The vast majority of the New England Patriots’ starters didn’t play during Friday’s preseason finale against the Tennessee Titans. The Patriots’ play certainly resembled that, as they fell 23-7. Their offensive line was worrisome again, though none of their regular starters played. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/patriots-news-bailey-zappe-gets-100-real-amid-rumors-of-qb-drama-with-mac-jones" rel="noopener">Bailey Zappe had a disastrous</a> night, completing 8-of-15 passes for 57 yards and fumbled three times as he played for much of the night.</p><p>Zappe’s performance was exemplary of a horrid night for the offense. The Patriots recorded just 79 total yards of offense on 42 plays. For those of you who can’t do the math, that comes to fewer than two yards per play.</p><p><i>Yikes!</i></p><p>There were a few positives for the Patriots on Friday, though. So, let’s highlight those players that made a good final case for a roster spot as cutdown day is just a few days away on Aug. 29.</p><h2><b>4. Ronnie Perkins</b></h2><p>The 2021 third-round pick seemed to be all over the place when he was on the field on Friday.</p><p>Perkins recorded nine total tackles (six solo) with a tackle for loss. While the linebacker didn’t get a sack, he recorded a quarterback hit and recorded some pressures. Late in the first half, Perkins threw up just a moment before the snap on a 3rd-and-1. In his rookie season, Perkins was a gameday scratch for the first 13 games of the season before getting place don injured reserve. The Patriots can certainly use depth on the edge, so Perkins showing something on Friday is a good sign.</p><h2><b>3. Calvin Munson</b></h2><p>If Perkins was everywhere, Calvin Munson wasn’t too far behind.</p><p>The inside linebacker had 10 tackles (six solo) and one tackle for loss. That tackle helped the Patriots make the Titans settle for a field goal.</p><p>The Patriots’ inside linebackers are major question marks after Ja’Whaun Bentley and Jahlani Tavai. Munson could end up being the top inside linebacker on the roster after those two.</p><h2><b>2.  Sam Roberts</b></h2><p>The second-year defensive tackle was also active on Friday. Sam Roberts recorded seven tackles (four solo) with two tackles for loss. The 2022 sixth-round pick had a strong performance against the Green Bay Packers last week as well, constantly disrupting what the Packers were trying to do as he had a team-high six tackles in the game.</p><h2><b>1. Kayshon Boutte</b></h2><p>Kayshon Boutte didn’t show up on the stat sheet on Friday night, but for good reason.</p><p>The sixth-round rookie receiver started and never returned after playing on the Patriots’ opening offensive drive. That’s a very strong sign that he’s on track to make the roster as New England kept many of its regulars off the field on Friday.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/patriots-news-new-england-bill-belichick-nfl-draft-kayshon-boutte" rel="noopener">Boutte appeared to be</a> far from a roster lock at the start of the preseason, having a complicated few weeks during spring practice and was outshined by Demario Douglas in the first few weeks of training camp. But he’s had stronger practices over the last few weeks and had an impressive 42-yard touchdown grab in last week’s preseason game.</p><p>So, put Boutte on your final 53-man roster projections.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Why is this even relevant?”</i> Mills asked. <i>“You would think we should work on building up these young players rather than tear them down before they even start their careers.”</i></p><p>Boutte, who was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/patriots-news-kayshon-boutte-nfl-draft" rel="noopener">taken by the Patriots</a> in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft as the class’ 87th overall selection, is not expected to be a top option downfield right away for New England. However, it’s not an unusual expectation, especially for a player drafted in the later rounds. There will always be struggles for rookies in the NFL, where the competition is many times more talented than in college. Coaches can be harder too on first-year players.</p><p>At the same time, it’s understandable for a veteran like Mills to come to the defense of Boutte, who could use more encouragement instead of having the experience of getting made fun of on social media by trolls and haters.</p><p>At the end of the day, players will be judged based on production and how they handle themselves on and off the field — and even behind the scenes.</p><p>Before turning pro, Boutte <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lsu-football-news-kayshon-boutte-nfl-draft-projections-tigers-180" rel="noopener">played three years</a> in college for the LSU Tigers, racking up 1,782 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns on 131 receptions.</p><p>The Patriots currently have DeVante Parker, Kendrick Bourne, and JuJu Smith-Schuster in front of Boutte in the wide receiver pecking order in New England.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

But one former Patriot doesn’t buy those rumors.</p><p>Kevin Faulk, who played for the Patriots from 1999-2011 and was on LSU’s coaching staff from 2018 to 2022, defended Boutte <a href="https://www.bostonherald.com/2023/05/07/nfl-notes-patriots-great-kevin-faulk-is-bullish-on-lsu-receiver-kayshon-boutte/" rel="noopener">against the coachability concerns</a> surrounding him in an interview with The Boston Herald’s Karen Guregian, calling them “crazy.”</p><p>“All I can tell you is I don’t know where that came from. Because when I was with that kid, he was very coachable,” Faulk told Guregian. “When you say a kid’s not coachable, that means a coach can’t relate to who the kid is as a player. That’s all that is to me.”</p><p>One of the other things that might have dinged Kayshon Boutte’s draft stock was the ankle injury he suffered in 2021. The fractured ankle caused Boutte to miss the second half of that season and required a second surgery in early 2022 when it wasn’t healing the way they hoped it would.</p><p>Faulk mentioned how well Boutte was doing before that injury, catching nine touchdowns in six games that season, and how it could take some time to get back to that level. He also pointed out that there’s already a connection that Boutte might have with one key member on the Patriots’ coaching staff to help strengthen his case as a draft steal.</p><p>“They know what they’re getting,” Faulk said. “Bill O’Brien coached against him when he was with Alabama. Kelly called out Boutte’s leadership ability during spring practice that year and there were rumors of Boutte possibly transferring following LSU’s season-opening loss.</p><p>But the player and coach seemed to make amends by season’s end.</p><p>“I think he’s feeling comfortable with his role and his leadership role,” Kelly told reporters following a game in October. “We’ve elevated his leadership role and he’s been outstanding. He grabbed me on the sideline and said, ‘Coach, don’t forget the first things that you have to say when you go in the locker room.’ He’s even scripting my stuff now. I was like, ‘Oh thanks, Kayshon. Appreciate it. I couldn’t find you the first week. Now you’re running the show.’</p><p>“That’s what I love about him. He’s been so engaged, so part of what we’re doing. And we’re better because of it and you can see when he touches the football he’s electric. We’re here because our best players are playing their best football.”</p><p>Boutte didn’t have as great of a season in 2022 as many hoped for, recording 48 receptions for 538 yards and two touchdowns. But it’s hard to deny that the talent isn’t there with the former five-star recruit that was ranked as the second-best receiver in the 2020 recruiting class.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
