Detroit held the Green Bay Packers to just 266 yards of total offense in Week 1, including just 78 rushing yards. Two of the Packers’ three touchdowns came on explosive plays, which upset Sheppard.</p><p>In Week 2, the Lions face a Bears offense that was up-and-down in Week 1. Chicago executed a near-perfect opening drive to take a 7-0 lead, but tapered off. Johnson’s offense ended with 317 yards of total offense and did not reach the end zone again until the end of the game.</p><p>Although Sheppard is in his first year as the Lions’ defensive coordinator, he has spent his entire coaching career practicing against Johnson’s offense. Now, to add insult to injury, Parsons could be complicating <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/detroit-lions/lions-news-gm-brad-holmes-potential-aidan-hutchinson-contract-extension">Detroit’s efforts to extend edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson</a>.</p><p>ESPN’s Dan Graziano <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/46208962/nfl-week-2-buzz-news-updates-fantasy-intel-questions-predictions" rel="noopener">explained the situation</a> in an article published on Wednesday. He noted that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/detroit-lions/lions-news-jameson-williams-agree-to-83-million-extension">Detroit has already extended Jameson Williams</a>, but still needs to get a deal done with Hutchinson.</p><p>“They’ve had productive talks but no agreement yet, and considering the extent to which the Micah Parsons deal set a new bar for edge rusher contracts, it could get complicated,” Graziano wrote on Wednesday.</p><p>Parsons signed a four-year, $188 million contract with the Packers after his trade from the Cowboys.</p><p>That means the price tag just went up on Hutchinson. That is especially troublesome for the Lions because they’ll soon have plenty more players to extend.</p><p>“The Lions have a lot of incentive to get this done before next spring, when their stellar 2023 draft class — including Jahmyr Gibbs, Jack Campbell, Sam LaPorta and Brian Branch — becomes extension-eligible for the first time,” Graziano added.</p><p>It will be interesting to see if Detroit does extend Hutchinson before next offseason as Graziano suggests.</p><h2><b>Should the Lions have extended Aidan Hutchinson before 2025 season?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Aidan-Hutchinson-expects-to-be-at-full-speed-this-season.jpg"><figcaption>Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Lions may have to pay through the nose if they want to keep Hutchinson.</p><p>So should Detroit have tried harder to extend Hutch before Parsons got his huge extension from the Packers?</p><p>Parsons likely did not factor into Detroit’s decision-making process here. For one reason, there was plenty of mystery surrounding <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/nfl-stories/nfl-rumors-3-teams-were-waiting-in-wings-if-packers-micah-parsons-trade-fell-apart">whether or not Parsons would be traded</a> at all.</p><p>One could argue that Parsons was going to be paid soon, one way or the other. But even so, the Lions cannot control every other NFL team. They also should not feel forced to make big decisions because of what other teams are doing.</p><p>There’s also Hutchinson’s injury to consider.</p><p>Hutch deserves credit for <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/detroit-lions/lions-news-aidan-hutchinson-reveals-the-bright-side-to-leg-injury">battling back from his serious leg injury</a> from 2024. But while Hutchinson’s recovery is impressive, it likely put him at a disadvantage during negotiations.</p><p>It is reasonable for the Lions to want proof that Hutch is still his old self on the field before extending him.</p><p>As such, how well Hutchinson plays in 2025 could go a long way towards guaranteeing himself future money.</p><p>Perhaps Hutchinson will make a splash in Week 2 against the Bears.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The Lions defense couldn’t stop the bleeding, and Jared Goff and company failed to get anything going against the new-look Packers defense with the addition of Micah Parsons.</p><p>Goff knows that the Lions need to be a lot better if they are going to reach their goals, get back to the playoffs and make a run at the Super Bowl this season. He believes that if they just <a href="https://www.mlive.com/lions/2025/09/lions-jared-goff-optimistic-offense-will-find-its-footing-after-sloppy-debut.html" rel="noopener">clean up the operation</a> a little bit, they will be able to get back on track this season, via Benjamin Raven of MLive.</p><p>“Just sloppy. Just have to be better in the details and communicate better,” Goff said on Wednesday. “I mentioned this after the game, it starts with me. I’ve got to communicate better and take a little bit of stress off of those guys from a communication aspect.</p><p>“Yeah, just be better. Just get back to our bread and butter. We’ve got good athletes. We’ve got good players. We’ve got good plays. The Week 2 matchup’s atmosphere brings the perfect opportunity for Bears vs. Lions bold predictions.</p><p>Chicago head coach Ben Johnson will have his first opportunity to face his old team. But with the game being played at Ford Field, Detroit will be looking to show him why he made the wrong decision leaving in the first place. Both sides know each other extremely well.</p><p>Falling to 0-2, with both loses coming to a division foe, could be devastating. The NFL season is long, but the NFC North will be one of the toughest divisions to win in football. As the Bears and Lions look to prove they have what it takes, it’s time for our Week 2 bold predictions.</p><h2><b>Caleb Williams throws for 300 yards</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Bears-QB-Caleb-Williams-running-from-a-Vikings-defender.jpg"><figcaption>David Banks-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Caleb Williams looked like a former No. 1 overall pick on his first drive of the game. He led the Bears 61 yards down the field, ending the opportunity with a nine-yard rushing touchdown. But from there, his play was shaky at best. Overall, Williams completed 21-of-35 passes for 210 yards and a touchdown. Still, Johnson will certainly look to make adjustments before Week 2.</p><p>The Lions offer the perfect opportunity for Williams to find his footing through the air. In Week 1, Green Bay Packers quarterback completed 16-of-22 passes for 188 yards. And that was with the Packers not having to throw the ball, holding a 27-6 lead with less than five minutes to play.</p><p>The Bears won’t be in that situation. Williams will have to thrown all night. Detroit just saw cornerback Terrion Arnold<a href="https://x.com/JFowlerESPN/status/1965079137779159511" rel="noopener"> suffer a groin injury</a>. While it isn’t considered long-term, there’s still a chance he doesn’t suit up. If Arnold is on the sidelines, Williams’ chances of surpassing 300 yards increases.</p><p>Chicago’s quarterback managed to hit the 300+ yard mark four times as a rookie. One of those games was in Week 15 against the Lions. He’ll repeat that feat in Week 2.</p><h2><b>Rome Odunze will receive 150+ of those yards </b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Rome-Odunze.jpg"><figcaption>David Banks-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>There is a clear growing connection between Williams and Odunze. Both being former top 10 picks, they will shape the core of Chicago’s offense for the foreseeable future. The Bears came up short against the Minnesota Vikings, but Odunze looked impressive.</p><p>He led the team with six receptions and nine targets, catching Williams’ lone touchdown pass. DJ Moore led the team with 62 yards, and Olamide Zaccheaus (42 yards) outgained Odunze’s 37. But it’s clear that when Williams looks downfield to pass, Odunze is already one of his favorite targets.</p><p>The sophomore could be pushed into a heavier workload in Week 2 based on DJ Moore’s injury status. He was <a href="https://sports.yahoo.com/article/dj-moore-injury-updates-latest-031846776.html" rel="noopener">forced to leave the field</a> after taking a big hit and grimacing in pain. Moore did eventually return, but the Bears will certainly be weary of his status throughout the week of practice.</p><p>But even if Moore plays, Odunze is poised to put on a show against the Lions. If Williams is hitting 300 yards passing, at least one Chicago receiver is set to pop off. The Lions may have only scored 13 points in Week 1, but that seems poised to change. While quarterback Jared Goff and company will ultimately need to earn that win, the atmosphere around the matchup is favoring Detroit’s side.</p><p>In Week 1, the Bears held a 17-6 lead over the Vikings entering the fourth quarter. But when Chicago’s offense stalled out, Minnesota was able to take advantage, scoring back-to-back touchdowns. The Bears were deflated as the Vikings’ sidelines were erupting. And that game was played at Soldier Field.</p><p>The Lions understand the lofty expectations placed on their shoulders after winning the NFC North. Falling to an immediate 0-2 would send shockwaves through the organization. If nothing else, head coach Dan Campbell will make sure his franchise understands the situation completely.</p><p>If Williams and the Bears can handle that pressure, perhaps they have a stronger chance of knocking off the Lions. But Chicago wasn’t able to finish cohesively in Week 1. There are sure to be changes, but the Bears self sabotaged throughout the loss. Chicago will keep things close and the final score will look similar to how it did against Minnesota. According to him, he did not mean to step on Rodgers. And I’m getting pushed back,” Suh said. “I don’t have eyes on the back of my head to see what’s going on and what he’s doing. And I think that’s why the NFL at the end of the day is like, look, I’m not looking at where he’s at, I just got done fighting two or three of you dudes.”</p><p>Suh compared his play to some others that received fines.</p><p>“You believe what you want to believe at the end of the day and I got fined for it rightfully so or not. That’s where everybody’s biased opinion or unbiased opinion to do it,” Suh said. “But at the end of the day, those things happen. There’s times where people are really intentional. And that’s exactly what one ESPN analyst seems to think.</p><p>ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky <a href="https://x.com/PatMcAfeeShow/status/1965460896110752049" rel="noopener">did not like what he saw</a> from Detroit’s offense in Week 1.</p><p>The former Lions quarterback highlighted Detroit’s lack of schematic advantages against Green Bay.</p><p>“The Lions offensively were as fun to watch. You would look forward to putting on their tape and watching it. And you would just marvel at the ways they would just create advantages for their players,” Orlovsky said on Tuesday via The Pat McAfee Show. “That the way they would create leverage advantage, or numbers advantage, or chunk plays. I saw one, and I think it was a busted coverage by Green Bay more than an advantage created by Detroit.”</p><p>Detroit could not control the line of scrimmage and never challenged Green Bay downfield. They rolled to a <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/boxscore/_/gameId/401772722">27-13 victory</a> over the defending division champions. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/green-bay-packers/packers-news-jordan-love-micah-parsons-mixed-injury-update-week-1-lions">Love and the offense set the tone</a> with an 83-yard opening touchdown drive that included two third-down conversions. What he delivered <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/green-bay-packers/packers-news-why-dan-orlovsky-picking-jordan-love-as-mvp">instead was MVP-style efficiency</a> He tallied 16 completions on 22 attempts, 188 yards, and two touchdowns for a sparkling 128.6 passer rating. He connected with Romeo Doubs on a 20-yard strike to open the game and later found tight end Tucker Kraft for a 15-yard score. Jayden Reed added the second touchdown grab, hauling in another well-placed throw.</p><p>Yes, Love cooled off a bit in the second half. He missed a couple of throws he would want back. That said, his first-half command was undeniable. He completed passes to 10 different receivers over four quarters, keeping Detroit’s defense guessing and preventing them from keying on any one target. The ability to orchestrate three straight scoring drives to start the game reflected a quarterback fully in control of his offense.</p><h2><b>The long road to QB1</b></h2><p>Love’s performance against Detroit didn’t happen in a vacuum. It was the product of years of development, doubt, and resilience. Recall that the Bakersfield, California native played at Utah State from 2016 to 2019. He threw for 8,600 yards and 60 touchdowns. Green Bay saw enough to trade up in the 2020 NFL Draft, selecting him 26th overall. As we all know, however, his rookie season was spent inactive. And Green Bay pretty much dominated the contest throughout.</p><h2><b>Lions HC Dan Campbell looking for better days</b></h2><p>Campbell said he believed his team <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/46192910/lions-falter-opener-campbell-calls-issues-correctable" rel="noopener">would be better</a> in the season opener, according to ESPN.</p><p>“I thought we would be cleaner than we were,” Campbell said. “I thought we’d be much cleaner than we were. And it wasn’t as clean, but there again, you’re talking about a few plays that were critical. But, like I told the team, these are so correctable. Everything that showed up is so correctable, and we will hit it head-on.”</p><p>With new offensive and defensive coordinators, it may take time for the Lions to find a strong footing this season.</p><p>Campbell said his team found the bad spots too often.</p><p>“We made some critical errors at the worst times possible,” Campbell said. “And if you don’t do those, you take those out of the equation, it looks different. You feel like it could be a totally different scenario, but we did make those critical errors at the worst time. So, we’re going to learn from it.</p><p>“We’ll clean it up. It gives us a little barometer of where we’re at Game 1, and that’s OK. It’s always about improving, no matter what. We’re going to take it and we’re going to improve.”</p><p>Quarterback Jared Goff said better days are ahead.</p><p>“We’ve got good players,” Goff said. “We’ve got good coaches. We’ll be fine. There needs to be an urgency of improvement. There has to be. He owned up to all of Detroit’s failings, though he did say that everything that went wrong is fixable.</p><p>He also gave the Packers their due credit for dominating in the season opener.</p><p>“That team played well,” Campbell said after the game, per The Athletic’s Colton Pouncy. “Credit to them and coach LaFleur. Morton orchestrated a bland attack that did not seem to have any answers for Green Bay’s deep coverage shells.</p><p>“They play deep coverage, man,” Campbell said. “They play a lot of Cover 2, they’ll play some three buzz and they keep everything in front of them. That’s how that defense is designed and so we knew that and the plan was to stay patient. Be patient and I thought Goff was. We took what was there and felt like eventually those shots would show. Just couldn’t quite get to them, you know? By the time you get a chance, or you hope you do, you’re down two scores. But that’s the nature of this defense and we weren’t able to generate seven when we got in the red zone.”</p><p>The Lions only managed 246 yards on offense, a pitiful result for what has been one of the league’s best units.</p><p>Detroit tried to force the running game early and often. They attempted 21 rushing plays, when counting an end around to Jameson Williams, and only managed 46 yards.</p><p>Nobody is asking Morton to suddenly become a tactical genius or trick play artist like Johnson. But it remains to be seen exactly what Morton’s vision for Detroit’s offense is after Week 1.</p><p>Detroit’s Week 2 matchup against Chicago and Ben Johnson suddenly looks more important than ever.</p><h2><b>Lions o-line repeatedly showed its inexperience against the Packers</b></h2><p>Perhaps another reason why Morton struggled in Week 1 is Detroit’s offensive line.</p><p>It is no secret that the Lions have plenty of turnover on the o-line. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/detroit-lions/lions-news-frank-ragnow-makes-shocking-retirement-decision-ahead-of-2025-campaign">Frank Ragnow retired</a> and veteran Kevin Zeitler left to join the Titans.</p><p>That puts Detroit in the unfamiliar position of having a good, not great, offensive line.</p><p>The Lions still have some promising players. But it will clearly take them some time to gel together and work well as a unit.</p><p>Second-year guard Christian Mahogany is now Detroit’s left guard. Former left guard Graham Glasgow slid back over to center and rookie Tate Ratledge is in at right guard.</p><p>The trio struggled mightily in Green Bay.</p><p>They failed to open up running lanes for Gibbs and Montgomery. They also did not hold up well enough in pass protection either.</p><p>Part of the problem was miscommunications. That is perhaps <a href="https://x.com/packers/status/1964819271885660338" rel="noopener">best evidenced by this blown assignment</a> that almost resulted in a safety.</p><p>Campbell is right that this problem (inexperience and lack of chemistry) <i>can </i>be fixed.</p><p>The question is whether or not the Lions can stack wins while they work on it.</p><h2><b>Where was Detroit’s pass rush in Week 1?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Aidan-Hutchinson-on-July-20-2025.jpg"><figcaption>© Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Finally, we could not let Detroit’s defensive line off the hook.</p><p>Aidan Hutchinson, Marcus Davenport, and the rest of Detroit’s edge rushers did not play nearly well enough against the Packers.</p><p>The Lions were unable to create any consistent pressure. They did not sack Jordan Love and only had two quarterback hits throughout the entire game.</p><p>Detroit’s defense was especially an issue in the first quarter. The Packers marched down the field almost unopposed to start the game. That helped swing momentum in their favor.</p><p>It will be interesting to see what changes, if any, defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard makes in Week 2.</p><p>I would love to see the Lions learn from the game tape from Week 1 and come up with a new plan for next week.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
