This decision ties the 24-year-old wideout to New Orleans through the 2026 season. Additionally, the franchise elected to decline right tackle Trevor Penning’s fifth-year option, which puts him in line to become a free agent after the 2025 season.</p><p>“The Saints are exercising the fifth-year option on WR Chris Olave for $15.493M but declining the option on OT Trevor Penning, which would’ve been $16.685M Penning is now scheduled to become a free agent after the season.”</p><p>Olave played in just eight games last season after suffering two concussions during the 2024-25 campaign. The Saints’ offense struggled throughout last season, and not having Olave on the field hurt them. He <a href="https://x.com/AdamSchefter/status/1875644514330931379" rel="noopener">has been ruled out</a> of Sunday’s season finale against the Buccaneers, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The Saints wide receiver hasn’t played since Week 9.</p><p>He sustained two concussions within the nine weeks, which has an alarm going off. However, the Saints season has been over during his extended injury. For instance, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/3-reasons-saints-fired-dennis-allen-loss-panthers">Saints fired Dennis Allen</a> after being upset by the Carolina Panthers. Not to mention, quarterback Derek Carr sustained an injury that forced them to go to Spencer Rattler.</p><p>Although the team has looked competitive, that doesn’t translate to wins. Plus, Olave is the best offensive playmaker, outside of Alvin Kamara. Still, they have had an unfortunate season, per their standards. The 5-11 record is the second-worst in the NFC South, only behind the Panthers.</p><h2><b>Chris Olave’s injury update marks the end of a brutal Saints season</b></h2><p>A barrage of unfortunate events occurred during the New Orleans season. It left a negative mark on the franchise, to say the least. Since Sean Payton left the team, they haven’t found consistency with their winning. Despite drafting Olave and signing Carr, it hasn’t been enough.</p><p>Even the elite defense has taken a step back. Although interim head coach Darren Rizzi has went 3-4 with the team, it proves the rough showing this season. After an elite 2-0 start, New Orleans crashed back down to Earth. For Olave, his injury-riddled season will be one he’ll want to forget.</p><p>For starters, he caught <a href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/O/OlavCh00.htm" rel="noopener">32 passes for 400 yards and one touchdown</a>. After surpassing the 1,000 yard mark in his first two seasons, this marks a first. However, health is wealth, in Olave’s case. Maintaining his health and taking preventive measures to limit concussions will do wonders for his career. And now, he’s set to miss another.</p><p>Though Olave posted a strong start to the season with three straight 80-yard outings from Week 2-4, it looked like he could have his third 1,000-yard season in a row.</p><p>Since being drafted in 2022, Olave had back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons to begin his NFL career, but it’s nearly impossible for him to eclipse that mark in 2024 following a year full of concussions, especially with him missing Week 17.</p><h2><b>Saints WR Chris Olave remains in concussion protocol following latest injury update</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Kansas-City-Missouri-USA-New-Orleans-Saints-wide-receiver-Chris-Olave-12-on-the-sidelines-against-the-Kansas-City-Chiefs-during-the-game-at-GEHA-Field-at-Arrowhead-Stadium.jpg"><figcaption>Denny Medley-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>While some Saints fans could be frustrated with Olave’s recovery time, brain injuries shouldn’t be rushed back.</p><p>If someone breaks their arm or leg, it’s unfortunate, but the long-term effects are nowhere near as severe as brain injuries.</p><p>As seen with Tua Tagovailoa over the years, there have been <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/dolphins-news-tua-tagovailoa-doctors-told-him-concussion-recovery">talks of him retiring because of all the brain injuries</a> he’s sustained in a short time.</p><p>The Saints’ third-year receiver should also have those serious discussions this offseason.</p><p>Over his three seasons in the NFL, Olave has accrued four documented concussions, two of which came in 2024.</p><p>Although he’s only been in the league for three years, his post-football life could be massively affected if Olave continues withstanding concussions at the rate he has.</p><p>Getting one concussion in a year is bad enough, but after sustaining two of them within nine weeks, that’s alarming.</p><p>Olave is a really talented receiver, but with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/saints-news-derek-carr-blame-chris-olave-concussion-according-cam-newton">poor quarterback play throughout his career with the Saints</a>, the 2024 campaign has been nothing but disappointing for reasons out of his control.</p><p>With his rookie contract coming up in a couple of seasons, Olave could try to leverage himself to play elsewhere if he’s able to return to football without serious brain complications.</p><p>Football is a dangerous sport, and the athletes know so going into it, but Olave should truly think about the impact concussions could have on his future outside of football.</p><p>And considering his designation for Week 17, it could be smartest to have the Saints’ receiver sit the rest of this season after already being eliminated from the playoffs.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Olave suffered a concussion in the Saints’ Week 9 loss against the Carolina Panthers. However, Olave could be returning for New Orleans’ Week 17 contest against the Las Vegas Raiders.</p><p>Olave has <a href="https://x.com/RossJacksonNOLA/status/1872396792882741431" rel="noopener">fully participated in practice</a> for two straight days, according to a practice report shared on Twitter/X by LouisianaSports.net’s Ross Jackson.</p><p>Getting Olave back on the field would be big for the Saints, as he caught 32 passes for 400 yards and one touchdown in the eight games he has appeared in this season, making him New Orleans’ third-leading receiver behind Alvin Kamara and Juwan Johnson.</p><p>While getting Olave back would be a small victory for the Saints, there are plenty of other gaps left by injuries they have to consider, particularly on the offensive side of the ball.</p><p>Quarterback Derek Carr (left hand), running back Kamara (groin), center Erik McCoy (elbow), and guard Lucas Patrick (knee) all did not participate in practice either of the last two days. There seems to be good news regarding him, as the Saints noted <a href="https://x.com/nick_underhill/status/1872025845029851524" rel="noopener">in their injury report</a> that if they had practiced on Christmas, he would have been a full participant.</p><p>With that news alone, there’s a good chance that Olave could return in the Saints’ next matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders. The Saints will gladly appreciate his return, as they’ve dealt with several injuries to the offense over the past few weeks, and the team has suffered because of it.</p><h2>Chris Olave close to returning for Saints</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Chris-Olave.jpg"><figcaption>Bob Donnan-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Chris <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/saints-news-chris-olave-breaks-silence-scary-concussion">Olave was hurt against the Carolina Panthers</a> earlier this year and had to go to the hospital for further evaluation. He was released from the hospital later that day, but the injury was already concerning for the wide receiver since it was his second concussion in four weeks. In their Week 6 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Olave had to leave the game because of a concussion.</p><p>Unfortunately for Olave, these weren’t the first concussions of his career. He suffered a concussion during his rookie season in 2022 in Week 5 and missed the following game. He was then removed from a Week 12 game against the Atlanta Falcons last year with a concussion but played the next week.</p><p>Olave had recently switched helmets instead of <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/42171503/saints-chris-olave-put-backboard-carted-concussion" rel="noopener">wearing a Guardian Cap</a> in games.</p><p>“I just felt like I had changed my helmet to the best helmet so the hit I took in the game, it didn’t really hurt as much as it did with the other helmet,” Olave said. “Once I switched helmets, I felt like I’d be good without the Guardian Cap.”</p><p>The Saints placed Olave on injured reserve after his second concussion this season and haven’t rushed him on coming back. It looks like he’s ready to return, and it should be a plus to the offense as they need some type of spark. Derek Carr and Alvin Kamara will not be returning for the rest of the season as they’ve suffered injuries late in the year, and that means the young players will be getting a bulk of the minutes on the field.</p><p>Interm coach Darren Rizzi has done a good job leading this group since taking over for Dennis Allen, and it will be interesting to see if he is a lead candidate for the job in the offseason.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The Saints played like a competent NFL team on Sunday and interim head coach <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/saints-news-darren-rizzi-truth-bomb-first-win-replacing-dennis-allen">Darren Rizzi got his first win</a> since being promoted from special teams coordinator.</p><p>Of course New Orleans is still lean on offense after losing receivers <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/saints-news-big-rashid-shaheed-injury-move">Rashid Shaheed to a season-ending knee injury</a> and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/saints-news-chris-olave-carted-off-panthers">Chris Olave to a brutal concussion</a> suffered in Week 9. Fortunately, Olave’s head injury won’t necessarily end his season. Rizzi has opted <a href="https://x.com/ErinESummers/status/1856058659865801148" rel="noopener">against ruling him out</a> for the year, allowing him time to heal on the IR, according to Saints’ reporter Erin Summers on X.</p><p>Olave got hurt against the Carolina Panthers last week and ended up needing to go to the hospital for further evaluation. He was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/saints-news-chris-olave-released-hospital">released from the hospital later that day</a> but the injury is concerning as it’s Olave’s second concussion in just four weeks. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/saints-news-chris-olave-gets-crushing-injured-reserve-update-latest-concussion">Saints moved Olave to injured reserve</a>, so he’ll sit out at least the next four weeks. And given his concussion history, that seems like the right move.</p><p>The Saints were looking healthy heading into Week 9. Quarterback <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/saints-news-derek-carr-officially-playing-week-9">Derek Carr was back</a> after missing three games with an oblique injury. Olave would make his second straight start since a concussion in Week 6 and Swiss-Army knife multi positional player Taysom Hill was on the field. Despite this, the Saints got edged out by the Panthers 23-22 for their seventh straight loss.</p><p>After the game, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/saints-news-new-orleans-fires-dennis-allen-week-9-loss-panthers">Saints fired head coach Dennis Allen</a>, replacing him with Rizzi on an interim basis. Now, a week later, New Orleans picked up its first win since Week 2. While the slim pass-catcher has a lengthy history of injury issues, his latest concussion has fans and media members criticizing Derek Carr for the play that forced him to leave the game on a stretcher.</p><p>Of those criticizing Carr, former quarterback Cam Newton <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVGFpba1hgo&amp;t=140s" rel="noopener">directly placed the blame</a> for Olave’s injury on his quarterback.</p><p>“[Chris Olave’s injury] is definitely Derek Carr’s fault,” Newton said on the ‘4th &amp; 1 with Cam Newton’ show. “He knows it’s his fault. Any quarterback knows, like, ‘Oh, s***, damn. My fault.’ In this case, you don’t get to say, ‘My fault, bro.’ ‘Cause, like I said, Olave is leaving like an olive due in large part because of your inaccuracy.”</p><p>On the play in question, Olave ran a deep crossing route over the middle of the field. With cornerback Dane Jackson on him, Carr’s pass was high, leaving Olave vulnerable to a big hit from safety Xavier Woods. The play resulted in an unnecessary roughness penalty with the Ohio State alum laying unconscious on the field.</p><p>Newton is not the only former player who believes Carr should be held accountable. Former Saints star and current free agent <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/michael-thomas-unloads-on-saints-qb-derek-carr-after-chris-olave-injury">Michael Thomas notably went on a rant</a> on X, formerly Twitter, condemning his former quarterback after the play. Wide receiver Chris Olave <a href="https://x.com/RapSheet/status/1855249765597880564" rel="noopener">may not see the field again</a> this season, per NFL Network. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/saints-news-new-orleans-wr-room-fans-puzzled-chris-olave-concussion-injury">Olave is dealing with an upper body injury</a> that’s left him on injured reserve.</p><p>Olave got hurt in a game against the Carolina Panthers. He was carted off the field in the contest. By going on injured reserve, Olave will have to sit at least four games. It appears his injury may be much more extensive. He is seeking medical advice on dealing with a concussion, per the outlet.</p><p>New Orleans is 2-7 on the season and has lost seven games in a row.</p><h2><b>Chris Olave has had injury problems in recent years</b></h2><p>Olave has suffered several concussions in the last few seasons. The wide receiver is expected to take his time trying to recover, and not rush back to the football field.</p><p>“We’re trying to figure out <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/42273184/saints-say-putting-wr-chris-olave-ir-table" rel="noopener">what’s the best now</a> for the long term,” Saints coach Darren Rizzi said, per ESPN. “There’s a process in which he’s going through. He met with our people and then there’s people outside the building. … Chris is going to be out right now for the short term, and then we’ll make a decision for the long term. But he is meeting with multiple people and everyone here, our medical staff has been in touch with all of them.”</p><p>Olave is certainly one of the best receivers on the team, so this is not good news for the squad. The wide receiver has 32 receptions for 400 yards and a touchdown this year.</p><p>The Saints started the season with a promising 2-0 record, but <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/saints-3-best-head-coach-candidates-firing-dennis-allen">the team has collapsed</a>. New Orleans is on a rough losing streak and has gotten blown out in a few of their games. Wide receivers Rashid Shaheed and Bub Means are already on injured reserve. Cedrick Wilson Jr. is listed as out because of a shoulder injury. General manager <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/saints-news-mickey-loomis-reveals-stance-search-new-head-coach-darren-rizzi">Mickey Loomis was vague in his response</a> to what the team’s plans were for the future and for a new head coach.</p><p>“That’s not something that we’re gonna be real active with right now. There’s plenty of time for that when the season ends,” Loomis declared. “Our focus has got to be on our team, our players, our coaches, and our staff. You learn more about who you have and the people you’re working with in adversity than you do when things are going well.</p><p>“As much as Katrina and that whole experience was difficult back in 2005, we learned a lot about the people that were with the Saints at that time. It drove a lot of decisions after that. So look, this is adversity, this is tough. It’s no fun losing games. It’s, you know, I can’t describe to you, how bad our fans feel.</p><p>“Believe me, we’re all feeling 10 times worse but you can’t just wallow in that. You have to get up off the mat and show some fight. That’s true for every single person in this building. We are gonna see what we’ve got over the next eight weeks.”</p><p>What all that means, or what Hurricane Katrina has to do with the Saints right now, for a franchise on a seven-game losing streak is anyone’s guess.</p><p>The Saints have over $48M in dead cap space next season, the most in the NFL, and carry a $51.5M cap hit for the 33-year-old Derek Carr. Despite the return of starting quarterback Derek Carr, the Saints fell to 2-7 on the season after a 23-22 loss to the Carolina Panthers. Adding injury to insult, Saints wideout <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/saints-news-chris-olave-carted-off-panthers">Chris Olave suffered a frightening concussion</a> during the game.</p><p>While attempting to catch a high pass over the middle in the first quarter of Week 9’s matchup against the Panthers, Olave was hit in the head and needed to be carted off the field. The third-year receiver was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/saints-news-chris-olave-released-hospital">taken to the hospital for further evaluation</a> but was released later that day.</p><p>Saints’ interim head coach Darren Rizzi said the <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/42235684/saints-chris-olave-see-specialists-concussions" rel="noopener">team is taking</a> Olave’s injury “day by day,” according to ESPN’s Katherine Terrell.</p><p>“He wants to go thoroughly through the process and making sure he’s making the best decision for Chris Olave, removing football from that equation. … What’s the best decision for the person? … So, my conversations with him and our medical staff, we’ve been thorough and his family’s going to be thorough with the process. I completely support that. Olave absorbed a big hit from Antoine Winfield Jr. in the first quarter and was ultimately ruled out for the remainder of the game. He suffered his first concussion this year against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and missed their next game against the Denver Broncos.</p><p>Olave suffered a concussion during his rookie season in 2022 in Week 5 and missed the following game. He was then removed from a Week 12 game against the Falcons last year with a concussion but played the next week.</p><p>Olave has recently switched helmets instead of <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/42171503/saints-chris-olave-put-backboard-carted-concussion" rel="noopener">wearing a Guardian Cap</a> in games.</p><p>“I just felt like I had changed my helmet to the best helmet so the hit I took in the game, it didn’t really hurt as much as it did with the other helmet,” Olave said. “Once I switched helmets, I felt like I’d be good without the Guardian Cap.”</p><p>He wore the new helmet against the Chargers and said he felt like he took less of an impact after taking a hit</p><p>“I was good man,” Olave said. “I know every big hit they kind of check for concussions and stuff, especially with my history.
