In his first regular-season game, LaPorta caught all five passes targeted to him, totaling 39 receiving yards. While he may not be a fantasy superstar just yet, he displayed natural receiving skills. Keep in mind that LaPorta also has blocking duties, and he only ran routes on about 70 percent of his snaps. Still, he managed to be the fourth most targeted player behind Amon-Ra St. Brown, Josh Reynolds, and Marvin Jones. If his involvement in the game increases, LaPorta could become a valuable low-end fantasy starter.</p><h2><b>3. Jared Goff: The Solid Quarterback</b></h2><p>Lions QB Jared Goff had a decent game. He completed 22 of 35 pass attempts for 253 yards, throwing one touchdown pass in their win against the Chiefs. He also had no interceptions. While the Lions did pull off an upset against the reigning Super Bowl champions, their offense wasn’t exceptionally strong. They punted the ball five times, which was more than their average last season. They also struggled to get into scoring positions against a Chiefs defense that was missing key players. However, Goff’s statistics were in line with his 2022 averages. In addition, he extended his remarkable streak of consecutive passes without an interception to 359. That actually ranks third all-time behind Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady. Color us impressed.</p><h2><b>4. Amon-Ra St. Brown: A Consistent Performer</b></h2><p>Amon-Ra St. Brown had a good game for the Lions. He caught six of the nine passes thrown to him, accumulating 71 receiving yards and scoring a touchdown against the Chiefs. This performance was consistent with his 2022 numbers, where he averaged 6.6 receptions on 9.1 targets with 72.6 receiving yards per game. Fantasy managers were pleased to see him find the end zone this time, considering he often got tackled near the five-yard line last season. Even though Gibbs and LaPorta could become more involved in short-range passes as the season progresses, St. Brown remains the top receiver in Detroit. We expect him to have another excellent year.</p><h2><b>Looking Ahead</b></h2><p>In Week 1, the Detroit Lions had some noteworthy fantasy football performances. Jahmyr Gibbs and Sam LaPorta, both rookies, showed promise. They should become valuable assets in the future. Jared Goff had a steady game, and Amon-Ra St. Brown continued to impress as the top receiver for the Lions. With David Montgomery, Amon-Ra St. Brown, rookies Sam LaPorta and Jahmyr Gibbs among others, the Lions had plenty of hope for a big statistical night on offense.</p><p>The Lions’ coveted offensive coordinator Ben Johnson had intriguing <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lions-news-oc-jahmyr-gibbs-comments-raise-fantasy-football-players-eyebrows" rel="noopener">comments on his young weapon</a> Gibbs heading into the big game. The reason <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl-rumors-lions-jahmyr-gibbs-david-montgomery" rel="noopener">why the Lions picked Gibbs</a> despite already having David Montgomery in the fold also was revealed.</p><p>Fantasy football owners expected a big outing from Gibbs in Week One vs. the Chiefs on the road. After all, Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell has also routinely praised the promising Alabama Crimson Tide rookie ever since he was picked in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft.</p><p>As of the seven-minute mark of the fourth quarter in Kansas City, the Lions held a 21-20 lead on a David Montgomery touchdown run.</p><p>Gibbs has been noticeably absent for much of the game, however. Gibbs had 6 rushes for 24 yards while Montgomery had 15 for 56 as of that point in the game.</p><p>The frustrating lack of usage and success for Gibbs drew the ire of fantasy players on X during the evening. After narrowly missing the playoffs last season, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lions-predictions-2023-nfl-season" rel="noopener">Lions are favorites to win the NFC North</a> and reach the playoffs for the first time since 2016.</p><p>A big reason why is because of Detroit’s high-powered offense, which finished top-five in yards and points per game in 2022.</p><p>The Lions bring in a brand new offensive backfield this season, headlined by first-round pick Jahmyr Gibbs. Detroit’s selection of Gibbs came as a bit of a surprise to other teams given the Lions’ addition of veteran running back David Montgomery weeks before the draft.</p><p>Montgomery is expected to be the starter, but the Lions have a significant role carved out for Gibbs. <a href="https://www.profootballnetwork.com/nfl-news-rumors-brian-burns-jahmyr-gibbs-caplan-2023/" rel="noopener">Detroit views the latter</a> as a “multipurpose offensive player” according to Adam Caplan.</p><h2>How will the Lions utilize Gibbs?</h2><p>Last season, the Lions had a backfield led by D’Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams. The duo complimented each other well, with Williams being the bruising, goal line back, while Swift served as the primary pass-catcher and change-of-pace guy.</p><p>That seems to be <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lions-news-oc-jahmyr-gibbs-comments-raise-fantasy-football-players-eyebrows" rel="noopener">Detroit’s plan for Gibbs</a> and Montgomery. Gibbs caught 104 passes in three college seasons and ran the second-fastest 40-yard dash time at this year’s combine (4.36 seconds). Montgomery is a solid pass-catcher as well but is likely seen as the primary ball carrier for the Lions’ offense.</p><p>“I think we’ve seen a lot of them and we know what we’re going to expect out of both those guys,” Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson said. “I think they are very — yes, they are complementary backs. What (Montgomery) does well, Gibbs might not do as well and vice versa, but I think they both are very versatile, so we might use Gibbs in some ways that people don’t quite think we might or Montgomery the same way. I’m really excited to see what they can do out on the field here this week, but we’re going to use them all over the place.”</p><p>With Swift and Williams, the Lions had the 11th-best rushing offense in the NFL in 2022. They expect it to improve this year with the versatility that Gibbs and Montgomery bring to the table.</p><p>Regardless of how they are used, both Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery will have <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lions-predictions-week-1-chiefs" rel="noopener">impact roles for the Lions offense</a> this season. This year, fans are even more excited to see what they have planned, particularly for rookie running back Jahmyr Gibbs. Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson only raised the level of curiosity surrounding this football team with <a href="https://twitter.com/ttwentyman/status/1698046745932951979?s=12&amp;t=bm8qRt18zuhlXFzV7rKRAQ" rel="noopener">his latest comments</a>.</p><p> “We might use Gibbs in some ways that people don’t quite think we might,” he said, per Tim Twentyman of Lions.com. While no one can be certain, the mind immediately goes to slot receiver.<br></p><p>The first-round pick, who Detroit traded up for at the 2023 NFL Draft, showcased his <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lions-news-jared-goff-member-join-jahmyr-gibbs-hype-train" rel="noopener">impressive offensive versatility</a> while playing for the Alabama Crimson Tide. He was one of the most efficient runners in the country (rushed for 926 yards and 6.1 yards per carry in 2022), but it was his excellence in the passing game that likely convinced the front office to jump up the draft board in April.</p><p>Gibbs snagged 44 total receptions for 444 yards and three touchdowns last season, while also proving adept at lining up at the slot. NFL running backs are seeing their market value decline, but the best way to buck that trend is to be an effective running-receiving hybrid. The Lions seem to think Gibbs can fit that role for them.</p><p>The question is, when will head coach Dan Campbell and OC Johnson decide to fully unleash him. After an impressive 2022 season fell short of their playoff aspirations, many expect them to take control of the NFC North. They’ve added some new weapons to complement their offense, including rookie running back Jahmyr Gibbs. Amid all the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lions-news-jahmyr-gibbs-twitter-buzzing-after-cooking-giants-lb" rel="noopener">hype around the team</a>, QB Jared Goff <a href="https://www.detroitlions.com/news/goff-feels-lions-are-in-a-good-place-as-they-enter-next-phase-of-camp" rel="noopener">praised the rookie</a>, per Mike Ohara, adding more fuel to the steam train that is Gibbs.</p><p>“He’s pretty good, he’s pretty good in space,” Goff said. “He’s really special. That’s always our goal — to get those guys who are special in space and he’s one of them.”</p><p>The Lions had a hole to fill in their roster after the departure of Jamaal Williams. Williams was one of their most productive players last season, along with D’Andre Swift. With both players finding new homes, the team needed to find a new option in the backfield.</p><p>Everyone agrees that Gibbs is a damn good player, someone that can be productive with the Lions or with any other team. However, the<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jahmyr-gibbs-lions-reach-nfl-draft" rel="noopener"> biggest hang-up</a> that fans and critics had is his draft position. Detroit drafted Gibbs with the 12th pick in the 2023 draft. In this day and age, drafting running backs that high is highly controversial, to say the least. In fact, the Falcons’ earlier pickup of Bijan Robinson was widely slammed, despite the RB’s talent.</p><p>Still, Gibbs and the Lions has a chance to completely change the narrative. If the rookie running back blows away everyone’s expectations, perhaps the criticisms of the pick will fade. While Gibbs has a lot to prove to live up to those names, his skill as both a versatile rusher and pass-catcher have allowed him to garner such lofty comparisons.</p><p>Jahmyr Gibbs drew even more attention for his dual-threat abilities after cooking New York Giants linebacker Bobby Okereke in joint practice Tuesday. After a quick move while facing off versus Okereke, Gibbs’ speed stood out as he easily accelerated past the linebacker to catch the pass down the right sideline. Following the winning record and a solid offseason, the Lions are one of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lions-news-2023-hype-train-reaches-ford-field" rel="noopener">most hyped teams</a> ahead of this year. Barry Sanders, often considered one of, if not the greatest running back of all time, has joined in the excitement for Detroit’s upcoming season. In particular, Sanders was impressed with rookie running back Jahmyr Gibbs and his take will only increase the buzz for Detroit.</p><p>“I believe they couldn’t more geeked about Jahmyr Gibbs,” <a href="https://www.nfl.com/news/inside-training-camp-live-buzz-tuesday-august-8?campaign=Twitter_atn" rel="noopener">Sanders said</a>. “being able to get him early in the first round, and what they’ve seen so far and his attitude and his approach to practice.
