That included James Cook, who just welcomed a new baby, and Dawson Knox, who had been dealing with a back injury.</p><p>Having Cook in the lineup will be a massive boon for the Bills. While Damien Harris is in town, Cook has still managed to run for 169 yards and his 29 attempts. Averaging 5.8 yards per carry, Cook has potential for a big play every time he touches the ball. He proved that in Week 2, when he ran for 123 yards on 17 touches for the Raiders.</p><p>The Bills went out and drafted Dalton Kincaid in the first-round of this year’s NFL Draft. However, Knox has had a nose for the end zone since joining Buffalo. He has already caught one touchdown pass this season after scoring six times last year.</p><p>With Josh Allen at the helm, the Bills have one of the best offenses in the NFL. You can follow D.J. on Twitter @fosterdj3.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Fantasy Sports</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Buffalo Bills running back James Cook has a bright fantasy football outlook for the 2023 season in an incredibly high-powered offense as the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bills-news-james-cook-drops-truth-bomb-on-buffalos-open-rb1-role" rel="noopener">presumed starter</a> in Buffalo’s backfield. Cook is a dangerous receiver out of the backfield, can rip off big plays with explosive speed, averaged 5.7 yards per carry as a rookie, and has received glowing reviews from Bills personnel.</p><p>So why isn’t Cook being drafted like a legitimate RB2 with massive upside?</p><h2>James Cook’s Average Draft Position</h2><p>Cook’s current <a href="https://www.fantasypros.com/nfl/adp/ppr-overall.php" rel="noopener">average draft position</a> (ADP) in PPR leagues is just 81.8 overall and RB30, according to FantasyPros.</p><p>Last season, playing primarily behind Devin Singletary, Cook received only 89 carries as a rookie and finished as the RB44. However, towards the end of the season, Cook worked his way into more backfield snaps (roughly 40% over the last seven games) and was the RB25 in points per game. Even on the bad end of a timeshare, Cook was putting up RB2 type numbers.</p><p>But what Cook did with his limited carries should hold some major weight heading into his second season. Cook was Pro Football Focus’s No.1 ranked runner in breakaway run rate (44%) and averaged a robust 5.7 yards per carry last season. Perhaps even more encouraging for fantasy players was Cook’s involvement in the passing game while he was on the field, putting up a 27% target rate per route run, good for top-5 amongst all running backs.</p><p>The offseason has broken nicely thus far for Cook’s fantasy outlook as well. The Bills added underrated rusher Damien Harris into the fold <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/twitter-predicts-bills-james-cook-fantasy-football-breakout-after-devin-singletarys-texans-deal" rel="noopener">after losing</a> Devin Singletary in free agency to the Houston Texans while receiving specialist Nyheim Hines suffered a season-ending injury in a jet ski accident, leaving the pass-catching role wide open for Cook to fill.</p><p>While Harris could very easily snipe goalline touches from Cook, those high-quality touches aren’t necessary for Cook to return value at his current ADP. The passing game and big play potential alone should have Cook firmly on the RB2 radar, even if it’s close to a full 50-50 split with Harris. Out of the two backs, Cook has more potential for a true three-down role, as Harris has rarely been used out of the backfield as a receiver, compiling just 40 receptions across four seasons with the New England Patriots. Think of this as an Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram type of situation.</p><p>Cook is being drafted much closer to his floor than his ceiling, as an injury to Harris or a bigger split in Cook’s favor in the Bills’ backfield than expected could easily propel him to a top-12 PPR finish at the running back position.</p><h2>James Cook’s Fantasy Football Outlook</h2><p>While there are questions about what kind of opportunity James Cook will receive in the Bills’ backfield, there doesn’t appear to be any questions about his overall talent and versatility. The important thing is that the Bills clearly view Cook as someone who can thrive in every situation, and while Harris represents an upgrade over Devin Singletary as a pure rusher, Cook’s comfort level in his second year in Buffalo’s offense could give him an early edge and the opportunity to take the starting job and literally run away with it.</p><p>Cook’s skill set lines up perfectly with what Buffalo wants to do, as the Bills have ranked <a href="https://www.espn.co.uk/fantasy/football/story/_/id/38151718/fantasy-football-sleeper-running-backs-rb-breakout-potential" rel="noopener">fifth in pass rate</a> for the past three years. Cook also seems aware of what holes he needs to fill in Buffalo’s running back room and <a href="https://www.newyorkupstate.com/buffalo-bills/2023/06/no-doubt-buffalo-bills-james-cook-says-he-is-obviously-rb1-for-team-in-2023.html" rel="noopener">is confident</a> in his abilities, as he told Ryan Talbot of NYup.com.</p><p>“Just come in and do what I do. Change the game with my versatility,” Cook said. “Catching the ball out of the backfield. Pass blocking. Just try to do what I can do to help the team win games and ultimately win the Super Bowl.”</p><p>As a selection going in the seventh round or later in most drafts, Cook is a home run in the dreaded <a href="https://www.espn.co.uk/fantasy/football/story/_/id/38151718/fantasy-football-sleeper-running-backs-rb-breakout-potential" rel="noopener">RB dead zone</a> of drafts. It’s hard to identify any other running back sleepers that offer a better combination of talent, potential, and opportunity than Cook does. The younger Cook brother expects to be the starting running back for the Bills when they start the season.</p><p>“Just come in and do what I do. Change the game with my versatility,” <a href="https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2023/06/22/james-cook-feels-hes-obviously-rb1-for-the-bills-entering-2023/" rel="noopener">Cook said</a>, via Ryan Talbot of NYUp.com. “Catching the ball out of the backfield. Pass blocking. Just try to do what I can do to help the team win games and ultimately win the Super Bowl.</p><p>Cook was selected in the second round in the 2022 draft by the Bills out of Georgia and he gained 507 yards, which was the third-highest total on the team. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/twitter-predicts-bills-james-cook-fantasy-football-breakout-after-devin-singletarys-texans-deal" rel="noopener">Cook may be optimistic</a> about his status for the upcoming season, but he will have plenty of competition in training camp.</p><p>The Bills also have Latavius Murray, Nyheim Hines and Damien Harris on the roster, and it’s possible that one of those players will step forward and scuttle Cook’s plans. None of the candidates will have to worry about the status of last year’s starter Devin Singletary. He has moved on to the Houston Texans after signing with them in the offseason.</p><p>Dalvin Cook was released by the Vikings earlier this month, and he may be biding his time before he finds a new employer. The elder Cook remain James Cook’s inspiration.</p><p>“My goal is to be an All-Pro or Pro Bowler like my brother,” Cook said. “Hopefully be in the Pro Bowl with him one day.”</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The Bills’ running back will match his brother, Dalvin Cook, who wears No. 4 for the Minnesota Vikings.</p><p>James Cook wore No. 28 as a rookie with the Bills last season. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/vikings-news-dalvin-cook-surgery-2019-injury" rel="noopener">Dalvin Cook</a> wore No. 33 in his first five seasons with the Vikings before making the change a year ago. The NFL first allowed running backs, wide receivers, tight ends, linebackers and defensive backs to wear single-digit jersey numbers in the 2021 season.</p><p>Dalvin Cook reportedly <a href="https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-jersey-number-changes-2022-dalvin-cook-derwin-james/pkgfdptyxxyxn87jwk5gqbfw" rel="noopener">saved more than $1 million</a> by making the change in 2022 instead of for the 2021 season.</p><p>James Cook could become a bigger part of Buffalo’s offense along with his new number. Although he backed up Devin Singletary, Cook was probably the Bills’ best running back in the 2022 season. Cook had 507 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns on 5.7 yards per carry. Singletary signed with the Houston Texans in free agency, paving the way for Cook to have more carries in 2023.</p><p>The Bills also signed running back Damien Harris in free agency to join Cook in Buffalo’s backfield.</p><p>There’s at least a chance that Dalvin Cook could be wearing a new uniform next season. Rumors this offseason suggested that the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl-rumors-vikings-potential-dalvin-cook-trade" rel="noopener">Vikings</a> have explored the idea of trading Cook. Minnesota’s running has three seasons left on his five-year, $63 million contract.</p><p>Running backs can have a jersey number anywhere from 0-49 or 80-89. Hines is largely used as a pass-catcher out of the backfield. Buffalo is expected to sign another running back at some point in free agency, though Cook should be the lead tailback.</p><p>Singletary led the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bills-nfl-free-agents-roster" rel="noopener">Bills</a> with 819 yards on 4.6 yards per attempt last season.</p><p>Cooks’ workload increased down the stretch of the season. As he proved to be Buffalo’s best running back, the 23-year-old saw a bigger role in the Bills’ offense. In four of the last seven regular-season games, Cook had at least nine carries.</p><p>The increased workload didn’t hurt Cooks’ production. He averaged 6.5 yards per carry in those four games.</p><p>It’s been six years since Buffalo had a 1,000-yard rusher. Much of the Bills’ ground attack runs through Josh Allen. The quarterback has rushed for 763 and 762 yards, respectively, in the last two seasons. Allen has 38 rushing touchdowns in five NFL seasons.</p><p>The Bills were held to 64 rushing yards on 19 carries when they were eliminated by the Cincinnati Bengals in the divisional playoffs.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He revealed the role for both players following the Bills-Colts trade, <a href="https://twitter.com/agetzenberg/status/1587831341529419776" rel="noopener">per Alaina Getzenberg</a>.</p><p>“Brandon Beane said that this move ‘should not affect James [Cook] at all,'” Getzenberg wrote on Twitter.</p><p>“[The move] gives us the opportunity to be more versatile,” Beane said.</p><p>Nyheim Hines is a quality running back. However, he has played behind Jonathan Taylor in Indianapolis with the Colts over the past couple of years. This opportunity should benefit Hines in the long run. With that being said, the Bills are still going to feature James Cook on a fairly consistent basis. But Devin Singletary is the leader in the Bills’ backfield. Unless Cook plays well over the next couple of weeks, he could lose playing time as a potential third-string option.</p><p>The move to acquire Hines will benefit the Bills’ running back depth without question. James Cook and Nyheim Hines would be in the conversation for RB1 on some teams around the league. The fact that they may split carries behind Singletary provides Buffalo with no shortage of options in the backfield. And with Josh Allen leading the passing attack, the Bills’ offense is ready to roll.</p><p>The Bills are one of the best teams in the NFL and have Super Bowl aspirations. His 2022 fantasy prognosis is comparable to that of the top rookie RBs this season. Having said that, the NFL season and fantasy drafts are rapidly approaching. In this piece, we’re going to look at the important James Cook fantasy football outlook, and if he can add value at his current ADP?</p><p>Because of his second-round draft projection, pass-catching ability, explosiveness, and offensive circumstance, Cook has immediate sleeper fantasy appeal across all PPR formats. Here is what fantasy owners should anticipate from him this coming season.</p><h2><b>James Cook Fantasy Football Outlook</b></h2><p>Truthfully, Cook is one of the most divisive rookies this season. Overall, it was a tough draft year for rookie running backs. Even the obvious top two running backs, Breece Hall and Kenneth Walker III, found themselves in less-than-ideal landing locations. It’s also why Cook has risen in the rankings despite the fact that some critics dislike his play style.</p><p>Of course, when the best pass-catching RB in the class is picked by the Buffalo Bills at No. 63, you tend to pay attention. And fantasy managers have indeed taken notice. To wit, Cook has soared up draft boards and is now firmly in the mid-round mix.</p><p>He was a four-year starter at Georgia but didn’t seal his spot on the team until 2021. Cook, in fact, shared the backfield with multiple RBs including Zamir White and D’Andre Swift.</p><p>He ran 113 times for 728 yards and seven touchdowns in 15 games for the Bulldogs last season. He is a quick runner who can grab the lead or race into daylight. Cook would reel off massive plays on several occasions. To illustrate, 10+ yard runs accounted for about 40 percent of his 2021 running total (290).</p><p>Yes, there are concerns about him as a pure rusher, particularly his consistency, contact balance, and general aggressiveness. Still, Cook established himself as a receiving threat, collecting 27 catches for 284 yards and four touchdowns. Because he has the finest hands in the class, this is where he will provide value to the Bills.</p><p>The truth is the Bills needed another pass-catcher to target for Josh Allen. It was the reason they first pursued J.D. McKissic entering free agency. Of course, he rejected the Bills and returned to Washington after originally agreeing to terms. Cook’s pick almost confirms that this was a need they wished to fill.</p><p>Keep in mind that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bills-news-james-cook-has-bills-doing-double-take-with-dalvin-impersonation/">Cook will be the passing-down RB</a> on the NFL’s fifth-fastest offense. That could work either way for Cook. He will never be required to be the man, but even then, he should be useful in fantasy. Remember that chasing upside via targets is never a terrible tactic when seeking for extra depth on your squad.</p><p>Right now, Cook appears to be a mid-round prospect along with comparable running backs like Nyheim Hines, McKissic, and Michael Carter. If you want to wait for fantasy RBs or want some upside, Cook in the RB4 bracket is worth considering.</p><p>Last season, we witnessed what could happen if the Bills deployed a single running back as a workhorse. Singletary actually went off in their final four games. He carried 80 times for 375 yards and four touchdowns and caught 14 catches (17 targets) for 110 yards. That made him the RB2 over this period, trailing only Rashaad Penny (22.0 PPR/game to 19.7 PPR/game).</p><p>That means Singletary is on first and second down, with occasional red-zone use but no consistent passing volume. Cook, on the other hand, will trail Singletary in overall volume and will lack a consistent rushing floor. The youngster, however, makes up for it in receiving yards.</p><p>Experts have ranked Cook as the RB40 in PPR settings, with an ADP of 115. That puts him in the middle of the ninth round in 12-team fantasy teams.</p><p>There has been a lot of talk about how the Bills don’t target their running backs and how Cook is unlikely to get the projected volume. But what if Buffalo’s proclivity to throw stemmed from a lack of trust in its talent? Having Cook now allows the Bills to add a new dimension to their offense in 2022. That could be blind optimism or progressive thinking.</p><p>After everything, Cook will still play a part in this Bills offense. His true worth, though, may come in 2023, assuming Singletary leaves in free agency. Cook as an RB4/5 in a PPR scoring scheme might be lucrative in 2022, but there is always some uncertainty there. Singletary is still going to be Buffalo’s RB1, but do not discount RB2/flex upside for Cook as well.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

But given what he has shown so far, he could find himself rising up the depth chart into a bigger role.</p><p>James Cook is the younger brother of Minnesota Vikings running back Dalvin Cook. But there are some flashes of Dalvin there that I definitely see in James.”</p><p>Keenum went on to talk about how the Bills have begun to utilize James Cook. He said, “And to see him out of the backfield too, catching the ball, I think he’s got a little something to him. And I’m excited to be able to show what he can do.”</p><p>The Bills could have something special in James Cook. His brother has proven to be among the best running backs in the NFL.
