Three of the Falcons’ first six games this season have been against divisional foes, and in each one, Atlanta has come out on top. The win over the Panthers was their most dominant against any team. For the first time this season, the Falcons didn’t have to rely on a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/falcons-news-stats-show-improbability-all-3-falcons-wins-this-season">late comeback to secure a victory</a>.</p><p>After taking a 15-10 lead on a Bijan Robinson 7-yard touchdown run with a little over six minutes left in the first half, the Falcons never looked back. They allowed Carolina just 10 more points for the rest of the game, including only three in the second half.</p><p>The last two games have shown more of the Atlanta team everyone expected this season, which understandably has Falcons fans excited. It has also sparked overreactions from fans and pundits alike about this year’s team. So with that said, let’s get into five of them after their win over Carolina.</p><h2><b>This is the Falcons offense that was expected</b></h2><p>For the second week in a row, the Atlanta Falcons’ offense looked much like what many were expecting with the arrival of Kirk Cousins—even though he didn’t have to do too much against the Panthers.</p><p>Cousins completed 19 of 30 passes for 225 yards and one touchdown. However, it was the Falcons’ running game that took charge, racking up 198 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.</p><p>This was a stark contrast to the previous week when Cousins threw for over 500 yards in an overtime win against the Buccaneers. And that’s okay. This offense doesn’t need to be one-dimensional. Proving they can effectively run the ball—something they hadn’t done too well this season—is key. It allows them to avoid constantly relying on the passing game while controlling the clock.</p><p>However, it’s worth noting this performance came against a beat up Panthers squad that’s been struggling, particularly on defense. While it’s encouraging that Atlanta avoided a letdown against a weaker opponent, the offense is still in its early stages, though much improved from Week 1.</p><h2><b>Tyler Allgeier proved he’s the best running back on the team</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Falcons-Tyler-Allgeier-running-against-Panthers.jpg"><figcaption>© Jim Dedmon-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Speaking of the run game, both Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgeier had big days, and fairly even ones at that. Allgeier led with 18 carries for 105 yards and a touchdown, while Robinson tallied 15 carries for 95 yards and two touchdowns.</p><p>Allgeier had just three carries in Week 1, but since then, he’s seen at least six carries or more in every game. After his standout performance against the Saints—where he was bouncing off defenders—many began to wonder if Allgeier, not Robinson, should be considered the Falcons’ No. 1 running back and whether he simply needed more touches.</p><p>Well, Allgeier posted a season-high in both carries and yards on Sunday against the Panthers, adding his first touchdown of the season while yet again running his way through tacklers. Does this mean he’ll start getting the bulk of the load? He’s certainly been seeing more action over the last few weeks. It’s something to keep an eye on, though Robinson nearly matched him in production on Sunday, and that was with an <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/falcons-news-bijan-robinson-shoots-down-injury-concerns-with-practice-return">apparent hamstring issue</a>.</p><h2><b>A.J. Terrell will have more interceptions this season</b></h2><p>A.J. Terrell did something on Sunday that he hadn’t done since Jan. 2, 2022—make an interception. And it couldn’t have come at a better time. The Panthers were deep in Atlanta territory, trailing just 28-20, when Terrell picked off Andy Dalton.</p><p>Coming into the season, Terrell had just four career interceptions to his name, and as mentioned, he was nearing a two-year drought without one. He also entered the season with a new four-year, $81 million extension. However, he’s been a bit rusty so far this year. Terrell currently <a href="https://www.pff.com/nfl/grades/position/cb" rel="noopener">ranks</a> just inside the top 40 cornerbacks in the NFL, with a Pro Football Focus defensive grade of 67.5, down from last year’s 74.6. His coverage grade ranks 49th at 64.1.</p><p>This could be the confidence-boosting game Terrell needed this season. But with other ball hawks like Jessie Bates III and Justin Simmons in the Falcons’ secondary, it’s unlikely Terrell will suddenly become a frequent playmaker in terms of interceptions—he’s just not that type of corner.</p><h2><b>Kyle Pitts is a bust</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Falcons-Kyle-Pitts-against-Panthers.jpg"><figcaption>© Bob Donnan-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Is it time to finally consider Kyle Pitts a bust? Many believed that all he needed was a better quarterback to start taking off. Now, with Kirk Cousins—who has a history of utilizing tight ends effectively—there were high hopes for Pitts’ production. However, after six games, Pitts has just 18 catches on 28 targets for 263 yards and only one touchdown.</p><p>Pitts did have a flash of potential against the Panthers, breaking off a 52-yard reception that nearly resulted in a touchdown. But that was one of only three catches for 70 yards on the day. While it’s not a terrible performance by NFL standards, it remains concerning that Pitts hasn’t developed into the dominant player many expected when he came out of college. His lone score this season came back in Week 1.</p><p>Pitts is 6th in receiving yards for tight ends and 8th in yards per reception (14.6).</p><h2><b>The Falcons are now going to win the NFC South, without a doubt</b></h2><p>So far, it’s been a clean sweep for the Falcons over their NFC South rivals, which has led to the major overreaction that the NFC South division is all but theirs for the taking. With a hot start in divisional play, Atlanta fans and pundits alike are buzzing with optimism.</p><p>However, while this is a new-look Falcons team, it’s important to remember that the Buccaneers, winners of the last three division titles, are still very much in the mix. Plus, the Falcons haven’t finished with a winning record in division play since 2019, when they <a href="https://www.statmuse.com/nfl/ask/falcons-record-vs-nfc-south-2019" rel="noopener">went 4-2</a>.</p><p>Additionally, Atlanta now faces the challenge of playing on the road against the tougher of division opponents in New Orleans and Tampa Bay, while hosting Carolina to end the regular season. They will have one of their best offensive players ready to play despite an injury scare late in the week.</p><p>Falcons head coach Raheem Morris said Friday that RB Bijan Robinson <a href="https://x.com/marcraimondi/status/1844798309078065501" rel="noopener">is good to go for Week 6</a>, per ESPN’s Marc Raimondi. Robinson was a full participant in Friday’s practice and is ready to roll with teh Falcons on Sunday.</p><p>This is great news for Atlanta, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/falcons-news-bijan-robinson-reappears-injury-report-hamstring-issue">especially after Bijan’s injury scare earlier this week</a>. Robinson appeared on the Falcons injury report with a hamstring injury on Thursday, which raised some eyebrows. <a href="https://x.com/jjones9/status/1844468223384879136" rel="noopener">He was officially listed as limited</a> for Thursday’s practice, per Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports.</p><p>Robinson has yet to have a truly elite performance in 2024. He has logged 67 carries for 285 yards and one touchdown through five games. Andy Dalton has played better than Bryce Young, but he is no Joe Flacco. Carolina’s offensive is significantly handicapped and should be fairly easy for the Falcons to stop schematically.</p><p>One important X-factor for this game could be Carolina’s running game against Atlanta’s defense. Chuba Hubbard has been by far the most consistent part of Carolina’s offense through five weeks. If the Falcons can hold up in run defense, that could force Andy Dalton to attempt to win the game with his right arm. That outcome would significantly favor the Falcons.</p><p>The Falcons are six-and-a-half point favorites in this matchup despite playing in Charlotte. However, things would become much more difficult for the Falcons if Bijan Robinson were to miss the matchup.</p><p>The star running back was added to Atlanta’s injury report on Thursday <a href="https://x.com/jjones9/status/1844468223384879136" rel="noopener">with a hamstring injury</a>. He was officially listed as limited, via Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports.</p><p>Robinson dealt with a hamstring injury leading up to the Falcons’ Week 5 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was similarly added to the injury report late in the week and was hit with a limited tag leading up to the game.</p><p>However, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/falcons-news-bijan-robinson-full-go-for-tnf-vs-buccaneers-after-injury-update">Robinson still suited up</a> and led the team with 61 rushing yards and 12 carries. The raw numbers aren’t most impressive, but Robinson’s 5.1 yards per carry surely is. As was the Falcons coming away with a 36-30 overtime victory.</p><p>Through the first five weeks of the season, Robinson has gained 285 yards and a touchdown on 67 carries. He’s added another 151 yards through the air on 18 grabs. While it’s not the explosive numbers Atlanta is hoping for, Robinson is still a key focal point of the Falcons’ offense.</p><p>The team ranks 10th in the NFL in total offense, averaging 357.4 yards per game. One reporter on the ground made a handful of football-related analogies about the storm system. The last of which <a href="https://x.com/joekovacjr/status/1844184393482633489" rel="noopener">included a painful reminder</a> for Falcons fans.</p><p>“Mike we definitely enjoyed the little halftime show that Mother Nature gave us inside Milton,” the reporter said. “But now, we’ve got the second half. I’ve got to remind everyone while might be in the eye right now there’s a lot more to come.”</p><p>The reporter then twisted the knife by reminding Falcons fans about 28-3. “I think back to the Atlanta Falcons. First half Super Bowl winners,” the reporter continued. “We know what happened to the second half when the Patriots came back to life. So do not sleep on the second half of Milton. We are definitely concerned now with the [second-half] surge which continues to rise up.”</p><p>This reporter seemed to have no ill intentions with using the Falcons Super Bowl analogy. It is possible he was simply looking for a relatable example for explaining the eye of the hurricane. Of course, in the NFL, nothing is ever certain, where teams are often evenly matched. However, this time, it feels more likely Atlanta could cruise to a win against a Panthers team that is struggling to find its footing.</p><p>Carolina (1-4) is coming off a blowout loss to the Chicago Bears in Week 5, a 36-10 defeat that left them searching for more answers. On top of that, the Panthers are dealing with injuries across the roster, which has further hampered their performances as of late.</p><p>For the Falcons (3-2), they’re looking to build on the momentum of their dramatic victory last Thursday. They want to avoid falling back to .500 and continue strengthening their hold in the division. The Falcons’ second-year running back is hoping to break that drought in Week 6 against the struggling Carolina Panthers. Robinson’s versatility as both a runner and receiver is a big reason the Falcons drafted him 8th overall, and the new regime is continuing to emphasize his dual-threat capabilities.</p><p>Robinson has already posted multiple strong performances this season, and he’s in a great spot to do it again this week. The Panthers’ defense has struggled with tackling, ranking fifth in the league with 39 missed tackles. Robinson’s elusive style and shiftiness make him a prime candidate to exploit those issues. Expect him to hit 70 yards on the ground, add 30 through the air, and get back into the end zone in Week 6.</p><h2><b>Falcons win the pass rush battle against Panthers</b></h2><p>When the Falcons and Panthers face off on Sunday, both teams will bring two of the NFL’s least effective pass rushes to the field. The Falcons and Panthers are almost identical in their struggles, with Atlanta posting a 14.4% pressure rate and recording just five sacks, while Carolina isn’t much better with a 13.1% pressure rate and six sacks.</p><p>While it’s unlikely that this game will turn into a sack fest for either side, the Falcons could have an edge with the Panthers missing their starting center, who was lost to injury against the Bears in Week 5. While it may be difficult for him to replicate that performance against the Panthers, he should still have a productive day against one of the worst passing defenses in the NFL.</p><p>The Panthers are tied for the most passing touchdowns allowed this season (11), while also surrendering a 70.8% completion rate and 8.1 yards per pass attempt. If Cousins can reach the 275-yard mark and throw for three touchdowns or more, it would be his second-highest total in both categories this season, continuing his strong 2024 campaign.</p><h2><b>Falcons beat Panthers by two scores, avoid another nail-biter</b></h2><p>All five of the Falcons’ games this season have been decided by one score or less, coming down to the final moments. Each of those games could have gone either way, leaving Atlanta with a record anywhere between 5-0 or 0-5. Instead, they <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/falcons-news-stats-show-improbability-all-3-falcons-wins-this-season">stand at 3-2</a>, a testament to their resiliency, but it’s clear they don’t want to be in these tight situations every week.</p><p>The Falcons should by no means underestimate the Panthers on Sunday. Even though Carolina is struggling, they still have NFL-level talent on the roster. They won the coin toss and marched down the field for a walk-off KhaDarel Hodge touchdown.</p><p>Thursday night’s Falcons victory <a href="https://x.com/JeffDuncan_/status/1842053085327155282" rel="noopener">shared a common thread with other victories this year</a>. In fact, there is one statistic that connects each of the Falcons’ three wins this season.</p><p>Atlanta won all three of these games with come-from-behind heroics in the final minutes of the fourth quarter over overtime. He barely beat Matt Ryan’s record of 503 yards.</p><p>Cousins was riding high after the game.</p><p>“What a night,” Cousins said. “I’m exhausted.”</p><p>Cousins was reportedly <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/recap/_/gameId/401671815" rel="noopener">pleased with his teammates’ grit and determination</a> in the victory, which demanded extra minutes.</p><p>“I’m proud of the grit,” Cousins said. “In this league, that’s what it takes. We were gritty tonight.”</p><p>Cousins did not simply choose one teammate and lock in on throwing them the ball. In fact, both Drake London and Darnell Mooney had over 100 receiving yards.</p><p>“I spread it around and the players made plays,” Cousins said. “I’m grateful for the progress we’ve made. We’re getting better and better each week.”</p><p>Raheem Morris was pleased after the win, but was not very verbose about Kirk’s incredible performance.</p><p>“Outstanding,” Morris said, giving a one-word answer that really says it all.</p><p>Morris was quick to point out that it was not just a Kirk Cousins show on Thursday night. Kirk Cousins simultaneously <a href="https://x.com/mattkaroly/status/1842045347176009902" rel="noopener">made franchise history</a> and led the birds to a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/hbcu-standout-khadarel-hodge-secures-game-winning-touchdown-vs-buccaneers">bonkers 36-30 win</a> over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.</p><p>The 36-year-old quarterback was 42-of-58 for a mind-boggling 509 passing yards and four touchdowns, eclipsing Ryan’s previous all-time Falcons mark of 503 yards, via Matt Karoly. On an occasion when the player most synonymous with Atlanta’s peak is formally recognized, it is quite appropriate for Cousins to inspire more hope than there has been since <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/matt-ryan-drops-touching-message-to-falcons-in-nfl-retirement-announcement">the Ryan era</a>.</p><p>The four-time Pro Bowler overcame a multitude of fourth-quarter blunders, including one of his own (an interception by Lavonte David with less than two minutes remaining), and conducted two massive drives to pull off an exhilarating comeback. After setting up kicker Younghoe Koo for a game-tying 52-yard field goal, Cousins fired a pass to wide receiver KhaDarel Hodge, who in turn evaded the falling Zyon McCollum and broke loose for the winning score in overtime.</p><p>With that chaos-inducing play, Cousins capped off one of the best games a Falcons quarterback has ever posted. What is most impressive, however, is that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/falcons-news-drake-london-3-word-message-kirk-cousins-historic-game">the monster showing</a> comes amid growing concern that passing numbers are too low through the first month of the season.</p><h2><b>Kirk Cousins is delivering for the Falcons</b></h2><p>It feels like only yesterday that Kirk Cousins was carrying the reputation of being a prime-time flop, but now he is solidifying himself as one of the most clutch signal-callers in the league. His excellent field vision and unflappable poise allowed the Falcons to survive a dropped pass, blocked field goal, fumble and delay of game penalty all in the final minutes of regulation. Such a scenario is always unlikely, but it certainly would not have happened with the team’s QB play the last couple of years.</p><p>In other words, the Falcons’ investment is paying big dividends early in the 2024-25 campaign. You know, the back and forth in there and stuff out there. Yeah, that was a crazy scenario there,” the quarterback said.</p><p>For his part, Bucs safety Christian Izen believes the team can move on from the loss, despite the many blown opportunities to take the game.</p><p>“We have to understand we’re very early in the season… We can’t let one loss ruin the season,” he said.</p><p>The safety might have a point, since a 3-2 record isn’t all that bad.
