In what is considered to be a “freak injury” as Pelissero put it in his post on his social media page, it could be considered a forgettable season for Brown, but he would say the opposite as he took to X after the Super Bowl loss <a href="https://x.com/Primetime_jet/status/1888814035203764621" rel="noopener">to share his appreciation.</a></p><p>“Proud of the guys, season I’ll never forget, don’t know what the future holds but Thank you Jesus for the opportunity we had tonight…Back To Work,” Brown said.</p><p>At 27 years old, Kasnas City is the third team in his NFL journey as he started with the Baltimore Ravens where the Florida-native was the 25th overall pick in the 2019 draft. Rebilas-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>2024 was an unfortunate year for Marquise Brown throughout his time with the Kansas City Chiefs.</p><p>Joining the Chiefs after two seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, he seeked a solid role in the receiving corps. However, he <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/chiefs-news-marquise-brown-hospitalized-after-painful-injury-jaguars">suffered a sternoclavicular injury during the preseason</a> and was placed on injured reserve for most of the season.</p><p>He returned for the last two games of the regular season, making nine catches for 91 yards. In the playoffs, he made three receptions for 35 yards.</p><p>It’s far from the performances Brown knows he is more than capable of providing for the Chiefs when healthy. He was a key target in 2021 with the Baltimore Ravens, making 91 catches for his lone season of 1,000 or more receiving yards. Brown is set to hit free agency this offseason and heading to the Buffalo Bills could be on the table for him. Josh Allen has reportedly wanted to play with Brown.</p><p>ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/insider/story/_/id/43736371/super-bowl-2025-latest-nfl-buzz-news-rumors-free-agency-trades-draft" rel="noopener">elaborated on the situation</a> in his recent notebook.</p><p>“The Chiefs very much want to keep receiver Hollywood Brown, who should have a good market due to teams’ desire for speed options on the outside,” Fowler wrote. “Mahomes advocated for signing Brown last year and will likely do so again. Will another star quarterback — like Josh Allen — be next? People with the Chiefs I spoke to this week believe that Allen has long wanted to play with Brown.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bills-news-josh-allens-mvp-first-21-years">Allen, who was just named MVP,</a> could benefit from playing alongside Brown. At the same time, any wide receiver could benefit from playing with a quarterback such as Allen, who has a proven ability to be one of the league’s best year in and year out.</p><p>Patrick Mahomes would likely hate to see Brown go as well, meaning the Chiefs will likely try their hardest to keep him in Kansas City.</p><h2><b>Why was Josh Allen’s MVP win </b>surprising?</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/unnamed-2_e92f46.jpg"><figcaption>Kirby Lee-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>When Josh Allen was named the NFL’s MVP, many were caught off-guard by the decision. Even Allen <a href="https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-mvp-controversy-why-josh-allens-award-win-over-lamar-jackson-at-nfl-honors-was-so-surprising/" rel="noopener">was surprised by the result</a>.</p><p>“I was pretty surprised, given what we know about how the voting goes,” Allen said via CBS Sports. “Lamar was very deserving of this as well.”</p><p>Lindsay Jones of The Ringer elaborated on her decision to split her vote between Allen and Lamar Jackson.</p><p>“Splitting my ballot was my way of acknowledging that Jackson played quarterback better than anyone this season, while Allen was the defining, and yes, most valuable, football character of the regular season,” Jones wrote.</p><p>Despite not expecting to win it, Allen is <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/bills/2025/02/06/josh-allen-nfl-mvp-award-lamar-jackson-bills-ravens/78315220007/" rel="noopener">grateful for the award and the support</a> from his teammates.</p><p>“It feels good,” Allen said via USA Today. “I feel like my teammates wanted this more for me than I did. For the record, I’m on record saying that calls of the Chiefs demise are premature. I even went as far as suggesting that the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/why-chiefs-could-actually-run-the-table-go-undefeated-2024">Chiefs’ ability to win these sorts of games over and over again strengthens their three-peat chances.</a></p><p>With that being said, what’s happened to the Chiefs offense over the course of the last couple of seasons <i>does </i>feel problematic. Right now, Kansas City is outside of the top ten in both points per game and yards per game. Suffice to say, this is the first time in the Patrick Mahomes-era that this has been the case. We can point fingers at Mahomes’ sloppy play, Travis Kelce’s age, or Matt Nagy’s overall incompetence for this trend, but let’s not forget that the Chiefs offense has been ravaged by injuries this season.</p><p>Leading receiver Rashee Rice was sidelined for the remainder of the season after a Week 4 knee injury. Two weeks prior, starting running back Isaiah Pacheco was sent to the injured reserve after suffering a fracture fibula. And then there’s Marquise Brown, who was placed on the IR before he even had a chance to step on the field for a Chiefs regular season game.</p><p>Fortunately, the man who has come to be known as “Hollywood” appears to be <a href="https://x.com/AlbertBreer/status/1867597981433708638" rel="noopener">gearing up for a return</a> that may propel the Chiefs toward their own Hollywood ending.</p><p>Per NFL on Prime insider Albert Breer:</p><p>“The Chiefs are opening WR Hollywood Brown’s practice window today, per source. Hope has been he’d return this week or next, so he’s right on time. First step in getting him back into game action.”</p><p>With the losses of Brown — who was looking for a bounce back season in Kansas City after career low production in 2023 — Rice and Pacheco, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/chiefs-news-kansas-city-finalizing-deandre-hopkins-trade">the Chiefs traded for DeAndre Hopkins</a> to account for that missing production, and thus far, the 12-year veteran has been able to provide Patrick Mahomes with a reliable target. In just seven games, DeAndre Hopkins has caught 30 of the 45 targets that have come his way for 357 yards and four touchdowns.</p><p>The Chiefs are currently two games in the loss column ahead of both Buffalo and Pittsburgh, though the Bills <i>do </i>have the tiebreaker over Kansas City. Three of KC’s final four games of the season are on the road — against Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Denver — with a Week 16 matchup with the Texans serving as their regular season home finale.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

They still have a few games remaining in the regular season, however, and there is a chance that Marquise Brown, or Hollywood Brown as some know him, <a href="https://x.com/RapSheet/status/1867358486574559570" rel="noopener">may return before the regular season comes to an end</a>, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.</p><p>“Sources: #Chiefs WR Hollywood Brown has received final clearance to practice, paving the way for him to play before the regular season ends. Brown, who is recovering from surgery to repair his SC joint, should have his window opened Friday or Monday. The team will be cautious,” Rapoport wrote on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/chiefs-news-marquise-brown-closing-in-return-field-kansas-city">Brown has been trending in a promising direction</a> over the past couple of weeks. Barring a setback, it seems as if a return before the season’s conclusion is a possibility. If Brown can play in a game or two in the regular season, he could be prepared to help the Chiefs in the playoffs.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/afc-playoff-picture-chargers-week-14-loss-chiefs">Chiefs are the best team in the AFC</a>. Adding a player such as Marquise Brown will only make the Chiefs even stronger, which is surely an intimidating thought for Kansas City’s potential playoff opponents.</p><p>Brown has yet to play in a game with the Chiefs. He spent the first three seasons of his NFL career in Baltimore with the Ravens before playing for the Arizona Cardinals in 2022 and 2023. The 27-year-old is now hoping to make a big impact for a Chiefs team that has won two consecutive championships.</p><p>Kansas City is currently focused on their upcoming matchup against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. The 27-year-old speedster suffered a devastating shoulder injury in the first week of the preseason that has kept him from making his official Chiefs debut.</p><p>While his initial diagnosis had him unlikely to play in the 2024 regular season, Brown is now <a href="https://www.nfl.com/news/chiefs-wr-marquise-brown-shoulder-nearing-return-could-play-by-end-of-regular-season" rel="noopener">scheduled for an appointment</a> in the coming weeks that could clear him to play in either Week 16, 17 or 18, per Ian Rapoport. The NFL insider reported that Brown is “expected back soon” and that it is now “likely” he will return before the end of the regular season.</p><p>Once he is able to return, Brown’s presence would be a welcome sign for an otherwise middling Chiefs’ receiving room. Through 12 weeks, Kansas City is led by Travis Kelce’s 637 receiving yards with rookie Xavier Worthy a distant second with 407. Kelce’s team-leading 75 receptions more than double any other player on the team.</p><p>After winning Super Bowl LVIII in February, the Chiefs signed Brown in the 2024 offseason to form a dynamic outside tandem with budding superstar Rashee Rice. However, Brown’s preseason injury stopped their vision before it could even get started. Along with signing Brown, Brett Veach used his draft capital to select Worthy in the first round, giving them arguably the fastest trio of receivers in the league.</p><p>However, 12 weeks later, the Chiefs are instead deploying a makeshift unit for Patrick Mahomes to lead. Kelce and Worthy are the only original starters that remain in a lineup that now includes Hopkins and JuJu Smith-Schuster. Veterans Justin Watson and Mecole Hardman have had their time on the field as well as the only two healthy pass-catchers providing any depth.</p><p>Along with Rice and Brown, the Chiefs also have receivers Skyy Moore and Jaaron Hayek on injured reserve. Reserve tight ends Jody Fortson and Jared Wiley are also on injured reserve, giving Kansas City six total pass catchers out with long-term injuries.</p><p>The constant revolving door at the position has led to Mahomes’ inconsistent production but has not affected the team’s overall results. Brown injured his shoulder during the Chiefs’ preseason opener and had been recovering from it ever since.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/chiefs-news-kansas-city-patrick-mahomes-find-new-wr1-in-hollywood-brown">Kansas City acquired Brown as another receiving threat</a> for superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes, but fans will have to wait a little longer to see their connection. Mahomes will have to lean on such players as star tight end Travis Kelce, receiver Rashee Rice, and rookie Xavier Worthy.</p><p>Brown had started his career with the Baltimore Ravens where he spent three seasons before playing two years after with the Arizona Cardinals which then led to signing with the Chiefs. Last season, Brown caught 51 passes for 574 yards to go along with four touchdowns.</p><h2><b>Chiefs’ Hollywood Brown “trending in the right direction”</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Marquise-Brown-of-the-Cardinals.jpg"><figcaption>© Joe Rondone/The Republic / USA TODAY NETWORK</figcaption></figure><p>It was already going to be a hard time for Brown to play as combining the recovery with the short week the Chiefs are on since it is a Thursday night game, the expectation came true from Schefter. However, there could be some positivity as Chiefs general manager did say that Brown was “trending in the right direction” last Thursday when speaking to the media.</p><p>“I don’t like talking about medical because if I say something and he’s ahead of that timeline or behind that timeline then I don’t want to put any more pressure on the kid,” Veach said, via transcript from the team. “I probably can confidently say it was similar to Tyreek, and I think given that timeline I think it falls within the timeline that Tyreek went through, but I know he’s here every day. He’s to the point now where he can laugh without pain, so that’s a good thing.”</p><p>“He’s certainly trending in the right direction,” Veach continued Thursday. “And look, there was a reason why we didn’t put him on the IR to start the season.”</p><h2><b>Patrick Mahomes talks impact on losing Hollywood Brown</b></h2><p>As mentioned before, Brown’s involvement with the Chiefs was a plan to help Mahomes as the wide receiver play last season was filled with disappointment except for Rice. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/chiefs-news-patrick-mahomes-reveals-mindset-hollywood-brown-injury">Mahomes spoke about the injury to Brown</a> and said that while the team has to do without him, it is rough since he had a “good understanding of what I want.”</p><p>“I guess we’re lucky that it wasn’t as bad as it could have been,” Mahomes said earlier this month. “We lose a little bit of that veteran-type receiver in that room. We have other guys that can replace him a little bit, but to have that much talent, hopefully we’re getting him back sooner rather than later.”</p><p>“We’ve just got to keep pushing those young [receivers] to keep getting…better every day,” Mahomes continued.</p><p>At any rate, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/ravens-vs-chiefs-how-to-watch-nfl-kickoff-game">the Chiefs opens the season Thursday night against the Ravens</a> who they beat the AFC Championship game last season as no doubt they are looking for revenge. Brown did reunite with Murray with the Cardinals as well. Still, he is a talented receiver, and it shows how much talent was on that 2018 Oklahoma football roster.</p><h2><b>A lot has changed for Oklahoma football since CeeDee Lamb’s playing days</b></h2><p>Back in 2018, Oklahoma had Lamb, Murray and Brown on offense, and was in the second season of Lincoln Riley’s tenure as head coach after Bob Stoops’ retirement. Now, Brent Venables is the head coach after Lincoln Riley’s move to USC a few years ago. However, that is not the biggest difference.</p><p>Oklahoma is gearing up for its first season in the SEC, leaving the Big 12 conference that the program was in for so long. It will be interesting to see how the Sooners fare. Watson has received many of the reps Brown would be getting if he were on the field, via Adam Teicher of ESPN.</p><p>Brown is scheduled to miss four to six weeks after dislocating a joint in his shoulder. He won’t require surgery, but the speedster is in danger of missing Week 1. While the rest of the preseason could shake things up, Watson seems most likely to start next to Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy should Brown be forced to miss regular season playing time.</p><p>After beginning his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Watson has spent the last two seasons in Kansas City. With the Buccaneers winning the Super Bowl in 2021 and the Chiefs going back-to-back, Watson has earned three straight championship rings. Perhaps his Super Bowl pedigree has given him a boost up the depth chart.</p><p>His 2023 campaign saw Watson catch 27 passes for 460 yards and three touchdowns; all career-highs. He tied for the second-most receptions on the team amongst wide receivers while his yardage and touchdown catches put him behind just Rice.</p><p>Over his entire six year NFL career, Justin Watson has caught 65 passes for 1,033 yards and seven touchdowns. He would have a major opportunity to improve those numbers should he earn a starting role heading into Week 1.</p><h2><b>Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs need wide receiver help</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Justin-Watson.jpg"><figcaption>Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>While the Chiefs have the future Hall of Famer Travis Kelce, Kansas City needed more playmaking ability on the outside. That was the whole reason they signed Brown. But at least early in the year, they’ll be forced to look elsewhere.</p><p>One immediate option will be first-round pick Xavier Worthy. After breaking the NFL combine record in the 40-yard dash, Worthy is ready to bring his jets to the Chiefs. He was a force during his three years at Texas, catching 197 passes for 2,755 yards and 26 touchdowns.</p><p>Watson and Worthy will be joined by Rice, who developed into the de facto leader in the wide receiver room in 2023. He led all Kansas City receivers with 79 catches for 938 yards and seven touchdowns. He will once again be looked at as one of Patrick Mahomes’ most trustworthy targets.</p><p>With two years of experience under his belt now, Justin Watson is looking to join him. When Marquise Brown does return, Watson will likely be relegated to the bench. Brown will likely face an extended absence, and his availability for Week One is in question.</p><p>The team will need somebody else to step up in the wake of Brown’s injury, but they’ve had trouble finding a no. 1 wide receiver <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/dolphins-tyreek-hill-breaks-down-why-hes-better-than-patrick-mahomes">since Tyreek Hill left town</a>. Luckily, the Chiefs have a young and talented insurance policy in Xavier Worthy, the team’s first-round selection in the 2024 NFL Draft.</p><h2><b>Xavier Worthy is one of the fastest players in the league</b></h2><p>Worthy posted the <a href="https://www.chiefs.com/video/xavier-worthy-s-record-breaking-4-21-second-40-yard-dash-at-the-2024-nfl-combine" rel="noopener">fastest 40-yard dash time</a> in NFL history at the 2024 NFL Combine and his speed shows up on tape too. He’s not one of those players who is only able to run fast in shorts and a T-shirt, but he can demonstrate his speed on game film. His college highlight reel is full of plays where he simply blew past his defender and ran wide-open down the field for an easy touchdown. It’s not just the highlights with Worthy, though. His speed was a noticeable factor that clearly impacted how defenders schemed against the Texas Longhorns’ offense.</p><p>Even on running plays, the defense was often so preoccupied with Worthy that his primary defender wouldn’t even be involved in stopping the run at all because he would react to Worthy’s decoy right off the line of scrimmage.</p><p>When a player has the speed that Worthy does, all the traditional rules fly out the window. His primary defender is no longer looking at the offensive line to determine whether the play is a run or a pass. That defender is solely focused on one task and one task only: not getting burned for a touchdown.</p><p>Worthy often doesn’t even need to block, as his speed makes him more valuable as a decoy running a fake deep route down the field.</p><h2><b>Rashee Rice may be facing a suspension</b></h2><p>Wide receiver Rashee Rice broke out in a big way last season, giving Mahomes his first bona fide top receiver since Hill left town to join Tua Tagovailoa in South Beach.</p><p>There’s little doubt that Rice’s emergence coincided with the Chiefs offense looking to be in their best form since Hill left, and the team won a Super Bowl as a result. Rice would be the obvious candidate to step up in Brown’s absence, and in terms of talent alone, an argument could even be made that he is already the team’s No. 1 receiver.</p><p>However, Rice has had a turbulent offseason. The young receiver was arrested and charged with eight felonies in relation to a multi-car crash on a busy Dallas highway. Rice was also a suspect in an assault at a Dallas nightclub, although the alleged victim declined to press charges.</p><p>The NFL can still punish Rice, though, and he’ll almost certainly face league discipline for his role in the crash. To make matters even worse for the team, Rice’s suspension could coincide with the postseason. This means the Chiefs will need a backup plan.</p><h2><b>The Chiefs need to take pressure off Travis Kelce</b></h2><p>Travis Kelce is a superstar tight end who is one of the three best players in the position. Yet, the Chiefs should do everything in their power to prevent a situation where they find themselves relying primarily on Kelce.</p><p>First, as dynamic as Kelce is, it’s difficult for a tight end to make a consistent and meaningful impact on the game. It’s also easier to double-team a tight end from the snap because of the way they line up on the field.</p><p>A defense faces immense stress lining up two players over an outside receiver on the boundary, and most double teams on outside receivers come from a cornerback with safety help over the top. However, it’s much easier to line up two defenders over a tight end when they are in the slot or next to the offensive tackle.</p><p>Most routes that tight ends run don’t have as much potential to take the top off the defense, which somewhat limits their ability to create explosive plays and score from 30 or more yards out.</p><h2><b>Patrick Mahomes works best with a deep threat</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Chiefs-quarterback-room.jpeg"><figcaption>Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Mahomes is one of the best quarterbacks of his generation, and he’s able to excel with any group of pass-catchers around him. However, there’s one type of player that he works best with. When Mahomes has a speedy deep threat who can take the top off of a defense with ease, that’s when he is at his best. Mahomes is a quarterback who thrives using his improvisation skills, arm strength, and ability to throw from a variety of unorthodox arm slots. This allows him to create and convert opportunities that other quarterbacks might not even see or consider.</p><p>Having a receiver who can get behind the defense on any play, opens up more space on the field for Mahomes to work with, and puts more stress on the defense. When the defense is stressed, they are more likely to have a breakdown in coverage that gives Mahomes an opportunity he can exploit.</p><p>The most obvious example of Mahomes’ success with this receiver archetype is Tyreek Hill. Although the Chiefs have enjoyed sustained success with several iterations of their past catching core, there’s little doubt that Mahomes thrived while throwing passes to Hill.</p><h2><b>With Brown out due to injury, Worthy has a chance to step up</b></h2><p>The Chiefs are going to need another player to step up in Brown’s absence. Worthy is a talented young player who fits exactly what Mahomes likes to do offensively. The Chiefs have provided a timeline for Brown’s recovery a few days later.</p><p>Brown is expected <a href="https://x.com/Schultz_Report/status/1823433326713299195" rel="noopener">to miss four to six weeks</a> with the sternoclavicular injury he suffered, per NFL Insider Jordan Schultz. Opening night is nearly three weeks away. Hopefully, Brown will have a safe and efficient recovery process.</p><p>Head coach Andy Reid compared Marquise Brown’s injury to Tyreek Hill’s shoulder ailment from 2019. Thankfully, Hill was able to recover eventually, and Brown looks to do the same.</p><p>Brown is in his first year with the Chiefs after stints with the Baltimore Ravens and Arizona Cardinals, as ClutchPoints previously noted. He started his career with the Ravens in 2019 after the team selected him with the 25th overall pick in the draft. After two years of stout production, Brown experienced an offensive eruption.</p><p>The former Oklahoma Sooner amassed a career-high 1,008 yards along with six touchdowns during the 2021 season. The following season, Brown joined the Cardinals, where his production fell slightly; however, he played a career-low 12 games in 2022.
