Milton, a sixth-round draft pick by the New England Patriots last season, was a physical freak of nature, but there were concerns about his accuracy and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/dallas-cowboys/cowboys-news-joe-milton-hits-back-critics-throwing-style">ability to throw with touch.</a> Aside from those concerns, Cowboys fans were also puzzled by the decision to trade for a young quarterback while they still have a perfectly solid quarterback in Dak Prescott.</p><p>Milton’s first two preseason games for the Cowboys seemed to validate these concerns, as the quarterback looked every bit like the project he was pegged to be. However, in the final game of the preseason, Milton <a href="https://x.com/jasrifootball/status/1959071811309568184" rel="noopener">gave fans a glimpse of his true potential.</a> He completed 10 of his 18 passes, throwing for 132 yards. His highlight came in the third quarter, when he threw a gorgeous touchdown to Jalen Brooks.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">JOE MILTON. It’s a great sign for the young quarterback: earlier this preseason, the Cowboys quarterback overthrew his receivers on a route similar to Brooks’. Being able to throw with finesse like that will unlock a new level for the sophomore.</p><p>Milton finishes his preseason stint with the Cowboys with a 55.3% completion rate, throwing for 397 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. There aren’t impressive numbers, but there’s enough good stuff during the preseason that Cowboys fans should feel better about the trade.</p><p>Will the sophomore quarterback see any playing time in the regular season? Probably not. Dallas is still in win-now mode this season. Despite how some Cowboys fans feel about him, Prescott is still one of the top quarterbacks in the league. Their offense got a revamp after trading for George Pickens. There are some glaring holes on the team, yes, but they have positioned themselves to contend for a title this year. Save for some garbage-time minutes, Milton is unlikely to see this field this year.</p><p>Still, perhaps this performance convinces the Cowboys front office (and their fans) that Milton is their future quarterback after Prescott. If they can continue to develop the quarterback, he will be an excellent asset for the franchise.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Milton, however, has yet to find his footing in his first stint in Dallas.</p><p>The Cowboys lost to the Baltimore Ravens, 31-13, in their preseason affair on Saturday. Milton failed to impress, throwing 9-of-18 for 122 yards and an interception. He was also sacked for a safety. He was outplayed by Ravens quarterback Cooper Rush, who served as Prescott’s backup for the last four seasons.</p><p>The 25-year-old Milton takes a bit longer to release the ball, which could make him susceptible to defensive pressure. Some have also called him out for being too aggressive with his throw. The signal-caller addressed the matter <a href="https://x.com/jonmachota/status/1958345289711947778" rel="noopener">with a stern remark</a>.</p><p>“I don’t understand why people say I throw the ball so hard. I’m literally not throwing the ball hard. It just comes off my hand like that. I was born and blessed that way. If Dak Prescott goes down, Milton is probably the best option the Cowboys have. And that’s probably why he is getting such a long look in the preseason.</p><p>Milton is trying to navigate through the <a href="https://www.dallascowboys.com/news/joe-milton-breaks-down-mistakes-vs-ravens-where-he-needs-to-improve" rel="noopener">issues he showed</a> against the Ravens, according to dallascowboys.com.</p><p>“If it wasn’t for the interception, I feel like it would’ve been a smooth C-plus,” Milton said. “But right now, I still feel like I’d give myself a D just because I’ve got to clean my eyes up.”</p><p>His interception seemed to be the thing that stood out in his performance against the Ravens.</p><p>“Just looking at (Jonathan) Mingo, knowing that he beat the corner, seeing the boundary safety roll down to that side, and just knowing that I had a one-on-one over there with Mingo and that corner,” Milton said. “And I just trusted Mingo. But I just got to fix my eyes and see the post safety roll in over there.”</p><p>Also, Milton took a safety when Keyon Martin tackled him.</p><p>“I didn’t see him,” Milton said. “I knew my hot responsibilities; I just didn’t see him. Just because there was a bunch [formation] over there and he was hiding between the tight end and the bunch, so I really just didn’t see him.”</p><p>Schottenheimer said Milton needs to learn from his mistakes against the Ravens. Included in the mix, Schottenheimer said Milton should have thrown the ball away instead of taking the safety. Dallas made plenty of moves this offseason to set Schottenheimer up for success during his first season. The first-year head coach is already facing some difficult decisions just weeks before the regular season.</p><p>Cowboys quarterback Joe Milton III <a href="https://x.com/jonmachota/status/1956909460477390989" rel="noopener">did not get a vote of confidence</a> from his head coach on Saturday.</p><p>“I wouldn’t say I’m concerned,” Schottenheimer said about Joe Milton’s performance, per The Athletic’s Jon Machota. “We didn’t get in a rhythm. … It wasn’t just Joe.”</p><p>Milton had an ugly first half against the Ravens, only completing two passes for 18 yards on eight attempts. He also logged one interception after making a questionable throw into double coverage. Milton also threw an interception in last week’s preseason game.</p><p>Thankfully Milton rebounded in the second half, ending the game 9-of-18 for 122 yards and an interception. He did get an opportunity to showcase his arm on a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/dallas-cowboys/cowboys-news-joe-milton-49-yard-bomb-jonathan-mingo">49-yard completion with Jonathan Mingo</a>.</p><p>Schottenheimer added that “I feel like I don’t have to decide anything today” about the team’s backup quarterback job.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/nfl-stories/cowboys-news-dak-prescott-new-backup-patriots-trade">Cowboys acquired Joe Milton III in a trade</a> with the Patriots back in April.</p><p>Milton is in a training camp competition with Will Grier for Dallas’ backup job behind Dak Prescott. At this point in the preseason, Milton seems to have a comfortable lead over Grier.</p><p>When asked about having a backup quarterback the team can trust, Schottenheimer gave a more optimistic answer.</p><p>“I think we have to believe that,” Schottenheimer replied. “I think we do believe that. … I’m not panicked.”</p><p>Schottenheimer might be optimistic, but Cowboys fans may not share his optimism.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/dallas-cowboys/cowboys-news-dallas-officially-places-dak-prescott-ir-season-ending-injury">Cowboys lost Dak Prescott to a season-ending injury</a> during the 2024 season. Miles Sanders led the ground attack but was largely contained, including a fourth-and-1 stop at the Baltimore 45-yard line.</p><p>Milton’s turnovers also hampered momentum, throwing an interception in the end zone after Dallas had just forced Baltimore to punt, giving the Ravens another scoring opportunity before halftime.</p><p>Defensively, Dallas had some standout moments. Cornerback Andrew Booth intercepted Cooper Rush and returned it for a touchdown to put the Cowboys ahead 7-5 in the first quarter, and Kemon Hall added a second interception in the second quarter.</p><p>However, Baltimore responded efficiently with a Keith Kirkwood touchdown pass and three field goals by rookie kicker Tyler Loop, building an 18-7 halftime lead.</p><p>In the fourth quarter, the Cowboys advanced to the Baltimore 18-yard line, but an 11-yard sack on Milton led to another field goal, making it 21-13.</p><p>Baltimore quickly responded with a seven-play, 52-yard drive ended by a two-yard touchdown run from D’Ernest Johnson, effectively sealing the game at 31-13. However, much of that excitement diminished when the second-year quarterback struggled in his unofficial Cowboys debut.</p><p>Milton started the Cowboys’ preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams and went 17-for-29, throwing 143 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception. His performance delivered the full Joe Milton experience, featuring a handful of highlights alongside an equal number of concerning moments. While many fans were disappointed, ESPN’s Todd Archer reminded fans about <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/45922509/2025-nfl-preseason-week-1-takeaways-top-rookies-new-players" rel="noopener">the highs and lows</a> that come with Milton’s inexperience.</p><p>“After games like Saturday’s, it must be pointed out that quarterback Joe Milton III is in his second year,” Archer wrote. “There will be growing pains even if the Cowboys are counting on him as Dak Prescott’s backup. He was off-target on his first three throws of the game and his first completion lost one yard. Accuracy was an issue. To open the second half, he was intercepted after he forced a deep ball into double coverage to Ryan Flournoy.”</p><p>Milton’s touchdown pass was a two-yard toss to rookie Josh Kelly in the fourth quarter. The former New England Patriots rookie has impressed the team throughout the offseason. Many, including Prescott and owner Jerry Jones, continue to praise his play and express their disbelief at the value they obtained him for.</p><p>Milton replaced former longtime backup Cooper Rush, who signed with the Baltimore Ravens in free agency. Rush started nine games in 2024 after Prescott landed on injured reserve and led Dallas to a 4-5 finish and missing the playoffs.</p><p>While Milton might not be as consistent as Rush, he is undoubtedly the more dynamic player. His athleticism and big-play threat will create more moments, but will also lead to more frustrating mistakes.</p><p>In any case, Cowboys fans are hoping for a healthy season from Prescott that will not force Milton onto the field too often.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Even though Bayless has vocally criticized Prescott in the past.</p><p>Fox NFL insider Jordan Schultz, however, <a href="https://x.com/Schultz_Report/status/1954361814382154220" rel="noopener">spoke more highly</a> of Milton.</p><p>“Joe Milton continues to impress with the Cowboys. Holds the ball as long as he can, doesn’t bail from the pocket and has that patented easy arm strength,” Schultz posted. </p><p>Although one more fan believed Will Grier generated more excitement than Milton.</p><p>“Well, Will Grier just generated more excitement in like 4 plays than Joe Milton had all game. I’m super thankful to have a guy like that.”</p><p>Milton III started one game for the Patriots last season in Week 18 and played very well, showing that he has promise in this league. Milton threw for 274 yards and one touchdown, completing 22 of 29 passes.</p><p>As of now, the former Tennessee product is a backup quarterback in this league, but the more moments he earns, and he shines during those moments, he could find himself in a position where he becomes a starter for one of the 32 teams. QB injuries are happening more often, and Milton is capable of taking advantage of the opportunity.</p><p>Milton will get a ton of reps this preseason as the slated No. 2 behind Prescott. How did Milton, who looked like a rising star in his incredible Week 18 effort last fall, command a return so far from expectations? Well, Mike Vrabel was asked that very question during his press conference on Tuesday and <a href="https://www.patriots.com/news/transcript-head-coach-mike-vrabel-press-conference-4-15" rel="noopener">explained the rationale behind the decision</a>.</p><p>On one hand, Vrabel is correct: it’s hard to imagine a world where Milton would get enough snaps to keep up his development if he began the season as a reserve. The Patriots also probably wouldn’t have signed Dobbs if they believed they could do right by their former backup quarterback at practice and in the preseason either, which is why Dobbs came to town.</p><p>And yet, Milton is a very interesting player with elite athletic tools and a growth mentality. Giving up such a player for a fifth-round pick when he cost a sixth-round pick to acquire just the year prior? Well goodness, New England probably wouldn’t have accepted that deal during the 2024 NFL Draft and thus shouldn’t have mere months after one of the best performances of last season.</p><p>Will Milton become a serious player for the Cowboys in 2025 or beyond? Probably not unless Prescott is unable to play for the team for one reason or another. But now, that’s no longer the Patriots’ concern, as they have a chance to draft another player, quarterback or otherwise, in the fifth round and will get to see what the Cowboys can do with their former backup for the next three years.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

New England received Dallas’ 2025 fifth-round pick as part of the deal (No. 149) while also surrendering a seventh-round pick (No. 217 overall) in the upcoming NFL Draft.</p><p>Milton essentially redshirted his rookie season in 2024 until the final week, playing the vast majority of snaps in the Patriots’ Week 18 win over the Buffalo Bills. As that marked his first official NFL action, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/nfl-stories/nfl-rumors-eagles-steelers-raiders-teams-interest-patriots-qb-trade">Milton’s play earned him some praise</a>, with some wondering if his ceiling was higher than expected when the Patriots elected him in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft.</p><p>That question wasn’t likely to be answered <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-england-patriots/patriots-news-josh-mcdaniels-honest-building-offense-drake-maye">in New England with Drake Maye in place</a> as the team’s starting quarterback for the foreseeable future and with the signing of Joshua Dobbs in March, Milton became expendable. Now, Milton will wait for his chance behind Dak Prescott in Dallas.</p><p>But let’s look at this trade from a Patriots lens.</p><h2><b>Grading the Joe Milton trade for the Patriots</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Joe-Milton_f66a36.jpg"><figcaption>David Butler II-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>When the news broke Thursday that Milton had been moved for a fifth-round pick, the value seemed right. Milton was a sixth-round pick a year ago whose only NFL experience was playing in a glorified preseason game against the Bills’ second- and third-stringers, with Buffalo looking like it was outtanking New England that day.</p><p>So, from a value standpoint, the deal makes sense. But when you’re trading a second-year quarterback who has shown some decent upside, you should be looking to get more than fair value in a potential trade. The Patriots were under no edict to move Milton, even if they had signed Dobbs earlier in the offseason, and Maye was set to be the Patriots’ starting quarterback for the long haul. He’s under contract for the next three seasons, giving New England a cheap backup option.</p><p>Admittedly, I don’t view Milton in the highest regard. His dual-threat ability was on full display, as he threw for 241 yards and a touchdown and rushed for another score, making several plays with his arm and legs in that game. He showed far more talent at that position than many other backup quarterbacks the Patriots have had in recent years.</p><p>Which is why the Patriots shouldn’t have traded Milton at all unless an offer wowed them. It feels more likely that Milton would’ve made a more notable contribution to New England in 2025 had he stayed than whatever player the Patriots selected with the fifth-round pick. Yes, Maye is the Patriots’ starting quarterback, but it’s hard not to envision a scenario where New England will need to call on its backup at some point this season, considering that Maye was sidelined due to injury in two games last season.</p><p>Furthermore, the Patriots <a href="https://x.com/Schultz_Report/status/1907809290015973677" rel="noopener">also left some draft capital on the table</a> <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/nfl-stories/nfl-rumors-why-patriots-made-cowboys-trade-better-offer">in order to trade Milton to his preferred team</a>, according to Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz. But Milton was chucking bombs, threading the needle, and running around behind the line of scrimmage looking for things to develop down the field, leading some to wonder if a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/nfl-rumors-patriots-joe-milton-trade-interest-week-18-outburst">QB-needy team could make a call about his services</a>.</p><p>Well, according to FOX Sports insider Jordan Schultz, the answer to that question is yes, as there have been teams that have contacted New England about his availability. But will a deal happen? <a href="https://x.com/Schultz_Report/status/1899265330649907500" rel="noopener">That depends on if the right deal comes along</a>.</p><p>On the one hand, bringing in Josh Dobbs does free things up for a Milton deal, as his draft stock is easily worth more than the Patriots’ initial investment, but what happens if Maye is injured or, worse, regresses as a second-year player? Would New England be willing to say goodbye to a player other teams believe could be a franchise guy when they are so early in their own rebuild?</p><p>If the Patriots are offered an early Day 3 pick for Milton, they will probably take it, as even New England knows they can’t really develop two quarterbacks at once if one is forced to ride the bench all season. However, the Patriots may get swept away as they are getting Joe Milton III trade interest after his Week 18 outburst.</p><p>Milton passed for a touchdown and ran for another in his professional debut, leading the Patriots to a 23-16 win over the Buffalo Bills that cost New England the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. He’s getting better every day, and again — going back to stealing reps — he’s one of the top users of the virtual reality system.”</p><p>Milton came into the league off a good season at the University of Tennessee. He threw for 2,813 yards with 20 touchdowns and five interceptions in his last year with the Volunteers. He stands 6-foot-5, weighs 245 pounds, and has one of the strongest — if not the strongest — arms in the NFL.</p><p>Back in the preseason, Mayo said <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otGFf7vp-Sw" rel="noopener">the talent is there</a>, according to a post on YouTube by the Patriots.</p><p>“We know he has a big arm,” Mayo said. “He has the athleticism. He’s getting better with his reads every single day. He has natural leadership ability.</p><p>“But once again … it’s about the full body of work. You can come out here and play well but you also have to do it on a day-to-day basis. You’ve got to gain the confidence of not only the coaches but also your teammates. Despite the disastrous four-win season, there is hope for the Patriots at quarterback with Drake Maye. Owner Robert Kraft <a href="https://x.com/TomPelissero/status/1876331979110769033" rel="noopener">made a joke about</a> Joe Milton III, who played well in Sunday’s win with Maye out.</p><p>Wrapping up his presser, Patriots owner Robert Kraft answers a question about the front office and roster by smirking as he says: “‘It looks like we lucked out — we maybe have two quarterbacks,'” NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported. “Drake Maye and Joe Milton III, in their own ways, made quite a first impression.”</p><p>Milton was drafted in the sixth round last year out of the University of Tennessee. Maye played the first drive, a three-and-out, and passed the baton to Milton to prevent injury. The backup went 22-29 with 241 passing yards, one touchdown, and no picks in a win over the Bills’ backups.</p><p>Maybe the Patriots did hit on another sixth-round quarterback who at one point went to the University of Michigan. But fans are hoping they never have to find out after a great season from first-round pick Drake Maye.</p><h2><b>Who is the best coach for Drake Maye, Patriots?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Joe-Milton-with-NE-Patriots.jpg"><figcaption>Brian Fluharty-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>When Bill Belichick was fired by the Patriots last offseason, Jerod Mayo was quickly hired to replace him. It came out that Kraft and Mayo already had an agreement to make him the coach after Belichick left. But the one year with Mayo at the helm was such a disaster that Kraft felt he had no other choice.</p><p>The connection has already been made between the<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl-rumors-mike-vrabel-patriots-candidate-replace-jerod-mayo"> team and Patriots Hall of Famer Mike Vrabel</a>. After a successful run with the Tennessee Titans, he was fired in a power struggle with a new general manager. He spent the last year as an assistant with the Cleveland Browns and has already <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl-rumors-mike-vrabel-interview-jets-went-well-catch">had an interview with the New York Jets</a>.</p><p>While Vrabel is not an offensive mind, he did have a relationship with Arthur Smith, who could leave the Steelers for the opportunity to work with Drake Maye. That is assuming the former Falcons head coach does not get another head coaching gig.</p><p>An offensive mind like Ben Johnson, Smith, Bobby Slowik, Joe Brady, or Matt Nagy would also be great fits.
