It begs the question: Has Diggs played his last Dallas game? Owner Jerry Jones gave <a href="https://x.com/JoeJHoyt/status/1983170956249252087">an honest take</a>, according to a post on X by Joseph Hoyt.</p><p>“Jerry Jones was asked on @1053thefan if he thinks there’s a scenario where Trevon Diggs has played his last game with the Cowboys. “I don’t see that today at all.”</p><p>Hoyt <a href="https://x.com/JoeJHoyt/status/1983170715009593572" rel="noopener">also posted this</a> comment from Jones.</p><p>“Diggs’ biggest problem is he’s injured, and it’s not the same knee he was doing his rehab with. That’s his No. 1 challenge. Unfortunately, he’s got a handful of challenges here that are injury-related.”</p><h2><b>Cowboys’ CB Trevon Diggs seems to have uncertain future</b></h2><p>Jones said he expects Diggs to be back in a Cowboys uniform before the season ends. That comes <a href="https://www.dallascowboys.com/news/cowboys-expect-cb-trevon-diggs-to-return-this-season" rel="noopener">despite the IR designation</a>, according to dallascowboys.com</p><p>“We look at it [as] more four games,” Jones said. “The biggest thing with him was just getting him to where he can practice day in and day out. He’s had two previous knee injuries that were significant. And they creep up on him during the week and bother him.”</p><p>“We just felt between the concussion and the knees that we just needed to get him the opportunity to be 100%. And then I think he can really be helpful to us.”</p><p>There is talk that the Cowboys <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/46718734/nfl-dallas-cowboys-dak-prescott-trevon-diggs-sam-williams" rel="noopener">might move on</a> from Diggs, according to ESPN.</p><p>“Diggs has not made much of an impact since signing his extension in 2023,” Todd Archer wrote. “He tore his left ACL that year and missed 15 games. [And] he missed six games last season and needed a chondral-tissue graft in January. He saw a $500,000 reduction in his base salary because he opted to skip the Cowboys’ offseason program.</p><p>“At his best, Diggs was a quarterback-baiting interception machine, a Pro Bowler. But it has been some time since he has been that guy. So it should come as no surprise that the blowout loss to the Broncos left Brian Schottenheimer tossing and turning, according to a post on X by Jon Machota.</p><p>“Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer: “I didn’t sleep a wink last night. I tossed and turned all night. [And] I played the game over in my mind a thousand times, things I could’ve done different, things I could’ve done better. I know a lot of our players did that as well.”</p><p>It turned into a rough afternoon for the Cowboys as the Broncos ran over them for a 44-24 victory. However, coaches losing sleep over games likely won’t earn a smidge of sympathy from the fans.</p><h2><b>Cowboys trying to find a consistent path</b></h2><p>It may not be a good thing that Schottenheimer <a href="https://www.dallascowboys.com/news/dak-schotty-frustrated-at-inconsistent-cowboys-it-s-unacceptable?utm_source=bleacherreport&amp;utm_medium=referral" rel="noopener">took the blowout loss</a> as an opportunity to toss his coaches under the bus.</p><p>“When you look at it, I don’t think any of us coached or played well enough,” said Schottenheimer. “We did not play well. We did not coach well. I wasn’t very good today. I don’t think [Matt Eberflus] thinks he was very good today. Klayton [Adams] doesn’t think he was very good today.</p><p>“We’ll look at it. And we’ve got an extra day this week to get ready for Arizona, and that’s what we’re gonna do.”</p><p>And it doesn’t help Schottenheimer that his quarterback-leader isn’t happy.</p><p>“Yeah, I’m surprised,” said Dak Prescott. “I’m sure that’s a good word to use. Frustrated as well — frustrating. What we’ve been doing, what we’re capable of doing, didn’t really ever get going.</p><p>“We’ve got to be better in everything that we do. Doing it — getting a trade — takes opportunities and plays away from somebody else. Forget a trade. Do more, right? Shut that talk up, whether it be the offense or whether it be the defense? Whatever position group that you guys are alluding to, step up and shut the talk up.”</p><p>The Cowboys should feel better about themselves after this week’s game. They get the Cardinals at home for a Monday night contest, and should put up 35-45 points in a blowout win. Look no further than their offseason trade of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/green-bay-packers/packers-news-micah-parsons-drops-goat-take-on-aaron-rodgers-after-drubbing-him-steelers" rel="noopener">star edge rusher Micah Parsons</a> to the Green Bay Packers. </p><p>Whether justified or controversial, owner Jerry Jones is never afraid to shake things up, and with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/dallas-cowboys/cowboys-news-prescott-sends-message-teammats-amid-possible-trades" rel="noopener">the NFL Trade Deadline approaching</a>, another trade could be on the horizon — at least that’s what Dallas Morning News columnist Tim Cowlishaw is advocating for.</p><p>Shockingly, the Cowboys are 3-4-1 and at least in the conversation for a playoff spot due to their second-ranked scoring offense. Led by quarterback Dak Prescott, Dallas is averaging 30.8 points per game. Their success could lead Dallas’ front office to execute a deal to improve their defense in hopes of a second-half playoff push, or, according to Cowlishaw, <a href="https://www.dallasnews.com/sports/cowboys/2025/10/27/george-pickens-trade-dallas-cowboys-nfl-deadline-rumors/" rel="noopener">trade away their leading receiver</a>, George Pickens, to maximize his value. </p><p>Pickens is in the middle of a career season with Dallas, tied for ninth in the NFL in targets and ranking third in receiving yards and first in yards after the catch. So why would Dallas trade away Prescott’s top target after acquiring him for a 2026 third-round pick and 2027 fifth-round pick from the Pittsburgh Steelers?</p><p>“Simple,” Cowlishaw states. “Dallas cannot afford to think about paying him after this season. With the numbers he has put up, all while not causing any of the disruptions that made the Steelers eager to move on without him, he’s a $30-million-a-year receiver. Easy. And if you think the franchise tag is an option, it projects at $28 million next season. In 2026, Dak Prescott has a $74 million salary cap number, according to overthecap.com. Lamb carries a $38.6 million figure. Javonte Williams is making a whopping $3 million this year and is deserving of at least a decent running back wage. But you want to add $28 million more for another wide receiver, even a really good one?”</p><p>Pickens is in the final year of his rookie contract, thus making Cowlishaw bullish on paying him. Pair that with the Parsons trade, and Cowlishaw believes the Cowboys should double down on their investment in getting younger, improving the defense, and avoiding the trap of a potential playoff push. </p><p>“The notion of winning by scoring at least 30 points every game is a failed exercise, ” Cowlishaw writes. “And thinking about ways to keep Pickens is the same as paying no attention to what happened on defense last year, what’s happening on defense this year, and what this defense will look like in 2026.”</p><p>The Cowboys’ defense is allowing 31.6 points per game, the second-worst clip in the league. However, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith made an urgent demand to Jones about the tragic defense.</p><p>A trio of rookie players helped the Denver Broncos to a 44-24 rout of the Cowboys on Sunday. Running back R.J. Harvey, receiver Pat Bryant, and cornerback Jahdae Barron helped leave the Cowboys in shambles.</p><p>And the Cowboys’ defense <a href="https://www.espn.com/video/clip/_/id/46745370" rel="noopener">took the brunt</a> of the blame, according to ESPN.</p><p>“What if you went out and got [Bengals DE Trey Hendrickson] for those late first-round picks, which are really second-round picks?” Smith said. “You got that brother in your stable. What could that do for you?”</p><h2><b>Cowboys’ defense needs improvement</b></h2><p>Smith said the Cowboys can definitely make strides with the right trade. Hendrickson is the case in point, but also Maxx Crosby and others. He scoffed at the notion that a trade wouldn’t help.</p><p>“You telling me nothing?” Smith said. “With (DeMarvion) Overshown coming back. With some of the other cats you’ve got in place. DaRon Bland and those brothers. You trying to tell me you can’t do anything?</p><p>“You got to try something when you have an offense this prolific. You don’t need a prolific defense. You need a decent defense. Literally, a middle-of-the-road defense could propel the Cowboys to their first NFC Championship game in 30 years. That could happen, OK?”</p><p>But are the Cowboys really a quick one-man trade fix?</p><p>Quarterback Dak Prescott said <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/46744502/nfl-dallas-cowboys-dak-prescott-jadeveon-clowney-trevon-diggs" rel="noopener">soul-searching is needed</a>, according to ESPN.</p><p>“Just the old saying: ‘Adversity reveals character and also builds it,'” Prescott said. “And so, who are we? And I just challenged everybody, myself included, to look in the mirror. Are we giving enough? Are you giving enough through the week, through your preparation, and particularly on game day, to make sure that you’re giving your best performance? I know the coaches. I know the men in that building. I know how pissed we all are from this, and I know the way we’re going to get back to work and be ready for Monday night.</p><p>“So it’s a hell of a business we’re in. It’s a tough business, but I wouldn’t choose anything else. The 44-24 rout at the hands of Denver was never really close, but sportsbooks billed that Broncos at just 2.5-point favorites. What ended up being a disastrous blowout on the road, we’ll take a look at some of the parties that could be to blame on the Dallas Cowboys side for this loss.</p><p>With the loss, the Cowboys move into second place in the NFC East, holding the edge over the Washington Commanders thanks to their Week 4 tie against the Packers. They still have to face the Chiefs, Lions, Chargers, Commanders, and Giants before the Regular Season concludes, so the Cowboys will certainly need to improve their play heading into the latter half of the season.</p><p>There are no significant injuries to report for the Cowboys’, aside from DB Trevon Diggs continuing to miss time due to a concussion. Looking ahead to Week 9, let’s see what the Cowboys could build upon from their last loss.</p><h2>Cowboys most to blame for Week 8 loss vs. Broncos</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Denver-Broncos-linebacker-Alex-Singleton-49-tackles-Dallas-Cowboys-quarterback-Dak-Prescott-4.jpg"><figcaption>© Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p><b>Dak Prescott’s 2 interceptions, 19/31 passing completions</b></p><p>Most losses in the NFL will either come back to coaching or to the quarterback and veteran leader Dak Prescott is almost always the first to accept blame for any of his team’s shortcomings. It’s what makes him such a great leader and what has ultimately led to a great year for Prescott thus far, <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/2577417/dak-prescott">ranking second</a> with 2,069 passing yards and leading the NFL in QBR (79.5).</p><p>Still, his performance against an elite Broncos’ defense was arguably his worst of the season, matching a season-low 188 passing yards from Week 1. His two interceptions on Sunday were also his first since Week 3 against Chicago, marring an otherwise great run that included 13 passing touchdowns during that stretch.</p><p>Dak Prescott should have an opportunity to bounce back against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 9, but there’s no question that his play against the Broncos directly resulted in the offense failing to move downfield for most of the game. Look for a much stronger showing in Week 9 as CeeDee Lamb has been due for a big showing.</p><p><b>Jerry Jones and the looming trade deadline</b></p><p>Since losing All-Pro Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers, Jerry Jones has been adamant about his intentions with the defense and the future direction of the roster. Many fans thought that Jones would be aggressive in the free agent and trade market to bulk up the defense, but <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/dallas-cowboys/cowboys-news-jerry-jones-rambling-take-pathetic-defense-will-leave-your-head-spinning">Jones has failed to make any significant moves</a> with the Nov. 4 deadline right around the corner.</p><p>While Jones continues to sing the same tune, the defense continues to see its woes from an <a href="https://www.dallascowboys.com/team/injury-report/">injury standpoint</a>. DB Trevon.Diggs has now missed two weeks with a concussion and new acquisition DT Kenny Clark was has been dealing with an elbow injury and safety Donovan Wilson was out last week (elbow/shoulder). While Jones may think the defense is right where it needs to be, injuries and issues with depth are likely to plague most teams.</p><p>Coming up on the Nov. 6 deadline, it’ll be interesting to see if <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nfl/dallas-cowboys/cowboys-rumors-jay-glazer-crosby-trade-report-suggests-jerry-jones-lying">Jerry Jones decides to make a blockbuster move amidst all the trade rumors</a>. They’ve allowed 30 or more points to opponents in five of their first eight games.</p><p>While the offense is humming and able to keep up with other teams on the scoreboard, it won’t be long until the defense completely collapses and things become unsustainable on the offensive side of the ball.
