Now, they’re hoping for that connection to carry over through the rest of the season and for much longer.</p><p>The Patriots rookie quarterback hit the rookie wide receiver with a 2-yard touchdown pass with just under two minutes remaining in the first half, with Maye tossing the ball to an open Polk in the flat after a play-action. While the pass was Maye’s eighth total touchdown in five starts, it was just the second touchdown Polk’s had this season. However, Maye has confidence in his fellow rookie moving forward.</p><p>“That was pretty cool. First-round pick, a second-round pick, and I think JP is finding it,” Maye told reporters. “I think there’s sometimes where I think I may have had him some other times in the game. I think he’s going to be a great player and looking forward to hoping that touchdown gives him some confidence, and he’s going to make a lot of plays for us.”</p><p>Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo offered a sentiment similar to Maye’s about Polk. After giving Polk some constructive criticism during his struggles, Mayo’s hoping that Sunday’s touchdown grab can be a turning point for the rookie.</p><p>“It was great. With young players, you never know where that inflection point is going to come,” Mayo said. “You never know when that switch is going to flip. Hopefully, this is the start of him being a very good receiver in this league. We never doubted him in the locker room, and I think that’s important. There’s been a lot of outside noise, and he’s had to deal with the outside noise, but when it’s all said and done, if you go out and do it on the field, there’s not much people can say.”</p><h2><b>What Patriots rookie WR Ja’Lynn Polk said about his touchdown grab in win vs. Bears</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/JaLynn-Polk.jpg"><figcaption>David Banks-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>As Polk’s quarterback and head coach offered him individual praise, the rookie put the team first when he was asked about his touchdown grab on Sunday.</p><p>“It means a lot to get the touchdown but I think it’s more important, and feels a lot better, knowing we played as a team and fought through adversity, and had belief in one another to go get a win,” Polk said.</p><p>Polk, who the Patriots selected in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, was viewed as a good match with Maye due to his ability to make tough catches. But he had a few drops over his first two games with Maye before missing a game due to a concussion and only received one target in the loss to the Tennessee Titans last week.</p><p>As the season progresses, though, Maye and Polk seem to be getting more acclimated with each other. Maye led an offensive meeting ahead of Sunday’s game. Polk <a href="https://x.com/MikeReiss/status/1855740843543458011" rel="noopener">appreciated his quarterback’s leadership</a>.</p><p>“Everybody loved it, man,” Polk said of Maye being vocal. “We need that. We need that from our starting quarterback. You’re a leader on this team. Don’t be afraid to take that next step of just being vocal. … For him to be able to do that, it tells you a lot about him and the leadership he has.”</p><p>Maye and Polk will hope to be a bit more productive moving forward. While rookie quarterback Drake Maye had another solid day under center despite the loss, the same could not be said for <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/patriots-news-jerod-mayo-scathing-jalynn-polk-review">fellow rookie Ja’Lynn Polk</a>, whose nightmarish start to his NFL career continued in this one.</p><p>Polk has struggled to turn his targets into catches so far, and that continued in this one, as he had no catches despite drawing three targets in the game. Beyond that, he may be set to miss some time with a head injury that he picked up late in this game, which only makes matters worse as he tries to get himself out of this funk.</p><p>The Pats have been trying to get Polk going with a trial by fire strategy, but they may not be able to use this strategy anymore. Polk has been struggling quite a bit, and he could benefit from working behind the scenes on his development in an effort to not further sap his confidence, which doesn’t appear to be doing too well as we can see in this post.</p><p>While we don’t know the nature of his injury, there’s a chance Polk could be forced to miss some time anyways, so it will be worth keeping an eye on his status, especially after this post. Not much has gone right for New England this season, and they are going to have to hope Polk can get things figured out as they try to build their offense up around Maye under center.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Mayo discussed the team, critiqued multiple players on a <a href="https://x.com/MikeReiss/status/1845820802622541847" rel="noopener">recent conference call</a> with the media, and had firm words for Polk, per ESPN’s Mike Reiss.</p><p>“He needs to get over this mental hump. You got to eliminate the dropped passes and be better blocking … We fully expect him to grow into a receiver that is dependable on run and pass downs.”</p><p>Despite seeing 10 targets over his last two games, Polk only caught two of them. Guard-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>By starting Drake Maye in Week 6, the Patriots are in an evaluation and developmental mode, as noted by Mayo’s most recent comments about the team’s roster, per <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3xwk292Lfk" rel="noopener">his interview</a> on WEEI.</p><p>“We had a lot of holes on the roster that we felt, coming out of the draft, that we addressed,” Mayo said. “Now, free agency, we still felt like we signed the best offensive lineman in Mike Onwenu, and re-signing some of our players, which was definitely part of it. Once again, this isn’t a one-year thing in my mind. It’s going to take time to continue to build out the roster, and that’s how it is.</p><p>“From a roster standpoint, just in general, especially with our younger players, we had to see what we have this year, no matter what the record is. When we get out of this season, we need to know exactly what we have from a talent standpoint and then fill the holes that we need to fill.”</p><p>Much of the Patriots’ roster is very young. They have the 12th-youngest average-aged roster in the league.
