The 12th overall pick in the 2024 Draft will be the first rookie quarterback to start for the Broncos since John Elway did it in 1983. Nix’s preseason performance must have impressed coach Sean Payton enough to give him the job, but not every Bronco felt the same. For instance, Jarrett Stidham didn’t hesitate to make his feelings known about losing the job to Bo Nix.</p><p>“I mean, first of all, obviously I was very disappointed,” Stidham told the press, as reported by Andrew Mason on X, formerly Twitter. “I know I’m a starting quarterback in this league. I have zero doubts about that. And it just didn’t shake out that way. But I know what kind of player I am, kind of person I am. And like I said earlier, I’ll be ready to go if I need to be. After all, coach Payton said he expects him, Nix, and fellow quarterback Zach Wilson to make the team’s final 53-man roster.</p><p>Both Stidham and Wilson might just have to learn to play behind Nix. However, it’s easy to understand Stidham’s sentiments, considering his play in the preseason. As starter, he led the team to a 1-1 record, where he completed 60.6% of his passes for 496 yards, notching two touchdowns compared to one interception.</p><p>However, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bo-nix-grading-2024-nfl-draft-landing-spot-broncos">Broncos drafted Nix</a> and then <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jets-news-new-york-trades-zach-wilson-broncos">traded for Wilson</a>, challenging Stidham to compete for the starting quarterback spot he had worked for in 2023.</p><p>Meanwhile, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl-draft-news-jets-select-zach-wilson-with-no-2-pick">former No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson</a> finished 16-25 for 251 yards against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. He also protected the ball, logging zero turnovers, and recorded three touchdowns.</p><p>However, in his preseason debut, Bo Nix was sensational. He helped the Broncos overcome the Indianapolis Colts 34-30, completing 15 of 21 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown.</p><p>In their second game, the rookie also completed eight of nine passes for 80 yards and another touchdown, as the Broncos demolished the Green Bay Packers 27-2. This impressive play should have earned enough of Payton’s trust to throw him into the fire next season.</p><p>Jarrett Stidham’s situation with Bo Nix and the starting quarterback position isn’t new, though. In a field as competitive as professional sports, nothing is guaranteed, and you can just as easily lose your spot after working hard for it, especially when a superb player comes onboard. But just because the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/broncos-news-coach-sean-payton-sheds-light-on-bo-nixs-place-in-qb-competition-amid-otas">Broncos have a shiny new</a> rookie doesn’t mean he will be automatically guaranteed the starting spot.</p><p>Especially if Jarrett Stidham has anything to say about it. Entering his second season in Denver, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/broncos-news-jarrett-stidham-favored-to-be-qb1-for-denver-in-2024">Stidham is looking to hold</a> onto the starting role that he gained at the start of the 2023 season. Even if that <a href="https://www.denverbroncos.com/news/we-re-rotating-all-of-them-hc-sean-payton-details-early-stages-of-broncos-quarterback-competition" rel="noopener">means beating out</a> Nix in training camp, via team reporter Aric DiLalla.</p><p>“I’ve dealt with this before when I was in New England with Mac Jones,” Stidham said. “It’s a business and I totally understand it, but at the same time, I’m here to compete. I’m not going to just sit down and let someone else walk in here and just [take the role]. I’m going to work my butt off to get the job. I’m super excited about it.”</p><p>Stidham went 1-1 in his two game stretch as a starter. He threw for 496 yards, two touchdowns in an interceptions. The quarterback was sacked seven times in his second start, perhaps deflecting some of the blame from the 27-14 season-ending loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.</p><p>But Stidham is now entering the 2024 rejuvenated and ready to prove himself. In year two of Sean Payton’s tenure, the head coach now has experience working with Stidham. The QB is hopeful his incumbent status will give him a leg up in the QB1.</p><p>But he’ll be facing stiff competition.</p><h2><b>Jarrett Stidham entering fierce Broncos QB battle </b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Broncos-Jarrett-Stidham.jpg"><figcaption>Isaiah J. However, JJ McCarthy – the fourth QB selected – came off the board just two picks earlier. With their need of a quarterback in mind, Denver invested their future in Nix.</p><p>Ever since selecting him, Payton has done nothing <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/broncos-news-bo-nix-sean-payton-feeling-like-he-has-his-patrick-mahomes">but hype up Nix</a>. He said he liked him as much as he did Patrick Mahomes when the Kansas City Chiefs star was entering the NFL. Still, Payton isn’t going to just hand him the QB1 role. At the start of voluntary OTAs, Nix, Stidham and Zach Wilson <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/40205173/sean-payton-praises-all-three-qbs-competing-broncos-job" rel="noopener">were all splitting reps</a>, via Jeff Legwold of ESPN.</p><p>“We try to split up all the reps,” Payton said. “There’s going to be a time when you read into reps. I don’t think it’s early in OTAs. It’s kind of the orphan group, they’re all orphan dogs. They’ve come from somewhere, but they’re doing good. It’s a good room.”</p><p>Still, Nix will have plenty of time to steal the QB1 role come training camp. The Broncos were surely impressed with his work at the college level, as he threw for 15,352 yards 113 yards and 26 touchdowns. In his fifth overall season and second with Oregon, Nix won the Pac-12 Player of the Year after throwing for 4,508 yards, 45 touchdowns and three interceptions.</p><p>By taking him at No. 12, Denver is serious about Bo Nix being the team’s quarterback of the future. But in the short-term, Jarrett Stidham is hoping his veteran superiority wins out. Going just 1-3 as a starter, Stidham has thrown for 1,422 yards, eight touchdowns and eight interceptions over his four-year NFL career.</p><p>The only thing certain in Denver as that a different QB will be under center come Week 1. That was suggested when they benched starting quarterback Russell Wilson last year and it was assured when they sent him off the ranch at the start of free agency. The Broncos have a chance to make a move at QB1 in free agency or the draft, but for now, Jarrett Stidham will fill that position.</p><p>There are a number of prominent free agent quarterbacks who will be available to talk with March 11 and sign two days later at the start of the league year. However, Stidham is listed as the top choice to start when the Broncos open the season in September, <a href="https://www.betonline.ag/sportsbook/futures-and-props/nfl-regular-season/starting-qb" rel="noopener">according to BetOnline</a>.</p><p>Stidham is listed as the +175 favorite and he is followed by any rookie quarterback at +225. The website lists five quarterbacks with equal odds of +700 to become the Denver starter. They include Justin Fields, Ryan Tannehill, Gardner Minshew, Jameis Winston and Sam Howell. Kirk Cousins, the highest-rated quarterback who should also be available at the start of the league year, is a longshot at +1400.</p><p>Jarrett Stidham did a solid job for <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/perfect-nfl-trade-broncos-must-complete-2024-offseason" rel="noopener">the Broncos</a> after Wilson was benched. He completed 40 of 66 passes for 496 yards with 2 TD passes and 1 interception. The 6-3, 215 pound Stidham was a fourth-round draft choice by the New England Patriots in 2019. He played his college football at Auburn</p><p>Broncos coach Sean Payton appears to have several options open at this point, but it was clear he preferred Stidham over Wilson. Fourth-year QB Jarrett Stidham won his first game as a starter. As a result, Stidham’s wife Kennedy sang his praises after the big win.</p><h2><b>Jarrett Stidham receives high praise after Broncos’ win against Los Angeles</b></h2><p>Stidham displayed a solid command of the offense <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/broncos-news-mixed-bag-injury-updates-jerry-jeudy-marvin-mims-jr" rel="noopener">against the Chargers</a> on Sunday. The 27-year-old finished the game with 224 yards and one touchdown. His poise played a vital role in Denver’s win and his first victory as a starter. His wife posted <a href="https://thespun.com/nfl/afc-west/denver-broncos/jarrett-stidhams-wife-reacts-to-husbands-first-career-nfl-win" rel="noopener">a heartwarming message</a> after the QB’s breakout:</p><p>The post read, “Last home game, first start in the orange and blue, first career win!!,” per The Spun (h/t Kennedy Stidham’s Instagram account).</p><p>Jarrett Stidham’s wife has good reason to be proud of him. Stidham was a late fourth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. He spent two seasons with the New England Patriots before going to the Las Vegas Raiders. Then, Denver signed him in the spring of 2023.</p><p>If the former Auburn Tiger continues to play the way he did against the Chargers, he will have a permanent home with the Broncos.</p><p>Denver has astonishingly turned its season around after a poor start. The team is in second place in the AFC West standings and is back at the .500 mark. The Broncos have been eliminated from the playoffs, but that will not stop them from making an effort in the final matchup of the season.</p><p>On January 7th, Denver will conclude its 2023-24 season against the Raiders in Las Vegas. But as Stidham prepares for his first <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/broncos-news-jarrett-stidham-on-becoming-denvers-new-qb1" rel="noopener">start with the Broncos</a>, one of Denver’s pass catchers won’t be available to him.</p><p>Courtland Sutton <a href="https://twitter.com/AdamSchefter/status/1740840223955886190" rel="noopener">has been ruled out</a> with a concussion, via Adam Schefter of ESPN. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/broncos-news-courtland-sutton-suffers-scary-head-injury-amid-snf-vs-patriots" rel="noopener">Sutton suffered his concussion</a> in the first quarter of Denver’s Week 16 matchup against the New England Patriots.</p><p>Losing Sutton will be a big slow to the Broncos’ passing attack, no matter who is playing quarterback. He leads the team in receptions (58), yards (770) and touchdowns (10). He is the only player on the team with 50+ receptions and 5+ touchdowns. Only Jerry Jeudy has 500+ receiving yards alongside Sutton.</p><p>While they’re 7-8, the Broncos haven’t officially been eliminated from postseason contention. Still, head coach Sean Payton decided to make a quarterback change from Wilson to Stidham. Despite his demotion, Wilson <a href="https://twitter.com/JFowlerESPN/status/1740842818912870668" rel="noopener">will still be active</a> as Stidham’s backup in Week 17, via Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.</p><p>Stidham has made two starts at the NFL level, losing both of them. He has made 14 appearances overall since joining the league in 2019, throwing for 926 yards, six touchdowns and seven interceptions.</p><p>Denver’s offense is sure to undergo plenty of changes by virtue of changing QBs. But without Courtland Sutton it could be difficult for Jarrett Stidham to find his groove. The Broncos are giving him an audition to see if he could be a potential quarterback option moving forward. But with Russell Wilson <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/broncos-news-why-denver-considering-benching-russell-wilson-remainder-2023-season" rel="noopener">being abruptly benched</a>, Stidham is suddenly QB1 for the Denver Broncos.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/best-russell-wilson-destinations-broncos-benching" rel="noopener">The benching of Wilson</a> consumed a majority of the NFL’s headlines when the news broke. But little was being mentioned of Wilson’s successor, Stidham. And honestly, that’s kind of how he prefers it, as it is just going to be another normal week of preparation for him. He has no plans to change how he prepares despite suddenly being the starting quarterback.</p><p>“I think it just goes back to preparing like I have been throughout my entire career,” Stidham <a href="https://www.denverbroncos.com/news/i-m-just-going-to-do-my-job-jarrett-stidham-keeping-small-focus-ahead-of-first-s">said.</a> “Nothing this week changes now that I’m a starter vs. a backup last week. I’ve had my routine that I stick with that I know gets me prepared, gets me ready to play, and that’s what I’m going to do.”</p><p>As much as he wants to downplay the situation, he <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/broncos-news-playoff-scenarios-benching-russell-wilson-for-jarrett-stidham" rel="noopener">still has a good opportunity</a> ahead of him. The move certainly <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/broncos-news-jerry-jeudy-shock-russell-wilson-benching" rel="noopener">came as a surprise</a> to many folks, and after the news went public, Wilson <a href="https://twitter.com/DangeRussWilson/status/1740223465708470604" rel="noopener">broke the silence</a> on Denver’s shocking decision.</p><p>Via Russell Wilson:</p><p>“God’s got me. Looking forward to what’s next.”</p><p>The Broncos opened the 2023 campaign by losing five of their first six games, but then proceeded to rattle off wins in six of their next seven games. Just when it seemed like they were a serious playoff threat, the Detroit Lions blew them out in Week 15 and then the New England Patriots upset the Broncos in Week 16. While they are still technically alive in the postseason hunt, the Broncos have seen enough from Wilson.</p><p>There are a lot of unique factors that have gone into this decision, but it has reportedly been clear to Wilson for some time now that his time with the Broncos was likely coming to an end. As a result, he’s doing his best to take the move in stride, although it’s obviously going to be tough for a quarterback of his stature to come to terms with getting benched while his team still has a shot at making the playoffs.</p><p>With Wilson headed to the bench, Stidham will be taking over under center, and he flashed at times last season when filling in for Derek Carr in a similar situation with the Las Vegas Raiders. Asking Stidham to hit a Hail Mary or two is one thing. But even if that happens, the team will need some serious help along the way.</p><p><a href="https://twitter.com/TomPelissero/status/1740101333519311079" rel="noopener">The easiest path</a> to the postseason for Sean Payton’s squad is straightforward, albeit unlikely. If <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/broncos-news-why-denver-considering-benching-russell-wilson-remainder-2023-season" rel="noopener">the Stidham-led Broncos</a> can win their final two games of the season, and the Kansas City Chiefs lose their remaining two games, it’s on, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.</p><p>In that scenario, the Broncos and Chiefs would both finish the season with a 9-8 record, and by virtue of the divisional record tiebreaker, the Broncos would win the AFC West.</p><p>If the above doesn’t take place, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/broncos-news-sean-payton-denver-not-focusing-on-slim-playoff-chances" rel="noopener">Broncos begin to rely</a> on some long odds to sneak in via a wild-card berth.</p><h2><b>Broncos put out help wanted ad</b></h2><p>Before detailing any scenarios further, it’s important to note that for Denver to make the playoffs, they must defeat the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 17 and the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 18. Slip up in either game and it’s game over for the Broncos.</p><p>Considering the team just benched its $245 million quarterback in favor of Stidham, that doesn’t even feel like a given.</p><p>But for the sake of argument, let’s grant that Stidham and Co. handle their business. In the simplest form, a Chiefs/Buffalo Bills/Pittsburgh Steelers trifecta of victories would end Denver’s season, for instance, although there are other variations as well in play.</p><p>For those hoping the Broncos manage to secure the AFC’s sixth-seed (still mathematically possible!), good luck.</p><p>That would involve the Broncos losing out, the Bills losing out, and the Steelers losing out, in addition to help from the Cincinnati Bengals and the entire AFC South.</p><p>In other words, don’t get your hopes up Denver fans, even if you’ve been pining for Jarrett Stidham.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

So, quietly that was an important sign for us.”</p><p>Making reference to Stidham as a potential NFL starter will provide a boost of confidence for the young quarterback, especially after being signed as a backup. It will remain a comment to remember if Wilson begins the season with similar struggles as last year.</p><p>Wilson is coming off of arguably the worst year of his career, and was embroiled in controversy for his presence off of the field as well. Teaming up with Payton could easily return him to form, but he has to be feeling the pressure given the comments from his new coach.</p><p>Stidham comes to Denver fresh off of a season in Las Vegas, so he is no stranger to controversy. He is hoping to play for a team this season that remains in the headlines for good reasons.</p><p>One thing is for sure, expectations will be high in Denver come fall. Sean Payton’s arrival and Russell Wilson’s pedigree, notwithstanding a tough 2022, are reasons to believe the Broncos will want to compete for the AFC West. He completed 23 of his 34 passes for 365 yards and three touchdowns, helping the Raiders respond to everything the 49ers throw at them.</p><p>Sure, Stidham’s interception in OT that led to the 49ers’ 37-34 win was quite disappointing. However, as his Raiders teammate in Jacobs said, that <a href="https://twitter.com/PGutierrezESPN/status/1609729874121609217" rel="noopener">shouldn’t overshadow</a> the incredible showing he had.</p><p>“Obviously, that’s one of the best defenses, if not the best defense, in the league. So for him to go out there and do what he did, I feel like that’s speaking to his campaign as ‘The Guy,'” Jacobs shared, per Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.</p><p>Jarrett Stidham certainly impressed despite the fact that the loss officially eliminated them from playoff contention, and it’s safe to say he exceeded the team’s expectations. The 26-year-old started in place of Derek Carr, who was benched amid his struggles throughout the year.</p><p>It remains to be seen what will happen next after this 2022 season, but there’s no doubt Stidham earned himself more chance to play and potentially become a starting QB in the league.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

This is an opportunity that doesn’t come along easily. I’m excited for him personally. I think he’s done a good job of handling practice the last two days. I think the team has done a tremendous job of working with him.”</p><p>“I’ve no delusions of grandeur in terms of this is going to be perfect,” McDaniels continued. “It wouldn’t matter who we’re playing with, against this defense it wouldn’t be perfect, but we’re going to strive to do our best.”</p><p>While Stidham has yet to start an NFL game, he has appeared in 11 total over his three-year career. He has 342 passing yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions to his name. In three years at the college level, Stidham threw for 7,217 yards, 48 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.</p><p>With the Raiders season essentially over, Josh McDaniels wants to see what he has in Stidham. The Jarrett Stidham era begins and only time will tell how long it’s going to last. But for now, the backup QB has been thrust into the spotlight with the first crack at the job.</p><p>The fact that it comes at the expense of Derek Carr brings Stidham no joy, as he <a href="https://www.reviewjournal.com/sports/raiders/jarrett-stidham-relishes-opportunity-as-raiders-starting-qb-2702267/" rel="noopener">made sure to credit</a> the veteran QB in his address to the media on Thursday, via Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal:</p><p>“I can’t thank him enough for everything that he’s helped me with, personally and professionally,” said Stidham of Carr.</p><p>Stidham spoke out on taking on the challenge starting with a Week 17 tilt against the San Francisco 49ers, who themselves have found success with a backup taking over at QB in rookie Brock Purdy.</p><p>“Obviously, you dream of playing in the NFL as a kid, and to start a game in the NFL is a dream come true,” Jared Stidham said. “But at the same time, I’ve been preparing since my rookie year, and I’ve tried to prepare every single week whether I was the backup or the starter. Obviously, I’ve gotten to learn under a bunch of really good guys. Players, coaches. I’ve always tried to treat the weeks the same, and this is no different.”</p><p>Jarrett Stidham made the move from New England to Las Vegas after his Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniel was named head coach of the Raiders. The opportunity he waited patiently for under Bill Belichick never came in his three years there. Carr has <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/derek-carr-leaves-raiders-after-being-benched-for-week-17" rel="noopener">even left the team</a> to avoid being a distraction as the Raiders explore trade options in the offseason, although the possibility of staying isn’t off the table, either.</p><p>As the organization heads into a new direction with Stidham under center, he’s already got the support of his teammates. Star tight end Darren Waller spoke out on Stidham stepping in as QB1 and made it clear: Everyone believes in him.</p><p>“The only thing that’s productive <a href="https://www.reviewjournal.com/sports/raiders/raiders-teammates-say-jarrett-stidham-ready-for-opportunity-2701500/" rel="noopener">is to support Jarrett going forward</a>,” Waller said Wednesday, via Adam Hill of the <i>Las Vegas Review-Journal</i>. “We’re rallying around him and letting him know we believe in him and doing what we can to prepare for San Francisco.</p><p>“I think he’s ready, and I think he’s going about it in a way that’s unique to him,” Waller said. “He’s not trying to be anybody else or be too rah-rah or too loud. He speaks when he thinks he needs to and jokes with guys, picks them up. He has the personality to go out there and do well.</p><p>“I see him locked in, as he has been throughout the season. Makes a lot of good throws, and guys have been excited for him and his overall knowledge of the system.”</p><p>It’s certainly surprising to see Derek Carr get benched, but it’s clear a change needed to be made with Vegas sitting at 6-9. Stidham has only taken 13 snaps in 2022, completing 61.5% of his passes for 72 yards. Needless to say, a small sample size. He’ll get the opportunity to prove himself and hopefully find some immediate chemistry with the likes of Waller and Davante Adams.</p><p>As for Waller, he’s been limited to seven games this season, reeling in 23 receptions for 281 yards and two scores. Stidham’s first start of the campaign won’t be easy as the Raiders face the high-flying San Francisco 49ers in Week 17.</p><p> </p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The team also still employs longtime backup Brian Hoyer to provide a veteran voice in the QB room. That left little reason for Stidham to stick around.</p><p>In three seasons with the Patriots, Jarrett Stidham played in just eight total contests. He threw for 270 yards garnering two touchdowns. He joins a Raiders QB room that doesn’t have much room either.
