Isaac Guerendo, however, provided a promising update.</p><p>The alternate running back <a href="https://x.com/nwagoner/status/1872380391446987090" rel="noopener">appears to be on his way back</a>, per 49ers reporter Nick Wagoner of ESPN Thursday. Guerendo became a limited participant in practice. Safety Ji’Ayir Brown (ankle) also joined the RB on the limited list.</p><p>Guerendo has been dealing with a foot/hamstring ailment. He hasn’t seen action since the Dec. 12 meeting against the Los Angeles Rams.</p><p>Guerendo carried the football 16 times but netted only 57 yards in that 12-6 loss to their NFC West rival. Guerendo has handled 73 carries for 381 yards and scored four times this season.</p><p>The 49ers are currently 6-9 and officially eliminated from the 2024 postseason race with two games left. That includes the NFC title game rematch against the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football for Week 17.</p><h2><b>Could the 49ers’ future include Isaac Guerendo? </b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Isaac-Guerendo-scoring-a-TD.jpg"><figcaption>Bob Kupbens-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The 49ers now have to address a big-picture vision for 2025 in the future.</p><p>San Francisco already had to operate with a limited Christian McCaffrey this season. The 49ers’ RB1 played in just four games this year for S.F. McCaffrey settled for only 50 carries for 202 rushing yards and scored zero touchdowns — including off receptions.</p><p>McCaffrey signed a two-year, $38 million extension in June 2024. But he’s facing Father Time as he’ll turn 29 next June. General manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan will need to think about an eventual long-term replacement for McCaffrey.</p><p>Guerendo could become an early contender over Jordan Mason. The 25-year-old Mason heads to the ’25 offseason <a href="https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/player/_/id/77308/jordan-mason" rel="noopener">as a restricted free agent</a>. Mason briefly handled starting running back duties in McCaffrey’s absence. He compiled 153 carries for 789 yards and scored three times. But Mason hasn’t been seen since the Dec. 1 road loss to the Buffalo Bills — as he left with a high ankle sprain.</p><p>Guerendo rises to the second RB option behind McCaffrey if Mason walks via free agency this offseason. The fourth-round draft selection signed a four-year rookie contract worth more than $4.7 million. The former Louisville RB, though, could convince the 49ers he’s their RB future in 2026 if McCaffrey isn’t resigned.</p><p>Meanwhile, the 49ers’ upcoming opponent, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lions-news-dan-campbell-unveils-lions-plan-with-starters-in-potential-meaningless-game-vs-49ers">Lions, have no plan to rest their starters</a> inside Levi Stadium. Heading into their Week 16 matchup against the Miami Dolphins, that fact remains true.</p><p>Both left tackle Trent Williams and running back Isaac Guerendo <a href="https://x.com/CamInman/status/1870215513957380457" rel="noopener">have been ruled out</a>, via Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group. Williams is dealing with an ankle injury while Guerendo is battling a hamstring ailment.</p><p>Guerendo picked up his injury in Week 15 against the Los Angeles Rams. While he played through a foot injury, his hamstring became a new problem. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/49ers-news-isaac-guerendo-unlikely-to-play-week-16-vs-dolphins">Widely expected early in the week</a>, Guerendo’s Week 16 fate has now been sealed.</p><p>If the 49ers had the season they were expecting, there’s a chance Guerendo wouldn’t have seen the field. He got his call once Christian McCaffrey and Jordan Mason went down with injury. Still, the running back has made the most of it, gaining 381 yards and four touchdowns on 73 carries. San Francisco will be calling on Patrick Taylor with Guerendo down, but it’ll be difficult to truly replace the rookie’s 5.2 yards per carry.</p><p>Williams hasn’t played since Week 11. With the 49ers out of playoff contention and dropping like flies, it’s fair to wonder if the talented left tackle will return before the end of the season. Head coach <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/49ers-news-kyle-shanahan-admits-san-francisco-shut-trent-williams-down-season">Kyle Shanahan has already expressed the sentiment</a>. While it would hurt their protection for the remainder of the season, it might also ensure Williams’ health for 2025.</p><p>Even in just 10 games, the left tackle put up another vintage performance. He <a href="https://www.pff.com/nfl/players/trent-williams/5529#gradesWidget" rel="noopener">earned a stellar 85.6 grade</a> from Pro Football Focus, ranking seventh out of 132 tackles. Williams left no doubt that when healthy, he remains one of the best offensive lineman in the league.</p><p>The keywords there being, when healthy. With how bad things have gotten, it’s hard to truly fault the 49ers for falling out of contention. He studied journalism and communication at UConn.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NFL</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>San Francisco 49ers running back Isaac Guerendo reportedly left Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears <a href="https://x.com/AdamSchefter/status/1865909419558449442" rel="noopener">with a foot injury</a> and is questionable to return, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/49ers-star-brandon-aiyuk-takes-hilarious-shot-at-brock-purdy-after-arizona-state-iowa-state">The 49ers had</a> a big lead at the time that Guerendo left the game against the Bears, so it is not a surprise that he did not return to the game, even if he was healthy enough to do so. Before he left, he had 15 carries for 78 yards and two touchdowns.</p><p>The rookie Guerendo had filled in <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/49ers-news-rich-eisen-brock-purdy-caleb-williams-debate">as the 49ers’</a> starting running back after the injuries to Christian McCaffrey and Jordan Mason. He had big shoes to fill, but he had done a good job before leaving the game with the foot injury.</p><p>Guerendo still ended up as the 49ers’ leading rusher with 78 yards, while Patrick Taylor had 25 yards and a touchdown as well. Deebo Samuel chipped in 13 yards while Brock Purdy had 11 rushing yards as well. If Guerendo’s injury causes him to miss time moving forward, Taylor will likely take the bulk of the snaps, with Ke’Shawn Vaughn and Israel Abanikanda as options as well. It would be interesting to see if Samuel is used more out of the backfield in the coming weeks, even though he is not used as heavily in that role as he was earlier in his career.</p><h2><b>49ers look to make miracle run to playoffs</b></h2><p>After the win against the Bears, the 49ers got back to 6-7 overall this season. San Francisco has struggled with injuries and overall consistency this season. Some close losses loom large, but the team still has the talent to make a run down the stretch and get into the playoffs.</p><p>To close the season, the 49ers will play the Los Angeles Rams, Miami Dolphins, Detroit Lions and Arizona Cardinals to close the season. There are definitely tough matchups and the 49ers will likely need to win out, but they definitely have the talent to do so.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Well, you've come to the right place.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">San Francisco 49ers</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>When <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/49ers-news-christian-mccaffrey-not-only-rb-on-ir" rel="noopener">Christian McCaffrey landed on IR</a> with a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/49ers-news-christian-mccaffrey-breaks-silence-after-season-ending-injury">potentially season-ending PCL injury</a>, it instantly turned Isaac Guerendo into one of the most important players on the San Francisco 49ers’ roster.</p><p>Beginning the year as RB2 behind Jordan Mason, who also landed on IR, the round 4 pick out of Louisville turned in some good tape as a speedy change-of-pace back, <a href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/G/GuerIs00.htm" rel="noopener">including a 99-yard game</a> against the Seattle Seahawks, but was never supposed to be more than that when the team was fully healthy.</p><p>Fortunately for Guerendo – and unfortunately for the 49ers – that is no longer the case, as the rookie is expected to earn his first-ever start in Week 14 against the Chicago Bears.</p><p>A tough task? You bet, but in the opinion of the running game coordinator, Chris Foerster, Guerendo is up for the task, as the 49ers have made it his mission to get ready for <a href="https://49ers.1rmg.com/transcripts/run-game-coordinator-offensive-line-chris-foerster-press-conference-12-5-24/" rel="noopener">when his number gets called</a>.</p><p>“Oh, he is more than ready. That’s been the good thing. Not having to jump in right away. You guys heard that, I liked him from the beginning. The kid had that burst, that quickness and he’s been able to be eased into it, not easing right now. So you still have to be careful, he hasn’t played a full load in an NFL game up to this point,” Foerster told reporters.</p><p>“Now is he going to be able carry the load for all four quarters like [RB] Christian [McCaffrey] has done in the past or not? I don’t know that we’ll have to see as we go. And the other guys, 32’s [RB Patrick Taylor Jr.] been here for a good while. 31’s done a good job. Obviously, we’re excited for Isaac, and we’ll see how it plays out. But it’s definitely going to be a challenge for us and challenge for him because he’s going to have to tote the mail for us, and he’s going to have to do a lot of things over a longer period of time than he’s done it up to this point.”</p><p>With just 42 carries to his credit as a pro, Guerendo is a relative unknown heading into Week 14. Speed is nice. If you can get it, it’s important. Being a good back and having a good feel for the running game, hitting the right lanes, doing things like that. He set all sorts of records in Washington with [Former RB] Alfred Morris and Alfred we all know is not a speed demon. So there’s that balance between a good runner that understands it. It took [Miami Dolphins RB] Raheem [Mostert] a while to get going in this offense before the speed really showed up. It is nice to have that home run threat. It is nice, as you saw, when Isaac has broken some runs – the end of the Dallas game, the end of the Seattle game, where all of a sudden we talked about it, we called it the ‘angle assassin.’ You think that you’re on the right angle, but with that speed you’re able to get that burst and get further and more yards than most people would. So, it is nice to have speed.”</p><p>Can Guerendo turn in more big plays out of the backfield like his efforts in Seattle? Potentially so, and if he can do that consistently enough, who knows, maybe he could become the next Mostert and force Shanahan to play two backs when CMC gets healthy in the future.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
