Richardson is <a href="https://x.com/RomeovilleKid/status/1845897763248079004" rel="noopener">on track to return</a> for the Colts’ matchup with the Miami Dolphins after missing two games with an oblique injury, according to James Boyd of The Athletic.</p><p>“Unless there’s a setback, yeah, I think he’ll be ready to go,” Colts head coach Shane Steichen said, per Boyd.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/colts-news-joe-flacco-draws-week-6-start-indianapolis-amid-anthony-richardson-injury">Joe Flacco has been starting in relief of Richardson</a> and has done an admirable job. The Colts offense is averaging 27 points per game in Flacco’s two starts, which they split with a loss against the Jacksonville Jaguars and a win over the Tennessee Titans.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/teams-that-should-trade-for-joe-flacco-after-latest-dominant-outing-for-colts">Flacco earned praise for the good football</a> that he played in the two starts, plus his relief appearance after Richardson went down against the Colts. In nearly three games, the longtime veteran threw for 716 yards and seven touchdowns with just one interception.</p><p>Richardson’s numbers aren’t quite as good as his journeyman counterpart. His rawness as a passer has shown this season, as inaccuracy and poor decision making have plagued the Florida product during his second season. In just over four games, Richardson has thrown for 654 yards and three touchdowns with six interceptions.</p><p>The benefit of starting Richardson, of course, is what he adds in the running game. Steichen can go to his young quarterback as a runner in short yardage situations, and his combination of size and athleticism makes him a handful to stop. For the season, he has 141 yards on 21 carries with one touchdown.</p><p>Adding Richardson back into the lineup costs the running game, and so would the return of star running back Jonathan Taylor. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/colts-news-jonathan-taylor-ruled-out-for-week-6">Taylor has missed the last two games</a> with an ankle injury. While Richardson practiced during the week and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/colts-qb-anthony-richardsons-week-6-status-gets-more-clarity">was preparing to give it a go</a>, he wasn’t fully ready to start.</p><p>The Colts <a href="https://x.com/JFowlerESPN/status/1845491468166709681" rel="noopener">made the decision early Sunday</a> to give Richardson one more week off as the starter after he went through pregame tests, per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. However, the youngster will act as the emergency No. 3 quarterback behind Flacco and Sam Ehlinger, so he could still see the field if absolutely needed.</p><p>Flacco has been terrific in relief of Richardson so far this season, throwing for 527 yards and five touchdowns to zero interceptions across two games. The 39-year-old took over when <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/colts-news-anthony-richardson-breaks-silence-hip-injury-vs-steelers">Richardson initially suffered his injury</a> in Week 4 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Flacco led Indianapolis to a 27-24 victory by throwing for 168 yards and two touchdowns.</p><p>Last week, Flacco put up monster numbers and nearly <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/colts-news-joe-flaccos-heroics-catch-eye-kevin-durant">pulled off an improbable comeback</a> against the lowly Jacksonville Jaguars. The veteran threw for 359 yards and three touchdowns as the Colts scored 24 fourth-quarter points. Unfortunately, the end result was a heartbreaking 37-34 defeat as Indianapolis’ defense struggled. The Jaguars scored their first win of the season despite Flacco’s best efforts, which included 22 yards rushing.</p><p>The Colts are hoping the 39-year-old can continue his magic. Indianapolis is 2-3 on the season and looking to score a win against another struggling squad in Tennessee. The Titans are just 1-3 on the year and have been dealing with quarterback issues of their own. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/reasons-titans-must-continue-believing-will-levis">Will Levis has been bad to start Year 2</a> and has also dealt with an injury, so this is a big opportunity for Flacco and the Colts to pick up a much-needed road win.</p><p>If Flacco does play well in a win, it’ll be interesting to see if there’s any conversation about keeping him as the starter even when Richardson is healthy. The 39-year-old quarterback has become something of a hot commodity recently, as even at his age, he’s still <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/colts-news-joe-flaccos-heroics-catch-eye-kevin-durant">performing at a high level</a> and winning games.</p><p>Flacco made his first start of the season this past weekend in a 37-34 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars for the Indianapolis Colts. It was his second appearance of the year after filling in for Anthony Richardson during Week 4 when the second-year quarterback went down with a hip injury. Flacco helped lead the comeback, beating the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-24, which revived all the Joe Flacco starter talk from last season.</p><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Indianapolis-Colts-QB-Joe-Flacco.jpg"><figcaption>Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>It came as a bit of a surprise that the Colts reportedly made the only offseason offer to Flacco. Last season, he became the talk of the NFL during his resurgent year with the Cleveland Browns, filling in for Deshaun Watson, who went down with a season-ending shoulder injury. The 17-year veteran went 4-1, ultimately helping the Browns—who had every excuse not to—make the playoffs.</p><p>Considering that Flacco’s career had been on the downside after leaving the Baltimore Ravens in 2019, the team that drafted him in 2008, his performances last season were nothing short of miraculous. They were so impressive, in fact, that he won the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year award.</p><p>Flacco decided to give it another shot this season. But Colts’ coach Shane Steichen has already <a href="https://x.com/MySportsUpdate/status/1843358749228138994" rel="noopener">stated</a> that once Richardson gets healthy, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/colts-shane-steichen-stands-by-anthony-richardson-despite-joe-flaccos-strong-week-5-outing">he’ll return as the starter</a>, according to Ari Meirov. So, does this mean the Colts will decide to trade Flacco before the Nov. 5 deadline? If so, here are a couple of teams that would likely be interested in the former Super Bowl-winning quarterback.</p><h2><b>Cleveland Browns</b></h2><p>The most obvious team that should be vying for Joe Flacco’s services is the Cleveland Browns—the team he helped lead to the playoffs last year. Deshaun Watson, returning from last year’s injury, has been downright abysmal through five games, with fans calling for his immediate benching. That would leave Jameis Winston as the next option, followed by Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who played some during Watson’s absence last season.</p><p>Are these better options? Winston, a former first-round pick, has shown flashes of being productive in the past, but there’s just as much uncertainty with him as there is with Watson. If Flacco were traded back to Cleveland, he’d be working under new offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey, unlike last season under Alex Van Pelt, who was fired during the offseason.</p><h2><b>Miami Dolphins</b></h2><p>The Dolphins notched just their second win of the season in Week 5, defeating a struggling New England Patriots team. Since losing Tua Tagovailoa in Week 2 to a concussion, the Dolphins’ offense has ground to a halt. Over the last three games, they’re averaging just 10 points per game, the second-worst in the league during that stretch.</p><p>Miami’s quarterback issues don’t stop with Tagovailoa. They also lost Skylar Thompson to a rib injury in Week 3 against the Seattle Seahawks. Now, they’re down to Tyler Huntley, whom they recently signed off the Ravens’ practice squad on Sept. 17. Considering the situation with Tagovailoa’s unfortunate injury, along with Thompson’s, coach Mike McDaniel might not be on the hot seat, even if things do continue to spiral. However, adding a veteran like Joe Flacco could inject some life into the offense and give the Dolphins a much-needed boost.</p><h2><b>Las Vegas Raiders</b></h2><p>Antonio Pierce and the Raiders missed out on drafting a valuable first-round quarterback in this year’s NFL draft, leaving them to settle for Gardner Minshew and Aidan O’Connell for this season. Minshew began the season as the starter but has struggled out of the gate. He was eventually benched for O’Connell in last week’s 34-18 loss to the Denver Broncos, where he threw a pick-six on a first-and-goal from the Denver 5-yard line. So far, Minshew has thrown four touchdowns to five interceptions this season.</p><p>O’Connell doesn’t appear to be the answer either. Filling in for Minshew, he completed just 50% of his passes and threw an interception of his own. Flacco could potentially revive this struggling Raiders offense and even help ease the tensions between star receiver Davante Adams and head coach Antonio Pierce.</p><h2><b>Tennessee Titans</b></h2><p>Will Levis struggled mightily leading up to Week 4’s <i>Monday Night Football</i> matchup against the Dolphins. The second-year quarterback had made several questionable decisions in the first four games that led to costly turnovers. During that game, Levis went down with a shoulder injury and was replaced by former Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph.</p><p>Levis’ status for Week 6 against, ironically, the Colts, remains questionable, leaving Rudolph at the helm. In the win over the likewise quarterback-starved Dolphins, Rudolph went 9-for-17 for 85 yards to secure a 31-12 victory. However, if Levis is out for an extended period, it leaves the Titans with just one quarterback on the roster.</p><p>While Rudolph may manage for the short term, head coach Brian Callahan believes there’s more potential in this season in his first year. At 1-3, the AFC South—excluding the Texans—remains wide open. He studied journalism and communication at UConn.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NFL</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen <a href="https://x.com/MySportsUpdate/status/1843358749228138994" rel="noopener">made it clear</a> on Monday that Anthony Richardson will be the starting quarterback when he is fully healthy after Joe Flacco’s impressive performance against the Jacksonville Jaguars, according to Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/colts-news-joe-flaccos-heroics-catch-eye-kevin-durant">The Colts suffered</a> a 37-34 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, but Joe Flacco had a great day, completing 33-of-44 passes for 359 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Anthony Richardson still is the future of the franchise though, as he was the No. 4 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Richardson has struggled as a passer, but has flashed upside with deep throws and his running ability. Being the younger player than Flacco, it makes sense for Richardson to stay the starting quarterback when he returns from injury. Hopefully, he can develop into that franchise quarterback that the Colts expect.</p><p>Leading up to the game against the Jaguars, it was known <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/colts-news-anthony-richardson-listed-as-doubtful-for-week-5">that Richardson was</a> increasingly unlikely to play. Flacco did a great job filling in, and if the Colts’ defense had performed better, they could have come out with a win to advance to 3-2 on the season. It will be worth monitoring reports throughout the week to see if Richardson will be healthy enough for the next game.</p><h2><b>Colts look to rebound with Anthony Richardson hopefully returning</b></h2><p>The next few weeks present opportunities for the Colts to add wins. This upcoming week, Indianapolis will go on the road to play the division rival Tennessee Titans. Interestingly enough, the status of quarterback Will Levis is in question for that game as well. Regardless, the Colts very well could get back into the win column against a Titans team that does not look very good.</p><p>The Titans’ lone win came against an undermanned Miami Dolphins team without Tua Tagovailoa, which happens to be the team that the Colts will play the week after this upcoming game against the Titans. Tagovailoa will not be eligible to return for that game either. If the Colts play up to their capabilities, they could end up at 4-3 on the season.</p><p>With the Houston Texans off to a hot start this season and seemingly the favorites in the AFC South, it will be interesting to see if the Colts can catch up to them. If not, it will be interesting to see if the Colts are able to stay in the Wild Card race. The performance of the Indianapolis Colts’ veteran <a href="https://x.com/KDTrey5/status/1843017630804058284" rel="noopener">caught the eye</a> of NBA superstar Kevin Durant, according to a post on X.</p><p>“Put Flacco anywhere and he’s gonna hoop.”</p><p>Also, Flacco had this impressive scramble <a href="https://x.com/andrewsteeled/status/1843012615104278886" rel="noopener">and a 21-yard gain</a> via a post on X by Andrew Steele.</p><p>Flacco heroics weren’t enough as the Colts fell short in a 37-34 decision against the Jaguars. Still, he completed 33 of 44 passes for 359 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. He directed 42- and 45-second scoring drives to rally the Colts from a 14-point deficit, and into a late-game tie.</p><h2><b>Colts QB Joe Flacco turns back the clock, again</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Indianapolis-Colts-QB-Joe-Flacco.jpg"><figcaption>Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>It has happened a time or two in a 17-year career. Flacco came off the underdog heap and made things happen. Even though Flacco didn’t lead his team to victory this time, he’s <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUPY--gZwh8" rel="noopener">been around the block</a> and understands it, according to the Colts’ YouTube page.</p><p>“It’s one of those games that end up being, you know, kind of you want the ball last,” Flacco said. “But (Colts head coach) Shane (Steichen) said this is the NFL. You’re going to play games like this. You’ve got to be able to dig deep and find ways to win. You just need to have a chance at the end.”</p><p>The battle lasted throughout for the Colts, Flacco said.</p><p>“They did a good job of making us go the long, hard way,” he said. “I think we had a 16-play drive for one of those touchdowns. That’s not the easiest way to do it.”</p><p>For the Jaguars, the victory couldn’t have felt much better. They entered the game 0-4 and in desperation mode just one-fourth of the way through the season. Jaguars defensive end Josh Hines-Allen said he hoped this would be the <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/recap/_/gameId/401671633" rel="noopener">right matchup for his team</a>, according to espn.com.</p><p>“I kind of know we don’t lose to them, so I’m like, ‘Good timing, good timing,'” Hines-Allen said.</p><p>As for the Colts, Steichen couldn’t quite find the words to make it wrap up in a neat bow. The Colts haven’t won in Jacksonville since 2014.</p><p>“I don’t have a great answer for you,” Steichen said. “I’ve been here two years. Enter backup QB – and ageless wonder – Joe Flacco. The 17-year veteran stepped in for an injured Richardson and led the Colts to a 27-24 win over the previously undefeated Steelers.</p><p>Pittsburgh fans are used to seeing the now 39-year-old signal caller as he’s faced the team 22 times over his remarkable career. With the win on Sunday, Flacco is now 11-11 against the Steelers. Of course, most of those matchups came during Flacco’s 11-year run as the Baltimore Ravens’ QB.</p><p>Flacco expressed respect and admiration for his opponent. “Man, they have been pretty <a href="https://www.steelernation.com/2024/09/30/steelers-joe-flacco-honest-better" rel="noopener">similar over the years</a>. They have an awesome front, they get after you, and they give you multiple looks on the backend. I mean, they do such a good job. It was definitely nice to get out there against those familiar black and yellow uniforms,” he said during an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” per Steeler Nation’s Anthony G. Halkias.</p><h2><b>Colts backup QB Joe Flacco loves facing the Steelers defense</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Joe-Flacco.jpg"><figcaption>Christine Tannous-USA TODAY Network via Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>It’s perhaps not all too surprising that the Steelers have been similar over the years. Head coach Mike Tomlin actually predates Flacco’s time in the league, having first assumed head coaching duties for Pittsburgh in 2007. While Tomlin has done an incredible job during his tenure with the Steelers, including holding the record for the most non-losing seasons to start a coaching career at 17, it’s possible that Flacco has his number.</p><p>Perhaps Flacco wasn’t elite as a starting quarterback. But there are likely few backups teams around the league would take over him at this point. The savvy passer can take over a game and deliver a win on any given Sunday. In Week Four he went 16/26 for 168 passing yards and two touchdowns with no turnovers in relief of an injured Richardson. He out dueled the Steelers’ Justin Fields, who threw for 312 yards and a touchdown while running in two scores on the ground. Both quarterbacks had sensational days. Flacco finished with the slightly higher passer rating of 105.9 with Fields producing a rating of 104.0</p><p>The Colts selected Richardson with the fourth overall pick in the 2023 draft. He was forced from Sunday’s game with oblique and abdominal strains. However, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/colts-news-anthony-richardson-jonathan-taylor-optimistic-injury-updates-jaguars-clash">young quarterback is considered day-to-day</a> and has a chance to suit up in Week Five. While some media members like Kirk Herbstreit aren’t so sure that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/colts-news-kirk-herbstreit-head-turning-anthony-richardson-joe-flacco-speculation">Richardson should automatically get the job back from Flacco</a>, the Colts will almost certainly turn back to their prized passer when he’s healthy enough to play.</p><p>Now 3-1 on the season, the Steelers will next head to Dallas to take on the 2-2 Cowboys. Kirk Herbstreit asked that very huge question to the Midwestern squad during their NFL Preseason win against the Cincinnati Bengals.</p><p>The Colts ended their NFL Preseason run strong. They won over the Bengals with a convincing 27-14 scoreline while running multiple people at the signal-caller spot and testing out different schemes. However, Shane Steichen has yet to give a definite resolution about who their consistent starting quarterback would be. This means that there was not ample time to get a sample size of how he is going to look like. But, he did manage to notch eight completions out of 14 passing attempts for 86 yards. All of that netted them a touchdown too but an interception held the Colts back by quite a bit.</p><p>Last season, Richardson was only able to play in five games and started in four of them. Throughout that time, he was sacked seven times but still got to produce 577 passing yards on a 59.5% completion percentage with 84 attempts. Year 2 will be the clearest indicator of where the Colts are headed when it comes to the quarterback spot. While franchise signal-caller Anthony Richardson is barely old enough to drink, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/colts-news-joe-flacco-heads-to-indianapolis-after-massive-browns-season">backup Joe Flacco is old</a> enough to have adult children.</p><p>Richardson has <a href="https://x.com/LarraOverton/status/1793361746037518730" rel="noopener">enjoyed poking fun</a> at Flacco’s age during OTAs, via Colts reporter Larra Overton.</p><p>“Anthony Richardson, who turns 22 today, when asked about sharing the QB room with 39 year old Joe Flacco: ‘Joe was in the NFL when I was in elementary school,’ with a laugh,” Overton tweeted. “Numerous times, reiterated, ‘Its Joe Flacco, man!'”</p><p>Richardson has good reason to be starstruck. Flacco was the Super Bowl XLVII MVP, as well as the joint record holder for passing touchdowns in a single postseason, which he accomplished in the championship-winning 2012 campaign. He tossed 11 scores, beating Peyton Manning and Tom Brady in back-to-back playoff thrillers.</p><p>Although he may be in the twilight of his career, Flacco proved last season that he’s still not washed up. The Delaware alum won NFL Comeback Player of the Year as a member of the Cleveland Browns, unexpectedly leading the team to the playoffs after joining mid-season.</p><p>Needless to say, Flacco’s veteran presence and mentorship will be invaluable to Richardson’s development,</p><p>Richardson has also been <a href="https://x.com/LarraOverton/status/1793359776639828116" rel="noopener">developing his relationship</a> with running back Jonathan Taylor, via Overton.</p><p>“RB Jonathan Taylor says in supplement to time on field in OTAs, he’s made a point to have constant conversations with QB Anthony Richardson, following up from film sessions and practices,” Overton tweeted. “JT says he might ask Ant “what was your thought process here” to continue building rapport.”</p><p>Richardson and Taylor’s offseason work will be beneficial for their chemistry this season, as both players missed time due to injury last year.</p><p>Will the second-year quarterback take a step forward this season?</p><h2><b>Richardson must develop his mechanics and play cautiously to become the next Colts great</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Colts-Anthony-Richardson.jpg"><figcaption>© Kelly Wilkinson/IndyStar / USA TODAY NETWORK</figcaption></figure><p>Richardson barely got his feet wet last year before going down with a season-ending shoulder injury. He also added 136 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 25 carries.</p><p>To avoid further catastrophe, it would be best for Richardson to use his legs sparingly and get rid of the ball as quickly as possible. However, the Florida alum <a href="https://www.nfl.com/news/colts-qb-anthony-richardson-nothing-wrong-play-style-my-shoulder-did-what-it-did" rel="noopener">doesn’t seem concerned</a> with his durability, via NFL.com’s Jeremy Bergman.</p><p>“Changing my game and my play style? I don’t feel like there’s anything wrong with my play style,” Richardson said. “People see me, I’m a big quarterback, so they always think, ‘Oh, he wants to run the ball all the time, he wants to be physical and that’s what’s gonna get him hurt.’ But that’s not the case. The times I did get hurt… The one time, the one concussion, that was me completely because I slowed down by the end zone — you’re never supposed to do that. Everything else, it just happened because we play a dangerous game, and there’s nothing I can do about that.”</p><p>If Richardson does continue to run often and extend plays, he’d better master the art of sliding and evading tacklers. It looked like the days of Flacco being the guy were over, but he showed that he still has more in the tank. Now, Flacco is with the Indianapolis Colts as he just signed a one-year deal worth $8.7 million. However, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/colts-news-joe-flacco-heads-to-indianapolis-after-massive-browns-season" rel="noopener">Flacco was a bit</a> concerned that no teams would sign him after a lot of backup quarterbacks were signed before him.</p><p>Some players that were picked up before Joe Flacco were Mitch Trubisky, Jameis Winston, Gardner Minshew and more. Flacco has a lot of respect for those guys, but he was pretty surprised when they were getting signed and he wasn’t.</p><p>“Nothing against the other guys but mostly when I’m sitting around <a href="https://twitter.com/PatMcAfeeShow/status/1768314461998158059?s=20" rel="noopener">watching everybody get signed</a>, I’m looking at my wife and going, what the hell is going on,” Flacco said during an appearance on the <i>Pat McAfee Show.</i> “Like I can’t sign anywhere. Am I not going to sign anywhere, what the hell is going on here. So, yeah, just mostly that’s what was going through my mind. I was ready to see what was going to happen, and probably had a few ideas of what may happen but you’re always wrong when you try to think of where you might end up, you really have no idea.”</p><p>It took a little bit longer than he expected, but it all worked out as Flacco ended up <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/colts-news-retaining-kenny-moore-on-historic-30-million-deal" rel="noopener">signing with the Colts</a>. Not only did Joe Flacco prove he can still play in this league, but they brought in a guy who can help develop Anthony Richardson. We all know Richardson’s athleticism. However, he’ll now have a true veteran leader in his ear helping him become a better passer.</p><p>Indianapolis has been incredibly smart in developing Richardson so far. He looked great during his rookie campaign before falling to a season-ending injury. Hopefully, that won’t happen again. Now, Joe Flacco adds to the list with an impressive Comeback Player of the Year honor.</p><h2><b>Joe Flacco joins the Browns’ 2023-24 NFL Awards list with a respectable career revitalization  </b></h2><p>Flacco won the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year award over Damar Hamlin and Baker Mayfield, <a href="https://twitter.com/RapSheet/status/1755798579573362749" rel="noopener">per Ian Rapoport</a>. The veteran quarterback accumulated 151 votes compared followed by Hamlin at 140 and Mayfield at 93. Flacco’s resurgence with the Browns did not go unnoticed.</p><p>After spending the first half of the season on the practice squad, Flacco signed an active roster deal with the Browns and helped them go on an impressive run. In five games, the 39-year-old amassed 1,616 passing yards and 13 touchdowns. He helped Cleveland finish the regular season with a record of 11-6.</p><p>Flacco amassed some impressive records during the process.</p><p>During Cleveland’s Dec. 28th game against the New York Jets, he achieved an age-defying feat that ranked him with Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. Flacco became <a href="https://twitter.com/karnsies817/status/1740579666233336258" rel="noopener">the fourth oldest player</a> in NFL history to go three straight games with 300 or more passing yards.</p><p>In addition, the veteran QB  was the first in league history to have at least 250 passing yards and multiple TDs in each of his five first games with a new franchise. These accolades help illustrate Flacco’s importance to the Browns during the regular season.</p><p>Unfortunately, Cleveland was not able to make a deep playoff run. The squad suffered a stunning 45-14 AFC Wild card loss to the Houston Texans. But the team reportedly <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/browns-news-joe-flacco-paid-extra-75000-amid-week-18-benching" rel="noopener">could have had Joe Flacco</a> if it had thought highly enough of him.</p><p>According to The Athletic, the Jets <a href="https://theathletic.com/5238599/2024/01/31/jets-aaron-rodgers-robert-saleh-season-collapse/?source=user_shared_article">contacted several</a> veteran NFL quarterbacks, including Carson Wentz, Colt McCoy, and retired Kansas City Chiefs backup Chad Henne. Flacco was also available; the then-38-year-old quarterback, who played parts of the last three seasons with the Jets, was famously helping his wife shuttle his children to school as a free agent. But the Jets apparently thought Wilson would be a better option than any of the veterans, Flacco included.</p><p>“Joe Flacco, who was with the Jets for parts of three seasons from 2020-22, was available, but key decision-makers inside the building didn’t think Flacco would be an upgrade, according to league sources,” The Athletic reported.</p><h2>Joe Flacco leads Browns to playoffs</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Browns_news_Joe_Flacco_s_blunt_response_on_Cleveland_future_after_playoff_fail_copy.webp"></figure><p>Flacco ultimately signed with the Cleveland Browns in November after Cleveland starting quarterback Deshaun Watson underwent season-ending shoulder surgery. When the Browns, who won games with three different starting quarterbacks before Flacco, turned to the former Ravens captain, Cleveland became one of the best stories of the season.</p><p>After losing his first Browns start against the Los Angeles Rams, Flacco led Cleveland to four consecutive victories, including a 37-20 win over the Jets on Dec. 28 in which he passed for 309 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. By that game, Wilson had been benched, demoted to third on the depth chart, promoted to starter again, and knocked out for the rest of the season with a concussion. Trevor Siemian started the game against Cleveland, throwing for 261 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.</p><p>With Flacco at the helm, the Browns finished the season 11-6 and clinched just their second playoff berth since 2002. Flacco also began being discussed as possibly the only realistic option to win NFL Comeback Player of the Year aside from the Buffalo Bills’ Damar Hamlin.</p><p>Unfortunately for Flacco and the Browns, they were no match for the young and hungry Houston Texans in the wild-card round. Houston won 45-14 in a rematch of the regular season as Flacco threw back-to-back interceptions that were returned for touchdowns.</p><p>The Jets, despite unrealistic hope Rodgers would make an unprecedented return by the end of the season from his injury, finished the year 7-10. As the starter of 11 games, Wilson went 4-7 and passed for 2,271 yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions.
