Richardson is a great athlete, but the consistency has not been there, and he has not been able to stay healthy, as <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/colts-news-anthony-richardson-already-dealing-nagging-shoulder-injury">he is already dealing with a shoulder injury</a> at minicamp. Daniel Jones joining the Colts also makes this a real competition.</p><p>Richardson was on thin ice coming into this season, but to make matters worse, he has been dealing with a shoulder injury since mandatory minicamp started, sidelining him and giving all first-team reps up to this point to Daniel Jones. Peyton Manning was on the Pat McAfee show on Monday and gave <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpwAYgAz02s&amp;t=1034s">his take on the current quarterback situation in Indianapolis</a>.</p><p>He elaborated on it all and even said he’s familiar with them due to the Manning Passing Academy: “I know all those quarterbacks, speaking of the Manning Passing Academy, Anthony came, Daniel came, Riley Leonard came. So you get to know all of them. You pull for all of them, and look, I think competition can be good. I know that’s what Shane and Chris are looking for this competition to push both those guys, and hopefully whoever comes out as the starter is opening the season with a little swag and a little bit of edge because he just won a tough quarterback competition.”</p><p>He also said, “Certainly, with Anthony being injured, you know that’s tough and frustrating. I know he wants to be out there throwing with his receivers today, and it’s a little bit of a test of patience there. And with him being injured, that gives Daniel more repetitions.”</p><p>Manning’s opinion means a lot in Colts circles, but he was very diplomatic about the discussion surrounding what Indianapolis should do moving forward under center.</p><p>Anthony Richardson is in his third full season with the Colts. In the previous two seasons, he had them cut short due to injury, and before then, he was not doing much that was impressive. For example, in 11 games last season, he had 1,812 passing yards, eight passing touchdowns, and 12 interceptions with a 47.7% completion percentage.</p><p>Jones parted ways with the New York Giants last season after his inconsistent play reached a fever pitch. After a brief stint with the Minnesota Vikings near the end of last season, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/colts-news-daniel-jones-free-agency-anthony-richardson-qb-competition">he signed a one-year $14 million deal</a> with Indianapolis, giving competition to Richardson.</p><p>It remains to be seen who will start for the Colts in Week 1, but all signs point to Jones due to his availability. He was the Colts’ owner, chairman and CEO from 1997 until his death this year. Throughout his time with the organization, he led them to an incredible Super Bowl title in 2007 when the Colts beat the Chicago Bears 29-17.</p><p>His impact on Indianapolis was undeniable as the franchise will pay tribute to him throughout the entire 2025 NFL season. Franklin and the team <a href="https://x.com/SiriusXMNFL/status/1938311302407197135" rel="noopener">intend on honoring his legacy</a> with motivation to succeed this upcoming campaign.</p><p>“We’re a team with a purpose,” Franklin said on SiriusXM NFL Radio. “Obviously with the passing of Jim Irsay, a great man who’s done not only so much for the city, but the state of Indiana, this season and just honoring his legacy and continue to bring his dream to fruition is definitely extreme motivation. With this upcoming season being big for the franchise due to Jim Irsay’s death, it seems to be clear that Franklin may continue his pace.</p><p>2024 was an impressive year for the veteran linebacker. He played for the entire season as he made 173 tackles, six pass deflections, five forced fumbles, 3.5 sacks, and two interceptions.</p><p>It also marked the third consecutive season he recorded 160 or more tackles, proving his ability as one of the best linebackers in the NFL. He earned his first Pro Bowl selection as he landed on the league’s All-Pro second team.</p><p>The Colts will look to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2020. Last season saw them finish with an 8-9 record, falling short of a playoff spot. This is true even though the man in the second chair <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/colts-news-anthony-richardson-training-camp-injury-declaration">says his health is better</a>. But here is one obvious Colts trade candidate entering the 2025 training camp.</p><p>The Colts and Anthony Richardson have denied the possibility of a trade. The team says it wants to give the third-year player another shot to take control of the team. But his completion percentage (59.5 as a rookie and 47.7 last year) suggests a new environment might be best for him.</p><h2><b>Colts might deal QB Anthony Richardson</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Indianapolis-Colts-QB-Anthony-Richardson.jpg"><figcaption>© Christine Tannous/IndyStar / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>All it takes is one quarterback injury for another team, and the interest in Richardson would grow. He’s already been tabbed as the most likely <a href="https://bleacherreport.com/articles/25201198-1-player-each-nfl-team-should-consider-trading-2025-season" rel="noopener">to get dealt</a>, according to bleacherreport.com.</p><p>Gary Davenport said Richardson’s high draft status has faded into the reality of what he hasn’t been able to accomplish on the field.</p><p>“Yes, Anthony Richardson was a top-five pick in the NFL draft,” Davenport wrote. “Yes, Richardson is built like a fullback and has arm strength to spare. To say he’s wildly athletic is an understatement. Unfortunately, he’s also wildly inaccurate. He’s injury-prone—Richardson has missed more games in two years than he has played in. His decision-making hasn’t been good, either—Richardson has more interceptions than touchdown passes. His passing success rate of 36.0 percent ranked dead last among qualifying quarterbacks in 2024.”</p><p>Of course, there’s the problem with Daniel Jones looking better at the position.</p><p>“If that competition truly is fair and open, Jones is going to win,” Davenport wrote.</p><p>Different folks debated whether Richardson can stick around and earn snaps at the NFL level. One AFC executive <a href="https://www.golongtd.com/p/the-great-anthony-richardson-debate" rel="noopener">laid it out</a>, according to golongtd.com.</p><p>“There’s a lot of data that would support him failing,” the AFC executive said. “But the more I watched (before the ’23 draft), this guy does too many things that nobody else can do. Sometimes when you see that much talent you’ve just got to swing the bat.</p><p>“The minute you start being afraid to be wrong, then you’re kind of not valuable. Then you’re conservative and end up being 8-9 every year. People don’t understand there’s not a quarterback tree in the backyard.”</p><p>Of course, one of the big issues these days is health. Colts head coach Shane Steichen said <a href="https://www.colts.com/news/anthony-richardson-second-opinion-shane-steichen-right-throwing-shoulder" rel="noopener">it’s status quo</a>, according to colts.com.</p><p>“No timetable on the return,” Steichen said. “But we’re going to do his rehab, and once the doctors clear him to throw we’ll ease him back into it.”</p><p>Steichen recently said he expects Richardson to return at some point during training camp.</p><p>Late late season, Steichen said the Colts were not ready to give up on Richardson, according to nfl.com. He commented about <a href="https://www.nfl.com/news/colts-hc-shane-steichen-team-not-giving-up-on-anthony-richardson-in-move-to-start-joe-flacco-at-qb" rel="noopener">deciding to go</a> with Joe Flacco for the remainder of the year.</p><p>“It’s a tough decision,” Steichen said. “But I thought it was the best interest of our football team. I feel like Joe gives us the best chance to win right now. With that being said, I’m not giving up on Anthony by any means, I’m really not. He’s a young player with a ton of talent. The Colts play in a relatively weak division, so having a winning record in divisional games is not super difficult. Additionally, Indianapolis has some questions to answer regarding their team as the new season approaches.</p><p>One major question is who will start at the quarterback position. The team <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/colts-news-daniel-jones-free-agency-anthony-richardson-qb-competition">signed Daniel Jones</a>, but <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/colts-news-anthony-richardson-training-camp-injury-declaration">Anthony Richardson is recovering nicely from his shoulder injury</a>. That quarterback competition should elevate the play from both Jones and Richardson. Along with that, Indianapolis comes into the new season with a solid offensive core. Michael Pittman, Josh Downs, Adonai Mitchell, and Alec Pierce make up a solid wide receiver room, while <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/1-indianapolis-colts-rookie-who-stood-out-most-2025-minicamp">Tyler Warren should be one of the better rookies</a> this year.</p><p>With their offense starting to take shape, there are still a few holes to fill. Below is one move the Colts should make before NFL training camp begins.</p><h2><b>Colts team needs<br></b></h2><p>The Colts made some <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/44025437/colts-2025-free-agency-tracker-offseason-moves-signings" rel="noopener">offseason moves</a> that helped improve their team. Along with Jones, the team brought in Charvarious Ward to start at cornerback, Camryn Bynum to start at safety, and Khalil Herbert to backup Jonathan Taylor.</p><p>The defense seems to be alright for the time being, but the running back room is a little bit weak. Even with the addition of Herbert, Indianapolis could use another running back. This is especially true considering Taylor has dealt with an ankle injury for the past few years. In fact, their star running back has not played a full season since 2021.</p><p>Herbert was brought in to backup Taylor, but there is no guarantee he is going to be good. In 2024, the 27-year-old rushed for 3.6 yards per carry, and just one touchdown. He did finish with 4.1 yards per carry on the Cincinnati Bengals, but</p><p>Taylor still has a lot of talent, and he can rush for a lot of yards when he plays. However, if the injuries continue to be a problem, Indianapolis needs a solid backup to pick up the slack.</p><h2><b>Gus Edwards would fit nicely on the Colts</b></h2><p>As mentioned, the Colts could use another running back. Gus Edwards is a player that would fit nicely in the running back room. He would also bring some competition, which is never a bad thing.</p><p>Indianapolis will start Taylor as long as he is healthy. Herbert will get a few reps, and the team drafted Kansas State’s DJ Giddens in the fifth round. Giddens is expected to have some chances to prove his worth, but Gus Edwards is already proven.</p><p>In his six years in the NFL, Edwards has rushed for 4.7 yards per carry, and 30 touchdowns. In 2023, he found the endzone 13 times for the Baltimore Ravens. Last season, he scored four touchdowns in limited playing time for the Los Angeles Chargers.</p><p>Edwards is not only a good pass blocker, but he runs downhill and gains yards. Per PFF, he finished with a <a href="https://www.pff.com/nfl/players/gus-edwards/46027#bioWidget" rel="noopener">run grade above 75.0</a> in five of his six seasons. He is the type of runner that would fit in well if Taylor were to hurt his ankle again in 2025.</p><p>The Colts do not have a lot of cap space, but there should be enough room to add Edwards. He would immediately slot above Herbert on the depth chart, and he would give Taylor the breaks he needs throughout the game.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

While expectations are still reasonably high, the Colts’ 2025 offseason roster is in a peculiar position coming out of minicamp.</p><p>From the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/colts-news-jim-irsay-suddenly-passes-away-at-age-65">tragic passing of beloved owner Jim Irsay</a> to a concerning injury to quarterback Anthony Richardson, everything seems to have gone wrong for the Colts early on. The adversity could hardly have come at a worse moment, given the tension within the organization.</p><p>Ahead of their third season together, many fans are unhappy with Chris Ballard and Shane Steichen and are pushing for the two to be replaced. The frustration extended to Richardson, whom many already want the team to move on from. Before his sudden death, Irsay opted not to make any significant changes. Carlie Irsay-Gordon, Casey Foyt and Kalen Jackson — Irsay’s three daughters, who assumed ownership of the Colts — appear to fully back their father’s judgment.</p><p>Even with Ballard and Steichen returning, the Colts still underwent notable changes in the 2025 offseason. Steichen fired defensive coordinator Gus Bradley and replaced him with former Cincinnati Bengals assistant Lou Anarumo. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/colts-news-chris-ballard-warning-anthony-richardson-rough-2024-campaign">Ballard also declared that the team would give Richardson competition</a> in 2025 before subsequently signing Daniel Jones in free agency.</p><p>The foundational changes will force Indianapolis to rebuild one way or another. The wide range of variables makes predicting the Colts’ 2025 season path difficult, particularly with the unexpected turns the team’s 2025 offseason roster took in minicamp.</p><h2><b>Daniel Jones will take over for Anthony Richardson</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Colts-QB-Daniel-Jones.jpg"><figcaption>Marc Lebryk-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>No player has generated more buzz from the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/colts-rumors-how-very-sharp-daniel-jones-stood-out-anthony-richardson-absence">Colts’ 2025 OTAs and minicamp than Daniel Jones</a>. As Richardson nurses his shoulder injury, the former New York Giants quarterback has reportedly taken full command of the offense and impressed with his leadership and accuracy. Indianapolis signed Jones in free agency to push Richardson, but might have a legitimate and unexpected quarterback battle on its hands in training camp.</p><p>Jones never truly found his footing with the Giants, but he is a substantially better passer than Richardson. The incumbent starter completed just 47.7 percent of his passes in 2024, a historically poor success rate. Accuracy was an issue for Richardson all season long, as he threw just eight touchdowns to 12 interceptions.</p><p>Jones has been a popular target on social media for the better part of a decade, but there is no denying him as the better pocket passer between the two. His 64.1 completion rate is on par with the league average. Jones has never been a confident downfield passer, but Richardson’s inability to consistently hit receivers in stride is not much of a threat in that department. Playing behind the Colts’ elite offensive line will give Jones more time and confidence than he ever had behind the Giants’ horrendous blocking unit.</p><p>Given the uncertainty surrounding Richardson’s shoulder, there is a realistic scenario where he misses Game 1. Jones might not even need to beat him out in training camp if that is the case. But with the way he has looked in minicamp, Jones is already looking like the best quarterback on the Colts’ 2025 offseason roster.</p><p>Even if Richardson begins the year as the starter, which he figures to do, he has arguably the worst job security in the league. The oft-injured signal-caller does not perform well on a tight leash, giving Jones countless opportunities to see the field in 2025. Amid the current trend of previously labeled “busts” reviving their careers with another team, Jones could be the next comeback story with the Colts in 2025.</p><h2><b>Kwity Paye, Laiatu Latu both record 10+ sacks</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Colts-DE-Laiatu-Latu.jpg"><figcaption>Marc Lebryk-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>When the Colts let Dayo Odeyingbo walk in free agency, it was primarily due to their undivided belief in 2024 first-round pick Laiatu Latu. Indianapolis always intended to let Latu ease his way into the game, and he showed more than enough for the team to believe in his long-term potential in his limited opportunities as a rookie. Despite playing just over 50 percent of the defensive snaps, Latu ended the year third on the team with four sacks.</p><p>The Colts drafted another highly-rated edge-rusher in J.T. Tuimoloau in the 2025 NFL Draft, but Latu has their full support. Spring camps are never pass-rushing showcases, but Latu impressed in OTAs and minicamp with his work ethic and improved physique. Latu focused on “building upper body strength” and <a href="https://1075thefan.com/585544/observations-form-colts-first-minicamp-practice-of-2025/" rel="noopener">improving his football IQ</a> early in the offseason, according to Kevin Bowen of 93.5/107.5 The Fan.</p><p>Latu’s focus on the weight room stems from his admission that he was not physically prepared for a 17-game workload as a rookie. The results reflect his statement, as Latu notched all four of his sacks by Week 12 and failed to generate a single pressure during the remaining five weeks. The 24-year-old’s awareness and dedication to improving on an identified weakness should only result in increased production in 2025.</p><p>If Latu makes a leap, it would only benefit Kwity Paye, who has been quiet but consistent in his four years with the team. Paye led the way with eight sacks in 2024, a slight decrease from his career-high 8.5 in 2023. Whenever on the field, Paye is as consistent as they come, but does his best work when he lines up across another formidable threat. Odeyingbo, who only managed three sacks in 2024, was not that.</p><p>Staying on the field has been Paye’s biggest issue thus far. He has started all 58 games of his career but has yet to play a full season. Latu matching his level in 2025 would additionally aid him in that regard, as Anarumo loves mixing up his schemes and lining up pass-rushers in different spots.</p><h2><b>Adonai Mitchell fully breaks out</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Shane-Steichen-Colts-head-coach-.jpg"><figcaption>Julian Leshay Guadalupe/NorthJersey.com / USA TODAY NETWORK</figcaption></figure><p>Few players on the Colts’ roster underwhelmed in 2024 more than Adonai Mitchell. Indianapolis added the former Texas star in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, hoping to give Richardson another dynamic weapon to work with. Instead, Mitchell managed just 23 catches for 312 receiving yards and failed to reach the end zone.</p><p>The production might not have been there, but Mitchell showed flashes of why the Colts were so high on him in the preseason. Mitchell went viral in Week 1 for torturing the Houston Texans’ secondary, only for Richardson to miss him on several wide-open deep routes. The dynamic athlete had Richardson overthrow him on at least two would-be touchdowns, while getting missed on another potential big gain. The Colts, along with their subsequent fan base, optimistically hope that his elite acceleration and explosion will be better utilized in 2025. Whether it is an improvement from Richardson or Jones taking over under center, Mitchell should have better balls thrown his way in year two.</p><p>Jones is no Pro Bowler, but he is a massive step up from one of the least accurate quarterbacks in NFL history. The Colts reportedly liked what they saw from Jones and Mitchell in minicamp and already believe he can potentially make a significant evolution in 2025.</p><h2><b>Colts will have top-five passing defense</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Colts-defensive-coordinator-Lou-Anarumo.jpg"><figcaption>Sam Greene-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Colts’ defense has a lot of questions to answer in 2025, but the one position on the offseason roster with the most promise is their secondary. Indianapolis made several notable additions to the group, signing former All-Pro Charvarius Ward, veteran safety Camryn Bynum and drafting Justin Walley in the third round.</p><p>Ward, Bynum and Walley are all expected to be immediate contributors. Their inclusions add to a group returning Kenny Moore II, JuJu Brents, Jaylon Jones, Samuel Womack III, Nick Cross and Rodney Thomas II. The loaded group creates a logjam that will inevitably lead to a few surprising cuts in August, but it is already gelling early.</p><p>Nobody questions the impact Ward and Bynum will have on the group, but <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/editorials/rising-indianapolis-colts-rookie-turning-heads-in-2025-otas">Walley has been the defensive back turning heads</a>. Steichen singled out the rookie in one of the Colts’ post-minicamp pressers, saying Walley has been “making plays” in minicamp while complimenting Ballard for making the selection. If the Minnesota alum ends up being the player he looks like early on, Indianapolis could have an elite one-two punch between Ward and Walley.</p><p>The most interesting aspect will be seeing how Anarumo uses the Colts’ revamped secondary. The renowned defensive guru worked wonders with the Bengals’ pass defense in his six-year stint with the team. Anarumo, who was a defensive backs coach from 2001 to 2018, is known for his creative scheming in the second and third levels.</p><p>Anarumo will have his biggest issues with the Colts’ linebacking corps, which is struggling early in the 2025 offseason. Indianapolis lost starting linebacker E.J. Speed in free agency and failed to replace him. Injuries to Zaire Franklin and Jaylon Carlies have kept them out of OTAs and minicamp, further complicating the situation. Teams should have their most success running against this defense, which would only strengthen the Colts’ pass defense numbers.</p><p>With an improved pass-rushing unit on paper, Indianapolis should be much tougher against opposing quarterbacks in 2025 than it was in 2024. Health permitting, adding Ward and Bynum to a young core of defensive backs who continue to improve should only make for a tantalizing defense to throw against.</p><h2><b>2025 will be Shane Steichen’s last season</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Shane-Steichen-with-Indianapolis-Colts.jpg"><figcaption>Christine Tannous / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Steichen entered the offseason on the hot seat, making him one of the handful of coaches who will begin the year in an already shaky situation. Given the pressure fans put on the team to fire Steichen at the end of the 2024 season, Steichen is one of the top candidates to be the first coach fired in 2025.</p><p>Ballard clearly likes Steichen, but the 2024 season went about as poorly as possible. Steichen’s decision to bench Richardson for Joe Flacco was one of the most criticized coaching moves of the year. His ensuing move of re-inserting Richardson back into the starting lineup only made it look worse. Steichen frustrated fans with that move, but infuriated them when the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/pat-mcafee-blasts-colts-after-embarrassing-loss-to-giants">Colts lost to the 2-13 Giants in Week 17</a> to essentially remove them from the playoff picture.</p><p>With the way the Colts ended 2024, fans are already fed up with Steichen. Ballard’s refusal to fire him has only strained his own relationship with the community. Ballard has been with the team for a while, but the improbable change in ownership has to give him a sense of urgency. If Steichen does not impress early, he could return to the job market sooner than desired.</p><p>Indianapolis is already in an awkward position, but many factors could make Steichen’s unenviable arrangement even worse. There is a high chance the Colts’ quarterback underwhelms in 2025, whether it is Richardson or Jones. Once that happens, Steichen will receive most of the blame no matter how the situation unfolds. If any one of the team’s many young pieces fails to reach expectations, he will also take the brunt of the criticism. Maybe the biggest among them is the future of quarterback Anthony Richardson. The 23-year-old signal caller <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/colts-news-anthony-richardson-injury-update-amid-surgery">suffered another shoulder injury</a> that limited him to 11 games last season.</p><p>He missed the mandatory minicamp this summer as he recovers. But it sounds as though <a href="https://x.com/zach_goodall/status/1936851181260746923" rel="noopener">he is on track to make training camp</a>.</p><p>“I’m all good … not really even a bump in the road. I feel like I tripped, I fell. Just got back up and hit the ground running again,” Richardson told Florida Gators reporter Zach Goodall.</p><p>The Colts drafted Richardson fourth overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. The pick was made with upside in mind, as there was not a ton of film to look at. Richardson started for just one season with Florida. His arm strength and athleticism were his touted traits. But there were serious questions about his accuracy and football acumen.</p><p>During his rookie season in Indianapolis, Richardson showed signs of being the Colts’ franchise quarterback. However, an <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/colts-news-anthony-richardson-injury-update">AC joint injury in his throwing shoulder required surgery</a> after just four games. He would miss the remainder of his first season.</p><p>Upon his return in 2024, the Colts quarterback struggled mightily. He completed just 47 percent of his passes. It was not a small sample size, either. Richardson completed just 126 of 264 passes, with eight touchdown passes and 12 interceptions. Granted, the Colts’ receiving corps might have been the worst in the NFL, so they did not do him any favors.</p><p>The former Florida Gator is expected to be re-evaluated before training camp kicks off in a few weeks.</p><p>Indianapolis finished second in the AFC South last season at 8-9, two games back of the Houston Texans. But next season, they face some concerns for both Richardson and the run game. Four-time Pro Bowl center Ryan Kelly left in free agency, as did right guard Will Fries. Knowing the Colts’ offense was built around running the football with Jonathan Taylor and Richardson, it will be interesting to see if they can hold up in the trenches.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

After another season missing the playoffs, the front office made moves that suggest urgency. The Colts added key defensive pieces and bolstered the offense with young playmakers. Now, they enter minicamp with increased competition at nearly every position. That’s great news <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/team/depth/_/name/ind">for the roster as a whole</a>—but not for everyone. For some veterans, this summer could be the beginning of the end in Indianapolis.</p><p>As competition heats up at training camp, two players—one returning from injury and another trying to hold off a rising rookie—find themselves firmly on the bubble. Whether due to contract implications, declining production, or emerging talent behind them, these two Colts could be on the outside looking in by the time Week 1 arrives.</p><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Anthony-Richardson.jpg"><figcaption>Grace Hollars/IndyStar / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><h2><b>Recapping the Colts’ 2025 Offseason and OTAs</b></h2><p>The Colts entered the 2025 offseason with several areas in need of upgrades—chief among them being their pass defense. The team struggled mightily against deep passes in 2024. They responded by signing safety Camryn Bynum to a hefty $15 million per year deal. Sure, that number raised eyebrows. However, Bynum’s age (turning 27 this year) and versatility give the Colts hope he’ll earn his keep in the coming years. They also took a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/colts-news-charvarius-ward-greatness-after-54-million-contract">calculated gamble on cornerback</a> Charvarius Ward. They are banking on a return to his 2023 form after a rocky 2024 campaign.</p><p>On the offensive line, Indianapolis took a hit. Longtime center Ryan Kelly and guard Will Fries both signed with the Minnesota Vikings. The Colts anticipated this, however, selecting Tanor Bortolini and Matt Goncalves in the 2024 draft. Still, the depth and chemistry of this unit will be tested.</p><p>The 2025 draft class offers reasons for optimism. Penn State tight end Tyler Warren <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/colts-news-indianapolis-locks-up-tyler-warren-4-year-rookie-contract">could be the X-factor</a> the offense needs. He should bring a modern, multi-role skill set to a position that’s lacked dynamism since Jack Doyle’s retirement. On the defensive front, the Colts hope JT Tuimoloau <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/editorials/1-indianapolis-colts-rookie-who-stood-out-most-2025-minicamp">will lead a resurgence in pass rush</a> production after finishing 25th in sacks and 28th in pressure rate last year. With the pieces in place, now comes the harder part: choosing which veterans still fit the vision.</p><p>Here we’ll try to look at the two Indianapolis Colts players who may be in danger of getting cut after their 2025 minicamp.</p><h2><b>1. Comeback Story Or Cap Casualty?</b></h2><p>Samson Ebukam was a revelation for the Colts in 2023. He led the team in sacks (9.5) while adding 10 tackles for loss and 17 quarterback hits. However, a torn Achilles wiped out his 2024 season. Now, entering the final year of a three-year, $24 million deal, the 30-year-old edge rusher faces an uphill battle.</p><p>In a vacuum, Ebukam’s production from two seasons ago would warrant a spot. That said, the NFL moves fast. With Tuimoloau arriving via the draft and Laiatu Latu expected to take a second-year leap, the Colts may be looking at a younger, more cost-effective rotation. As such, Indianapolis could look to cut bait and free up cap space in the process.</p><p>That said, defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo might still push to keep him. A four-man rotation featuring Tuimoloau, Latu, Kwity Paye, and a healthy Ebukam has the potential to be lethal. His fate may come down to August tape and whether the staff believes he can recapture his 2023 form.</p><h2><b>2. Experience Or Upside Behind Jonathan Taylor?</b></h2><p>The Colts backfield has long been defined by Jonathan Taylor. However, after last year’s issues with depth and durability behind him, Indianapolis retooled its running back room. Enter Khalil Herbert. He was signed to a cheap one-year deal. There’s also DJ Giddens, a fifth-round rookie who many viewed as a Day 2 talent.</p><p>Herbert brings experience and some past production from his time in Chicago and Cincinnati. That said, the reality is he struggled in 2024. He averaged just 3.6 yards per carry and failed to carve out a consistent role. At 27, he’s no longer the up-and-coming player he once was. With little guaranteed money, his roster spot is far from locked in.</p><p>Meanwhile, Giddens is creating real buzz in camp. The Kansas State product posted over 3,000 yards from scrimmage in two seasons and brings a dual-threat skill set that Herbert simply can’t match. Yes, Giddens needs refinement in pass protection. However, his big-play ability and fresh legs make him an ideal change-of-pace option behind Taylor.</p><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Khalil-Herbert-.jpg"><figcaption>Jamie Sabau-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>With the Colts likely keeping three or four backs—and one of those spots potentially earmarked for a special teams contributor—Herbert could find himself in a precarious position. Unless he vastly outperforms Giddens in preseason action, it’s hard to justify using a roster spot on a veteran with diminishing returns.</p><h2><b>Final Thoughts</b></h2><p>The 2025 Colts are clearly leaning into a new era—blending young playmakers with a few key veterans as they try to climb back into playoff contention. But with that approach comes tough decisions. Both Ebukam and Herbert were brought in with hope they’d be impactful pieces. Now, they face the reality of a team moving forward without them.</p><p>If they can rise to the challenge in training camp, they may still earn their stripes. That will be good news for the Colts and their fans as they wait to see if the Florida product can pan out and become the next face of the Indianapolis franchise.</p><p>While Richardson has been sidelined, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/colts-news-daniel-jones-update-catch-colts-fans-attention">Jones has been very good so far</a> and is impressing head coach Shane Steichen during training camp. The former No. 6 overall pick struggled mightily during his time with the Giants, but he is hoping that a change of scenery is just what he needs to get his career on track.</p><p>Even outside of the ongoing competition, missing valuable offseason reps is crippling for a player in Richardson that clearly needs a lot more experience before he is ready to lead a team. He completed just under 48% of his passes in 11 games last season with eight touchdowns and 12 interceptions, so the numbers are pretty ugly so far.</p><p>While the eye test isn’t quite as bad as the stat sheet for Richardson, there is still plenty to clean up. His footwork and accuracy needs serious work, and this injury is forcing him to miss some of the most valuable time to hone those skills before next season. They have not made the playoffs since the 2020 season. Still, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/3-colts-veterans-roles-pushed-rookies-2025">Colts have plenty of young players ready to take the next step</a>. These are the three underrated Colts who could be breakout sleepers in the 2025 NFL season.</p><p>The Colts last made the playoffs as a wildcard team in the 2020 season, losing in the Wild Card round to the Buffalo Bills. They would go 9-8 the next year before going 4-12-1 in 2022. The Colts would then draft Anthony Richardson, but have gone a combined 17-17 in those two seasons. They also still do not have a playoff berth with Richardson. The Colts still have plenty of young parts. Some players need to step up if they are going to make it to the playoffs in the 2025 season, or potentially win their first AFC South title since the 2014 season.</p><p>The Colts did not make many splashy offseason moves. They brought in Charvarius Ward in the secondary. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/colts-news-daniel-jones-update-catch-colts-fans-attention">Colts also brought in Daniel Jones at quarterback</a>. They did move on from some defensive players in the front seven, and also kicker Matt Gay. Now, new players need to break out if the Colts are going to break their playoff drought.</p><h2><b>Laiatu Latu makes an impact in his second season</b></h2><p>The Colts were tied for 25th in the NFL last year in sacks while sitting 26th in the NFL in pressure rate. Latu was a two-time first-team All-Pac-12 player in college, an All-American, and winner of the Lombardi and Ted Hendricks awards in college. He would be selected 15th overall in the 2024 NFL draft. Still, while he did make the PFWA All-Rookie team, his first season in the NFL was rather quiet.</p><p>Latu had just four sacks for a total of 23 yards last season. That places him third on the team in sacks, behind Kwity Paye and DeForest Buckner. Further, he has just five tackles for a loss, well behind Paye, Buckner, and fellow defensive lineman Grover Stewart. While Dayo Odeyingbo left in free agency, the Colts also drafted JT Tuimoloau, another defensive end, in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft.</p><p>Latu needs to step up this year with Paye and Tuimoloau on the roster. Latu did have some highlights this past season, though. He had 38 total pressures and a 14 percent pass rush win rate, which was one of the best win rates on the Colts. The<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/colts-news-major-coaching-change-shane-steichen-immunity"> Colts have also brought in a new defensive coordinator</a>, who should help Latu this upcoming season. Lou Anarumo has been brought in from the Cincinnati Bengals. He helped develop Trey Hendrickson into one of the best pass rushers in the NFL. If the Colts are going to improve on defense this year, it starts with the pass rush. That starts with Latu breaking out into a star.</p><h2><b>A rookie steps up big for the Colts</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Indianapolis-Colts-tight-end-Tyler-Warren-84-catches-the-ball-Tuesday-June-10-2025-during-NFL-Colts-mandatory-mini-camp-at-the-Indiana-Farm-Bureau-Football-Center-in-Indianapolis.-1.jpg"><figcaption>Grace Hollars/IndyStar / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/colts-news-indianapolis-locks-up-tyler-warren-4-year-rookie-contract">Colts drafted tight end Tyler Warren with the 14th overall pick in the NFL draft</a> this past season. While expectations are high for him, he may still be underrated. Some draft experts had him rated as the top tight end in the NFL draft, but he would end up being the second tight end taken. Still, he is going to be in a position to break out in a similar fashion that Brock Bowers did for the Las Vegas Raiders last season.</p><p>To begin with, Warren should be the top receiving tight end. Last season, Kyler Granson was the top receiving tight end. He had just 31 targets and 14 receptions last year for 182 yards. Meanwhile, Mo-Alie Cox brought in 12 of his 22 targets for 147 yards and one touchdown. The Colts need a big-time red zone target. Their leader in touchdowns last year was Alec Peirce, who had 37 receptions on 69 targets for 824 yards and seven scores. Still, he is not the level or red-zone target that Anthony Richardson needs.</p><p>Richardson completed just eight of 22 passes in the red zone last year with four touchdowns and two interceptions. He ran more in than he threw in the red zone with five rushing touchdowns. Josh Downs was the biggest red-zone target, but he scored just twice in the red zone last year. Meanwhile, tight ends had a combined 14 targets all season in the red zone, with two scores. Warren could outperform his draft spot if he is a big-time red zone threat, and could change the look of this Colts offense.</p><h2><b>Indianapolis has a new kicker</b></h2><p>The Colts were 20th in the NFL last year in converting field goal attempts, converting at an 83.8 percent rate this past season. Their major issue was beyond 50 yards, where they went just three for nine. That 33 percent conversion rate was one of the worst marks in the NFL this past season. Matt Gay was the primary kicker last season, but he was cut after a second year converting under 85 percent of his kicks, and seeing a decline in his ability to kick from deep.</p><p>The Colts brought back a familiar face. Spencer Shrader spent some time with the Colts this past season, playing in just one game and converting all three extra points. He would also spend time with the New York Jets and the Kansas City Chiefs last season. He was not the most accurate kicker in college, converting just 68.3 percent of his kicks in his college career, with a career long of 54 yards. Still, Shrader showed accuracy last year in the NFL. He converted on all five of his attempts at the NFL level, while also converting all nine of his extra point attempts.</p><p>Last season, the Colts lost three times by three or fewer points. Having a reliable kicker could have turned some of those into wins. If the kicking game was good enough to convert two into wins, they would have had ten wins, the same amount as the Denver Broncos and Pittsburgh Steelers, both of whom made the playoffs. Considering one of the losses was to the Houston Texans, if that becomes a win, they are division champions. Shrader was accurate last season, and he could be the difference in the Colts making a playoff run or not this year.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
