Tom Brady’s retirement and the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/raiders-news-derek-carr-las-vegas-admission-signing-saints" rel="noopener">Derek Carr signing</a> give the Saints the only reliable starting quarterback in the NFC South. Not only is the Saints’ division wide open for the taking, but the conference doesn’t feature many sure-fire Super Bowl contenders. According to Saints linebacker Demario Davis, the list is even longer.</p><p>“If you believe in the Saints and you’re a fan of the Saints, you should be excited right now. That’s all I’ll say,” Demario Davis said, via ESPN’s Katherine Terrell.</p><p>Davis said the Saints are excited about 2023 for “reasons undisclosed,” noting that people will see when it’s time, Terrell reports.</p><p>It’s hard to know what Davis might be referring to or if he has actual reasons in mind. No matter what Davis’ statement could mean, there’s no doubt that New Orleans fans can feel reasonably good about the team’s chances of getting back to the playoffs.</p><p>The Saints have the necessary pieces on both sides of the ball to win the NFC South. Carr is coming off a poor season with the Las Vegas Raiders, but he’s a clear upgrade over Andy Dalton and Jameis Winston. Chris Olave is<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/chris-olave-fantasy-football-outlook-for-the-2023-season" rel="noopener"> a potential star</a> after having a 1,000-yard season as a rookie in just 15 games. If Michael Thomas can stay healthy, New Orleans’ offense can be much improved from a year ago.</p><p>Davis has been an All-Pro in four straight seasons. Only three teams <a href="https://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/opponent-yards-per-play">allowed fewer</a> yards per play than New Orleans last year.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The NFL iron man, who’s missed just one game in his career and didn’t come off the field for a single defensive snap last season, may be able to get back to Saints training camp practices soon and keep his streak alive in Week 1 vs. Tennessee Titans.</p><p>Davis suffered a calf injury on August 5 and hasn’t practiced <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/saints-training-camp-battles-roster-2023-nfl-season" rel="noopener">in Saints training camp</a> since. However, the latest Demario Davis injury update is that he is now back on the field, albeit in a limited capacity.</p><p>The All-Pro LB is back in practice, and USA Today <a href="https://saintswire.usatoday.com/2023/08/16/demario-davis-injury-report-saints-training-camp-practice-schedule/?taid=64dcdd77b69a810001a2a31e&amp;utm_campaign=trueanthem&amp;utm_medium=trueanthem&amp;utm_source=twitter" rel="noopener">reports that</a> “After team stretches, Davis worked by himself to the side under supervision of team medical staff. Davis most likely won’t see any preseason action, at worst as a precaution, due to the injury. But his return to practice suggests he should be ready for the season.”</p><p>Davis came into the league in 2012 as a third-round pick of the New York Jets and started three games during his rookie season. After that, he started every game he played in for the next three seasons, 15 out of 16 games in 2016 for the Cleveland Browns, all 16 in 2017 back with the Jets, and every game for the next three-plus seasons with the Saints.</p><p>In Week 16 of 2021, Davis finally snapped his streak when he missed a game vs. the Miami Dolphins on the Reserve/Covid-19 List.</p><p>After that, though, Davis got back to iron man ways, starting every game for the rest of that season and in 2022. The 2022 campaign was particularly notable for the LB, as Davis was the only player at his position to play every defensive snap for his team that season. The veteran was on the field for all 1,132 plays, which marked the second time he did that. But the Saints star’s intentions with his rant do ring true to some degree.</p><p>There have been a <a href="https://www.ajc.com/sports/mike-check-blog/here-we-go-again-nfl-still-has-double-standard-with-black-coaches/2L7DTCGPCFBIHBUVRGHDGPX2UA/">handful of articles</a> detailing the quick hook on Black coaches and the struggle for many to even get in the door. Even the NFL has taken affirmative action to adjust the Rooney Rule within the past couple of seasons in order to afford more opportunities for minority coaching hires.</p><p>But while it’s one thing to try and spark interest in more minority coaching hires, it’s another to actually get teams to bite. The league itself acknowledges that there is supposedly a “double standard” when it comes to assessing Black coaches, this according to NFL executive VP for football operations Troy Vincent.</p><p><a href="https://www.ajc.com/sports/mike-check-blog/here-we-go-again-nfl-still-has-double-standard-with-black-coaches/2L7DTCGPCFBIHBUVRGHDGPX2UA/">Via</a> The Atlanta Journal-Constitution:</p><blockquote>“I don’t think that that is something that we should shy away from,” Vincent said, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2022/01/11/black-nfl-coaches-firings-troy-vincent/">via the Washington Post</a>. “But that is all part of some of the things that we need to fix in the system. We want to hold everyone to why does one, let’s say, get the benefit of the doubt to be able to build or take bumps and bruises in this process of getting a franchise turned around when others are not afforded that latitude?”</blockquote><p>According to AJC writer Michael Cunningham’s latest piece and examined data from ESPN’s Luke Knox, Black coaches often <a href="https://www.ajc.com/sports/mike-check-blog/here-we-go-again-nfl-still-has-double-standard-with-black-coaches/2L7DTCGPCFBIHBUVRGHDGPX2UA/">statistically enter worse coaching</a> situations in Year 1 of their tenure but would still outperform expectations compared to the larger sample size of their white peers.</p><p>David Culley experienced a somewhat similar scenario in inheriting the unappealing amalgam that was the Texans, who were still reeling off the infamous tenure of Bill O’Brien and the sexual assault allegations on star quarterback Deshaun Watson. While 4-13 isn’t anything to write home about, it’s about what you would expect from a team mostly devoid of the talent it had just two seasons ago.</p><p>Brian Flores, meanwhile, just steered the Dolphins to two winning seasons with a 19-14 collective record in that span. The conflict reportedly <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/dolphins-news-tua-tagovailoas-future-in-miami-gets-major-hint-after-brian-flores-firing/">lied within inherent disagreements</a> between Flores and ownership. While each situation, like Flores’, can be considered unique – the end result still stayed the same.</p><p>Until changes made by the NFL start bleeding out onto the franchises it oversees, the message from Saints’ Demario Davis and various voices around the league remains the same.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
