He <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lions-news-hendon-hooker-fantastic-injury-update-acl-rehab">suffered a torn ACL injury</a> in 2022 when he was still with the Vols and spent his first year in the pros sidelined and receiving from the said lower-body issue.</p><p>Sudfeld arrived in Detroit in 2022. That year, he saw action for a couple of games. Sudfeld missed the entire 2023 season with an injury, and he’ll now have to look for work somewhere else, assuming that the Lions don’t bring him back as a practice player.</p><p>With the Lions parting ways with Sudfeld, it seems that they are confident not just in Hooker’s on-field abilities but in his health as well. Hooker is an intriguing asset for Detroit, given the fact that he’s yet to play in a non-preseason NFL game. One thing he has is a ceiling. The Lions also signed him to a four-year contract worth $5.71 million in 2023.</p><p>During the 2024 NFL preseason, the 26-year-old Hooker gathered a total of 300 passing yards and a touchdown with an interception on 29-for-44 completions.</p><p>The Lions ended the franchise’s lengthy playoff drought in 2023 on the strength of their high-powered, Goff-led attack. Detroit averaged 27.4 points and 394.0 total yards per game — fifth and second overall in the NFL, respectively. Goff will continue to orchestrate Detroit’s offense on the field, with Hooker acting as insurance. We got our first extended look at this competition last night when the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl-news-giants-lions-heated-scuffle-during-joint-practice">Lions played the Giants</a> in their first preseason game of the season. Hendon Hooker seemed to jump out into the lead in the battle, but there’s a catch.</p><p>Hooker had to wait until the second half to play, but he quickly made a positive impression. He revived a lifeless Lions offense and got the ball moving down the field. Hooker went 5-of-9 for 36 yards passing and added four rushes for 34 yards as well. I know he got his bell rung, so that’s what that was. Obviously, we would have loved to have gotten more time with him, but that’s one of those things that happens. One of his runs there he must have gotten it.”</p><p>It is possible he injured himself on the above scrambling play.</p><p>This puts the Lions in a tough position, but Hooker looks good enough to win the job in a preseason battle. However, we don’t know when he will return from injury.</p><p>Perhaps the Lions will recognize that Hooker does have the potential to be QB2, but will also look to add an insurance policy to the QB room if Hooker is expected to miss extended time.</p><h2><b>Recapping yesterday’s Lions vs. Giants preseason game</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Detroit-Lions-quarterback-Hendon-Hooker-2-looks.jpg"><figcaption>© Kevin R. Wexler / NorthJersey.com / USA TODAY NETWORK</figcaption></figure><p>The Detroit Lions <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lions-giants-how-to-watch-preseason-game-tv-stream-date-time">lost to the New York Giants 14-3</a> in last night’s preseason game.</p><p>The game was decided in the first half, with no points scored in the second half. Detroit had control of the game in the first quarter, scoring a field goal and playing stout defense. They even forced a turnover. However, the offense was not functioning with Nate Sudfeld under center.</p><p>New York scored two touchdowns in the second quarter, <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/boxscore/_/gameId/401673457" rel="noopener">both of which were touchdowns by RB Eric Gray</a>. His most impressive play was a 48-yard scamper that ended up being the deciding score in the contest.</p><p>The Lions played several rookies including Terrion Arnold, Ennis Rakestraw Jr., Sione Vaki, and Giovanni Manu.</p><p>Arnold and Rakestraw Jr. look good at cornerback next to Amik Robertson in the first quarter. Vaki made some nice plays at running back, including a pair of nice runs that gave the offense some life. Manu filled in for the injured Connor Galvin and appeared to play well.</p><p>We can’t wait to see the Lions in their next preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

They lost to the New York Giants and could not even get to the end zone for the whole duration of the game. Understandably, they did not field their starting offense just yet but bad news still struck. Hendon Hooker, despite the limited minutes he played, went down with an injury.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lions-news-jameson-williams-hendon-hooker-get-eye-catching-takes-ben-johnson">Hendon Hooker has been confirmed</a> to have suffered a concussion during the Giants vs. Lions NFL Preseason clash. Dan Campbell was the one <a href="https://x.com/ttwentyman/status/1821735207440953575" rel="noopener">who relayed the news</a>, per Tim Twentyman of Twentyman in the Huddle. He went down in the second series and had to be rushed into the medical tent. Eventually, the Lions coaching and medical staff made the tough choice of sending him back to the locker room for further evaluation.</p><p>There is no certainty of a return <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lions-news-hendon-hooker-strong-message-major-step-closer-return">timetable for the Lions quarterback’s injury.</a> All hopes are high that he could be able to play in the other NFL Preseason games aside from this Giants clash or just be present to add depth in their season opener. This is also not the first time that the Lions faithful had to hold their breath because of Hooker. By the tail-end of the 2023 season, he was still recovering from an ACL injury. A lot of those were the runs, so he made it happen with his legs. But to the point, where we were at, we didn’t convert on the fourth down there but it was good to get him in there. We were excited for the next series and then we found out what happened. It was good,” the Lions’ head honcho said.</p><p>Hooker finished with five completions on nine attempts for 36 passing yards. Moreover, he was also very effective in the rushing game because his four carries got the Lions an average yardage of 8.5 per attempt. However, Coach Campbell just told him to be wary of how he runs with the ball.</p><p>“That’s what happens when you run, in this league, at the quarterback position. He was moving the football, I thought he was making some solid decisions before that. A lot of those were the runs.
