Isaac Guerendo, however, provided a promising update.</p><p>The alternate running back <a href="https://x.com/nwagoner/status/1872380391446987090" rel="noopener">appears to be on his way back</a>, per 49ers reporter Nick Wagoner of ESPN Thursday. Guerendo became a limited participant in practice. Safety Ji’Ayir Brown (ankle) also joined the RB on the limited list.</p><p>Guerendo has been dealing with a foot/hamstring ailment. He hasn’t seen action since the Dec. 12 meeting against the Los Angeles Rams.</p><p>Guerendo carried the football 16 times but netted only 57 yards in that 12-6 loss to their NFC West rival. Guerendo has handled 73 carries for 381 yards and scored four times this season.</p><p>The 49ers are currently 6-9 and officially eliminated from the 2024 postseason race with two games left. That includes the NFC title game rematch against the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football for Week 17.</p><h2><b>Could the 49ers’ future include Isaac Guerendo? </b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Isaac-Guerendo-scoring-a-TD.jpg"><figcaption>Bob Kupbens-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The 49ers now have to address a big-picture vision for 2025 in the future.</p><p>San Francisco already had to operate with a limited Christian McCaffrey this season. The 49ers’ RB1 played in just four games this year for S.F. McCaffrey settled for only 50 carries for 202 rushing yards and scored zero touchdowns — including off receptions.</p><p>McCaffrey signed a two-year, $38 million extension in June 2024. But he’s facing Father Time as he’ll turn 29 next June. General manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan will need to think about an eventual long-term replacement for McCaffrey.</p><p>Guerendo could become an early contender over Jordan Mason. The 25-year-old Mason heads to the ’25 offseason <a href="https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/player/_/id/77308/jordan-mason" rel="noopener">as a restricted free agent</a>. Mason briefly handled starting running back duties in McCaffrey’s absence. He compiled 153 carries for 789 yards and scored three times. But Mason hasn’t been seen since the Dec. 1 road loss to the Buffalo Bills — as he left with a high ankle sprain.</p><p>Guerendo rises to the second RB option behind McCaffrey if Mason walks via free agency this offseason. The fourth-round draft selection signed a four-year rookie contract worth more than $4.7 million. The former Louisville RB, though, could convince the 49ers he’s their RB future in 2026 if McCaffrey isn’t resigned.</p><p>Meanwhile, the 49ers’ upcoming opponent, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lions-news-dan-campbell-unveils-lions-plan-with-starters-in-potential-meaningless-game-vs-49ers">Lions, have no plan to rest their starters</a> inside Levi Stadium. Heading into their Week 16 matchup against the Miami Dolphins, that fact remains true.</p><p>Both left tackle Trent Williams and running back Isaac Guerendo <a href="https://x.com/CamInman/status/1870215513957380457" rel="noopener">have been ruled out</a>, via Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group. Williams is dealing with an ankle injury while Guerendo is battling a hamstring ailment.</p><p>Guerendo picked up his injury in Week 15 against the Los Angeles Rams. While he played through a foot injury, his hamstring became a new problem. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/49ers-news-isaac-guerendo-unlikely-to-play-week-16-vs-dolphins">Widely expected early in the week</a>, Guerendo’s Week 16 fate has now been sealed.</p><p>If the 49ers had the season they were expecting, there’s a chance Guerendo wouldn’t have seen the field. He got his call once Christian McCaffrey and Jordan Mason went down with injury. Still, the running back has made the most of it, gaining 381 yards and four touchdowns on 73 carries. San Francisco will be calling on Patrick Taylor with Guerendo down, but it’ll be difficult to truly replace the rookie’s 5.2 yards per carry.</p><p>Williams hasn’t played since Week 11. With the 49ers out of playoff contention and dropping like flies, it’s fair to wonder if the talented left tackle will return before the end of the season. Head coach <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/49ers-news-kyle-shanahan-admits-san-francisco-shut-trent-williams-down-season">Kyle Shanahan has already expressed the sentiment</a>. While it would hurt their protection for the remainder of the season, it might also ensure Williams’ health for 2025.</p><p>Even in just 10 games, the left tackle put up another vintage performance. He <a href="https://www.pff.com/nfl/players/trent-williams/5529#gradesWidget" rel="noopener">earned a stellar 85.6 grade</a> from Pro Football Focus, ranking seventh out of 132 tackles. Williams left no doubt that when healthy, he remains one of the best offensive lineman in the league.</p><p>The keywords there being, when healthy. With how bad things have gotten, it’s hard to truly fault the 49ers for falling out of contention. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfc-playoff-picture-after-rams-take-control-of-nfc-west-in-week-15">49ers have practically no chance of making the playoffs in the NFC</a>, which would be a first since the 2020 season. To make matters worse, they may be without another running back in Week 16.</p><p>49ers running back Isaac Guerendo is <a href="https://x.com/AdamSchefter/status/1869791157879984192" rel="noopener">unlikely to play</a> against the Dolphins on Sunday, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Guerendo is dealing with a hamstring injury, which is expected to keep him off the field this week.</p><p>The 49ers have had some awful injury luck at the running back position this season. San Fran has already lost Christian McCaffrey, Jordan Mason, and Elijah Mitchell to season-ending injuries.</p><p>The 49ers rank towards the top of the NFL in many rushing statistics. Unfortunately, it does not seem like that will hold in Week 16.</p><p>San Francisco finishes the season with three games against Miami, Detroit, and Arizona. Then it will be on to what should be an eventful offseason.</p><h2><b>49ers legend Steve Young honest take on Brock Purdy contract dilemma</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Brock-Purdy-escapes-sack-vs-Buccaneers.jpg"><figcaption>© Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Brock Purdy may be the most fascinating part of the offseason for San Francisco.</p><p>The young quarterback is almost through his rookie contract and is due a huge payday. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl-rumors-49ers-firmly-committed-brock-purdy-contract-extension">Purdy’s market value has boomed up to $50 or $60 million per season</a>.</p><p>49ers legend<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/49ers-news-steve-young-honest-brock-purdy-dilemma-contract"> Steve Young spoke honestly about the dilemma</a> his former team is in right now with Purdy.</p><p>“Out of the huddle, that’s his superpower, call a play, run it, and then matriculate down the field and then throw it into the end zone, or run it into the end zone,” Young said Wednesday on The Dan Patrick Show. “So in many ways in the game today, you’d say I want to make sure I have plenty of help for Brock Purdy, plenty of help for Jared Goff, plenty of help for Kirk Cousins, and I need money to do that.”</p><p>When pressed on whether the 49ers should extend Purdy, Young explained more about the dilemma.</p><p>“Look, I think that Dak Prescott, the Cowboys are going to suffer for a long time because they paid him a number that now in many ways takes from the ability to go build teams to go help you for the very thing that you need,” Young continued. “So that’s the dilemma because everyone loves Brock, loves his game, and loves his efficiency and leadership and everything else, but we got to make sure we have the money to put the people with him to go win it.”</p><p>It will be interesting to see how the 49ers approach the upcoming offseason.
