game after game in disappointing fashion, and the team is third in the division. Jacksonville is also a disappointing 0-4 on the road this season.</p><p>Both Etienne and Thomas are key players in the offense. This season, Etienne has rushed for 230 yards and two touchdowns, on 56 carries. Thomas has 33 receptions for 573 yards and five touchdowns. The rookie from LSU is quickly becoming the top target in the team’s passing game.</p><p>Jacksonville and the Eagles play Sunday at 4:05 Eastern.
