After losing <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/pittsburgh-steelers/steelers-news-when-najee-harris-time-steelers-over">Najee Harris to the Los Angeles Chargers</a> in free agency, the Pittsburgh Steelers are projected to take one of them.</p><p>The Steelers have <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/draft2025/insider/story/_/id/44687286/2025-nfl-draft-latest-buzz-rumors-news-sanders-saints-browns-predictions-trades" rel="noopener">“done a ton of work” scouting</a> the incoming running back class and are determined to walk away with one, according to ESPN’s Matt Miller.</p><p>“The Pittsburgh Steelers have done a ton of work on this talented running back group, according to scouting sources,” Miller wrote. “Pittsburgh lost starter Najee Harris in free agency and returns Jaylen Warren, but the expectation around the league is the team will draft a running back. Pittsburgh doesn’t have a second-round pick after trading it for wide receiver DK Metcalf, so this could be a Round 3 or Round 4 target.”</p><p>The Steelers will have one pick in each of rounds three, four and five to potentially use on a running back in the draft. TreVeyon Henderson, Cam Skattebo, Kaleb Johnson, Dylan Sampson and RJ Harvey headline the list of names projected to fall in that range.</p><p>Pittsburgh has not drafted a running back since 2021, when it took Harris in the first round. The move was criticized by many at the time and ended up flopping. While Harris topped 1,000 yards in each of his four seasons with the team, he left averaging just 3.9 yards per carry in his Steelers career.</p><h2><b>Steelers’ other 2025 NFL Draft needs</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Mike-Tomlin_890898.jpg"><figcaption>Tommy Gilligan-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Entering the 2025 NFL Draft, the Steelers’ biggest need remains the same as the beginning of free agency. Despite being <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/steelers-news-owner-hints-imminent-aaron-rodgers-signing">linked to Aaron Rodgers</a>, Pittsburgh still does not have a quarterback. Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson are on the roster, but neither would satisfy the fan base as a year-long starter.</p><p>With quarterback being their biggest need, the Steelers are expected to address the position in the first round. Should Jaxson Dart still be available at No. 21, he will likely receive the call from Pittsburgh.</p><p>Other than Dart, Pittsburgh would need to target one of Tyler Shough, Jalen Milroe, Kyle McCord, Quinn Ewers or Dillon Gabriel in the middle rounds. However, other than Dart, none of the other names are viewed as candidates to start as a rookie. While Cam Ward separated himself as the obvious top QB this year, several other passers are bound to jump up draft boards. One potential riser is former Syracuse standout Kyle McCord, who <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/nfl-stories/nfl-rumors-kyle-mccord-whole-package-nfl-draft">some evaluators view as the total package</a>.</p><p>After beginning his college career with Ohio State, McCord transferred to Syracuse and had a monster senior season. The New Jersey native led the nation in attempts (592), completions (391) and passing yards (4,779). He threw for 34 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, finishing with a rating of 148.8.</p><p>The <a href="https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/nfl-confidential-who-wants-draft-qb-most" rel="noopener">prolific campaign</a> surpassed Donovan McNabb’s long standing single-season Syracuse records, according to FOX Sports’ Jordan Schultz. And yet, McCord has largely gone unnoticed through the draft process despite playing exceptionally well at the college level and possessing legit NFL size at 6’3” and 218 pounds.</p><h2><b>Is Kyle McCord 2025’s big draft day riser?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Jets-Steelers-linked-to-record-breaking-Syracuse-QB-2.jpg"><figcaption>Brian Fluharty-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Well, McCord didn’t manage to remain invisible. The New York Jets and the Pittsburgh Steelers have taken notice. Both teams have shown interest in landing a quarterback in the draft and McCord could be the best option, per Schultz.</p><p>Yes, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/jets-rumors-insider-draft-prediction-justin-fields-signing">Jets recently signed Justin Fields</a> to a two-year deal. But with just $30 million guaranteed, Fields’ contract won’t prevent New York from selecting a quarterback if the team’s new leadership feels strongly about the pick.</p><p>The Jets have <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-york-jets/jets-rumors-jaxson-dart-buzz-louder-justin-fields-signing">primarily been linked to Jaxson Dart</a> and now McCord is making some noise. The issue for Gang Green is neither QB would be a good value with the seventh overall selection. The Jets would love to grab McCord in the middle rounds. But chances are he’ll be gone by then. And if the team waits on a signal caller until the second round, Dart could be long gone as well.</p><p>The Steelers on the other hand are better positioned to select <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/pittsburgh-steelers/steelers-rumors-insider-case-3-qbs-2025-nfl-draft">Dart, Tyler Shough or Shedeur Sanders</a> – assuming he falls in the first round – when they’re on the clock with the 21st pick. However, Pittsburgh doesn’t have a second-round selection so the team will either have to pull the trigger early or trade up from the third to get one of those three passers.</p><p>The Steelers have shown an interest in McCord as well as the team visited with the passer earlier this week. Pittsburgh is still waiting on <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/pittsburgh-steelers/steelers-news-aaron-rodgers-potential-free-agency-deadline-pittsburgh">Aaron Rodgers’ free agency decision</a>, which could have a significant impact on how the team approaches the draft. While many folks have believed the draft to be a potential deadline for Rodgers to make a decision on his future, the legendary quarterback revealed that isn’t the case when it comes to his dealings with the Steelers.</p><p>As of right now, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/nfl-rumors-steelers-linked-kirk-cousins-trade-aaron-rodgers-catch">Pittsburgh has a huge question mark at quarterback</a>, and while Rodgers would undoubtedly be the Week 1 starter should he sign with them, the team could be forced to select a passer in the draft if he still hasn’t made his decision. Rodgers revealed, though, that there’s <a href="https://twitter.com/RapSheet/status/1912924332931559562" rel="noopener">no deadline</a> for him to make his decision, and that he understands if the Steelers opt to move in a different direction as a result.</p><p>“This entire time, I haven’t felt like I owed anybody a decision at any point,” Rodgers said on “The Pat McAfee Show.” “I’ve said listen, if you need to move on and do something, love and respect. But there’s been no deadline. Lynn Swann and John Stallworth were dynamic threats in the passing game for Terry Bradshaw during the dynasty of the 1970s, while Hines Ward became a fan favorite with his physical style of play and performance in the clutch.</p><p>Stautner is the lone player on this list from before Noll took over. The Hall of Fame defensive lineman spent his entire career in Pittsburgh and is one of just three players with their number “officially” retired by the franchise, along with Joe Greene and Franco Harris.</p><h2><b>10. Jerome Bettis was rarely considered the best running back in the league, but that did not prevent him from <a href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/leaders/rush_yds_career.htm" rel="noopener">finishing eighth all-time</a> in the NFL in rushing yards, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/steelers-news-jerome-bettis-russell-wilson-justin-fields-qb1-competition">garnering Bettis Steelers Legend status</a>.</p><p>Bettis rushed for 1,000 in each of his first six seasons in the Steel City, and his 1997 campaign will go down as one of the best seasons by a running back in franchise history. The Bus had 1,665 rushing yards and seven touchdowns, averaging 4.4 yards per carry.</p><p>He had ten 100-yard games that year and did not rush for fewer than 63 yards in a contest. Webster is also second all time in <a href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/pit/career-av.htm" rel="noopener">Approximate Value accrued</a> for the Steelers — a stat that calculates a player’s worth to their team each season.</p><p>Plus, the Pittsburgh center was on the 1970s and 1980s All-Decade squads, giving him an advantage over the franchise’s other two Hall of Fame offensive linemen.</p><h2><b>8. Mel Blount</b></h2><p><b>Steelers honors: Five-time Pro Bowler, two-time First Team All-Pro, 1975 AP Defensive Player of the Year, Pro Football Hall of Fame</b></p><p>How many teams can boast having three Defensive Players of the Year in the prime of their career? And how many of those teams had different players take home the award in three consecutive seasons?</p><p>The Baltimore Ravens boasted a trio of DPOY’s in 2011 and 2012 (Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, and Terrell Suggs), but the Steelers are the only team to dominate the Defensive Player of the Year award as they did in the 1970s.</p><p>Joe Greene won the accolades in 1974, Mel Blount took home the hardware in 1975, and Jack Lambert was AP Defensive Player of the Year in 1976. Mel Blount’s 1975 campaign is easily the most statistically impressive of this trio of winners. Blount led the NFL with 11 interceptions — a total only surpassed twice in the seasons since.</p><p>The strong, physical Pittsburgh corner was so dominant that the NFL changed the rules in 1978 to prevent defenders from making contact with receivers more than five yards downfield. Mel Blount redefined the cornerback position in the 1970s, thus earning him a place on this special list.</p><h2><b>7. Jack Ham </b></h2><p><b>Steelers Honors: Eight-time Pro Bowler, six-time First Team All-Pro, Pro Football Hall of Fame</b></p><p>While Jack Lambert had his scowl and Joe Green had his “Mean” moniker, Jack Ham was often the overshadowed member of the Pittsburgh front seven. Yet the undersized linebacker managed to carve out his own Hall of Fame career as a member of the Steel Curtain.</p><p>Between 1974 and 1979, Ham was First Team All-Pro and a Pro Bowler every season. Along with Lambert, Green, and Blount, Ham was also a first-ballot Hall of Famer.</p><h2><b>6. Ben Roethlisberger</b></h2><p><b>Steelers honors: Six-time Pro Bowler, Steelers All-time Leader in Approximate Value</b></p><p>While Terry Bradshaw has four Super Bowl titles, it is hard to argue against Ben Roethlisberger as the better all-around quarterback.</p><p>Big Ben is fifth all-time in the NFL in passing yards, eighth in passing touchdowns, and just one of 10 QBs to throw for at least 5,000 yards in a season. Roethlisberger has one more career interception than Bradshaw, but he makes up for it with 206 more touchdown passes.</p><p>While a lack of playoff success in the second half of his career holds him back, Roethlisberger still owns two Super Bowl rings and holds just about every Steelers passing record and could arguably be much higher on this list.</p><h2><b>5. Troy Polamalu</b></h2><p><b>Steelers honors: Eight-time Pro Bowler, four-time First Team All-Pro, 2010 AP Defensive Player of the Year, Pro Football Hall of Fame</b></p><p>Like Rod Woodson a decade earlier, Troy Polamalu patrolled the Pittsburgh secondary with a fluidity and a feel for the game that most NFL players can only dream of. Polamalu was a strong safety in name only, roaming the field with unparalleled freedom.</p><p>The USC product could be found perfectly timing the snap and jumping over the entire offensive line to sack the quarterback. Two plays later, he was just as likely to make a diving interception 25 yards downfield.</p><p>Polamalu’s ability to make extravagant plays while consistently doing the little things to help his team win made him a first-ballot Hall of Famer in 2020 and put him among the best Steelers players ever.</p><h2><b>4. Pittsburgh went 11-3 in 1972, winning in the Divisional Round of the playoffs (the Immaculate Reception game) before falling in the AFC Championship, then lost in the Divisional Round in 1973.</p><p>The franchise drafted Lambert in the second round in 1974, and that season, Lambert won Defensive Rookie of the Year and helped guide the Steelers to their first of four Super Bowl titles in the 1970s.</p><p>With Lambert at middle linebacker, the Steelers never had a losing season and went 14-5 in postseason games. He was the catalyst for Pittsburgh’s breakthrough and will go down as one of the best defensive players in NFL history.</p><h2><b>3. TJ Watt</b></h2><p><b>Steelers honors: Seven-time Pro Bowler, four-time First Team All-Pro, 2021 AP Defensive Player of the Year</b></p><p>Since the franchise started awarding a team MVP award in 1969, no player had won the honor in three consecutive seasons. That is until TJ Watt came along. In just seven NFL seasons, Watt already holds the franchise record for career sacks and led the NFL in sacks in three of four years from 2020-2023 with the only outlier being in 2022 when he missed seven games due to injury.</p><p>The 30-year-old slowed a bit in 2024 with “just” 11.5 sacks, but he still led the NFL in forced fumbles for the second time in his career. Watt has just one AP Defensive Player of the Year award but has finished in the Top 3 on three other occasions. He is not only one of his generation’s most dominant defensive players, he has all but secured a Hall of Fame spot before he turns 31.</p><h2><b>2. While they <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/steelers-news-ben-roethlisberger-derek-carr-worsened-aaron-rodgers-pittsburgh-odds">continue to be linked to Aaron Rodgers</a> in free agency, it remains to be seen what the future holds for him, and even if he does sign with the team, they could opt to select a quarterback prospect at some point in the draft to eventually become their future starter at the position.</p><p>If the Steelers want to truly land their quarterback of the future, they may have to use their first-round pick, the No. 21 overall selection, in order to bring in the sort of player they are looking for. When analyzing the board, Ben Solak of ESPN believes that Shedeur Sanders, Jaxson Dart, and Tyler Shough are the <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/draft2025/insider/story/_/id/44668889/2025-nfl-draft-32-teams-positions-picks-grades-predictions-needs" rel="noopener">three candidates</a> Pittsburgh could reasonably select with their first rounder.</p><p>“Of the three quarterbacks I consider reasonable picks at 21, Tyler Shough (Louisville) is the best stylistic fit for Arthur Smith’s offensive system,” Solak wrote for ESPN. “Jaxson Dart (Ole Miss) does have a wonderful go route/back-shoulder ball in his bag, which fits nicely with Metcalf and George Pickens’ play style at receiver. And Shedeur Sanders (Colorado) is simply the best prospect of the three. According to former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, he thinks that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/saints-rumors-what-albert-breer-is-hearing-from-derek-carrs-camp-about-mysterious-injury">Derek Carr’s injury</a> with the New Orleans Saints could throw a wrench in Pittsburgh’s plans.</p><p>With Carr set to potentially miss the entire 2025 campaign due to a shoulder injury, they could suddenly emerge as a suitor for Rodgers in a market that had been dwindled down to just the Steelers. While there’s no guarantee New Orleans would be interested in Rodgers, or that Rodgers would be interested in New Orleans, Roethlisberger thinks Carr’s injury makes them a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4j9O9jMlj_o&amp;t=1437s" rel="noopener">team worth watching</a>.</p><p>“My thought last week … was that, ‘Is there a chance that there’s a team out there that we don’t know about yet that has a quarterback that’s maybe is injured?’ Roethlisberger said on “Footbahlin With Ben Roethlisberger.” “Then what news did we learn this week? We learned that Derek Carr has a shoulder injury and may miss the whole season … That’s a new door that’s opened up in the saga.”</p><p>“Everyone was talking about Minnesota, that door we thought kind of closed. One of the reasons they could pull off a move like that is due to the Pittsburgh Steelers.</p><p>The Broncos own the No. 20 pick in the draft while the Steelers own pick No. 21. Pittsburgh is rumored to be in the mix to sign Aaron Rodgers as its new quarterback, however, a deal has yet to be reached.</p><p>Considering Rodgers’ age, many believe quarterback could be a real option for Pittsburgh, according to Field Yates of ESPN. That means another quarterback-needy team <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/draft2025/insider/story/_/id/44602684/2025-nfl-draft-trade-candidates-teams-deals-first-round-picks" rel="noopener">could attempt to jump</a> them by making a trade with Denver to acquire Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders or Ole Miss’ Jaxson Dart.</p><p>“The second reason involves the team picking directly behind the Broncos: the Steelers,” Yates wrote. “Pittsburgh still hasn’t signed Aaron Rodgers. Even if he joins the Steelers, he’ll be 42 years old in December. Pittsburgh knows it has to be mindful [of] its quarterback room for the future — but so do other teams. And as such, another QB-needy team could call Denver to get ahead of the Steelers to secure Shedeur Sanders or Jaxson Dart.”</p><p>Yates also points toward Denver having a solid roster overall and not having any immediate needs as a reason why the front office could elect to trade back. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/denver-broncos/broncos-7-round-2025-nfl-mock-draft-per-pff-simulator">Rumors suggest the Broncos could be</a> in the mix for a running back, which they can get later in the draft, or a wide receiver to give quarterback Bo Nix more to work with in the passing game.</p><p>“The Broncos strike me as a trade-down candidate for two reasons. First, this roster does not have many glaring needs,” Yates wrote. “The most popular position linked to Denver in this predraft process has been running back, which could easily be filled in a later round. (The Broncos have seven picks this year.) Wide receiver is another potential position to target, but there will be some talented pass catchers on Day 2. Whatever the case, former Steelers Pro Bowler Ryan Clark said he’s sick of the Aaron Rodgers rumors.</p><p>Clark <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlpjOl-zAjw&amp;t=522s" rel="noopener">laid out his feelings</a>, according to ESPN’s Get Up.</p><p>“It makes me sick to be honest,” Clark said. “Unless (general manager) Omar Khan of the Pittsburgh Steelers has some sort of promise or some sort of lean on Aaron Rodgers. Believing that he is going to come back and play football. And if he does make that decision, he’s going to be a Pittsburgh Steeler. I feel like this has been mishandled already.”</p><h2><b>Ryan Clark said Steelers need to be firm with Aaron Rodgers</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Former-Pittsburgh-Steelers-DB-Ryan-Clark.jpg"><figcaption>Jay Biggerstaff-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Clark expressed his displeasure about the way Rodgers seems to be dragging the Steelers along, with a possible letdown at the end.</p><p>“To be waiting or to be held hostage by a former quarterback of the New York Jets, who has actually never done anything for you,” Clark said. “What has Aaron Rodgers done in the last two years, or since leaving Green Bay that says he should be afforded this type of time? That says you should give him the sort of respect that keeps your franchise at bay.”</p><p>Clark doesn’t have a lot of love for Rodgers, and vice-versa. Rodgers, <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2024/12/19/aaron-rodgers-ryan-clark-beef-jets-espn/77082926007/" rel="noopener">in his typical</a> I’m-superior-to-you way, criticized anybody who expressed an opinion on ESPN.</p><p>“The ‘SportsCenter’ of my youth, those guys made highlights so much fun, and that’s what they showed,” Rodgers said. “Now it’s all talk shows and people whose opinions are so important now, and they believe they’re the celebrities now.</p><p>“There’s a lot of people talking about the game now, both non-former players and former players who are trying to stay relevant fame-wise. So the takes and the criticism I think are a lot different than they were maybe in the mid-2000s.</p><p>“I’m talking about these experts on TV who nobody remembers what they did in their career. So in order for them to stay relevant, they have to make comments that keep them in the conversation.”</p><p>But Clark laid Rodgers bare <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2024/12/19/aaron-rodgers-ryan-clark-beef-jets-espn/77082926007/" rel="noopener">in later comments</a>, according to usatoday.com.</p><p>“My issue with him is you’re doing the exact same thing,” Clark said. “And the reason you’re getting this opportunity to say these asinine things is because someone is paying you who is exactly the same thing that you’re now speaking out against.”</p><p>“This dude is a fraud. He’s been a fraud. He can throw a football and that’s where it stops. Once that talent ends … so does he. That’s 9 of the 30 visits,” Steelers reporter for the <i>Pittsburgh Post-Gazette</i> Brian Batko said on X, formerly Twitter. “Only top-tier guys not to come through are Ashton Jeanty and Quinshon Judkins.”</p><p>Batko made the post following the announcement that two backs were visiting the Steelers on Tuesday. Those two players are former UCF rusher RJ Harvey, and Ohio State tailback TreVeyon Henderson.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/pittsburgh-steelers-3-sleeper-prospects-target-2025-nfl-draft">Steelers currently hold the 21st overall pick in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft</a>. Pittsburgh made the playoffs in 2024, before losing in the Wild Card Round to the Baltimore Ravens.</p><h2><b>The Steelers have a lot of questions on offense right now</b></h2><p>Pittsburgh’s running backs will play a large role in the offense this season. That is because the Steelers don’t know who their starting quarterback will be. Justin Fields left to go to the New York Jets, while veteran Russell Wilson signed a deal with the New York Giants.</p><p>Pittsburgh did sign a quarterback in Mason Rudolph, who is reuniting with the team. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/nfl-rumors-steelers-linked-kirk-cousins-trade-aaron-rodgers-catch">The Steelers are also chatting and flirting with veteran Aaron Rodgers</a>, who is a free agent looking to sign with a team. The squad has also reportedly expressed interest in drafting a play caller. With everything on standby right now for Pittsburgh, rumors are swirling that the front office could elect to trade for Atlanta Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins.</p><p>With Rodgers yet to make his decision, the Steelers <a href="https://www.si.com/nfl/nfl-takeaways-unlikely-shedeur-sanders-goes-to-browns-giants#_i8f686nom" rel="noopener">were named as a possible trade suitor</a> for Cousins, according to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated. Although Pittsburgh seems to be the one team in the mix for Rodgers, they could view Cousins as a backup plan just in case the former Green Bay Packer and New York Jet go in a different direction.</p><p>“So where could Cousins go? I think Cleveland is a lot less likely now, but not completely impossible. The other team I’d pay attention to is the Pittsburgh Steelers if Aaron Rodgers decides not to go there. How he fits there, with the strong personalities in that locker room, and on offense in particular, is a fair question. But you don’t have to squint too hard to envision a marriage of convenience between two sides who, once the dust settles on Rodgers, may need each other.”</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/pittsburgh-steelers/steelers-news-mike-tomlin-comfortable-mason-rudolph-starter-aaron-rodgers">Steelers signed Mason Rudolph</a> back to the roster after he spent one season with the Tennessee Titans. It was a good sign that the franchise may actually acquire the four-time MVP winner. But since then, it’s been incredibly quiet despite the NFL Draft quickly approaching.</p><p>In comes Cousins, who is currently the backup quarterback for the Falcons. Atlanta has handed the reigns over to their 2024 first-round pick Michael Penix. Mike Tomlin and company are preparing for the NFL Draft coming up at the end of the month. On Monday, Pittsburgh <a href="https://x.com/Schultz_Report/status/1911791738773258252" rel="noopener">is visiting with</a> Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord ahead of the draft, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz.</p><p>“Several teams I’ve spoken with say he’s one of the more undervalued players in the entire draft — highlighting his prototypical NFL size, winning pedigree (see 21-point comeback vs Miami) and capacity to read coverage,” Schultz wrote of McCord.</p><p>McCord saw his football reputation turn around in 2024 in his first year at Syracuse. He led the nation in passing yards and led the Orange to a 10-3 season, including a stunning upset against Miami to close out the regular season.</p><p>McCord became a household name at Ohio State, where he started his college career. He was the full-time starter for the Buckeyes in 2023 on a team that just barely missed out on going to the College Football Playoff. Now, he could be an intriguing draft pick in the late rounds for the Steelers or another team.</p><p>Whether Rodgers’ decision will come before the draft remains to be seen, but the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/steelers-news-shedeur-sanders-visiting-aaron-rodgers-saga">Steelers would certainly like some clarity</a> on that front by the time they have to start making picks. Pittsburgh had a great 2024 season by all accounts. They won 10 games during the regular season, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/pittsburgh-steelers/steelers-news-pittsburgh-ties-cowboys-most-consecutive-seasons-without-losing-record">keeping Mike Tomlin’s streak of winning seasons alive</a>. The Steelers also made the playoffs, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/pittsburgh-steelers/steelers-most-to-blame-for-brutal-wild-card-loss-to-ravens">though they got bounced in the first round by the Baltimore Ravens</a>.</p><p>Now the Steelers need to do everything they can to try and get back to the playoffs in 2025. There’s one big problem, though — they don’t currently have a starting quarterback.</p><p>Both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields have left Pittsburgh for greener pastures — weirdly enough, they both ended up with New York teams.</p><p>Without Wilson and Fields, the Steelers have aggressively pursued veteran QB Aaron Rodgers. There is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/pittsburgh-steelers/steelers-rumors-insider-gives-optimistic-aaron-rodgers-update">plenty of smoke about Rodgers eventually signing with the Steelers</a>, but they <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/pittsburgh-steelers/steelers-rumors-ian-rapoport-makes-aaron-rodgers-declaration-amid-free-agency-wait">cannot afford to wait around for the 41-year-old veteran forever</a>.</p><p>If the Steelers do not get a deal done with Rodgers before the draft, they could end up selecting a quarterback to compete with Mason Rudolph.</p><p>Could the Steelers end up making a big trade during the 2025 NFL Draft? And if so, would they move up the board or trade down?</p><p>Let’s explore a pair of perfect trades the Steelers could make during the 2025 NFL Draft.</p><h2><b>Trade up: Steelers move up into Top 10 to snag a quarterback</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/full_fcc31b.jpg"></figure><p><b>Steelers receive: </b></p><ul><li>2025 first-round pick (8th overall)</li></ul><p><b>Panthers receive: </b></p><ul><li>2025 first-round pick (21st overall)</li><li>2025 fourth-round pick (123rd overall)</li><li>2026 second-round pick</li></ul><p>This would be far from the perfect scenario for Pittsburgh, but this could still be the perfect trade for the Steelers.</p><p>In this scenario, I envision that Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders is still on the board while the seventh overall pick is still on the clock. I am also envisioning a world where the Steelers are convinced that the Saints will select Sanders with the ninth overall pick.</p><p>One more assumption — in this scenario, the Steelers have yet to sign free-agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers.</p><p>The Steelers would really have to be in love with Sanders to make such a bold trade. Or perhaps it is more accurate to say they feel desperate enough to make this trade.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/pittsburgh-steelers/steelers-news-shedeur-sanders-visiting-aaron-rodgers-saga">Sanders did visit the Steelers on Tuesday</a>, so it is not a stretch to assume that Pittsburgh is interested in him.</p><p>While this does not look like a great move on paper, the Steelers have a full war chest of picks in 2026 (more on that in a minute). They can absolutely stomach giving up a future second-round pick if it means finding a starting quarterback.</p><p>Ultimately, this could end up being the smartest move the Steelers could make. They can only get so far with a strong roster if they do not have a competent quarterback steering the ship.</p><h2><b>Trade down: Steelers trade out of 1st round, acquire multiple Day 2 picks</b></h2><p><b>Steelers receive: </b></p><ul><li>2025 second-round pick (45th overall)</li><li>2025 third-round pick (80th overall)</li><li>2026 second-round pick</li><li>2026 third-round pick</li><li>2026 sixth-round pick</li></ul><p><b>Colts receive: </b></p><ul><li>2025 first-round pick (21st overall)</li></ul><p>The Steelers should also remain open-minded about trading out of the first round altogether.</p><p>The logic for trading out of the first round is pretty simple for teams at the bottom of the draft order. There are multiple QB-needy teams who might want to move up the board to get their guy in the first round. That way, they will get a fifth-year option on his rookie contract.</p><p>However, that is not the case right here. In this scenario, the Colts use their first-round pick on defensive end Shemar Stewart. Indianapolis then makes a bold trade offer with Pittsburgh, moving back up into the first round for tight end Colston Loveland.</p><p>While it is fascinating to consider what that could mean for the Colts, we should focus on the Steelers right now.</p><p>This is an ideal trade for Pittsburgh both now and in the future. Prior to this trade, Pittsburgh only had six selections in the 2025 NFL Draft. Trading down (theoretically) lowers the talent of the players they bring in, but it does give them an extra Day 2 pick.</p><p>Pittsburgh could get the best of both worlds if a quarterback they like (Tyler Shough? Jaxson Dart? Jalen Milroe?) falls to 45th overall.</p><p>This trade would set the Steelers up with a huge war chest of picks for the 2026 NFL Draft.</p><p>Pittsburgh is already <a href="https://stillcurtain.com/posts/steelers-draft-picks-in-2025-2026-beyond-full-list-01hzfc14048k" rel="noopener">projected to receive compensatory picks</a> in rounds three, four, five, and six. Adding Indianapolis’ 2026 picks would give Pittsburgh a total of 14 picks in the 2026 NFL Draft, six of which are in the first three rounds.</p><p>If the Steelers could pull off this trade, they’d have all the ammunition needed to trade up for a quarterback in the 2026 NFL Draft if they need to.</p><p>Pittsburgh should not blink if they get a trade offer like this on April 24th.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
