While he frequently puts together massive games for the Seahawks, he also goes through phases where he struggles to get much of anything going. That is precisely what ended up happening against the 49ers, as Metcalf hauled in just three passes for 48 yards on the night.</p><p>Yes, he drew a tough matchup against Charvarius Ward, but Metcalf was targeted 11 times on the night. Smith completing 30 of his 52 pass attempts for 312 yards and a touchdown isn’t bad, but he threw a pair of costly interceptions at really poor times for the Seahawks.</p><p>On a night where San Francisco didn’t turn the ball over, Smith’s two turnovers leading to 10 points proved to be incredibly costly for the Seahawks. It’s tough to win games when you lose the turnover battle, and while Smith did a lot of stuff right in this one, he needed to do a better job protecting the football, because it ultimately ended up playing a huge role in their inability to come out on top in this one.</p><h2><b>Julian Love</b></h2><p>Julian Love is a key piece of Seattle’s secondary, but he chose a pretty bad time to turn in his worst outing of the year. A quick glance at his stats doesn’t exactly make his game look bad, as he led the Seahawks in tackles with 10, while also picking up a pass defended along the way. The problem is he was directly responsible for a pair of the 49ers touchdowns.</p><p>Love, who is the Seahawks best tackler, completely whiffed on a tackle of Deebo Samuel, which resulted in him taking off for his 76-yard score. Love was also in coverage on George Kittle for his first score of the game, although it is worth noting that his coverage was generally solid, as Kittle made a terrific catch on a pinpoint pass from Brock Purdy. As a Pro Bowl caliber player, though, Love has to be better for Seattle in these spots, and his bevy of mistakes proved costly for his team on Thursday night.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

This play kick-started the Seahawks, who would score 21 of their 24 points in the second half.</p><p>Seattle desperately needed plays like this from Shenault Jr. because they struggled to move the ball on the ground against the 49ers. In fact, the Seahawks ran the ball 20 times for only 52 yards and a touchdown. That includes 14 carries for 32 years from Kenneth Walker III. That is not good enough to get the job done against the defending NFC champs.</p><p>Seahawks safety Rayshawn Jenkins said that he is not frustrated just yet. He believes that Seattle has enough talent to turn things around.</p><p>“We have the right guys in the room to get the job done. We just really have to be real and accountable,” Jenkins said. “And as long as we do that, we should be OK. He scored three touchdowns against the Rams when George Kittle and Deebo Samuel were out and almost got San Francisco the win. He has not played to that level since and it is time to bench him in this matchup. The Seahawks have a solid secondary and do not pose a good matchup for Jennings.</p><p><b>Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Seattle wide receiver</b></p><p>Another third-receiver who is popular in fantasy football, this is not the matchup for Jaxon Smith-Njigba. He had a big drop in the final moments of Week 5’s loss to the Giants and is not going to be a big part of the offense this week. The 49ers have bottled up wide receivers all season long and with DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett as better options, this is not the spot for the second-year receiver.</p><p><b>Zach Charbonnet, Seattle running back</b></p><p>While Walker is a great option for fantasy football, it might be time to move on from Zach Charbonnet. It was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/seahawks-news-mike-macdonald-week-5-kenneth-walker-usage">fairly surprising to see them lose</a> to the New York Giants in Week 5, though, with the <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/recap/_/gameId/401671680" rel="noopener">final score settling in at 29-20</a>.</p><p>The Seahawks still sit atop the NFC West for the time being, but you can’t help but feel like there are some serious red flags that were raised in this game that could come back to haunt them, especially with a huge <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/49ers-vs-seahawks-how-to-watch-thursday-night-football-on-tv-stream-date-time">Thursday Night Football contest</a> against the San Francisco 49ers looming in Week 6. So with that being said, let’s take a closer look at why the Seahawks are in trouble after their loss to the Giants.</p><h2><b>Seahawks offense has no identity</b></h2><p>Seattle’s offense has a bevy of weapons, but they struggle on a weekly basis to develop a consistent identity. Case in point, a week after he ran for 80 yards and three touchdowns, Kenneth Walker III got just five carries against the Giants porous run defense, which only turned into 19 yards. Stuff like that simply cannot be happening if the Seahawks intend on winning.</p><p>Consistently getting guys like Walker and DK Metcalf involved seems to be a bigger struggle for the Seahawks than it should be, resulting in their offense looking like a completely different unit on a weekly basis. This has been a recurring issue during Geno Smith’s time under center, and while he shoulders some of the blame, the coaching staff needs to do a better job finding ways to get these guys involved. Their inability to do so through five games isn’t exactly a great sign for the unit’s future this season.</p><h2><b>Seahawks defense struggling to consistently limit opponents</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WanDale-Robinson-of-the-Giants-and-Julian-Love-of-the-Seahawks.jpg"><figcaption>Mandatory Credit: Joe Nicholson-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>While the Seahawks have won three games this season, they have received consistently mediocre play from their defense. Sure, they shut down the Tua Tagovailoa-less Miami Dolphins, but they have allowed at least 20 points in every other game. That includes games against the New England Patriots, who have the worst offense in the league, and wishy-washy offensive teams in the Denver Broncos and New York Giants.</p><p>Injuries certainly haven’t helped this team, but they have way too much talent on this side of the ball to be getting carved up like they have through five games. Getting healthy would help, but if Seattle intends on being a playoff-caliber team this season, they are going to need to be better on this side of the ball, although it’s worth noting they have a tough challenge on their hands in Week 6 against the 49ers.</p><h2><b>Seahawks wasted huge opportunity to take stranglehold of NFC West</b></h2><p>The biggest issue the Seahawks currently face is the standings. Yes, the season is only five games old, but if Seattle beat a Giants team that was missing key pieces in Malik Nabers and Devin Singletary, they would be 4-1 and have a two-game lead over the rest of their division. Instead, they are 3-2 and have just a one-game lead over the 49ers, who they conveniently end up playing on Thursday night.</p><p>It may not seem like much now, but that’s a swing that could eventually end up having massive playoff implications. If Seattle loses to San Fran on Thursday night, they would fall down to second place in the division, meaning they would have wasted the Niners slow start to the season. The Seahawks missed a huge opportunity to take a convincing lead atop the NFC West, and given how good San Francisco is, there’s a decent chance they will end up regretting their Week 5 loss to the Giants quite a bit.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Suddenly, the Seahawks went from surrendering an average of 14.3 points per game to 35.5, and the shine of Macdonad’s much-hyped defensive front had started to fade.</p><p>What gives? However, defensive end Nick Bosa isn’t <a href="https://x.com/nwagoner/status/1843784910181675412" rel="noopener">taking their run game for granted either</a>, especially since Kenneth Walker III is back in the mix and had limited touches in last week’s loss to the New York Giants.</p><p>Via Nick Wagoner:</p><p>“They’ve kind of gotten away from the run, but we expect that to change this week… I’m sure they’re not too happy with how the last game went in terms of how many times they gave their top back the ball, so we’re expecting to probably get a heavy dose of that to start.”</p><p>Walker III had only five carries for 19 yards in Week 5. Bosa does make a good point however because the running back is a key piece for this Seahawks offense and it’s only a matter of time until he’s involved more.  I mean, in the season opener, Walker III ran the football 20 times for 103 yards.</p><p>The 49ers run defense is solid, though. They’re allowing just 110.8 rushing yards per contest, which is ninth in the league. Seahawks OC Ken Grubb openly admitted on Tuesday that Walker III must get the ball a lot more, taking full responsibility for his lack of touches.
