After just a few weeks, the Raiders have decided to give the contract extension that he wanted, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.</p><p>“Sources: The Raiders and QB Geno Smith have agreed to terms on a new deal to better compensate him for his play after the blockbuster trade,” Rapoport wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “It’s a 2-year, $85.5M max value extension with $66.5M guaranteed for Geno Smith.”</p><p>Many thought that Smith would get around $40 million in his extension, and he got close to $43 million annually. There were also thoughts that the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/las-vegas-raiders/raiders-rumors-45-million-mistake-tom-brady-wont-make-geno-smith">Raiders may not even try to extend Smith</a>, especially due to the fact that Tom Brady is in the building.</p><p>“They can franchise him twice, so why would they lock themselves into him unnecessarily?” an exec said via The Athletic’s Mike Sando. “Tom Brady is not going to rip it up and give him $45 million a year. They should go year to year.”</p><p>It looks like those rumblings turned out not to be true, and the biggest problem was when the deal might come, but it seems better that it happened sooner rather than later.</p><p>The Raiders seem to set a quarterback for the next few years, and now they can focus on what they want to do in the NFL Draft. With the No. 6 pick, the Raiders have a few options they can go with, but it almost depends on what teams ahead of them do. Someone like Shedeur Sanders could still be on the board and he can give the Raiders future stability at the quarterback position. The Raiders could also draft someone like Travis Hunter, who wants to play both sides of the ball.</p><p>It’s safe to say the Raiders have good problems, and they should be way more competitive than they were last season.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He studied journalism and communication at UConn.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Las Vegas Raiders</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The Las Vegas Raiders <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6194650/2025/04/02/nfl-free-agency-2025-afc-execs-best-worst/" rel="noopener">made a big move</a> to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/las-vegas-raiders/raiders-news-geno-smith-reaction-raiders-seahawks-trade">acquire Geno Smith</a> in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks, and it was an important move to stabilize the team and establish a floor for the 2025 season.</p><p>“Getting Geno was as good as they could have done in their situation,” an exec said, via Mike Sando of The Athletic. “They aren’t getting a quarterback they feel confident in where they are picking in the draft (No. 6). They get a guy who has won.”</p><p>Executives around the league believe that the Raiders’ priority should be to build a strong defense to pair with Smith, who is a solid quarterback but does have some inconsistencies.</p><p>“I don’t know if the rest of the team is going to be reflective of Geno’s ceiling this year, but I think they will win 8-9 games even if they are good around him, because of his inconsistency,” an exec said, via Sando. “That goes up if they can build a top-five defense.”</p><p>The lingering question with Smith is whether or not he will sign an extension with the Raiders. Shortly after the trade, that was seen as close to an inevitability, but nothing has happened since. Another executive said that Tom Brady, who is involved with Raiders ownership now, will not want to lock the team into Smith long-term.</p><p>“They can franchise him twice, so why would they lock themselves into him unnecessarily?” another exec said, via Sando. “Tom Brady is not going to rip it up and give him $45 million a year. They should go year to year.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/las-vegas-raiders/raiders-rumors-insider-drafting-qb-after-geno-smith-trade">Acquiring Smith was</a> likely the Raiders’ best move at quarterback for the 2025 season, but he might not be the best option for 2026 and beyond. While the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/nfl-rumors-why-patriots-made-cowboys-trade-better-offer">Cowboys were able to land Milton</a>, they weren’t the only team in the running for his services, as the Philadelphia Eagles, Pittsburgh Steelers, Las Vegas Raiders, and New York Giants were all interested in him as well.</p><p>A sixth-round pick in the 2024 sixth-round pick, Milton shined in his only NFL action as a rookie, which came against the Buffalo Bills backups in Week 18. Milton threw for 241 yards, ran for another 16, and picked up a pair of touchdowns (one passing, one rushing) to lead New England to victory, although it resulted in them missing out on the No. 1 overall pick ironically enough. Now, Milton will head to the Cowboys despite a <a href="https://x.com/Schultz_Report/status/1907809290015973677" rel="noopener">slew of interest</a> across the league.</p><p>“My understanding is since Joe Milton became available at the start of the offseason, teams that showed interest included the Raiders, Eagles, Giants, Steelers and the Cowboys. The Eagles and Cowboys, meanwhile, were looking for someone they could develop behind the scenes in the event they have a crisis at the position.</p><p>In the end, it was Dallas who ended up winning, even though they reportedly did not have the best offer on the table for Milton. The second-year passer made it clear, though, that he has quite a few Cowboys fans in his family, which could have influenced the Patriots when pulling off this trade. Veteran linebacker Elandon Roberts, signed to a budget-friendly deal, might be the most overlooked yet impactful move of the Raiders’ offseason.</p><h2>The Raiders’ 2025 Free Agency Recap</h2><p>It has been an eventful offseason for the Raiders. Of course, none was more underrated than the signing of Elandon Roberts.</p><p>Here we’ll try to look at the player who is the Las Vegas Raiders’ sneakiest signing during the 2025 NFL free agency period.</p><h2>The Underrated Impact of Elandon Roberts</h2><p>At first glance, signing a 30-year-old linebacker to a short-term contract might not seem like a game-changing move. However, Roberts brings exactly what the Raiders need. He carries toughness, experience, and a relentless edge that aligns perfectly with their aggressive defensive identity. Seeking to add a veteran presence to the linebacker corps, the Silver and Black turned to the former Pittsburgh Steelers standout to bolster their unit.</p><p>With Spillane departing in free agency, the Raiders effectively swapped an $11 million-per-year linebacker for a $3.01 million one. However, there’s a trio of first round talents Vegas must avoid.</p><p>Looking closely at their film and even offseason work, it’s best for the Spytek/Carroll/Brady trio to pass on these guys. Who are the three players to avoid drafting? Here’s the list.</p><h2><b>Tetairoa McMillan, wide receiver, Arizona </b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Tetairoa-McMillan-Arizona.jpg"><figcaption>Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The towering Arizona wideout once looked like a possible top 10 selection. McMillan’s mix of astonishing stature (6-foot-4, 219-pounds) and speed handed him high draft praise.</p><p>The latter intangible, however, has come into light and dimmed his draft stock. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/ncaa-football/arizona-football-news-tetairoa-mcmillan-drops-nfl-draft-rankings-disappointing-40">McMillan started to drop in the draft rankings</a> after running a reported 4.55. Worse part was there was confusion for his 40 time — <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/ncaa-football/conflicting-40-times-for-arizona-wr-tetairoa-mcmillan-has-nfl-fans-confused">as one report revealed McMillan ran a 4.48</a> at his Pro Day.</p><p>McMillan is <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6246631/2025/04/02/nfl-mock-draft-2025-bruce-feldman/" rel="noopener">projected to fall to 18th</a> to the Seattle Seahawks now by Bruce Feldman of The Athletic Wednesday. The Wildcat brings impressive height and red zone production that could entice Carroll and new offensive coordinator Chip Kelly. But McMillan’s questionable speed makes him one to avoid here — especially for an offense that wants to play fast.</p><h2><b>Mason Graham, defensive tackle, Michigan </b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Mason-Graham-with-Michigan-Wolverines.jpg"><figcaption>Eric Seals / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Not knocking Graham at all as a top 10 talent. His freakish attributes will appeal to NFL teams.</p><p>There’s simply not much room for him in Sin City, though. The Raiders already signed Christian Wilkins to a massive 2024 deal. Vegas then brought back Adam Butler after a career-year.</p><p>Drafting Graham at sixth means he has to play behind the aforementioned veterans. That won’t likely sit well with Graham especially as a top 10 pick. Graham should be passed on even if he’s available — as the Raiders have other pressing needs. Graham, though, is <a href="https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2025-nfl-mock-draft-team-trades-back-into-first-round-for-jaxson-dart-commanders-buccaneers-also-move-up/" rel="noopener">picked to fall before No. 6</a> with Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports plugging him to the Jacksonville Jaguars.</p><h2><b>Mykel Williams, edge rusher, Georgia </b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Mykel-Williams.jpg"><figcaption>Jordan Prather-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Walker is more attractable for the Raiders. Not the taller and twitchier Williams.</p><p>Sure, Williams’ impressive 6-foot-5 height and 260-pound frame gets NFL defensive coordinators fawning over him. His lengthy 34 1/2 inch arms adds to the potential love fest for him. Williams hasn’t stayed healthy, though.</p><p>He missed the first half of the season with an injury. Adding Williams feels like a Tyree Wilson-like move for the Raiders. And Wilson is yet to flash consistent potential after going No. 7 to Vegas in 2023 (eight sacks in only two seasons with four career starts). The undersized Walker is more of a need, since he brings value as both an off-ball linebacker and pass rush specialist. The Raiders could go with any position and it could make sense, but a defensive player would probably be the best move for them. In a recent mock draft, the Raiders are <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6246631/2025/04/02/nfl-mock-draft-2025-bruce-feldman/?source=user_shared_article" rel="noopener">selecting a defender</a> from Georgia who was a big part of their team last season.</p><p>“I know there’s a lot of speculation that Vegas will take Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty, but Walker, the 2024 Butkus Award winner as the nation’s top linebacker, is too tempting to miss out on. His production, explosiveness and character have UGA and opposing coaches gushing. If the Raiders aspire to be like the Philadelphia Eagles, getting a game-wrecking defender from Georgia is a good place to start,” according to The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman.</p><p>The Eagles have a thing for drafting Georgia players, and it’s worked out very well for them. If the Raiders have the chance to get a game-changer like Walker, they should hop on the opportunity, especially considering the numbers that he put up last season.</p><p>“At 6-1, 243 with 32-inch arms, Walker doesn’t have great length, but he was a dominant player who shined in big games for the Dawgs,” Feldman wrote. “In two meetings last fall against Texas, which had legit offensive line prospects, Walker had four sacks and six TFLs. In the SEC title game in 2023, he had two sacks against Alabama. One NFL insider believes the Raiders will add a pair of playmakers in the draft.</p><p>ESPN’s Field Yates <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/las-vegas-raiders/raiders-news-ashton-jeanty-eye-opening-take-draft-rumors">paired the Raiders with Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty</a> in his latest 2025 NFL mock draft.</p><p>Yates <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/draft2025/insider/story/_/id/44447028/2025-nfl-mock-draft-field-yates-two-rounds-64-picks-predictions" rel="noopener">laid out his argument</a> for why the Raiders need to address the running back position in the draft.</p><p>“The Raiders have a thin running back room (Raheem Mostert is listed atop the depth chart) and will almost assuredly address the position in the draft. They averaged 3.6 yards per carry and 79.8 per game last season, both bottom of the league. New coach Pete Carroll has historically relied on the running game, so Jeanty is an easy match.”</p><p>Yates also laid out why Jeanty is a special prospect who is worthy of the sixth overall pick. He even believes he could make the Pro Bowl as a rookie with the Raiders.</p><p>“I believe Jeanty has the best chance of any player in the class to be a Pro Bowler in Year 1. His rare blend of power, contact balance, explosion and pass-catching ability can keep him on the field for any situation. He could post big numbers in Las Vegas after rushing for 2,601 yards in his final season at Boise State.”</p><p>Yates also had the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/nfl-stories/nfl-rumors-raiders-address-major-need-with-chiefs-trade-espn-mock-draft">Raiders trading up with the Chiefs</a>, acquiring the 31st overall pick. His son is adamant that Las Vegas select Jeanty with the sixth overall pick.</p><p>“My oldest son has made it no secret that, if we don’t pick Ashton Jeanty at No. 6, that he’s walking out of the family and he’s gonna find somebody else, probably whoever takes Ashton,” Spytek said on Tuesday. “He walked right into our building and basically told Mark Davis, ‘If my dad doesn’t take Ashton Jeanty, he’s doing a bad job.’”</p><p>Jeanty would be a great pick by the Raiders at sixth overall. He had an incredible 2024 campaign at Boise State, racking up 2,601 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns in only 13 games. NFL teams are hard at work attending pro days and assembling their final big boards ahead of April 24th. The draft is now close enough that many mock drafts will now spice things up by including trades. ESPN’s latest 2025 NFL mock draft features one wild trade that involves two teams in the AFC West.</p><p>Field Yates of ESPN <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/draft2025/insider/story/_/id/44447028/2025-nfl-mock-draft-field-yates-two-rounds-64-picks-predictions" rel="noopener">included an interesting trade in his latest mock draft</a>. Yates has the Raiders and Chiefs agreeing to a bold trade offer that sees Kansas City move out of the first round.</p><p>In this mock, the Raiders trade their second-round pick (37th overall) and an early third-round pick (68th overall) to the Chiefs for the 31st overall pick and a late third-rounder (95th overall). Essentially, the Raiders move down roughly 30 spots in the middle rounds as the price to hop six spots up into the first round.</p><p>Las Vegas uses that first-round pick to select <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/ncaa-football/missouri-football-news-luther-burden-iii-expected-nfl-draft-decision">Missouri WR Luther Burden III</a>.</p><p>“He was dominant in 2023, when he had 1,212 receiving yards, including 710 after the catch,” Yates wrote. “He had a modest 2024 (676 yards), but his explosiveness and power with the ball in his hands give him game-changing ability.”</p><p>Yates also had the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/las-vegas-raiders/raiders-news-gm-hilarious-ashton-jeanty-message-son-2025-nfl-draft">Raiders picking Ashton Jeanty</a> with their original first-round pick. The Raiders suddenly look a lot better on offense with Geno Smith handing the ball off to Ashton Jeanty and throwing to Luther Burden III, Jakobi Meyers, and Brock Bowers.</p><p>This trade looks great for the Raiders, but how about the Chiefs?</p><h2><b>Chiefs snag pair of trench players in second round of Field Yates’ 2025 NFL mock draft</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Josh-Simmons.jpg"><figcaption>© Jerome Miron-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Chiefs make out pretty well with this trade as well.</p><p>Kansas City uses the 37th overall pick on Ohio State tackle Josh Simmons.</p><p>Yates explains that the Chiefs get a discount on <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/ncaa-football/ohio-state-football-news-top-tackle-prospect-josh-simmons-ahead-schedule-injury-recovery-nfl-draft">Simmons because he is coming off a torn patellar tendon</a>.</p><p>“Simmons is coming off a torn patellar tendon, which is the only reason he is even in this range,” Yates wrote. “If healthy, he would be long gone by the second round — and he still might go much sooner than this.”</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/kansas-city-chiefs-biggest-need-address-first-week-2025-nfl-free-agency">Chiefs signed Jaylon Moore in free agency</a>, which gives them the option to ease Simmons into the starting lineup slowly. The Chiefs also pick Arkansas edge rusher Landon Jackson with their original second-round pick.</p><p>Finally, Kansas City will enter the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft knowing they can pick roughly 30 spots higher thanks to their trade.</p><p>This trade does seem to work out for both teams on paper. The Raiders already have their quarterback after trading for Geno Smith, and some of the top options at the position will probably be gone by the time they pick. One team that everyone is looking at is the New York Giants, and even though they signed Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, some think that drafting a quarterback <a href="https://x.com/art_stapleton/status/1906695458400911396" rel="noopener">could be in their plans</a> with the No. 3 pick.</p><p>“In talking about what he feels Russell Wilson will bring to the Giants, Pete Carroll – unprompted – also mentioned NYG bringing a rookie QB into that room. Tells you what the Raiders, picking three spots behind the Giants in 1st, and the rest of the league are thinking,” Giants reporter Art Stapleton wrote on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>The Giants have a lot of ways they can go with the pick, but it will also depend on who is there when it’s time to select. Cam Ward seems like a lock for the Tennessee Titans, and there has been a growing sense that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/browns-rumors-why-mel-kiper-picks-abdul-carter-travis-hunter-mock-draft">Abdul Carter will be the pick</a> for the Cleveland Browns.</p><p>It wouldn’t be a surprise if the Giants went with Shedeur Sanders so they can have their quarterback of the future, but if they’re in the mindset of winning now, picking someone like Travis Hunter wouldn’t be a bad decision.</p><p>If the Giants don’t draft Sanders, it would make sense for the Raiders to possibly look to select him, especially with the New England Patriots and Jacksonville Jaguars already having their quarterbacks of the future. While no such contract has been signed by the 34-year-old quarterback and Las Vegas, Carroll said that <a href="https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/pete-carroll-raiders-working-on-extension-for-geno-smith-want-him-long-term" rel="noopener">“we’re working on it,”</a> (h/t Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk).</p><p>Added Carroll: “Yeah, we’re working on it. G’s excited to get going, get started. He’ll be here when we get rolling. But we are working on it.”</p><p>Carroll is very much familiar with Smith and vice versa. After all, the two worked together during their time with the Seattle Seahawks for four seasons. It was with Carroll and the Seahawks that Smith, who was a second-round pick by the New York Jets in the 2023 NFL draft, got his pro career’s second wind.</p><p>In the two seasons as a regular starter in Seattle and under Carroll, Smith earned two Pro Bowl nods, while accumulating 7,906 passing yards and 50 touchdowns against 20 interceptions on a 67.4 percent completion rate from 2022 to 2023. With his future now dependent on the fate of the draft, Jeanty acknowledged that he would not mind going to the Las Vegas Raiders, who have expressed interest in him.</p><p>The Raiders, who have the No. 6 pick of the draft, have not made their affinity for Jeanty a secret. When asked about his thoughts on the team, Jeanty called Las Vegas a “great organization,” which he <a href="https://x.com/KTVBSportsGuy/status/1905362164514521169" rel="noopener">just mentioned was important</a> to him seconds before.</p><p>“I think, most importantly, you want to go to the right fit, the right organization,” Jeanty said to Jay Trust of the Boise-based KTVB news. “It’s about being with the right fit, just like Boise State was the right fit, even though I chose it. Hopefully, the team that chooses me knows I’m the right fit… [The Raiders are] a great organization. I know they can use a running back. They got that nice pick, No. 6, so we’ll see what happens. North Carolina’s Omarion Hampton is also expected to be taken in the first round but well outside of the top 10. Jeanty is the only player of the position expected to hear his name called early.</p><p>Should the Raiders take Jeanty, he would further the team’s offseason offensive overhaul. After signing Pete Carroll as head coach, Las Vegas added Geno Smith and Alex Cappa to change the entire roster outlook. With more moves still to come, the team has already significantly improved from what it was just months ago.</p><p> </p><h2><b>Raiders favored to draft Ashton Jeanty</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Pete-Carroll-press-conference-.jpg"><figcaption>Kirby Lee-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Raiders are the betting favorites to draft Jeanty on most sportsbooks. The <a href="https://sportsbook.fanduel.com/navigation/nfl?tab=nfl-draft" rel="noopener">odds are lined</a> at +105 on Fanduel Sportsbook. The Chicago Bears have the second-best odds at +140, with the Dallas Cowboys a distant third at +650.</p><p>Aside from the Raiders, some <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/nfl-draft-news-expert-links-ashton-jeanty-patriots-backup-plan">see the New England Patriots</a> to be sneakily interested in Jeanty at No. 4. The Patriots did not add a running back in free agency, leaving just Rhamondre Stevenson and Antonio Gibson returning in the backfield. Neither was serviceable in 2024, making it likely they address the position in the draft.</p><p>Regardless, Jeanty is the heavy betting favorite to be the first running back taken of the draft.
