Receiver Calvin Austin III is expected to take a more prominent role, and cornerback Patrick Peterson is <a href="https://steelersdepot.com/2023/09/patrick-peterson-ready-to-see-calvin-austin-iii-put-his-big-boy-pants-on-in-diontae-johnsons-absence/" rel="noopener">excited to see</a> him grow in that role.</p><p>“We all know Calvin has top-end speed. He can run past anybody. But now he’s probably gonna be in a different role,” Patrick Peterson said, according to Matthew Marczi of Steelers Depot. “He’s probably gonna have to run a bit more routes now versus what his role was when Diontae was in the lineup. It’s gonna be interesting to see how Calvin grows up this week, because now he has his big boy pants on. I’m excited to see him work. Fans were excited to see the speedster play, but he injured his foot right before the Steelers opened up the preseason. He attempted to return to the field after being injured for awhile, but he re-injured his foot in practice and decided to have surgery on it, which ended his season. Now, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/steelers-news-wr-calvin-austin-iii-shares-strong-words-on-early-impressions-of-kenny-pickett-at-rookie-minicamp" rel="noopener">Austin is back</a>, and head coach Mike Tomlin has high expectations for him in practice.</p><p>“<a href="https://heavy.com/sports/pittsburgh-steelers/calvin-austin-answers-mike-tomlin-challenge-speed/" rel="noopener">I’ve been challenging him</a>,” Tomlin said according to an article from heavy.com. “The challenge for him is to perform in a setting like this for a guy who has been around here.”</p><p>This is a difficult challenge for Calvin Austin as he really hasn’t been able to play in this kind of setting at all. He’s essentially a rookie still, but he’s been responding well to the challenge, and he’s not looking like a rookie at Steelers camp.</p><p>“So far, so good,” Tomlin said. “He’s not performing like a rookie. He’s performing like a guy who has been in the program and that’s been encouraging.”</p><p>Mike Tomlin isn’t the only person <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/steelers-news-kenny-pickett-vocal-on-calvin-austin-iii-impressive-preseason-vs-buccaneers" rel="noopener">noticing Austin’s speed either</a>. Steelers corner Patrick Peterson noticed it too, and had some high praise for the young WR.</p><p>“I’m going to go with Calvin Austin on offense,” Peterson when asked about standouts at camp. “I feel like he’s been showing up lately. He definitely looks like he’s the fastest player on the team.”</p><p>It sounds like the Steelers could have a young star on the team. If he's not writing or watching sports, he's likely scouring online for his next NBA card purchase.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NFL</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Kenny Pickett is simply in awe of his Pittsburgh Steelers teammate Calvin Austin III following his performance on Friday in their NFL preseason game <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/buccaneers-news-baker-mayfield-drops-mike-evans-truth" rel="noopener">against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers</a>.</p><p>While the Steelers had a number of incredible touchdowns in their eventual 27-17 win, Austin undoubtedly had the most memorable one when he connected with Mason Rudolph for the 67-yard touchdown pass. He specifically pointed out Austin’s speed, adding that he’s really proud of what he has done. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/steelers-news-breakout-stars-honest-devastating-injury" rel="noopener">Austin is coming off</a> a foot injury that prevented him from playing in his supposed rookie season in 2022, but clearly, he’s doing better now and in full health.</p><p>“I like guys that can run; <a href="https://youtu.be/Q9oAD-4nUy8" rel="noopener">man he’s got speed</a>. Seeing some different things that he did in the jet game and running down field was awesome to see. So proud of Calvin; he’s worked really hard to be here. Obviously [he] went out there and performed a really high level, so it’s great to see,” Pickett shared.</p><p>It remains to be seen if Austin can maintain his speed come the regular season, though there is definitely a reason to be optimistic about that when looking at his TD  play against the Buccaneers.
