The first-year coach has already replaced his starting quarterback, Bryce Young, the No. 1 overall pick in last year’s NFL Draft, with veteran Andy Dalton.</p><p>Dalton looks to be a short answer to a long problem. He looked magnificent in his first start of the season against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 3. The 36-year-old went 26-for-37 for 319 yards with three touchdowns in the Panthers’ 36-22 win, their only one of the season thus far.</p><p>To no one’s surprise, the overreactions came aplenty, with some believing that Dalton could be the problem solver to salvage this season for the Panthers. However, after just three games, that doesn’t seem to be the case.</p><p>The competition, for one, has gotten tougher, while the points scored have continued to decrease week by week. Against the Cincinnati Bengals, Dalton was 25-for-40 with 220 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception in a 34-24 loss. But against a much tougher Bears defense on Sunday, Dalton’s true colors showed.</p><p>The 14-year veteran completed just 18-of-28 pass attempts for 136 yards, with no touchdowns and one interception, while taking three sacks in an absolute pounding by Chicago, 36-10. Ironically, it was Caleb Williams, the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft—thanks to the Panthers trading the top pick the year before to select Young—who led the Bears to victory.</p><p>That’s where the Panthers stand—caught in a maze of poor decisions. Canales, who hopes not to become the fourth coach fired since 2018 by owner David Tepper, now has to find solutions.</p><p>Year 1’s are almost never easy for any head coach, especially a rookie head coach. But this season isn’t likely to get any easier for Canales. So, why not make the move back to Young?</p><h2><b>The Bryce Young Dilemma: to start or not to start?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/bryce-young.jpg"><figcaption>Daniel Bartel-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>First, it’s worth noting that Canales has already named Dalton the starting quarterback against the 3-2 Atlanta Falcons this Sunday, <a href="https://x.com/Sheena_Marie3/status/1843026913180414272" rel="noopener">per</a> Panthers beat writer Sheena Quick. That question was bound to be asked after Dalton’s performance against the Bears, where he was eventually <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/panthers-news-dave-canales-bryce-young-revelation-outrage">replaced in the final minutes by Young</a>. The former Alabama quarterback went 4-for-7 for 58 yards.</p><p>Dalton is the safe answer for Canales, at least for now. With the veteran, he knows what to expect. And at 1-4, there are still potential wins on the table, as the season isn’t a total wash just yet. There’s a fear that going back to Young so soon could be seen as throwing in the towel on the season. After all, the belief as to why Canales so abruptly benched Young in favor of Dalton in the first place was to save the season from getting out of control.</p><p>That didn’t change the face that Canales surprised many by benching Young after just two starts this season and <a href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/Y/YounBr01.htm" rel="noopener">18 overall in his career</a>. If he returns to Young after three starts—four with the upcoming one against Atlanta—it could reveal an uncertain demeanor in the first-year head coach.</p><p>No doubt Canales is feeling the pressure, much like previous Panthers coaches. Frank Reich, fired after just 11 games last season, is a recent reminder of how quickly things can go south. How Canales handles his quarterback situation will greatly reflect on his decision-making abilities as a head coach.</p><h2><b>More than just a quarterback issue</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Panthers-Andy-Dalton-fumbling-football-against-Bears.jpg"><figcaption>© Daniel Bartel-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>It’s not as if quarterback is the only problem Canales needs to solve at this point in the season. Besides the lack of playmakers, with veteran Adam Thielen sidelined with a hamstring injury, the offense has now <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/panthers-news-carolina-dealt-big-blow-key-offensive-lineman-sustains-season-ending-injury">lost its starting center, Austin Corbett</a>, for the season with a torn biceps.</p><p>The Panthers as a whole are ravaged by injuries, particularly on defense. Defensive end Derrick Brown is out for the season, Shaq Thompson is on injured reserve, and Josey Jewell is still dealing with multiple injuries.</p><p>At some point, Canales probably goes back to Young, if for no other reason than to see what the he’s made of and if he has improved. But is that even possible with this beat-up roster? Without their starting center, Young would be especially vulnerable.</p><p>There are a lot of problems going on in Carolina right now that are simply unsolvable. Flip-flopping on quarterbacks likely won’t change anything.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The 23-year-old appeared to be a shadow of his Heisman-winning self, looking overwhelmed and often leaving clean pockets without fully progressing through his routes.</p><p>Watching Bears rookie quarterback <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bears-news-caleb-williams-dj-moore-torching-panthers-salt-wound">Caleb Williams repeatedly make plays, especially with DJ Moore</a>, served as a stark reminder of how much the Panthers sacrificed to acquire Young with the top overall pick.</p><p>The Panthers’ offense had significantly improved with Dalton at the helm until Sunday, when their downfield passing game disappeared, and Dalton threw an interception, contributing to one of the team’s three turnovers.</p><p>When Canales benched Young, he did not present it as a chance for Young to recalibrate by observing Dalton manage the offense. But after a shaky rookie season and a slow start to the 2024 campaign, head coach <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/panthers-news-dave-canales-unsurprising-andy-dalton-decision">Dave Canales turned to Andy Dalton</a>. Young went 0-2 as a starter, completing just 55.4 percent of his passes for 245 scoreless yards and three interceptions.</p><p>Dalton was named the starter in Week 3 and has held the role ever since. Entering the week he had completed 65.4 of his passes for 539 yards, five touchdowns and an interception. Against the Bears however, Dalton completed 18-of-28 passes for 136 scoreless yards and an interception.</p><p>Whether it was Carolina’s offense or Chicago’s defense, the Panthers couldn’t get anything going with the ball in Week 5. They ended the game with just 292 yards of total offense. But in a blowout, it doesn’t seem like Canales is ready to make a quick change.</p><p>Andy Dalton had a bad game, but so did everyone on the Panthers’ offense. Canales confirmed that he just wanted to get Young <a href="https://x.com/Sheena_Marie3/status/1843026865713512462" rel="noopener">some extra reps</a>. Furthermore, he didn’t want Dalton on the field with injuries across the offensive line. He went on to say that there will be <a href="https://x.com/Sheena_Marie3/status/1843026913180414272" rel="noopener">no quarterback change</a> in Week 6, via Sheena Quick of Fox Sports Radio1340.</p><p>But the Panthers and Canales are looking for a spark offensively. Dalton couldn’t provide it in Week 5, perhaps making his leash a bit shorter entering their next matchup. Levis didn’t return to Tennessee’s first win of the season, a 31-12 victory over the Miami Dolphins, due to a shoulder injury. After that, Mason Rudolph took over at quarterback for Tennessee and managed the offense as well as it’s been run all season, with the Titans turning in seven scoring drives, though Rudolph only threw for 85 yards on 9-of-17 passing. After the game, Titans head coach Brian Callahan said Levis would undergo an MRI for what is believed to be an AC joint issue, and the coach added Levis was 100 percent <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/insider/story/_/id/41549312/nfl-week-5-buzz-news-updates-fantasy-tips-predictions-questions" rel="noopener">his starting quarterback going forward</a>.</p><p>“If Will is healthy, he’s our quarterback,” Callahan said. “It was not a decision based on anything other than his health and protecting him, particularly with the bye week. The shoulder didn’t feel great. I didn’t want to put him back out there, and I knew I was going to run the ball quite a bit, so that was really what factored in. But he’s our starter when he’s healthy, and we’re ready to roll with him.”</p><p>In his brief time on Monday, Levis completed 3 of 4 passes for 25 yards with an interception. It was Levis’ sixth INT of the season, tied for the most in the NFL.</p><h2><b>Should the Titans stick with Will Levis at quarterback?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Will-Levis-Titans-Dolphins.jpg"><figcaption>Jasen Vinlove-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/titans-news-mason-rudolph-makes-blunt-admission-after-replacing-will-levis">Although Rudolph won’t take much credit for the win</a>, he still played an essential part for Tennessee. He managed to protect the football, unlike Levis, who again struggled in that department by throwing an interception on the first drive. Rudolph’s caution led to the Titans scoring 31 points through two touchdown runs, five field goals, and a safety while accumulating only 244 total yards. It also helps that the Titans’ defense delivered an outstanding performance on Monday night, restricting the Dolphins to only 13 first downs and 184 total yards. They limited Miami to just 2-of-12 on third downs (16.7 percent) and 1-of-3 on fourth downs (33.3 percent).</p><p>But even with the balance between a stout defense and Rudolph’s careful play, Tennessee won’t give up on Levis yet. While Levis has struggled with mistakes early in the season, his upside is still high. If anything, Tennessee must see what it has before moving on from Levis. Regardless, it’s fair to wonder, with how shaky Levis, who has nine giveaways this year, has been playing, coupled with his injury, if Callahan wouldn’t decide to stick with Rudolph going forward, regardless of Levis’ status. Many fans, myself included, were foolishly expecting <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/meet-caleb-williams-the-bears-no-1-pick-in-2024-nfl-draft">Williams to arrive in Chicago</a> and light the city up <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bears-news-hard-knocks-caleb-williams-michael-jordan-treatment">like a young MJ once did</a>. We had visions of not just a competent offense, but one that could be one of the best units in the league. And we’re not talking about two or three years down the road. The hope was Williams would be ready to transform the franchise from day one.</p><p>Expectations like these are unfair for any rookie, particularly a 22-year-old quarterback who is arriving in a town where historically, QB’s have gone to die. But despite knowing this in my rational mind, even I was guilty of proposing the idea that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/the-chicago-bears-quarterback-rundown-caleb-williams-savior">Williams could be the Bears’ savior</a> before he took a snap at Soldier Field.</p><p>As eager as we were to place “once in a generation” expectations on Caleb Williams, it now seems as if the masses are just as quick to slap a “bust” label on the rookie quarterback. Even if nobody will come right out and use the B-word just yet, recurring comparisons to 2023 1st Overall pick/<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/panthers-news-real-reason-bryce-young-benching-per-nfl-insider">recently benched Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young</a> suggest that this is the direction Williams is heading.</p><p>However, one very plugged in NFL insider is pulling a Lee Corso and saying <i>Not so fast </i>on this idea. The Athletic’s Diana Russini recently spoke with a number of execs around the league and <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5800719/2024/09/28/nfl-week-4-jordan-love-injury-malik-willis-travis-kelce-problems-caleb-williams-bryce-young-comparisons/?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=twhq&amp;source=twitterhq" rel="noopener">there was a consensus among them</a>:</p><p>“In short: Caleb Williams is not Bryce Young. That’s what I’m hearing,” writes Diana Russini.</p><p>Now it should be noted that this wouldn’t be as much of a talking point if, like last year, the 2nd overall pick in the NFL Draft hadn’t gotten off to such a promising start. While Bryce Young struggled all season long, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/texans-news-cj-stroud-wins-offensive-rookie-year-historic-2023-campaign">CJ Stroud thrived, not only cruising to a Rookie of the Year win</a>, but even finding himself in the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/texans-news-cj-stroud-extremely-real-mvp-buzz-amid-solid-rookie-season">MVP conversation by season’s end</a>.</p><p>Diana Russini says that the individuals she spoke with don’t see similarities between this year’s top two picks and last year’s.</p><p>“The many trusted decision-makers I spoke with from around the league made it clear: There are virtually no similarities between this year’s top two [Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels] and last year’s, Bryce Young and C.J. Stroud.”</p><h2><b>Caleb Williams’ early growing pains to be expected</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Caleb-Williams-takes-off-against-the-Texans.jpg?w=1024"><figcaption>© Troy Taormina-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Those “trusted decision-makers” that Diana Russini spoke with explained that while the Washington Commanders and offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury have crafted an offense that is tailor-made for Jayden Daniels’ skillset, the Bears have asked Caleb Williams to not only clear the normal hurdles that all rookie quarterbacks face — a faster game, a new playbook, a longer schedule, etc. — but also an entirely new offensive system which doesn’t really resemble what he was running in college.</p><p>“Williams is being asked to play with structure and lots of patience, something he isn’t used to doing. His ability to throw while on the move — specifically off-script playmaking — is his superpower and what made him a star at USC. Now he’s being sped up by defenses and getting little help from mediocre offensive line play.”</p><p>Despite abysmal offensive line play (particularly on the interior), a non-existent run game, and an offensive coordinator who is calling plays like a 13-year-old would playing Madden, Williams has still shown tremendous growth since he made a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bears-news-caleb-williams-pulls-off-feat-not-done-since-2002-despite-rocky-play">rough debut against the Tennessee Titans</a>. Consider, against the Colts last week, Williams shined when he was able to <a href="https://x.com/dave_bfr/status/1838225321822142746" rel="noopener">operate from a clean pocket</a>, completing 29-of-43 passes for 331 yards and a touchdown while taking just 2.31 seconds on average to throw.</p><p>The linear progress Caleb Williams has shown should ease the concerns of Bears fans. It won’t always be this way. Williams will have his ups and downs this year and beyond. But there has been more than enough proof that the Bears won’t be in a similar position to the Carolina Panthers next year.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
