Los Angeles changed overnight after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/los-angeles-chargers/chargers-news-jim-harbaugh-hired-head-coach-michigan">signing Jim Harbaugh as head coach</a> before the 2024 season. The Chargers won 11 games during the regular season and made to the playoffs. They accomplish all of this with a talent-poor roster that was in salary cap hell after the previous regime.</p><p>As a result, Chargers fans have plenty of reasons for optimism about the future.</p><p>The Chargers have already made some solid moves during NFL free agency. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/los-angeles-chargers/chargers-news-rb-najee-harris-puts-steelers-on-blast">Los Angeles brought in several roleplayers, including Najee Harris</a> and Benjamin St-Juste. They also rebuilt their offensive line by adding Mekhi Becton and Andre James.</p><p>These moves have helped fill out the depth throughout the roster. However, the Chargers need to start making some upgrades if they want to become a contending team in the AFC.</p><p>Los Angeles will also get a lot better after the 2025 NFL Draft. They have 10 total selections, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/nfl-stories/2025-nfl-draft-order-prospects-targets">including the 22nd overall pick</a>.</p><p>The Chargers should also consider improving the team with trades. If LA adds enough talented players in one offseason, especially those who have been there and done that, they could take a huge leap forward in 2025.</p><p>But who could LA target in a trade?</p><p>Below we will explore one trade package that ESPN’s Bill Barnwell recommends the Chargers send to the Ravens to acquire tight end Mark Andrews.</p><h2><b>Bill Barnwell suggests Chargers make aggressive trade proposal for Mark Andrews</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Mark-Andrews-of-the-Ravens.jpg"><figcaption>Tommy Gilligan-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Here are the terms of Barnwell’s proposed trade before we dive into any analysis.</p><p><b>Chargers receive: </b></p><ul><li>TE Mark Andrews</li><li>2025 first-round pick (27th overall)</li><li>2025 fourth-round pick (136th overall)</li></ul><p><b>Ravens receive: </b></p><ul><li>G Zion Johnson</li><li>2025 first-round pick (22nd overall)</li></ul><p>This hypothetical trade must be music to the ears of Chargers fans.</p><p>Jim Harbaugh loves to run the football and set up play-action passes off the back of it. The Chargers have an okay tight end room at the moment (Will Dissly, Tyler Conklin) but they could really use an upgrade, especially as a pass catcher. That’s where Andrews comes in.</p><p>The perception on Mark Andrews is lower than it has been in quite some time.</p><p>Andrews had a solid 2024 campaign, hauling in 55 receptions for 673 yards and 11 touchdowns. This was the most touchdowns of Andrews’ career, but he did see his role in Baltimore’s offense diminish slightly.</p><p>There are a few reasons why Andrews’ production slipped. One was the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/baltimore-ravens/grading-derrick-henrys-2-year-16-million-contract-with-ravens">addition of RB Derrick Henry to Baltimore’s offense</a>. Naturally, when you acquire a player like Henry, you want to give him the ball whenever you can. It is obvious that Henry stole touches from multiple Ravens players, including Andrews.</p><p>The other main reason could be competition with fellow tight end Isaiah Likely. Andrews was the unquestioned top tight end in Baltimore over the past few seasons. However, Likely had a career season that mixes things up quite a bit.</p><p>Likely hauled in 42 receptions for 477 yards and six touchdowns.</p><p>It feels inevitable that Likely will eventually overtake Andrews for the top tight end spot in Baltimore.</p><p>As a result, the Ravens may view Andrews as a movable asset.</p><p>Zion Johnson is an interesting part of this trade.</p><p>Johnson may mean much more to the Ravens than he does to the Chargers. As a result, he would be an important piece in this hypothetical trade.</p><p>“The Chargers, meanwhile, have prioritized their offensive line under both the Hortiz and Tom Telesco regimes, but Johnson hasn’t lived up to expectations,” Barnwell explained. “The 2022 first-round pick has been average in his career, and there are real questions about whether L.A. will want to pick up his fifth-year option, which would guarantee him $17.6 million in 2026. Andrews is the more prominent player, but Johnson might be equally as desirable given his youth and the recent positional importance of guards.”</p><p>The Ravens do need to upgrade their offensive line, especially on the interior. Andrew Vorhees and Daniel Faalele are useful pieces, but there is hardly anyone behind them to provide depth.</p><p>If Baltimore added Johnson, they would gain a talented depth player at worst. However, Johnson has the upside necessary to potentially win a starting spot in training camp. His long-term contract situation is not ideal, but he could be a valuable patch for 2025 with some future upside.</p><p>If this trade actually happened, I’d expect it to occur during the 2025 NFL Draft.</p><p>It is difficult to anticipate how much of a difference five spots in the first round can make before the draft. However, once players start flying off the board, it could make the difference between landing a star player and missing out on him.</p><p>Perhaps the Chargers and Ravens could agree in principle to the terms of a trade and then pull the trigger on draft day if the right opportunity presents itself.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Dicker described it as “fun,” even if kids certainly made their jokes. Now, as a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/los-angeles-chargers/chargers-news-la-cameron-dicker-passes-evan-mcpherson-22-million-contract">24-year-old NFL kicker</a> with a 94% conversion rate, it does not bother him.</p><p>“Everybody just calls me ‘Dick’ now, still. I’m known as ‘Dick’ around the building,” Dicker revealed. “It’s enjoyable. I think it’s a funny thing. Growing up, it makes it funny in school for sure. No problems from me.”</p><p>When asked if considered branding himself using his last name — the interviewer dubbed him “Dicker the Kicker” — the Chargers star is not concerned about it. His focus is working with the youth and not becoming a brand.</p><p>“For me, it’s working with youth; just growing my platforms so that I can help impact youth and help fatherless kids and provide lights in dark places of the world,” he explained.</p><p>It sounds like Dicker just wants to be a “constant” in peoples’ lives. It is nice that he has found a purpose off of the football field where he can put his time and energy.</p><h2><b>Cameron Dicker’s Chargers career</b></h2><p>Cameron Dicker has had a phenomenal career with the Chargers since signing with them in 2022. He was an undrafted rookie out of Texas and had short tenures with the Los Angeles Rams and Baltimore Ravens during the offseason.</p><p>During his time at Texas, Dicker was immediately named a starter as a freshman in 2018. He made 60 of his 79 field goal attempts throughout his collegiate career.</p><p>He was then signed by the Philadelphia Eagles mid-season in 2022. Dicker filled in for an injured Jake Elliott for a few games before being released at the end of October.</p><p>The Chargers then swooped in and signed Dicker to their practice squad. He became their starting kicker shortly after and had a stellar 2023 season, during which he converted 31 of 33 field goal attempts. Dicker was also  100% on PAT attempts.</p><p>In 2024, Dicker once again only missed two field goals. He converted 29 of his 31 attempts and also 25 of 28 PAT kicks. He received a four-year contract extension with the team before the season started. And here is the Chargers’ <a href="https://www.pff.com/draft/nfl-mock-draft-simulator?ref=25116360-f6da-42a4-a875-69e7bd688d95&amp;complete=7&amp;draft_grade=B-&amp;multi=false" rel="noopener">seven-round 2025</a> NFL mock draft, according to the Pro Football Focus simulator.</p><p>The Chargers enter the draft with high hopes for the upcoming season. They made a playoff run in 2024. And a few good picks in the draft might spur them to even bigger heights this year.</p><p>Los Angeles picks at No. 22, bringing the baggage of needs at the wide receiver, tight end, and defensive line positions.</p><h2><b>Chargers get safety Malaki Starks in Round 1</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/UNIVERSITY-OF-GEORGIA-SAFETY-MALAKI-STARKS_19171e.jpg"></figure><p>It makes sense for the Chargers to go with offense in the first round. But the simulator failed brutally. Not only did they get a defensive player, but also took a guy at a position they don’t need.</p><p>Starks, a Georgia product, is a fine first-round pick for most teams. But there were several guys left on the board that made much more sense. At the top of the list, defensive tackle Walter Nolen (Mississippi) would have been the perfect pick. The Chargers also could have had Ohio State wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, or Michigan tight end Colston Loveland. In the real world, the Chargers take any of those guys over Starks.</p><p>Still Starks brings <a href="https://www.nfl.com/prospects/malaki-starks/32005354-4159-2296-384c-e3be1fb506bf" rel="noopener">a nice talent</a>, according to nfl.com.</p><p>“Three-year starter with reams of high-leverage games on his résumé,” Lance Zierlein wrote. “Starks is a versatile safety with the size and athleticism to eliminate contested catches and the speed and ball skills to shine when the action travels deep. Connection to the route is inconsistent in man and he’s baited out of position by misdirection, but better discipline and anticipation should clean that up.</p><p>“He’s not a true force player near the line and his pursuit angles can be raggedy but he gets guys down when he’s in position. Starks has feast-or-famine moments on tape and disappointed with his short-area testing at the NFL Scouting Combine. He ran well in Indianapolis, though, and was impressive in interviews with teams. He is a future starter as a movable back-end piece whose consistency will determine his floor/ceiling.”</p><p>After reading that, the swing and miss by the simulator looks ugly.</p><h2><b>At No. 55 overall, Cam Skattebo is the selection</b></h2><p>OK, this may be too early for the Arizona State product. And once again, the simulator whiffed by passing on Miami receiver Xavier Restrepo. Bad miss here. And this is especially dumb with the Chargers signing Najee Harris. PFF needs to tinker with its AI.</p><p>Still, like Starks, Skattebo has quite <a href="https://www.nfl.com/prospects/cam-skattebo/3200534b-4157-8439-e202-fa5ff0631271" rel="noopener">a bit of potential</a>.</p><p>“Carnage creator with a compact frame and elite contact balance,” Zierlein wrote. “Skattebo can break through second-level tacklers and careen off of bodies for extended yards after contact. He reads his blocks quickly and is more elusive in the early stages of the run than he’s probably given credit for.</p><p>“(Skattebo) lacks top-end speed and will have to contend with bigger, better tacklers on the next level. Skattebo’s effectiveness as a receiver out of the backfield should add to his draft value. His physicality and edge should bode well for him as a complementary back with three-down value who is capable of helping an offense wear down the defense.”</p><h2><b>Chargers get edge rusher in Round 3</b></h2><p>Oops. Another whiff pick. It’s not that SMU’s Elijah Roberts is without talent. But the Chargers would have blown their draft at this point.</p><p>Again, a talented wide receiver remained on the board in Jonah Sagaiinaea of Arizona. The Chargers will have to hope their defense makes up for a lack of threat from the wide receivers outside of Ladd McConkey.</p><p>Roberts <a href="https://www.nfl.com/prospects/elijah-roberts/3200524f-4213-4912-d3df-666b69add8d7" rel="noopener">projects as an</a> NFL backup.</p><p>“Productive base end with good play strength who continues to add weight to his frame. Roberts has chalked up stats as a standing defender but isn’t athletic enough to play as a 3-4 outside ‘backer in the NFL and might not have the brutality to play inside at three-technique despite his size,” Zierlien wrote.</p><h2><b>Finally, Round 4 brings a defensive lineman</b></h2><p>Maybe the Chargers will strike gold with J.J. Pegues of Mississippi. He is a better pick at this point than Roberts as he <a href="https://www.nfl.com/prospects/jj-pegues/32005045-4741-0041-a55c-913cbb87cab1" rel="noopener">projects as a starter</a>.</p><p>“Compact, thick-hipped defensive lineman with versatility to play multiple positions — including short-yardage running back!” Zierlein wrote. “Pegues can be hell on wheels when he’s motivated and has it cranked up. He’s quick off the ball but not explosive into first contact as consistently as he could be. He’ll beat reach blocks and double teams if he gets his technique ironed out. He has quicker hands and feet than most opponents he’ll face and has the talent to get to the other side of the line in both phases.”</p><h2><b>Sound the trumpets for a WR in Round 5</b></h2><p>Yay! The Chargers would hope that Isaac TeSlaa will develop into a late-round steal. The Arkansas product <a href="https://www.nfl.com/prospects/isaac-teslaa/32005445-5311-6936-ab44-7861b1b8f72f" rel="noopener">has decent potential</a> and stands 6-foot-4, weighing 214 pounds.</p><p>“He can mismatch smaller cornerbacks with his frame and play strength and is a reliable pass catcher when contested,” Zierlein wrote. “He builds up speed as a vertical slot but isn’t sudden enough to simply uncover as a possession slot against tight man.”</p><h2><b>Four Round 6 picks net different results</b></h2><p>The Chargers got Maryland wide receiver Taj Felton, along with tight end Jalin Conyers (Texas Tech), defensive lineman Cam’Ron Jackson (Florida), and wide receiver Chimere Dike (Florida).</p><p>Sure, flood the roster with late-round wide receivers and hope one sticks. Good strategy. Not.</p><p>The Chargers finished off with safety Dante Trader Jr. of Maryland in Round 7.</p><p><i>Overall, it turned into a classic bad draft for the Chargers. That would be cool.”</p><p>While Harbaugh didn’t coach Allen, he’s undoubtedly aware of his abilities. The wideout was selected by the Chargers in 2013 out of the University of California. In 11 seasons with Los Angeles, Allen put up very solid numbers. He compiled 100+ receptions in five of those seasons and reeled in 108 catches for 1,243 yards and seven TDs in 2023 before departing in free agency.</p><p>The Chargers haven’t made a ton of moves on the open market other <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/chargers-news-reunite-mike-williams-justin-herbert-nfl-free-agency">than bringing back Mike Williams</a>. While Ladd McConkey has emerged as Justin Herbert’s top target, running it back with a player like Allen wouldn’t be a terrible move by any means. He’d just have a different role. Perhaps LA is waiting until after the draft to explore an Allen reunion.</p><p>Williams recently posted an IG story with a picture alongside Allen with the caption “Run it back turbo,” and Allen reposted it. I mean, his numbers in a Chargers uniform speak for themselves. Sure, he’s a little bit older now, but Allen is a reliable target who knows this offense inside and out.</p><p>LA could still certainly add another weapon for Herbert through the draft. But, they should seriously consider Allen as an option as well. If the head coach is interested in it, then it must remain a possibility.</p><p>The Chargers will be looking to bounce back in Harbaugh’s second season after exiting in the Wild Card Round. For instance, rumors are floating around that the Green Bay Packers and Los Angeles Chargers are <a href="https://www.sportskeeda.com/college-football/insider-notes-ohio-state-pro-day-emeka-egbuka-s-rising-draft-stock-saints-interest-lathan-ransom" rel="noopener">heavily in the market</a> for a receiver with their first-round picks in the draft, per Sportskeeda’s Tony Pauline.</p><p>“The Green Bay Packers and Los Angeles Chargers were two teams spoken about in Columbus who will look at receivers hard in the first round,” Pauline wrote.</p><p>When looking at both teams, it’s not overly shocking that the Packers and Chargers are hoping for a chance to draft a receiver in the first round. The Chargers, however, have a potential No. 1 in Ladd McConkey, but they don’t really have an option besides him. Quentin Johnston had a much-improved second season after a two-touchdown rookie year. He could take another leap in his third year, but that’s not guaranteed.</p><p>So, between the Packers and Chargers, they could be two teams interested in a first-round receiver at the 2025 NFL Draft.</p><p>However, that’s not the only team looking to add receiver talent in the first round.</p><h2><b>Steelers among Packers, Chargers in drafting first-round receiver</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Pittsburgh-Steelers-head-coach-Mike-Tomlin.jpg"><figcaption>Joseph Maiorana-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Along with the Packers and Chargers, rumors have the Pittsburgh Steelers and a first-round receiver in the 2025 NFL Draft.</p><p>In fact, it’s a bit more of a rumor, as the Steelers reportedly met with potential first-round receiver Emeka Egbuka on Thursday night, per Pauline’s original report.</p><p>“Despite their moves this offseason . . . Egbuka had dinner with [Steelers] head coach Mike Tomlin and general manager Omar Khan on Tuesday night,” Pauline wrote.</p><p>So, even after the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/pittsburgh-steelers/steelers-news-pittsburgh-blockbuster-dk-metcalf-trade-seahawks">Steelers traded for DK Metcalf</a>, Pittsburgh could reportedly add Egbuka to their receiver room in 2025.</p><p>Without a quarterback in place for the 2025 season, maybe the Steelers are hoping for a receiver room so good that it won’t matter who’s throwing to them. That’s the only logical reason for wanting to use their first-round pick on Egbuka, unless they have plans to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/pittsburgh-steelers/nfl-rumors-steelers-insider-urgent-george-pickens-trade-message">trade George Pickens</a>.</p><p>However, considering the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/nfl-stories/afc-scout-reveals-harsh-take-on-2025-nfl-draft-quarterback-class">lackluster quarterback talent in the 2025 NFL Draft</a>, it could make sense to load up on high-end receiver talent.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He could be reunited with his former tight end from his Michigan days and also fill a hole in the offense. L.A. signed Tyler Conklin and has Will Dissly, but Loveland would jump them both on the depth chart to provide quarterback Justin Herbert with another top-tier option beyond Ladd McConkey. One can imagine him giving similar speeches to his team once everyone is back together, starting with mandatory minicamp after the draft. If 2025 is to be even more of a success than 2024, then the makeover of the Chargers will undoubtedly continue. Will it be enough for a deep postseason run? Long time franchise leader Joey Bosa was released due to his high cap number. Former first round pick Mike Williams returned to the team in free agency. Quarterback Justin Herbert is looking to continue his ascendancy into the upper echelon of NFL signal callers. Ladd McConkey had an excellent rookie season and has quickly become one of Herbert’s most trusted targets.</p><p>The pieces are there for a turnaround. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/chargers-news-rb-najee-harris-puts-steelers-on-blast">The Chargers have one of</a> the NFL’s best offensive lines, and new running back Najee Harris is looking to continue his streak of 1,000-yard seasons at Sofi Stadium. Harbaugh and Hortiz have continued to build the roster’s depth as well, as an NFL season can take its toll on even the healthiest of teams. The key is to get through this upcoming season as healthy and as deep as possible. If that happens, then a deep postseason run becomes even easier.</p><p>Even in a loaded AFC, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/chargers-news-add-weapon-justin-herbert-4-td-season">the Chargers have the talent</a> to make some major noise. The Kansas City Chiefs, one of the Bolts’ key rivals, once again lost pieces after their third straight postseason appearance. Bosa joined the Buffalo Bills in free agency, joining another conference rival. Anyone could come out of the AFC South, but it feels like it’s the Houston Texans’ division to lose. Don’t forget about the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC North. LA has already added a number of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/los-angeles-chargers/nfl-rumors-chargers-najee-harris-watch-steelers-exit-inevitable">playmakers on both sides of the ball, including RB Najee Harris</a>. They will add even more talent in the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/nfl-stories/2025-nfl-draft-order-prospects-targets">2025 NFL Draft, where they Chargers hold the 22nd overall pick</a>.</p><p>Harris did not leave Pittsburgh on good terms. He <a href="https://www.nfl.com/news/najee-harris-steelers-didn-t-have-any-identity-on-offense" rel="noopener">explained some of his frustration</a> with the Steelers in a recent interview with KCAL’s Chris Hayre.</p><p>“It was just a team where we lost Ben, we lost the O-line, we just didn’t know anything on offense really, we didn’t have any identity,” Harris said via NFL.com’s Kevin Patra. “We had a young guy coming in at QB. I was young. The team was young. I really didn’t have nobody to almost learn from on the offensive side. I think the veteran guy on that team was a two, three-year vet. And he’s still learning himself.”</p><p>Harris suggests the Steelers lost their way after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/pittsburgh-steelers/steelers-news-ben-roethlisberger-coaching-job-nfl-retirement">losing QB Ben Roethlisberger to retirement</a>. Harris also admitted that he ended up seeking the council of some of Pittsburgh’s defensive veterans.</p><p>“I’m coming in and I’m just trying to look for people to pick their brain and it was just defensive guys,” Harris continued. “So I’d go to the defensive guys and talk to them, but there wouldn’t be too much they could tell me about offensive things. So, through my years, I’ve learned a lot that only I learned first-hand. And I feel like [in L.A.], like we’ve got a lot of veterans that I can learn even more stuff from, even at the quarterback position, and the O-line position. So it was an interesting year there, I’ll just say that. Interesting year.”</p><p>Harris is not the only <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/pittsburgh-steelers/steelers-news-super-bowl-champ-brutally-honest-disheartening-culture-change">former Steelers player to question the organization’s culture</a> after losing Roethlisberger.</p><h2><b>Najee Harris should fit in nicely with the Chargers</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Najee-Harris-with-the-Steelers.jpg"><figcaption>Tommy Gilligan-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Things may have <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/pittsburgh-steelers/steelers-news-when-najee-harris-time-steelers-over">ended poorly for Harris in Pittsburgh</a>, but he has a bright future in Los Angeles.</p><p>Harris is the perfect type of running back for Jim Harbaugh’s offensive system. The Chargers love to punish opposing defenses with the running game, and Harris has the ideal build as a battering ram.</p><p>Harris is a reliable runner who will raise the floor of LA’s offense. He logged at least 250 attempts, 1,000 rushing yards, and six rushing touchdowns in each of his four seasons in Pittsburgh.</p><p>Harris does not have the game-breaking speed that other top NFL running backs have. However, he is more than capable of moving the chains and setting up play action passes for Justin Herbert.</p><p>It will be interesting to see if the Chargers target a running mate for Harris in the 2025 NFL Draft.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Well, you've come to the right place.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Los Angeles Chargers</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Though the 2025 NFL Draft is still over a month away, the Los Angeles Chargers are deep in the weeds of scouting players, including one their head coach, Jim Harbaugh, knows very well: <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/ncaa-football/michigan-football-news-wolverines-star-tight-end-2025-nfl-draft-decision" rel="noopener">tight end Colston Loveland</a>.</p><p>That’s right, while Loveland famously played his college ball for Harbaugh, being recruited by the now-Chargers coach all the way back in 2020 <a href="https://247sports.com/player/colston-loveland-46097145/" rel="noopener">as a four-star player</a>, he is technically a new player to LA’s brass, with GM Joe Hortiz and company eager to meet the top-2 TE to learn about his game and what he could bring to the organization.</p><p>Well, according to Alex Insdorf of the <i>Bolts Breakdown</i>, that meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, where the two sides can come together and see if Lovalnd would look good in a different shade of blue this fall.</p><p>Currently ranked the <a href="https://www.nflmockdraftdatabase.com/big-boards/2025/consensus-big-board-2025" rel="noopener">19th-best prospect</a> in NFL Mock Draft Database 2025 Consensus Big Board, Loveland is widely considered one of the two blue chip prospects at the tight end positon this spring, going head-to-head with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/ncaa-football/penn-state-football-news-big-ten-rival-clears-tyler-warren-analysts-te-draft-grades" rel="noopener">fellow Big Ten prospect Tyler Warren of Penn State</a>.</p><p>While Loveland isn’t the cleanest fit in Los Angeles, as the Chargers do have Will Dissly on a three-year, $14 million contract, Loveland is clearly the better player both now and long-term and could be a fixture of a passing game that needs additional help alongside Ladd McConkey.</p><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Colston-Loveland_ffb876.jpg"><figcaption>Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><h2><b>Jim Harbaugh compared Colston Loveland to Travis Kelce</b></h2><p>So what, you may ask, does Harbaugh think of his former player? Well, back in September of 2023, the then-Michigan head coach compared Loveland to Travis Kelce, <a href="https://www.maizenbrew.com/2023/11/27/23978505/michigan-football-jim-harbaugh-colston-loveland-travis-kelce-taylor-swift-ohio-state-iowa-big-ten" rel="noopener">which is about as good a comp</a> as a tight end can earn in the post-Gronk era.</p><p>Now granted, Harbaugh was probably referring to Loveland’s impact on the Wolverines’ offense as opposed to a physical comparison, as Tyler Warren looks closer to the Chiefs legend than the Michigan product. But even if that’s the case, playing that sort of role in any offense, especially future national champions, is an incredible accomplishment all the same. Maybe even... a few?</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Los Angeles Chargers</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>After <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/los-angeles-chargers/chargers-news-tight-end-move-catch-fans-attention">meeting at the team’s facilities on Thursday</a>, the Los Angeles Chargers and tight end Tyler Conklin <a href="https://x.com/MikeMcCartney7/status/1903189562316247169" rel="noopener">agreed to a new contract</a> in free agency, per his agent Mike McCartney on X, giving Justin Herbert another weapon heading into the 2025 season.</p><p>“Congrats Tyler Conklin agreeing to a 1 year deal with the Chargers,” McCartney wrote.</p><p>As a three-year player for Central Michigan, Conklin was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in 2018, playing in the purple and gold for his entire rookie contract. After his four years in Minnesota, Conklin signed with the New York Jets, spending three seasons with them.</p><p>From 2022-2024, Conklin had some of the best years of his career, posting career-high numbers in the last two seasons.</p><ul><li><b>2022:</b> 58 receptions, 552 yards, 3 TDs</li><li><b>2023:</b> 61 receptions<b>*</b>, 621 yards (career-high)<b>**</b>, 0 TDs</li><li><b>2024:</b> 51 receptions, 449 yards, 4 TDs (career-high)<b>**<br>*</b> tied for career-high<br><b>**</b> career-high</li></ul><p>With how disappointing the Chargers’ 2024 season ended, there’s clearly a plan in place to ensure 2025 goes smoother — especially in the postseason.</p><p>And in that plan, the Chargers realized they needed more of a presence from their tight end.</p><p>In 2024, Los Angeles had five tight ends start at least one game.</p><ul><li><b>Will Dissly:</b> 15 games, 8 starts</li><li><b>Stone Smartt:</b> 15 games, 2 starts</li><li><b>Tucker Fisk:</b> 9 games, 5 starts</li><li><b>Hayden Hurst:</b> 9 games, 2 starts</li><li><b>Eric Tomlinson:</b> 9 games, 1 start</li></ul><p>Now, with Conklin, the Chargers have a bit more stability at tight end, though they still lack a true leader in that role.</p><h2><b>Is Tyler Warren the Chargers’ target in 2025 NFL Draft?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Penn-State-Tyler-Warren.jpg"><figcaption>© Joe Rondone/The Republic / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Although the Chargers hold the No. 22 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, their eyes could be on Penn State tight end Tyler Warren.</p><p>Warren is arguably the top tight end in the draft class, making him a prime target for teams who need one on their roster.</p><p>And with the Chargers signing Conklin to a one-year deal in free agency, it shows they’re not overly committed to the soon-to-be 30-year-old tight end.</p><p>As both a weapon for Herbert and a beast of a tool in the run game, Warren pairs perfectly with what Jim Harbaugh looks to be constructing with the Chargers’ roster.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Now they look forward, and here is a <a href="https://www.profootballnetwork.com/mockdraft" rel="noopener">five-round post-free agency frenzy</a> NFL mock draft, according to the Pro Football Network simulator.</p><p>The Chargers are beginning to look like a team that could get serious about a Super Bowl run. They made the playoffs last year, and a good draft would go a long way toward getting them in the big mix in 2025.</p><p>They enter the draft with needs at defensive tackle, tight end, wide receiver, cornerback, and center. And they have a full set of picks in the first five rounds. Here is what the simulator said they would do with their first pick.</p><h2><b>Chargers grab TE Colston Loveland in Round 1</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/University-of-Michigan-TE-Colston-Loveland.jpg"></figure><p>This is a somewhat questionable pick by the simulator. Game-changing wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan remained on the board. Also, Wide receiver Luther Burden III could have picked. Furthermore, defensive tackle Derrick Harmon — at the Chargers’ top position of need — got passed by. And to top it off, Ohio State defensive tackle Tyleik Williams didn’t go to Los Angeles.</p><p>But here’s what the Chargers get with the Michigan product. Loveland has a lot of potential with a 6-foot-5, 248-pound frame.</p><p>“Colston Loveland is a long and lean tight end prospect with excellent overall athleticism,” PFN wrote. “He is a natural receiving tight end who was grossly under-used throughout his collegiate career. Loveland is a smooth mover with good speed off the line of scrimmage. He is a long strider who quickly chews up grass and gets down the field. He flashes very good overall straight-line speed and can stretch the seam vertically.”</p><p>But there are question marks with Loveland. Blocking strength is one of them.</p><p>“Even though the NFL is a passing league, tight ends are still required to block,” PFN wrote. “And that is where Lovland leaves you wanting more. He does not have sufficient strength at the point of attack and does not generate movement when attached. He is a position-and-wall-off blocker who does play with effort in this phase.</p><p>“But ultimately, he is best used as a detached weapon rather than your traditional “Y” tight end. Overall, Loveland has an exciting receiving profile that is a perfect fit for today’s NFL. His lack of physicality as a blocker may limit him as an every-down player. But his pass-game upside will still have NFL decision-makers giddy.”</p><h2><b>Colston Loveland believes in his abilities</b></h2><p>So it depends on what the Chargers want out of this player. If catching passes is the only thing, they’ll be happy. Loveland said he <a href="https://www.chargers.com/news/colston-loveland-mock-draft-jim-harbaugh-combine" rel="noopener">likes the passing game</a>, according to chargers.com.</p><p>“I would say I’m one of the best route runners in this draft,” Loveland said. “(And) I truly believe that. I think I got great hands. Obviously, I got a lot to work on throughout my whole game, but I feel like I’m pretty polished and just excited to keep getting better.”</p><p>Daniel Jeremiah of the NFL Network said Loveland should be a top tight end target in the draft.</p><p>“Two different styles there with him and Tyler Warren, but he’s someone who can really, really run, can get in and out of breaks, fluid for a bigger guy,” Jeremiah said. “He can go get it with a huge catch radius, he’s tough physical after the catch. Then in the run game, he does enough, he stays connected and shows want to. He’s one of the top 10 players in the draft for me.”</p><h2><b>Chargers trade up in Round 2 to the No. 42 spot</b></h2><p>Maybe the simulator realized the first-round decision to pass on a defensive tackle could be an issue. The Chargers traded their second and third-round picks to move up and get Kenneth Grant of Michigan. He’s a 6-3, 331-pound beast.</p><p>“Kenneth Grant is one of the most explosive defensive tackle prospects over 330 lbs to enter the NFL Draft,” PFN wrote. “He fits into a rare player category with a high-level blend of size, speed, and power. His lower body strength is enough to demand significant attention from opposing offensive lines on a snap-to-snap basis. His physical profile is ideal for eating blockers to free up his linemates and the linebackers navigating traffic behind him.”</p><p>Wait, there’s more. This dude sounds like the real deal.</p><p>“What makes Grant especially dangerous is that he also has the awareness and hand usage to shed blockers against the run,” PFN wrote. “Ultimately, Grant has the upside of becoming one of the best run defenders in the NFL and producing as a pass rusher. His active hands and bursts make him an overwhelming matchup for most interior offensive linemen. Grant has the ceiling in the NFL to become a top-five defensive tackle.”</p><p>OK, let’s give the simulator credit. If the Chargers can get this level of talent in the second round, the first-round choice of Loveland makes perfect sense.</p><h2><b>Round 4 brings a Jim Harbaugh player</b></h2><p>Talk about a perfect match. Arizona State running back Cameron Skattebo seems like an awesome fit for the way Jim Harbaugh does business in the NFL. Here is what NFL.com had to say about the <a href="https://www.nfl.com/prospects/cam-skattebo/3200534b-4157-8439-e202-fa5ff0631271" rel="noopener">5-9, 219-pound bruiser</a>.</p><p>“Carnage creator with a compact frame and elite contact balance,” Lance Zierlein wrote. “Skattebo can break through second-level tacklers and careen off of bodies for extended yards after contact. He reads his blocks quickly and is more elusive in the early stages of the run than he’s probably given credit for. Skattebo’s effectiveness as a receiver out of the backfield should add to his draft value.”</p><p>Not bad for the fourth round.</p><h2><b>A wide receiver caps off the draft for the Chargers</b></h2><p>This turned out to be a decent finish for the Chargers. San Jose State product Nick Nash has speed, reliable hands, and slot versatility.</p><p><i>Because of landing a premier defensive tackle in Round 2, it saved the draft for the Chargers.
