That’s crystal clear – we don’t have a lot of depth. We hope to address that at some point in the draft, as well,” Bowles said. “We didn’t sign many in free agency. We signed (Kindle) Vildor, we signed Bryce (Hall) – he’s coming off an injury, and we’ve got to see what Vildor can do, obviously. While there were plenty of questions to answer this offseason, the franchise made a big decision by giving wide receiver Chris Godwin a new contract. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/buccaneers-news-baker-mayfield-admission-chris-godwin-brutal-injury">Godwin suffered a season-ending ankle injury</a> halfway through the 2024 campaign, but the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/buccaneers-news-chris-godwin-leaves-20-million-table-66-million-contract">Buccaneers still gave him a three-year, $66 million deal</a> to keep him in Tampa Bay.</p><p>So, the Buccaneers duo of Godwin and Mike Evans remains intact, giving Baker Mayfield ample weapons on the offense.</p><p>However, there is a chance Godwin <a href="https://x.com/JoeBucsFan/status/1907041177863344321" rel="noopener">might not be available</a> when the season begins, as JoeBucsFan mentioned on X.</p><p>‘Not sure yet, says Todd Bowles, if Chris Godwin will be available Week 1. He hopes he will be. Bowles says cornerback Bryce Hall (same dislocated ankle injury) is running full speed, which is encouraging all around.’</p><p>Todd Bowles admits he “hopes” Godwin will be ready for the opener, although there is no clear indication for the time being.</p><p>Back on March 23, General Manager Jason Licht <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/tampa-bay-buccaneers/buccaneers-news-buccaneers-gm-drops-encouraging-chris-godwin-injury-update">had an optimistic update on Godwin</a>, saying he would “never bet against Chris.”</p><p>“I’m feeling very good about it,” Licht said. “He’s hitting all of his milestones. He’s hitting all of his markers. He’s where he’s supposed to be. We’re not going to try to set any records for the fastest rehab because we want to make sure everything’s done right and just get him out there for the regular season. I would never bet against Chris.”</p><p>Godwin played in just seven games before suffering the injury, although he had 50 catches for 576 yards and five scores up until that point.</p><p>The 2025 NFL schedule has not yet been released, so it remains unclear who – and when – the Buccaneers will play to begin the year. He studied journalism and communication at UConn.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Green Bay Packers</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The NFL Draft is under a month away, and although the Green Bay Packers had a strong 2024 season, they are looking to take that next step and make a deep playoff run, and NFL.com draft analyst Chad Reuter said that they <a href="https://www.nfl.com/news/2025-nfl-draft-six-win-win-first-round-trades-teams-should-make" rel="noopener">should trade up</a> with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to target a cornerback, wide receiver or edge rusher.</p><p>“Although the Packers made the playoffs with an 11-6 record last season, they finished third in the NFC North and were one-and-done in postseason play,” Chad Reuter of NFL.com said. “Shoring up a couple of roster spots through the draft could help them return to the top of the division and clinch them their first home playoff game since 2021. To secure one of this year’s top CBs (Jahdae Barron), WRs (Emeka Egbuka, Matthew Golden) or edge defenders (Donovan Ezeiruaku, Mike Green, Shemar Stewart, Mykel Williams) — whomever from their wish list is still available at No. 19 overall – the Pack put in a call to their former NFC Central rival to climb up a few runs on the first-round ladder.”</p><p>In the proposed deal, the Packers would move from No. 23 to No. 19 in the first round while giving up a third-round pick (No. 87 overall) and getting a fifth-round pick (No. 157 overall) in return. Reuter mentioned cornerback Jahdae Barron, wide receivers Emeka Egbuka and Matthew Golden, and edge defenders Donovan Ezeiruaku, Mike Green, Shemar Stewart and Mykel Williams.</p><p>It is an interesting suggestion, but it would seem likely that at least one of those players would drop to No. 23. If the Packers have all of those players rated similarly, it could be smart to hold off on trading up with the Buccaneers. The Packers also have not shown to be an organization that is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/nfl-stories/nfl-rumors-packers-chargers-looking-hard-receiver-first-round">aggressive when it comes to drafting wide receivers</a> in the first round, so trading up for one would be a deviation from their previous actions. It seems that the Patriots were also at the center of negotiations for another player who they did not end up acquiring.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/tampa-bay-buccaneers/nfl-rumors-why-buccaneers-wont-use-franchise-tag-chris-godwin">Buccaneers entered NFL free agency determined to retain Chris Godwin</a>. Throughout the process, Tampa Bay <a href="https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/bucs-gm-jason-licht-chris-godwin-turned-down-a-team-that-was-writing-him-blank-checks" rel="noopener">fended off one unnamed team</a> who were making aggressive moves to try and land Chris Godwin in free agency.</p><p>“There were several teams that inquired but there was one that kept writing him blank checks,” Licht said. “We got to a point of what we could do in order to keep everything together and add some pieces here, and he took it.”</p><p>Licht did not name the team in question. However, Smith noted that many around the league believe the Patriots were the team to make lucrative offers for Godwin.</p><p>This does line up with other rumors that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-england-patriots/nfl-rumors-patriots-chris-godwin-hard-buccaneers-return">New England did everything they could to try and lure in Chris Godwin</a> during NFL free agency.</p><p>Ultimately, the Buccaneers re-signed Chris Godwin on a <a href="https://bsky.app/profile/rapsheet1.bsky.social/post/3ljzwsmgksc2k" rel="noopener">three-year contract worth $66 million</a> according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. And while his sack total decreased by nearly 50% from 2022 to 2023, ending the year with double-digit sacks is always a positive. Not only did Reddick have an unreal year, but the Eagles had four players finish 2024 with double-digit sacks: Haason Reddick (16), Javon Hargrave (11), Josh Sweat (11), and Brandon Graham (11).</p><p>Now, looking at Haason Reddick’s fit with the Buccaneers’ defense alongside Calijah Kancey, Vita Vea, and Lavonte David, the 30-year-old could revert to his former self after signing with Tampa in free agency.</p><p>And Jason Licht believed the hype enough to sign him to the Buccaneers defense.</p><p>“He’s very, very determined to prove to everybody that [2024] was a fluke, that he’s still the same player,” Licht added. “He’s a great guy. Reddick delivered one sack with the New York Jets, after producing four straight double-digit campaigns. But he called his 2024 Jets run “bizarre” in honest fashion.</p><p>Reddick addressed the media for the first time since his Bucs addition. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/tampa-bay-buccaneers/buccaneers-news-haason-reddick-14-million-contract-after-busting-with-jets">The Buccaneers signed Reddick to one year and $14 million</a> on Monday during legal tampering day. His arrival, though, comes amid a well-documented nasty contract dispute with the AFC East franchise. That includes <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/new-york-jets/jets-news-haason-reddick-situation-takes-wild-turn-agent-surprising-move">Reddick holding out and a surprise move by his agency</a>.</p><p>“Very bizarre,” were two words Reddick described about his Jets run, per Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times Friday. But Reddick wasn’t <a href="https://www.tampabay.com/sports/bucs/2025/03/14/new-buc-haason-reddick-ready-fresh-start-after-weird-year-with-jets/" rel="noopener">through with his honesty</a> directed at the Jets.</p><p>“It’s just a fresh start,” Reddick said of his Buccaneers addition. “I know everybody is worried about last year, but last year is last year. I’m here now. Different mindset. Different space.”</p><p>He fired off one more message regarding his botched run with the Jets.</p><p>“Just ready to put the past behind me and continue to move forward, and what better place to do it than here?” Reddick said.</p><h2><b>Can Haason Reddick thrive with Buccaneers after Jets debacle? </b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Haason-Reddick.jpg"><figcaption>Ed Mulholland-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Reddick played like a game-wrecking pass rusher not long ago. He emerged as one of the toasts of the City of Brotherly Love. Reddick delivered dominating pass rushing production with the Philadelphia Eagles — including producing 16 sacks during their 2022 NFC title run.</p><p>The Eagles and Reddick, however, dealt with their own falling out that led to the Jets trade of 2024. Reddick eventually flopped with the Jets following his lengthy contract dispute. How will things become different in Tampa Bay?</p><p>“Just the fit,” Reddick said, per Stroud. “After talking to Footey (outside linebackers coach Larry Foote), after talking to Coach (Todd) Bowles, just their plan for using me here. That was very intriguing, something I really needed.”</p><p>But working with Bowles and the two-time Super Bowl winning Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Foote weren’t the only selling points for Reddick.</p><p>“Outside of that, I felt this was a team that was a couple of short pieces away,” Reddick shared. “I felt like I could come bring my knowledge, bring my abilities, blend with the guys that are already here. You’ve got great pieces.”</p><p>Reddick cited All-Pro nose tackle Vita Vea and edge rusher Yaya Diaby as two future teammates he’s excited to work with. And with wideout Chris Godwin returning to the team on a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/tampa-bay-buccaneers/buccaneers-news-chris-godwin-leaves-20-million-table-66-million-contract">$66 million extension</a>, the Buccaneers are anticipating a deep playoff run.</p><p>In addition to Godwin, Tampa Bay will <a href="https://x.com/RapSheet/status/1899995321997889907" rel="noopener">also re-sign</a> backup quarterback Kyle Trask on a one-year, $2.787 million contract, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport on X.</p><p>It’s wild to think that Trask and Mayfield engaged in a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/tampa-bay-buccaneers/buccaneers-todd-bowles-updates-timeline-baker-mayfield-kyle-trask">quarterback competition</a> during the 2023 preseason. But that really happened. Mayfield, obviously, won the job and went on to throw for 4,044 yards with 28 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. It was his best NFL season until he topped it in 2024 by completing 71.4 percent of his passes for 4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns and 16 interceptions.</p><h2><b>Kyle Trask will return as the Buccaneers’ backup</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Kyle-Trask.jpg"><figcaption>Kim Klement Neitzel-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Still Trask was given the opportunity to compete for the starting job. That’s largely because the Buccaneers took him in the second round with the 64th overall pick in the 2021 draft. Trask knew he’d be sitting when he first arrived in Tampa Bay as the team had Tom Brady as its starter.</p><p>But after Brady retired for good following the 2022 season, the Buccaneers brought in Baker and made him earn the QB1 job in camp. That meant beating out Trask. Which he did. Mayfield was rewarded for his excellent 2023 campaign with a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/tampa-bay-buccaneers/grading-baker-mayfield-contract-buccaneers">three-year, $100 million deal</a> that he managed to outperform last year.</p><p>Entering his fifth season in the league, Trask has settled in as a backup. He has yet to start a game, playing behind Brady and Mayfield. He’s made seven appearances but only completed four of 11 passes for 28 yards. Still, the Buccaneers clearly feel confident in Trask as their number two.</p><p>Last season, Tampa Bay had the third-best passing offense in football, averaging 250.4 yards per game. And the team accomplished that with Godwin missing 10 games due to a horrific <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/tampa-bay-buccaneers/buccaneers-news-baker-mayfield-admission-chris-godwin-brutal-injury">season-ending injury</a> and veteran receiver Mike Evans sitting out three games.</p><p>The Buccaneers won the NFC South for the fourth straight year and reached the playoffs with a 10-7 record. After a brutal knee injury ended a productive season, the veteran is returning to Tampa. But Adam Schefter reports that another team was hot on his tail during the tampering period. The New England Patriots were interested in a free agency deal with Chris Godwin to <a href="https://bsky.app/profile/mark-daniels.bsky.social/post/3ljzy4fcvis25" rel="noopener">fill their wide receiver need</a>.</p><p>“Adam Schefter on Chris Godwin: ‘The Patriots were coming at him very hard,’ Mark Daniels posted on BlueSky. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Godwin “left a ton on the table” by taking a $66 million deal.</p><p>Last season, Drake Maye showed flashes that he can be the quarterback of the future for the Patriots. But his offensive line and wide receivers let him down all season long. Ja’Lynn Polk was one of the worst wide receivers in the league in his rookie year, only posting 87 yards on 33 targets.</p><p>Bringing in Chris Godwin would have made a lot of sense for the Patriots. Not only does he fill their biggest need, but he is the veteran presence the offense could use moving forward. But he has returned to the Buccaneers on a three-year deal to reunite with Baker Mayfield and Mike Evans.</p><h2><b>Where should the Patriots turn?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Chris-Godwin-with-Tampa-Bay-Buccaneers.jpg"><figcaption>Matthew Hinton-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Godwin is far from the only veteran wide receiver who has spurned the Patriots this offseason. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/bengals-news-zac-taylor-breaks-silence-tee-higgins-franchise-tag-decision">Tee Higgins did not make it to the legal tampering period, as he had the franchise tag</a> placed on him. Davante Adams signed with the Rams, DK Metcalf was traded to the Steelers, and Marquise Brown returned to the Chiefs.</p><p>The good news for the Patriots is that they have the fourth overall pick in April’s draft. The bad news is that there are no elite receivers available. They do not have to draft a receiver, as they have so many needs to fill. Stefon Diggs and Amari Cooper are available as veteran options but they need a true number one receiver.</p><p>The only chance the Patriots have to land a true number one <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/bengals-news-zac-taylor-breaks-silence-tee-higgins-franchise-tag-decision">this offseason is trading for Tee Higgins</a>. Even though he has the franchise tag on him, the Bengals could trade him if they cannot agree on a contract. That would be the big swing Eliot Wolf needs to win back the faith of the fanbase. Chris Godwin is one of those players, as he recently <a href="https://bsky.app/profile/rapsheet1.bsky.social/post/3ljzwsmgksc2k" rel="noopener">signed a three-year deal</a> with the team, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.</p><p>“Chris Godwin back to Bucs 3 years 66M chance to make 24 deal done by tory dandy. 44M guaranteed at signing,” Rapoport wrote on Bluesky.</p><p>Rapoport noted that Godwin left $20 million on the table with his contract.</p><p>Godwin has been the No. 2 option at receiver for the Buccaneers since being with the franchise, but his year was cut short last season after suffering a season-ending injury. The hope is that Godwin makes a full recovery and is ready to go for the Buccaneers at the start of next season.</p><p>The Buccaneers did all they could to re-sign Godwin, and they know that he’s an important part of the team. It’s been a good day for the team aside from Godwin, as they agreed to a three-year, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/tampa-bay-buccaneers/buccaneers-news-baker-mayfield-love-22-million-contract-given-17-game-starter">$22 million deal with guard Ben Bredeson</a>, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.</p><p>With Bredeson in the lineup, they went from the worst rushing team in 2023 to being the fourth-best in 2024 with 2,356 rushing yards. Bredeson had a run block rate of 70.5%, which was 19th among guards in the league with 1,000 or more offensive snaps.</p><p>The Buccaneers also signed Hasson Reddick, and they’ll get a boost on their defensive line with his play. The team is definitely ready to make another playoff next season as they bring back their core group and add more pieces. Midway through last season it didn’t look like they would make the playoffs, but they locked in and went on a run during the second part of the year.</p><p>It wouldn’t be a surprise if they started the season as favorites to win the division once again.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
