The franchise is coming off a very trying season, which say it break its three-year playoff drought. Over the offseason, the organization decided to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/dallas-cowboys/cowboys-news-why-mike-mccarthy-out-as-head-coach">move on from head coach Mike McCarthy</a> and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/dallas-cowboys/cowboys-news-dallas-hires-brian-schottenheimer-head-coach">hired Brian Schottenheimer</a> to replace him. Aside from that significant move, Dallas’ signings this free agency have been mainly under-the-radar moves.</p><p>There seems to be a big splash brewing at some point for this organization, and the NFL Draft could be where it happens. However, should the Cowboys decide to use their No. 12 overall pick, Ryan Clark believes there’s a clear need Dallas must address. The former Super Bowl-winning safety <a href="https://x.com/ESPNNFL/status/1907170796688011753" rel="noopener">gave his take</a> on NFL Live.</p><p>“The big thing is who are you going to add to CeeDee Lamb, who are going to add to Jake Ferguson? Are you going to find some skill players that can create big plays offensively? Everything seemed so hard for the Dallas Cowboys last year, where we were just looking for CeeDee Lamb to make a play. Then once Dak Prescott was gone, it didn’t seem like they had a playmaker outside of 88 (Lamb) and an occasional opportunity for Jake Ferguson. The Houston native is an elite prospect who helped his stock significantly when he ran a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/ncaa-football/texas-football-news-matthew-golden-named-better-prospect-xavier-worthy-blazing-40-time">blazing 4.29 time</a> at the NFL combine.</p><p>However, other positions also deserve consideration. The Cowboys seem to be set on their running back rotations with new additions Javote Williams and Miles Sanders. But if Boise State superstar Ashton Jeanty, who is also an elite pass-catcher, is available, he could be another weapon Dallas can add. In addition, the Cowboys are still in need of another cornerback and defensive tackle and could address that here. Will the franchise try to draft someone like Will Johnson or Kenneth Grant?</p><p>Overall, there are more than a couple of areas of need that Jerry Jones must address in this draft. But on Wednesday, the franchise opened up even more cap space with a simple restructure of Dak Prescott’s contract as well.</p><p>With the latest decision on Prescott’s contract, the Cowboys <a href="https://x.com/toddarcher/status/1897363520393765342" rel="noopener">freed up an additional $36.6 million</a> in cap space, according to Todd Archer of ESPN. The veteran quarterback missed more than half of the season after suffering a season-ending hamstring injury. Prescott ended the season with 1,978 passing yards, 12 total touchdowns, and eight interceptions while throwing a 64.7% completion percentage.</p><p>The franchise signed Prescott to a four-year, $240 million deal in September 2024. It made the 31-year-old quarterback the highest-paid player in league history.</p><p>Outside of that, the Cowboys didn’t make too many moves last offseason. This had him be $1 million per year behind Justin Jefferson at the top of the wide receiver market. The Cowboys kept his cap number artificially low in Year 1 of the deal, implementing future restructures with larger base salaries in 2025, 2026, and 2027.</p><p>Most of Lamb’s $26.85 million base salary for 2025 will now become a signing bonus, which then gets spread out over the remaining length of the deal and the first of the four void years attached to his contract. As a result, it <a href="https://x.com/toddarcher/status/1896994885233992050" rel="noopener">drops his cap number</a> from approximately $35.3 million to around $14.8 million heading into the 2025 campaign, per ESPN.</p><p>The Cowboys went 7-10 in the 2024 season, missing the playoffs as they suffered injuries to key players. He studied journalism and communication at UConn.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Dallas Cowboys</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The Dallas Cowboys reportedly <a href="https://x.com/toddarcher/status/1896995842277695725" rel="noopener">have restructured wide receiver</a> CeeDee Lamb’s contract to create $20 million in cap space, according to Todd Archer of ESPN.</p><p>This is a significant move for the Cowboys, who were heavily criticized last offseason for not restructuring contracts to be aggressive in free agency. They made very few notable moves to improve the roster last offseason, and as a result of Dak Prescott getting hurt, the team disappointed and finished under .500 in 2025. With Prescott returning for 2026 on a long-term contract that pays him $60 million a year, the time to compete is now for the Cowboys.</p><p>After <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/dallas-cowboys/cowboys-news-dallas-avoids-franchise-tag-with-80-million-contract-star-defender">agreeing to an extension with Osa Odighizuwa</a> and making this move with Lamb, it would be logical to assume that the Cowboys will be at least somewhat aggressive in free agency when it starts next week. It will be interesting to see the players the Cowboys target and if they are some of the bigger names available in free agency.</p><p>Regardless of the salary cap situation heading into free agency next week, the Cowboys’ biggest item on the docket this offseason is figuring out a long-term extension <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/dallas-cowboys/nfl-rumors-cowboys-micah-parsons-contract-extension-talks-underway">with pass rusher Micah Parsons</a>. Dallas delayed on the extensions for both Lamb and Prescott last offseason, and the franchise has a reputation for leaving those types of moves until the last minute. Prescott’s extension was not done until the morning of Week 1 of the 2024 season.</p><p>Given the track record, it would not be surprising to see this situation with Parsons drag into training camp, but it would also be somewhat surprising if the Cowboys were not able to figure something out with him, because history suggests that usually the sides come to an agreement.</p><p>In the meantime, the Cowboys will likely look to improve their roster outlook for 2025 to try to compete for a deep run in the playoffs.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Meanwhile, an ESPN mock draft prediction landed a CeeDee Lamb running mate for the Cowboys.</p><p>Without a viable No. 2 guy, the Cowboys sometimes overfed Lamb. And sometimes they struggled to move the football. Talk of the NFL Draft these days has the Cowboys <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/draft2025/insider/story/_/id/44075933/2025-nfl-mock-draft-first-two-rounds-predictions-64-picks-jordan-reid" rel="noopener">finding a solution</a> with the No. 12 overall pick, getting Tatairoa McMillan, according to espn.com.</p><p>“The Cowboys desperately need a running mate for wide receiver CeeDee Lamb,” Jordan Reid wrote. “McMillan is a big-bodied target at 6-foot-4, 219 pounds with a good catch radius. He can also run well after the catch, ranking third in the FBS among receivers with 27 forced missed tackles. McMillan is capable of playing the slot and outside, making him an ideal WR2. There are some questions about his long speed, which won’t be answered until Arizona’s pro day on March 18 since he didn’t work out at the combine.”</p><h2><b>Cowboys might land Tetairoa McMillan in the first round</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Arizona-University-WR-Tetairoa-McMillan.jpg"><figcaption>Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Some draft boards have McMillan going much higher than this. The Pro Football Network mock draft simulator had him at No. 2 in one spin. That seems unlikely, but it highlights the problem with Fowler’s bet on McMillan lasting until pick No. 12.</p><p>Also, the Cowboys might not even go with a receiver, if a person listens to the <a href="https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/brian-schottenheimer-on-desire-to-run-i-got-in-trouble-for-letting-russ-cook-a-little-bit-in-seattle" rel="noopener">running back talk</a> of new head coach Brian Schottenheimer, acccording to nbcsports.com.</p><p>“I think offensively you try to build it based on what your guys do well,” Schottenheimer said. “I got in trouble for letting Russ [Wilson] cook a little bit back in Seattle. Some people got the joke; some people didn’t.</p><p>“No, at the end of the day, you have to be able to run the football. We’ve made a commitment that we want to be great on both sides of the line of scrimmage. That’s a huge part of it. The way I say it, ‘When teams know you’re going to run the ball, you have to be able to run the ball and conversely stop the run.’ Again, depending on how the roster is filled and how it’s constructed, we want to be able to feature our guys and what they do well.”</p><p>Schottenheimer even dove into the exact specifications of what he wants his running back to be. He mentioned vision right off the top.</p><p>“You want a guy that’s got vision,” Schottenheimer said. “You want a guy that has contact balance. The fronts that we’re seeing, the fronts that we’re facing, require guys to be able to make hidden yards, whether there’s a free safety in the hole or there’s a linebacker or a defensive lineman coming off the point of attack.”</p><p>Perhaps it will come down to a good old-fashioned tug of war between Schottenhemier and Jerry Jones.
