But losing Kamara? The best player on the team? Talk about a bummer.</p><p>And yet, just when things look the most dire, GM Mickey Loomis came in clutch with a nice piece of business, signing <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/chiefs-news-release-former-first-round-pick-week-15" rel="noopener">recently released running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire</a> to the practice squad in order to <a href="https://x.com/TomPelissero/status/1869506661804876022" rel="noopener">help bolster their depth chart</a>, according to the team’s official social media account.</p><p>Pandering? Eh, maybe so, but then again, is that really a bad thing? Saints fans and LSU fans have an incredible crossover, and CEH played on some of the best Tigers teams in recent memories, becoming a first-round pick in 202, largely off of his 1,414-yard junior season back in 2019. Factor in that he was born in Baton Rouge, and bringing in Edwards-Helaire feels like the perfect buy-low move to make fans pop in an otherwise disappointing season.</p><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Clyde-Edwards-Helaire-at-LSU.jpg"><figcaption>Christopher Hanewinckel-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><h2><b>Even Darren Rizzi is unclear when the Saints will have Alvin Kamara</b></h2><p>Discussing Kamara’s injury after Week 15, even head coach Darren Rizzi wasn’t sure what was going on with Kamara, noting that he had a groin injury but had <a href="https://www.nola.com/sports/saints/saints-alvin-kamara-groin-injury/article_ec68a818-bbf1-11ef-ade0-b7845a56146d.html" rel="noopener">no real timetable for his return</a>.</p><p>“He’s kind of dealing with a little bit of a groin adductor type of situation. It was very, very minor. I think he felt it on that diving touchdown catch, which was outstanding, by the way,” Rizzi said via Nola.com.</p><p>“So he’s going to get a couple of more opinions. A couple of more imaging things taken care of today, so we’ll kind of see where he’s at. At the moment, we kind of have the first set of images, and we’re going to kind of see what happens here with the second opinion. This means that CEH will miss at least the first four games of the 2024 season, including the season opener against the Ravens.</p><p>CEH regularly missed practices during training camp due to what seems to be a recurring illness. He didn’t elaborate much, except to mention that he and a friend were involved in a “self-defense situation” at that time while he was at LSU.</p><p>“That’s the day my best friend and I had a self-defense situation and I will say that’s probably where the majority of things stem from, but I wouldn’t necessarily say everything stemmed from that,” said Clyde Edwards-Helaire.</p><p>During his time at LSU, Edwards-Helaire and linebacker Jared Small arranged to meet 18-year-old Kobe Johnson to sell an electronic device. The meeting escalated when Johnson attempted to rob them, leading to Johnson being shot and killed.</p><p>Although District Attorney Hillar Moore concluded that Edwards-Helaire and Small were defending themselves, the traumatic experience left Edwards-Helaire with PTSD.</p><p>Neither Edwards-Helaire nor Small faced charges following the incident, and Edwards-Helaire went on to play in the Fiesta Bowl less than two weeks later. He was then selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, sixteen months after the event.</p><h2><b>How PTSD has affected Clyde Edwards-Helaire</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Clyde-Edwards-Helaire-catching-a-pass-for-the-Chiefs.jpg"><figcaption>Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>During his Thursday comments, Edwards-Helaire shared that he has been hospitalized in the past due to persistent vomiting. In Week 17, they’ll face the Cincinnati Bengals with a few key injury updates to watch for. The statuses of Isiah Pacheco, Clyde Edwards-Helaire and L’Jarius Sneed will be officially decided soon.</p><p>According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, both Pacheco (concussion, shoulder) and Edwards-Helaire (illness) are <a href="https://x.com/AdamSchefter/status/1741329611206594839?s=20" rel="noopener">expected to play</a>. Both of the running backs were listed as questionable. But for Sneed, the cornerback who is <a href="https://x.com/RapSheet/status/1741386963805245707?s=20" rel="noopener">dealing with a calf injury</a>, there is greater uncertainty, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.</p><p>Rapaport reports that Sneed “is considered to be a game-time decision for today, source said. He improved dramatically from Friday to Saturday, so at least he has a chance. But he didn’t practice all week, leaving his status in doubt.”</p><p>The Chiefs need to cleanse their palate after a humiliating home loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. The Bengals won’t be a pushover, though, as they’re still in the playoff hunt and need to bounce back from a loss against their own division rival, the Pittsburgh Steelers.</p><p>Having both of their running backs is a great development for the Chiefs. Heading into the game, fantasy football fans were geeked about the possibility of getting big production from a huge assortment of Patrick Mahomes weapons in Kansas City.</p><p>One position battle to watch was the situation involving running backs Isiah Pacheco and Clyde Edwards-Helaire. Pacheco is an incredible talent who can create matchup problems and big plays both on the ground and in the passing game.</p><p>Edwards-Helaire got a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/chiefs-make-crucial-fifth-year-option-decision-on-clyde-edwards-helaire" rel="noopener">surprising contract related decision</a> this past offseason. His role has only gotten smaller since then, putting his future with Kansas City in doubt.</p><p>Edwards-Helaire is coming into 2023 firmly in third, at best, on the Chiefs’ depth chart. Isiah Pacheco took the Chiefs’ starting running back job last season and veteran Jerrick McKinnon is above him, too. CEH’s fifth-year option was declined, setting him up to be a free agent after this season.</p><p>Although his prominence within the Chiefs offense is on the decline, Edwards-Helaire is simply focusing on working hard and doing what he can to <a href="https://www.espn.com/blog/kansas-city-chiefs/post/_/id/31629/where-does-clyde-edwards-helaire-fit-into-the-chiefs-offense" rel="noopener">earn playing time</a>, according to Adam Teicher of ESPN.</p><p>“I can’t think two years ahead from now or the position I will be in 12 months from now,” Edwards-Helaire said, via ESPN. “It was really coming in and figuring out and seeing the things I can work on and from that point on rolling with it…I know what I have to do in order to get on the field and do the things I need to do this year.”</p><p>Edwards-Helaire got a lot of reps during minicamp with Pacheco and McKinnon out. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said that he did a good job and that he obviously has talent. The Chiefs will always be centered around Patrick Mahomes but complementing his unreal talent with a good rushing attack is key. The depth at running back in Kansas City gives each player fresher legs and puts more wrinkles into the offense.</p><p>“We’re going to need that three-, four-headed monster,” Edwards-Helaire said, via ESPN. “It’s a 17-game season.”</p><p>The Chiefs getting production from their running backs by committee should pay off over the long season, including the inevitable playoff games that the team will play. With Pacheco <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/chiefs-news-andy-reid-drops-injury-update-on-isiah-pacheco-before-training-camp" rel="noopener">still recovering from injuries</a>, Edwards-Helaire will have to stay ready to play a big role. Head coach Andy Reid had to get creative in order to fill the void left by injuries to players such as Mecole Hardman, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Kadarius Toney, and Jerick McKinnon, to name a handful. Apparently, coach Reid’s tactics included Clyde Edwards-Helaire playing an unexpected role in their preparations for Super Bowl LVII.</p><p>Actually, it wasn’t just one role Edwards-Helaire played. According to the 24-year-old running back, he was actually asked to play nearly every position possible in the build-up to the big game:</p><p>“I practiced that week, the whole week,” Edwards-Helaire said, via Charles Goldman of Chiefs Wire. “I played receiver that week. I played the Z and the Zebra. I started practicing, coach kind of told me he (trusted me) to keep things going smoothly for the biggest game of the year. With the team not picking up his option, Edwards-Helaire will now hit free agency following the 2023 campaign.</p><p>During his NFL career so far, Clyde Edwards-Helaire has already seen his role change drastically. During his rookie season, he was a key contributor in the backfield. Over 13 games, he rushed for 803 yards and four touchdowns on 181 carries. Through the air, he added 36 receptions for 297 receiving yards and one touchdown.</p><p>In 2021, Edwards-Helaire struggled to make the same impact. While carrying the ball 119 times, he rushed for 517 yards and four touchdowns. In the passing game, he hauled in 19 receptions for 129 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Edwards-Helaire was also held back by a sprained MCL and appeared in just 10 games.</p><p>This past season, Edwards-Helaire was once again limited to just 10 games. A sprained ankle sidelined him for the final stretch of the season. Before the injury, he struggled to earn carries. He finished the season rushing for 302 yards and three touchdowns on just 71 carries. Through the air, he still played a role within the Chiefs offense, recording 17 receptions for 151 receiving yards and three touchdowns.</p><p>Eventually, Clyde Edwards-Helaire lost the starting job to rookie running back Isiah Pacheo. It now appears that the Chiefs are willing to see what they have in the former seventh-round selection heading into 2023 after not adding another running back in the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/chiefs-2023-nfl-draft-grades-every-pick" rel="noopener">draft</a>.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

If the Chiefs decide to pick up Edwards-Helaire’s fifth-year option, the versatile running back will then earn $5.461 million next year.</p><p>The Chiefs have until May 1 to decide on whether they will pick up Edwards-Helaire’s option for the 2024 campaign.</p><p>During a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDh9NtutLac" rel="noopener">press conference</a> on Thursday, Chiefs general manager Brett Veach took some time to touch on this matter.</p><p>“We have some time here, we’ll see,” Veach said. “I think we’ll go through the draft, and we’ll handle our business and make smart decisions — like we always do. I don’t think we’ve reached a decision on anything yet.</p><p>“But safe to say, once we get through the draft, we’ll look at our board, we’ll look at our offseason business we have to attend to, some different players, and contact stuff. And we’ll handle all that after the draft.”</p><p>Edwards-Helaire is coming off of a roller-coaster 2022 campaign in which he tallied 453 yards from scrimmage in 10 regular season games played. He was placed on injured reserve in November due to a high-ankle sprain injury. He was activated off IR days before Super Bowl 57, but he wound up being a healthy scratch for the game, as Kansas City instead rolled with running backs Isiah Pacheco, Jerick McKinnon, and Ronald Jones against the Philadelphia Eagles.</p><p>Edwards-Helaire, Pacheco, and La’Mical Perine are currently the only running backs on the Chiefs roster.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

However, after just three seasons, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/chiefs-news-chiefs-set-for-major-clyde-edwards-helaire-decision" rel="noopener">Edwards-Helaire no longer</a> looks to be in the Chiefs’ plan.</p><p>Teams around the NFL are viewing Edwards-Helaire as a <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/insider/insider/story/_/id/35775366/nfl-combine-buzz-latest-news-rumors-free-agency-trades-2023-draft" rel="noopener">potential trade target</a>, via ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. While the Chiefs aren’t actively shopping CEH per say, Kansas City is willing to listen to offers.</p><p>After drafting Isaiah Pacheco in 2022, Clyde Edwards-Helaire fell out of favor with the Chiefs. CEH received just 71 carries and turned that into 302 yards and three touchdowns, both career-lows. Over his NFL career, the Chiefs’ rusher has gained 1,622 yards and scored 11 touchdowns.</p><p>Edwards-Helaire is just 23-years-old. He has a first-round draft pedigree and showed flashes of potential during his rookie season. Teams around the league would be willing to take a chance on the running due to that potential. If the Chiefs decide to trade him, these three teams make the most sense for Edwards-Helaire.</p><h2><b>New Orleans Saints</b></h2><p>The New Orleans Saints already have a star running back in Alvin Kamara. But after signing quarterback Derek Carr, New Orleans could look to build out the rest of their offense.</p><p>Even with Kamara in the fold, the Saints struggled at running the ball in 2022. New Orleans ranked 19th in the league, averaging 116.6 yards per game. Kamara is now facing a potential NFL suspension after facing assault charges.</p><p>If Kamara were to miss time, New Orleans would be in desperate need of a running back. However, even if he isn’t suspended, the Saints need more help in their RB room. Mark Ingram and David Johnson are set to be free agents, leaving just Dwayne Washington and Eno Benjamin behind Kamara.</p><p>The Saints have made a <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/35797963/sources-saints-front-runners-sign-qb-derek-carr" rel="noopener">big commitment</a> to Carr, signing him to a $150 million contract. Adding more weapons around their quarterback would help ensure both Carr and New Orleans’ success.</p><h2><b>Tampa Bay Buccaneers</b></h2><p>The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have released veteran RB Leonard Fournette. More rushing opportunities are expected to open up for Rachaad White. However, it’s going to take a lot more than just White to fix the Buccaneers’ rushing issues.</p><p>Tampa Bay finished last season dead-last in the NFL, averaging just 76.9 rushing yards per game. They were the only team not to break 80+ rushing yards per game. By releasing Fournette, the Bucs are planning a new strategy in their RB room.</p><p>White <a href="https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2023/03/06/rachaad-white-you-can-draft-bijan-robinson-or-whoever-im-going-to-win-that-job/" rel="noopener">is confident</a> that he will be the team’s starting running back next season. However, he ran for just 481 yards and a touchdown last season. The Buccaneers would be smart to add some protection alongside White.</p><p>With Tom Brady retiring, the Buccaneers’ offense is set to look much different than last year. Tampa could look to make sure their running numbers improve by bringing in Edwards-Helaire.</p><h2><b>New York Giants</b></h2><p>The New York Giants’ running back situation will ultimately be decided by Saquon Barkley. However, if Barkley were the leave the Giants, New York would have a massive hole at running back.</p><p>Barkley is set to hit the free agent market after five years with the Giants. New York hasn’t found middle ground on a long-term extension and <a href="https://www.northjersey.com/story/sports/nfl/giants/2023/03/06/giants-daniel-jones-contract-saquon-barkley-contract-franchise-tag/69976706007/" rel="noopener">franchise tagging</a> Barkley is in play. However, with quarterback Daniel Jones also a franchise tag target, Barkley might not get the deal he desires.</p><p>If Barkley were to leave, New York only has Gary Brightwell under contract. Brightwell has just 32 rushing attempts at the NFL level.</p><p>The Giants’ top priority at running back is bringing Barkley back. Naturally, roster depth will attract interest from around the league.</p><p>Multiple teams are <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/insider/insider/story/_/id/35775366/nfl-combine-buzz-latest-news-rumors-free-agency-trades-2023-draft" rel="noopener">eyeing running back</a> Clyde Edwards-Helaire as a possible trade target, according to Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano of ESPN. The Chiefs will of course answer the phone if any offers come in, but they are not actively seeking a trade partner.</p><p>The latter part of the report is intriguing as many fans probably anticipated a bit more eagerness from the KC front office following a strong rookie season by Isiah Pacheco. He totaled 830 rushing yards with five touchdowns and a noteworthy 4.9 yards per carry. Pacheco capped off the campaign with a score in the Super Bowl. The reins to the backfield will presumably be his, but Edwards-Helaire could still provide value as a change-of-pace back.</p><p>The 2020 first round pick fell out of favor midway through the season due to uneven production and stalwart play from Pacheco and veteran Jerick McKinnon. He dealt with an ankle injury that kept him sidelined for the stretch run. Edwards-Helaire is still only 23 years old and remains a red zone threat with 17 touchdowns in his three seasons of football. That upside might be too tantalizing for the Chiefs to pass up, especially with McKinnon hitting free agency.</p><p>Ultimately, it could come down to the trade offer. A team hurting for running back depth could look to the NFL Draft in April instead of giving up a mid or late-round pick. Though, championship experience and a proven ability to score at the professional level are not things that will pop up on any scouting reports.</p><p>Kansas City seems to know that, too.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He played in 10 games for Kansas City, earning 302 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns on 71 attempts. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/chiefs-news-clyde-edwards-helaire-kadarius-toney-injury-updates-after-win-over-chargers" rel="noopener">Clyde Edwards-Helaire last played</a> in a 30-27 win over the Los Angeles Chargers in late November, earning nine yards on two tries before he went down with an ankle injury.</p><p>“As far as the injuries go, Clyde (Edwards-Helaire) has a high ankle sprain,” Reid said, via Chiefs Wire. “Kadarius Toney’s hamstring tightened up on him.
