He can handle the ball out of the backfield, particularly in short yardage situations, run routes as a receiver, and block effectively as well. Running back Elijah Mitchell <a href="https://www.49ers.com/news/49ers-announce-moves-for-initial-53-man-roster-of-2024-released-waived-pup-injured-reserve-list" rel="noopener">was placed on</a> season-ending injured reserve with a hamstring injury.</p><p>The 26-year-old back has spent his entire career with the 49ers and was a key contributor in each of the last three seasons. While he is clearly behind Christian McCaffery on the depth chart, it is still a big loss for San Francisco. The move leaves them with Jordan Mason, Patrick Taylor Jr, and rookie Isaac Guerendo behind McCaffery.</p><p>Each of those players now has a great chance to take over the second running back spot on the depth chart. The 49ers know that they cannot overuse the injury-prone McCaffery and must get production from other places. If it is on their roster, they will figure out which player to give the carries to before week one against the Jets.</p><p>There are also options on the open market to come in and take some carries from McCaffery. Kareem Hunt, Jerick McKinnon, and Matt Breida are <a href="https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/_/year/2024/status/available/position/rb/sort/contract_value" rel="noopener">all unsigned</a> after training camp. The 49ers have options to replace Elijah Mitchell in the regular season. Without a second running back to break off big runs, they won’t have that.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/49ers-news-manti-teo-brutally-honest-why-49ers-not-nfc-west-favorite">NFC West has three other teams</a> who are looking to make the playoffs this season. The Los Angeles Rams and a healthy Matthew Stafford are looking for another ring, the Arizona Cardinals think they have it figured out, and the Seattle Seahawks have a new coach. The 49ers are not shoo-ins for the playoffs this year and the Mitchell injury compounds that.</p><p>The expectation among fans and pundits is still that the 49ers will be in the running for the Super Bowl. With Deebo Samuel and Christian McCaffery in the fold, they will still have one of the best weapons groups in the league. Given their history of developing young skill position players, one of those four young running backs could become a great player.</p><p>The Mitchell injury has compounded the need to get Brandon Aiyuk back on the roster. The 49ers receiver has held out all summer and has not given in at all on his contract demands. There were rumors that he would be<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl-rumors-steelers-brandon-aiyuk-contract-offer-is-close-to-what-49ers-have-on-table"> traded to the Patriots and Steelers</a> throughout training camp. Those deals were not made. Sure, San Francisco is dealing with the contract hold-outs and hold-ins of Trent Williams and Brandon Aiyuk, the introduction of Nick Sorenson as Defensive Coordinator, and the pressure of yet another season in which the Super Bowl <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/49ers-all-pro-fred-warner-makes-super-bowl-guarantee">is the one and only goal</a>, but it’s going to take an injury update to Christian McCaffrey for 49ers fans to stop thinking about playing into January and February.</p><p>Christian McCaffrey was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/49ers-news-christian-mccaffrey-drops-massive-preseason-injury-update">ruled out for the entirety of the preseason</a> earlier this week as he continues to work his way back from a minor calf strain. McCaffrey eased the concerns of Niners fans, noting that if it were the regular season he’d be healthy enough to play, but the 49ers are wise to be cautious with the NFL’s reigning Offensive Player of the Year, especially with the status of Brandon Aiyuk <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/49ers-news-brandon-aiyuk-proving-not-about-money-nfl-insider">still up in the air</a>. It doesn’t help matters that half of the 49ers current running back room also won’t be seeing the field on Saturday night.</p><p>“Christian McCaffrey, Elijah Mitchell and Isaac Guerendo <a href="https://x.com/MaioccoNBCS/status/1822346934037643299" rel="noopener">will not play tonight</a>,” says Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area. “And I’m not sure the 49ers will want Jordan Mason to see a lot of action. So undrafted rookie Cody Schrader (All-SEC at Missouri) figures to get a lot of touches.”</p><p>Elijah Mitchell and Isaac Guerendo will both be sidelined with hamstring strains. Jordan Mason, a 3rd-year back who has 83 carries for 464 yards in his two seasons with the 49ers, has been surging as of late during 49ers training camp. It’s been Mason’s ascent, along with the offseason additions of a pair of rookies in Guerendo and Schrader, that has given fans reason to speculate that the 49ers could soon <a href="https://ninerswire.usatoday.com/2024/08/07/espn-suggests-49ers-trade-veteran-rb-to-cowboys/" rel="noopener">consider looking to trade</a> the injury-prone Mitchell, who rushed for 963 yards in 11 games as a rookie in 2021, but only 560 yards in 16 games since then.</p><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Christian-McCaffrey-breaking-away-from-the-defense-1024x574.jpg"><figcaption>© Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><h2><b>49ers in search of insurance behind Christian McCaffrey </b></h2><p>The 49ers reliance on Christian McCaffrey is only a problem if McCaffrey is forced out of action for a prolonged period of time. During his years with the Carolina Panthers, this was the case, a big reason why the Panthers were ultimately forced to trade McCaffrey. But after being limited to just ten games during the 2020 and 2021 seasons, McCaffrey has since not missed a game due to injury. The 49ers do however have a number of intriguing players backing up their bell-cow back.</p><p>Elijah Mitchell once looked like he was on track to become the bell-cow in San Francisco after the former 6th Round pick finished second among rookies in rushing yards during the 2021 season. It was his inability to stay healthy during the 2022 season which prompted San Francisco to eventually pull the trigger on a deal for Christian McCaffrey.</p><p>Jordan Mason is the unofficial betting favorite to get the lion’s share of the work behind McCaffrey, who Kyle Shanahan noted will be <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/49ers-news-kyle-shanahan-hints-at-smaller-christian-mccaffrey-workload-in-2024-season">seeing a slightly diminished workload</a> in 2024. After earning his way onto the 49ers 53-man roster ahead of the 2022 season, Mason has since remained a steady secondary presence in San Francisco’s backfield rotations. Don’t be surprised if the 3rd year back notches career highs in rushes and yards this season.</p><p>The pair of rookies may be the primary reason for 49ers fans to tune in to preseason action. Guerendo won’t be playing against on Saturday night against the Tennessee Titans, but the big bodied back out of Louisville who shined at the NFL Scouting Combine will get plenty of opportunities to come away from training camp with the primary back-up job. Cody Schrader ended up going undrafted back in April, despite rushing for an SEC-high 1,627 yards at Missouri last season, earning All-American honors for his efforts.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Although head coach Kyle Shanahan was surely content with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/49ers-news-christian-mccaffrey-time-of-his-life-playing-san-francisco" rel="noopener">McCaffrey’s success</a>, he <a href="https://twitter.com/LombardiHimself/status/1703821018970857581" rel="noopener">wasn’t thrilled</a> with the McCaffrey-Elijah Mitchell rotation approach, per David Lombardi of The Athletic.</p><p>“Kyle Shanahan says the 49ers have to do a better job with their RB rotation — Elijah Mitchell didn’t see any carries, and Shanahan said that was NOT the plan. 23 touches for Christian McCaffrey,” Lombardi reported.</p><h2><b>49ers’ running back rotation</b></h2><p>Three 49ers players recorded rushing yards against the Rams. McCaffrey of course led the charge, while Deebo Samuel added 38 and Brock Purdy had five rushing yards. When Purdy is out-rushing a reliable running back like Mitchell, that’s when a red flag is destined to go up. Shanahan and the 49ers want Mitchell to receive reps out of the backfield during games.</p><p>Mitchell likely isn’t happy about the situation. He doesn’t have a problem with McCaffrey though, even <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/49ers-news-christian-mccaffrey-elijah-mitchell-share-backfield" rel="noopener">expressing his excitement</a> to work alongside the running back prior to the season. But Mitchell is a good running back who must be featured on a more consistent basis.</p><p>Overall, San Francisco has performed well in 2023. Many people around the NFL world believe the 49ers have what it takes to win the Super Bowl. Keeping McCaffrey healthy is another factor that goes into the rotation conversation. They acquired a player in his same position and clearly value what he brings to the gridiron. He appeared in just five games last season and 11 as a rookie. And the latest <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/49ers-news-san-francisco-elijah-mitchell-injury-training-camp" rel="noopener">Elijah Mitchell injury</a> update makes it sound like the running back, who will be a key piece of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/49ers-news-kyle-shanahan-louis-riddick-held-accountable-trey-lance-debacle" rel="noopener">head coach Kyle Shanahan</a>’s offense this upcoming 49ers season, should be ready to roll by then.</p><p>The latest Elijah Mitchell <a href="https://twitter.com/mattbarrows/status/1696255887118409921" rel="noopener">injury update</a> from The Athletic’s Matt Barrows is that the running back is back and finally at practice after missing over three weeks with an abductor strain.</p><p>That injury update makes it sound as though Mitchell is on track to play in the 49ers Week 1 opener of the 2023 season, which is great news for the team. Mitchell is a third-year back expected to not only be Christian McCaffrey’s primary backup, but possibly even play alongside him in some of Shanahan’s more creative formations.</p><p>As a rookie in 2021, Mitchell had 207 carries for 963 yards and 19 catches for 137 yards with six total touchdowns. Last season, the former Louisiana Ragin’ Cajun missed seven games early in the season with an MCL sprain, then played in three games before tearing his ACL and missing five more games. He did return for Week 17 and the 49ers’ first two playoff games but was inactive in the NFL Championship game vs. the Philadelphia Eagles.</p><p>Despite being limited to just parts of five regular season games, Mitchell still managed 286 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns.</p><p>Coming off a season racked by injuries, Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers will surely want to ease Mitchell back into action to keep him healthy for Week 1 and beyond this season.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

However, their running back room is also drawing some attention now that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/49ers-news-san-francisco-elijah-mitchell-injury-training-camp" rel="noopener">Elijah Mitchell is out</a> with an adductor injury, and it looks like a familiar face has returned to the fold in Jeremy McNichols.</p><p>Christian McCaffrey is obviously leading the way in San Fran’s backfield, but with Mitchell out, the Niners are thin on depth if something were to happen to McCaffrey too. McNichols, who spent time with San Fran back in 2017, was most recently with the Tennessee Titans for the 2020 and 2021 seasons as Derrick Henry’s backup and has now landed a <a href="https://www.49ers.com/news/49ers-sign-rb-jeremy-mcnichols-waive-awatt" rel="noopener">one-year deal</a> to return to San Francisco with Mitchell on the sideline for the time being.</p><p>“The San Francisco 49ers announced they have signed RB Jeremy McNichols to a one-year deal. In order to make room on the roster, the team waived RB Ronald Awatt.” – 49ers.com</p><p>After missing the entire 2022 campaign, McNichols will be looking to stick around on the Niners with Mitchell’s timetable for a return being fairly murky. McNichols’ 2021 campaign was the best of his career (41 CAR, 156 YDS, 28 REC, 240 YDS, 1 TD), and he could be a nice change of pace back behind McCaffrey while Mitchell is out.</p><p>McNichols may have a bit of a difficult time cracking San Francisco’s initial 53-man roster, but his familiarity with the 49ers system could help him stick around. Mitchell’s injury status is certainly worth keeping an eye on, but if he’s out for an extended period of time, it will be interesting to see if McNichols can make the most of his opportunity with the 49ers here.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

His absence means the Niners might have to over-rely on Christian McCaffrey in the backfield. That’s something they don’t want to do. As such, they need to find a new player to step in soon. Luckily, some NFL free-agent running backs could help out. In this article, we’ll look at four of these options: Dalvin Cook, Kareem Hunt, Ezekiel Elliott, and Darrell Henderson. We’ll give you a quick introduction to each player and discuss why they could be a good choice for the 49ers.</p><h2><b>What Happened in the 2022 Season</b></h2><p>The San Francisco 49ers had a good year in the 2022 NFL season. <a href="https://www.espn.ph/nfl/table/_/season/2022" rel="noopener">They won 13 regular games</a>, but things got tough when their first-to-third-string quarterbacks got hurt. We don’t know how bad it is yet, but it’s clear that the 49ers need someone to take his place. Ezekiel Elliott</b></h2><p>Ezekiel Elliott has made it to the Pro Bowl three times, and in 2016, he was one of the best players in the whole league. He’s good at running with the ball and breaking through defenders. He can also catch passes really well. Lately, he’s had some problems with staying healthy and playing well all the time. However, he’s still a good player who could help the 49ers. Dalvin Cook</b></h2><p>Dalvin Cook is really good at being a running back. He’s been picked for the Pro Bowl four times, and in 2022, he was one of the very best running backs in the league. Cook is a flexible player who can run with the ball and catch it, too. He’s also good at stopping defenders from getting to his quarterback, and that’s important for the 49ers’ playing style. It would be awesome if Cook joined the 49ers. That said, it’s probably not going to happen given the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl-rumors-reason-why-dalvin-cook-isnt-rushing-sign-jets-dolphins-interest" rel="noopener">kind of contract he’s looking for</a>.</p><h2><b>3. Kareem Hunt</b></h2><p>Kareem Hunt has made it to the Pro Bowl, too. He’s been a helpful player for the Chiefs and Browns in the past. Like Cook, Hunt can run and catch, and he’s good at blocking as well. Right now, he just left Cleveland and is looking for a new home. He could be the perfect backup to CMC. However, we’re not sure <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kareem-hunt-intriguing-free-agent-destinations-nfl-training-camps-underway" rel="noopener">if he’s at all interested</a> to play second and potentially third-string once more.</p><h2><b>4. Darrell Henderson</b></h2><p>Darrell Henderson is a young player who’s done well in the few years he’s been in the NFL. Recall that helped the Rams win Super Bowl LVI. He can also run and catch, just like the other guys we’ve talked about. Henderson also excels at blocking, which the 49ers need. Unlike the other players on this list, though, Henderson has never put up more than 700 rushing yards in a season. He has also never been named to a Pro Bowl. On the flip side, that means he might come at a more team-friendly deal compared to the others.</p><h2><b>What’s Coming Up</b></h2><p>The 49ers’ 2023 NFL season is a bit uncertain because of Elijah Mitchell’s injury. He’s had problems with injuries before, and whether he can stay healthy is going to be really important for the team’s success. There’s also a big question about who will be the starting quarterback. Trey Lance, Brock Purdy, and Sam Darnold are going to compete for that job, and the 49ers want to figure it out before the season starts. They also have some tough games ahead. With Mitchell expected to be sidelined another week, the 49ers <a href="https://twitter.com/FieldYates/status/1688651183441817600">worked out</a> free agents Duke Johnson, Jeremy McNichols, Brian Hill and Jason Huntley on Monday, per Field Yates of ESPN.</p><p>All-Pro Christian McCaffrey is the undisputed starter in San Francisco, but Mitchell, 25, had been the team’s lead back during his rookie year in 2021 and even played an important role after the trade for McCaffrey this past season.</p><p>Even if Mitchell didn’t get banged up at <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/niners-news-brock-purdy-playing-preseason-opener-vs-raiders">49ers training camp</a>, it still makes sense for the team to seek added depth at the running back position.</p><p>For all McCaffrey’s talents- he’s the best two-way threat at the position- he has missed extended periods of time in two seasons of his career.</p><p>Meanwhile, Mitchell, who powered his way to a 963-yard rushing season two years ago, has missed time in each of his first two seasons with a slew of injuries.</p><p>In Duke Johnson, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/49ers-news-brandon-aiyuks-response-to-kyle-shanahan-saying-deebo-samuel-fastest-wr-team">the 49ers</a> are eyeing a veteran running back who excels as a pass-catcher out of the backfield.</p><p>The likes of McNichols and Hill each have experience as key backups for teams on depth charts in the past, while the 25-year-old Huntley represents a sort of upside halfback.</p><p>There’s no guarantee that any of these veterans will put pen to paper for the 49ers. That could potentially open up more snaps for Christian McCaffrey and Deebo Samuel out of the backfield. Additionally, the 49ers added Tevin Coleman to the active roster from the practice squad, who could also see some opportunities throughout the game.</p><p>Injuries have plagued Mitchell all season long. He was placed on IR on two separate occasions throughout the year, only managing to feature in five games during the regular season. During that span, Mitchell rushed 45 times for 279 yards and two touchdowns.</p><p>During the playoffs, Mitchell has 23 carries for 53 yards alongside two receptions for 25 yards and a receiving TD. He recorded 14 carries during the Divisional Round win over the Dallas Cowboys. That leaves plenty of rushing attempts for his fellow backfield members to make up for.</p><p>There had been rumblings that Elijah Mitchell was going to play in a limited role on Sunday, alluded to as much by Adam Schefter on a <a href="https://twitter.com/49ers_Access/status/1619741321593499648?s=20&amp;t=qdc6i_0IKXqtMlaE1cNehg" rel="noopener">pre-game TV appearance</a>, however, it looks as if the groin injury will prevent him from suiting up.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

With running back <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/49ers-news-christian-mccaffrey-deebo-samuel-elijah-mitchell-injury-updates-for-nfc-championship-vs-eagles" rel="noopener">Elijah Mitchell</a> questionable to play with a groin injury and star halfback Christian McCaffrey nursing a calf injury, the 49ers <a href="https://twitter.com/mikegarafolo/status/1619447031512317952?s=12&amp;t=ASWa4KlRPj0r-G3GQl2Gtg" rel="noopener">promoted</a> running back Tevin Coleman to the active roster from the practice squad, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.</p><p>The 49ers also promoted cornerback Janoris “Jackrabbit” Jenkins to the active roster, as fellow defensive back Ambry Thomas is listed as questionable with an ankle injury.</p><p>Of course, most 49ers fans will be concerned with the Mitchell injury, which held him out of practice all week.</p><p>Head coach Kyle Shanahan had expressed optimism that Mitchell would be out there for the NFC Championship Game, though it certainly looks like he’s on the wrong side of the questionable tag.</p><p>Mitchell is the 1B to McCaffrey’s 1A, though the 49ers leaned on the former in their Divisional Round victory over the Dallas Cowboys to the tune of 14 carries for 51 rushing yards.</p><p>The 49ers are likely to lean on the running game in the NFC Championship Game against the Eagles, who had some struggles defending the ground game this season.</p><p>With McCaffrey dealing with the calf injury, someone is going to get a decent workload behind him- and that someone could be Tevin Coleman.</p><p>Coleman, 29, played under Shanahan with the Atlanta Falcons in his first two years in the league, then reunited with the 49ers coach in 2019 and 2020.</p><p>Coleman has enjoyed success in the postseason too, as he rumbled for over 100 yards and two scores in a Divisional Round victory over the Minnesota Vikings back in 2020.</p><p>The 49ers might need some more of that Coleman magic on Sunday if Mitchell is out.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
