Ruiz believes that just because the Saints selected the 25-year-old quarterback in the second round, it doesn’t mean he should <a href="https://www.nfl.com/news/cesar-ruiz-saints-quarterback-competition-fun-shough-rattler-haener" rel="noopener">necessarily start right away</a>.</p><p>“Two different quarterbacks, right? Everybody has their superpower,” Ruiz said about Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler. “Everybody is good at their thing. Spencer has something, and I’m like, hey, he got that. Tyler will come in there, and I’m like, hey… This is just talent. When you see two talented guys just competing, it’s truly fun to see.</p><p>“I know you guys touched on [that] we drafted (Shough) early. We drafted him second round, 40th overall, still super early in the draft. … I think just because we drafted a quarterback super early doesn’t mean you have to push him in there and play. New Orleans was never quite able to get over the hump after losing Drew Brees and Sean Payton. The team played well under previous head coach Dennis Allen, but ownership made it clear that mediocrity is not good enough.</p><p>Moore did not waste much time before putting his stamp on the team. The Saints added multiple players on one-year deals during NFL free agency. New Orleans also made a few long-term commitments, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/saints-bring-back-chase-young-on-shocking-51-million-deal">retaining Chase Young</a> and Juwan Johnson before adding Isaac Yiadom and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/saints-news-major-swing-justin-reid-signing">Justin Reid</a>. All four players signed three-year contracts, which should make them important pieces of Moore’s new-look Saints.</p><p>New Orleans also <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/nfl-stories/2025-nfl-draft-grades-for-all-32-teams">made some big additions in the 2025 NFL Draft</a>. They reinforced the offensive line with Kelvin Banks Jr. and brought in a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/saints-news-new-orleans-drafts-tyler-shough-not-shedeur-sanders-no-40">new starting quarterback in Tyler Shough</a>.</p><p>Kellen Moore still has plenty of work to do retrofitting the roster. But New Orleans got off to a good start this offseason.</p><p>Now that Saints’ coaching staff has had a good look at their new players after rookie minicamp, OTAs, and mandatory minicamp. It is possible that they’ve already changed their evaluations on a few players.</p><p>Could the Saints make a big move before the start of training camp? Or will they consider tweaking the roster around the trade deadline?</p><p>Below we will explore one obvious Saints trade candidate heading into training camp in July.</p><h2><b>Would the Saints part ways with franchise legend Cameron Jordan in a trade?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/unnamed-2_fb986d.jpg"><figcaption>Matthew Hinton-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>It is hard to imagine Cameron Jordan suiting up for any team other than the Saints. But it could happen as early as this season.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/saints-news-new-orleans-cam-jordans-2-year-27-5-million-extension-with-team-for-life">Jordan has been a sensation in New Orleans</a> ever since they drafted him in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft.</p><p>He has been a stud throughout his 14-year career in New Orleans. Jordan has logged double-digits sacks in six of his 14 seasons in the NFL. He consistently pressures the quarterback and holds up fairly well against the run. Simply put, he’s everything a team could ask for out of an edge rusher.</p><p>We would be foolish to ignore the fact that Jordan is a franchise legend for the Saints. They would not part ways with him without a good reason.</p><p>So why might the Saints trade away Cam Jordan? And if they did, when would it happen?</p><p>I view the case for trading Jordan as a three-pronged argument.</p><p>First, his fit into <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/saints-news-kellen-moore-hires-brandon-staley-new-orleans-coordinator">Brandon Staley’s 3-4 defensive scheme</a> is less than ideal. As a 4-3 defensive end, Jordan is left without a home on a 3-4 base defense.</p><p>Jordan would fit best as an edge rusher, but early word is that he could play as a 3-4 defensive end. That is not a perfect fit considering his size. It is also awkward because the Saints already have players like Bryan Bresee who fit that role perfectly.</p><p>Meanwhile, Chase Young and Carl Granderson seem slated to start at outside linebacker on the edges.</p><p>The Saints could certainly find a role for Jordan, but it is tricky.</p><p>Second, Jordan is close to the end of his professional career. Even if Jordan fit into Staley’s new defense, there’s no guarantee that he would return in 2026 at all. That does not give Kellen Moore much motivation to hold onto Jordan for too long, especially when the 2026 season could be a rough retooling year for the team.</p><p>That works nicely into my final point – trading Jordan lets the Saints get something in return for him.</p><p>I see Jordan having a healthy trade market around the NFL trade deadline this fall. That could be an ideal time to trade Jordan to a contending team for some kind of return. Even a late-round pick, or pick swap, could be useful for New Orleans moving forward.</p><p>Jordan can always sign a one-day contract to retire with the Saints. A trade simply might be the best move for the front office.</p><h2><b>Which NFL teams might be interested in trading for Cameron Jordan? </b></h2><p>If the Saints do decide to trade Cam Jordan at the deadline, which NFL teams might be interested in him?</p><p>Thankfully, Jordan only comes with a <a href="https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/player/_/id/7739/cameron-jordan" rel="noopener">$9.78 million cap hit in 2025</a>. That makes it pretty easy for another team to take on his salary, especially halfway through the season.</p><p>The Detroit Lions come to mind as one of the most obvious answers.</p><p>Detroit is desperate to add edge rush talent opposite of Aidan Hutchinson. Even if they end up bringing back Za’Darius Smith.</p><p>The Lions have plenty of cap space to bring on a one-year veteran. Dan Campbell also has an intimate connection with the Saints after his time spent in New Orleans. He could look to scoop up a Saints legend to upgrade the Lions’ defense.</p><p>Another team could be the Vikings.</p><p>Minnesota also runs a 3-4 defense, but I could see them having the luxury of deploying Jordan exclusively as a rotational edge rusher. The only question would be how much they prioritize edge rusher four behind Van Ginkel, Greenard, and Turner.</p><p>Finally, the Saints could trade Jordan to any other contending team if they happen to lose an edge rusher to a season-ending injury.</p><p>At the end of the day, it is extremely unlikely that Jordan would ever be traded. But it could happen under the right circumstances.</p><p>Breathe easy, Saints fans. And they need to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/2-hottest-saints-takes-coming-out-of-2025-minicamp">sort out the quarterback position</a>. Also, a five-time Pro Bowler would be a great fit for the Saints.</p><p>The good news for the Saints is that they have room to maneuver under the salary cap. That’s at least true for the 2025 season. And they need to use that room wisely. The best bet is shoring up <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/45569999/2025-nfl-offseason-final-moves-suggestions-trades-signings-extensions-32-teams#NO" rel="noopener">the cornerback position</a> in the form of Stephon Gilmore, according to espn.com.</p><p>“Right now, their starters at the position are 2024 second-round pick Kool-Aid McKinstry and veteran Isaac Yiadom, who returns to New Orleans after playing in San Francisco last season,” Aaron Schatz wrote. “Gilmore maintained his high level in 2024 with Minnesota, ranking 30th in my coverage DVOA metric while being assigned to some of the league’s toughest receivers. He could challenge Yiadom for a starting job, while serving as an important mentor for McKinstry and fourth-round rookie Quincy Riley.”</p><h2><b>Saints need to add CB Stephon Gilmore</b></h2><p>A 13-year veteran, Gilmore’s best days are behind him. He hasn’t made the Pro Bowl since 2021. However, he still has some juice. And he could likely help a team like the New Orleans Saints and their first-year head coach Kellen Moore.</p><p>Gilmore said he’s not the only quality cornerback <a href="https://x.com/JosinaAnderson/status/1813284141506400678" rel="noopener">still on the market</a>, according to a post on X by Josina Anderson.</p><p><i>“There are still some good corners and safeties out there like Justin Simmons and myself that are still not signed. He said things can <a href="https://www.foxsports.com/articles/nfl/saints-brushing-off-concerns-about-unproven-qbs-in-kellen-moores-first-year-in-charge" rel="noopener">work themselves out</a>, according to foxsports.com.</p><p>Moore pointed to his time in Dallas, when Dak Prescott took over as a rookie in 2016.</p><p>“It’s all about opportunities,” Moore said. “(Prescott) hopped in there and played great. And certainly, there’s a lot of other quarterbacks through the history of this game who’ve done it in a similar fashion. So, we feel like we’ve got some young guys who are ready to roll.”</p><p>Shough said he is focusing on getting better and letting the other things fall into place.</p><p>“A lot of things you can’t control,” Shough said. “But you can control your preparation, your attitude, your effort — and that’s one thing I’m going to do.”</p><p>And Moore said he likes what he’s seen from Shough this far.</p><p>“He’s a really, really prepared quarterback,” Moore said. “He can handle NFL volume. He’s handled the playbook tremendously.”</p><p>As for Rattler, he needs to show more than he did in 2024. The Saints finished with a record of 5-12, and Rattler didn’t make great strides. But he does have a year of experience under his belt. And that could help in the battle with Shough.</p><p>“It helps a lot just with the speed of everything, understanding what you’re going to see week in and week out,” Rattler said. “You can’t put too much pressure on yourself,” Rattler added. “It’s Year 2 — a great opportunity ahead of me.”</p><p>Also trying to get in the mix is Jake Haener, a 2023 fourth-round pick.</p><h2><b>Will the Saints add a quarterback?</b></h2><p>Questions have arisen about whether the Saints would try to add a veteran to stabilize <a href="https://www.nfl.com/news/saints-not-currently-worried-about-adding-veteran-to-young-qb-room" rel="noopener">the young mix</a>. That’s a possibility, according to nfl.com.</p><p>“Certainly there’s times where if the opportunity presents itself, you feel like it’s a really good fit, we’d love to do it,” Moore said. “We feel like we have some good guys here that can certainly mentor each other at the same time going through this process.</p><p>“I feel like our quarterback room has some experience there in the sense that myself, (offensive coordinator) Doug Nussemeier, (QB coach) Scott Tolzein, we’ve all been around this for a while from a player’s and a coach’s perspective. We do feel like we’ve got a good room there, but obviously we’re always looking to upgrade our roster as we go. So it may happen.”</p><p>Moore said he wants his young quarterbacks to get as many reps as possible. So even if the team adds a veteran, it may come closer to the start of the season.</p><p>“We’ll see how this whole thing progresses,” Moore said. “The roster is a moving, dynamic thing throughout the offseason process. Right now, we feel great, we feel like we’ve got some young guys, we’re excited to just get them on the field and participate.</p><p>“We’ll give those guys a bunch of opportunities. It’ll be exciting to see them get out there, learn, grow, (and) make good plays.</p><h2><b>Saints still leaning on RB Alvin Kamara</b></h2><p>He’s a veteran with a lot of miles. But the Saints didn’t pick a running back until the sixth round of this year’s draft.</p><p>Moore said he expects the same old Kamara <a href="https://www.neworleanssaints.com/news/new-orleans-saints-running-back-alvin-kamara-prepared-for-workload-as-always" rel="noopener">in the 2025 season</a>, according to neworleanssaints.com.</p><p>“Alvin’s obviously one of the premier players in our league, his ability to run the football and play in the pass game,” Moore said. “And so, we want to utilize every aspect of that.</p><p>“He’s going to be a really big-time, impactful runner, running the football first and foremost. And then obviously the pass game, his ability to create matchups is going to be a huge advantage for us.”</p><p>One of the good things about Kamara is his ability to retain the details of the game. Moore said that elevates Kamara, along with his natural physical ability.</p><p>“What’s really fun being around Alvin is his mental capacity is really high,” Moore said. “He understands football at a really, really high level. He’s played so much game. I really enjoy and I look forward to more and more of those conversations as we go through this, of teaming up on this thing.</p><p>“Everyone knows his impact for a number of years now, and so, he’ll be a big part of this.”</p><p>As for Kamara, he said he likes the new look under Moore. He said the energy is different from any team he’s been a part of in New Orleans.</p><p>“Now, a change coming in – it’s different,” Kamra said. “I’ve got to kind of train my mind to be like, ‘I can’t look at how things used to be done.’ I’ve got to get with this. But tough decisions are coming, and here are two Saints players in danger of being cut after the team’s 2025 minicamp.</p><p>Coming off a disappointing season and under new coach Kellen Moore, the Saints face many challenges this year. And one of the players who might not be around is running back Kendre Miller. He’s impacted by the recent signing of Cam Akers.</p><p>One of the biggest problems for Miller is his inability to get on the field. He has missed 20 of a possible 34 games in his two NFL seasons.</p><h2><b>Saints RB Kendre Miller could be in roster trouble</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/New-Orleans-Saints-RB-Kendre-Miller.jpg"><figcaption>Wm. Glasheen USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin</figcaption></figure><p>During the 2024 season, Miller said he didn’t need <a href="https://www.neworleanssaints.com/news/kendre-miller-running-back-new-orleans-saints-2024-nfl-season-player-recap" rel="noopener">to show anything</a>, according to neworleanssaints.com.</p><p>“I don’t feel like I’ve got to prove anything to anybody,” Miller said. “It’s really myself. I didn’t really get to play my rookie year a whole lot. The two games that I was in, it was kind of iffy. But the Chargers game, my last couple of carries that I got, I was just like I’ve been doing this my whole life. That just kind of gave me the confidence I need, so I got all the confidence in the world. None of that has ever slipped my mind. It was just like I still got it.”</p><p>Miller seemed to have maturity problems under Dennis Allen. But things <a href="https://sports.yahoo.com/article/saints-coach-kellen-moore-emphasizes-192638464.html" rel="noopener">have reportedly changed</a> under Moore, according to the Saints’ YouTube page via yahoo.com.</p><p>“First day (of OTAs) was a blank slate (for Miller),” Moore said. “Whatever’s happened in the past, we acknowledged. But it has no bearing in the future.”</p><h2><b>RB Kendre Miller enters season in backup mode</b></h2><p>Miller doesn’t have a path to the starting position. That’s occupied by Alvin Kamara, who <a href="https://www.si.com/nfl/saints/saints-news/saints-kellen-moore-has-telling-comments-on-alvin-kamara-pat3" rel="noopener">drew high praise</a> from Moore, according to Sports Illustrated.</p><p>“Alvin’s obviously one of the premier players in our league, his ability to run the football and play in the pass game,” Moore said. “And so, we want to utilize every aspect of that. He’s going to be a really big-time, impactful runner, running the football first and foremost. The team grabbed him in the sixth round of this year’s draft.</p><h2><b>WR Cedrick Wilson Jr. needs to battle for a spot</b></h2><p>The six-year veteran caught only 20 passes for the Saints in 2024. He drew four starting assignments.</p><p>Wilson has hope, having been paired with Moore in Dallas. In the 2021 season, Wilson caught 45 passes for 602 yards and six touchdowns.</p><p>The good news for Wilson is Moore’s offensive approach, which should make things <a href="https://www.louisianasports.net/2025/06/16/15962/" rel="noopener">easier for the receivers</a>, according to louisianasports.net.</p><p>“(Moore is) going to allow guys to participate, and we’re going to take advantage of guys’ talents,” wide receivers coach Keith Williams said. “And (not) be afraid. And then, if we feel (the receivers) have the talent, let’s teach them the route instead of negating the fact that they can do it. Let’s just teach it to them because we believe they have the talent.”</p><p>Another good thing for Wilson and the receivers will be the comfort level of the quarterbacks. Rookie Tyler Shough said the QB room believes in Moore.</p><p>“Everywhere he’s been, each quarterback has had success in their own way,” Shough said. “I think he does a really good job of keeping the language QB-friendly, where it’s grouped into families. It all makes sense. You’re going out there, you’re playing fast. You know what you’re trying to attack.”</p><h2><b>Do Saints WRs have something to prove?</b></h2><p>Leading the way at the receiver position for the Saints will be Chris Olave. He should get plenty of help from Rashid Shaheed. And Brandin Cooks, at this stage of his career, seems like a good option for the WR3 spot.</p><p>Wilson fits in right now with a second-team group that includes Kevin Austin Jr. and Bub Means. Dante Pettis, Mason Tipton, Donovan Peoples-Jones, Moochie Dixon, and Chris Tyree round out the competition.</p><p>Of course, the receivers will have to work with a quarterback who may be inconsistent. Regardless of who gets the starting nod, it’s unlike he will be consistent. Then, they made headlines again after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/saints-news-derek-carr-retires-amid-shoulder-injury">quarterback Derek Carr announced he was retiring from football</a> due to a prolonged and nagging shoulder injury. It has been a rollercoaster offseason. But now, with mandatory minicamp underway, the headlines have shifted to more basic cuts or signings, including the <a href="https://x.com/AroundTheNFL/status/1933654362770874705">recent signing</a> of running back Cam Akers after a tryout.</p><p>Akers signed with the Saints after spending two practices during mandatory minicamp. He joins Alvin Kamara, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Kendre Miller, and rookie sixth-round pick Devin Neal in a crowded backfield. Kamara is easily the best running back on the roster, but the battle will be over who wins the job for the second string.</p><p>The 2020 second-round pick turns 26 in June and still has plenty left in the tank as a running back in the NFL, but it might not be as a starter. The Los Angeles Rams drafted him, and after the 2023 season, traded him to the Minnesota Vikings. Then, Akers signed with the Houston Texans for the 2024-2025 season, but the Texans traded him to the Vikings in his second stint with the team halfway through the season.</p><p>He finished the year with 104 carries and 444 rushing yards with two touchdowns. Then, he had 14 receptions for 68 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns.</p><p>Discussing the addition of Akers during Tuesday’s media session, Moore complemented what he’s seen from the veteran back, as he <a href="https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/new-orleans-saints-to-sign-free-agent-rb-cam-akers-after-minicamp-invitation-per-report/" rel="noopener">brings plenty of experience to the table</a>.</p><p>“Cam is an experienced player,” Moore said via CBS Sports. “He’s done a lot throughout this league. You’re always trying to evaluate as many players as possible as you go through this. So we felt like it was a great opportunity, and we are fired up that he wanted to come out here.”</p><p>His NFL career has been more bumpy than expected, especially after being a five-star recruit out of Mississippi and a standout at Florida State. In five NFL seasons, Akers has totaled 502 rushing attempts for 2,025 yards and 13 touchdowns, and he has also caught 52 passes for 388 yards and four touchdowns.</p><p>The new-look Saints are in line to utilize their ground game even more without Carr. Tyler Shough, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/saints-news-new-orleans-drafts-tyler-shough-not-shedeur-sanders-no-40">their rookie quarterback</a>, is most likely starting under center, and he will need help to get acclimated to the NFL. While Moore wouldn’t reveal who’s winning the early battle, he would express on Thursday <a href="https://www.neworleanssaints.com/news/new-orleans-saints-finish-minicamp-with-team-activity-after-completing-the-necessary-offseason-work" rel="noopener">how excited he is to see</a> each quarterback develop, according to the team’s website.</p><p>“I like where those guys are heading,” Moore said. “A lot of the quarterback process during the OTA phase is really focused on their command and their control, their ability to call the play, take control at the line of scrimmage. I thought all those guys get a check there, they did a really good job.”</p><p>“You see them make the throws that you need to make, they certainly made those plays, and I think their preparation has been really good,” Moore said. “The execution, just the consistency, is going to be the big aspect as we continue to grow this thing. In a column from ESPN’s Dan Graziano, he spoke about how it’s a valid thought that Shough <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/45485035/2025-nfl-quarterback-questions-32-teams-battles-contracts-expectations" rel="noopener">“might be the QB1,”</a> but there are some on the team who adore Rattler.</p><p>“When the Saints drafted Tyler Shough in the second round and then Derek Carr retired a few months later, it certainly was fair to assume Shough would be in line to take over as the starter. And he absolutely might be the QB1,” Graziano wrote. “But there are people in the Saints’ building who like Spencer Rattler and want to give him a chance to compete with Shough for the starting job. Still, this past season was a disaster. After starting 2-7, they fired Dennis Allen. They would finish the year 5-12, which was their lowest amount of wins since 2005, the year before Drew Brees and Sean Payton arrived in New Orleans. The<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/saints-news-new-orleans-hiring-eagles-kellen-moore-head-coach"> Saints would hire Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore</a> as their new head coach. Now Moore needs to get the most out of their roster. These are the three underrated sleepers who could break out for the Saints in the 2025 NFL season.</p><p>The 2024 season was a disaster for the Saints. By the end of the season, players such as Chris Olave and Derek Carr had both been injured. The Carr injury would lead to his retirement this offseason. While they started 2-0, they would lose seven straight, leading to the firing of their head coach. They would then win three of their next four, before ending the season on a four-game losing streak.</p><p>As the core of the team that was a consistent playoff contender is mostly gone, a new group of players is ready to step up. There are plenty of players on this team who could make an impact this year, and these are the ones that need to if the Saints are going to contend again this year.</p><h2><b>A rookie makes an impact in New Orleans</b></h2><p>With the retirement of Derek Carr, the Saints are in a precarious quarterback situation. They have Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener on the roster from last season, but it is a rookie expected to get the starting job in Tyler Shough. Still, he is not the rookie who will be making the surprise impact this year. That is sixth-round pick Devin Neal.<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/3-saints-veterans-roles-pushed-by-rookies-2025"> Neal has already shown he could be an impact rookie for the Saints</a>, even before training camp has begun.</p><p>To start with, he is not going to take the starting job from Alvin Kamara, but he will be an impactful complement. Kamara will be 30 years old when the new season begins, and is coming off a career high in rushing yards. Further, he carried the ball 228 times last year, the second most of his NFL career. He also had 68 receptions last season. Further, Kamara played in just 14 games and has missed time in each of the last seven seasons. The Saints need a quality second back that can step in when needed, but also complement Kamara being a short-yardage, inside running back.</p><p>The expectation was for Kendre Miller to be that complement, but has has struggled in his NFL career. Miller has played in just 14 games over two years, playing in less than half the available games due to injury. Further, he has averaged just 3.8 yards per carry while scoring just twice. Neal averaged 5.7 yards per carry in college while scoring 16 touchdowns in each of the last two seasons. Neal will be the perfect complement to Kamara and will break out before the end of the season.</p><h2><b>The Saints have a new defensive star</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/X-New-Orleans-Saints-underrated-sleepers-who-could-break-out-in-2025-NFL-season-2.jpg"><figcaption>Brad Penner-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Saints traded away Marshon Lattimore last season, and then Paulson Adebo left in free agency. This means New Orleans needs a new star in the secondary this season. With both corners who started last season as the starting cornerbacks now gone, the Saints need to find a stud replacement. They have that player on their roster. Kool-Aid McKinstry was a second-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft and has already shown to be a quality defensive back in the NFL.</p><p>McKinstry was solid last year. He had 42 tackles last season, including two tackles for a loss. He was also sixth on the team with six pass breakups, but he did not have an interception last year. He was also reliable last year, playing in 15 games and nearly every snap when he was active. McKinstry<a href="https://footballanalysis1.com/2025/05/22/one-sleeper-player-to-watch-on-every-nfl-team-in-2025/" rel="noopener"> allowed a catch rate</a> of just 57.9 percent while having a coverage grade of 67.1.</p><p>McKinstry will also be helped out by<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/saints-news-kellen-moore-hires-brandon-staley-new-orleans-coordinator"> new defensive coordinator Brandon Staley</a>. Staley has primarily used a man-to-man scheme in his coaching career. This is a similar scheme design to what McKinstry played in during his college years, and he will be able to adapt to it quickly. McKinstry was solid as a rookie, but this is the year he breaks out into something more.</p><h2><b>A potential 2024 breakout candidate finally hits his stride </b></h2><p>Injuries derailed the season for the New Orleans Saints. Chris Olave played in just eight games last year, while Cedrick Wilson Jr. led all wide receivers in games played with 15. The Saints did bring in Brandin Cooks this offseason. Still, Cooks will be 32 years old at the start of the season, and has not seen over 60 catches or over 100 targets in the last three seasons. He is not the same player who left the Saints after the 2016 season.</p><p>Last season, expectations were high for another Saints wide receiver, but <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/saints-news-big-rashid-shaheed-injury-move">Rashid Shaheed suffered a season-ending injury</a>. He was solid in his rookie season, playing in 12 games and bringing in 28 of 34 targets for 488 yards and two touchdowns. He would make a jump in his second season, coming away with 46 receptions on 75 targets for 719 yards and five touchdowns. The expectation for Shaheed was continued improvements, and he was showing that early on. In his first six games, he had 20 receptions on 41 targets for 349 yards. That gave him 17.5 yards per reception, the most of his career. He was also outpacing Olave in terms of targets and receptions early in the season. Shaheed was on pace for nearly 1,000 yards and double-digit touchdowns before the injury.</p><p>With the Saints going to be having a young quarterback, they need a reliable wide receiver to break out. So far in his career, Shaheed has shown to be that. If he can pick up where he left off before the injury in 2024, he will have a great year. The Saints have had just one 1,000-yard receiver since 2020, and they will have another one this year as Shaheed breaks out in a big way.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

This is where I want to be.”</p><h2><b>The Saints head into 2025 with relatively unknown expectations</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Kellen-Moore.jpg"><figcaption>Stephen Lew-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>With the announcement of Carr’s retirement and the hiring of Moore, New Orleans certainly does not have the playoffs-or-bust expectations it has had over the past few seasons. And that is probably for the best, as this franchise had not made the postseason since Drew Brees was under center. Olave has been one of the bright spots on this roster the past few seasons.</p><p>A former No. 11 overall pick out of Ohio State, the San Diego, California native racked up 1,000+ receiving yards in his first two seasons in the league. Unfortunately, in 2024, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/saints-news-chris-olave-carted-off-panthers">Olave picked up a few concussions</a>, which resulted in him playing just eight games last season. While New Orleans could certainly get a lot out of its star wideout should it trade him, having a reliable target on the outside will be critical for Tyler Shough’s development. The Saints still have Alvin Kamara and a revamped offensive line, so whoever is the quarterback is not walking into a dire situation. But Olave still fills a significant need on this team.</p><p>Overall, there is reason for optimism for the 2025 New Orleans Saints. The schedule is manageable with just four of the team’s opponents coming off postseason appearances. In addition, Kellen Moore is an innovative offensive coach who should get the best out of elite talents like Kamara and Olave. This group could potentially break the franchise’s postseason drought, but regardless of whether that happens, it’s crucial that the Saints show growth and a clear direction throughout 2025.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The biggest question for the Saints right now is the quarterback room and who will emerge as the starter. It seems a real QB competition is brewing in New Orleans.</p><p>Dan Graziano wrote an <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/45485035/2025-nfl-quarterback-questions-32-teams-battles-contracts-expectations" rel="noopener">ESPN article breaking down quarterback questions</a> for all 32 teams in the NFL. When discussing the Saints, the insider wrote that the Saints are far from knowing who their starter will be. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/saints-news-derek-carr-reason-turning-down-30-million">Derek Carr has retired</a>, and Spencer Rattler is the one QB with experience on the team. That is not a great sign. However, drafting rookie Tyler Shough from Louisville is a move that the front office is loving, and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/rising-new-orleans-saints-rookie-turning-heads-2025-otas">Shough is already turning heads in OTAs</a>.</p><p>Here is what Graziano said about the current Saints QB situation.</p><p>“When the Saints drafted Tyler Shough in the second round and then Derek Carr retired a few months later, it certainly was fair to assume Shough would be in line to take over as the starter. And he absolutely might be the QB1. But there are people in the Saints’ building who like Spencer Rattler and want to give him a chance to compete with Shough for the starting job. And so far this offseason, Rattler has shown improvement over his poor 2024 rookie performance.”</p><p>Rattler was an elite college quarterback at both Oklahoma before Caleb Williams broke onto the scene, as well as at South Carolina. Rattler has an elite arm and is quick enough to make plays outside of the pocket. Shough is one year older than Rattler, so it is hard to know who will step up and become the guy. Shough was Justin Herbert’s backup at Oregon in 2018; that is how long he has been playing in college.</p><p>Graziano finished his statement with what to expect.</p><p>“As of now, expect the Saints to set up training camp as a true competition between Shough and Rattler. Could Shough have the edge as the player the new coaching staff drafted with the 40th pick? Absolutely.
