The 49ers signal-caller remains a lightning rod for polarizing conversations in the sport. Many fans view him strictly as a product of the 49ers’ coaching, scheme and supporting cast. Just last week, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/broncos-news-colin-cowherd-bonkers-pick-brock-purdy-bo-nix">Colin Cowherd picked Bo Nix over Purdy</a> straight up in a rapid-fire hot-take segment on his show The Herd.</p><p>“[Nix is] slightly [better than Purdy]. [Nix is] the more accurate thrower collegiately. He’s starting to settle in. He didn’t inherit Kittle and Deebo and Aiyuk and all these wonderful toys to play with. Superstar running back Christian McCaffrey deservedly gets the lion’s share of attention. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/49ers-news-troubling-christian-mccaffrey-week-6-update">McCaffrey has missed the first six weeks</a> of the season with Achilles tendonitis and still has no set date for a return. Jordan Mason has filled in admirably for McCaffrey but he got banged up in Week 6. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/49ers-news-jordan-mason-sprained-ac-joint-catch">Mason sprained his AC joint</a> against the Seattle Seahawks, putting his availability for Week 7 in jeopardy.</p><p>While running back remains a major question mark for the 49ers, the team is also dealing with a string of injuries to its kickers. Second-year kicker <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/49ers-news-jake-moody-important-injury-update-hurting-ankle-vs-cardinals">Jake Moody hurt his ankle</a> in San Francisco’s Week 5 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. With Moody expected to miss multiple games, the team <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/49ers-news-sign-ex-steelers-panthers-kicker-jake-moody-injury">signed journeyman Matthew Wright</a> to replace him. But while Moody injured his ankle, Wright dislocated his shoulder. Both sound unpleasant but a kicker is more reliant on his ankles than his shoulders. So, for the time being, Carlson is just insurance. He will be elevated to the team’s active roster if Wright is unable to suit up.</p><p>The 49ers would prefer to have Wright available for a huge matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. The sixth-year veteran was 3/3 on field goal attempts with a long of 41 in San Francisco’s Week 6 win over the Seahawks. Wright also converted all three of his extra point tries.</p><p>The 49ers are familiar with their newest kicker as <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/packers-news-matt-lafleur-assessment-kicker-anders-carlson-fail-49ers">Carlson missed a 41-yard field goal</a> in the Divisional Round of the playoffs between San Francisco and the Packers last year. The kick would have extended Green Bay’s lead to seven late in the fourth quarter. In an effort to salvage their hobbled defense, the team is expected to scout free agency for veteran replacements.</p><p>Ahead of their Week 7 clash with the Kansas City Chiefs, the 49ers are <a href="https://x.com/Schultz_Report/status/1846281931253497941" rel="noopener">expected to sign nine-year safety</a> Adrian Amos to its active roster, per Jordan Schultz. Amos most recently was with the Jacksonville Jaguars in the offseason but did not make the final cut after ending 2023 with the Houston Texans.</p><p>Amos, who will begin his 10th year in the league once he officially takes the field, started his career as a fifth-round pick by the Chicago Bears in 2015. In the summer of 2019, Amos signed with the Green Bay Packers in free agency, where he would spend the next four seasons before joining the New York Jets in the 2023 offseason. He would be released from the team midseason and sign an in-season deal with the Texans.</p><p>In his lengthy career, Amos has never made a Pro Bowl but has consistently been a reliable safety with a penchant for finding the ball carrier. Amos recorded over 80 tackles in every year with the Packers, including a career-high 102 tackles in 2022.</p><p>It is unclear if the 49ers intend to start Amos right away but are currently dealing with only two healthy safeties. Probably not. Or how about the Broncos 19 sacks (third-most)? Or Denver only allowing 271.2 yards per game (third-best)? The Chiefs have two Super Bowl wins over the 49ers in the Shanahan era, the most recent coming in last year’s Super Bowl in a 25-22 overtime heartbreaker. Kansas City also has won their only two regular-season meetings against Shanahan — a 38-27 win at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City in 2018, in which the 49ers lost quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to a season-ending injury, and a 43-22 blowout victory against the 49ers at Levi’s Stadium in 2022.</p><p>The Chiefs are just one team on a schedule that includes games against the Dallas Cowboys, Buffalo Bills, Green Bay Packers, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Head coach Kyle Shanahan <a href="https://www.sfgate.com/49ers/article/nfl-refs-miss-seahawks-fumble-49ers-replay-19830729.php" rel="noopener">had a few words</a> after the game, letting the refs know that they missed the call.</p><p>“It was awesome by Ham, because he said you could tell by how the guy’s hand moved that the ball hit him, and that’s all he saw,” Shanahan said. “He couldn’t 100% see the ball, but he could tell how the hand moved, and with it being Thursday Night Football, I thought for sure they’d have a bunch of camera angles.”</p><p>In the fourth quarter 49ers special teams player Chris Conley was pushed into Seahawks returner Dee Williams before the punt came down as the refs threw a flag as the ball bounced away from Williams, and the 49ers appeared to down it.</p><p>The referees came together and said Conley was shoved into Williams by Seahawks special teamer Devon Witherspoon, taking the penalty away. Head coach Kyle Shanahan challenged the call, saying that he believed the ball touched Williams, which would have given the 49ers the ball. The broadcast showed Williams touching the ball, and after the refs reviewed, they still did not overturn the call.</p><p>Amazon’s rules analyst Terry McAulay said he thought the referees got the call wrong, and broadcaster Kirk Herbstreit and Al Michaels agreed.</p><p>“We’ve seen two different angles where it’s pretty clear it hits the finger of the receiving team player, and then there’s a clear recovery,” McAulay said. “I believe this should have been reversed to San Francisco’s football.”</p><h2>Refs miss call in fourth quarter of 49ers, Seahawks game</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Kyle-Shanahan.jpg"><figcaption>Joe Nicholson-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>If the call was reversed, the 49ers would have gotten the ball, and there was a good chance that they would’ve scored again.
