The former #Falcons TE lands in Miami.’</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/falcons-releasing-3rd-leading-receiver" rel="noopener">Smith was recently released</a> by the Atlanta Falcons and finds a new home quickly in the market. He spent the 2023 season with the Falcons, catching 50 passes for 582 yards with three touchdowns as he plays all 17 games. Prior to that, Smith was with the New England Patriots in a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/patriots-news-new-england-bags-hunter-henry-3-year-deal-after-adding-jonnu-smith" rel="noopener">tight end room that included</a> Hunter Henry.</p><p>His time with the Patriots ended with 55 receptions for 539 yards and just one score, so he nearly exceeded all of those in just one year with the Falcons.</p><p>Smith originally began his career with the Tennessee Titans, so now he returns back to the AFC and joins the Dolphins.</p><p>Miami was in need of some tight end help with Durham Smythe leading the way with 35 catches for 366 yards and no scores after Mike Gesicki <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/patriots-news-mike-gesicki-staying-in-afc-east-agrees-to-sign-with-new-england" rel="noopener">signed with the Patriots</a> last offseason. Unlike quarterback Mac Jones’ reported high-ankle sprain, Smith’s low-ankle sprain should be quicker to heal. </p><p>A sign as to how severe Smith’s ankle injury is will be revealed later Wednesday as the Patriots return to the practice field. If Smith’s not out on the field, it could be a bad sign for his chances to play in Week 5 against the Detroit Lions.</p><p>The Patriots are pretty thin at tight end on the active roster. Matt Sokol is also an option on the practice squad as New England could call him up the day before Sunday’s game.</p><p>Smith looked to be a bit more involved in the first few games this season compared to his first season in New England. He had seven receptions on 11 targets for 58 yards in the first three games, recording three receptions in Week 1 against the Miami Dolphins and four receptions against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 3. They made one move to do that on Friday with Jonnu Smith.</p><p>Smith’s contract for the 2022 season was reworked. New England converted $7.965 million of the tight end’s base salary into a bonus, which creates $5.31 million in cap space for the upcoming season, <a href="https://twitter.com/FieldYates/status/1565707912319737858">ESPN’s Field Yates reported</a>.</p><p>Prior to Friday, the Patriots had just north of $3 million in cap space. By restructuring Smith’s contract, the Patriots have roughly $8.8 million in cap space, <a href="https://twitter.com/patscap/status/1565711933772369920">per salary cap guru Miguel Benzan</a>.</p><p>A move doesn’t appear to be on the horizon, but of course, things can change. New England also hasn’t been a stranger to making splashy in-season moves in the past, and it’ll likely need a fair amount of cap space if it wanted to acquire a solid contributor.</p><p>The move also means that the Patriots are borrowing future cap space to create cap space now, indicating that they’re confident in a turnaround season for Smith. New England signed Smith to a four-year, $50 million deal in 2021, but the tight end disappointed in his first season with the Patriots. He only had 28 receptions for 294 yards and a touchdown, which were all either the lowest since his rookie season (receptions and yards) or the lowest of his career (touchdowns).</p><p>The installation of the new streamlined offense should better suit Smith’s strengths, which allow receivers to make plays after the catch. Smith led all NFL tight ends in yards gained after catch per reception last season (8.5). Tight end Jonnu Smith is one of those on the Jones hype train.</p><p>Smith <a href="https://www.nfl.com/news/patriots-jonnu-smith-mac-jones-he-s-just-got-so-much-ability-and-so-muc" rel="noopener">appeared</a> on the NFL Network program Good Morning Football when he was asked about his signal-caller.</p><blockquote>“Honestly, man, just the way he can turn it on,” Smith said of the 23-year-old. “Mac is definitely one of the most goofiest guys in the locker room, to be honest, man. But when he steps on that field, he’s a different character.“He’s just got so much ability and so much dog in him. Once he flips that switch, he’s a whole different character. Some guys don’t know how to cut that on and cut that off when it’s time to do it,” Smith concluded.</blockquote><p>Jones was drafted 15th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft and won the starting job out of training camp. He threw for 3801 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 17 interceptions in his rookie campaign.</p><p>Jones led the Patriots back to the playoffs after the team missed out in 2020, but they fell to the Buffalo Bills.</p><p>Smith joined the Patriots prior to the 2021 season. He signed a four-year, $50 million contract with hopes of elevating a Patriots offense in need of some firepower.</p><p>However, things didn’t work out so well for the 26-year-old. He started 11 games, hauling in 28 catches for 294 yards and one lone receiving touchdown in 2021.</p><p>Heading into the 2022 season, Smith is confident in turning his game around, and he’s confident in the man throwing him passes.</p><blockquote>“He’s got a little swagger to him, man. Ryan one of the best teammates I’ve been around at any level and he didn’t “mentor” me but I dam sure learned a lot from him” Smith said.</blockquote><p>While drafting a quarterback in succession is nothing new in the NFL, more recently veterans are seemingly less willing to “mentor” their younger counterparts.
