However, the franchise has just two playoff appearances and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/vikings-news-minnesota-fires-dc-ed-donatell-amid-putrid-wild-card-performance-vs-giants" rel="noopener">one playoff win</a> to show for it. Now the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/vikings-make-final-crucial-dalvin-cook-decision" rel="noopener">team is in transition</a>, with longtime stars like Dalvin Cook, Adam Thielen, and Eric Kendricks no longer on the roster. And as the Vikings work to make over the team on the fly, it’s only a matter of time until quarterback Kirk Cousins is out, too.</p><h2><b>Will QB Kirk Cousins the next longtime Vikings player to go?</b></h2><p>The Vikings had an excellent record in 2022, going 13-4 and winning the NFC North. However, the record doesn’t tell the whole tale.</p><p>Despite the gaudy win total, Minnesota won 11 one-score games, including two in overtime, one on a 61-yard, last-second field goal, and one after pulling off the largest comeback (33 points vs. the Indianapolis Colts in Week 15) in NFL history.</p><p>That’s not exactly a dominant performance from Kirk Cousins and company. But that’s kind of what Vikings fans have come to expect from this team in the last half-decade.</p><p>At the end of the 2017 season, before Cousins arrived, the Vikings pulled off the “Minneapolis Miracle” to win the franchise’s first playoff game since 2009. Then the team missed the playoffs, made the playoffs, and then missed the playoffs twice more with Cousins, ultimately costing coach Mike Zimmer his job.</p><p>In that time, though, the club only posted one losing (7-9) season. The Vikings roster has constantly been good enough to compete and win games but not good enough to be true contenders.</p><p>And due to that, new general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and head coach Kevin O’Connell are slowly making over the team.</p><p>This offseason, the Vikings cut or declined to re-sign a handful of tenured Vikings veterans on both sides of the ball. The list includes wide receiver Adam Thielen, linebacker Eric Kendricks cornerback Patrick Peterson, defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson, and on June 8, running back Dalvin Cook.</p><p>These releases leave only a few veteran Vikings on the roster from back in the Mike Zimmer days. Quarterback Kirk Cousins, defensive end Danielle Hunter, and safety Harrison Smith are the main holdovers left from those teams.</p><p>So, is Cousins the next Viking elder out the door?</p><p>The answer — for now — is probably no.</p><p>Cousins is in the last year of his deal, making <a href="https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/minnesota-vikings/kirk-cousins-9915/" rel="noopener">$20.2 million this season</a>. For an NFL starting quarterback, that is basically peanuts, which is one thing keeping him safe. Plus, from a money perspective, his dead cap number is $48.75 million, which means it costs a lot less this season to keep him than to get rid of him.</p><p>Aside from the money, there are also roster reasons that Cousins will likely be on the team for the entire season, unlike Dalvin Cook, Adam Thielen, and Eric Kendricks.</p><p>There isn’t any young QB on the roster right now who can come in, start, and guarantee that the Vikings at least compete in the (weak) NFC North this season. His backups are Nick Mullens — who is a high-end backup but not a legit starter — and a fifth-round rookie out of BYU, Jaren Hall.</p><p>Hall is an old rookie at 25 but does have some potential. However, it’s unlikely he’ll be ready to start early in 2023.</p><p>And competing and winning games in 2023 is important for the Vikings. That’s because the team has a franchise player to build around in Justin Jefferson, and they need to at least stay competitive to keep him happy.</p><p>Jefferson is set to become the highest-paid WR in NFL history, but as of June 2023, no extension has come yet. And while setting up Jefferson for success in the long term likely means parting ways with Cousins after this season, the only way the team can win double-digit games this season is with Cousins at the helm.</p><p>In the end, answering the question posed at the top here is easy, but also slightly nuanced.</p><p>Will Kirk Cousins and the Vikings split up before this time next year? Yes. Will he be the next Vikings veteran out the door? No.</p><p>That honor will likely go to Danielle Hunter, who immediately became the subject of trade rumors as soon as the team released Dalvin Cook.</p><p>After that, it will be Cousins when his contract runs out at the conclusion of next season, quickly followed by Harrison Smith, who the team will cut (saving around $11 million) next offseason. And that will complete this Vikings refresh and get them ready for the next era.</p><p>The only problem here is Minnesota fans should be careful what they wish for. While Cousins isn’t Tom Brady, he’s also better than about half the QBs in the league, and that’s not always an easy thing to replace.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

While the financials of the deal have yet to be revealed, Kendricks contract with the Chargers <a href="https://twitter.com/RapSheet/status/1635441052478849024" rel="noopener">was confirmed</a> by Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.</p><p>Eric Kendricks has spent his entire eight-year career with the Vikings, appearing in 117 total games. Kendricks has racked up 919 tackles – 54 for a loss – 15 passes defended, 15 sacks and nine interceptions. Back in 2019, Kendricks was named a Pro Bowler and All-Pro for the first time in his career. The linebacker made 110 tackles, defended 12 passes and forced two fumbles.</p><p>While he made 137 tackles this past season, Kendricks is coming off of a bit of a down year. He received just a 61.1 <a href="https://www.pff.com/nfl/players/eric-kendricks/9478" rel="noopener">overall grade</a> from Pro Football Focus. As Minnesota looked to gain some extra cap space, they decided to release their long-time linebacker.</p><p>The Chargers will now benefit from the release. For all his struggles, Eric Kendricks was still a monster against the run last year, earning a superb 81.1 run defense grade from PFF. Los Angeles could certainly use some help in that regard. Their run defense ranked just 28th in the NFL, allowing 145.8 yards per game.</p><p>Kendricks may now be 31-years-old, but he is still a valuable veteran defender. The 31-year-old linebacker is now set to join an already loaded group of players in free agency.</p><p>Kendricks, who was a second-round selection in the 2015 NFL draft, spent the first eight seasons of his career in Minnesota. During this time, he developed into one of the most all-around linebackers in the NFL. He consistently made an impact against both the run and the pass, often making big plays for the Vikings defense.</p><p>Over his eight NFL seasons, Kendricks has been named both a Pro Bowler and an All-Pro. He has also taken the field for a total of 117 regular season games. During his time in Minnesota, he was a staple of the defense, starting a total of 113 games.</p><p>Since 2015, few other linebackers have played at a level similar to Kendricks. In total, he has <a href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/K/KendEr00.htm" rel="noopener">recorded</a> 579 solo tackles, 919 total tackles, 54 tackles for loss, 15 total sacks, 51 batted passes, and nine interceptions. Kendricks has reached triple-digit tackles in all but one season throughout his career. This lone occurrence came during his rookie campaign when he recorded 92 total tackles.</p><p>Over the past two seasons, Eric Kendricks has proven that he can still perform at a high level. Through his last 32 regular season games, he has recorded 280 total tackles, 16 tackles for loss, and six sacks.</p><p>With several notable free agents expected to hit free agency, there could be openings around the NFL. For a player such as Kendricks, who can still be a key contributor on defense, could have his pick of landing spots. But some teams could very well be a better landing spot than others.</p><p>Here are two potential landing spots for free agent linebacker Eric Kendricks</p><h2>Los Angeles Rams</h2><p>The Los Angeles Rams are a team that finds themselves in a strange position. Just one season removed from winning a Super Bowl, this roster has undergone massive changes. Many players from that Super Bowl team have moved on, or could be on the move before the start of the 2023 season.</p><p>The Rams struggled heavily in 2022, finishing the season with a 5-12 record. If they hope to return to form next season, they could look to bring in proven talent to join this already-established roster.</p><p>Last season, the Rams looked to address the linebacker position by bringing in <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rams-news-los-angeles-set-to-make-big-leonard-floyd-decision-after-releasing-bobby-wagner" rel="noopener">Bobby Wagner</a>. The likely Hall of Fame linebacker played well in his lone season with the team. While taking the field in all 17 games, he recorded 140 total tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and six total sacks. He also added five defended passes and two interceptions.</p><p>Even with a strong outing in 2022, the Rams and Wagner elected to go their separate ways. Now in his absence, the team must find a way to address the position. Adding Eric Kendricks could be exactly what they look to do.</p><p>Kendricks could step directly into the role left by Wagner. While it is unclear what will happen with superstar cornerback Jalen Ramsey, the Rams defense is still headlined by a generational talent in Aaron Donald. If the Rams are looking to put an elite group around him, adding Kendricks is the type of move they must make.</p><p>The current state of the Rams middle linebacker group lacks proven talent. Ernest Jones showed legitimate upside in his rookie season, racking up 114 total tackles, but there is no veteran among the group. The addition of Eric Kendricks would give the Rams a proven and established playmaker at the position.</p><h2>Buffalo Bills</h2><p>The Buffalo Bills have assembled a defense full of elite talent. But at the center of their success has been a young linebacker in Tremaine Edmunds. In just five seasons, Edmunds has proven to be one of the game’s most elite linebackers.</p><p>Over 74 regular season games, Edmunds has developed into a force. In total, he has recorded 565 total tackles, 32 tackles for loss, 6.5 total sacks, 35 defended passes and five interceptions. But now the Bills are set to move on from Edmunds. With the young linebacker headed toward free agency, he will likely find a new home in the coming weeks. In turn, the Bills could have a major need at the linebacker position.</p><p>The Bills could look to address the position through the draft, but free agency could also be an option. If this is the route that they choose, adding Eric Kendricks could be their safest option. With his elite talent in coverage, alongside his influence against the run, he could help the defense once again be competitive in 2023.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The Vikings’ 2021 season was a letdown, with Minnesota missing out on the playoffs after finishing 8-9. While the team will begin searching for a new head coach, players are still adjusting to the change set to take place, and one player in particular is looking forward to a shift in culture. In fact, Kendricks described Zimmer as implementing a fear-based culture within the organization, something the linebacker is glad to see exit alongside the 65-year-old.</p><blockquote>“No matter what your role is on the staff, you having a voice and being able to communicate things you think could facilitate wins. I think just having that voice, no matter how big your role is—it’s important to listen up and take each other’s opinions into account. I don’t think a fear-based organization is the way to go.”</blockquote><p>Kendricks was drafted by the Vikings in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft, Zimmer’s second year in charge of the Vikings. Over the past seven years, Kendricks has clearly grown less fond of the culture that has developed under Zimmer’s watch. The veteran linebacker has seen the Vikings’ highs and lows during the Zimmer era, culminating in back-to-back losing seasons and the head coach’s subsequent firing.</p><p>Across eight years with the Vikings, Zimmer logged a 72-56-1 record through 129 games. He made the playoffs in three seasons, posting a 2-3 record in the postseason. The Vikings’ best season in the Zimmer era came in 2017 when Case Keenum led the team on a remarkable run to the NFC Championship.</p><p>Now that his tenure with the team has come to an end, it’s interesting to hear players express their genuine opinions on both Zimmer and the culture he built in Minnesota.
