The team listed both players as questionable on Friday’s final injury report, joining quarterback Brock Purdy, who has already been ruled out with shoulder and toe injuries, setting up Mac Jones to make his regular-season debut.</p><p>After missing Wednesday and Thursday’s practices, Williams worked off to the side with trainers before participating on a limited basis on Friday. He left the field briefly in that game but returned and finished, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/49ers-news-trent-williams-disastrous-week-1-seahawks-sound-alarm-bells">though he allowed six pressures</a>, tied for the third most among tackles in Week 1, earning poor Pro Football Focus marks (62nd in pass blocking, 51st in run blocking, and 56th overall).</p><p>Since his arrival in 2020, the Niners are 4–12 in games Williams has missed due to injury. That track record, combined with tight end George Kittle’s absence on injured reserve (hamstring), leaves major questions about the 49ers’ offensive stability. Spencer Burford, a guard by trade with 29 career starts at that position, is the likely replacement if Williams cannot play. Burford has only 31 career snaps at left tackle, all in Week 15 last season against Miami, and graded poorly in preseason action (51.8 pass-blocking grade on 92 snaps).</p><p>Jennings, meanwhile, injured his left shoulder in the fourth quarter against Seattle and did not return. MRI and CT scans revealed no structural damage, however, he did not practice on Wednesday or Thursday. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/49ers-news-jauan-jennings-huge-step-back-injury-vs-saints">On Friday, he returned in limited fashion</a>, running routes and catching passes. The team continues to monitor his availability, with his status to be determined when inactives are released 90 minutes before kickoff. Jennings caught two passes for 16 yards before leaving Week 1.</p><p>If Jennings cannot suit up, the Niners will lean on a reshuffled receiving corps. Rookie Ricky Pearsall led the team in Week 1 with 108 yards against the Seahawks, while veterans Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Skyy Moore, and newly signed Kendrick Bourne provide depth. Russell Gage, elevated from the practice squad in Week 1, could be activated again if needed.</p><p>The 49ers also trialed a left-footed punter at practice Friday to prepare returners for Saints rookie Kai Kroeger, who punts left-footed. He started against the Seattle Seahawks, but left the game after posting just two catches for 16 yards. Ricky Pearsall and Christian McCaffrey picked up the slack, combining for 13 catches and 181 receiving yards.</p><p>Despite the lackluster Week 1, Jennings is coming off a career-high 975 receiving yards in 2024. His receiving yard total was second on the team behind George Kittle, ahead of Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel and Pearsall.</p><p>San Francisco desperately needs Jennings to remain on the field, given its current injury outlook. In addition to Purdy, the team will also be without pass-catchers Kittle, Aiyuk, DeMarcus Robinson and Trent Taylor. The 49ers’ rookie receiver, Jordan Watkins, is also questionable with an ankle injury.</p><p>If Jennings, who remains listed as questionable, suffers a setback, either Russell Gage or Marquez Valdes-Scantling will likely step into the starting lineup. The team started just two wideouts in Week 1 — Pearsall and Jennings — and fullback Kyle Juszczyk. Considering how limited Jones’ receiving room will be, nothing about San Francisco’s approach should change.</p><p>Without Kittle, the 49ers have to choose between Luke Farrell and Jake Tonges as their Week 2 starting tight end. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the worst news. The 49ers’ quarterback, Brock Purdy, could also miss time. That did not stop Richard Sherman from supporting him.</p><p>Sherman is familiar with San Francisco, having clashed with the likes of Colin Kaepernick during his time as a Seahawk. While the former cornerback likely still carries some resentment for teams in the NFC West, he has been a big supporter of Purdy. The young quarterback was Mr. Irrelevant back in the 2022 NFL Draft. He responded by leading the team to Super Bowl LVIII.</p><p>When <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/49ers-news-brock-purdy-san-francisco-5-year-265-million-contract-extension">Purdy got his contract extension</a>, experts around the league did not like it. They felt that the quarterback’s success was more because of his head coach, Kyle Shanahan, than his individual talent. Sherman, on the other hand, has defended Purdy since he got paid. If there’s one thing for certain, it’s that Purdy won’t play Sunday, and it’ll be the former New England Patriots and Jacksonville Jaguars in Jones starting.</p><p>“Going into the scans and all that, I’ll tell you that the feeling was more on the positive side than what it could have been going in there,” Lynch said, according to 49ers Webzone. “That was a good thing. We look forward to getting Brock back, but in his stead, we’re confident in Mac and his ability to compete at a high level for us.”</p><p>In the opening win over the Seattle Seahawks, Purdy would complete 26 of 35 pass attempts for 277 yards, along with two touchdowns and two interceptions. I want to be a part of a good culture and in my eighth year of my career, I want to win,” he said. The choice makes sense—since 2019, Piñeiro <a href="https://www.nbcsportsbayarea.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/eddy-pineiro-contract-atlanta-falcons/1873772/" rel="noopener">has carved out a reputation</a> as one of the NFL’s most accurate kickers, and the 49ers have been perennial contenders, reaching four NFC Championship Games in the last six years.</p><p>San Francisco’s patience with Moody ran out after Week 1. In the 49ers’ 17-13 win over the Seahawks, the former Michigan standout went 1-for-3 on field goals, including a 27-yarder that clanged off the upright and a 36-yard attempt that was blocked. After a strong rookie campaign in 2023 (21-for-24 on field goals, 60-for-61 on PATs), his accuracy cratered. He connected on just 70.6% of his kicks in 2024, including a brutal 50% from beyond 40 yards. Overall, his 74.2% career field goal rate pales in comparison to Piñeiro’s career mark of 88.1%, which ranks third among active kickers.</p><p>The 29-year-old Piñeiro, now wearing No. 18, has logged five NFL seasons across stints with the Bears, Jets, and Panthers. He’s been remarkably steady, ranking as the fourth-most accurate kicker in league history. His absence from a roster this summer puzzled many, but Piñeiro explained he was simply waiting for the right fit.</p><p>“I just wanted the right opportunity, and thank God this opportunity came up and this is what I wanted,” Piñeiro said.</p><p>For San Francisco, the move signals a pivot from developmental patience to win-now urgency. The 49ers’ roster remains loaded despite early injuries, and special teams miscues are a luxury a championship contender can’t afford.</p><p>Piñeiro understands the stakes. “At the end of the day you just got to make kicks, and I know if I don’t make kicks, I’ll be out of here,” he said. Purdy suffered multiple injuries during <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/seattle-seahawks/seahawks-most-blame-crushing-week-1-loss-49ers">the team’s Week 1 win over the Seattle Seahawks</a> on Sunday evening. As a result, the team is looking for a bit of insurance under center heading into Week 2.</p><p>To be clear, no official designation has been given for Purdy. There remains a chance he is cleared to play this coming week. However, current reporting does not give the 49ers signal-caller a good chance of suiting up. On Wednesday, the Niners <a href="https://x.com/TomPelissero/status/1965883864351666429" rel="noopener">worked out a veteran quarterback</a>, which could signal Purdy’s status for the game.</p><p>“Veteran QB Mike White worked out for the #49ers today. Kyle Shanahan said they’d like to add another QB with Purdy hurt, but not sure they’ll be able to given other roster issues,” NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported on Wednesday.</p><p>Mike White has bounced around the league in his career. He rose to prominence with the New York Jets during the 2021 NFL season when he took over for an injured Zach Wilson. He has also spent time with the Dallas Cowboys, Miami Dolphins, and Buffalo Bills.</p><p>For his career, White has thrown for 2247 yards in 15 games. He does have a 400+ yard performance under his belt, which came with the Jets during the 2021 season. He has completed nearly 61.5% of his passes, throwing for nine touchdowns and 13 interceptions.</p><p>If signed, he would likely serve as depth for the 49ers. San Francisco would turn to former first-round pick Mac Jones in the event that Purdy can’t play Sunday. San Francisco also has Kurtis Rourke on the roster, but he’s currently on the non-football injury list.</p><p>Fans will certainly want to monitor this situation as it develops. Despite a late rally led by Spencer Rattler, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/saints-most-to-blame-for-underwhelming-week-1-loss-to-cardinals">Saints couldn’t quite get in the end zone</a> at the end of the game and now sit at 0-1 heading into Week 2.</p><p>Now, the Saints will try to get into the win column on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers, who are a little beat up coming off of their season-opening win against the Seattle Seahawks. The Niners recently placed star tight end George Kittle on injured reserve, and now quarterback <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/49ers-news-kyle-shanahan-declares-brock-purdy-long-shot-vs-saints">Brock Purdy is dealing with a pair of injuries that make him a “long-shot”</a> to play in Week 2.</p><p>The Saints are <a href="https://x.com/DMRussini/status/1965875074428456983" rel="noopener">well aware of that</a> and have been preparing for backup quarterback Mac Jones all week long, according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic.</p><p>“Per source, the Saints have been preparing all week for Mac Jones to be the 49ers’ starter Sunday in New Orleans,” Russini reported on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>Jones doesn’t provide the same ability to play off-script or create plays out of structure that Purdy does, but he absolutely has the skillset to run Kyle Shanahan’s offense for a week or two if needed. Shanahan excels at scheming players open, which should play into Jones’ hands as someone who can get the ball out on time.</p><p>Still, this should open up opportunities for the New Orleans pass rush to get home against a 49ers offensive line that struggled at times against the Seahawks’ front in Week 1. Seattle has more talent on the defensive line than New Orleans does, but Jones will not be able to escape the pocket in the same way Purdy can.</p><p>New Orleans will also now have a new sense of focus on slowing down Christian McCaffrey and the 49ers running game. One of those players was Christian McCaffrey, who was questionable coming into the game after dealing with a calf injury in practice. Nonetheless, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/49ers-rumors-the-sign-that-christian-mccaffrey-will-play-week-1-seahawks">McCaffrey suited up</a>, and he finished the game with 69 rush yards and nine receptions for 74 yards.</p><p>As the 49ers get prepared for Week 2 against the New Orleans Saints, McCaffrey was asked about the calf injury and <a href="https://x.com/CamInman/status/1965872446885736559" rel="noopener">kept it short</a> and simple.</p><p>“Nothing serious, never was,” McCaffrey said via Can Inman of the Bay Area News Group.</p><p>The 49ers are going to need McCaffrey now more than ever with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/49ers-news-kyle-shanahan-declares-brock-purdy-long-shot-vs-saints">Brock Purdy most likely not suiting up</a> in Week 2 and possibly for longer.</p><p>“Whether Brock is playing or not, it just comes down to everybody executing at a high level and keeping it that simple. It’s time to make some 49ers-Saints bold predictions, and examine how this weekend’s tilt at the Superdome might go.</p><p><a href="https://sportsbook.fanduel.com/navigation/nfl" rel="noopener">San Francisco is favored to beat New Orleans by 4.5 points,</a> according to FanDuel. However, that line could, and may very well drop as the game gets closer. If that happens, that could very well change things for the Niners. What once was a game many predicted would be a blowout could be closer than people thought.</p><p>These 49ers-Saints bold predictions will go over the status of these injuries, as well as others who benefit from them. Additionally, it will discuss past results and how they relate to this 49ers vs. Saints game. It’s time for a 49ers-Saints Week 2 preview, featuring three bold predictions that could come true this weekend.</p><h2><b>Jauan Jennings has eight receptions for 100 yards</b></h2><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/49ers-news-jauan-jennings-shoulder-positive-update-week-2-saints">Jennings got positive injury news</a> after sustaining a shoulder injury. Because of this, it opens up the chance for Jennings to play this weekend. Ricky Pearsall was the top receiver not named Christian McCaffrey in Week 1, garnering four receptions on seven targets for 108 yards. Conversely, Jennings only had two catches on five targets for 16 yards. But that could be an aberration, and this could be a chance for Jennings to make his mark.</p><p>The New Orleans defense was decent against the Arizona Cardinals’ receivers in Week 1. But with Kittle out, the Niners will likely lean more on their receivers. That means that Jennings could get his chance. If New Orleans does everything it can to contain McCaffrey and Pearsall, it could help Jennings. San Francisco will want to get him involved, especially as a way to give Jones a possible target to throw to.</p><p>Jennings has proven in the past that he can carry the Niners, as he did when he had 11 receptions for 175 yards against the Los Angeles Rams last season. He also had three games of 90 or more yards. This could be the week he hits 100 for the second time.</p><h2><b>The 49ers’ defense stuffs Alvin Kamara</b></h2><p>The Niners did everything they could to improve their run defense in the offseason. So far, the results look good, as they held Zach Charbonnet to 12 rushes for 47 yards and Kenneth Walker III to 10 rushes for 20 yards. This Niners’ defense looks legitimate once again.</p><p>Kamara has not had much success against the Niners. Remarkably, he has rushed 28 times for only 53 yards, averaging 1.9 yards per carry in the collective games. Although Kamara has had more success through the air (17 receptions for 138 yards in his career), it is not enough to warrant consideration.</p><p>Kamara rushed 11 times for 45 yards and a touchdown while catching both targets for 12 yards in Week 1 against the Cards. Yet, the Niners’ defense will close the gaps and force quarterback Spencer Rattler to look for other options. This is going to be a tough week for Kamara on the ground, and he will likely try to make up for it through the air.</p><h2><b>The 49ers-Saints game is low scoring and close</b></h2><p>As noted before, San Francisco is the favorite. Yet, this game feels like the ultimate trap. With all the injuries and the game being in New Orleans, nothing is set in stone. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/49ers-news-san-francisco-eddy-pineiro-replace-jake-moody">Niners just signed Eddy Pineiro to be their new kicker</a> after releasing Jake Moody. The good news is that this game will be in a dome, so the weather will have zero effect.</p><p>The Niners might struggle to get into the end zone if Jones ends up starting. While Jones is a serviceable backup, it’s difficult to generate any offense in the NFL if you are missing most of your starters. Yes, McCaffrey is still there, but the Niners don’t have many other reliable options at the moment, at least not proven ones. All the injuries and ailments point to this game becoming a defensive slugfest. Significantly, there is a chance that the San Francisco defense might score more than the offense.</p><p>The Niners won 17-13 in Week 1 with many of their starters out, but with Purdy and Kittle playing. If both are out, this showdown in Week 2 could be similar, if not worse, offensively. The Niners might be able to score a touchdown. However, they will have a hard time consistently generating any offense unless their wide receivers step up, and San Francisco can move the chains consistently.
